RESUMEN

The use of wetland plants in the context of phytoremediation is effective in the removal of antibiotics from contaminated water. However, the effectiveness and efficiency of many of these plants in the removal of antibiotics remain undetermined. In this study, the effectiveness of two plants-Phragmites australis and Iris pseudacorus-in the removal of tetracycline (TC) in hydroponic systems was investigated. The uptake of TC at the roots of I. pseudacorus and P. australis occurred at concentrations of 588.78 and 106.70 µg/g, respectively, after 7-day exposure. The higher uptake of TC in the root of I. pseudacorus may be attributed to its higher secretion of root exudates, which facilitate conditions conducive to the reproduction of microorganisms. These rhizosphere-linked microorganisms then drove the TC uptake, which was higher than that in the roots of P. australis. By elucidating the mechanisms underlying these uptake-linked outcomes, we found that the uptake of TC for both plants was significantly suppressed by metabolic and aquaporin inhibition, suggesting uptake and transport of TC were active (energy-dependent) and passive (aquaporin-dominated) processes, respectively. The subcellular distribution patterns of I. pseudacorus and P. australis in the roots were different, as expressed by differences in organelles, cell wall concentration levels, and transport-related dynamics. Additionally, the microbe-driven enhancement of the remediation capacities of the plants was studied comprehensively via a combined microbial-phytoremediation hydroponic system. We confirmed that the microbial agents increased the secretion of root exudates, promoting the variation of TC chemical speciation and thus enhancing the active transport of TC. These results contribute toward the improved application of wetland plants in the context of antibiotic phytoremediation.

OBJECTIVES: Preoperative identification of different stromal subtypes of pleomorphic adenoma (PA) of the salivary gland is crucial for making treatment decisions. We aimed to develop and validate a model based on histogram analysis (HA) of ultrasound (US) images for predicting tumour stroma ratio (TSR) in salivary gland PA. METHODS: A total of 219 PA patients were divided into low-TSR (stroma-low) and high-TSR (stroma-high) groups and enrolled in a training cohort (n = 151) and a validation cohort (n = 68). The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression algorithm was used to screen the most optimal clinical, US, and HA features. The selected features were entered into multivariable logistic regression analyses for further selection of independent predictors. Different models, including the nomogram model, the clinic-US (Clin + US) model, and the HA model, were built based on independent predictors using logistic regression. The performance levels of the models were evaluated and validated on the training and validation cohorts. RESULTS: Lesion size, shape, cystic areas, vascularity, HA_mean, and HA_skewness were identified as independent predictors for constructing the nomogram model. The nomogram model incorporating the clinical, US, and HA features achieved areas under the curve of 0.839 and 0.852 in the training and validation cohorts, respectively, demonstrating good predictive performance and calibration. Decision curve analysis and clinical impact curves further confirmed its clinical usefulness. CONCLUSIONS: The nomogram model we developed offers a practical tool for preoperative TSR prediction in PA, potentially enhancing clinical decision-making.

OBJECTIVE: To summarize the clinical features of primary nephrotic syndrome (PNS) complicated by plastic bronchitis (PB) in children to provide guidance for treatment. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of the clinical data of 25 children hospitalized with NS complicated by PB in our Hospital between 10/2016 and 03/2019, and summarized the clinical manifestations, imaging and fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FOB) examinations, treatment course and outcome of them. RESULTS: 1). The 25 children, with a nephrotic syndrome (NS) course of one to 36 months, were all diagnosed with PB after FOB, among which 8 cases (32%) had respiratory failure and required ventilatory support. All of them started with respiratory symptoms such as fever and cough, and then suffered from dyspnea and progressive aggravation after 1-3 day(s) of onset, with rapid occurrence of bidirectional dyspnea and even respiratory failure in severe cases. 2). Laboratory test for pathogens: influenza A virus H1N1 (11 cases), influenza B virus (9 cases), adenovirus (3 cases) and mycoplasma pneumoniae (2 cases). There was no statistically significant difference (P>0.05) between children with common NS complicated by influenza virus (IV) infection (not accompanied by dyspnea) and those with kidney disease who developed PB in the white blood cell count, lymphocyte count, the inflammatory biomarkers C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT) and humoral immunity (IgG level), yet the total IgG level was found significantly higher and the blood albumin level lower in the latter (P<0.05). 3). The 25 children were all examined with the FOB and treated with lavage, 15 of which had typical bronchial tree-like casts and 10 broken and stringy casts. Based on histopathological classification, all children were of Type I. 4). Twenty children (80%) with influenza were administered the antiviral drug Oseltamivir, 20 (80%) were treated with antibiotics, oral hormones were replaced with the same dosage of intravenous Methylprednisolone for 5 cases (20%), and 20 (80%) were intravenously administered gamma globulins (400-500 mg/kg x 3 days). These children showed a remarkable improvement after treatment and there were no deaths. CONCLUSION: NS children are at high risk of influenza virus infection. Children with a severe case of NS are more susceptible to PB. If symptoms like shortness of breath, wheezing and progressive bidirectional dyspnea occur, FOB examination and lavage treatment should be performed as early as possible. Hyper-IgE-emia and hypoproteinemia may be the high risk factors for PNS complicated by PB in children. ZIEL: Ziel der Studie war es, durch Zusammenfassung der klinischen Merkmale des primären nephrotischen Syndroms (PNS) mit komplizierender plastischer Bronchitis (PB) im Kindesalter eine Orientierungshilfe für die Therapie der Erkrankung zu geben. METHODIK: Wir führten eine retrospektive Prüfung der klinischen Daten von 25 Kindern durch, die zwischen Oktober 2016 und März 2019 in unser Krankhaus aufgenommen wurden, und erstellten eine Zusammenfassung der klinischen Symptome, Untersuchungen mit bildgebenden Verfahren und fiberoptischer Bronchoskopie (FOB), des Therapieverlaufs und des Outcomes der Patienten. ERGEBNISSE: 1). Bei den 25 Kindern bestand ein nephrotisches Syndrom (NS) über einen Zeitraum von einem bis 36 Monaten. Bei allen Patienten wurde die Diagnose PB nach FOB gestellt, wobei in 8 Fällen (32%) eine beatmungspflichtige respiratorische Insuffizienz vorlag. Alle Patienten zeigten anfänglich Symptome einer Atemwegserkrankung wie Fieber und Husten, gefolgt von Atemnot und progredienter Verschlechterung 1 bis 3 Tage nach Erkrankungsbeginn. Dabei kam es rasch zum Auftreten bidirektionaler Atemnot, in schweren Fällen bis hin zur respiratorischen Insuffizienz. 2). Laboruntersuchung auf Erreger: Influenza-A-Virus H1N1 (11 Fälle), Influenza-B-Virus (9 Fälle), Adenovirus (3 Fälle) und Mycoplasma pneumoniae (2 Fälle). Es fand sich kein statistisch signifikanter Unterschied (P>0,05) zwischen Kindern, die ein "gewöhnliches" NS mit komplizierender Influenza-Virus (IV)-Infektion (ohne begleitende Atemnot) aufwiesen, und Kindern mit Nierenerkrankung, die eine PB entwickelten, hinsichtlich der Leukozyten- und Lymphozytenwerte sowie der Entzündungsmarker C-reaktives Protein (CRP), Procalcitonin (PCT) und humorale Immunität (IgG-Wert). Allerdings wurde bei der letzteren Patientengruppe ein signifikant höherer Gesamt-IgG-Wert und ein signifikant niedriger Albumin-Spiegel im Blut nachgewiesen (P<0.05). 3). Bei allen 25 Kindern erfolgte eine FOB und Therapie mit Lavage, bei 15 Kinder fanden sich typische verzweigte Ausgüsse der Bronchialäste und bei 10 Patienten desintegrierte und zähe Ausgüsse. Gemäß der histopathologischen Klassifikation waren alle Kinder vom Typ I. 4). Zwanzig Kinder (80%) mit Influenza erhielten das Virostatikum Oseltamivir, 20 Kinder (80%) eine Antibiotikatherapie, in 5 Fällen (20%) wurden oral gegebene Hormone durch intravenös in derselben Dosis verabreichtes Methylprednisolon ersetzt und 20 Kinder (80%) erhielten intravenös verabreichte Gammaglobuline (400-500 mg/kg Körpergewicht x 3 Tage). Diese Kinder zeigten eine bemerkenswerte Verbesserung nach der Therapie und es traten keine Todesfälle auf. SCHLUSSFOLGERUNG: Bei Kindern mit NS besteht ein hohes Risiko für eine Influenza-Virus-Infektion. Kinder mit schwerem NS sind anfälliger für PB. Bei Auftreten von Symptomen wie Atemnot, Giemen und Brummern sowie progredienter bidirektionaler Dyspnoe sollte baldmöglichst eine FOB-Untersuchung und eine therapeutische Lavage durchgeführt werden. Erhöhte IgE-Werte im Blut und Hypoproteinämie stellen möglicherweise Risikofaktoren für PNS mit komplizierender PB im Kindesalter dar.

A series of composites consisting of anatase TiO2 nanocrystals and three-dimensional (3D) graphene aerogel (TiO2-GA) were self-assembled directly from tetrabutyl titanate and graphene oxides via a one-pot hydrothermal process. TiO2 was found to uniformly distribute inside the 3D network of GA in the resulting composites with large surface areas (SBET > 125 m(2) g(-1)) and high pore volumes (Vp > 0.22 cm(3) g(-1)). In comparison with GA and TiO2, the composites possessed much higher adsorption capacities and visible light photocatalytic activity in the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). With an initial concentration of 20.0 mg L(-1) of RhB, the adsorptive decolourization of RhB was as high as 95.1% and the total decolourization value reached up to 98.7% under visible light irradiation over 5.0 mg of the resulting composites. It was elucidated that the physical and chemical properties of the TiO2-GA composites could be ascribed to their unique 3D nanoporous structure with high surface areas and the synergetic activities of graphene nanosheets and TiO2 nanoparticles.

To investigate the relationship between chemotherapy dose intensity and therapy efficacy of different molecular subtypes. Clinical and pathological features of the patients with breast cancer were retreived from the hospital records. 315 patients were analyzed (251 showed clinical response, 38 acquired pCR). Patients with positive ER status, negative PR status, higher Ki67 level and higher RTDI had better therapy response. 13.5 and 84.5 % were identified the benchmark of Ki67 and RTDI, respectively. As the result of interior-subgroup comparison, luminal subgroups acquired better response rate when RTDI ≥ 84.5 %. In patients of luminal breast cancer, tumor size change arose from increasing of dose intensity and finally showed reached a plateau after RTDI ≥ 95 % (r (2) = 0.303, p < 0.001). As the result of intersubgroup comparison, TNBC patients were more likely to acquired better clinical and pathology response when RDTI < 84.5 %. Ki67 change arose sharply from increasing of dose intensity when RDTI < 84.5 % (r (2) = 0.656, p < 0.001), whereas the regression curve showed a terminal plateau in patients of RDTI ≥ 84.5 % (r (2) = 0.427, p < 0.001). Given lower RTDI, luminal patients are less likely to achieve response, and TNBC patients are associated with higher response rate. Dissimilar of therapy efficacy between luminal subtype and TNBC becomes inconspicuous as RTDI rises. Chemosensitivity may associate with dose intensity, especially in luminal subtypes, and tailored therapeutic strategies should be considered.

Objective: This study sought to analyze the 18F-FDG PET/CT and contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) images of synchronous colorectal cancer (CRC) and renal clear cell carcinoma (ccRCC) and identify the shared genes between these two types of cancer through bioinformatic analysis. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on a patient with synchronous CRC and ccRCC who underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT and contrast-enhanced CT before treatment. Databases were analyzed to identify differentially expressed genes between CRC and ccRCC, and co-expression genes were extracted for RCC and CRC. Results: 18F-FDG PET/CT revealed intense metabolic activity in the primary colorectal lesion (SUVmax 13.2), while a left renal mass (diameter = 35 mm) was observed with no significant uptake. Contrast-enhanced CT during the arterial phase showed heterogeneous intense enhancement of the renal lesion, and the lesion washed out earlier than in the renal cortex in the nephrographic and excretory phases, indicating ccRCC. The histopathological results confirmed synchronous double primary malignant tumors. Our bioinformatic analysis results showed that synchronous occurrence of CRC and ccRCC may correlate with simultaneous expression of Carbonic Anhydrase 9 (CA9), integrin-binding sialoprotein (IBSP), and Fibrinogen γ chain (FGG). Conclusion: 18F-FDG PET/CT combined with contrast-enhanced CT is an effective diagnostic tool in evaluating synchronous CRC and RCC. By analyzing this clinical case and conducting bioinformatic analysis, we improved our current understanding of the mechanisms underlying synchronous tumors.

OBJECTIVES: Accurate distinguishing between immunoglobulin G4-related sialadenitis (IgG4-RS) and primary Sjögren syndrome (pSS) is crucial due to their different treatment approaches. This study aimed to construct and validate a nomogram based on the ultrasound (US) scoring system for the differentiation of IgG4-RS and pSS. METHODS: A total of 193 patients with a clinical diagnosis of IgG4-RS or pSS treated at our institution were enrolled in the training cohort (n = 135; IgG4-RS = 28, pSS = 107) and the validation cohort (n = 58; IgG4-RS = 15, pSS = 43). The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression algorithm was utilized to screen the most optimal clinical features and US scoring parameters. A model for the differential diagnosis of IgG4-RS or pSS was built using logistic regression and visualized as a nomogram. The performance levels of the nomogram model were evaluated and validated in both the training and validation cohorts. RESULTS: The nomogram incorporating clinical features and US scoring parameters showed better predictive value in differentiating IgG4-RS from pSS, with the area under the curves of 0.947 and 0.958 for the training cohort and the validation cohort, respectively. Decision curve analysis demonstrated that the nomogram was clinically useful. CONCLUSIONS: A nomogram based on the US scoring system showed favourable predictive efficacy in differentiating IgG4-RS from pSS. It has the potential to aid in clinical decision-making.

Background: Mutations in filaggrin (FLG), the gene that codes for the skin barrier protein, have been shown to be associated with atopic dermatitis (AD). Objective: The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of genetic counseling and parental education on infants at a high risk of AD. Methods: We enrolled 7521 newborns in Taiwan from January 1, 2016, to March 30, 2020, and all of them received genetic testing encompassing 20 known FLG mutations. The genetic counseling and AD prevention and care team consisted of pediatricians, dermatologists, social workers, and genetic counselors. The counseling was arranged for at least 30 minutes within 45 days after delivery. Results: A total of 2963 high-risk infants (39.4%) were identified. Homozygous c.1432C>T was the most commonly identified mutation. A total of 418 neonates' parents were stratified into counseling and noncounseling groups, where the effect of parental education was evaluated. The genetically stratified parental education program was effective in preventing AD development by 63.3% in high-risk infants before 12 months of life (P < 0.0001). Conclusion: Genetic stratification and parental education are effective in preventing the development of AD in high-risk infants before 12 months of life.

BACKGROUND: Early identification of high-risk groups of children with sepsis is beneficial to reduce sepsis mortality. This article used artificial intelligence (AI) technology to predict the risk of death effectively and quickly in children with sepsis in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective observational study was conducted in the PICUs of the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University from December 2016 to June 2019 and Shenzhen Children's Hospital from January 2019 to July 2020. The children were divided into a death group and a survival group. Different machine language (ML) models were used to predict the risk of death in children with sepsis. RESULTS: A total of 671 children with sepsis were enrolled. The accuracy (ACC) of the artificial neural network model was better than that of support vector machine, logical regression analysis, Bayesian, K nearest neighbor method and decision tree models, with a training set ACC of 0.99 and a test set ACC of 0.96. CONCLUSIONS: The AI model can be used to predict the risk of death due to sepsis in children in the PICU, and the artificial neural network model is better than other AI models in predicting mortality risk.

Mosquito transmitted viruses are responsible for an increasing burden of human disease. Despite this, little is known about the diversity and ecology of viruses within individual mosquito hosts. Here, using a meta-transcriptomic approach, we determined the viromes of 2,438 individual mosquitoes (81 species), spanning ~4,000 km along latitudes and longitudes in China. From these data we identified 393 viral species associated with mosquitoes, including 7 (putative) species of arthropod-borne viruses (that is, arboviruses). We identified potential mosquito species and geographic hotspots of viral diversity and arbovirus occurrence, and demonstrated that the composition of individual mosquito viromes was strongly associated with host phylogeny. Our data revealed a large number of viruses shared among mosquito species or genera, enhancing our understanding of the host specificity of insect-associated viruses. We also detected multiple virus species that were widespread throughout the country, perhaps reflecting long-distance mosquito dispersal. Together, these results greatly expand the known mosquito virome, linked viral diversity at the scale of individual insects to that at a country-wide scale, and offered unique insights into the biogeography and diversity of viruses in insect vectors.

Two cationic cyclometallated iridium(III) complexes with 2,2'-bipyridine-acylhydrazone were synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic and photophysical measurements. They exhibit remarkable aggregation-induced phosphorescent emission (AIPE) phenomenon which is caused by the restriction of rapid isomerization of the C=N bond in the acylhydrazone moiety and are supported by TD-DFT studies. They also act as a significant 'off-on' luminescent switch for Cu(2+) which works as both catalyzer and oxidant in the sensing process, resulting in hydrolysis and cyclization products which are highly emissive. The sensing properties of iridium(III) complexes are also investigated by ESI-MS spectrometry and (1)H NMR spectroscopy.

The preparation, characterization, and photochromic properties of a mononuclear gold(I) complex (1oo) with two identical DTE-acetylides and a dinuclear gold(I) complex (2ooo) with both DTE-acetylide and DTE-diphosphine are described. Both gold(I) complexes exhibit multistep and multiple photocyclization/cycloreversion reactions. Particularly, four-state and four-color photochromic switch is successfully achieved for the dinuclear gold(I) complex upon irradiation with appropriate wavelengths of light. In contrast, fully ring-closed form is unattained through multiple photocyclization for the two corresponding model organic compounds coupling with the same DTE units as gold(I) complexes but without gold(I)-participation. It is demonstrated that coordination of gold(I) ion to DTE-acetylides exerts indeed a crucial role in achieving stepwise and selective photocyclization and cycloreversion reactions for both gold(I) complexes, in which the coordinated gold(I) atom acts as an effective "barrier" to prohibit intramolecular energy transfer between multi-DTE moieties.

AbstractObjective: To explore the effect and mechanism of curcumin on human T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) cell apoptosis induced by Mcl-1 small molecule inhibitors UMI-77. METHODS: T-ALL cell line Molt-4 was cultured, and the cells were treated with different concentrations of curcumin and Mcl-1 small molecule inhibitor UMI-77 for 24 h. The MTT method was used to detect the cell survival rate after different treatment; According to the results of curcumin and UMI-77, the experimental settings were divided into control group, curcumin group (20 µmol/L curcumin treated cells), UMI-77 group (15 µmol/L Mcl-1 small molecule inhibitor UMI-77 treated cells) and curcumin+ UMI-77 group (20 µmol/L curcumin and 15 µmol/L Mcl-1 small molecule inhibitor UMI-77 treated cells), MTT method was used to detect cell proliferation inhibition rate, Annexin V-FITC/PI double staining method and TUNEL staining were used to detect cell apoptosis, DCFH-DA probe was used to detect cell reactive oxygen species, JC-1 fluorescent probe was used to detect mitochondrial membrane potential, Western blot was used to detect the expression levels of apoptosis-related proteins and Notch1 signaling pathway-related proteins. RESULTS: After the treatment of Molt-4 cells with different concentrations of curcumin and Mcl-1 small molecule inhibitor UMI-77, the cell survival rate was decreased (P<0.05); Compared with the control group, the cell proliferation inhibition rate of the curcumin group and the UMI-77 group were increased, the apoptosis rate of cell was increased, the level of ROS was increased, the protein expression of Bax, Caspase-3 and Caspase-9 in the cells were all increased, and the protein expression of Bcl-2 was reduced (P<0.05); Compared with the curcumin group or UMI-77 group, the cell proliferation inhibition rate and apoptosis rate of the curcumin+UMI-77 group were further increased, and the level of ROS was increased. At the same time, the protein expression of Bax, Caspase-3 and Caspase-9 in the cells were all increased, the protein expression of Bcl-2 was reduced (P<0.05); In addition, the mitochondrial membrane potential of the cells after curcumin treatment was decreased, and the proteins expression of Notch1 and HES1 were reduced (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Curcumin can enhance the apoptosis of T-ALL cells induced by Mcl-1 small molecule inhibitor UMI-77 by reducing the mitochondrial membrane potential, the mechanism may be related to the inhibition of Notch1 signaling pathway.

Patients on hemodialysis with multiple comorbidities have limited physical activity, resulting in poor health, low activity participation, and low quality of life. Accordingly, the nursing care provided to such patients should include regular physical activity training programs. Therefore, this cross-sectional descriptive study investigated whether patients on hemodialysis with and without comorbidities have different levels of physical activity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL); the correlations among the comorbidities, physical activity, and HRQoL of the two cohorts were also assessed. The 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey version 2 and International Physical Activity Questionnaire were employed to collect data from 120 patients on hemodialysis. An independent samples t-test and univariate and multivariate linear regression analyses were conducted. The overall HRQoL of patients with comorbidities was lower than that of patients without comorbidities (p = 0.008). Compared with patients who participated in low-intensity physical activity, the overall HRQoL of patients who participated in moderate-intensity physical activity was higher (p < 0.001). The overall HRQoL of patients with comorbidities who participated in low-intensity physical activity was lower than that of those who participated in moderate-intensity physical activity (p < 0.001). Moderate-intensity physical activity was correlated with higher HRQoL for patients with comorbidities. This finding supports the implementation of effective physical activity intervention measures. Furthermore, it supports the promotion of patient self-management and the implementation of regular exercise programs and lifestyle changes, and patients on hemodialysis can benefit from the future management of physical activities.

Comorbidities cause psychological distress to patients on hemodialysis and cause their physical function to deteriorate. This study aims to examine whether physical patterns are associated with anxiety, depression and fatigue among patients with and without comorbidities who are on hemodialysis. To this end, a cross-sectional survey was administered to 120 patients on hemodialysis. Data were collected using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire­Short Form, Beck Depression Inventory­Second Edition, Beck Anxiety Inventory, and Brief Fatigue Inventory­Taiwan Version. An independent sample t test and generalized linear model analyses were conducted. The results revealed that patients with comorbidities exhibited more severe levels of depression (p < 0.001), anxiety (p < 0.001), and fatigue (p = 0.010) than patients without comorbidities. Additionally, patients on hemodialysis with a high physical activity level (≥600 metabolic equivalent of task per min/week) exhibited less depression (B = −4.03; p < 0.001; 95% confidence interval [CI] = −6.04, −2.03) and anxiety (B = −2.64; p = 0.002; 95% CI = −4.27, −1.00) severity than those with a low physical activity level; those who engaged in weekly physical activities exhibited less fatigue severity (B = −1.17; p = 0.001; 95% CI = −1.84, −0.49) and fatigue interference (B = −0.61; p = 0.015; 95% CI = −1.10, −0.12). For patients on hemodialysis, having comorbidities was correlated with more severe levels of depression, anxiety, and fatigue. Weekly moderate-intensity physical activities were revealed to be correlated with less severity levels of depression, anxiety, and fatigue. The study findings aid the development of interventions for promoting physical activity among patients on hemodialysis to prevent the exacerbation of complications caused by comorbidities and psychological distress.

Square-planar bis(σ-fluorophenylacetylide) platinum(II) complexes [Pt(Me(3)SiC≡CbpyC≡C-SiMe(3))(C≡CC(6)H(4)F)(2)] (C≡CC(6)H(4)F-2 for 2, C≡CC(6)H(4)F-3 for 3, and C≡CC(6)H(4)F-4 for 4; Me(3)SiC≡CbpyC≡CSiMe(3)=5,5'-bis(trimethylsilylethynyl)-2,2'-bipyridine) were prepared and were characterized by spectroscopic and luminescence studies, and X-ray crystallography. The color and luminescence of crystalline complex 3 is specifically sensitive to CHCl(3) vapor to afford 140-180 nm of luminescence vapochromic redshift, which is useful for specific detection of CHCl(3) vapor. Complex 4 displays selective luminescence vapochromic properties to CH(2)Cl(2) and CHCl(3) vapors with a luminescence vapochromic shift response of ca. 150-200 nm. Interestingly, complexes 2-4 exhibit reversible, and naked-eye perceivable, mechanical stimuli-responsive color and luminescence changes. When solid species 2-4 are crushed gently or ground, the crystalline state is converted to an amorphous phase. Meanwhile, bright yellow-orange luminescence in the crystalline species is converted to dark red under UV light irradiation with 100-160 nm of mechanochromic shift response. A vapochromic or mechanochromic cycle was monitored by dynamic variations in emission spectra and X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns. The halohydrocarbon vapor- or mechanical-grinding-triggered color and luminescence switches are most likely correlated to a shorted intermolecular Pt-Pt distance as that revealed in vapochromic species 4·0.5 CH(2)Cl(2) by X-ray crystallography, thus leading to an increased contribution from intermolecular Pt-Pt interaction as demonstrated by DTF computational studies.

The designed synthesis of a sensitive phosphorescent chemosensor [Ir(ppy)(2)(L1)](PF(6)) (1) (Hppy = 2-phenylpyridine, L1 = 4'-methyl-2,2'-bipyridyl-4-carbaldehyde oxime) was carried out for selective detection of hypochlorite (ClO(-)). Complex 1 is weakly emissive in solution at ambient temperature due likely to rapid isomerization of C=N-OH as an effective non-radiative decay process. When 1 reacts with ClO(-), however, the emission is remarkably enhanced, in which the oxime in L1 is converted to a carboxylic acid in L2 (4'-methyl-2,2'-bipyridine-4-carboxylic acid). The produced complex [Ir(ppy)(2)(L2)](PF(6)) (2) exhibits bright orange-yellow luminescence originating from [5d(Ir) → π*(bpy)] (3)MLCT and [π(ppy) → π*(bpy)] (3)LLCT triplet excited states as suggested from the DFT computational studies. The selective and competitive experiments reveal that complex 1 shows high sensing selectivity and sensitivity for ClO(-) over other reactive oxygen species (ROS) and metal ions.

Planar platinum(II) complexes Pt(bpyC≡CSiMe(3))(C≡CC(6)H(4)R-4)(2) (R = H (1), Bu(t) (2)) with 5-trimethylsilylethynyl-22'-bipyridine show an unusual, reversible, and reproducible mechanical stimuli-responsive color and luminescence switch. When crystalline 1 or 2 is ground, bright yellow-green emitting is immediately converted to red luminescence with an emission red shift of 121-155 nm for 1 or 53-89 nm for 2. Meanwhile, the crystalline state is transformed to an amorphous phase that can be reverted to the original crystalline state by organic vapor adsorbing or heating, along with red luminescence turning back to yellow-green emitting. The reversibility and reproducibility of luminescence mechanochromic properties have been dynamically monitored by the variations in emission spectra and X-ray diffraction patterns. The drastic grinding-triggered emission red shift is likely involved in the formation of a dimer or an aggregate through Pt-Pt interaction, resulting in a conversion of the (3)MLCT/(3)LLCT emissive state in the crystalline state into the (3)MMLCT triplet state in the amorphous phase. Compared with the drastic grinding-triggered emission red shift in 1 (121-155 nm), the corresponding response shift in 2 (53-89 nm) is much smaller since a bulky tert-butyl in C≡CC(6)H(4)bu(t)-4 induces the planar platinum(II) molecules to stack through a longer Pt-Pt distance and less intermetallic contact compared with that in 1, as suggested from EXAFS studies.

Reactions of 1,3-bis(2-pyridylimino)isoindoline (HL1), 1,3-bis(2-pyridylimino)benz(f)isoindoline (HL2), or 5,6-dihydro-2,3-diphenyl-5-(pyridin-2-ylimino)pyrrolo[3,4-b]pyrazin-7-ylidene)pyridin-2-amine (HL3) with Pt(tht)(2)Cl(2) (tht = tetrahydrothiophene) afforded the corresponding Pt(L)Cl complexes. A series of neutral platinum(II) alkynyl complexes Pt(L)(C[triple bond]CR) were prepared by reactions of the precursors Pt(L)Cl with alkynyl ligands through CuI-catalyzed platinum acetylide sigma coordination. Crystal structural determination of Pt(L3)Cl (3), Pt(L1)(C[triple bond]CPh) (4), and Pt(L1)(C[triple bond]CC(6)H(4)Bu(t)-4) (6) by X-ray crystallography revealed that the neutral platinum(Pi) complexes with monoanionic tridentate L ligands display more perfect square-planar geometry than that in platinum(II) complexes with neutral tridentate 2,2':6',2''-terpyridyl ligands. Both the Pt(L)Cl and Pt(L)(C[triple bond]CC(6)H(4)R-4) complexes exhibit low-energy absorption at 400-550 nm, arising primarily from pi --> pi*(L) intraligand (IL) and 5d(Pt) --> pi*(L) metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) transitions as suggested from density functional theory calculations. They display bright-orange to red room-temperature luminescence in fluid dichloromethane solutions with microsecond to submicrosecond ranges of emissive lifetimes and 0.03-3.79% quantum yields, originating mainly from (3)IL and (3)MLCT excited states. Compared with the emissive state in Pt(L)Cl complexes, substitution of the coordinated Cl with C[triple bond]CC(6)H(4)R-4 in Pt(L)(C[triple bond]CC(6)H(4)R-4) complexes induces an obviously enhanced contribution from the (3)[pi(C[triple bond]CC(6)H(4)R-4) --> pi*(L)] ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer (LLCT) triplet state. The photophysical properties can be finely tuned by modifying both the L and alkynyl ligands. The calculated absorption and emission spectra in dichloromethane coincide well with those measured in a fluid dichloromethane solution at ambient temperature.
