RESUMEN

Atmospheric methane growth reached an exceptionally high rate of 15.1 ± 0.4 parts per billion per year in 2020 despite a probable decrease in anthropogenic methane emissions during COVID-19 lockdowns1. Here we quantify changes in methane sources and in its atmospheric sink in 2020 compared with 2019. We find that, globally, total anthropogenic emissions decreased by 1.2 ± 0.1 teragrams of methane per year (Tg CH4 yr-1), fire emissions decreased by 6.5 ± 0.1 Tg CH4 yr-1 and wetland emissions increased by 6.0 ± 2.3 Tg CH4 yr-1. Tropospheric OH concentration decreased by 1.6 ± 0.2 per cent relative to 2019, mainly as a result of lower anthropogenic nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions and associated lower free tropospheric ozone during pandemic lockdowns2. From atmospheric inversions, we also infer that global net emissions increased by 6.9 ± 2.1 Tg CH4 yr-1 in 2020 relative to 2019, and global methane removal from reaction with OH decreased by 7.5 ± 0.8 Tg CH4 yr-1. Therefore, we attribute the methane growth rate anomaly in 2020 relative to 2019 to lower OH sink (53 ± 10 per cent) and higher natural emissions (47 ± 16 per cent), mostly from wetlands. In line with previous findings3,4, our results imply that wetland methane emissions are sensitive to a warmer and wetter climate and could act as a positive feedback mechanism in the future. Our study also suggests that nitrogen oxide emission trends need to be taken into account when implementing the global anthropogenic methane emissions reduction pledge5.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: To the best of our knowledge, no previous studies have explored the relationship between visceral obesity and malnutrition. Therefore, this study has aimed to investigate the association between them in patients with rectal cancer. METHODS: Patients with rectal cancer who underwent proctectomy were included. Malnutrition was defined according to the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM). Visceral obesity was measured using computed tomography (CT). The patients were classified into four groups according to the presence of malnutrition or visceral obesity. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate risk factors for postoperative complications. Univariate and multivariate cox regression analyses were performed to evaluate the risk factors for overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS). Kaplan-Meier survival curves and log-rank tests were performed for the four groups. RESULTS: This study enrolled 624 patients. 204 (32.7%) patients were included in the well-nourished non-visceral obesity (WN) group, 264 (42.3%) patients were included in the well-nourished visceral obesity (WO) group, 114 (18.3%) patients were included in the malnourished non-visceral obesity (MN) group, and 42 (6.7%) patients were included in the malnourished visceral obesity (MO) group. In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, the Charlson comorbidity index (CCI), MN, and MO were associated with postoperative complications. In the multivariate cox regression analysis, age, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score, tumor differentiation, tumor node metastasis (TNM), and MO were associated with worsened OS and CSS. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that the combination of visceral obesity and malnutrition resulted in higher postoperative complication and mortality rates and was a good indicator of poor prognosis in patients with rectal cancer.

RESUMEN

Small ponds are important methane (CH4) sources. However, current estimates of CH4 emissions from aquaculture ponds are largely uncertain due to data paucity, especially in China─the largest aquaculture producer in the world. Here, we present a nationwide metadata analysis with a database of 55 field observations to examine total CH4 emissions from aquaculture ponds in China. We found that the annual CH4 fluxes from aquaculture ponds are much larger than those from reservoirs and lakes. The total CH4 emission from aquaculture ponds is 1.60 ± 0.62 Tg CH4 yr-1, with an average growth rate of ∼0.03 Tg CH4 yr-2 during the period 2008-2019. Compared with global major protein-producing livestocks, aquaculture species have a lower (63%) emission intensity, defined by the amount of CH4 emitted per unit of animal proteins. Our study highlights the essential contribution of China's aquaculture ponds to national CH4 emissions and the lower environmental cost of the aquaculture sector for future animal protein production. More field measurements with multi-scale observations are urgently needed to reduce the uncertainty of CH4 emissions from aquaculture ponds.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The disposable esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) system is a novel endoscopic device which is highly portable and is designed to eliminate the risk of cross-infection caused by reusable EGD. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility and safety of disposable EGD in emergency, bedside, and intraoperative settings. METHODS: This was a prospective, single-center, noncomparative study. Disposable EGD was used for emergency, bedside, and intraoperative endoscopies in 30 patients. The primary end-point was the technical success rate of the disposable EGD. Secondary end-points included technical performance indicators including clinical operability, image quality score, procedure time, the incidence of device malfunction and/or failure, and the incidence of adverse events. RESULTS: A total of 30 patients underwent diagnosis and/or treatment with disposable EGD. Therapeutic EGD was performed on 13/30 patients, including hemostasis (n = 3), foreign body retrieval (n = 6), nasoenteric tube placement (n = 3), and percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (n = 1). The technical success rate was 100%: all procedures and indicated interventions were completed without changing to a conventional upper endoscope. The mean image quality score obtained immediately after procedure completion was 3.72 ± 0.56. The mean (± SD) procedure time was 7.4 (± 7.6) min. There were no device malfunctions or failures, device-related adverse events, or overall adverse events. CONCLUSION: The disposable EGD may be a feasible alternative to the traditional EGD in emergency, bedside, and intraoperative settings. Preliminary data show that it is a safe and effective tool for diagnosis and treatment in emergency and bedside upper gastrointestinal cases. RESUMEN

In light of the liver injury risk associated with the oral administration of Xianlin Gubao oral preparation, this study compared the differences in liver injury induced by two different extraction processes in rats and explored the correlation between hepatotoxicity and extraction process from the perspective of the differences in the content of the relevant components. Thirty male Sprague-Dawley(SD) rats were randomly divided into a normal group, tablet extract groups of different doses, and capsule extract groups of different doses, with 6 rats in each group. Each group received continuous oral administration for 4 weeks. The assessment of liver injury caused by different extracts was conducted by examining rat body weight, liver function blood biochemical indicators, liver coefficient, and liver pathological changes. In addition, a high-performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) method was established to simultaneously determine the content of icariin, baohuoside I, and bakuchiol in the extracts to compare the differences in the content of these three components under the two extraction processes. The results showed that both extracts caused liver injury in rats. Compared with the normal group, the tablet extract groups, at the studied dose, led to slow growth in body weight, a significant increase in triglyceride levels(P<0.05), a significant decrease in liver-to-brain ratio(P<0.05), and the appearance of hepatic steatosis. The capsule extract groups, at the studied dose, resulted in slow growth in body weight, a significant increase in aspartate aminotransferase levels(P<0.05), a significant decrease in body weight, liver weight, and liver-to-brain ratio(P<0.05), and the presence of hepatic steatosis and inflammatory cell infiltration. In comparison, the capsule extraction process had a higher risk of liver injury. Furthermore, based on the completion of the liquid chromatography method, the content of icariin and baohuoside Ⅰ in the capsule extract groups was 0.83 and 0.81 times that in the tablet extract groups, respectively, while the bakuchiol content in the capsule extract group was 29.80 times that in the tablet extract groups, suggesting that the higher risk of liver injury associated with the capsule extraction process may be due to its higher bakuchiol content. In summary, the differences in rat liver injury caused by the two extracts are closely related to the extraction process. This should be taken into consideration in the formulation production and clinical application.

RESUMEN

Attempts to determine why some patients respond to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) are valuable in schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is associated with aberrant dynamic functional architecture, which might impact the efficacy of ECT. We aimed to explore the relationship between pre-treatment temporal variability and ECT acute efficacy. Forty-eight patients with schizophrenia and 30 healthy controls underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine whether patterns of temporary variability of functional architecture differ between high responders (HR) and low responders (LR) at baseline. Compared with LR, HR exhibited significantly abnormal temporal variability in right inferior front gyrus (IFGtriang.R), left temporal pole (TPOsup.L) and right middle temporal gyrus (MTG.R). In the pooled patient group, ∆PANSS was correlated with the temporal variability of these regions. Patients with schizophrenia with a distinct dynamic functional architecture appear to reveal differential response to ECT. Our findings provide not only an understanding of the neural functional architecture patterns that are found in schizophrenia but also the possibility of using these measures as moderators for ECT selection.

RESUMEN

During the last two decades, there has been increasing concerns about the presence of antibiotics in aquatic environments. Phenicol antibiotics, such as chloramphenicol (CMP), commonly used in the veterinary and aquaculture fields to treat infections, have been often detected in aquatic environments, but scarce ecotoxicity information regarding the effects of CMP on non-target aquatic organisms is available, and multigenerational studies are seldom studied. Here we quantified the demographic responses of Brachionus calyciflorus exposed to sublethal concentrations (0, 5, 10, 30, 50, 70 and 90 mg L-1) of CMP for three successive generations (P0, F1, and F2). Our results showed that compared to the control, higher concentrations of CMP significantly decreased the life expectancy at hatching, generation time, net reproductive rate and intrinsic rate of population increase in all three generations, and the proportion of mictic offspring in the F1 generation of B. calyciflorus. With increasing generations, higher concentrations of CMP showed increased toxic effects on life expectancy at hatching and net reproductive rate, but irregular negative effects on generation time, intrinsic rate of population increase, and proportion of mictic offspring of the rotifers. These results indicate that multigenerational studies are necessary to prevent insufficient assessments of the impact of antibiotics in aquatic ecosystems.

RESUMEN

Global warming and pesticide contamination are two stressors of high concern, but their combined effects on freshwater biota are controversial. This study investigated the combined effects of warming and imidacloprid (IMI) on survival (measured as life expectancy at hatching), reproduction (net reproductive rate), population growth (intrinsic rate of population increase) and sexual reproduction (proportion of sexual offspring) of Brachionus calyciflorus using a life table experiment. The results showed that compared with controls, treatments with IMI at 50-100 mg/L significantly decreased survival, reproduction and population growth of the rotifers at 20℃. The inhibiting effect at higher IMI concentrations on survival increased with increasing temperatures, but those on reproduction and population growth increased only when the temperature increased from 25℃ to 30℃. The proportion of sexual offspring decreased with increasing temperatures. When monitoring the ecological effects of pollutants, environmental temperature and the possible adaptation of rotifers to it should be taken into consideration.

RESUMEN

Multimodal neuroimaging features provide opportunities for accurate classification and personalized treatment options in the psychiatric domain. This study aimed to investigate whether brain features predict responses to the overall treatment of schizophrenia at the end of the first or a single hospitalization. Structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data from two independent samples (N = 85 and 63, separately) of schizophrenia patients at baseline were included. After treatment, patients were classified as responders and non-responders. Radiomics features of gray matter morphology and functional connectivity were extracted using Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator. Support vector machine was used to explore the predictive performance. Prediction models were based on structural features (cortical thickness, surface area, gray matter regional volume, mean curvature, metric distortion, and sulcal depth), functional features (functional connectivity), and combined features. There were 12 features after dimensionality reduction. The structural features involved the right precuneus, cuneus, and inferior parietal lobule. The functional features predominately included inter-hemispheric connectivity. We observed a prediction accuracy of 80.38% (sensitivity: 87.28%; specificity 82.47%) for the model using functional features, and 69.68% (sensitivity: 83.96%; specificity: 72.41%) for the one using structural features. Our model combining both structural and functional features achieved a higher accuracy of 85.03%, with 92.04% responder and 80.23% non-responders to the overall treatment to be correctly predicted. These results highlight the power of structural and functional MRI-derived radiomics features to predict early response to treatment in schizophrenia. Prediction models of the very early treatment response in schizophrenia could augment effective therapeutic strategies.

RESUMEN

The performance of Xpert MTB/RIF using bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL) for the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) remains unclear. Therefore, a systematic review/meta-analysis was conducted. Studies published before 31 December 2019 were retrieved from the PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases using the keywords "pulmonary tuberculosis," "Xpert MTB/RIF," and "BAL." Two independent evaluators extracted the data and assessed the bias risk of the included studies. A random-effects model was used to calculate the overall sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative likelihood ratios (PLR and NLR, respectively), diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), and the area under the curve (AUC), as well as the respective 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Nineteen trials involving 3,019 participants met the inclusion criteria. Compared to the culture method, the pooled sensitivity, specificity, PLR, NLR, DOR, and the AUC with 95% CIs of Xpert MTB/RIF were 0.87 (0.84 to 0.90), 0.92 (0.91 to 0.93), 10.21 (5.78 to 18.02), 0.16 (0.12 to 0.22), 78.95 (38.59 to 161.53), and 0.9467 (0.9462 to 0.9472), respectively. Relative to the composite reference standard, the observed values were 0.69 (0.65 to 0.72), 0.98 (0.98 to 0.99), 37.50 (18.59 to 75.62), 0.30 (0.21 to 0.43), 171.98 (80.82 to 365.96), and 0.9691 (0.9683 to 0.9699), respectively. All subgroups, except children, showed high sensitivity and specificity. In conclusion, the use of Xpert MTB/RIF in the context of BAL samples has a high diagnostic performance for PTB (except for children) and may serve as an alternative rapid diagnostic tool.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Neuroimaging- and machine-learning-based brain-age prediction of schizophrenia is well established. However, the diagnostic significance and the effect of early medication on first-episode schizophrenia remains unclear. AIMS: To explore whether predicted brain age can be used as a biomarker for schizophrenia diagnosis, and the relationship between clinical characteristics and brain-predicted age difference (PAD), and the effects of early medication on predicted brain age. METHOD: The predicted model was built on 523 diffusion tensor imaging magnetic resonance imaging scans from healthy controls. First, the brain-PAD of 60 patients with first-episode schizophrenia, 60 healthy controls and 21 follow-up patients from the principal data-set and 40 pairs of individuals in the replication data-set were calculated. Next, the brain-PAD between groups were compared and the correlations between brain-PAD and clinical measurements were analysed. RESULTS: The patients showed a significant increase in brain-PAD compared with healthy controls. After early medication, the brain-PAD of patients decreased significantly compared with baseline (P < 0.001). The fractional anisotropy value of 31/33 white matter tract features, which related to the brain-PAD scores, had significantly statistical differences before and after measurements (P < 0.05, false discovery rate corrected). Correlation analysis showed that the age gap was negatively associated with the positive score on the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale in the principal data-set (r = -0.326, P = 0.014). CONCLUSIONS: The brain age of patients with first-episode schizophrenia may be older than their chronological age. Early medication holds promise for improving the patient's brain ageing. Neuroimaging-based brain-age prediction can provide novel insights into the understanding of schizophrenia.

RESUMEN

The development of simple preparation and excellent capacity performance electrode materials is the key to energy conversion and storage for supercapacitors. Based on the growth mechanism of crystal, Zn induced NiCo nanosheets and nanoneedles composite structure deposed on Ni foam (ZNC) are successfully attained by a facile one-step method, the growth mechanism of the composite structure is further discussed. Because of its unique composites structure and additional modification of carbon, the carbon modified ZNC (ZNC@C) delivers better energy storage ability (2280 mC cm-2at 2 mA cm-2) compare to ZNC. An asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) is assembled by ZNC@C as the positive electrode and carbonized popcorn as the negative electrode. The ASC exhibits good energy storage performance. Zn also positively affects the adsorption energy to enhance the capacitance property based on Density Functional theory calculation. The simple method for the composite structure by tuning the kinetics behaver of the crystal can provide a new strategy in synthesizing the materials, and the material with a unique structure and high performance will have potential applications in the field of energy storage.

RESUMEN

The human lens is comprised largely of crystallin proteins assembled into a highly ordered, interactive macro-structure essential for lens transparency and refractive index. Any disruption of intra- or inter-protein interactions will alter this delicate structure, exposing hydrophobic surfaces, with consequent protein aggregation and cataract formation. Cataracts are the most common cause of blindness worldwide, affecting tens of millions of people, and currently the only treatment is surgical removal of cataractous lenses. The precise mechanisms by which lens proteins both prevent aggregation and maintain lens transparency are largely unknown. Lanosterol is an amphipathic molecule enriched in the lens. It is synthesized by lanosterol synthase (LSS) in a key cyclization reaction of a cholesterol synthesis pathway. Here we identify two distinct homozygous LSS missense mutations (W581R and G588S) in two families with extensive congenital cataracts. Both of these mutations affect highly conserved amino acid residues and impair key catalytic functions of LSS. Engineered expression of wild-type, but not mutant, LSS prevents intracellular protein aggregation of various cataract-causing mutant crystallins. Treatment by lanosterol, but not cholesterol, significantly decreased preformed protein aggregates both in vitro and in cell-transfection experiments. We further show that lanosterol treatment could reduce cataract severity and increase transparency in dissected rabbit cataractous lenses in vitro and cataract severity in vivo in dogs. Our study identifies lanosterol as a key molecule in the prevention of lens protein aggregation and points to a novel strategy for cataract prevention and treatment.

RESUMEN

A Gram-negative, facultative anaerobic, non-lagellated and rod-shaped bacterium FML-4T was isolated from a chlorothalonil-contaminated soil in Nanjing, China. Phylogenetic analyses of 16S rRNA genes revealed that the strain FML-4T shared the highest sequence similarity of 97.1% with Ciceribacter thiooxidans KCTC 52231T, followed by Rhizobium rosettiformans CCM 7583T (97.0%) and R. daejeonense KCTC 12121T (96.8%). Although the sequence similarities of the housekeeping genes thrC, rceA, glnII, and atpD between strain FML-4T and C. thiooxidans KCTC 52231T were 83.8%, 88.7%, 86.2%, and 92.0%, respectively, strain FML-4T formed a monophyletic clade in the cluster of Rhizobium species. Importantly, the feature gene of the genus Rhizobium, nifH gene (encoding the dinitrogenase reductase), was detected in strain FML-4T but not in C. thiooxidans KCTC 52231T. In addition, strain FML-4T contained the summed feature 8 (C18:1ω7c and/or C18:1ω6c), C19:0 cyclo ω8c and C16:0 as the major fatty acids. Genome sequencing of strain FML-4T revealed a genome size of 7.3 Mbp and a G+C content of 63.0 mol%. Based on the results obtained by phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic analyses, phenotypic characterization, average nucleotide identity (ANI, similarity 77.3-75.4%), and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH, similarity 24.5-22.3%), it was concluded that strain FML-4T represented a novel species of the genus Rhizobium, for which the name Rhizobium flavescens sp. nov. was proposed (type strain FML-4T = CCTCC AB 2019354T = KCTC 62839T).

RESUMEN

The baking industries and disinfection of tap water released a considerable amount of bromate into surface water, which has been reported as a carcinogenic compound to mammals. Rotifers play an important role in freshwater ecosystems and are model organisms to assess environmental contamination. In the present study, the effects of different concentrations (0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, 100 and 200 mg/L) of bromate on the life-table and population growth parameters were investigated in the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus. The results showed that the 24-h LC50 of bromate to B. calyciflorus was 365.29 mg/L (95%Cl: 290.37-480.24). Treatments with 0.01, 10 and 200 mg/L bromate shorten the reproductive period. High levels of bromate (100 and 200 mg/L) significantly decreased net reproductive rate, intrinsic rate of population increase, life span, mictic rate of B. calyciflorus. To investigate the underlying mechanisms, swimming speed and antioxidative biomarkers were compared between bromate treatments and the control. The results showed that glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents, total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) and peroxidase (POD) activities decreased significantly in response to bromate exposure and the reasons required further investigation. Treatments with 0.001-200 mg/L bromate all significantly reduced swimming linear speed to rotifer larvae and treatments with 100-200 mg/L bromate significantly suppressed the swimming linear speed of adult rotifer. These changes would reduce filtration of algal food and could explain the decreased survival and reproduction. Overall, bromate may not show acute toxicity to rotifers, but still have potential adverse effects on rotifer behavior, which may then influence the community structure in aquatic ecosystems.

RESUMEN

Wurtzite-structured CdS material is widely used in information sensing and energy harvesting. Based on the piezoelectric property of CdS, we present a flexible piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) with three-dimensional-structured CdS nanowall arrays. Under index finger oscillations at a slow rate, the maximal open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current are 1.2 V and 6 nA respectively. Meanwhile, the working mechanism of this PENG was successfully studied with piezoelectric potential distribution and energy band theory respectively. All of the results show that an increase in the bending degree and bending frequency will affect the output of the PENG, suggesting that it can be used as a flexible sensor. In addition, the fabricated PENG can be used as a self-powered pressure sensor relying on the linear relationship between the output voltage and the vertical pressure. This work may provide a new approach to fabricating piezoelectric nanogenerators based on three-dimensional materials as an energy harvester, which may also facilitate the development of flexible and wearable electric sensing technology.

RESUMEN

The high-performance filter capacitor is a hot research topic in the field of filter circuits for flexible and wearable devices, whereas traditional aluminum electrolytic capacitors still experience widespread problems in terms of large error factors and poor stability. To avoid these disadvantages, in this work, we have developed a liquid dual-layer supercapacitor (SC). When it is employed as the filter capacitor in a filter circuit, any waveform signal can be transformed into a linear signal. The maximum fluctuation of the output signal is less than 16 mV; the SC also demonstrates excellent filtering stability in a frequency range of 1 ∼ 100 000 Hz, as well as an amplitude window of 0 ∼ 10 V. In this framework, our filter SC demonstrates unparalleled processing properties, and can greatly improve the stability and extend the lifetime of the entire electronic circuit. The fact that the requirements of high-end electronic products can be fulfilled due to the contribution of this filter SC are particularly significant.

RESUMEN

By exploiting the storage performance of supercapacitors, iron has the potential to be used as a new anode material. However, this potential is limited by unsatisfactory electrical conductivity and poor cycling stability which impact the energy and power density. Consequently a foundation for improving the electrical conductivity and cycling stability of iron materials to obtain good storage performance is needed. In this work, Ag-modified Fe2O3 nanoparticles on carbon cloth were synthesized as an anode material for supercapacitors. The specific capacitance of the composite material reaches 10.39 F cm-2 (2734.2 F g-1) at a current density of 1 mA cm-2 and remains at 83% of this value after 12 000 cycles. The energy density is 379.8 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 131.6 W kg-1 and remains at 123.9 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 2631.6 W kg-1. The electrical conductivity and interfacial effect created between Ag@Fe2O3 is confirmed with density functional theory calculations. The packaged asymmetric supercapacitor devices have flexibility and can light ten LEDs for 2 min 30 s, with an energy density of 60.3 Wh kg-1 that can be reached at a power density of 1063.8 W kg-1 and remain at 16 Wh kg-1 even at a power density of 4255.3 W kg-1.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of cavum septum pellucidum (CSP) in mental disorders, particularly schizophrenia spectrum disorders and mood disorders, remains uncertain. The authors used a meta-analytical approach to determine the prevalence of CSP in mental disorders and to compare these with the prevalence of CSP in psychiatrically healthy comparison subjects. METHODS: PubMed and Embase were systematically searched for relevant articles published as of January 9, 2018. After a quality assessment of individual studies using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, a random-effects model within Stata statistical software was used to synthesize 25 eligible studies that included 2,392 patients with mental disorders and 1,445 psychiatrically healthy comparison subjects. RESULTS: The prevalence of CSP of any size and large CSP was found to be significantly higher in individuals with mental disorders compared with healthy comparison subjects, and the prevalence of CSP in schizophrenia spectrum and mood disorders did not differ between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: The meta-regression with predefined covariance indicated that imaging parameters were not associated with the heterogeneity among original studies; however, the mean age of enrolled subjects was identified as a possible source of heterogeneity. No publication bias was found.
