BACKGROUND: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) causes thinning hair, but poor hair quality in balding areas and damage from UV radiation have been overlooked. Plant extracts like Platycladus orientalis flavonoids (POFs) may improve hair quality in AGA. This study examines POFs' effectiveness in treating AGA-affected hair and repairing UV-induced damage. METHODS: Hair samples were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to examine surface characteristics, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy to measure free radicals in the hair, and spectrophotometry to assess changes in hair properties. RESULTS: POFs effectively removed hydroxyl radicals from keratinocytes and had antioxidant properties. They also reduced UV-induced damage to AGA hair by mitigating the production of melanin free radicals. Following POF treatment, the reduction in peroxidized lipid loss in AGA hair was notable at 59.72%, thereby effectively delaying the progression of hair color change. Moreover, protein loss decreased by 191.1 µ/g and tryptophan loss by 15.03%, ultimately enhancing hair's tensile strength. CONCLUSION: compared to healthy hair, hair damaged by AGA shows more pronounced signs of damage when exposed to UV radiation. POFs help protect balding hair by reducing oxidative damage and slowing down melanin degradation.

ß-Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) has shown promising effects on intestinal health, and it is extensively applied as an anti-aging and Alzheimer's disease therapeutic, due to its medicinal properties. The effects of NMN on the growth of mouse hair were observed after hair removal. The results indicated that NMN can reverse the state of hair follicle atrophy, hair thinning, and hair sparsity induced by dihydrotestosterone (DHT), compared to that of minoxidil. In addition, the action mechanisms of NMN promoting hair growth in cultured human dermal papilla cells (HDPCs) treated with DHT were investigated in detail. The incubation of HDPCs with DHT led to a decrease in cell viability and the release of inflammatory mediators, including interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-1Beta (IL-1ß) and tumor necrosis factor Alpha (TNF-α). It was found that NMN can significantly lower the release of inflammatory factors induced by DHT in HDPCs. HDPCs cells are protected from oxidative stress damage by NMN, which inhibits the NF-κB p65 inflammatory signaling pathway. Moreover, the levels of androgen receptor (AR), dickkopf-1 (DKK-1), and ß-catenin in the HDPCs were assessed using PCR, indicating that NMN can significantly enhance the expression of VEGF, reduced IL-6 levels and suppress the expression of AR and DKK-1, and notably increase ß-catenin expression in DHT-induced HDPCs.

The sunscreen nanocapsules were successfully synthesized by the way of layer-by-layer self-assembly using charged droplets (prepared by emulsification of LAD-30, Tween-80 and EHA (2-Ethylhexyl-4-dimethylaminobenzoate)) as templates. Chitosan/sodium alginate/calcium chloride were selected as wall materials to wrap EHA. The emulsions with the ratio of Tween-80 to EHA (1:1) were stable. A stable NEI negative emulsion can be obtained when the ratio of Tween-80 and LAD-30 was 9:1. Chitosan solutions (50 kDa, 0.25 mg/mL) and sodium alginate solutions (0.5 mg/mL) were selected to prepare nanocapsules. The nanocapsules were characterized via some physico-chemical methods. Based on the synergistic effects of the electrostatic interaction between wall materials and emulsifiers, EHA was effectively encapsulated. DLS and TEM showed that the sunscreen nanocapsules were dispersed in a spherical shape with nano-size, with the increasing number of assembly layers, the size increased from 155 nm (NEI) to 189 nm (NEII) to 201 nm (NEIII) and 205 nm after solidification. The release studies in vitro showed sustained release behavior of the nanocapsules were observed with the increase of the number of deposition layers, implying a good coating effect. The sunscreen nanocapsules could control less than 50% the release of EHA after crosslinking of calcium chloride and sodium alginate, which also could effectively avoid the stimulation of the sun protection agent on the skin.

In the title compound, [Mn(C(8)H(5)N(2)O(2))(2)(C(2)H(5)OH)(2)], the Mn(II) atom is six-coordinated by two N and two O atoms from two 1H-benzimidazole-2-carboxyl-ate (L) ligands and by two O atoms from two ethanol mol-ecules in a distorted octa-hedral geometry. The mean planes of the two L ligands are inclined to each other at 7.6 (1)°. In the crystal, N-H⋯O and O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the mol-ecules into layers parallel to the ab plane.

Octyl methoxycinnamate (OMC) is widely used as a chemical sunscreen in sunscreen cosmetics. However, its direct contact with the skin would bring certain risks, such as skin photosensitive reaction. How to improve the effect of skin photodamage protection has become a current research hotspot. Encapsulating ultraviolet (UV) filters into microcapsules is an interesting method to increase the photostability of filters. In this study, sodium caseinate (SC) and arabic gum (GA) are chosen as wall materials to prepare synergistic sunscreen microcapsules by complex coacervation technology. A series of experiments are conducted to investigate the effects of pH, wall material concentration, and wall/core ratio on the formation of OMC microcapsules. The morphology, composition, and stability of OMC microcapsules are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The OMC microcapsule is uniform in size distribution, smooth in surface morphology, and has good thermal stability. The results show that the ultraviolet absorption of the OMC microcapsules is better than that of the uncoated OMC for the ultraviolet-B (280-320 nm). Moreover, the OMC microcapsule released 40% in 12 h, while OMC released 65%, but the sun protection factor (SPF) of the OMC microcapsule sunscreen is 18.75% higher than that of OMC. This phenomenon may be attributed to the hydrophobic interaction between SC and OMC and the electrostatic interaction between SC and GA.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate functional and radiological outcomes in distal femoral fracture patients (distal femoral shaft fractures or metaphyseal fractures) receiving indirect reduction and internal fixation with the minimally invasive percutaneous plate osteosynthesis (MIPPO) assisted by 3D printing navigation templates. METHODS: This retrospective study included all adult (≥18 years) patients who underwent MIPPO for distal femoral fracture (AO32/33) at PLA 960 Hospital, Jinan, China between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2016. 3D printed navigation templates were used to assist surgery. Functional assessment was performed using the Knee Society Score (KSS) and the Functional Knee Society Score (FKSS). Postoperative deformity was assessed with 3D-CT reconstruction using contralateral (non-fracture) side as the reference. RESULTS: A total of 54 patients underwent MIPPO for distal femoral fracture during the review period (34 and 20 for conventional and template-guided MIPPO, respectively). At 10-14 months, the KSS score was 160.6 ±â€¯18.1 and 167.5 ±â€¯17.2 in the conventional and template-guided MIPPO groups, respectively (p = 0.18). The FKSS was 77.6 ±â€¯9.4 in the conventional MIPPO group vs. 81.0 ±â€¯8.5 in the template-guided MIPPO group (p = 0.15). Femoral length difference was smaller in template-guided MIPPO group (3.31 ±â€¯1.53 vs. 9.50 ±â€¯4.49 mm in the control; p < 0.01). Template-guided MIPPO group also had smaller anatomic lateral distal femoral angle (aLDFA) difference (1.57° ± 0.72° vs. 3.89° ± 1.72° in the control; p < 0.01), anatomic posterior distal femoral angle (aPDFA) difference (1.95° ± 0.78° vs. 5.04° ± 1.78°; p < 0.01), and anteversion angle difference (2.52° ± 1.00° vs. 8.23° ± 4.07°; p < 0.01). The rate of length discrepancy (>20 mm), coronal angulation deformity (aLDFA difference >5°), sagittal angulation deformity (aPDFA difference >10°), and rotational malalignment (anteversion angle >10°) was 5.9%, 20.5%, 2.9%, and 32.4% in the control group. No patients in the template-guided MIPPO group had deformity of any type. CONCLUSIONS: MIPPO assisted by 3D printing navigation templates could practically improve surgical accuracy and eliminate postoperative rotational deformity in patients with distal femoral fractures.

This paper presents an approach that is capable of producing a color image using a single composite diffractive optical element (CDOE). In this approach, the imaging function of a DOE and the spectral deflection characteristics of a grating were combined together to obtain a color image at a certain position. The DOE was designed specially to image the red, green, and blue lights at the same distance along an optical axis, and the grating was designed to overlay the images to an off-axis position. We report the details of the design process of the DOE and the grating, and the relationship between the various parameters of the CDOE. Following the design and numerical simulations, a CDOE was fabricated, and imaging experiments were carried out. Both the numerical simulations and the experimental verifications demonstrated a successful operation of this new approach. As a platform based on coaxial illumination and off-axis imaging, this system is featured with simple structures and no cross-talk of the light fields, which has huge potentials in applications such as holographic imaging.
