OBJECTIVE: This Bayesian network meta-analysis was performed to analyze the associations between clinicopathological characteristics and BRAF mutations in ameloblastoma (AM) patients and to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four electronic databases were searched from 2010 to 2024. The search terms used were specific to BRAF and AM. Observational studies or randomized controlled trials were considered eligible. The incidence of BRAF mutation and corresponding clinicopathological features in AM patients were subjected to Bayesian network analyses and diagnostic accuracy evaluation. RESULTS: A total of 937 AM patients from 20 studies were included. The pooled prevalence of BRAF mutations in AM patients was 72%. According to the Bayesian network analysis, BRAF mutations are more likely to occur in younger (odds ratio [OR], 2.3; credible interval [CrI]: 1.2-4.5), mandible site (OR, 3.6; 95% CrI: 2.7-5.2), and unicystic (OR, 1.6; 95% CrI: 1.1-2.4) AM patients. Similarly, higher diagnostic accuracy was found in the younger, mandible, and unicystic AM groups. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence, risk, and diagnostic accuracy of BRAF mutation in AM were greater in younger patients, those with mandible involvement, and those with unicystic AM than in patients with other clinicopathological features. In addition, there was a strong concordance in the diagnostic accuracy between molecular tests and immunohistochemical analysis.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, our aim was to develop and validate the effectiveness of diverse radiomic models for distinguishing between gnathic fibrous dysplasia (FD) and ossifying fibroma (OF) before surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We enrolled 220 patients with confirmed FD or OF. We extracted radiomic features from nonenhanced CT images. Following dimensionality reduction and feature selection, we constructed radiomic models using logistic regression, support vector machine, random forest, light gradient boosting machine, and eXtreme gradient boosting. We then identified the best radiomic model using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. After combining radiomics features with clinical features, we developed a comprehensive model. ROC curve and decision curve analysis (DCA) demonstrated the models' robustness and clinical value. RESULTS: We extracted 1834 radiomic features from CT images, reduced them to eight valuable features, and achieved high predictive efficiency, with area under curves (AUC) exceeding 0.95 for all the models. Ultimately, our combined model, which integrates radiomic and clinical data, displayed superior discriminatory ability (AUC: training cohort 0.970; test cohort 0.967). DCA highlighted its optimal clinical efficacy. CONCLUSION: Our combined model effectively differentiates between FD and OF, offering a noninvasive and efficient approach to clinical decision-making.

Although itch and pain have many similarities, they are completely different in perceptual experience and behavioral response. In recent years, we have a deep understanding of the neural pathways of itch sensation transmission. However, there are few reports on the role of non-neuronal cells in itch. Microglia are known to play a key role in chronic neuropathic pain and acute inflammatory pain. It is still unknown whether microglia are also involved in regulating the transmission of itch sensation. In the present study, we used several kinds of transgenic mice to specifically deplete CX3CR1+ microglia and peripheral macrophages together (whole depletion), or selectively deplete microglia alone (central depletion). We observed that the acute itch responses to histamine, compound 48/80 and chloroquine were all significantly reduced in mice with either whole or central depletion. Spinal c-fos mRNA assay and further studies revealed that histamine and compound 48/80, but not chloroquine elicited primary itch signal transmission from DRG to spinal Npr1- and somatostatin-positive neurons relied on microglial CX3CL1-CX3CR1 pathway. Our results suggested that microglia were involved in multiple types of acute chemical itch transmission, while the underlying mechanisms for histamine-dependent and non-dependent itch transmission were different that the former required the CX3CL1-CX3CR1 signal pathway.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the histopathological features of eosinophilic sialodochitis by using terminal duct biopsy. METHODS: Sixty-five patients with suspected eosinophilic sialodochitis and four with chronic obstructive sialadenitis were prospectively enrolled. Clinical features, laboratory tests and sialograms were comparatively analysed. Terminal duct biopsy of the parotid or submandibular glands was performed concomitantly with endoscopy-assisted duct dilatation to determine the histopathological features of eosinophilic sialodochitis. RESULTS: Based on eosinophil quantification, the samples of suspected patients were scored as 'definite', 'highly suspected' and 'negative' in 26 (40%), 15 (23.1%) and 24 (36.9%) cases, respectively. Gland types and peripheral blood eosinophil counts were significantly different among these three groups. The proportions of itching glands, mucus plug exudations and elevated immunoglobulin E levels were higher in the 'definite' group than in the other two groups; however, the intergroup differences were insignificant. The primary pathological features of eosinophilic sialodochitis were abundant eosinophils and lymphocytes infiltrated around the duct, degranulation of eosinophils, extensive fibrosis and scattered mastocytes. Periductal eosinophils were not found in cases of chronic obstructive sialadenitis. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that terminal duct biopsy is safe and valuable for the pathological confirmation of eosinophilic sialodochitis, and can be used simultaneously with endoscopy-assisted duct dilatation.

Objective To evaluate the accuracy of different convolutional neural networks (CNN),representative deep learning models,in the differential diagnosis of ameloblastoma and odontogenic keratocyst,and subsequently compare the diagnosis results between models and oral radiologists. Methods A total of 1000 digital panoramic radiographs were retrospectively collected from the patients with ameloblastoma (500 radiographs) or odontogenic keratocyst (500 radiographs) in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology,Peking University School of Stomatology.Eight CNN including ResNet (18,50,101),VGG (16,19),and EfficientNet (b1,b3,b5) were selected to distinguish ameloblastoma from odontogenic keratocyst.Transfer learning was employed to train 800 panoramic radiographs in the training set through 5-fold cross validation,and 200 panoramic radiographs in the test set were used for differential diagnosis.Chi square test was performed for comparing the performance among different CNN.Furthermore,7 oral radiologists (including 2 seniors and 5 juniors) made a diagnosis on the 200 panoramic radiographs in the test set,and the diagnosis results were compared between CNN and oral radiologists. Results The eight neural network models showed the diagnostic accuracy ranging from 82.50% to 87.50%,of which EfficientNet b1 had the highest accuracy of 87.50%.There was no significant difference in the diagnostic accuracy among the CNN models (P=0.998,P=0.905).The average diagnostic accuracy of oral radiologists was (70.30±5.48)%,and there was no statistical difference in the accuracy between senior and junior oral radiologists (P=0.883).The diagnostic accuracy of CNN models was higher than that of oral radiologists (P<0.001). Conclusion Deep learning CNN can realize accurate differential diagnosis between ameloblastoma and odontogenic keratocyst with panoramic radiographs,with higher diagnostic accuracy than oral radiologists.

BACKGROUND: Orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst (OOC), a newly designated entity of odontogenic cysts, is an intraosseous jaw cyst that is entirely or predominantly lined by orthokeratinized squamous epithelium. The aim of this study was to report a large series of OOC to substantiate its clinicopathologic profiles and to investigate PTCH1 mutations in OOCs. METHOD: The clinicopathologic features of 167 OOCs from 159 patients were analyzed and the immunohistochemical expression of markers related to cell differentiation and proliferation was evaluated. Furthermore, PTCH1 mutations were analyzed in 14 fresh samples of OOC. RESULTS: OOCs occurred mostly in the third and fourth decades (60.4%) with a male predilection (66.7%). The lesions developed more often in the mandible than maxilla, primarily in the posterior mandible and ramus. Eight patients (5.0%) showed multiple locations of either bilateral posterior mandible (n = 6) or both the maxilla and mandible. Radiographically, the majority of OOCs (91.2%) showed a well-demarcated, unilocular radiolucency with 14 multilocular cases (8.8%). A follow-up of 131 patients (123 treated by enucleation with or without marsupialization and eight by peripheral ostectomy) revealed no recurrence during an average period of 4.56 years after surgery. Immunohistochemistry indicated lower proliferative activity and a varying epithelial differentiation pattern in OOC compared with odontogenic keratocysts (OKC). No PTCH1 mutation was detected, except for three known single nucleotide polymorphisms. CONCLUSION: The clinicopathological and molecular differences between OOC and OKC justified their separation, and unlike OKCs, OOCs did not harbor PTCH1 mutations, suggesting different pathogenesis underlying these two jaw cysts.

This study established the fingerprint and combined it with chemical pattern recognition to evaluate the quality of Atractylodes chinensis samples from different producing areas and then employed the quantitative analysis of multi-components by single marker(QAMS) method to verify the feasibility and applicability of the established method in the quality evaluation of A. chinensis. The fingerprints of A. chinensis samples were constructed via high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) to evaluate the inter-batch consistency. With the quality control component atractylodin as the internal reference, the relative correction factors(RCFs) were established for atractylenolide Ⅰ, atractylenolide Ⅲ, and ß-eudesmol and the content of the four components was calculated. The external standard method was used to verify the accuracy of QAMS method. The quality of A. chinensis was further evaluated by similarity analysis, clustering analysis, and principal component analysis. The fingerprints of 13 batches of samples were calibrated with 21 common peaks, and 4 common peaks were identified with the similarities all above 0.9. The RCFs established with atractylodin as the internal reference represented good reproducibility under different experimental conditions. Specifically, the RCFs of atractylenolide Ⅰ, atractylenolide Ⅲ, and ß-eudesmol in A. chinensis were 2.091, 4.253, and 6.010, respectively. QAMS and ESM showed no significant difference in the results, indicating that the QAMS method established in this study was stable and reliable. Thus, HPLC fingerprint combined with QAMS can be used for the quality evaluation of A. chinensis, providing a basis for comprehensive and rapid quality evaluation of A. chinensis.

This study was designed to evaluate the effect of low level of Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) on oxidative stress, immune reaction and inflammation response and the possible ameliorating effects of dietary alpha-lipoic acid (α-LA) in broilers. Birds were randomly allocated into three groups and assigned to receive different diets: basal diet, diet containing 74 µg/kg AFB1, and 300 mg/kg α-LA supplementation in diet containing 74 µg/kg AFB1 for three weeks. The results showed that the serum levels of malondialdehyde, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) and interferon gamma (IFNγ) in the AFB1-treated group were significantly increased than the control group. In addition, the increased expressions of interleukin 6 (IL6), TNFα and IFNγ were observed in birds exposed to the AFB1-contaminated diet. These degenerative changes were inhibited by α-LA-supplement. The activities of total superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, the levels of humoral immunity, and the expressions of nuclear factor-κB p65 and heme oxygenase-1, however, were not affected by AFB1. The results suggest that α-LA alleviates AFB1 induced oxidative stress and immune changes and modulates the inflammatory response at least partly through changes in the expression of proinflammatory cytokines of spleen such as IL6 and TNFα in broiler chickens.

Short-chained perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs, CnF2n+1-R, n ≤ 6) have merged as global concerns due to their extensive application and considerable toxicity. However, long-chained PFAAs (n ≥ 7) featured with high persistence are still ubiquitously observed in aquatic environment. To understand the uptake behavior of short-chained PFAAs in aquatic macrophytes, the uptake kinetics, bioconcentration, and translocation of short-chained PFAAs (3 ≤n ≤ 6) in two typical free-floating macrophytes (Eichhornia crassipes and Ceratophyllum demersum) were investigated in the treatments with and without long-chained PFAAs (7 ≤n ≤ 11). Results showed that short-chained PFAAs can be readily accumulated in both E. crassipes and C. demersum, and the uptake of short-chained PFAAs fit the two-compartment kinetic model well (p < 0.05). In the treatments with long-chained PFAAs, significant concentration decreases of all concerned short-chained PFAAs in E. crassipes and PFAAs with n ≤ 5 in C. demersum were observed. Long-chained PFAAs could hinder the uptake rates, bioconcentration factors, and translocation factors of most short-chained PFAAs in free-floating macrophytes (p < 0.01). Significant correlations between bioconcentration factors and perfluoroalkyl chain length were only observed when long-chained PFAAs were considered (p < 0.01). Our results underlined that the effects of long-chained PFAAs should be taken into consideration in understanding the uptake and bioaccumulation behaviors of short-chained PFAAs.

Background/purpose: There is inconsistent evidence regarding whether the botulinum toxin A (BTA) injection can relieve pain caused by bruxism. This study aimed to estimate the efficiency of BTA injection in relieving pain caused by bruxism at different follow-up periods. Materials and methods: Five electronic databases were searched from 2005 to 2022 using search terms related to botulinum toxin and bruxism. Only controlled clinical trials were included. Two investigators reviewed each article and discussed any disagreements until a consensus was reached. Pain outcomes as evaluated by the visual analogue scale (VAS) were subjected to single-arm and Bayesian network meta-analyses. Pooling data were measured by a random-effects model. Results: Eleven studies with a total of 365 bruxism patients were included. According to the single-arm analyses of the pooled data, the reduction in bruxism-related pain after BTA injection measured 4.06 points (95% CI = 3.37 to 4.75) on the VAS, and the pain relief was significant in the first 6 months after treatment (P < 0.01). According to the Bayesian analysis, BTA also resulted in significantly greater pain relief than oral splinting (mean difference (MD), -1.5; 95% credible interval (CrI) = -2.7 to -0.19) or saline injection (MD, -3.3; 95% CrI = -6.2 to -0.32). Conclusion: BTA significantly relieves the pain of bruxism for 6 months after injection, and its therapeutic efficacy was higher than that of oral splinting. Nevertheless, further long-term follow-up randomized controlled trials comparing BTA with other management or drugs are warranted.

The present study investigated the temporal and spatial distributions, partition behaviors, sources, and risks of 14 perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in the aquatic environment of a fluorine industry-impacted region. The total concentrations of 14 PFAAs (ΣPFAAs) were 118.10-2235.4 ng/L, 40.00-2316.1 ng/g dw, and 6.90-180.5 ng/g dw in dissolved, suspended particle matter (SPM), and sedimentary phases, respectively. The predominant pollutants in the dissolved and SPM phases were perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) with carbon chain lengths <9, whereas C13 and C14 PFCAs accounted for a large proportion in the sedimentary phase. The dry season exhibited the highest concentration of ΣPFAAs in the dissolved phase (500.9 ± 350.2 ng/L), while the wet season showed the highest concentrations of ΣPFAAs in the SPM and sedimentary phases (591.6 ± 469.1 ng/g dw and 59.7 ± 35.5 ng/g dw, respectively). Significantly higher concentrations of PFAAs have been found in sewage plant and industrial areas. The concentration of PFAAs in the Xupu water source area (XPS) was slightly higher than that in other water source areas of the Yangtze River, which were either not affected or were less affected by the fluorine industry. The log KD-SPM (distribution coefficient between SPM and water), log KD-SED (distribution coefficient between sediment and water), and log KOC-SED (the organic carbon normalized distribution coefficient) of PFAAs showed significant differences between the wet season and dry season, which may also be affected by carbon chain length. Source identification results showed that industries, wastewater discharge, and nonpoint sources were the main sources of PFAAs in this region. The ecological risk posed by long-chain PFAAs in aquatic organisms cannot be ignored, especially in areas with intensive industrial and agricultural activities. Health risks may exist for local toddlers with long-term exposure to perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) through drinking water intake and dermal contact.

Background/purpose: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a serious disease endangering the health of patients, and the application of immunotherapy in HNSCC is gradually emerging. However, there is no bibliometric analysis in this research field. This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the knowledge structure and research hotspots of immunotherapy for HNSCC. Materials and methods: Publications related to immunotherapy for HNSCC from 2002 to 2021 were searched in the Web of Science Core Collection database. The software VOSviewers, CiteSpace, and the R package 'bibliometrix' were used to perform this bibliometric analysis. Results: A total of 1297 publications were from 63 countries, led by the USA and China. The number of publications related to immunotherapy for HNSCC has increased rapidly from 2015. University of Pittsburgh and The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center are the main research institutions. Oral Oncology is the most popular journal in this field, and the Journal of Clinical Oncology is the most highly co-cited journal. These publications were from 7569 authors, with Robert L. Ferris publishing the most papers and being the most frequently co-cited. Clinical trials related to nivolumab and pembrolizumab have attracted wide attention. 'Immune checkpoint inhibitors', 'human papillomavirus', 'programmed cell death-ligand 1', and 'programmed cell death protein 1' are the main keywords of emerging research hotspots. Conclusion: This study presents a comprehensive summary of the trends and development of immunotherapy for HNSCC, identifies the research frontier and hotspot direction, and could provide a valuable reference for researchers in this field.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) stimulation of Governor Vessel on chloridion (Cl-) homeostasis and the expression of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and Na+-K+-Cl- cotransporter 1 (NKCC1) in the cerebral cortex of cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI) model rats, so as to explore its mechanism underl-ying alleviating limb spasm after stroke. METHODS: Forty-five male SD rats were randomly divided into normal, sham-operation, model, EA and baclofen groups, with 9 rats in each group. The CIRI model was established by occlusion of the middle cerebral artery and reperfusion. EA(100 Hz) was applied to "Dazhui" (GV14), "Jizhong"(GV6) and "Houhui" for 30 min. Rats of the baclofen group received gavage of baclofen solution (0.4 mg/kg, 1 mL/100 g), once daily for 7 consecutive days. Neurological deficit score was assessed according to Zea Longa's method. The muscular tone of quadriceps femoris of the limb was evaluated by modified Ashworth scale and electrophysiological recor-ding methods, separately. TTC staining was used to detect cerebral infarction volume, and the brain water content of rats in each group was determined by wet and dry weight method. The contents of Cl- and GABA in the cerebral cortex were detected by colorimetric method, and the expression levels of NKCC1 mRNA and protein in the cerebral cortex were detected by quantitative real-time PCR and Western blot, separately. RESULTS: No significant differences were found between the normal and sham-operation groups in all the indexes. Compared with the normal and sham-operation groups, the neurological deficit score, modified Ashworth muscle tone score, brain water content, cerebral infarct volu-me percent, Cl- content and expression levels of NKCC1 mRNA and protein were all evidently increased (P<0.01), and muscle tone of electrophyiological electromyogram (EMG) signal and GABA content were strikingly decreased (P<0.01) in the model group. Compared with the model group, both EA and baclofen groups had an obvious increase in EMG signal displayed muscle tone, and GABA content (P<0.05, P<0.01), and a marked decrease in the neurological deficit score, modified Ashworth score, brain water content, cerebral infarct percent, Cl- content and expression levels of NKCC1 mRNA and protein (P<0.05, P<0.01). CONCLUSION: EA stimulation of acupoints of the Governor Vessel can improve the degree of limb spasm and reduce the degree of cerebral edema and infarction in rats with stroke, which may be related to its functions in protecting Cl- homeostasis, up-regulating GABA concentration, and down-regulating the expression of NKCC1 protein and mRNA in the cerebral cortex.

Objectives: The treatment of locally advanced oral or oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LAOOPSCC) is surgery and radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy but with unsatisfactory survival rate. Neoadjuvant programmed death-1 (PD-1) therapy are being used in several clinical trials. Therefore, in this retrospective study we aimed to determine the feasibility of neoadjuvant tislelizumab plus chemotherapy followed by surgery for LAOOPSCC. Materials and methods: The clinical data of 33 patients with LAOOPSCC who received neoadjuvant PD-1 inhibitors and chemotherapy between April 2021 and October 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients with stage III-IV LAOOPSCC received tislelizumab, albumin-bound paclitaxel, and cisplatin every 3 weeks (Q3W) for two cycles, followed by surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy or concurrent chemoradiotherapy. A median follow-up period was 20 months. Results: The objective response rate (ORR) was 66.7%, with the major pathological response (MPR) rate at 54.5%, and the pathological complete response (pCR) rate was 33.3%. Sixteen patients underwent limited surgeries, and 15 patients were remitted from undergoing mandibulectomy and 9 patients were remitted from undergoing near total glossectomy or total glossectomy. A significant difference in the overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) was observed in patients who achieved major pathological response (MPR) than who did not. The most common adverse events in neoadjuvant therapy were alopecia, decreased appetite or anorexia, leukopenia, and fatigue. Conclusion: Neoadjuvant PD-1 inhibitors combined with chemotherapy are feasible and safe, with a high pathological response and possible organ preservation in oral or oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. However, further studies with a larger cohort of patients and longer follow-up period is required to strengthen our findings and evaluate the survival benefits of the treatment.

Background/purpose: Cancer is an important part of the global burden of childhood diseases. Head and neck carcinoma in children is rare and related research is limited. This study aimed to investigate the clinicopathological features of childhood head and neck carcinoma. Materials and methods: Forty-two cases of childhood head and neck carcinoma treated in our institution were reviewed and analyzed. Results: Median age overall was 11 years. Twenty-three patients (54.8%) were male and 19 (45.2%) were female. Parotid gland location was most common (54.8%). Mucoepidermoid carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma were the most common histological types (57.1% and 11.9%, respectively). Two patients had a history of bone marrow transplantation and two had a history of odontogenic keratocyst. The recurrence rate after treatment was 8.6%. Conclusion: Early diagnosis and treatment and close follow-up of childhood head and neck carcinoma are warranted to prevent recurrence and improve clinical outcome.

The ubiquitous existence of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in aquatic environments might pose toxic potential to ecosystems. To assess the ecotoxicological responses and removal of submerged macrophyte to multiple PFAA pollutants in aquatic environments, a typical submerged macrophyte, Hydrilla verticillate, was exposed to solutions with 12 typical PFAAs in the present study. The results showed that PFAAs at concentrations higher than 10 µg/L had significantly passive effects on biomass, relative growth rates, chlorophyll contents, and chlorophyll autofluorescence. PFAAs could induce the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxidation in H. verticillate. Significant upregulation of CAT was observed in treatments with more than 10 µg/L PFAAs (p < 0.05). The results also showed that 13.53-20.01% and 19.73-37.72% of PFAAs could be removed in treatments without plants and with H. verticillate, respectively. The removal rates of PFAAs were significantly correlated with perfluoroalkyl chain length in treatments with H. verticillate. The removal of PFAAs was suggested to be related to the uptake of plant tissues and biosorption of microbiota. Furthermore, the dominant microbiota and biomarkers were identified in water and biofilm. Betaproteobacteriales was the most dominant microbiota at the order level. The presence of PFAAs could significantly increase the relative abundance of Micrococcales, Verrucomicrobiales, Rhizobiales, Sphingomonadales, Roseomonas, Cyanobium_PCC_6307, and Synechococcales. Our results provide scientific basis for evaluating the ecotoxicological responses and removal of submerged macrophytes in response to multiple PFAA pollutants at environmentally relevant levels, thereby providing insights into PFAA management and removal.

Understanding the interactions between dissolved organic matter (DOM) and perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) is essential for predicting the distribution, transport, and fate of PFAAs in aquatic environments. Based on field investigations in the northwest of Taihu Lake Basin combined with laboratory experiments, we obtained DOM and PFAA concentrations as well as compositions and investigated key factors of DOM affecting PFAA variability and capture of PFAAs by DOM. Results indicated that the total concentrations of PFAAs were 73.4-689 ng/L in surface water and that PFAAs were dominated by C3-7 perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid. The main components of DOM included tyrosine-, fulvic-, and tryptophan-like substances. The Mantel test revealed a significant positive correlation between DOM and PFAAs (P = 0.0001). Fulvic-like substances were identified as the most crucial factors affecting PFAA variability. The laboratory experiments revealed that DOM can spontaneously aggregate into a microgel. Furthermore, 19.1-50.9% of PFAAs, DOM characteristic peaks, and several metals (Ca, Mg, Cu, and Fe) can be removed during aggregation, indicating the capacity of DOM binding organic/inorganic substances. The fulvic-like substances were more effectively removed than the protein-like substances. The distribution coefficients of all PFAAs except perfluorohexanoic acid significantly correlated with their perfluorinated carbon numbers (r = 0.975, p<0.001). Our results provided insights into the interactions between DOM and PFAAs, improving the understanding of the distribution, transport, and fate of PFAAs in aquatic environments.

Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) have emerged as a global concern in aquatic environment remediation due to their abundance, persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity. To comprehensively understand the removal potential of multiple PFAAs by submerged macrophytes in aquatic environments, systematic investigations into the tolerance of the typical submerged macrophyte Vallisneria natans to 12 typical PFAAs and the removal capacity to PFAAs in V. natans-microbiota systems were carried out. Results showed that although PFAAs could induce the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide and malondialdehyde, V. natans was overall resistant to multiple PFAAs with natural concentrations. Catalase is one of the main strategies of V. natans to alleviate PFAA stress. Microbiota can remove 18.10-30.84% of the PFAAs from the water column. 24.35-73.45% of PFAAs were removed from water in V. natans-microbiota systems. The uptake of plant tissues and the bioaccumulation of microbiota were proposed as the main removal processes. The removal rates were significantly correlated with the perfluorinated carbon atoms numbers (p < 0.05). PFAAs and V. natans increased the relative abundance of Betaproteobacteria, Nostocales, Microscillaceae, Sphingobacteriales, SBR1031, Chlamydiales, Phycisphaerae, Caldilineales, Rhodobacterales, and Verrucomicrobiales. The present study suggested that V. natans can be a potential species to remove multiple PFAAs in aquatic environments, and further providing insights into the PFAAs' remediation.

BACKGROUND: Implant placement in maxillary molar sites with severe height deficiency often requires multiple surgeries, which was time-consuming, invasive, and subject to serious postoperative complications. PURPOSE: To introduce and assess a three-in-one technique (extraction, alveolar ridge preservation [ARP], and sinus elevation) for augmenting deficiency maxillary molar alveolar ridges. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fourteen patients with severe posterior maxillary ridge height deficiency underwent extraction, sinus elevation via an intrasocket window and ARP using sticky bone and then covered with acellular dermal matrix (ADM). Primary closure was intentionally not obtained. Cone-beam computed tomography and periapical radiography were used to measure dimensional ridge changes over time. Bone biopsies were taken at implant placement 7-21 months after surgery, which proceeded without additional grafting. Peri-implant soft tissue was assessed after 8-12 months of functional loading. RESULTS: Maxillary molar sites (13 first molars, 1 second molar) with a mean sinus floor height of 1.73 ± 0.86 mm and mean buccal plate thickness of 1.62 ± 1.15 mm were elevated and grafted. Immediately after surgery, the mean sinus floor height was 14.03 ± 1.97 mm and the alveolar thickness at virtual implant platform level was 12.99 ± 1.88 mm. After 5-9 months healing, those measurements decreased by 2.45 ± 1.73 mm (p = 0.000) and 3.88 ± 3.95 mm (p = 0.006), respectively. Healed ridges were composed of 18.74% ± 4.34% mean vital bone and 19.08% ± 9.10% mean residual graft. After 8-12 months of functional loading, the peri-implant tissue appeared healthy, and there was a mean marginal bone loss of 0.12 ± 0.11 mm. CONCLUSIONS: For maxillary first molar sites with severe sinus floor height deficiency, this minimally invasive three-in-one treatment allows for uncomplicated implant placement and short-term functional stability.
