OBJECTIVE: The World Health Organization recommends using health-risk warnings on alcoholic beverages. This study examines the impact of separate or combined warning labels for at-risk groups and the general population on alcohol purchase decisions. METHODS: In 2022, 7758 adults who consumed alcohol or were pregnant/lactating women (54.0 % female, mean age = 40.6 years) were presented with an online store's beverage section and randomly assigned to one of six warning labels in a between-subjects experimental design: no-warning, pregnant/lactating, drinking-driving, general cancer risk, combined warnings, and assorted warnings across bottles. The main outcome, the intention to purchase an alcoholic vs. non-alcoholic beverage, was examined with adjusted risk differences using logistic regressions. RESULTS: Participants exposed to the general cancer risk warning decreased their alcoholic choices by 10.4 percentage points (pp.) (95 % CI [-0.139, -0.069], p < 0.001, OR = 0.561), while those in the pregnancy/lactation warning condition did it by 3.8 pp. (95 % CI [-0.071, -0.005], p = 0.025, OR = 0.806). The driving-drinking warning had no significant effect. Participants exposed to the combined warnings label, or the assorted warnings reduced alcohol purchase decisions by 6.1 pp. (95 % CI [-0.095, -0.028], p < 0.001, OR = 0.708) and 4.3 pp. (95 % CI [-0.076, -0.010], p = 0.011, OR = 0.782), respectively. Cancer warning outperformed other labels and was effective for subgroups such as pregnant/lactating women, young adults, and low-income individuals. CONCLUSIONS: General cancer risk warnings are more effective at reducing alcohol purchase decisions compared to warning labels for specific groups or labels using multiple warnings. In addition to warning labels, other policies should be considered for addressing well-known alcohol-related risks (e.g., drinking and driving).

Regulations that restrict the tasks that credentialed workers are allowed to perform may affect a firm's input choices, output, and which part of the market the firm serves. Using dental practice survey data from 1989 to 2014 and a stacked difference-in-differences design, this paper examines the effects of state-level scope of practice regulations on the behavior of dental practices. Results suggest that scope of practice deregulation in regards to dental hygienists' ability to administer nitrous oxide or local anesthesia is associated with fewer dentist visits per week in the short-term, lower patient wait times, and an increased likelihood of treating lower revenue generating publicly insured patients. There is weak evidence that scope of practice deregulation alters a practice's labor inputs.

Based on multimodal measurement methods of NASA task load index (NASA-TLX), task performance, surface electromyography (sEMG), heart rate (HR), and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), this study conducted experimental measurements and analyses under 16 different load levels of physical fatigue and mental fatigue combination conditions. This study observed the interaction between physical fatigue and mental fatigue at different levels, and at the subjective level, the effect of physical fatigue on mental fatigue was greater than that of mental fatigue on physical fatigue. Secondly, the results of fNIRS analysis showed that the premotor cortex is affected by physical fatigue, and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex is affected by mental fatigue. Finally, this study constructed a fatigue classification model with an accuracy of 95.3%, which takes multimodal physiological data as input and 16 fatigue states as output. The research results will provide a basis for fatigue analysis, evaluation, and improvement in complex working situations.


Based on multimodal measurement methods of NASA-TLX, task performance, sEMG, HR, and fNIRS, this study illustrated the relationship between physical fatigue and mental fatigue, and proposed a classification method for different fatigue situations.

The article concerns the mechatronic design and experimental investigations of the HUBO automated human body scanning system. Functional problems that should be solved by using the developed scanning system are defined. These include reducing the number of sensors used while eliminating the need to rotate a human and ensuring the automation of the scanning process. Research problems that should be the subject of experimental research are defined. The current state of the art in the field of systems and techniques for scanning the human figure is described. The functional and technical assumptions for the HUBO scanning system are formulated. The mechanical design of the scanner, the hardware and information system architectures as well as the user's mobile application are presented. The method of operation of the scanning system and its innovative features are discussed. It is demonstrated that the developed solution of the scanning system allows the identified problems to be overcome. The methodology of the experimental research of the scanning system based on the photogrammetry technique is described. The results of laboratory studies with the use of dummies and experimental research with human participation are presented. The scope of the research carried out allows answers to the identified research problems related to the scanning of the human figure using the photogrammetry technique to be obtained. As part of laboratory tests using a measuring dummy, a mean error of 0.65 mm and standard deviation of the mean of 0.65 mm were obtained for the best scanner configuration. Research with human participation was carried out for the scanner version, in which the scanning time was 30 s, with the possibility of its reduction to 15 s. The results of studies using realistic dummies and with human participation were compared using the root mean square error parameter (RMSE) provided by the AliceVision framework, which was available for all analyzed objects. As a result, it was observed that these results are comparable, i.e., the RMSE parameter is equal to about 1 px.

This paper introduces the Ghent Semi-spontaneous Speech Paradigm (GSSP), a new method for collecting unscripted speech data for affective-behavioral research in both experimental and real-world settings through the description of peer-rated pictures with a consistent affective load. The GSSP was designed to meet five criteria: (1) allow flexible speech recording durations, (2) provide a straightforward and non-interfering task, (3) allow for experimental control, (4) favor spontaneous speech for its prosodic richness, and (5) require minimal human interference to enable scalability. The validity of the GSSP was evaluated through an online task, in which this paradigm was implemented alongside a fixed-text read-aloud task. The results indicate that participants were able to describe images with an adequate duration, and acoustic analysis demonstrated a trend for most features in line with the targeted speech styles (i.e., unscripted spontaneous speech versus scripted read-aloud speech). A speech style classification model using acoustic features achieved a balanced accuracy of 83% on within-dataset validation, indicating separability between the GSSP and read-aloud speech task. Furthermore, when validating this model on an external dataset that contains interview and read-aloud speech, a balanced accuracy score of 70% is obtained, indicating an acoustic correspondence between the GSSP speech and spontaneous interviewee speech. The GSSP is of special interest for behavioral and speech researchers looking to capture spontaneous speech, both in longitudinal ambulatory behavioral studies and laboratory studies. To facilitate future research on speech styles, acoustics, and affective states, the task implementation code, the collected dataset, and analysis notebooks are available.

Diabetic peripheral neuropathy(DPN) is a chronic complication resulted from peripheral nerve injury in the late stage of diabetes. It involves a variety of pathological changes such as oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum stress, neuroinflammation, and apoptosis of Schwann cells(SCs). DPN is the main factor leading to lower limb disability or amputation in diabetic patients, with high incidence, long disease course, and poor prognosis. The modern medicine treatment of DPN mainly focuses on controlling blood glucose and improving microcirculation and nerve nutrition, which can only mitigate the clinical symptoms and not fundamentally reverse the pathological changes of peripheral nerves. Autophagy is a self-clearing mechanism that maintains cellular homeostasis by removing excess metabolites. Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM), featuring the holistic concept and syndrome differentiation, can treat chronic diseases in a multi-target, multi-pathway, and wide-range manner. Modern studies have shown that the occurrence and development of DPN are related to a variety of pathological changes, and autophagy is a key mechanism associated with DPN. The environment with persistent high glucose can lead to the inhibition or over-activation of peripheral nerve cells, which causes irreversible damage of nerve cells and the occurrence and development of DPN. Therefore, restoring autophagy balance and reducing nerve damage is one of the key ways to treat DPN. The recent studies have confirmed that some active ingredients in traditional Chinese medicines and TCM compound prescriptions can inhibit the oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum stress, mitochondrial damage, inflammation, and apoptosis of SCs in DPN by regulating the autophagy pathway, thus playing a role in the prevention and treatment of DPN. However, the systematic induction in this field remains to be carried out. This paper reviewed the relevant literature, explained the mechanism of TCM in the prevention and treatment of DPN by regulating autophagy, and summarized the potential targets of TCM in the treatment of DPN, with a view to providing new ideas for clinical research and drug development.

Compared to the fee-for-service (FFS) model, the managed care delivery system has the potential to improve health care management, increase provider accountability, and support better monitoring of health care quality. However, managed care organizations may attempt to control costs by curbing utilization among Medicaid beneficiaries or reducing reimbursement for Medicaid services. It is an empirical question whether managed care increases or decreases utilization of services. Using detailed pediatric public insurance dental claims data from 2016 through 2018, we examined whether the transition from FFS to managed care affects rates of dental care utilization. Between 2016 and 2018, Indiana, Missouri and Nebraska transitioned pediatric Medicaid beneficiaries from public dental fee-for-service programs to private managed care entities. Using an extended two-way fixed-effects estimation framework, we found that dental managed care leads to a decline in dental care utilization, especially when compared to states that maintain FFS provision of Medicaid dental services.

BACKGROUND: Quality of life (QoL) is an important health index for older adults. AIM: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of 16 weeks of aerobic training to 8 weeks of aerobic followed by 8 weeks of combined (i.e., resistance and aerobic exercises) training, as well as to a control group on the QoL of older women exercising in the aquatic environment. METHODS: 52 older women were first randomized to either aerobic training (n = 35) or a control group (n = 17). After 8 weeks of intervention, participants initially assigned to the aerobic training group were again randomized to either 8 additional weeks of aerobic (n = 17) or combined training (n = 18). Aerobic training was performed at the heart rate percentage associated with the anaerobic threshold, while resistance training sets were performed at maximal effort. The control group performed low-intensity water-based therapeutic exercises. QoL was assessed before (week 0) and after the intervention (week 17) using the WHOQOL-BREEF and WHOQOL-OLD questionnaires. Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) and Bonferroni post hoc tests (α = 0.05) were used to compare time points and groups. RESULTS: QoL improved significantly only in the training groups after the 16-week training intervention, whereas it remained unchanged in the control group. In addition, autonomy, environment, and present, past and future activities domains were more impacted after combined training. CONCLUSION: QoL improved only in the water-based training groups, and the addition of resistance exercises to the training program resulted in additional benefits to autonomy, environment, and past, present, and future activities domains. PURPOSE: To review the extant literature relevant to perceptions by direct care nurses toward clinical research endeavors. DESIGN: An integrative review guided by the socioecological model was conducted. METHODS: Five databases were searched to identify relevant peer-reviewed articles; there was no limitation on publication date. FINDINGS: The final sample (N = 9) was systematically appraised. Numerous barriers to direct care nurses' ability to perform study activities on clinical research trials were encountered at all levels: (1) personal-comprehension, education, and training; (2) interpersonal-communication issues within or from the study team, failure to advocate for the patient; (3) organizational-lack of leadership support, knowledge, and time; and (4) community-insufficient guidance and oversight by research-governing bodies. CONCLUSIONS: Direct care nurses report numerous barriers to completing protocol-administered activities for their patients participating in clinical research. A dearth of robust research exists in describing the reasons for, or persistence of, barriers faced by direct care nurses to assisting with research, and there have been little to no interventions to address them. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: As translational research evolves and becomes more complex, there is the need to ensure both the care of clinical research participants and the integrity of the research. Direct care nurses are critical to this endeavor, and potential barriers they face may have significant ramifications for the research enterprise. Recognition of these barriers and eventual interventions designed to address them are needed.

PURPOSE: More than 86% patients experience moderate to severe pain after thoracoscopic surgery. A combination of diverse nonpharmacological pain relief methods is a developing trend for pain management. The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of acupressure in reducing pain after thoracoscopic surgery. DESIGN: A Randomized controlled study with purpose sampling was used for this study. Patients who underwent thoracoscopic surgery at a medical center in central Taiwan were enrolled. Study data was collected from September 2020 to April 2021 after the approval of the institutional review board. A total of 100 participants were randomized into two groups (49 and 51 in the experimental and control groups, respectively). METHODS: Participants in the experimental group received acupressure at the Neiguan (PC6) and Shenmen (HT7) acupoints thrice a day for 2 days, whereas those in the control group received routine treatment and did not receive acupressure. The measurement included questionnaires for the collection of general information, physiological information, and disease rating scale. The Visual Analogue Scale-Pain (VAS-P) was used to measure the severity of pain. SPSS statistical software was used for data analysis. Independent sample t-test and chi-squared test were used for descriptive statistics, and paired t-test and linear mixed model were used to examine the effect of acupressure in alleviating pain. FINDINGS: After acupressure intervention, the pain score of the experimental group was lower than that of the control group, and this difference was significant ß = 17.76, p < 0.001 on day 1 after intervention; ß = 19.80, p < 0.001 on day 2 after intervention. The postoperative pain score in the experimental group on day 2 after intervention was significantly lower than that in the control group (t = 2.039, p = 0.044). After the subjects received acupressure, pain index significantly decreased after considering the interaction between time and group (p < 0.001). Regardless of the type of surgery, there were significant differences in pain index when the interaction between time and group was considered (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: This study provided an experimental basis that acupressure can help in pain management in patients after thoracoscopic surgery, and the pain relief results become more significant as the duration of intervention increases. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Acupressure is effective in relieving postoperative pain in any type of thoracoscopic surgery. Nurses can use acupressure to help control pain in patients after thoracoscopic surgery.

Automated and autonomous vehicles are in an intensive development phase. It is a phase that requires a lot of modelling and experimental research. Experimental research into these vehicles is in its initial state. There is a lack of findings and standardized recommendations for the organization and creation of research scenarios. There are also many difficulties in creating research scenarios. The main difficulties are the large number of systems for simultaneous checking. Additionally, the vehicles have a very complicated structure. A review of current publications allowed for systematization of the research scenarios of vehicles and their components as well as the measurement systems used. These include perception systems, automated response to threats, and critical situations in the area of road safety. The scenarios analyzed ensure that the planned research tasks can be carried out, including the investigation of systems that enable autonomous driving. This study uses passenger cars equipped with highly sophisticated sensor systems and localization devices. Perception systems are the necessary equipment during the conducted study. They provide recognition of the environment, mainly through vision sensors (cameras) and lidars. The research tasks include autonomous driving along a detected road lane on a curvilinear track. The effective maintenance of the vehicle in this lane is assessed. The location used in the study is a set of specialized research tracks on which stationary or moving obstacles are often placed.

This article concerns the research of the HUBO full-body scanner, which includes the analysis and selection of the scanner's geometrical parameters in order to obtain the highest possible accuracy of the reconstruction of a human figure. In the scanner version analyzed in this paper, smartphone cameras are used as sensors. In order to process the collected photos into a 3D model, the photogrammetry technique is applied. As part of the work, dependencies between the geometrical parameters of the scanner are derived, which allows to significantly reduce the number of degrees of freedom in the selection of its geometrical parameters. Based on these dependencies, a numerical analysis is carried out, as a result of which the initial values of the geometrical parameters are pre-selected and distribution of scanner cameras is visualized. As part of the experimental research, the influence of selected scanner parameters on the scanning accuracy is analyzed. For the experimental research, a specially prepared dummy was used instead of the participation of a real human, which allowed to ensure the constancy of the scanned object. The accuracy of the object reconstruction was assessed in relation to the reference 3D model obtained with a scanner of superior measurement uncertainty. On the basis of the conducted research, a method for the selection of the scanner's geometrical parameters was finally verified, leading to the arrangement of cameras around a human, which guarantees high accuracy of the reconstruction. Additionally, to quantify the results, the quality rates were used, taking into account not only the obtained measurement uncertainty of the scanner, but also the processing time and the resulting efficiency.

BACKGROUND: Implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP) in healthcare remains challenging. The influence of leadership has been recognized. However, few randomized trials have tested effects of an educational and skills building intervention for leaders in clinical settings. AIMS: Test effects of an EBP leadership immersion intervention on EBP attributes over time among two cohorts of leaders at a national comprehensive cancer center. METHODS: A stratified, randomized, wait-list group, controlled design was conducted. Participants received the evidence-based intervention one year apart (2020, n = 36; 2021, n = 30) with EBP knowledge, beliefs, competencies, implementation self-efficacy, implementation behaviors, and organizational readiness measured at pre- and post-intervention, and one- and two-year follow-ups. Participants applied learnings to a specific clinical or organization priority topic. RESULTS: Baseline outcomes variables and demographics did not differ between cohorts except for age and years of experience. Both cohorts demonstrated significant changes in EBP attributes (except organizational readiness) post-intervention. Mixed linear modeling revealed group by time effects at 3-months for all EBP attributes except implementation behaviors and organizational readiness after the first intervention, favoring cohort 2020, with retained effects for EBP beliefs and competencies at one year. Following Cohort 2021 intervention, at 12-weeks post-intervention, implementation behaviors were significantly higher for cohort 2021. LINKING EVIDENCE TO ACTION: An intensive EBP intervention can increase healthcare leaders' EBP knowledge and competencies. Aligning EBP projects with organizational priorities is strategic. Follow-up with participants to retain motivation, knowledge and competencies is essential. Future research must demonstrate effects on clinical outcomes.

Twenty-first century urbanization poses increasing challenges for mental health. Epidemiological studies have shown that mental health problems often accumulate in urban areas, compared to rural areas, and suggested possible underlying causes associated with the social and physical urban environments. Emerging work indicates complex urban effects that depend on many individual and contextual factors at the neighbourhood and country level and novel experimental work is starting to dissect potential underlying mechanisms. This review summarizes findings from epidemiology and population-based studies, neuroscience, experimental and experience-based research and illustrates how a combined approach can move the field towards an increased understanding of the urbanicity-mental health nexus.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this review article is to give an overview over recent experimental neurobiological research on dissociation in borderline personality disorder (BPD), in order to inform clinicians and to stimulate further research. First, we introduce basic definitions and models that conceptualize dissociation from a transdiagnostic perspective. Then, we discuss recent findings in BPD. RECENT FINDINGS: Stress-related dissociation is a key symptom of BPD, closely linked to other core domains of the disorder (emotion dysregulation, identity disturbances, and interpersonal disturbances). The understanding of neurobiological correlates of dissociation across different psychiatric disorders (e.g., dissociative disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder) is steadily increasing. At the same time, studies explicitly focusing on dissociation in BPD are still scarce. There is evidence for adverse effects of dissociation on affective-cognitive functioning (e.g., interference inhibition), body perception, and psychotherapeutic treatment response in BPD. On the neural level, increased activity in frontal regions (e.g., inferior frontal gyrus) and temporal areas (e.g., inferior and superior temporal gyrus) during symptom provocation tasks and during resting state was observed, although findings are still diverse and need to be replicated. Conceptual differences and methodological differences in study designs and sample characteristics (e.g., comorbidities, trauma history) hinder a straightforward interpretation and comparison of studies. Given the potentially detrimental impact of dissociation in BPD, more research on the topic is strongly needed to deepen the understanding of this complex clinical condition.

OBJECTIVE: Compared with standard wines, low-alcohol wines may have several social and health benefits. Innovative production processes have led to high-quality light wines. It is, however, unclear how consumers perceive and consume these alcohol-reduced wines. The current study aimed to investigate how people evaluate low-alcohol wine (Sauvignon Blanc) and if the reduction in alcohol and the information that a wine is low in alcohol influences consumption. DESIGN: Randomised controlled trial (RCT). SETTING: Participants were invited to a wine tasting and randomised into one of the three conditions: they either tasted a 'new white wine' (12·5 % alcohol content), a 'new low-alcohol white wine' (8·0 % alcohol content) or they tasted the low-alcohol wine but were not aware that the wine was reduced in alcohol (low-alcohol, blinded). PARTICIPANTS: Ninety participants (42 % male, mean age = 41 (sd 14) years). RESULTS: Mean comparisons showed similar ratings for the low-alcohol conditions and the standard alcohol condition (mean > 5·6/7). The mean consumed amount across all conditions did not differ (162 (sd 71) ml, (F2,86 = 0·43, P > 0·05)), hence people who tasted the low-alcohol wine consumed approximately 30 % less alcohol. However, participants were willing to pay more for the normal wine compared with the low-alcohol wine, (F2,87 = 3·14, P < 0·05). CONCLUSIONS: Participants did not alter their drinking behaviour in response to the reduced alcohol content, and the low-alcohol wine was perceived positively. There might be an emerging market potential for wine of reduced alcohol content, but consumers may not be willing to pay the same price as for the standard wine.

PURPOSE: Sedentary time relates to higher anxiety and more negative affect in children. This study assessed whether interrupting sitting over 3 hours is sufficient to influence state anxiety, positive affect, or negative affect, and tested weight status as a moderator. METHODS: Analyses were the second (preplanned) purpose of a larger study. Children (N = 61; age: mean [SD] = 9.5 [1.3]; 43% healthy weight) completed 2 experimental conditions: continuous sitting for 3 hours and sitting for 3 hours interrupted with walking for 3 minutes in every 30 minutes. State anxiety, positive affect, and negative affect were reported at pretest and posttest. Multilevel models for repeated measures assessed whether experimental condition predicted posttest scores. RESULTS: Experimental condition was unrelated to posttest state anxiety or positive affect. Weight status moderated how experimental condition influenced posttest negative affect (P = .003). Negative affect was lower in the children of healthy weight after interrupted sitting (vs continuous sitting; ß = -0.8; 95% confidence interval, -1.5 to 0.0, P = .05), but it was higher in the children with overweight/obesity after interrupted sitting (vs continuous sitting; ß = 0.6; 95% confidence interval, 0.0 to 1.2, P = .06). CONCLUSIONS: Interrupting sitting acutely reduced negative affect in children of healthy weight, but not in children with overweight. Further research is needed to better understand the potential emotional benefits of sitting interruptions in youth.

The decomposition of vertebrate cadavers on the soil surface produces nutrient-rich fluids that enter the soil profile, leaving clear evidence of the presence of a cadaver decomposition island. Few studies, however, have described soil physicochemistry under human cadavers, or compared the soil between human and non-human animal models. In this study, we sampled soil to 5 cm depth at distances of 0 cm and 30 cm from cadavers, as well as from control sites 90 cm distant, from five human and three pig cadavers at the Australian Facility for Taphonomic Experimental Research (AFTER). We found that soil moisture, electrical conductivity, nitrate, ammonium, and total phosphorus were higher in soil directly under cadavers (0 cm), with very limited lateral spread beyond 30 cm. These patterns lasted up to 700 days, indicating that key soil nutrients might be useful markers of the location of the decomposition island for up to 2 years. Soil phosphorus was always higher under pigs than humans, suggesting a possible difference in the decomposition and soil processes under these two cadaver types. Our preliminary study highlights the need for further experimental and replicated research to quantify variability in soil properties, and to identify when non-human animals are suitable analogues.

Business researchers use experimental methods extensively due to their high internal validity. However, controlled laboratory and crowdsourcing settings often introduce issues of artificiality, data contamination, and low managerial relevance of the dependent variables. Field experiments can overcome these issues but are traditionally time- and resource-consuming. This primer presents an alternative experimental setting to conduct online field experiments in a time- and cost-effective way. It does so by introducing the Facebook A/B split test functionality, which allows for random assignment of manipulated variables embedded in ecologically-valid stimuli. We compare and contrast this method against laboratory settings and Amazon Mechanical Turk in terms of design flexibility, managerial relevance, data quality control, and sample representativeness. We then provide an empirical demonstration of how to set up, pre-test, run, and analyze FBST experiments.

Clinical research in gynecologic oncology has seen a proliferation of studies that investigate the effectiveness of treatments using existing data sources such as cancer registries, electronic health records, and insurance claims. These observational studies are often feasible when randomized trial may not be, and may be more generalizable than randomized trials, because of greater diversity in the study populations. While statistical methods such as multivariable regression, matching, stratification, and weighting can adjust for the confounding in observational studies, statistical adjustment cannot control for confounders that are unmeasured in the data. Observational studies comparing the effectiveness of treatments for gynecologic malignancies are susceptible to bias from unmeasured confounding because factors like functional status, frailty and disease burden, which influence treatment selection and outcome, are often not reported in existing data sources. Like randomized trials, quasi-experimental designs attempt to account for both measured and unmeasured confounding by exploiting natural experiments arising in the real world. These methods are underutilized in gynecologic oncology research and are particularly relevant to studies that use large datasets to study the effectiveness of treatments. In this review, we consider methodological challenges that arise in the analysis of non-randomized studies, and describe how application of quasi-experimental methodology can estimate unbiased treatment effects even in the presence of unmeasured confounders.
