Physiologically based stress detection systems have proven to be effective in identifying different stress conditions in the body to determine the source of stress and be able to counteract it. However, some stress conditions have not been widely studied, including thermal stress, cognitive stress, and combined (thermal-cognitive) stress conditions, which are frequently encountered in work or school environments. In order to develop systems to detect and differentiate these conditions, it is necessary to identify the physiological indicators that characterize each of them. The present research aims to identify which physiological indicators (heart rate, respiratory rate, galvanic skin response, and local temperature) could differentiate different stress conditions (no-stress, cognitive stress, thermal stress, and combined (thermal-cognitive) stress conditions). Thirty participants were exposed to cognitive, thermal, and combined stress sources while recording their physiological signals. The findings indicate that both mean heart rate and mean galvanic skin response identify moderate thermal and cognitive stress conditions as distinct from a no-stress condition, yet they do not differentiate between the two stress conditions. Additionally, heart rate uniquely identifies the cognitive-thermal stress condition, effectively distinguishing this combined stress condition from the singular stress conditions and the no-stress condition. Mean local temperature specifically signals thermal stress conditions, whereas mean respiratory rate accurately identifies cognitive stress conditions, with both indicators effectively separating these conditions from each other and from the no-stress condition. This is the first basis for differentiating thermal and cognitive stress conditions through physiological indicators.

BACKGROUND: Interest is growing in the search for alternatives to traditional feed additives, so this study aimed to investigate the effect of adding zeolite to the concentrate diets of Awassi lambs with or without urea on growth performance, nutrient digestion, and health status. A total of 45 Awassi lambs similar in weight (24 ± 2 kg) and age (3 months ± 4 days) were divided into three groups: the first group (G1) fed on a concentrate diet supplemented with 1% urea; the second group (G2) fed on the concentrate diet supplemented with 1% urea and 3% zeolite, and the third group (G3) fed on a urea-free diet supplemented with 3% zeolite. RESULTS: The results showed a significant increase (P ≤ 0.05) in final live weight, daily and total weight gain for group G2 compared to groups G1and G3, with a significant superiority (P ≤ 0.05) of group G3 over the control group G1. Significant improvement (P < 0.05) was also observed in feed consumption and feed conversion ratio in diets supplemented with zeolite for groups G2 and G3 compared to the control group G1. Additionally, there was a significant increase (P ≤ 0.05) in nutrient digestion and nutritional value in the diet of group G2 containing urea with added zeolite compared to groups G1 and G3. Zeolite did not affect the levels of glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, and albumin in the blood, but a significant increase (P ≤ 0.05) in total blood protein level and a significant decrease (P ≤ 0.05) in blood urea level were noted for groups G2 and G3 compared to the control group G1. CONCLUSIONS: Adding zeolite to urea-containing concentrate diets improved growth rates and nutrient digestion, of Awassi lambs. In diets without urea, zeolite improved growth rates without affecting nutrient digestion coefficients, in both types of diets, zeolite increased total protein levels and decreased blood urea levels, with all physiological indicators in lambs blood remaining within normal limits.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, masks proved to be an effective measure in preventing virus transmission. However, many people have reported discomfort and negative perceptions toward wearing masks, especially during physical activity. This study aims to evaluate the discomfort and adverse perceptions related to various mask types among young, healthy adults during light exercise, including sitting, stationary stepping, and stair climbing. The study also examines the extent to which masks influence physiological indicators of physical well-being. METHODS: The study was conducted in two stages at the campus hospital of Shantou University. In Stage 1, 20 healthy college students (10 males, 10 females) were recruited to identify the mask with the most substantial physiological and psychological impact among four types: KN95 respirators, surgical masks, cloth masks, and 3D medical masks. These specific types were chosen due to their widespread use and varying levels of filtration and breathability. In Stage 2, 14 healthy college students (7 males, 7 females) were included to examine the effects of the identified mask across various levels of physical exertion. Subjective perceptions were measured using the Mask-Related Discomfort and Perception Score (MRDPS), and physiological parameters such as body temperature, blood pressure, pulse rate, and vital capacity were recorded. RESULTS: The KN95 respirator and cloth mask were associated with the highest MRDPS, indicating significant discomfort among wearers (p < 0.05). The use of KN95 respirators had the largest impact on MRDPS during stair stepping (ß = 10.357, 95% CI [5.755, 14.959]). Physiological parameters showed minor variations across different masks, with KN95 respirators significantly associated with reduced diastolic blood pressure (ß=-7.806, 95% CI [-12.294, -3.318]) and pulse rate (ß=-10.661, 95% CI [-18.896, -2.425]) in Stage 1. However, after controlling for exercise pace in Stage 2, wearing a KN95 respirator did not significantly affect these parameters. CONCLUSIONS: KN95 respirators and cloth masks were found to cause the most discomfort during light physical activity, with males reporting higher discomfort levels than females. While these masks are associated with varying levels of perceived discomfort, their impact on physiological indicators is relatively modest. Future research should include larger and more diverse samples , continuous monitoring of physiological parameters during exercise, and exploration of the underlying mechanisms of gender differences in mask discomfort.

AIMS: The gut microbiome has been recognized as a significant contributor to primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), with mounting evidence indicating associations between bacterial components and cancers of the digestive system. METHODS AND RESULTS: Here, to characterize gut bacterial signature in patients with primary HCC and to assess the diagnostic potential of bacterial taxa for primary HCC, 21 HCC patients and 21 healthy first-degree relatives (control group) were enrolled in this study. Bacterial DNA in the fecal samples was quantified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. We found that 743 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were shared between patients with primary HCC and healthy controls. Of these, 197 OTUs were unique to patients with primary HCC, while 95 OTUs were unique to healthy subjects. Additionally, we observed significant differences in the abundance of Ruminococcaceae_UCG-014 and Romboutsia between patients with primary HCC and their healthy first-degree relatives. Besides, the relative abundance of Ruminococcaceae_UCG-014 and Prevotella_9 was positively correlated with physiological indicators including AST, ALT, ALB, or TBIL. Signature bacterial taxa could serve as non-invasive biomarkers, of which Romboutsia and Veillonella were identified as differential taxa in fecal samples from patients with HCC compared to healthy controls. Romboutsia showed a strong association with HCC (AUC = 0.802). Additionally, the combination of Romboutsia and Veillonella (AUC = 0.812) or the grouping of Fusobacterium, Faccalibacterium, and Peptostreptococcacae together (AUC = 0.762) exhibited promising outcomes for the diagnosis of HCC. CONCLUSIONS: The composition of gut microbes in patients with HCC was found to be significantly altered. Differential taxa Romboutsia, Veillonella, and Peptostreptococcacae could be tested for identification of HCC.

Visually induced motion sickness(VIMS)is the major barrier to be broken in the development of virtual reality(VR)technology,which seriously affects the progress in the VR industry.Therefore,the detection and evaluation of VIMS has become a hot research topic nowadays.We review the progress in physiological assessment of VIMS in VR based on several physiological indicators,including electroencephalogram(EEG),postural sway,eye movements,heart rate variability,and skin electrical signals,and summarize the available therapies,aiming to provide an outlook on the future research directions of VIMS.

Periphyton has important ecological functions. It can even exist in environments with strong ultraviolet radiation. However, knowledge of periphyton under ultraviolet is limited, which limits the understanding and application of periphyton in environments with high ultraviolet radiation. In this study, immature periphyton (IMP) and mature periphyton (MP) under ultraviolet B (UVB) irradiation were investigated and compared in terms of physiological characteristics and bacterial community. Analysis of the physiological characteristics showed that the response patterns of IMP and MP to UVB were similar. IMP and MP could adapt to UVB of 1 W/m2 well. However, high-intensity UVB (2 and 3 W/m2) reduced the periphyton biomass, inhibited photosynthesis and antioxidant enzyme activity and caused severe lipid peroxidation in both IMP and MP. Integrated Biological Response (IBR) analysis and toxicological model fitting showed that the ED50 values of UVB for IMP and MP were 1.25 and 1.50 W/m2, respectively. 16 S rRNA gene analysis showed that in both IMP and MP, bacterial community composition, assembly and function were affected by UVB. In addition, the response of the bacterial community in IMP to UVB was stronger than that in MP. The diversity of the IMP community was inhibited by UVB, but that of the MP community was not. Proteobacteria and Deinococcus-Thermus are key microorganisms responsible for tolerance to UVB stress. Neutral community model fitting showed that both UVB and the development process caused the determinism of bacterial succession. However, UVB may weaken the deterministic process caused by development. Functional prediction showed that many metabolic functions of periphyton were inhibited by UVB in IMP and MP. However, UVB caused different changes (enhancement or inhibition) of some ecological functions in them. This study provides valuable information for understanding periphyton in environments with UVB radiation, which may be used to improve the application of periphyton in these environments.

Smart wearable devices play an increasingly important role in physiological monitoring and disease prevention because they are portable, real-time, dynamic and continuous.The popularization of smart wearable devices among people under high-altitude environment would be beneficial for the prevention for heart and brain diseases related to high altitude. The current review comprehensively elucidates the effects of high-altitude environment on the heart and brain of different population and experimental subjects, the characteristics and applications of different types of wearable devices, and the limitations and challenges for their application. By emphasizing their application values, this review provides practical reference information for the prevention of high-altitude disease and the protection of life and health.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination of croplands has become a threat to crop food safety and human health. In this study, we investigated the effect of sulfur on the growth of water spinach under Cd stress and the amount of Cd accumulation by increasing the soil sulfate content. We found that the biomass of water spinach significantly increased after the application of sulfur while the shoot Cd concentration was considerably reduced (by 31%). The results revealed that sulfur could promote the expression of PME and LAC genes, accompanied by an increase in PME activity and lignin content. Also, the cell wall Cd content of water spinach roots was significantly increased under sulfur treatment. This finding suggests that sulfur could enhance the adsorption capacity of Cd by promoting the generation of cell wall components, thereby inhibiting the transportation of Cd via the apoplastic pathway. In addition, the higher expression of Nramp5 under the Cd1S0 (concentration of Cd and sulfur are 2.58 and 101.31 mg/kg respectively) treatment led to increased Cd uptake. The CAX3 and ABC transporters and GST were expressed at higher levels along with a higher cysteine content and GSH/GSSR value under Cd1S1 (concentration of Cd and sulfur are 2.60 and 198.36 mg/kg respectively) treatment, which contribute to the Cd detoxification and promotion of Cd compartmentalization in root vacuoles, thereby reducing the translocation of Cd to the shoot via the symplastic pathway.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disorders occur in the first days after heart surgery. One of the major causes of sleep disorders after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) is subsequent changes in physiological indicators, such as systolic blood pressure (BP), respiratory rate (RR), saturation of oxygen (O2), and heart rate (RR). This study is aimed to determine the effect of lavender aromatherapy on patients' sleep quality and physiological indicators after CABG. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a randomized clinical trial. Patients after CABG surgery were randomly allocated into the lavender and distilled water groups. Patients in the intervention group inhaled lavender while those in the control group inhaled distilled water for 10 hours. Sleep quality and physiological postoperative data were collected for 3 days. Data were analyzed using repeated measurement test, sample t-test, and Chi-square test. RESULTS: Repeated measurement test showed no significant difference between the lavender and distilled water groups in terms of systolic BP, RR, O2 saturation, HR, and body temperature after matching the effect of time and its interactive effect with the intervention (p > 0.05). This test revealed a significant difference between the lavender and distilled water groups in terms of sleep quality (p < 0.001), such that the sleep quality was higher in the lavender group. CONCLUSION: Lavender aromatherapy can increase patients' sleep quality after CABG surgery. However, it cannot completely treat sleep disorders in such patients. OBJECTIVES: Sensitive skin (SS) is a condition characterised by high reactivity, low tolerance, and susceptibility to allergies of the skin. Owing to changes in the environment and marketing strategies, as well as the increasing public awareness about skin care, attention to skin condition is gradually increasing. The aim of this study is to explore the differences in the skin barrier of SS and normal skin (NS). METHODS: A questionnaire survey was conducted and basic indicators of the skin barrier were analysed. It was found that sebum secretion in the SS group was lower than that in the NS group, suggesting that the development of SS might be associated with sebum secretion and its specific components. Next, an ultra performance liquid chromatography-quadruple time-of-flight mass spectrometer was used to identify facial sebum components in female volunteers. RESULTS: The results showed that the sebum of female volunteers with SS had high levels of ceramides, glycerophosphoethanolamines, and diacylglycerols, and low levels of glucosylceramides, glycerophosphoserines, glycerophosphocholines, and triacylglycerols. CONCLUSION: Analysis of lipid functions suggested that the main reason for SS development in women might be a barrier dysfunction caused by excessive apoptosis and lack of water. Therefore, anti-allergy additives in cosmetic products that could inhibit apoptosis of keratinocytes and methods to maintain the stability of water molecules in the skin should be further studied.

Objective: To investigate the prevalence and related risk factors of prostate diseases in traffic policemen. Methods: A total of 848 traffic policemen who took part in the physical examination among August and September in 2016 were selected as research subjects, and a questionnaire survey was conducted to collect their information including smoking, alcohol drinking, biological and physiological indicators, as well as prostate disease etc. The relationship between the prevalence of prostate diseases and related risk factors was analyzed by Non-conditional Logistic Regression. Results: The total prostate disease prevalence rate was 40.2% in the study subjects, and there is statistical significance (P<0.05) of differences between prostate disease group and non disease group in age, work age, smoking, drinking and field work. Single factor analysis showed that age, work age, smoking, and field work are independent risk factors of prostate disease (P<0.05) . Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that increasing age (OR 1.03) , smoking (OR 1.92) and field work time (OR 1.47) significantly increased the risk of prostate disease in male police after age, smoking, drinking, BMI, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, blood lipids and other indicators were adjusted. Conclusion: age, smoking and field work time are risk factors of prostate diseases in the traffic police. There is great significance in publicizing the harmful effects of smoking and reducing the duration of field work.

The germinations of three common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) varieties and two Tartary buckwheat (Fagopyrum tataricum) varieties seeds are known to be affected by high temperature. However, little is known about the physiological mechanism affecting germination and the effect of melatonin (MT) on buckwheat seed germination under high temperature. This work studied the effects of exogenous MT on buckwheat seed germination under high temperature. MT was sprayed. The parameters, including growth, and physiological factors, were examined. The results showed that exogenous MT significantly increased the germination rate (GR), germination potential (GP), radicle length (RL), and fresh weight (FW) of these buckwheat seeds under high-temperature stress and enhanced the content of osmotic adjustment substances and enzyme activity. Comprehensive analysis revealed that under high-temperature stress during germination, antioxidant enzymes play a predominant role, while osmotic adjustment substances work synergistically to reduce the extent of damage to the membrane structure, serving as the primary key indicators for studying high-temperature resistance. Consequently, our results showed that MT had a positive protective effect on buckwheat seeds exposed to high temperature stress, providing a theoretical basis for improving the ability to adapt to high temperature environments.

AIM: Adapt Fear of Birth Scale (FOBS) for the Chinese context, evaluate psychometric properties and determine optimal cutoff point for pregnant women in 3rd trimester. DESIGN: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study. Cultural guidelines informed the development of the Chinese version of FOBS (FOBS-C) incorporating validation on translation, equivalence index, content validity index, and cognitive debriefing. Thirty pregnant women took a test-retest survey and another 1019 took three cross-sectional surveys. Convergent validation of the FOBS-C involved comparison with Childbirth Attitudes Questionnaire (CAQ), Wijma Delivery Expectancy Questionnaire (WDEQ-A), Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7), and physiological indicators. Cutoff points for FOBS-C were identified using receiver operating characteristic analysis against medical indicators. FINDINGS: FOBS-C demonstrated high translation equivalence (0.833-1), content validity (0.800-0.933), internal consistency (0.897), and test-retest reliability (0.860). Convergent validity was supported by statistically significant correlations between FOBS scores, heart rate, skin conductance changes, as well as scores from WDEQ-A, CAQ, EPDS, and GAD-7. Known-group validity was observed with different medical indicators. FOBS-C cutoff points indicating severe fear of childbirth were identified as 65, 68, 71, and 56, respectively, against WDEQ-A ≥ 85, CAQ ≥ 52, preference for C-section birth, and preference for analgesia, demonstrating known-group validity. A cutoff point of 65 showed the FOBS-C's strongest known-group validity. CONCLUSION: The FOBS-C exhibits robust psychometric properties, making it a valid screening tool for identifying severe fear of birth. Establishing a cutoff point at 65 facilitates effective screening.

Drought is one of the non-biological stresses that affect the growth and development of plants globally, especially Lagenaria siceraria plants. As a common nitric oxide (NO) donor, sodium nitroprusside plays a significant role in enhancing the resistance of plants to non-biological stresses. In this study, 'Yayao' (L. siceraria) was selected as the material through which to investigate the mitigating effects of different concentrations of sodium nitroprusside on L. siceraria plants under moderate drought stress. The results showed that a concentration of 0.25 mmol·L-1 sodium nitroprusside had the best mitigation effect on drought stress in L. siceraria plants. Under this condition, the plant height and leaf dry weight and fresh weight increased by 12.21%, 21.84%, and 40.48%. The photosynthetic parameters were significantly improved, and the fluorescence parameters Fo and Fm were reduced by 17.04% and 7.80%, respectively. The contents of soluble sugar and proline increased by 35.12% and 44.49%, respectively. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and peroxidase (POD) increased by 51.52%, 164.11%, and 461.49%, respectively. The content of malondialdehyde (MDA) decreased by 34.53%, which alleviated the damage caused by reactive oxygen species. Additionally, sodium nitroprusside promoted the expression of genes related to antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, and POD). Overall, this analysis indicates that an appropriate concentration of sodium nitroprusside can enhance the drought tolerance of L. siceraria plants through multiple aspects and alleviate the harm caused by drought stress.

Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is a widely used plasticizer known to pose health risks to humans upon exposure. Recognizing the toxic nature of DEHP, our study aimed to elucidate the response mechanisms in Brassica chinensis L. (Shanghai Qing) when subjected to varying concentrations of DEHP (2 mg kg-1, 20 mg kg-1, and 50 mg kg-1), particularly under tissue stress. The findings underscored the substantial impact of DEHP treatment on the growth of Brassica chinensis L., with increased DEHP concentration leading to a notable decrease in chlorophyll levels and alterations in the content of antioxidant enzyme activities, particularly superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD). Moreover, elevated DEHP concentrations correlated with increased malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. Our analysis detected a total of 507 metabolites in Brassica chinensis L., with 331 in shoots and 176 in roots, following DEHP exposure. There was a significant difference in the number of metabolites in shoots and roots, with 79 and 64 identified, respectively (VIP > 1, p < 0.05). Metabolic pathway enrichment in Brassica chinensis L. shoots revealed significant perturbations in valine, leucine, and isoleucine biosynthesis and degradation, aminoacyl-tRNA, and glucosinolate biosynthesis. In the roots of Brassica chinensis L., varying DEHP levels exerted a substantial impact on the biosynthesis of zeatin, ubiquinone terpenoids, propane, piperidine, and pyridine alkaloids, as well as glutathione metabolic pathways. Notably, DEHP's influence was more pronounced in the roots than in the shoots, with higher DEHP concentrations affecting a greater number of metabolic pathways. This experimental study provides valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying DEHP-induced stress in Brassica chinensis L., with potential implications for human health and food safety.

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of heat stress (HS) on physiological, blood biochemical, and energy metabolism in Dazu black goats. Six wether adult Dazu black goats were subjected to 3 experimental periods: high HS (group H, temperature-humidity index [THI] > 88) for 15 d, moderate HS (group M, THI was 79-88) for 15 d, and no HS (group L, THI < 72) for 15 d. Rectal temperature (RT) and respiratory rate (RR) were determined on d 7 and 15 of each period, and blood samples were collected on d 15 of each period. All goats received glucose (GLU) tolerance test (GTT) and insulin (INS) tolerance test on d 7 and d 10 of each period. The results showed that HS decreased dry matter intake (DMI) and INS concentration (p < 0.05), and increased RT, RR, non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA), cortisol (COR), and total protein (TP) concentrations (p < 0.05). Compared to group L, the urea nitrogen (BUN) concentration increased and GLU concentration decreased in group H (p < 0.05). During the GTT, the area under the curve (AUC) of GLU concentrations increased by 12.26% (p > 0.05) and 40.78% (p < 0.05), and AUC of INS concentrations decreased by 26.04 and 14.41% (p < 0.05) in groups H and M compared to group L, respectively. The INS concentrations were not significant among the three groups (p > 0.05) during the ITT. A total of 60 differentially expressed metabolites were identified in response to groups H and M. In HS, changes in metabolites related to carbohydrate metabolism and glycolysis were identified (p < 0.05). The metabolites related to fatty acid ß-oxidation accumulated, glycogenic and ketogenic amino acids were significantly increased, while glycerophospholipid metabolites were decreased in HS (p < 0.05). HS significantly increased 1-methylhistidine, creatinine, betaine, taurine, taurolithocholic acid, inosine, and hypoxanthine, while decreasing vitamin E in blood metabolites (p < 0.05). In summary, HS changed the metabolism of fat, protein, and energy, impaired GLU tolerance, and mainly increased amino acid metabolism to provide energy in Dazu black goats.

To understand and treat juvenile delinquency, the study explores the relevance of psycho-physiological indicators. It also emphasizes the necessity for thorough research to minimize the gap existing between psycho-physiological measurements and conventional psychosocial components. The study focuses on the relevance of personality features, habituation, and autonomic arousal required to monitor the proper management of delinquent conduct. Through the integration of biological, psychological, and social elements into a multidimensional approach, researchers can uncover novel insights and create cutting-edge therapies for youths who are at risk of delinquent behavior. The study proposes to develop a comprehensive framework that considers biological antecedents in addition to conventional metrics to reach the root cause of delinquency; thereby drawing special attention to current literature and research that emphasizes the psycho-physiological correlates of delinquency. By examining the complex interactions between stress, physiology, emotions, behavior, and social structures, the study highlights the intricacy of delinquent conduct and the necessity for adopting a multifaceted strategy to fully address the problematic areas. Future research paths are emphasized, with a focus on the significance of longitudinal studies, moderating and mediating variables, and creative treatment techniques. By utilizing psycho-physiological markers and psychosocial traits, researchers can tailor intervention strategies to meet individual needs effectively. Early identification of psycho-physiological deficits in children is crucial for implementing successful behavior modification techniques and promoting the well-being of future generations. This is expected to help the government agencies to save time and public money.

Volvariella volvacea is a mushroom known for its high palatability and nutritional value. However, it is susceptible to spoilage thus making it challenging to preserve and keep fresh after harvest, resulting in constraints in long-distance transportation and long-term storage. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of using irradiation and sodium dehydrogenate (SD) as a preservative in the preservation process of V. volvacea. The effects of three treatments of 0.8 kGy 60Coγ irradiation (B), 0.04% SD (C), combined with 0.04% SD and 0.8 kGy 60Coγ irradiation (A) on the postharvest freshness of V. volvacea were investigated. The assessment indices for V. volvacea, including appearance, browning rate, weight loss, respiration rate, MDA content, antioxidant enzyme activities, vitamin C (Vc), and soluble protein content, were measured and compared. The three treatments were compared to determine the changes in storage time over 7 days post-harvest. The results demonstrated that the hardness of the fruiting body exhibited a significant increase of 81.19%, 97.96% and 168.81% in comparison to the control, B and C, respectively, following the application of the treatment A. Compared to the control group, the soluble protein content was significantly increased by 20.28%. Respiration intensity and browning rate were significantly lower in the control treatment, decreasing by 35.07% and 45.49% respectively. On the 6th day of storage, the activities of SOD and POD increased by 81.06% and 73.71%, respectively, compared to the control, which significantly delayed the senescence of the fruiting bodies. The Vc content was significantly increased by 50.27%, 133.90%, and 101.39% in treatment B, which received 0.8 kGy 60Coγ irradiation alone, compared to the control, treatment A, and treatment C, respectively. The treatment C alone significantly reduced respiratory intensity and MDA variables by 39.55% and 31.01%, respectively, compared to the control. The findings can provide theoretical references and technical support for extending the preservation period of V. volvacea after harvesting by using irradiation and sodium dehydrogenate as a preservative.

Introduction: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a prevalent concern among adolescents with depression, yet its relationship with demographic characteristics and physiological indicators remains underexplored. This study aimed to investigate these relationships among inpatient adolescents aged 13 to 18 at a hospital affiliated with Guizhou Medical University. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 222 adolescent inpatients diagnosed with depression. Data on NSSI occurrence, demographic variables (gender, only-child status, age), and physiological indicators (ALT, TSH, FT4, PLR, TG, HDLC, LDLC, FT3, NLR, MLR) were collected and analyzed. Statistical analyses, including correlations and group comparisons, were performed to assess the associations between NSSI and these factors. Results: The prevalence of NSSI among the participants was 40.5%. Significant correlations were found between NSSI and several demographic and physiological factors. Specifically, NSSI was significantly associated with female gender, non-only-child status, younger age, lower ALT levels, higher TSH levels, lower FT4 levels, and higher PLR values. However, no significant differences were observed in TG, HDLC, LDLC, FT3, NLR, or MLR between the NSSI and non-NSSI groups. Discussion: The findings highlight distinct demographic and physiological profiles associated with NSSI among adolescents with depression. The prevalence rate of NSSI underscores its significance as a behavioral manifestation in this population. Further research should explore the underlying mechanisms linking these factors to better inform targeted interventions and treatment strategies for adolescents experiencing NSSI in the context of depression.

Background: Medical health workers play an essential role in the healthcare system and face unique workplace stressors. However, the impact of psychological stress on their physical health has received less attention compared to the general population. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) questionnaires and blood testing results from 1963 medical health workers. Multivariate linear regression analysis using a backward stepwise selection strategy to identify physical examination indicators that were significantly affected by depression. Results: Depression severity, as measured by SDS index score, was positively correlated with the levels of hemoglobin (coefficient 0.0027, p = 0.0412), platelet count (coefficient 0.0005, p = 0.0198), and uric acid (coefficient 0.0004, p = 0.0492), while negatively correlated with red blood cell count (coefficient-0.0895, p = 0.0406). Similar results were observed in the subgroup analysis stratified by age and sex. Conclusion: Our study found a significant association between higher levels of depression and specific physiological indicators in healthcare professionals, including elevated hemoglobin, platelet counts, and uric acid levels, as well as decreased red blood cell counts. These changes in blood parameters may reflect underlying physiological stress and inflammation, potentially increasing overall health risks for healthcare workers. Addressing these physiological changes may be crucial for mitigating the health risks associated with depression. To validate our findings and develop targeted interventions, larger multi-center studies are needed to further explore the relationship between depression severity and blood parameters in healthcare professionals.
