With the depletion of petroleum resources, the development of sustainable alternatives for plastic substitutes has grown in importance. It is urgently desirable yet challenging to design high-performance polyesters with extensive mechanical and prominent gas barrier properties. This work uses bio-based PBF polyester as a matrix, "leaf-shaped" carbon nanotube@boron nitride nano-sheet (CNT@BNNS) covalent hetero-junctions as functional fillers, to fabricate CNT@BNNS/PBF (denoted as CBNP) composite films through an "in-situ polymerizing and hot-pressing" strategy. The covalent CNT "stem" suppresses the re-stacking of BNNS "leaf", endowing hetero-structured CNT@BNNS illustrates superior stress transfer and physical barrier effect. The covalently hetero structure and high orientation degree of CNT@BNNS greatly improve the comprehensive performance of the CBNP composites, including excellent mechanical (strength of 76 MPa, modulus of 2.3 GPa, toughness of 85 MJ m-3, elongation at break of 193%) and gas barrier (O2 of 0.015 barrer, and H2O of 1.1 × 10-14 g cm cm-2 s-1 Pa-1) properties that are much higher than for pure PBF or other-type polyesters, and most engineering plastics. Moreover, the CBNP composites also boast easy recyclability, overcoming the tradeoff between high performance and easy recycling of traditional plastics, which makes the polyester composite competitive as a plastic substitute.

Skin injuries can have unexpected surfaces, leading to uneven wound surfaces and inadequate dressing contact with these irregular surfaces. This can decrease the dressing's haemostatic action and increase the healing period. This study recommends the use of sticky and flexible cryogel coverings to promote faster haemostasis and efficiently handle uneven skin wounds. Alginate cryogels have a fast haemostatic effect and shape flexibility due to their macroporous structure. The material demonstrates potent antibacterial characteristics and enhances skin adherence by adding grafted chitosan with gallic acid. In irregular defect wound models, cryogels can cling closely to uneven damage surfaces due to their amorphous nature. Furthermore, their macroporous structure allows for quick haemostasis by quickly absorbing blood and wound exudate. After giving the dressing a thorough rinse, its adhesive strength reduces and it is simple to remove without causing any damage to the wound. Cryogel demonstrated faster haemostasis than gauze in a wound model on a rat tail, indicating that it has considerable potential for use as a wound dressing in the biomedical area.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the impact of modifying the published scoring system to address identified potential weaknesses in the published scoring system for the Evaluation of Activity Surveys in Youth (EASY). A secondary purpose was to evaluate the EASY on children in Grades 1-5. The EASY is a self-report physical activity instrument for youth. METHODS: Original EASY survey results were collected at one time point from an online panel from participants across the United States as part of a larger cross-sectional University of Minnesota project looking at children's specific activity and sports participation between June and August 2019. Data was evaluated using three common scoring methods: simple summation, mean, and transformed summation. Data was compared by Grades 1-5 and 6-8. RESULTS: The summary statistics of the scores show that there is no statistically significant difference across the scoring methods by population. A paired t-test evaluation of the different scoring methods shows that while the scores are very similar within methodology (simple summation, mean, transformed sum) they are all statistically significantly different from one another, which demonstrates that for any given individual the specific scoring methodology used can result in meaningful differences. The transformed sum provided the strongest methodologic result. Analysis also concluded that administering the scale by proxy to children from grades 1-5 resulted in similar responses to those in Grades 6-8 broadening the appropriate populations able to use this scale. CONCLUSION: The transformed sum is the preferred scoring method. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Not applicable.

BACKGROUND: The caudate lobe (S1) of the liver, due to its deep central position, presents a formidable challenge for laparoscopic resection. Historical skepticism about laparoscopic approaches has been overshadowed by advancements in technology and technique, with recent studies showing comparable outcomes to open surgery. METHODS: This paper introduces the "Easy First" technique and the Sextet strategies for laparoscopic hepatic caudate lobectomy. The strategies include meticulous preoperative planning, optimal trocar placement, and team positioning, tailored to the anatomical complexities of the caudate lobe. RESULTS: With a 0% conversion and mortality rate, our series demonstrates the safety of the "Easy First" technique. The Sextet strategies have been instrumental in navigating the technical challenges, emphasizing the importance of patient selection and surgeon expertise. CONCLUSION: The "Easy First" technique, with its structured approach and the Sextet strategies, offers a replicable method for laparoscopic caudate lobectomy. It underscores the need for stringent patient selection, advanced technical skill, and high-volume center expertise to ensure procedural success and patient safety.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to adapt and assess the content validity of the ASCOT Easy Read (ASCOT-ER) for older people accessing social care. METHODS: A co-production working group of 8 older social care users and their supporters was established to evaluate the comprehensibility and relevance of the ASCOT-ER images, wording and layout. Changes made by the working group were iteratively tested using cognitive interviewing techniques (think aloud) with 25 older social care users not able to self-complete the original ASCOT. RESULTS: Co-research with people with dementia and their supporters was critical to the development of an effective and accessible tool. Issues identified with comprehension, recall, judgement and response were addressed through iterative adjustments to design, layout and wording. An unexpected finding was that illustrations were disliked or disregarded by the majority of people, and, in particular, those living with dementia. This result contrasts with the typical assumption of easy read approaches, where illustrations are expected to enhance comprehension. CONCLUSION: The ASCOT-ER measure for older people is suitable for older people using social care services with mild to moderate dementia, mild cognitive impairment and other age-related needs. The revisions applied were designed to improve comprehension, judgement and response for this group and even those who were most cognitively impaired experienced fewer issues by the final round of testing. Nonetheless, some prompting was still required, particularly for those with higher levels of cognitive impairment and it is likely that some respondents will require the questionnaire to be administered in an interview format.

BACKGROUND: Upward-directed exit-site has been believed to be the worst for frequent ESI by an old retrospective study using straight catheters. No comparison study of 3 exit-site directions using swan-neck catheter has been performed regarding which direction is the best for our endpoints, Easy-to-see the backside area of exit-site: ESBE, Easy-to-disinfect the backside area of exit-site: EDBE, reduction of both exit-site infection (ESI), symptomatic catheter dislocation and peritonitis. METHODS: We assessed the relationship of exit-site direction with our endpoints in a quantitative cross-sectional, multicentered questionnaire survey. Patients who received either non-surgical catheter implantation or exit-site surgery were excluded. RESULTS: The numbers (percentage) of exit-site directions in included 291 patients were upward 79 (26.0), lateralward 108 (37.5) and downward 105 (36.5). Cochran-Armitage analysis showed a significant step-ladder increase in the prevalence of ESI as the direction changed from upward to lateralward to downward (0.15 ± 0.41, 0.25 ± 0.54, 0.38 ± 0.69 episodes/patient-year, p = 0.03). Multivariable regression analysis revealed the upward exit-site independently associates with both higher frequency of ESBE (OR 5.55, 95% CI 2.23-16.45, p < 0.01) and reduction of prevalence of ESI (OR 0.55, 95%CI 0.27-0.98, p = 0.04). Positive association between the prevalence of symptomatic catheter dislocation and ESI (OR 2.84, 95% CI 1.27-7.82, p = 0.01), and inverse association between EDBE and either prevalence of symptomatic catheter dislocation (OR 0.27, 95% CI 0.11-0.72) or peritonitis (OR 0.48, 95% CI 0.23-0.99) observed. CONCLUSION: Upward-directed swan-neck catheter exit-site may be the best for both ESBE and prevention of ESI. EDBE may reduce catheter dislocation and peritonitis. Symptomatic catheter dislocation may predict ESI.

In addressing human reasoning biases, "easy-fix" attentional focus interventions have shown that we can prompt reasoners to align responses with logico-mathematical principles. The current study aimed to test the impact of such interventions on both intuitive and deliberate responses on base-rate items. Using a two-response paradigm, participants provided initial intuitive responses under time constraints and cognitive load, followed by deliberate responses. During the intervention, we used attentional focus manipulations with base-rate items that aimed to redirect participants' attention toward the "logical" base-rate cue (i.e., the logical intervention) or toward the "heuristic" descriptive cue (i.e., the heuristic intervention). The results indicate that the logical intervention led to improved alignment with logico-mathematical principles in both intuitive and deliberate responses, albeit with a modest effect size. Conversely, the heuristic intervention had no discernible impact on accuracy. This indicates that our attentional focus manipulation is more effective at getting reasoners to respect rather than to override base-rates.

An increasing vaccine hesitancy among parents, which has resulted in insufficient rates of immunization, provides reason to reconsider childhood vaccination practices. Studies suggest that parents' decision-making process concerning whether to vaccinate their child is highly influenced by cognitive biases. These biases can be utilized to increase vaccination uptake via changes in the choice context. This article considers childhood vaccination programmes, which involve children being vaccinated in school or daycare unless their parents actively 'opt out'. We suggest that such programmes reconcile parents' decisional authority and vaccination duties. First, opt-out childhood vaccination based in schools or daycare centres are not disrespectful of parental authority. Second, the programme aligns the default setting with a moral obligation to vaccinate one's child that most parents have.

Vibration sensors are widely used in many fields like industry, agriculture, military, medicine, environment, etc. However, due to the speedy upgrading, most sensors composed of rigid or even toxic materials cause pollution to the environment and give rise to an increased amount of electronic waste. To meet the requirement of green electronics, biodegradable materials are advocated to be used to develop vibration sensors. Herein, a vibration sensor is reported based on a strategy of pencil-drawing graphite on paper. Specifically, a repeated pencil-drawing process is carried out on paper with a zigzag-shaped framework and parallel microgrooves, to form a graphite coating, thus serving as a functional conductive layer for electromechanical signal conversion. To enhance the sensor's sensitivity to vibration, a mass is loaded in the center of the paper, so that higher oscillation amplitude could happen under vibrational excitation. In so doing, the paper-based sensor can respond to vibrations with a wide frequency range from 5 Hz to 1 kHz, and vibrations with a maximum acceleration of 10 g. The results demonstrate that the sensor can not only be utilized for monitoring vibrations generated by the knuckle-knocking of plastic plates or objects falling down but also can be used to detect vibration in areas such as the shield cut head to assess the working conditions of machinery. The paper-based MEMS vibration sensor exhibits merits like easy fabrication, low cost, and being environmentally friendly, which indicates its great application potential in vibration monitoring fields.

A unique functionality was reported for a thin-film soft magnetic strip with a certain angle of inclined magnetic anisotropy. It can switch magnetic domain by applying a surface normal field with a certain distribution on the element. The domain switches between a single domain and a multi-domain. Our previous study shows that this phenomenon appears even in the case of the adjacent configuration of multiple narrow strips. It was also reported that the magnetic permeability for the alternating current (AC) magnetic field changes drastically in the frequency range from 10 kHz to 10 MHz as a function of the strength of the distributed magnetic field. In this paper, the correspondence of AC permeability and the magnetic domain as a function of the intensity of the distributed field is investigated. It was confirmed that the extension of the area of the Landau-Lifshitz-like multi-domain on the clustered narrow strips was observed as a function of the intensity of the distributed magnetic field, and this domain extension was matched with the permeability variation. The result leads to the application of this phenomenon to a tunable inductor, electromagnetic shielding, or a sensor for detecting and memorizing the existence of a distributed magnetic field generated by a magnetic nanoparticle in the vicinity of the sensor.

Magnetic skyrmion and its derivatives have demonstrated fascinating topological behaviors with potential applications in future spintronic devices. Despite the recent progress, the spontaneous skyrmion lattice and successive topological transition in the magnets with easy-plane magnetic anisotropy are still elusive especially at room temperature. Here, in a centrosymmetric rhombohedral Nd2Co17 magnet with easy-plane magnetic anisotropy, spontaneous biskyrmions are observed over a wide temperature range across room temperature, and then evolve into enclosed in-plane domains with nanometric size due to the enhancement of the planar magnetic anisotropy. The spontaneous generation of the biskyrmion lattice and its evolution along different crystal orientations demonstrate the crucial role of intrinsic bi-anisotropy and demagnetization effects. This discovery provides a fundamental insight into the nature of topological magnetic textures in easy-plane anisotropy materials and suggests an arena to explore the topological states in rare-earth magnets as well as their applications in spintronics.

INTRODUCTION: Easy Read health documents prepared for people with intellectual disabilities are often generated from Standard Texts. Language in Easy Read versions is typically assumed to be simpler. However, simplification of language may have unintended consequences. This study aimed to explore the differences in language used between Easy Read health material and the Standard Text versions of the same material produced for the general population. METHODS: Five Easy Read/Standard Text pairs were sampled and analysed using Systemic Functional Linguistics. This addressed: how people with intellectual disabilities and others were represented by language, the author stance in relation to the reader and the overall organisation of the text. RESULTS: The Easy Read versions often used language that was less empowering and inclusive. CONCLUSION: Increased awareness of author power and better knowledge of the impact of language choice could help to redress these issues.

OBJECTIVE: To assess and compare the validity of 2D modified Easy Box and measurement of the Beta angle on standard conventional orthopantomogram (OPG) versus 3D cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) OPG-constructed view. DESIGN: A retrospective agreement study. METHODS: The aim of this study was to construct an Easy Box on a standard conventional OPG and to validate this novel method by comparing it with the Easy Box method on 3D CBCT. After approval from the Ethics Committee, OPG and CBCT radiographs were obtained for the study from departmental records and five private practices in the same location (Indore, India). The radiographs were selected based on record availability and with written consent from the participants before the commencement of the study. The records were analysed to enable a comparison and to assess the accuracy of Easy Box construction on both 3D CBCT and standard conventional OPG radiographs. The location of the impacted canine within the Easy Box boundaries and the measurement of the Beta angle were determined on both views. RESULTS: A perfect agreement was obtained for the comparison of 3D Easy Box CBCT analysis with 2D modified Easy Box on OPG for impacted maxillary canines (Kappa = 1.0). A Bland-Altman (LoA) analysis showed no proportional bias in the comparison of the Beta angle on 3D and 2D OPG radiographs. CONCLUSION: Beta angle and 2D modified Easy Box on a conventional OPG yield similar results when compared to Easy Box on 3D CBCT OPG-constructed view. The standard OPG was valuable and cost-effective, particularly in the early stages of diagnosis and treatment planning, either as a substitute or when CBCT was unavailable.

AIM: In comparing the effectiveness and efficiency of different types of post removal systems in removing different types of fiber posts (FPs), this study aims to shed light on the success of removal by currently available drill systems. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 200 maxillary first molars, were root canal treated and prepared to receive posts. The molars were divided into four groups corresponding to four different FPs: Group RX, Radix FP; Group RF, Reforpost Glass Fiber; Group HI; Hi-Rem Endodontic Post; and Group DT, D.T. Light-Post Illusion X-RO. Fiber posts were done with luting by Gradia Core (GC America, Inc.). Groups were again divided into five subgroups corresponding to the technique by which the FP was removed into as follows: Subgroup P, PD-25-1.1 Drill; subgroup G, GC FP Drill; subgroup E, EasyPost Precision Drill; subgroup R, Reaccess Carbide Double Taper Kit; and subgroup H; H-Endodontic Drill. After posts were removed, effectiveness and efficiency were documented. Data were tabulated and statistically analyzed. RESULTS: Strong significant differences regarding efficiency among groups (FP type) and subgroups (drills used) (p = 0.00) were shown by the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test. Subgroup DT-G scored the longest mean removal time (20.9 minutes) while Subgroup RX-R scored the shortest mean removal time (1.4 minutes) Regarding effectiveness, strong significant differences among groups (p = 0.00) and subgroups (p = 0.00) were shown by one-way ANOVA. Subgroup RF-G scored the highest scale (5.2) whereas subgroup HI-R scored the lowest mean scale (1.2). CONCLUSION: The difference was strongly significant between tested post-removal kits and between tested FPs. Re-access Carbide Double Taper Kit performed superiorly in both effectiveness and efficiency, followed by PD-25-1.1 Drill. Hi-Rem post showed the best retrieving results among other FPs. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Knowing the best technique and tools for post removal could spare the practitioner any unwanted complications during post removal. Resonance-enhanced emission (REE) effect was discovered and lead to a novel dye family of hydrostyryl pyridinium derivatives in our recent work. Herein, the REE effect was employed to design a red and near-infrared dual-state emissive fluorophore family of SW-OH-NO2 derivatives which were easily synthesized by coupling an electron-withdrawing group (W) onto nitro(hydroxyl)styryl (S-OH-NO2 ) through a C=C double bond as π-bridge. The deprotonation of a phenolic hydroxyl group promoted by a nitro group and the electron-withdrawing group (W) on the other side of the π-bridge triggered resonance, resulting in significantly red-shifted emission. All the resultant SW-OH-NO2 compounds showed excellent dual-state emission behavior. Remarkably, hydrostyryl quinolinium (SQ-OH-NO2 ) is one of the smallest NIR emitter molecular skeleton (λem =725 nm, MW<400) and showed dual-state emission characteristics and obvious viscosity-depended fluorescent behaviors. In addition to constructing electron donor-acceptor structures and prolonging π-bridges, the REE effect promises a reliable strategy toward novel fluorophores with small size, long emissive wavelength, and dual-emission characteristics, and importantly, feasible industrial manufactures and applications due to their easy and low-cost synthesis strategy.

Glucose serves as a pivotal biomarker crucial for the monitoring and diagnosis of a spectrum of medical conditions, encompassing hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, and diabetes, all of which may precipitate severe clinical manifestations in individuals. As a result, there is a growing demand within the medical domain for the development of rapid, cost-effective, and user-friendly diagnostic tools. In this research article, we introduce an innovative glucose sensor that relies on microfluidic devices meticulously crafted from disposable, medical-grade tapes. These devices incorporate glucose urine analysis strips securely affixed to microscope glass slides. The microfluidic channels are intricately created through laser cutting, representing a departure from traditional cleanroom techniques. This approach streamlines production processes, enhances cost-efficiency, and obviates the need for specialized equipment. Subsequent to the absorption of the target solution, the disposable device is enclosed within a 3D-printed housing. Image capture is seamlessly facilitated through the use of a smartphone camera for subsequent colorimetric analysis. Our study adeptly demonstrates the glucose sensor's capability to accurately quantify glucose concentrations within sucrose solutions. This is achieved by employing an exponential regression model, elucidating the intricate relationship between glucose concentrations and average RGB (Red-Green-Blue) values. Furthermore, our comprehensive analysis reveals minimal variation in sensor performance across different instances. Significantly, this study underscores the potential adaptability and versatility of our solution for a wide array of assay types and smartphone-based sensor systems, making it particularly promising for deployment in resource-constrained settings and undeveloped countries. The robust correlation established between glucose concentrations and average RGB values, substantiated by an impressive R-square value of 0.98709, underscores the effectiveness and reliability of our pioneering approach within the medical field.

Aiming to obtain hybrid magneto-plasmonic nanostructures, we have developed multisegmented and core/shell structured Fe-Au nanorods using template assisted electrochemical deposition. A facile method of tuning the growth pattern of multisegmented nanorods into core/shell structured is demonstrated. With a precise control of current density and deposition time, a brick-stacked wire like growth led to the formation of hollow nanotubes that could be further tuned to multilayered hollow nanotubes and core/shell structured nanorods. TEM imaging and STEM-EELS technique were used to explore the morphology, microstructure and the distribution of Au and Fe in the nanorods. The easy magnetization direction was found to be perpendicular to the nanorods' growth direction in the segmented nanorods. On the other hand, core/shell nanorods exhibited isotropic behavior. Our findings provide deeper insights into the fabrication of hybrid nanorods and the opportunity to tune the fabrication method to vary their morphology accordingly. Such studies will benefit design of hybrid nanorods with specific morphologies and physical properties and hence their integration into sensing, spintronics and other potential biomedical and technological applications.

OBJECTIVE: Rural communities experience a significant asthma burden. We pilot tested the implementation of Easy Breathing, a decision support program for improving primary care provider adherence to asthma guidelines in a rural community, and characterized asthma risk factors for enrollees. METHODS: We implemented Easy Breathing in two rural primary care practices for two years. Patient demographics, exposure histories, asthma severity, asthma medications, and treatment plans were collected. Providers' adherence to guidelines included the frequency of children with persistent asthma who were prescribed guidelines-based therapy and the frequency of children with a written asthma treatment plan on file. Clinicians provided feedback on the feasibility and acceptability of Easy Breathing using a validated survey tool and through semi-structured interviews. RESULTS: Two providers implemented the program. Enrollment included 518 children, of whom 135 (26%) had physician-confirmed asthma. After enrollment into Easy Breathing, 75% of children with asthma received a written asthma treatment plan All children with persistent asthma were prescribed an anti-inflammatory drug as part of their treatment plan. Providers (n = 2) rated Easy breathing as highly acceptable (M = 4.5), feasible (M = 4.5), and appropriate (M = 4.5). Qualitative feedback was positive, with suggestions to integrate the paper-based program into the electronic health record system for broader uptake. Enrollees with asthma were more likely to have a family history of asthma and endorse exposure to tobacco smoke and cockroaches. CONCLUSIONS: Easy Breathing shows promise as a decision support system that can be implemented in rural, medically underserved communities via primary care.

PURPOSE: Self-Reporting using traditional text-based Quality-of-Life (QoL) instruments can be difficult for people living with sensory impairments, communication challenges or changes to their cognitive capacity. Adapted communication techniques, such as Easy-Read techniques, or use of pictures could remove barriers to participation for a wide range of people. This review aimed to identify published studies reporting adapted communication approaches for measuring QoL, the methodology used in their development and validation among adult populations. METHODS: A scoping review of the literature using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) extension for scoping reviews checklist was undertaken. RESULTS: The initial search strategy identified 13,275 articles for screening, with 264 articles identified for full text review. Of these 243 articles were excluded resulting in 21 studies for inclusion. The majority focused on the development of an instrument (12 studies) or a combination of development with some aspect of validation or psychometric testing (7 studies). Nineteen different instruments were identified by the review, thirteen were developed from previously developed generic or condition-specific quality of life instruments, predominantly aphasia (7 studies) and disability (4 studies). Most modified instruments included adaptations to both the original questions, as well as the response categories. CONCLUSIONS: Studies identified in this scoping review demonstrate that several methods have been successfully applied e.g. with people living with aphasia post-stroke and people living with a disability, which potentially could be adapted for application with more diverse populations. A cohesive and interdisciplinary approach to the development and validation of communication accessible versions of QOL instruments, is needed to support widespread application, thereby reducing reliance on proxy assessors and promoting self-assessment of QOL across multiple consumer groups and sectors.

Quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe extraction strategies are becoming increasingly adopted in various analytical fields to determine drugs in biological specimens. In the present study, we developed two fully automated quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe extraction methods based on acetonitrile salting-out assisted liquid-liquid extraction (method 1) and acetonitrile salting-out assisted liquid-liquid extraction followed by dispersive solid-phase extraction (method 2) using a commercially available automated liquid-liquid extraction system. We applied these methods to the extraction of 14 psychotropic drugs (11 benzodiazepines and carbamazepine, quetiapine, and zolpidem) from whole blood samples. Both methods prior to liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis exhibited high linearity of calibration curves (correlation coefficients, > 0.9997), ppt level detection sensitivities, and satisfactory precisions (< 8.6% relative standard deviation), accuracies (within ± 16% relative error), and matrix effects (81-111%). Method 1 provided higher recovery rates (80-91%) than method 2 (72-86%), whereas method 2 provided higher detection sensitivities (limits of detection, 0.003-0.094 ng/mL) than method 1 (0.025-0.47 ng/mL) owing to the effectiveness of its dispersive solid-phase extraction cleanup step. These fully automated extraction methods realize reliable, labor-saving, user-friendly, and hygienic extraction of target analytes from whole blood samples.
