OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether the association between SJLsc (sleep-corrected social jetlag) and depressive mood is significant and independent of sleep debt. METHODS: Participants from the general adult population were interviewed using structured questionnaires on sleep duration, weekday/weekend sleep schedules, and depressive mood (Patient Health Questionnaire-9). Social jetlag (SJL) was measured by SJLsc and standard SJL (SJLs). SJLs was the absolute difference between mid-sleep time on free days (MSF) and workdays (MSW). For SJLsc, both MSF and MSW were adjusted for average sleep duration across the week according to the direction of sleep debt. Sleep debt was defined by sleep extension on free days. The association of SJL with depression was investigated, and covariates included age, sex, sociodemographic factors, insomnia symptoms, sleep duration, and sleep debt. RESULTS: A total of 1982 individuals (1089 men; age 43.1 ± 14.4 years) were analyzed. SJL was present in 24.6% measured by SJLsc and 51.0% by SJLs. SJLsc and SJLs were significantly associated with depressive mood (r = 0.06, P = 0.02; r = 0.06, P = 0.01, respectively), independent of sleep debt. Sleep debt was also associated with depression (r = 0.07, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: By adopting sleep-corrected formula for SJL, this study found that misaligned and insufficient sleep, at levels occurring in routine social life, can negatively affect mood. Minimizing social jetlag and sleep deprivation may promote individual psychological well-being.

Sleep behaviour is an important contributing factor in healthy human ageing and cognitive function. Previous studies have linked sleep deficiency with cognitive decline in older adults. However, there is need for more prospective investigations that focus on specific domains of cognitive function. The present study analysed cross-sectional and prospective associations between self-reported sleep and cognitive function in the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) study. Weekday and weekend sleep duration and habitual sleep quality were obtained via questionnaire data. Brief Test of Adult Cognition by Telephone was conducted to assess overall cognitive function, as well as episodic memory and executive function. We found significant trend for both long weekday and weekend sleep (>8 hr) and lower episodic memory scores in the overall sample. Sex-specific cross-sectional analysis demonstrated men with longer weekend sleep duration have lower overall cognitive function scores, and a negative association between weekend sleep and episodic memory scores. Women demonstrated a positive association between weekend sleep duration and executive function scores. There was no prospective significance for overall or sex-specific analysis. Our present results suggest that sleep duration may contribute to cognitive function, and future studies should include objective sleep measurements and focus on the potential cognitive benefits of improving sleep to further elucidate this association.

To aim is investigate whether demographic, polysomnographic or sleep behaviour data differ between non-sleepy, sleepy and very sleepy patients with mild obstructive sleep apnea. The study population consisted of 439 consecutive adult patients diagnosed with mild obstructive sleep apnea (5 ≤ apnea-hypopnea index < 15) after a complete polysomnographic evaluation. The patients were divided into three groups based on subjective sleepiness: very sleepy (Epworth Sleepiness Scale ≥ 16, n = 59); sleepy (10 < Epworth Sleepiness Scale < 16, n = 102); and non-sleepy (Epworth Sleepiness Scale ≤ 10, n = 278). Demographic, polysomnographic and sleep behaviour data were compared between the groups. There were no statistically significant differences in breathing abnormality indices and most of the demographic features between the groups. The number of arousals was significantly higher in the very sleepy group compared with the non-sleepy group (140.8 ± 105.2 versus 107.6 ± 72.2). Very sleepy patients reported feeling sleepy during the daytime more often (42.4% versus 31.7%) and sleeping significantly less during the week compared with non-sleepy patients. Also, a significantly higher proportion of sleepy (47.1%) and very sleepy patients (44.1%) reported taking naps during weekends compared with non-sleepy patients (35.6%). In a regression analysis, also total sleep time (ß = 0.045), sleep efficiency (ß = -0.160), apnea index (ß = -0.397), apnea-hypopnea index in supine position (ß = 0.044), periodic limb movement index (ß = 0.196) and periodic limb movement-related arousal index (ß = -0.210) affected subjective daytime sleepiness. The results suggest that excessive daytime sleepiness in patients with mild obstructive sleep apnea appears to be related to inadequate sleeping habits (i.e. insufficient sleep during working days) and decreased sleep quality rather than differences in breathing abnormalities.

BACKGROUND: There is growing concern that screen time and media use in school-age children can negatively affect children's sleep. These negative effects are explained by three main underlying mechanisms: reduced sleep, time allocated for more media consumption; increased mental, emotional, or psychological stimulation by media content; and the effects of light emitted by digital devices on circadian rhythms and sleep physiology and arousal. In this study, we focused not only on sleep duration, but also on sleep problems. We conducted a large-scale survey to examine the relationship between excessive use of digital devices, Internet addictive behaviour, sleep duration, and sleep problems. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of children enrolled in 20 public primary schools in Nagoya City, Japan. Children's parents/guardians completed a questionnaire including the brief sleep questionnaire for Japanese children which is a shortened version of the 'Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire'. Logistic regression analyses were used to identify associations between sleep problems and grade, sex, weekday sleep time, weekend sleep time, ownership of digital devices, frequent checking of digital devices, use of digital devices for more than 4 hours per day, and Internet addiction. RESULTS: In total, 8172 responses were received (91.6% response rate). After excluding incomplete responses, we analysed complete datasets for 6893 children with a mean age of 9.0 years. When adjusted for sex, grade, sleep duration on weekdays, and sleep duration on weekends, failure to control (odds ratio [OR] = 1.48; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.29-1.70; p < .001), more use than intended (OR = 1.27; 95% CI: 1.12-1.44; p < .001), and use to escape a dysphoric mood (OR = 1.30; 95% CI: 1.03-1.64; p = .027) were associated with children's sleep problems. A shorter weekday and a longer weekend sleep duration indicated a higher likelihood of sleep problems. CONCLUSIONS: After adjusting for sleep duration, a relationship was found between the three Internet addictive behaviours and sleep problems, but not ownership of digital devices. Parents and teachers may need to address screen media-related sleep problems in children, as these problems may be influenced by psychological factors.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Attempting to recover a sleep debt by extending sleep over the weekend is a common compensatory behavior in the population and is recommended by sleep-focused organizations. However, the purported benefits of catch-up sleep are based on a limited number of cross-sectional studies that relied on self-reported sleep. The objective of this study was to examine the association between accelerometer-derived weekend catch-up sleep and mortality and incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) in adults. METHODS: A prospective cohort study of UK adults who wore wrist-attached accelerometers was conducted. Weekend catch-up sleep was defined as a longer average sleep duration on weekends compared to weekdays. Participants were categorized into four groups: no weekend catch-up sleep (reference); >0 to <1 hour; ≥1 to <2 hours; and ≥2 hours difference. Associations between weekend catch-up sleep and mortality and incident CVD were assessed using Cox proportional hazards regression, adjusted for potential confounders. RESULTS: A total of 73,513 participants (sample for mortality) and 70,518 participants (sample for CVD incidence) were included, with an average (SD) follow-up period of 8.0 (0.9) years. In multivariable-adjusted models, weekend catch-up sleep was not associated with mortality (≥2 hours group: hazard ratio [HR], 1.17 [95% CI, 0.97-1.41]) or incident CVD (HR, 1.05 [95% CI, 0.94-1.18]). Dose-response analyses treating catch-up sleep as a continuous measure or analyses restricted to adults sleeping less than 6 hours on weekdays at baseline were in agreement with these findings. CONCLUSION: Weekend catch-up sleep was not associated with mortality or CVD incidence. These findings do not align with previous evidence and recommendations by sleep authorities suggesting that extending sleep over the weekend may offer protective health benefits.

Objective: Weekend sleep duration is linked to health issues, including mortality. However, how weekend sleep duration can impact chronic kidney disease (CKD) still needs to be understood. Therefore, we aimed to analyze how weekend sleep duration is associated with kidney function. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. Data were obtained from the 2017-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. We included 5362 study participants and categorized them into nine subgroups by sleep duration (short: ≤6 hours, normal: 6-9 hours, and long: ≥9 hours) on weekdays and weekends and analyzed for the respective association with renal function using stratified multivariable linear regression. Results: Weekend sleep duration for 9 hours or more was associated with decreasing estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) levels by 2.8 to 6.4 mL/min/1.73 m2 among people with long to short weekday sleep duration compared with short weekday and weekend sleep durations (control group) after adjusting for demographic characteristics, body measurement, sleep quality, smoking, and comorbidities. The study population with short weekday sleep duration (sWK) and long weekend sleep duration (lWD) had the most significant decline in eGFR. For the study population with sWK, eGFR level significantly decreased by 1.1 mL/min/1.73 m2 as sleep duration on weekends increased by one hour. Conclusion: The underlying mediators of lWD and CKD could be the dysregulation of human behaviors, metabolism, or biological functions. Longer weekend sleep duration was linked to a decrease in eGFR levels. It warrants further study to clarify the mediators.

OBJECTIVES: An accurate assessment of sleep duration is important in that it can be one of the indicators of a country's overall health and well-being. The global trend in sleep duration is controversial according to study types. We investigated trends in sleep duration in South Korea with a time diary method. METHODS: Data from the Korean Time Use Survey (KTUS) in 2004, 2009, 2014, and 2019, were analyzed. The KTUS is a nationwide, cross-sectional survey that measures daily time use patterns of individuals and has been performed every five years by Statistics Korea. For this survey, all participants were asked to record their activities for 2 continuous days in 10-min intervals. RESULTS: Among the 168,682 people who completed the survey in 2004 through 2019, the final analytical sample consisted of 91,998 individuals. Over 15 years, the sleep duration of the Korean population increased from 411.1 min (SD 22.5) in 2004 to 434.5 min (SD 26.1) in 2019 (p for trend <0.001). This increase was observed for all age groups. Over the study period, while bedtime showed no significant change, wake time was generally delayed for all age groups. The increase in sleep duration in the Korean population was largely due to catch-up sleep on Saturdays, which was substantially prolonged with belated wake times. CONCLUSION: Our nationwide time use survey data showed that sleep duration in South Korea has increased over the past 15 years but still has room for improvement in terms of weekday sleep duration.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Country or regional differences in sleep duration are well-known, but few large-scale studies have specifically evaluated sleep variability, either across the work week, or in terms of differences in weekday and weekend sleep. METHODS: Sleep measures, obtained over 50 million night's sleep from ∼220,000 wearable device users in 35 countries, were analysed. Each person contributed an average of ∼242 nights of data. Multiple regression was used to assess the impact country of residence had on sleep duration, timing, efficiency, weekday sleep variability, weekend sleep extension and social jetlag. RESULTS: Nocturnal sleep was shorter and had a later onset in Asia than other regions. Despite this, sleep efficiency was lower and weekday sleep variability was higher. Weekend sleep extension was longer in Europe and the USA than in Asia, and was only partially related to weekday sleep duration. There were also cross-country differences in social jetlag although the regional differences were less distinct than for weekend sleep extension. CONCLUSIONS: In addition to regional differences in sleep duration, cross-country differences in sleep variability and weekend sleep extension suggest that using the latter as an indicator of sleep debt may need to be reconsidered. In countries exhibiting both short sleep and high weekday sleep variability, a culturally different means of coping with inadequate sleep is likely. Country or region differences in culture, particularly those related to work, merit closer examination as factors influencing the variability in normative sleep patterns around the world.

The sleep difference between weekdays and weekends can lead to negative physical and mental health outcomes in adolescents. Thus, this study has attempted to analyze the impact of sleep time differences on various health outcomes, using nationally representative panel data. Data from the junior high school student panel of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey were analyzed. The sleep difference was defined as the difference between the average sleep duration on weekdays and that on weekends in minutes. A series of mixed effect linear regression models for continuous variables or mixed effect logit regression for binary variables was utilized. Korean adolescent students reported from 96.8 min to 133.2 min of sleep duration difference between weekdays and weekends. After controlling for gender, parent work status, and type of housing, the weekday-to-weekend sleep differences were associated with various health-related outcomes including concentration difficulty, aggression, somatic symptoms, and withdrawal. Additionally, adolescent student life satisfaction was associated with sleep difference. The sleep differences among adolescent students were more associated with mental health-related outcomes and emotional symptoms than with physical health-related outcomes. The appropriate intervention to reduce the sleep difference gap is an important key to improve health in the adolescence period.

The relationship between gaming and sleep is mostly informed by studies of addictive gaming behavior, thus limiting our understanding of sleep in the context of nonproblematic engaged gaming. The present study investigated whether addicted, problem, and engaged gaming behavior was associated with sleep duration, social jetlag, and difficulties falling asleep. The sample consisted of 13- and 16-year-old Norwegian adolescents (n = 3228) participating in the Health Behavior in School-Aged Children (HBSC) survey in 2018. Participants were categorized into addicted, problem, engaged, and normal/non-gaming behavior groups according to which GAS-7 criteria they fulfilled. Robust generalized linear mixed models with a random intercept for class ID were used to examine the association between the sleep variables and gaming behavior. Addicted gaming behavior was unfavorably associated with all sleep parameters. The findings for engaged gaming and problem gaming behavior were somewhat mixed. Engaged gamers slept less on weekends, less on weekdays for those aged 16, and experienced greater social jetlag compared to the normal/non-gaming group. Problem gamers experienced greater social jetlag and had higher odds of experiencing difficulties falling asleep. Overall, the results suggest that all types of gaming behaviors might harm sleep health, but to a greater extent for the addicted gamers.

Sleep duration has important implications for children's participation in daily activities; however, past attempts to examine this relationship has been limited to specific types of physical or educational activities. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between sleep duration and participation in various daily activities among school-aged children. A school-based sample of 391 children aged 5-12 years (boys: 52.4%) participated in this cross-sectional survey. Sleep duration was quantified using parental reports of their children's bedtime and wake-up time on weekdays and weekends. The parent-reported Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth was used to measure their children's participation frequency and involvement in 25 home, school, and community activities. The results of hierarchical regression analyses showed that, when the demographic variables were controlled for, weekday sleep duration was positively related to homework involvement and negatively related to the frequency of TV viewing; however, it was unrelated to participation in school and community activities. Conversely, weekend sleep duration was positively related to overall participation in school activities, and participation frequency and involvement in some home and community activities. Furthermore, sleep duration was approximately an hour shorter on weekdays than on weekends. These results suggest that weekend sleep duration has stronger positive implications for children's participation in daily activities than does weekday sleep duration. Interventions aiming to promote children's activity participation may either prolong children's weekend sleep duration or address their shorter weekday sleep duration.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to (1) provide data on normal sleep patterns in Chinese preschool children, (2) identify cross-cultural differences of sleep patterns among children from China and other countries, (3) estimate the prevalence of sleep duration not meeting the optimal amount, and (4) characterize delayed weekend sleep pattern. METHODS: A population-based sample of 1,610 children aged 3-6 years was recruited from 10 cities across China. Parents completed questions about their child's sleep patterns adapted from the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ). RESULTS: The mean bedtime was 9:31 PM, wake time was 7:27 AM, nighttime sleep duration was 9 hours 30 minutes, daytime sleep duration was 1 hour 31 minutes, and total sleep duration was 11 hours 2 minutes. The children had a shorter nighttime sleep duration but longer daytime naps, resulting in no differences in total sleep duration compared with counterparts predominantly in the west. Of the children, 85.3% met the recommended amount of sleep of 10 to 13 hours, and 10.8% slept fewer than 10 hours. The prevalence of sleep less than 10 hours was higher in older children and children from eastern China. Children went to bed and woke up more than 30 minutes later on weekends than weekdays, accounting for 40.1% and 50%, respectively. Children in western China showed longer delay than children in eastern China (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: Age- and region-specific variability of sleep patterns are reported as well as insufficient sleep and delayed weekend sleep pattern in Chinese preschool children. The cross-cultural difference of sleep patterns was in temporal placement rather than sleep duration.
