RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The proper nutrition in diabetes is one of the crucial elements of therapy, but in practice, diet of diabetic individuals is commonly improperly balanced, that is associated with lack of nutritional knowledge. The nurses are also often characterized by insufficient knowledge about diabetes diet therapy and poor nutritional behaviors. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to analyze of the declared nutritional behaviors in a group of diabetology nurses and to compare it with declared nutritional behaviors of the control group. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The group of 52 nurses recruited from all the regions of Poland working with diabetic patients was analysed and compared with control group of 63 individuals - random non-diabetic patients from all the regions of Poland. They were asked about accomplishing practical recommended nutritional goals for adults in Poland and were able to indicate if they follow detailed recommended nutritional goals "always" (3 points), "sometimes" (1 point) or "never" (0 points). RESULTS: The diabetology nurses rarely declared fish and legumes intake (never or sometimes accomplishing goal: 87%), milk and dairy products intake (75%), as well as moderate sugar and sweets intake (69%). Nurses significantly rarer than control group declared regularity of meals (p=0.0000) and diversion of meals (p=0.0000). The lack of correlation between number of years of working with diabetic individuals and number of obtained points during assessment of nutritional behaviors was observed. CONCLUSIONS: The nutritional behaviors of diabetology nurses are not good, even if they educate diabetic patients on daily basis. Nutritional education should be conducted not only in groups of diabetic patients, but also, in groups of diabetology nurses.

RESUMEN

Self-management (SM) behaviors reduce disease burden from advancing diabetic kidney disease. From a parent study about patients' transition experience to SM, this study report presents coping resources that support SM and barriers from two focus group interviews (n = 6). Ethnographic analysis identified two patterns: (a) mental health self-management characterized by coping, and (b) relational self-management characterized by social support. Practice implications include focused assessment of perceived social support and social network, dating advisement, and workplace management. Future study considerations include inquiry about diabetes and dating relationships and workplace resources for SM support.

RESUMEN

The provision of adequate energy and nutrients in the woman with DM is essential for normal fetal growth. However, dietary modifications including exercise are essential to normalise blood glycaemic levels and prevent adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, the evidence surrounding the nutritional management in GDM has been controversial. Dornhorst and Frost (2002) state that not only are there conflicting guidelines on nutritional management but disagreement as to the effectiveness of this on pregnancy outcomes. NICE (2008) has issued guidelines on the management of DM before, during and after pregnancy. Dietary prescriptions should include personal preference, body weight and type and level of exercise, blood glucose levels, ketone levels and any medications taken for the DM. Midwives must empower women to manage their condition through making appropriate and acceptable choices for their health and that of their baby.

RESUMEN

Carbohydrates are an important part of a healthful diet. With type 1 or 2 diabetes, balancing insulin or medication with carbs and emphasizing carbs from fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat milk and yogurt is key. Families should learn how to follow a consistent carb meal plan or adjust insulin for carbs to help keep their child's blood glucose close to target levels. The family's RD or healthcare team can help them decide which meal planning method is best for their child.

RESUMEN

Dietary management is an important part of the care of people with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. This article examines the latest thinking on diet, including use of the plate model, based on recommended percentages of foods from the five food groups, and dispels some common myths about food and diabetes.

RESUMEN

As the incidence of diabetes increases in the UK, community nurses will have increasingly larger caseloads of elderly patients with diabetes. It is important that nurses assess the patient's understanding of the disease and its treatment. The aim of good diabetic control is to reduce morbidity from the complications of the disease. Factors that affect the patients' quality of life; the patients' ability to manage their condition; and the importance of providing education and support for both the patients and their carers are discussed. The importance of diet, blood glucose monitoring and taking diabetic medication appropriately are explained.

RESUMEN

Fasting for Ramadhan is one of the five Pillars of Islam and is very important to Muslims. Nurses can help patients with diabetes to fast successfully by means of a pre-fast assessment, careful medicine management and good patient education.

RESUMEN

UNLABELLED: The research-question, posed in this study, was: How does diabetes type 2 change the quality of life of the persons involved and how can this be influenced? As these perceptions are subjective a qualitative approach was chosen. The interpretations of the persons involved were collected by using both a focus group discussion and individual interviews. CONCLUSION: The quality of life of the persons with diabetes type 2 questioned in this study, was altered especially in the functional health area. The concepts named here, were house-keeping, nutrition and mobility. But also the area of spare-time-management with concepts as hobbies and holidays, as well as the area of control with the concept of self-control, were named as being compromised by the illness. Information was recognized as a very important influencing factor. Information can positively influence the strength of the impact of diabetes type 2 on the quality of life.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether Asian Pacific Islanders with type 2 diabetes who have better knowledge and self-management would have better baseline hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and total cholesterol values. Signicant relationships were found among (a) general diet on HbA1c (p < .030), (b) medications on HbA1c (< .009), and (c) diabetes knowledge on HbA1c (p < .001). Participants with active self-management regimens were expected to demonstrate better laboratory values than those who did not implement self-management. However, persons with knowledge may for other reasons still lack self-management. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Future studies comparing baseline results to post-additional education sessions may yield better comparisons.
