RESUMO
OBJECTIVE: The present study sought to assess the prevalence and determinants of tobacco use (cigarette smoking and shisha use) and khat chewing among Yemeni adolescents, and to evaluate their knowledge and attitudes toward these habits. METHODS: This school-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 13 to 19-year-old students attending middle/high schools (both private and public) across five main cities in Yemen. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires comprising questions/items related to sociodemographic data, cigarette smoking, shisha use, khat chewing, and knowledge on and attitudes toward these habits. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were used to explore the most determinant factors. RESULTS: A total of 7505 students were recruited from 42 schools across five major cities in Yemen. The prevalence rates of khat chewing, cigarette smoking, and shisha use were 42.4%, 6.8%, and 19.3%, respectively. Compared to females, male subjects reported significantly higher prevalence of khat chewing (51.4% vs. 23.5%, p < 0.001), shisha use (20.3% vs. 17.2%, p < 0.01), and cigarette smoking (8.8% vs. 2.6%, p < 0.001). Male gender, older age, poor knowledge, khat chewing, parents' low education level, and parents' and peers' smoking habits were significant determinants of adolescents' cigarette smoking status. Private education, male gender, older age, poor knowledge, parents' low education level, and parents' and peers' khat chewing habits were significant determinants of adolescents' khat chewing status. The participant's knowledge of and attitudes toward tobacco use and khat chewing were inadequate. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of khat chewing, shisha use, and to lesser extent cigarette smoking among Yemeni adolescents is high that needs immediate intervention. The results highlight the urgent need to implement prevention strategies to tackle these habits among the youth in Yemen.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Ageism represents an important barrier to high-quality healthcare for older adults. The present study sought to translate and validate the Arabic version of the Ageism Scale for Dental Students (ASDS-Arabic). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The 27-item ASDS tool was translated from English into Arabic following recommended cross-sectional forward and backward translation guidelines. The translated version was subjected to the content validity ratio (CVR) and sent to dental students in 21 institutes from 10 different Arab countries. Principal components analysis (PCA) was used to assess the dimensionality of the scale, and Cronbach's alpha was used to determine internal consistency reliability. The discriminant validity of the scale was assessed using the independent t-test. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was also undertaken. RESULTS: Based on CVR, three items were removed. The 24-item Arabic version was completed by 3284 dental students. PCA and CFA retained 17 items in six components, explaining 50.3% of the total variance, with acceptable reliability, validity and discrimination. The first component "Adherence of older patients with dental treatment and instructions," included four items with a Cronbach α of 0.64 and scored 4.3 ± 0.8. The second component "Feasibility of the treatment plan," included three items with a Cronbach α of 0.66 and scored from 2.6 ± 1.2 to 2.9 ± 1.1. The third component "Cost of and responsibility for the dental treatment" included four items with a Cronbach α of 0.47 and scored 4.4 ± 0.8 to 4.5 ± 0.8. The fourth component "Medical history of older patients" included two items with a Cronbach α of 0.70 and scored 4.0 ± 1.0 to 4.1 ± 1.0. The fifth Component "Feeling towards older patients" included two items with a Cronbach α of 0.672 and scored 2.6 ± 1.2 to 2.0 ± 1.4. The sixth Component "Confidence and experience in treating older patients" included two items with a Cronbach α of 0.33 and scored 4.4 ± 1 to 4.6 ± 1. CONCLUSION: This preliminary validation of the ASDS-Ar resulted in a new 17-item scale with six components with acceptable validity, reliability and discrimination.
RESUMO
BACKGROUND: The present systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the available evidence about the adherence of Candida Albicans to the digitally-fabricated acrylic resins (both milled and 3D-printed) compared to the conventional heat-polymerized acrylic resins. METHODS: This study followed the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analyses (PRISMA). A comprehensive search of online databases/search tools (Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, Ovid, and Google Scholar) was conducted for all relevant studies published up until May 29, 2023. Only in-vitro studies comparing the adherence of Candida albicans to the digital and conventional acrylic resins were included. The quantitative analyses were performed using RevMan v5.3 software. RESULTS: Fourteen studies were included, 11 of which were meta-analyzed based on Colony Forming Unit (CFU) and Optical Density (OD) outcome measures. The pooled data revealed significantly lower candida colonization on the milled digitally-fabricated compared to the heat-polymerized conventionally-fabricated acrylic resin materials (MD = - 0.36; 95%CI = - 0.69, - 0.03; P = 0.03 and MD = - 0.04; 95%CI = - 0.06, - 0.01; P = 0.0008; as measured by CFU and OD respectively). However, no differences were found in the adhesion of Candida albicans between the 3D-printed digitally-fabricated compared to the heat-polymerized conventionally-fabricated acrylic resin materials (CFU: P = 0.11, and OD: P = 0.20). CONCLUSION: The available evidence suggests that candida is less likely to adhere to the milled digitally-fabricated acrylic resins compared to the conventional ones.

BACKGROUND: The present network meta-analysis aims to answer the question "what is the best topical intervention for the treatment of recurrent aphthous stomatitis that can provide an acceptable pain relief and promote wound healing?" METHODS: From inception to October 2022, PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure were searched to identify all potentially eligible randomized controlled trials. The primary outcomes were pain scores and/or healing time, while the secondary outcomes were the associated side effects. The Bayesian network meta-analysis accompanied by a random effect model and 95% credible intervals were calculated. RESULTS: Forty-three randomized controlled trials with a total of 3067 participants, comparing 20 different topical medications, were included. Concerning pain reduction, the network meta-analysis failed to show any statistically significant differences when different topical treatments were compared together or even with a placebo at different time intervals. Except for doxycycline, which showed a statistically significant difference in terms of accelerating healing time, other topical interventions showed no statistically significant differences when compared with placebo or with each other. CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of the current network meta-analysis, it seems that: A low to moderate quality of evidence showed no superiority of any topical treatment over others concerning pain reduction, although rank probability tests revealed sucralfate, doxycycline, hyaluronic acid, and chamomile as the most efficacious treatment options at different evaluation times. Hence, further well-designed clinical trials with larger sample sizes are warranted. Topical doxycycline was shown to be the most efficacious intervention in promoting healing of recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the available evidence regarding the incidence and severity of white spot lesions (WSLs), plaque accumulation and salivary caries-associated bacteria(SCB) in clear aligners (CA) verses conventional fixed (CF) orthodontic appliances. METHODS: Electronic searches of MEDLINE, Scopus, Embase, Google Scholar, Clinical trial registry, OpenGrey and ProQuest were done for all relevant studies. Eligibility criteria were; Randomized Controlled Trials and Non-Randomized Studies that compared the incidence and severity of WSLs, plaque accumulation and SCB between CA and CF appliances in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment. The risk of bias(ROB) and certainty of evidence was assessed independently by two reviewers using Cochrane's ROB and GRADEpro, respectively. Standardized mean difference (SMD) was used to estimate the effect size using STATA 17 software. RESULTS: A total of 14 studies met the eligibility criteria, and eight were suitable for meta-analysis. The qualitative results showed lower incidence and severity of WSLs, plaque accumulation, and SCB in CA group compared to CF appliances. The pooled results showed significantly lower plaque accumulation(SMD - 1.58;95%CI:-2.57,0.58;p = 0.002) in CA compared to CF appliances. CONCLUSIONS: A moderate-quality evidence reveals less plaque accumulation and less SCB in CA, which might be related to the reduced incidence and severity of WSLs associated with CA when compared with CF appliances. However, the results of the present study should be interpreted with caution given the high ROB among some of the included studies as well as the marked heterogeneity across the studies. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: For patients who can be treated with either CA or CF appliances, CA may be a better choice concerning oral health. BACKGROUND: The "Knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP)" approach is crucial in health system. Appreciating the current KAP status will reveal the extent of the efficiency of applied health strategies, and subsequently help to determine the appropriate health policy to be employed for improving the health indicators of a given disease/condition, including Oral Cancer (OC). This large-scale cross-sectional study aimed to assess knowledge, attitude, and practice on OC among senior dental students in Yemen. METHODS: A pre-validated online questionnaire was used for data collection. It consisted of a series of close-ended questions on knowledge, attitudes and practices related to OC. Yemeni dental students in clinical levels (4th and 5th years) from nine dental schools based in four major cities were invited to complete the survey. The SPSS Version 28.0 was used for data analysis. Differences by different grouping factors were assessed by Chi-squared and Mann Whitney-U tests, as appropriate. RESULTS: A total of 927 students completed the questionnaire: a response rate of 43%. While the majority identified smoking (93.8%), and smokeless tobacco (92.1%) as potential risk factors of OC, only 76.2% recognized sun exposure as a risk factor for lip cancer and only 50% were aware of old age as a risk factor of OC. Regarding clinical signs of OC, 84.1% reported that OC can present as non-healing ulcer, but only two thirds of the participants recognized that OC can present as a white and/or red lesion. With respect to practices, although 92.1% reported asking their patients regarding oral habits, only 78% reported they regularly carry out a soft tissue examination. Only 54.5% of the participants considered themselves to be well-trained to provide smoking cessation advice, and 21% were confident regarding their knowledge on OC. The 5th year students showed significantly better knowledge and practices than the 4th year students did (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: The study suggests significant gaps in knowledge, attitudes, and practices of senior dental students in Yemen regarding OC. The findings also underscore the urgent need to improve OC teaching and training of undergraduate dental students, and to provide periodic well-structured continuing professional development activities for dental professionals.

BACKGROUND: A possible relationship between periodontitis (PD) and COVID-19 and its adverse outcomes has been suggested. Hence, the present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the available evidence regarding the potential association between periodontitis (PD) and COVID-19 and its adverse outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were searched for relevant studies published up to April 15th, 2023. Studies that evaluated the association between PD and COVID-19 were included. Risk of bias was evaluated by two reviewers, and meta-analyses were performed using RevMan 5.3 software. RESULTS: A total of 22 studies involving 92,535 patients from USA, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and South America were included; of these, 12 were pooled into the meta-analysis. Most of the studies (19 studies) reported a significant association between PD and COVID-19. The pooled data found a significant association between PD and COVID-19 outcomes: more severe symptoms (OR = 6.95, P = 0.0008), ICU admissions (OR = 3.15, P = 0.0001), and mortality (OR = 1.92, P = 0.21). Additionally, compared to mild PD, severe PD was significantly associated with higher risks of severe COVID-19 outcomes: severe symptoms (P = 0.02); ICU admission (P = 0.0001); and higher mortality rates (P = 0.0001). The results also revealed 58% higher risk for COVID-19 infection in patients with PD (P = 0.00001). CONCLUSIONS: The present findings suggest a possible association between poor periodontal health and the risk of poor COVID-19 outcomes. However, owing to the observed methodological heterogeneity across the included studies, further prospective cohort studies with standardized methodologies are warranted to further unravel the potential association between periodontal disease and COVID-19 and its adverse outcomes.

PURPOSE: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to summarize available evidence regarding the effect of horizontal glass fiber posts (HGFPs) on fracture strength and fracture pattern of endodontically treated teeth (ETT) compared to controls without HGFP. The review protocol was registered on the OSF registries. METHODS: Literature searches were conducted in MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, Google Scholar, and ProQuest for all relevant studies published up to February 2022. All in vitro studies that assessed the influence of HGFPs on fracture strength and fracture pattern of ETT whether mesio-occluso-distal or mesio-occlusal or DO cavities were considered eligible. Review Manager (RevMan) was used for the meta-analysis. Subgroup and funnel plot analyses were also performed. Quality assessment was conducted by two independent reviewers. RESULTS: A total of 12 articles met the inclusion criteria, and 10 studies underwent quantitative evaluation. The pooled effect showed that fracture resistance of molar teeth restored with HGFP was significantly higher than teeth without HGFP (standardized mean difference [SMD]: 1.61, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.14, 3.09, p = 0.03), whereas marginally significant for premolars (SMD: 1.36, 95% CI: -0.00, 2.73, p = 0.05). Regarding fracture patterns, the presence of an HGFP significantly increased the occurrence of restorable fracture patterns for premolars (odds ratios [OR]: 4.15, 95% CI: 1.60, 10.82, p = 0.004) compared to controls, whereas the difference was not significant for molars (OR: 1.09, 95% CI: 0.43, 2.77, p = 0.85). Moderate risk of bias was identified in 9/12 studies; one study showed a high risk of bias and two studies showed a low risk of bias. CONCLUSIONS: Within the limitations of this study, there is evidence from in vitro studies that the use of HGFP increases the fracture resistance of the ETT when compared to teeth without HGFP and also reduces the occurrence of non-restorable fractures for premolars. However, well-conducted in vitro and prospective clinical studies are warranted to validate this finding.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of calcium hydroxide intracanal medicament on the push-out bond strength of resin-based and calcium silicate-based endodontic sealers. METHODS: A comprehensive search of was conducted for all relevant in-vitro studies. All randomized controlled in-vitro studies that evaluated the effect of calcium hydroxide on the push-out bond strength of resin-based or calcium silicate-based endodontic sealers were assessed. The variables of interest were extracted, and the risk of the included studies was evaluated. The standardized mean difference was calculated and the significance level was set at p value <0.05. RESULTS: A total of 26 studies were eligible for analysis. There were 45 independent comparison groups and 1009 recruited teeth. The pooled data showed no significant difference in push-out bond strength between calcium hydroxide and control group in the resin-based group (SMD = 0.03; 95% CI = -0.55, 0.60; p = 0.93), and calcium silicate-based group (SMD = 0.02; 95% CI = -0.31, 0.35; p = 0.90). Most of the studies (21 out of 26) were at medium risk of bias and five studies showed a low risk of bias. CONCLUSION: The available evidence suggests that calcium hydroxide used as intracanal medication does not influence the push-out bond strength of the resin- and calcium silicate-based endodontic sealers. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The results of this meta-analysis suggest that calcium hydroxide used as intracanal medication does not influence the push-out bond strength of resin-based and calcium silicate-based endodontic sealers.

BACKGROUND: This scoping review systematically summarized the available evidence about the efficacy of N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) as an intracanal antibacterial and/or anti-inflammatory. METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google scholar search engines/databases were searched up to February 2022 to retrieve relevant studies. The studies were evaluated for eligibility criteria, and identifying relevant studies. RESULTS: Out of 193 studies, 15 fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were processed for data extraction. Thirteen in vitro studies assessed antibacterial/antibiofilm efficacy of NAC, and reported good and promising efficacy: NAC was found as efficacious as the comparators (chlorhexidine, sodium hypochlorite, calcium hydroxide), or even showed higher efficacy. Regarding the anti-inflammatory efficacy of NAC, one in vitro study found it equivalent to, while one clinical trial revealed it more efficacious than calcium hydroxide. CONCLUSIONS: There is accumulating evidence on the anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory efficacy of NAC in context of endodontics. However, further clinical trials with robust methodology and objective and reliable clinical, biological and microbial outcomes are warranted to translate its use for clinical practice on humans.

OBJECTIVES: E-cigarette use has become popular, particularly among the youth. Its use is associated with harmful general and oral health consequences. This survey aimed to assess self-reported oral hygiene practices, oral and general health events, and changes in physiological functions (including physical status, smell, taste, breathing, appetite, etc.) due to E-cigarette use among dental students. METHODS: This online, multicounty survey involved undergraduate dental students from 20 dental schools across 11 different countries. The questionnaire included demographic characteristics, E-cigarette practices, self-reported complaints, and associated physiological changes due to E-cigarette smoking. Data were descriptively presented as frequencies and percentages. A Chi-square test was used to assess the potential associations between the study group and sub-groups with the different factors. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS at P < 0.05. RESULTS: Most respondents reported regular brushing of their teeth, whereas only 70% used additional oral hygiene aids. Reported frequencies of complaints ranged from as low as 3.3% for tongue inflammation to as high as 53.3% for headache, with significant differences between E-cigarette users and non-users. Compared to non-smokers, E-cigarette users reported significantly higher prevalence of dry mouth (33.1% vs. 23.4%; P < 0.001), black tongue (5.9% vs. 2.8%; P = 0.002), and heart palpitation (26.3%% vs. 22.8%; P = 0.001). Although two-thirds of the sample reported no change in their physiological functions, E-cigarette users reported significant improvement in their physiological functions compared to never smokers or tobacco users. CONCLUSION: Dental students showed good oral hygiene practices, but E-cigarette users showed a higher prevalence of health complications.

OBJECTIVE: Alveolar osteitis (commonly known as dry socket) is a very common painful complication of dental extraction with no definitive cure. This systematic review assessed the efficacy of laser therapy in the management of alveolar osteitis. METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Central, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) were searched for all studies published till July 2021 using relevant keywords. All clinical trials that assessed the efficacy of laser in the management of alveolar osteitis were included. Due to missing some numerical data and the substantial heterogeneity across the studies, no meta-analysis was performed. RESULTS: Out of the 296 identified articles, 14 clinical trials comprising 981 patients were included. The laser wavelengths, power output, and energy fluence showed a great variability across the included studies: 632.8 - 2940 nm, 16 mW - 10 W, and 0.2 - 85.7 J/cm2, respectively. All included studies found laser to be efficacious in alleviating pain and accelerating healing in patients with alveolar osteitis. Of the 14 included studies, 13 studies reported superior outcomes in favor of laser therapy as compared to conventional therapies. CONCLUSION: The available evidence suggests a good efficacy of laser therapy in reducing signs and symptoms of alveolar osteitis. However, owing to the marked methodological heterogeneity and the substantial variations in laser parameters among the included studies, more well-designed clinical trials with adequate sample sizes and standardized laser parameters are highly recommended. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Laser therapy can be applied for the management of dry socket.

OBJECTIVES: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a very common oral mucosal disease, and its management is quite challenging with no definitive cure being available so far. Many studies have tried hyaluronic acid (HA) for alleviating signs and symptoms of RAS. The present systematic review sought to assess the available evidence regarding the efficacy of HA in management of RAS. METHODS: Two reviewers independently conducted extensive search in four online databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar) and the gray literature, with no restriction to date or language of the publication. All clinical trials that assessed the efficacy of HA in reducing signs and symptoms of RAS were included. Risk of bias was assessed by two reviewers independently, using the Cochrane assessment tool. Due to substantial heterogeneity, no meta-analysis was feasible. RESULTS: Out of the 75 identified articles, nine clinical trials involving 538 RAS patients (259 in HA group) were included. The risk of bias was high in five studies, low in one study, and unclear in three studies. The comparative groups varied greatly across the included studies: triamcinolone (in three studies), chlorhexidine mouthwash, lidocaine, placebo, iodine glycerin, diclofenac, and laser therapy. Overall, the results revealed a good efficacy of HA in alleviating pain and shortening the healing time of RAS, without any reported side effects. Compared to triamcinolone, HA showed superior results in one study, and comparable results in two studies. CONCLUSIONS: The available evidence suggests that HA is a promising treatment option for RAS. However, given the huge heterogeneity of the included studies and high risk of bias in some of these studies, the evidence is inconclusive. Further well-designed clinical trials with standardized methodologies and adequate sample sizes are warranted to discern the efficacy of HA for RAS. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Hyaluronic acid might be a viable alternative therapeutic option for patients with RAS.

OBJECTIVES: A few studies have associated vitamin D deficiency with the occurrence of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). Hence, the aim of the present systematic review and meta-analysis is to explore such a potential association. METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases was conducted in June 2019. The inclusion criteria were (a) observational studies that assessed the relationship between vitamin D and RAS, and (b) the outcome measures reported quantitative vitamin D levels. Studies without control groups, case series, case reports, experimental studies, letter to editors, reviews, were excluded. The random effects model was conducted for meta-analyses using RevMan 5.3 software. RESULTS: Five studies comprising 208 RAS patients and 241 healthy individuals were included. All studies except one reported significantly lower levels of vitamin D in RAS patients compared with the healthy individuals. The results of the pooled 5 studies revealed statistically significant lower levels of vitamin D in RAS patients (Mean Difference (MD) = -9.67 ng/ml, 95% CI = -15.68, -3.65; p Ë .002). CONCLUSION: The present meta-analysis suggests a significant association between low vitamin D levels and RAS. Further well-designed studies with adequate sample sizes are required to elucidate the role of vitamin D in pathogenesis of RAS.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a highly prevalent oral mucosal disease. The management of RAS is quite challenging, and as yet, there is no definitive cure. The present systematic review and meta-analysis assessed the efficacy of a single application of topical doxycycline for the management of RAS. METHODS: A comprehensive online search of PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science databases was conducted to identify all relevant studies published up to March 31, 2019. All randomized clinical trials that assessed the efficacy of a single application of topical doxycycline in the management of RAS were included. Primary outcome measures were pain scores and/or healing time, while secondary outcomes included the associated side effects. RevMan 5.3 software was used for data analysis. RESULTS: Five clinical trials fulfilled the eligibility criteria, three of which were included in the meta-analysis. All of the included studies found doxycycline effective in alleviating signs and symptoms of RAS. The results of the pooled 3 studies revealed a statistically significant decrease in the healing time in favor of the doxycycline group as compared to the control groups (I2 = 51%; MD: -1.77, 95% CI: - 2.11, - 1.42, P <0.00001); however, the results showed no significant differences between doxycycline and control groups with regard to pain reduction (I2 = 96%; MD: -1.28, 95% CI: - 2.83, 0.27; P = 0.11). CONCLUSION: Although still inconclusive, the available evidence suggests that a single application of topical doxycycline might be effective for reducing signs and symptoms of RAS. However, owing to the limited number of the included studies, further well-designed clinical trials with adequate sample sizes are required to discern the clinical efficacy of topical doxycycline in patients with RAS.

The management of oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is quite challenging, and as yet, no effective therapy is available for its management. The present systematic review and meta-analysis sought to assess the effectiveness of aloe vera in alleviating pain and clinical signs of OSF. A comprehensive search in PubMed/Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science databases was conducted to identify the relevant randomized clinical trials. RevMan 5.3 software was used for data analysis. Six randomized controlled trials fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The results of meta-analysis showed statistically significant differences between aloe vera and control groups in alleviating pain/burning sensation at the end of the first and second month, in favor of aloe vera, but no significant differences were found at the end of the third month. With regard to objective clinical outcomes, no statistically significant differences were found between the groups. Aloe vera has a promising effect in reducing pain/burning sensation and clinical improvement in patients with OSF. However, owing to the marked heterogeneity of the included studies, conducting well-designed trials with long follow-up periods, standardized outcome measures and adequate sample sizes are warranted.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to systematically review the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in the management of symptomatic oral lichen planus (OLP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and ISI Web of knowledge were searched until July 2017, using the following keywords: OLP, erosive lichen planus, lichen planus, and PDT. RESULTS: Five clinical studies were included. The risk of bias was considered high in 4 studies and moderate in 1 study. The efficacy of PDT was compared with topical corticosteroids in all included studies. Laser wavelengths, duration of irradiation, and power density ranged between 420-660 nm, 30 seconds to 10 minutes, and 10-500 mW/cm2 , respectively. All studies reported PDT to be effective in the management of symptomatic OLP. Two studies reported PDT to be as effective as corticosteroids, 1 study reported a better efficacy of PDT compared to corticosteroids, whereas 2 studies found PDT to be inferior to corticosteroids. CONCLUSIONS: The limited available evidence suggests that PDT is an effective treatment option for the management of OLP. However, due to the limited number of studies included in this review and heterogeneity among these studies, more well-designed clinical trials with adequate sample sizes are highly warranted.

Recurrent herpes labialis (RHL) is a highly prevalent viral infection that affects the oro-facial region. Current treatment options have limited efficacy in reducing healing time and recurrence rate of the disease. Recently, low-level laser therapy has been proposed as a potential treatment alternative for the management of RHL with no side effects. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of laser therapy in the management and prevention of RHL. A comprehensive search of Medline/PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science was carried out to identify published clinical trials comparing laser intervention to active and/or non-active controls for the treatment of RHL. Due to marked heterogeneity of available data, studies were assessed qualitatively, and no statistical analysis was performed. Of the retrieved 227 articles, six clinical trials met the eligibility criteria. The wavelengths, the power output, and energy density ranged between 632.5-870 nm, 5-80 W, and 2.04-48 J/cm2, respectively. All included studies found laser to be effective in the management and prevention of RHL, without any side effects. The findings of this review suggest that laser is potentially a safe and effective treatment alternative for the management of RHL. However, due to high variability in study designs and inconsistency in laser parameters among the included studies, more well-designed randomized clinical trials with standardized laser parameters are highly warranted.

OBJECTIVES: Many animal and human studies have shown associations between periodontitis and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Hence, the present systematic review sought to investigate such a potential association. METHODS: PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science databases were thoroughly searched to identify all relevant studies. The eligibility criteria were all observational (cross-sectional studies, case-control, cohort studies, and case reports) and interventional studies that assessed the relationship between periodontitis and NAFLD in humans. Due to remarkable heterogeneity and inconsistency among the included studies, no statistical analyses were conducted. RESULTS: A total of 12 studies comprising 53,384 patients were included in the present systematic review. The sample size in the individual studies ranged from 52 to 24,470 patients. All studies except one found significant associations between clinical and/or microbial periodontal parameters and NAFLD. Eight studies found significant associations between clinical periodontal parameters and NAFLD. Four microbial studies found a significant association between periodontal pathogens, especially Porphyromonas gingivalis and NAFLD development and progression. CONCLUSIONS: The available evidence suggests that periodontitis may be a risk factor for development and progression of NAFLD. However, due to limited number of prospective cohort studies included in this review along with the substantial heterogeneity among the included studies, further well-designed prospective cohort studies are highly warranted. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Given the potential association between periodontitis and NAFLD, it can be assumed that healthy periodontium may be essential for liver health.

Tobacco use is a significant health problem in Yemen and worldwide. Dental practitioners can play a pivotal role in educating their patients on the risk of smoking and motivating them to quit. This study aimed to assess the attitudes towards and practices of tobacco cessation counseling (TCC) among Yemeni dental professionals and to evaluate whether such attitudes and practices are associated with gender, smoking status, and years since graduation. In this cross-sectional study, a self-administered questionnaire containing questions regarding the practice and attitudes towards TCC in dental clinic was used. SPSS version 20 was used for data analysis. For statistical analysis, Chi-square test was used with a significance level of P < 0.05. Of the 400 distributed questionnaires, 182 were completed and analyzed. 53.3% of the respondents were males and 46.7% were females. Around one fifth of the respondents were smokers. The majority reported that they routinely ask their patients about their tobacco habits (83.5%), and advise against tobacco use (85%). Around half of the respondents believed that tobacco cessation intervention may affect their clinical practice and their income negatively through decreasing number of attending patients and believed that provision of dental treatment is more important than TCC. The majority (92%) believe that health professionals should refrain from tobacco, and 83% agree that TCC should be included in dental school curricula. Recent graduates and non-smokers showed relatively better attitudes and practices. There is an urgent need for continuing educational programs in TCC. Also, inclusion of TCC to dental curriculum is highly required.
