RESUMO

The crystallization of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-sodium iodine (NaI) composites is investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), extensional rheology, and in situ small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) with the aim of demonstrating versatile roles played by polymer-ion interactions. In the isothermal quiescent crystallization process, a decrease in the crystal growth rate is observed for PEO-NaI and is attributed to slow chain movement caused by the coordination between cations and polymer. In situ SAXS on extensional flow-induced crystallization (FIC) exhibits enhanced kinetics and orientation for both PEO and PEO-NaI with increasing strain rate. However, an overall weaker strain-rate dependence of FIC is observed for PEO-NaI, which can be interpreted as a synergistic consequence of promoted nucleation under flow and impeded crystal growth by polymer-ion interaction. A possible microscopic mechanism is proposed to account for the experimental observation based on the formation of transient cross-linking points in PEO-NaI and their influence on the entanglement network of polymer under various flow fields. The disclosed strain-rate dependence and various ion effects on the behavior of PEO-salt composites contribute to a comprehensive understanding of polymer-ion solid polyelectrolytes.

RESUMO

With a combination of fast extension rheometer and in situ synchrotron radiation ultra-fast small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering, flow-induced crystallization (FIC) of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) is studied at temperatures below and above the melting point of α crystals (Tmα). A flow phase diagram of iPP is constructed in strain rate-temperature space, composing of melt, non-crystalline shish, α and α&ß coexistence regions, based on which the kinetic and dynamic competitions among these four phases are discussed. Above Tmα , imposing strong flow reverses thermodynamic stabilities of the disordered melt and the ordered phases, leading to the occurrence of FIC of ß and α crystals as a dynamic phase transition. Either increasing temperature or stain rate favors the competiveness of the metastable ß over the stable α crystals, which is attributed to kinetic rate rather than thermodynamic stability. The violent competitions among four phases near the boundary of crystal-melt may frustrate crystallization and result in the non-crystalline shish winning out.

RESUMO

Background: In non-glaucomatous eyes, many factors impact intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction following phacoemulsification. This study aimed to determine the relationship between changes in IOP and alterations in anterior chamber biometric measurements using the Pentacam Scheimpflug anterior segment imaging system before and after uneventful phacoemulsification in non-glaucomatous eyes. Methods: This prospective interventional study included patients with ages of 20 - 80 years, no known systemic diseases, and visually significant cataracts necessitating phacoemulsification with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation. The preoperative and two-month postoperative IOPs were measured using a Goldmann applanation tonometer, and the iridocorneal angle (ICA) in four quadrants (superior, inferior, nasal, and temporal), anterior chamber depth (ACD), and anterior chamber volume (ACV) were measured using the Pentacam. Results: Forty-two eyes of 42 patients with a mean (standard deviation [SD]) age of 56.8 (10.7) years were included; 22 (52%) were men and 20 (48%) were women. The eyes demonstrated statistically significant changes in postoperative IOP, ACD, ACV, and in widening of the ICA (all P < 0.05), with a mean (SD) IOP reduction of 4.5 (2.7) mmHg, ACD deepening of 0.7 (0.6) mm, ACV increase of 33.2 (21.1) mm3, and ICA widening of 7.5o (6.4o), 12.4o (7.7o), 9.1o (7.1o), and 11.5o (6.1o) in the superior, inferior, temporal, and nasal quadrants, respectively. A significant positive correlation was detected between pre- and postoperative IOP (r = + 0.58; P < 0.001) and between pre- and postoperative ACD (r = + 0.50; P < 0.001). Significant negative correlations were detected between preoperative ACV and changes in ACV (r = - 0.42; P < 0.001) and between preoperative ICA and changes in ICA (r = - 0.02; P = 0.001). However, no significant correlations were observed between the changes in IOP and patient age (r = + 0.001; P = 0.957) and axial length of the eye (r = + 0.13; P = 0.221), or changes in ICA (r = - 0.01; P = 0.945), ACD (r = + 0.01; P = 0.945), and ACV (r = - 0.12; P = 0.599). Conclusions: We observed a significant reduction in IOP, widening of the ICA, and increases in ACD and ACV after phacoemulsification; however, there was no significant correlation between changes in IOP and other biometric variables. Further studies are required to determine the exact mechanisms underlying these effects.

RESUMO

Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is the most common structural abnormality associated with CKD patients accounting for 70% of the patients suffering LVH with ESRD. This art of the state review is first of its nature which aimed to analyze the studies involving LVH in CKD patients, and stage-wise association of CKD with various geometrical patterns of LVH. The literature search was done through various databases like PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHIL, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library. After careful quality assessment a total of 7 studies, and 2121 patients were included in our study. The mean age of the patients was 61.5±12.4 years. Similarly, the mean value of eGFR was 39.81±13.71 ml/min. The incidence of LVH was 47.05%, and on stage-wise analysis, the higher CKD stage was associated with eccentric LVH as compared to lower stages. The ejection fraction (EF) values were showing preserved EF in all included studies. ESRD was showing more preponderance towards eccentric LVH as compared to other stages of CKD.

RESUMO

Chitosan (CS) is widely used as a natural biopolymer due to its semi-crystalline structure, good film-forming properties, and easy availability. CS-based composite films are widely used in industry, particularly in the food sector as active food packaging. Despite all of these advantages, their wide range of applications are constrained by poor mechanical properties. Therefore, this work introduced refined bamboo cellulose powder (RBCP), a reinforcing material that is extracted from waste bamboo pulp and applied to CS composite films to enhance their mechanical and physicochemical properties. The chemical composition and crystallinity properties of CS composite films with RBCP addition were observed by ATR-FTIR and XRD. The homogeneous and heterogeneous surfaces of the RBCP incorporated films before biodegradation and after biodegradation (20 days) were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The increase in reinforcing RBCP materials from 0.00 to 5.00 % resulted in an increase in tensile strength for CS/RBCP films from 2.9 to 8.3 MPa. The application of the CS/RBCP/5 composite film as red grapefruit storage was also investigated, which performed much better than commercial plastic and control CS films with 92.8 and 88.6 % viability of S. aureus and E. coli bacteria. Overall achieved properties demonstrated strong potential for usage as active packaging materials to preserve and lengthen the shelf life of red grapefruits.

RESUMO

Robust platforms and advanced biocompatible materials having diverse performances are in tremendous demand for cryopreservation of biocells, which are greatly limited by the crystallization, formation, and growth of ice crystals. The fickle structure and the arduous extraction process of modern attainable antifreezing proteins cause fatal cryoinjury of the cells making it challenging to develop anti-icing materials. Thus, designing Au colloids is an effective way to combat cell-damaging concerns during the ice freezing-thawing process. Herein, we propose an emerging biomimetic hybrid nanomaterial (AuNR@SiO2-CDs) prepared by combining the photoheating and rewarming controlling characteristics of carbon dots (CDs) and gold nanorods (AuNRs), respectively, via a SiO2 scaffold that has an optimal aspect ratio of ∼4.4. The performance of the material is applied in the freezing and resuscitation of Hela cells. The typical linkage between the AuNR and CDs not only retains the stable structure but also possesses the symmetric functional characteristics of affirmative cryoprotectant materials and sustained low cytotoxicity of cell viability >90%. The cell recovery rate of the Hela cell is significantly improved to ∼60%, which is propped up to >4% higher by the laser irradiation dose. The above hybrid material is paving a path toward novel bionic antifreezing proteins and is envisioned for ice recrystallization inhibition and rapid rewarming.

RESUMO

Background: Urinary bladder tumor recurrence following transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) is a common issue. This study aims to determine how urine alkalinization affects bladder tumor recurrence after surgery. Materials and methods: Sixty patients receiving mitomycin C (MMC) therapy after TURBT were divided into two groups based on mean pH values. Twenty-six patients were in group A, whose urine pH was below 5.5. However, there were 34 patients in group B, and their urine pH was higher than 5.5. Both groups of patients were given intravesical MMC once weekly for 6 weeks following TURBT. A cystoscopy was performed as a follow-up at 3, 6, and 12 months. Urine pH and the recurrence-free survival rate were compared using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and the COX proportional hazard model. Results: The mean time to tumor recurrence in group A (intravesical MMC in acidic urine) and group B (intravesical MMC in alkaline urine) was 12.48 versus 16.84 months, respectively. Alkaline urine pH was identified as an independent predictor of preventing the recurrence of superficial bladder tumors by univariate COX regression analysis. Age, sex, and mean tumor size did not affect the likelihood of tumor recurrence. However, smoking had an association with increased tumor recurrence. Conclusion: Tumor recurrence post-TURBT is delayed in patients with alkaline urine pH. Smoking is an independent risk factor for bladder tumors.

RESUMO

Abortion is one of the leading causes of economic losses in the livestock industry worldwide. Chlamydia abortus, Coxiella burnetii, and Brucella spp. are the leading cause of late fetal loss in small ruminants. This study determined the seroprevalence of these agents in small ruminants in district Jhang. A total of 385 serum samples were taken from the sheep and goats from different flocks with a history of abortion and subjected to i-ELISA. Further, samples were analysed for liver enzymes and total serum protein using a semi-automated chemistry analyzer. The result of indirect commercial ELISA showed 13.0, 4.2 and 11.2% prevalence for Coxiella burnetii, Chlamydia abortus, and Brucella spp., respectively. Values of different serum parameters (ALT, AST, and total protein) of seropositive animals were also determined. There was a significant rise in AST and ALT values of infected animals (p ≤ 0.05). Total protein decreased for all three infections, but a significant drop was noted in Brucella positive sheep serum samples. Various risk factors were studied. Binary logistic regression proved a significant role of ticks for coxiellosis and brucellosis. Age, parity, and species did not impact the prevalence of diseases studied.

RESUMO

Polymer films based on polyethylene (PE) and ionomer ethylene/methacrylic acid (EMAA) copolymer blend were prepared by film blowing, whose surface properties were tuned by varying processing parameters, i.e., take up ratio (TUR). Blends of PE/EMAA copolymer were firstly prepared by the melt-mixing method, before being further blown to films. The wettability of the film was investigated by measuring the contact angle/water-film encounter time, and optical properties, i.e., the haze and transmittance. The wettability was found to be enhanced with the increase of TUR. So too was the haze, while the transmittance was found to be almost independent of TUR. The XPS and AFM results directly show the increasing polar functional groups (-COO-) on the surface and roughness with increasing TUR. Further analysis of the 2D SAXS and WAXS unveiled the origin of the invariant transmittance, which resulted from the minor change of the crystallinity and the monotonic increase of the haze, with TUR resulting from the evolution of crystal orientation. In addition to other post-modification methods, the current study provides an alternative route to prepare large-scale PE films as the template for the advanced potential applications, i.e., covering in the layer of roof, the privacy of protective windows, and multitudes of packaging.
