BACKGROUND: An assessment of the factors that interfere with serum levels and the persistence of anti-SARs-CoV-2 IgG antibodies is essential in order to estimate the risk of reinfection and to plan vaccination. We analyzed the impact of the severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and the clinical and biological factors regarding the persistence of SARs-CoV-2 anti-spike protein (IgG-S) antibodies at 12 months. METHODS: This was an observational, longitudinal study with individuals who had recovered from COVID-19 between August 2020 and June 2021. Peripheral blood samples were collected from volunteers who were hospitalized (SERIOUS COVID-19) and those who required no hospitalization (COVID-19 LIGHT). Samples were grouped according to days after symptom onset: up to 90, between 91 and 180, ≥ 180 days after symptom onset. A semiquantitative test for IgG anti-spike protein S1(IgG-S1) was used. RESULTS: We analyzed 238 individuals who had recovered from COVID-19, of whom 87 had been hospitalized and 151 had not. They provided 148 and 220 samples, respectively. Among those hospitalized, males (65.5%), volunteers aged over 60 years (41.1%), comorbidities such as arterial hypertension (67.8%) and diabetes mellitus (37.9%) were most frequent. We observed higher median serum IgG-S1 titers among those who had recovered from COVID-19 and had been hospitalized, at all collection time intervals (p < 0.001). We observed a weak correlation of increasing age with humoral IgG-S1 response (Spearman correlation = 0.298). There was a greater probability of IgG-S1 antibody persistence over time among samples from hospitalized individuals compared to samples from non-hospitalized participants (p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: This study has revealed higher titers and a higher probability of the persistence of IgG-S1 in severe cases after SARs-CoV-2 primary infection in unvaccinated recovered patients. Thus, in this study, the severe clinical presentation of COVID-19 was the main factor influencing serum levels and the persistence of IgG-S1 antibodies in COVID-19.

We present a Raman spectroscopy study of the vibrational properties of free-base meso-tetra(4-pyridyl) porphyrin polycrystals under various temperature and hydrostatic pressure conditions. The combination of experimental results and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations allows us to assign most of the observed Raman bands. The modifications in the Raman spectra when excited with 488 nm and 532 nm laser lights indicate that a resonance effect in the Qy band is taking place. The pressure-dependent results show that the resonance conditions change with increasing pressure, probably due to the shift of the electronic transitions. The temperature-dependent results show that the relative intensities of the Raman modes change at low temperatures, while no frequency shifts are observed. The experimental and theoretical analysis presented here suggest that these molecules are well represented by the C2v point symmetry group.

COVID-19 pandemic has unquestionably influenced care of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Still, its impact on patients (pts) characteristics, presentation, treatment, and outcomes remains not well established in late pandemic times. To address this issue, we performed a prospective study of type-1 AMI patients admitted in a tertiary care hospital. Pts were enrolled during 6-months in 2019 [n=122; pre-COVID-19 (PC) group] and in 2021 [n=196; late-COVID-19 (C) group]. Data was based on pts interview and review of medical records. Age and gender distribution, as well as ST/non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI/NSTEMI) proportion and access to coronariography and revascularization were similar between groups. Group C patients presented more pre-existing established cardiovascular disease (CVD) (43% vs 30%; p=0.03); more frequent description of typical chest pain (94% vs 84%; p=0,002); higher levels of pain intensity, in a 0-10 scale (8±2 vs 7±2; p=0.02); higher frequencies of AMI complications (27% vs 15%; p=0.01) and worse Killip (K) class evolution (K≥2 in 22% C vs13% PC patients; p=0.05). In conclusion, late pandemic AMI patients presented worse in-hospital outcomes in our study, though pre-hospital and hospital care were comparable to pre-pandemic times. COVID patients had a higher burden of pre-existing established CVD and a more typical and intense symptom presentation. Therefore, it can be hypothesized that "sicker" patients continued to look for help when presenting AMI symptoms, while "less sick" patients and the ones with less typical and intense symptoms possibly avoided contact with health care services during late pandemic period.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this case-control study was to verify the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes encoding drug transporters related to tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) and proximal renal tubular dysfunction (PRTD), and the association between PRTD and clinical characteristics. METHODS: The 'cases' met the diagnostic criteria for PRTD, determined by the presence of two or more of the following abnormalities: non-diabetic glycosuria, metabolic acidosis, increased uric acid and phosphorus excretion, decreased tubular phosphorus reabsorption and ß2-microglobulinuria. We analyzed eight SNPs in ABCC2, ABCC4, ABCC10 and SLC28A2 genes. Genotyping was performed using real-time PCR. RESULTS: Of the 204 people living with HIV, 38 (18.6%) met the criteria for diagnosis of PRTD and 131 were male (64.2%), with a mean age of 49 years and a history of previous antiretroviral therapy for an average of 5 years. In the multivariate analysis, older individuals, TDF use, protease inhibitor, antihypertensives and anticonvulsants were associated with a risk of developing PRTD. Increased excretion of ß2microglobulin was associated with the A/G genotype of rsCC8187710 from ABCC2 ( P = 0.003) and the following genotypes of ABCC4 SNPs: A/G from rs1059751 ( P = 0.023), G/G from rs1059751 ( P = 0.030) and C/C of rs3742106 ( P = 0.041). The increase in the fraction of excreted phosphorus was associated with the C/T genotype of SNCC rsP40037 from ABCC2 ( P = 0.0041). CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate an important relationship between SNPs associated with these markers and changes in proximal renal tubule function, and thus support their use as biomarkers for the early detection of PRTD risk.

Linear carbon chains (LCCs) are one-dimensional materials with unique properties, including high Debye temperatures and restricted selection rules for phonon interactions. Consequently, their Raman C-band frequency's temperature dependence is a probe to their thermal properties, which are well described within the Debye formalism even at room temperatures. Therefore, with the basis on a semiempirical approach we show how to use the C band to evaluate the LCCs' internal energy, heat capacity, coefficient of thermal expansion, thermal strain, and Grüneisen parameter, providing universal relations for these quantities in terms of the number of carbons atoms and the temperature.

Spiny lobsters (Family Palinuridae) are a popular seafood in Brazil. We characterize the fishing activity and analyze the population of lobster species captured in the coast of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Northeast Brazil. We monitored the landings of lobster fishermen at the start of the fishing season, from May 24 to November 21, in 2010, at Pirangi beach, the main landing point in the metropolitan area of Natal. The lobster fisherman in the region use small vessels and a compressor to dive in artificial reefs known as marambaias. The artisanal fishermen are engaged in several illegal practices and revealed a greater capture of lobsters categorized as small-sized for the market (11-13.95cm tail length). The capture area led to different fishing pressures for each species. For P. laevicauda, fishing pressure occurred for all size classes, while for P. meripurpuratus, pressure occurred partially, only for a few population cohorts. On regional scale, fishing involved a demand-supply trade balance centered on the size of capture vs. abundance, regardless of the natural interespecific differences on body size and the preferential distribution area. Our results provide key information for future decision making involving the fishing of spiny lobster.

The receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) (RANK), its ligand (RANKL), and the decoy receptor osteoprotegerin (OPG) are a triad of proteins that regulate bone metabolism, and serum OPG is considered a biomarker for cardiovascular diseases and Type 2 diabetes; however, the implications of OPG in adipose tissue metabolism remains elusive. In this study, we investigate RANK-RANKL-OPG signaling in white adipose tissue browning. Histological analysis of osteoprotegerin knockout (OPG-/-) mice showed subcutaneous white adipose tissue (sWAT) browning, resistance for high-fat diet-induced weight gain, and preserved glucose metabolism compared with wild-type (WT) mice. Stromal vascular fraction (SVF) cells from sWAT of OPG-/- mice showed multilocular morphology and higher expression of brown adipocyte marker genes compared with those from the WT group. Infusion of RANKL induced browning and elevated respiratory rates in sWAT, along with increased whole body oxygen consumption in mice measured by indirect calorimetry. Subcutaneous WAT-derived SVF and 3T3-L1 cells, but not mature white adipocytes, differentiated into beige adipose tissue in the presence of RANKL. Moreover, SVF cells, even under white adipocyte differentiation, showed multilocular lipid droplet, lower lipid content, and increased expression of beige adipocyte markers with RANKL stimulation. In this study, we show for the first time the contribution of RANKL to increase energy expenditure by inducing beige adipocyte differentiation in preadipocytes.

Isolated linear carbon chains (LCCs) encapsulated by multiwalled carbon nanotubes are studied under hydrostatic pressure (P) via resonance Raman scattering. The LCCs' spectroscopic signature C band around 1850 cm^{-1} softens linearly with increasing P. A simple anharmonic force-constant model not only describes such softening but also shows that the LCCs' Young's modulus (E), Grüneisen parameter (γ), and strain (ϵ) follow universal P^{-1} and P^{2} laws, respectively. In particular, γ also presents a unified behavior for all LCCs. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first results reported on such isolated systems and the first work to explore universal P-dependent responses for LCCs' E, ϵ, and γ.

16S rRNA methylases confer high-level resistance to aminoglycosides which are used to treat serious infections caused by gram-negative bacteria, such as Acinetobacter spp. Some genes encoding these enzymes are disseminated worldwide, while others were detected in only some countries. The objective was to characterize the susceptibility profile to aminoglycosides (amikacin and gentamicin) of clinical isolates of Acinetobacter spp. from an oncological hospital in Recife, and given the resistance to both antimicrobials, to characterize minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of amikacin, gentamicin and tobramycin, the occurrence of 16S rRNA methylase genes (armA, rmtB, rmtC and rmtD) and of ß-lactamase gene (blaKPC) and the clonal profile. Isolates resistant to both antimicrobials, amikacin and gentamicin, were selected by disk diffusion technique in Mueller-Hinton agar and identified. Broth microdilution was conducted to determine MICs of amikacin, gentamicin, and tobramycin. These isolates were subjected to polymerase chain reaction and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Among 23 analyzed isolates, 12 (52.2%) were resistant to gentamicin and amikacin and identified as Acinetobacter baumannii. Among these, 11 (91.7%), 12 (100%), and 9 (75%) isolates showed respectively MICs > 256 µg/mL of amikacin, > 64 µg/mL of gentamicin, and > 64 µg/mL of tobramycin. The armA gene was found in 12 (100%) isolates and 6 (50%) showed coexistence of armA, rmtB, and rmtC genes. The rmtD and blaKPC genes were not detected. These isolates showed high genetic similarity (92%) and were classified as clone A. Elaboration and fulfillment of measures are thus essential to prevent the spread of this resistance mechanism.

Emergent fungal infections are uncommon conditions which frequently lead to death. To our knowledge, only a few cases of invasive infection by Cystobasidium minutum (previously known as Rhodotorula minuta) have been reported. Moreover, several factors are responsible for deep site infections, such as catheter-related fungemia. This report describes the first case report of Cystobasidium minutum causing fungemia in Brazil. The pathogens fungemia was demonstrated by catheter and blood culture-proven, and both yeasts were identified by sequences of D1/D2 rDNA region. After the end of antifungal therapy and catheter removal, a second blood culture was found to be negative and the clinical signs and symptoms of the patient improved.

AIM: The present work aimed at the DIM-loaded microparticles development and anti-hypernociceptive action evaluation. METHOD: The formulations were prepared by O/W solvent emulsion-evaporation method and characterised by particle diameter, content and DIM encapsulation efficiency, drug release profile, thermal behaviour and physicochemical state. The anti-hypernociceptive action was evaluated in the animal model of acute inflammatory pain. RESULT: The MPs had a mean diameter in the micrometric range (368 ± 31 µm), narrow size distribution, DIM content of 150 mg/g, encapsulation efficiency around 84% and prolonged compound release. Evaluations of the association form of DIM to MPs demonstrated the feasibility of the systems to incorporate DIM and increases its thermal stability. An improvement in the anti-hypernociceptive action of DIM was observed by its microencapsuation, because it was increased and prolonged. CONCLUSION: Therefore, the MPs developed represent a promising formulation for oral administration of the DIM in the treatment of inflammatory pain.

Despite resistance exercises being associated with health outcomes, numerous issues are still unresolved and further research is required before the exercise can faithfully be prescribed as medicine. The goal of this study was to investigate whether there are sex differences in resistance training effects on metabolic alterations induced by monosodium glutamate (MSG), a model of obesity, in male and female rats. Male and female Wistar rats received MSG (4 g/kg body weight/day, s.c.) from postnatal day 1 to 10. After 10 days from MSG administration, the rats were separated into two groups: MSG-sedentary and MSG-exercised. At postnatal day 60, the animals started a resistance training protocol in an 80 degrees inclined vertical ladder apparatus and performed it for 7 weeks. Control rats received saline solution and were divided in saline-sedentary and saline-exercised. Resistance training restored all plasma biochemical parameters (glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine aminotransferase) increased in male and female rats treated with MSG. The MSG administration induced hyperglycemia associated with a decrease in the skeletal muscle glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) levels and accompanied by deregulation in proteins, G-6Pase, and tyrosine aminotransferase, involved in hepatic glucose metabolism of male and female rats. MSG induced dyslipidemia and lipotoxicity in the liver and skeletal muscle of male rats. Regarding female rats, lipotoxicity was found only in the skeletal muscle. The resistance training had beneficial effects against metabolic alterations induced by MSG in male and female rats, through regulation of proteins (GLUT2, protein kinase B, and GLUT4) involved in glucose and lipid pathways in the liver and skeletal muscle.

BACKGROUND: Incomplete virologic suppression results in mutations associated with resistance and is a major obstacle to disease control. We analyzed the genotypic profiles of HIV-1 patients at the time of the first virologic failure and the response to a salvage regimen after 48 weeks. METHODS: This work was a cross-sectional, retrospective, analytical study based on data collected from medical records and genotyping tests between 2006 and 2016. The sample consisted of data on individuals living with HIV (PLWH) from three major reference centers. RESULTS: A total of 184 patients were included in the data analysis. Viral subtype B was the most common (81.3%) as well as M184 V/I (85.3%) and K103 codon mutations (65.8%). Forty-eight weeks after switching to a salvage regimen, 67.3% of patients achieved an undetectable viral load. DISCUSSION: The number of mutations associated with nucleos(t)ide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTI(t)s) did not affect virologic suppression (9.3% for zero NRTI(t)-associated mutations vs 48.6% for 1-2 NRTI(t)-associated mutations vs 42.1% for ≥3 NRTI(t)-associated mutations, p = 0.179). An ARV time (the beginning of the first ARV regimen up to genotyping) of > 36 months was a protective factor for detectable viral load (PR = 0.60, 95% CI = 0.39-0.92, p = 0.020) and a risk factor for developing ≥3 NRTI(t)-associated mutations (PR = 2.43, 95% CI 1.38-4.28, p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: We found that extensive resistance to NRTI(t)s at the time of the first virologic failure did not impact virologic suppression at 48 weeks after switching to a second-line therapy based on NRTI(t)s plus protease inhibitors.

At present, the standardisation of electrical equipment communications is on the rise. In particular, manufacturers are releasing equipment for the smart grid endowed with communication protocols such as DNP3, IEC 61850, and MODBUS. However, there are legacy equipment operating in the electricity distribution network that cannot communicate using any of these protocols. Thus, we propose an infrastructure to allow the integration of legacy electrical equipment to smart grids by using wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In this infrastructure, each legacy electrical device is connected to a sensor node, and the sink node runs a middleware that enables the integration of this device into a smart grid based on suitable communication protocols. This middleware performs tasks such as the translation of messages between the power substation control centre (PSCC) and electrical equipment in the smart grid. Moreover, the infrastructure satisfies certain requirements for communication between the electrical equipment and the PSCC, such as enhanced security, short response time, and automatic configuration. The paper’s contributions include a solution that enables electrical companies to integrate their legacy equipment into smart-grid networks relying on any of the above mentioned communication protocols. This integration will reduce the costs related to the modernisation of power substations.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? Monosodium glutamate causes cognitive impairment. Does resistance exercise improve the performance of rats treated with monosodium glutamate? What is the main finding and its importance? Resistance exercise is effective against monosodium glutamate-induced memory impairment in male and female rats. Monosodium glutamate (MSG), a flavour enhancer in diets, causes cognitive impairment in rodents. Exercise has been reported to protect against impairment of memory in humans. In this study, we investigated whether resistance exercise improves the performance of male and female rats treated with MSG in tests of memory and motor co-ordination. Wistar rats received MSG [4 g (kg body weight)-1  day-1 , s.c.] from postnatal day 1 to 10. At postnatal day 60, the animals started a resistance exercise protocol in an 80 deg inclined vertical ladder apparatus and performed it during 7 weeks. Rats performed object recognition and location memory tests. Resistance exercise reduced impairment in motor co-ordination of male and female rats treated with MSG. Resistance exercise was effective against the decrease in exploratory preference in the long-term recognition memory for novel objects of male rats treated with MSG. In MSG-treated female rats, resistance exercise was effective against the decrease in exploratory preference in the novel object location test. The exploratory preference of female rats in the long-term recognition memory test was similar in all groups. The short-term memory was not altered by MSG or resistance exercise in male and female rats. This study demonstrates that MSG affected the memory of male and female rats in different ways. Resistance exercise was effective against the decrease in recognition for male rats and in location memory for female rats treated with MSG. This report demonstrates the beneficial effects of resistance exercise against the prejudice of motor condition and impairment of memory induced by MSG in male and female rats.

In this paper we explore the direct transfer via lamination of chemical vapor deposition graphene onto different flexible substrates. The transfer method investigated here is fast, simple, and does not require an intermediate transfer membrane, such as polymethylmethacrylate, which needs to be removed afterward. Various substrates of general interest in research and industry were studied in this work, including polytetrafluoroethylene filter membranes, PVC, cellulose nitrate/cellulose acetate filter membranes, polycarbonate, paraffin, polyethylene terephthalate, paper, and cloth. By comparing the properties of these substrates, two critical factors to ensure a successful transfer on bare substrates were identified: the substrate's hydrophobicity and good contact between the substrate and graphene. For substrates that do not satisfy those requirements, polymethylmethacrylate can be used as a surface modifier or glue to ensure successful transfer. Our results can be applied to facilitate current processes and open up directions for applications of chemical vapor deposition graphene on flexible substrates. A broad range of applications can be envisioned, including fabrication of graphene devices for opto/organic electronics, graphene membranes for gas/liquid separation, and ubiquitous electronics with graphene.
