RESUMO

Due to their sub-millimeter spatial resolution, ink-based additive manufacturing tools are typically considered less attractive than nanophotonics. Among these tools, precision micro-dispensers with sub-nanoliter volumetric control offer the finest spatial resolution: down to 50 µm. Within a sub-second, a flawless, surface-tension-driven spherical shape of the dielectric dot is formed as a self-assembled µlens. When combined with dispersive nanophotonic structures defined on a silicon-on-insulator substrate, we show that the dispensed dielectric µlenses [numerical aperture (NA) = 0.36] engineer the angular field distribution of vertically coupled nanostructures. The µlenses improve the angular tolerance for the input and reduces the angular spread of the output beam in the far field. The micro-dispenser is fast, scalable, and back-end-of-line compatible, allowing geometric-offset-caused efficiency reductions and center wavelength drift to be easily fixed. The design concept is experimentally verified by comparing several exemplary grating couplers with and without a µlens on top. A difference of less than 1 dB between incident angles of 7° and 14° is observed in the index-matched µlens, while the reference grating coupler shows around 5 dB contrast.

The physical properties of a semicrystalline polymer thin film are intimately related to the morphology of its crystalline domains. While the mechanisms underlying crystallization of flat-on oriented polymer crystals are well known, similar mechanisms remain elusive for edge-on oriented thin films due to the propensity of substantially thin films to adopt flat-on orientations. Here, we employ an epitaxial polymer-substrate relationship to enforce edge-on crystallization in thin films. Using matrix-assisted pulsed laser evaporation (MAPLE), we deposit films in which crystal nucleation is spatially separated from subsequent epitaxial crystallization. These experiments, together with phase-field simulations, demonstrate a highly anisotropic and localized material depletion during edge-on crystallization. These results provide deeper insight into the physics of polymer crystallization under confinement and introduce a processing motif in the crystallization of ultrathin structured films.

Fast and versatile alteration of focal positions is critical for applications including selective volumetric modification and parallel laser processing. In this Letter, we implement and characterize an ultrafast, variable focal system using a tunable acoustic gradient of index lens to achieve multi-focal laser processing. We apply our method to the femtosecond laser-induced intra-volumetric modification in glass to show the flexibility in controlling focal positions. Based on this understanding, we exploit the multi-focal nature of the system to demonstrate laser machining on both surfaces of a transparent glass slide in a single lateral scan.

Functionalized cellulosics have shown promise as naturally derived thermoresponsive gelling agents. However, the dynamics of thermally induced phase transitions of these polymers at the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) are not fully understood. Here, with experiments and theoretical considerations, we address how molecular architecture dictates the mechanisms and dynamics of phase transitions for cellulose ethers. Above the LCST, we show that hydroxypropyl substituents favor the spontaneous formation of liquid droplets, whereas methyl substituents induce fibril formation through diffusive growth. In celluloses which contain both methyl and hydroxypropyl substituents, fibrillation initiates after liquid droplet formation, suppressing the fibril growth to a sub-diffusive rate. Unlike for liquid droplets, the dissolution of fibrils back into the solvated state occurs with significant thermal hysteresis. We tune this hysteresis by altering the content of substituted hydroxypropyl moieties. This work provides a systematic study to decouple competing mechanisms during the phase transition of multi-functionalized macromolecules.

Structural disorder inherent to amorphous materials affords them unique, tailorable properties desirable for diverse applications, but our ability to exploit these phenomena is limited by a lack of understanding of complex structure-property relationships. Here we focus on nonlinear optical absorption and derive a relationship between disorder and the two-photon absorption (2PA) coefficient. We employ an open-aperture Z-scan to measure the 2PA spectra of arsenic (III) sulfide (As2S3) chalcogenide glass films processed with two solvents that impart different levels of structural disorder. We find that the effect of solvent choice on 2PA depends on the energy of the exciting photons and explain this as a consequence of bonding disorder and electron state localization. Our results demonstrate how optical nonlinearities in As2S3 can be enhanced through informed processing and present a fundamental relationship between disorder and 2PA for a generalized amorphous solid.

RESUMO

We report a new HxCrS2-based crystalline/amorphous layered material synthesized by soft chemical methods. We study the structural nature and composition of this material with atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), revealing a complex structure consisting of alternating layers of amorphous and crystalline lamellae. Furthermore, the magnetic properties show evidence for increased magnetic frustration compared to the parent compound NaCrS2. Finally, we show that this material can be exfoliated, thus providing a facile synthesis method for chromium-sulfide-based ultrathin layers. The material reported herein can not only be a source of new thin TMD-related sheets for potential application in catalysis but also be of interest for realizing new 2D magnetic materials.

Understanding jet formation from non-Newtonian fluids is important for improving the quality of various printing and dispensing techniques. Here, we use a laser-based nozzleless method to investigate impulsively formed jets of non-Newtonian fluids. Experiments with a time-resolved imaging setup demonstrate multiple regimes during jet formation that can result in zero, single, or multiple drops per laser pulse. These regimes depend on the ink thickness, ink rheology, and laser energy. For optimized printing, it is desirable to select parameters that result in a single-drop breakup; however, the strain-rate dependent rheology of these inks makes it challenging to determine these conditions a priori. Rather, we present a methodology for characterizing these regimes using dimensionless parameters evaluated from the process parameters and measured ink rheology that are obtained prior to printing and, so, offer a criterion for a single-drop breakup.

The position monitoring task is a measure of divided spatial attention in which participants track the changing positions of one or more objects, attempting to represent positions with as much precision as possible. Typically precision of representations declines with each target object added to participants' attention load. Since the motor system requires precise representations of changing target positions, we investigated whether position monitoring would be facilitated by increasing engagement of the motor system. Using motion capture, we recorded the positions of participants' index finger during pointing responses. Participants attempted to monitor the changing positions of between one and four target discs as they moved randomly around a large projected display. After a period of disc motion, all discs disappeared and participants were prompted to report the final position of one of the targets, either by mouse click or by pointing to the final perceived position on the screen. For mouse click responses, precision declined with attentional load. For pointing responses, precision declined only up to three targets and remained at the same level for four targets, suggesting obligatory attention to all four objects for loads above two targets. Kinematic profiles for pointing responses for highest and lowest loads showed greater motor adjustments during the point, demonstrating that, like external environmental task demands, the quality of internal representations affects motor kinematics. Specifically, these adjustments reflect the difficulty of both pointing to very precisely represented locations as well as keeping representations distinct from one another.

We examined the neurophysiological underpinnings of individual differences in the ability to maintain up-to-date representations of the positions of moving objects. In two experiments similar to the multiple object tracking (MOT) task, we asked observers to monitor continuously one or several targets as they moved unpredictably for a semi-random period. After all objects disappeared, observers were immediately prompted to report the perceived final position of one queried target. Precision of these position reports declined with attentional load, and reports tended to best resemble positions occupied by the queried target between 0 and 30ms in the past. Measurement of event-related potentials showed a contralateral delay activity over occipital scalp, maximal in the right hemisphere. The peak power-spectral frequency of observers' eyes-closed resting occipital alpha oscillations reliably predicted performance, such that lower-frequency alpha was associated with superior spatial localisation. Slower resting alpha might be associated with a cognitive style that depends less on memory-related processing and instead emphasises attention to changing stimuli.

Adaptive governance must work "on the ground," that is, it must operate through structures and procedures that the people it governs perceive to be legitimate and fair, as well as incorporating processes and substantive goals that are effective in allowing social-ecological systems (SESs) to adapt to climate change and other impacts. To address the continuing and accelerating alterations that climate change is bringing to SESs, adaptive governance generally will require more flexibility than prior governance institutions have often allowed. However, to function as good governance, adaptive governance must pay real attention to the problem of how to balance this increased need for flexibility with continuing governance stability so that it can foster adaptation to change without being perceived or experienced as perpetually destabilizing, disruptive, and unfair. Flexibility and stability serve different purposes in governance, and a variety of tools exist to strike different balances between them while still preserving the governance institution's legitimacy among the people governed. After reviewing those purposes and the implications of climate change for environmental governance, we examine psychological insights into the structuring of adaptive governance and the variety of legal tools available to incorporate those insights into adaptive governance regimes. Because the substantive goals of governance systems will differ among specific systems, we do not purport to comment on what the normative or substantive goals of law should be. Instead, we conclude that attention to process and procedure (including participation), as well as increased use of substantive standards (instead of rules), may allow an increased level of substantive flexibility to operate with legitimacy and fairness, providing the requisite levels of psychological, social, and economic stability needed for communities to adapt successfully to the Anthropocene.

The term "governance" encompasses both governmental and nongovernmental participation in collective choice and action. Law dictates the structure, boundaries, rules, and processes within which governmental action takes place, and in doing so becomes one of the focal points for analysis of barriers to adaptation as the effects of climate change are felt. Adaptive governance must therefore contemplate a level of flexibility and evolution in governmental action beyond that currently found in the heavily administrative governments of many democracies. Nevertheless, over time, law itself has proven highly adaptive in western systems of government, evolving to address and even facilitate the emergence of new social norms (such as the rights of women and minorities) or to provide remedies for emerging problems (such as pollution). Thus, there is no question that law can adapt, evolve, and be reformed to make room for adaptive governance. In doing this, not only may barriers be removed, but law may be adjusted to facilitate adaptive governance and to aid in institutionalizing new and emerging approaches to governance. The key is to do so in a way that also enhances legitimacy, accountability, and justice, or else such reforms will never be adopted by democratic societies, or if adopted, will destabilize those societies. By identifying those aspects of the frameworks for adaptive governance reviewed in the introduction to this special feature relevant to the legal system, we present guidelines for evaluating the role of law in environmental governance to identify the ways in which law can be used, adapted, and reformed to facilitate adaptive governance and to do so in a way that enhances the legitimacy of governmental action.

In this article we summarize histories of nonlinear, complex interactions among societal, legal, and ecosystem dynamics in six North American water basins, as they respond to changing climate. These case studies were chosen to explore the conditions for emergence of adaptive governance in heavily regulated and developed social-ecological systems nested within a hierarchical governmental system. We summarize resilience assessments conducted in each system to provide a synthesis and reference by the other articles in this special feature. We also present a general framework used to evaluate the interactions between society and ecosystem regimes and the governance regimes chosen to mediate those interactions. The case studies show different ways that adaptive governance may be triggered, facilitated, or constrained by ecological and/or legal processes. The resilience assessments indicate that complex interactions among the governance and ecosystem components of these systems can produce different trajectories, which include patterns of (a) development and stabilization, (b) cycles of crisis and recovery, which includes lurches in adaptation and learning, and (3) periods of innovation, novelty, and transformation. Exploration of cross scale (Panarchy) interactions among levels and sectors of government and society illustrate that they may constrain development trajectories, but may also provide stability during crisis or innovation at smaller scales; create crises, but may also facilitate recovery; and constrain system transformation, but may also provide windows of opportunity in which transformation, and the resources to accomplish it, may occur. The framework is the starting point for our exploration of how law might play a role in enhancing the capacity of social-ecological systems to adapt to climate change.

We present a novel 3D tracking approach capable of locating single particles with nanometric precision over wide axial ranges. Our method uses a fast acousto-optic liquid lens implemented in a bright field microscope to multiplex light based on color into different and selectable focal planes. By separating the red, green, and blue channels from an image captured with a color camera, information from up to three focal planes can be retrieved. Multiplane information from the particle diffraction rings enables precisely locating and tracking individual objects up to an axial range about 5 times larger than conventional single-plane approaches. We apply our method to the 3D visualization of the well-known coffee-stain phenomenon in evaporating water droplets.

A series of compounds with the composition Na(3-x)Sn(2-x)Sb(x)NaO6 (x = 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, and 1.0) has been prepared by solid-state reaction and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction (for x = 0.0), and impedance spectroscopy. The compounds have a layered structure derived from that of α-NaFeO2, with alternating Na3 planes and NaSn2O6 slabs with honeycomb in-plane ordering. The structure of the parent compound, Na2SnO3, has been determined as a two-layer honeycomb in monoclinic space group C2/c. Due to charge neutrality requirements, the substitution of Sb(5+) for Sn(4+) creates sodium site vacancies that facilitate high sodium ion mobility. A decrease in layer stacking disorder is also observed. The conductivity increases linearly with x and has a maximum at x = 0.8 (1.43 × 10(-3) S/cm at 500 °C with suboptimal sample densities). This material may be of interest as a solid Na ion electrolyte.

Product energy intensity (PEI) metrics allow industry and policymakers to quantify manufacturing energy requirements on a product-output basis. However, complexities can arise for benchmarking of thermally concentrated products, particularly in the food processing industry, due to differences in outlet composition, feed material composition, and processing technology. This study analyzes tomato paste as a typical, high-volume concentrated product using a thermodynamics-based model. Results show that PEI for tomato pastes and purees varies from 1200 to 9700 kJ/kg over the range of 8%-40% outlet solids concentration for a 3-effect evaporator, and 980-7000 kJ/kg for a 5-effect evaporator. Further, the PEI for producing paste at 31% outlet solids concentration in a 3-effect evaporator varies from 13,000 kJ/kg at 3% feed solids concentration to 5900 kJ/kg at 6%; for a 5-effect evaporator, the variation is from 9200 kJ/kg at 3%, to 4300 kJ/kg at 6%. Methods to compare the PEI of different product concentrations on a standard basis are evaluated. This paper also presents methods to develop PEI benchmark values for multiple plants. These results focus on the case of a tomato paste processing facility, but can be extended to other products and industries that utilize thermal concentration.

Owing to the kinetic nature of the glass transition, the ability to significantly alter the properties of amorphous solids by the typical routes to the vitreous state is restricted. For instance, an order of magnitude change in the cooling rate merely modifies the value of the glass transition temperature (T(g)) by a few degrees. Here we show that matrix-assisted pulsed laser evaporation (MAPLE) can be used to form ultrastable and nanostructured glassy polymer films which, relative to the standard poly(methyl methacrylate) glass formed on cooling at standard rates, are 40% less dense, have a 40 K higher T(g), and exhibit a two orders of magnitude enhancement in kinetic stability at high temperatures. The unique set of properties of MAPLE-deposited glasses may make them attractive in technologies where weight and stability are central design issues.

We present a generalized model to explain the spatial and temporal evolution of photoinduced surface structure in photosensitive amorphous thin films. The model describes these films as an incompressible viscous fluid driven by a photoinduced pressure originating from dipole rearrangement. This derivation requires only the polarizability, viscosity and surface tension of the system. Using values of these physical parameters, we check the validity of the model by fitting to experimental data of As2S3 and demonstrating good agreement.

Existing auto-focusing methods in laser processing typically include two independent modules, one for surface detection and another for [Formula: see text]-axis adjustment. The latter is mostly implemented by mechanical [Formula: see text] stage motion, which is up to three orders of magnitude slower than the lateral processing speed. To alleviate this processing bottleneck, we developed a single-lens approach, using only one high-speed [Formula: see text]-scanning optical element, to accomplish both in situ surface detection and focus control quasi-simultaneously in a dual-beam setup. The probing beam scans the surface along the [Formula: see text]-axis continuously, and its reflection is detected by a set of confocal optics. Based on the temporal response of the detected signal, we have developed and experimentally demonstrated a dynamic surface detection method at 140-350 kHz, with a controlled detection range, high repeatability, and minimum linearity error of 1.10%. Sequentially, by synchronizing at a corresponding oscillation phase of the [Formula: see text]-scanning lens, the fabrication beam is directed to the probed [Formula: see text] position for precise focus alignment. Overall, our approach provides instantaneous surface tracking by collecting position information and executing focal control both at 140-350 kHz, which significantly accelerates the axial alignment process and offers great potential for enhancing the speed of advanced manufacturing processes in three-dimensional space.

All-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) that employ solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) have the potential to replace more conventional batteries that employ liquid electrolytes due to their inherent safety, compatibility with lithium metal and reputable ionic conductivity. Li7P3S11 is a promising SSE with reported ionic conductivities in the order of 10 mS/cm. However, its susceptibility to degradation through oxidation and hydrolysis limits its commercial viability. In this work, we demonstrate a laser-based processing method for SSEs to improve humidity stability. It was determined that laser power and scanning speed greatly affect surface morphology, as well as the resulting chemical composition of Li7P3S11 samples. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed that laser treatment can produce SSEs with higher ionic conductivities than pristine counterparts after air exposure. Further examination of chemical composition revealed an optimal laser processing condition that reduces the rate of P2S74- degradation. This work demonstrates the ability of laser-based processing to be used to improve the stability of SSEs.

This study presents a new material, "Hx CrS2 " (denotes approximate composition) formed by proton-exchange of NaCrS2 which has a measured capacity of 728 mAh g-1 with significant improvements to capacity retention, sustaining over 700 mAh g-1 during cycling experiments. This is the highest reported capacity for a transition metal sulfide electrode and outperforms the most promising proposed sodium anodes to date. Hx CrS2 exhibits a biphasic structure featuring alternating crystalline and amorphous lamella on the scale of a few nanometers. This unique structural motif enables reversible access to Cr redox in the material resulting in higher capacities than seen in the parent structure which features only S redox. Pretreatment by proton-exchange offers a route to materials such as Hx CrS2 which provide fast diffusion and high capacities for sodium-ion batteries.
