RESUMO

Brassinosteroids (BR) and gibberellins (GA) regulate plant height and leaf angle in maize (Zea mays). Mutants with defects in BR or GA biosynthesis or signaling identify components of these pathways and enhance our knowledge about plant growth and development. In this study, we characterized three recessive mutant alleles of GRAS transcription factor 42 (gras42) in maize, a GRAS transcription factor gene orthologous to the DWARF AND LOW TILLERING (DLT) gene of rice (Oryza sativa). These maize mutants exhibited semi-dwarf stature, shorter and wider leaves, and more upright leaf angle. Transcriptome analysis revealed a role for GRAS42 as a determinant of BR signaling. Analysis of the expression consequences from loss of GRAS42 in the gras42-mu1021149 mutant indicated a weak loss of BR signaling in the mutant, consistent with its previously demonstrated role in BR signaling in rice. Loss of BR signaling was also evident by the enhancement of weak BR biosynthetic mutant alleles in double mutants of nana plant1-1 and gras42-mu1021149. The gras42-mu1021149 mutant had little effect on GA-regulated gene expression, suggesting that GRAS42 is not a regulator of core GA signaling genes in maize. Single-cell expression data identified gras42 expressed among cells in the G2/M phase of the cell cycle consistent with its previously demonstrated role in cell cycle gene expression in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). Cis-acting natural variation controlling GRAS42 transcript accumulation was identified by expression genome-wide association study (eGWAS) in maize. Our results demonstrate a conserved role for GRAS42/SCARECROW-LIKE 28 (SCL28)/DLT in BR signaling, clarify the role of this gene in GA signaling, and suggest mechanisms of tillering and leaf angle control by BR.

The plant hormone gibberellin (GA) impacts plant growth and development differently depending on the developmental context. In the maize (Zea mays) tassel, application of GA alters floral development, resulting in the persistence of pistils. GA signaling is achieved by the GA-dependent turnover of DELLA domain transcription factors, encoded by dwarf8 (d8) and dwarf9 (d9) in maize. The D8-Mpl and D9-1 alleles disrupt GA signaling, resulting in short plants and normal tassel floret development in the presence of excess GA. However, D9-1 mutants are unable to block GA-induced pistil development. Gene expression in developing tassels of D8-Mpl and D9-1 mutants and their wild-type siblings was determined upon excess GA3 and mock treatments. Using GA-sensitive transcripts as reporters of GA signaling, we identified a weak loss of repression under mock conditions in both mutants, with the effect in D9-1 being greater. D9-1 was also less able to repress GA signaling in the presence of excess GA3 . We treated a diverse set of maize inbred lines with excess GA3 and measured the phenotypic consequences on multiple aspects of development (e.g., height and pistil persistence in tassel florets). Genotype affected all GA-regulated phenotypes but there was no correlation between any of the GA-affected phenotypes, indicating that the complexity of the relationship between GA and development extends beyond the two-gene epistasis previously demonstrated for GA and brassinosteroid biosynthetic mutants.

Zea mays (maize) makes phytoalexins such as sesquiterpenoid zealexins, to combat invading pathogens. Zealexins are produced from farnesyl diphosphate in microgram per gram fresh weight quantities. As farnesyl diphosphate is also a precursor for many compounds essential for plant growth, the question arises as to how Z. mays produces high levels of zealexins without negatively affecting vital plant systems. To examine if specific pools of farnesyl diphosphate are made for zealexin synthesis we made CRISPR/Cas9 knockouts of each of the three farnesyl diphosphate synthases (FPS) in Z. mays and examined the resultant impacts on different farnesyl diphosphate-derived metabolites. We found that FPS3 (GRMZM2G098569) produced most of the farnesyl diphosphate for zealexins, while FPS1 (GRMZM2G168681) made most of the farnesyl diphosphate for the vital respiratory co-factor ubiquinone. Indeed, fps1 mutants had strong developmental phenotypes such as reduced stature and development of chlorosis. The replication and evolution of the fps gene family in Z. mays enabled it to produce dedicated FPSs for developmentally related ubiquinone production (FPS1) or defense-related zealexin production (FPS3). This partitioning of farnesyl diphosphate production between growth and defense could contribute to the ability of Z. mays to produce high levels of phytoalexins without negatively impacting its growth.

PURPOSE: Following SARS-CoV-2 virus infection, patients may suffer from long-lasting symptoms regardless of disease severity. Preliminary results show limitations in health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The aim of this study is to show a possible change depending on the duration since infection and the accumulation of symptoms. Additionally, other possible influencing factors will be analyzed. METHODS: The study population consisted of patients (18-65 years) presenting to the Post-COVID outpatient clinic of the University Hospital Jena, Germany, between March and October 2021. The HRQoL was assessed by the use of the RehabNeQ and the SF-36. Data analysis was descriptive with frequencies, means, and/or percentages. In addition, a univariate analysis of variance was performed to show the dependence of physical and psychological HRQoL on specific factors. This was finally tested for significance at an alpha level of 5%. RESULTS: Data from 318 patients were analyzed, most of whom had 3-6 months of infection (56%) and 5-10 symptoms persisted (60.4%). Both mental (MCS) and physical sum score (PCS) of HRQoL were significantly lower than those of the German normal population (p < .001). The number of remaining symptoms (MCS p = .0034, PCS p = .000) as well as the perceived ability to work (MCS p = .007, PCS p = .000) influenced the HRQoL. CONCLUSION: The HRQoL of patients with Post-COVID-syndrome is still reduced months after infection and so is their occupational performance. In particular, the number of symptoms could have an influence on this deficit, which would need to be further investigated. Further research is needed to detect other factors influencing HRQoL and to implement appropriate therapeutic interventions.

PURPOSE: Tinnitus is a common symptom with multiple causes and treatment options. Previous studies have investigated the effect of lidocaine iontophoresis. The aim of this review is to systematically present the effects on tinnitus and to derive possible effects. METHODS: In accordance to the PRISMA statement, the search and analysis were performed. An abstract in German or English and a performed intervention with lidocaine iontophoresis for the treatment of tinnitus, independent of the study design, were considered as inclusion criteria. Due to the heterogeneity of the studies, only a narrative synthesis was performed. RESULTS: The search yielded 179 studies of which 170 were excluded. Six full-texts and three abstracts were included. In total, 957 patients were treated with lidocaine iontophoresis. The percent improvement in symptoms after lidocaine iontophoresis ranged from 4% to 62%. The qualitative assessment of the studies resulted in an overall "weak" rating for all of them. CONCLUSIONS: Due to the heterogeneity and the limited quality of the studies found, no clear statement can be made about the efficacy. The number of those who benefited from therapy varied widely. In addition, it cannot be ruled out that the effect was merely due to electrical stimulation of the cochlea.

Meristems house the stem cells needed for the developmental plasticity observed in adverse environmental conditions and are crucial for determining plant architecture. Meristem development is particularly sensitive to deficiencies of the micronutrient boron, yet how boron integrates into meristem development pathways is unknown. We addressed this question using the boron-deficient maize mutant, tassel-less1 (tls1). Reduced boron uptake in tls1 leads to a progressive impairment of meristem development that manifests in vegetative and reproductive defects. We show, that the tls1 tassel phenotype (male reproductive structure) was partially suppressed by mutations in the CLAVATA1 (CLV1)-ortholog, thick tassel dwarf1 (td1), but not by other mutants in the well characterized CLV-WUSCHEL pathway, which controls meristem size. The suppression of tls1 by td1 correlates with altered signaling of the phytohormone cytokinin. In contrast, mutations in the meristem maintenance gene knotted1 (kn1) enhanced both vegetative and reproductive defects in tls1. In addition, reduced transcript levels of kn1 and cell cycle genes are early defects in tls1 tassel meristems. Our results show that specific meristem maintenance and hormone pathways are affected in tls1, and suggest that reduced boron levels induced by tls1 are the underlying cause of the observed defects. We, therefore, provide new insights into the molecular mechanisms affected by boron deficiency in maize, leading to a better understanding of how genetic and environmental factors integrate during shoot meristem development.

BACKGROUND: By chance, one participant of a norm value study concerning the Jenaer-Standing-Stability-Score (JESS-Score) could be measured before and after a lateral ankle sprain (LAS, Grade I). Therefore, a complete comparison of the initial function, the situation after the LAS and even after additional therapy with focus on balance and postural control, was possible. CASE PRESENTATION: A 34-year-old woman, working as medical doctor was measured her standing stability by use of the JESS-Score. A few weeks after, she experienced a mild LAS. There was no physical therapy in the first 3 months after the LAS. In the following, the patient received 7 sessions of physical therapy with focus on balance and postural control. The 2 used parts of the stability assessment (JESS-Score: 1-unipedal stance test; 2-target-step-test) changed in the course of time. Before the ankle sprain both tests on balance and postural control reached the standard value and were inconspicuous. There was no medically prescribed therapy due to the LAS, based on the minor complaints. However, after the LAS the number of deviating test items increased and was even 6 weeks and 3 months after the LAS inconsistent. Only after additional physiotherapy, the score result improved to the initial situation again. CONCLUSIONS: It is assumable that LAS is associated with postural deterioration. Therefore, the effect of exercises focussing on postural control and balance after lateral ankle sprain, even if only mild, should be investigated. Some items of the JESS-Score seem to be sensitive for evaluating changes concerning the balance ability.

Inflorescence architecture is a key determinant of yield potential in many crops and is patterned by the organization and developmental fate of axillary meristems. In cereals, flowers and grain are borne from spikelets, which differentiate in the final iteration of axillary meristem branching. In Setaria spp, inflorescence branches terminate in either a spikelet or a sterile bristle, and these structures appear to be paired. In this work, we leverage Setaria viridis to investigate a role for the phytohormones brassinosteroids (BRs) in specifying bristle identity and maintaining spikelet meristem determinacy. We report the molecular identification and characterization of the Bristleless1 (Bsl1) locus in S. viridis, which encodes a rate-limiting enzyme in BR biosynthesis. Loss-of-function bsl1 mutants fail to initiate a bristle identity program, resulting in homeotic conversion of bristles to spikelets. In addition, spikelet meristem determinacy is altered in the mutants, which produce two florets per spikelet instead of one. Both of these phenotypes provide avenues for enhanced grain production in cereal crops. Our results indicate that the spatiotemporal restriction of BR biosynthesis at boundary domains influences meristem fate decisions during inflorescence development. The bsl1 mutants provide insight into the molecular basis underlying morphological variation in inflorescence architecture.

OBJECTIVE: Do patients with bi- or trimalleolar ankle injury show differences in motor skills and safety in comparison with healthy, active, age-matched control subjects? STUDY DESIGN: Prospective controlled cross-sectional study. METHODS: Inclusion of 17 patients with bi- or trimalleolar ankle injury (mean 1.5 years postsurgery) and 23 healthy, active subjects of comparable age (fitness studio). Measurement instruments: motor test procedures and questionnaires. RESULTS: Comparison of patients and control subjects by routine daily motor function: patients < controls with the "timed 'Up & Go' test" (TUG, p = 0.011), the chair rising test and a coordination test using a gymnastic hoop (CRT and GR p > 0.05), fear of falling: patients > controls (p = 0.003) and physical activity: patients < controls (p = 0.032). CONCLUSION: There were no significant motor deficits in activities of daily life between the patients and controls, only tendencies; however, the patients showed definite limitations with an increased fear of falling and a reduced physical activity compared with the healthy control group. The resulting differences should be positively influenced by appropriate enhancement of training or participation in sports courses. The aim is to achieve a similar quality of life by a perception of safety and trust in one's own motor skills.

A small number of phytohormones dictate the pattern of plant form affecting fitness via reproductive architecture and the plant's ability to forage for light, water, and nutrients. Individual phytohormone contributions to plant architecture have been studied extensively, often following a single component of plant architecture, such as plant height or branching. Both brassinosteroid (BR) and gibberellin (GA) affect plant height, branching, and sexual organ development in maize (Zea mays). We identified the molecular basis of the nana plant2 (na2) phenotype as a loss-of-function mutation in one of the two maize paralogs of the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) BR biosynthetic gene DWARF1 (DWF1). These mutants accumulate the DWF1 substrate 24-methylenecholesterol and exhibit decreased levels of downstream BR metabolites. We utilized this mutant and known GA biosynthetic mutants to investigate the genetic interactions between BR and GA. Double mutants exhibited additivity for some phenotypes and epistasis for others with no unifying pattern, indicating that BR and GA interact to affect development but in a context-dependent manner. Similar results were observed in double mutant analyses using additional BR and GA biosynthetic mutant loci. Thus, the BR and GA interactions were neither locus nor allele specific. Exogenous application of GA3 to na2 and d5, a GA biosynthetic mutant, also resulted in a diverse pattern of growth responses, including BR-dependent GA responses. These findings demonstrate that BR and GA do not interact via a single inclusive pathway in maize but rather suggest that differential signal transduction and downstream responses are affected dependent upon the developmental context.

Brassinosteroids (BRs) are important regulators that control myriad aspects of plant growth and development, including biotic and abiotic stress responses, such that modulating BR homeostasis and signaling presents abundant opportunities for plant breeding and crop improvement. Enzymes and other proteins involved in the biosynthesis and signaling of BRs are well understood from molecular genetics and phenotypic analysis in Arabidopsis thaliana; however, knowledge of the molecular functions of these genes in other plant species, especially cereal crop plants, is minimal. In this manuscript, we comprehensively review functional studies of BR genes in Arabidopsis, maize, rice, Setaria, Brachypodium, and soybean to identify conserved and diversified functions across plant species and to highlight cases for which additional research is in order. We performed phylogenetic analysis of gene families involved in the biosynthesis and signaling of BRs and re-analyzed publicly available transcriptomic data. Gene trees coupled with expression data provide a valuable guide to supplement future research on BRs in these important crop species, enabling researchers to identify gene-editing targets for BR-related functional studies.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the intrasession-, intersession-, and interrater reliability of a vernier caliper measurement of mandible movements. The authors calculated the intrasession, intersession-, and interrater reliability using a plastic caliper for important mandibular parameters. All intraclass-correlation-coefficients (ICC) are at least moderately accurate, especially the values for intrasession- and intersession reliability, which were excellent. Only the interrater reliability shows greater fluctuations. Whereas the mouth opening, protrusion, and the tooth positions are reliably correct, the same was not applicable to the side movements. The lateral movement measurements were highly variable. This did not apply to other movements. Patient compliance is important along with a different mouth-opening angle. It is possible to generate a variable laterotrusion to both sides. The caliper investigated is a fast, simple, and inexpensive tool for daily work.

The developmental genetics of reproductive structure control in maize must consider both the staminate florets of the tassel and the pistillate florets of the ear synflorescences. Pistil abortion takes place in the tassel florets, and stamen arrest is affected in ear florets to give rise to the monoecious nature of maize. Gibberellin (GA) deficiency results in increased tillering, a dwarfed plant syndrome, and the retention of anthers in the ear florets of maize. The silkless1 mutant results in suppression of silks in the ear. We demonstrate in this study that jasmonic acid (JA) and GA act independently and show additive phenotypes resulting in androecious dwarf1;silkless1 double mutant plants. The persistence of pistils in the tassel can be induced by multiple mechanisms, including JA deficiency, GA excess, genetic control of floral determinacy, and organ identity. The silkless1 mutant can suppress both silks in the ear and the silks in the tassel of JA-deficient and AP2 transcription factor tasselseed mutants. We previously demonstrated that GA production was required for brassinosteroid (BR) deficiency to affect persistence of pistils in the tassel. We find that BR deficiency affects pistil persistence by an independent mechanism from the silkless1 mutant and JA pathway. The silkless1 mutant did not prevent the formation of pistils in the tassel by nana plant2 in double mutants. In addition, we demonstrate that there is more to the silkless1 mutant than just a suppression of pistil growth. We document novel phenotypes of silkless1 mutants including weakly penetrant ear fasciation and anther persistence in the ear florets. Thus, the JA/AP2 mechanism of pistil retention in the tassel and silk growth in the ear are similarly sensitive to loss of the SILKLESS1 protein, while the BR/GA mechanism is not.

BACKGROUND: This article provides a summary of the state of knowledge on the sport-specific use of a kinesiotape intervention for neck pain caused by the postural or sitting position in cycling. This review summarises the research literature on the effectiveness of kinesiotape (KTA) on pain perception, pressure pain threshold (PPT) and range of motion (ROM) in the neck muscles and trapezius muscle. The focus was specifically on studies in cycling. METHODS: The literature search was conducted in the PubMed and Google Scholar databases. The search terms used in combination were "kinesiotape" and "back pain", "neck pain", "kinesiotape" and "trapezius muscle", and "kinesiotape" and "cycling". RESULTS: In total, the combination of keywords returned 892 results. Of these, the Powered by Editorial Manager and ProduXion Manager from Aries Systems Corporation search in the online database of PubMed returned 192 results and the search in the online database of Google Scholar returned 700 results. 874 publications were discarded due to a lack of specificity and a field of application that did not meet the requirements. Three additional studies were eliminated as "duplicate". Fifteen studies met the inclusion criteria. These were analysed in terms of content and in detail. Only one publication deals with the problem of mechanically induced neck pain during cycling. The effect of the kinesiotape refers to a reduction in pain perception and maintenance of the cervical range of motion. CONCLUSION: Numerous studies deal with the problem of pain conditions and how these can be counteracted with the help of an appropriate KTA. BACKGROUND: One-third of all persons with peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) suffer from intermittent claudication. Exercise training under appropriate supervision is recommended in the pertinent guidelines, but physicians order it too rarely, and so-called vascular exercise groups are not available everywhere. This situation needs improvement in view of the impor - tance of walking ability and cardiorespiratory fitness for patients' quality of life and long-term disease outcome. METHODS: We review the scientific evidence on exercise training and on ways to lower barriers to the ordering of exercise training and to patient participation, on the basis of pertinent articles retrieved by a search of PubMed and in specialized sports science journals. RESULTS: 10 meta-analyses, 12 randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and 7 cohort studies were considered for this review. Largescale cohort studies have shown that exercise is associated with a lower risk of death (relative risk 0.65-0.78 after 12 months of exercise training, compared to an inactive lifestyle). Exercise training also improves the maximal walking distance by a mean of 136 m (training at home) or 180-310 m (supervised training). An additional improvement by a mean of 282 m can be expected from a combination of exercise training and endovascular revascularization. Further behavior-modifying interventions, such as goal-setting, planning, and feedback, increase both the maximum walking distance and the weekly duration of exercise. CONCLUSION: Exercise improves walking ability and lowers mortality. To attract patients with intermittent claudication to exercise training, a broad assortment of analog, digital and telemetric tools and a dense network of vascular exercise groups should be made available, along with regular contact between physicians and patients.

Forward genetics is used to identify the genetic basis for a phenotype. The approach involves identifying a mutant organism exhibiting a phenotype of interest and then mapping the causative locus or gene. Bulked-segregant analysis (BSA) is a quick and effective approach to map mutants using pools of mutants and wild-type plants from a segregating population to identify linkage of the mutant phenotype, and this approach has been successfully used in plants. Traditional linkage mapping approaches are outdated and time intensive, and can be very difficult. With the highly evolved development and reduction in cost of high-throughput sequencing, this new approach combined with BSA has become extremely effective in multiple plant species, including Zea mays (maize). While the approach is incredibly powerful, careful experimental design, bioinformatic mapping techniques, and interpretation of results are important to obtain the desired results in an effective and timely manner. Poor design of a mapping population, limitations in bioinformatic experience, and inadequate understanding of sequence data are limitations of these approaches for the researcher. Here, we describe a straightforward protocol for mapping mutations responsible for a phenotype of interest in maize, using high-throughput sequencing and BSA. Specifically, we discuss relevant aspects of developing a mutant mapping population. This is followed by a detailed protocol for DNA preparation and analysis of short-read sequences to map and identify candidate causative mutations responsible for the mutant phenotype of interest. We provide command-line and perl scripts to complete the bioinformatic analysis of the mutant sequence data. This protocol lays out the design of the BSA, bioinformatic approaches, and interpreting the sequencing data. These methods are very adaptable to any forward genetics experiment and provide a step-by-step approach to identifying the genetic basis of a maize mutant phenotype. © 2022 The Authors. RESUMO

Physiotherapy is mentioned as an adjunctive treatment to improve the symptoms of cervical dystonia in terms of pain, function and quality of life. However, botulinum neurotoxin injection remains the treatment of choice. This systematic review emphasizes physical therapy and evaluates it by including six studies. The methodology is based on a previous systematic review on this topic to provide better comparability and actuality. For this purpose, two databases were searched using the previously published keywords. This time, only randomised controlled trials were evaluated to increase the power. In conclusion, additional physical therapy and active home exercise programs appear to be useful. Further research should focus on the dose-response principle to emphasize physical therapy treatment modalities.

OBJECTIVE: The function of the coracoacromial ligament (CAL) in superior shoulder stability has been well established, and the release of the CAL with the Latarjet procedure leads to increased superior humeral translation. A surgical technique was developed recently to reconstruct the CAL during a modified Latarjet procedure, and the clinical outcome of this technique at medium-term follow-up is yet to be determined. METHODS: Twenty-six patients with chronic post-traumatic anterior shoulder instability were included in this retrospective case-control study. Patients in group 1 (n = 12) were surgically treated with the classic congruent-arc Latarjet, where the CAL is sacrificed. In group 2 (n = 14), the CAL was reconstructed using a pectoralis minor fascia flap (PMFF). Primary outcomes were the return to sports activity and functional assessment based on the Western Ontario Shoulder Instability Index (WOSI) and the Constant Score (CS) at minimum 5 years follow-up. Patient's demographics, sport activities, duration of surgery, the rate of recurrent dislocations, and specific complications related to the surgical technique were recorded as secondary variables. RESULTS: There was a decrease of the WOSI in both groups, indicating a decrease of symptoms at follow-up compared to the preoperative level. There was no statistically significant difference between groups 1 and 2 for the total WOSI as well as for all subscales. There was an increase of the CS in both groups in all four items at follow-up compared to preoperatively, indicating an increase in shoulder function at follow-up. There was a statistically significant difference between groups 1 and 2 for the total CS, as well as for the items power, mobility, and activity, but not for pain. Most patients (n = 20) returned to their preoperative sports activity, 13 at the same level. However, seven patients who used to perform their sports competitively chose to perform their activity at a noncompetitive level after the Latarjet procedure. All were younger than 35 years of age. Six patients did not return to their preoperative sports activity. All except one were over 35 years of age. The duration of surgery ranged from 75 to 125 minutes with a mean ± SD of 94.23 ± 15.06 minutes for both groups with no significant difference between the groups (p = 0.117). None of the patients had intra- or postoperative complications related to the surgical procedure. Especially, no patient had recurrent dislocations of the affected shoulder following the Latarjet procedure. CONCLUSION: The use of a PMFF is a safe technique for reconstruction of the CAL, which does not result in a longer surgery time or higher rate of complications. The reconstruction of the CAL during the modified Latarjet procedure may lead to better functional results in medium-term follow-up.

INTRODUCTION: The Latarjet procedure is an attractive surgical option for the management of chronic anterior shoulder instability. The original surgical approach involves the vertical tenotomy of the subscapularis tendon. Alternatively, the subscapularis muscle is split longitudinally and the tendon left attached at the lesser tuberosity. HYPOTHESIS: The hypothesis is that the longitudinal split is of functional advantage and may lead to better functional results and earlier return to sports activities compared to the vertical tenotomy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-two patients were included in this retrospective cohort study. In 14 patients, the subscapularis tendon was vertically incised (group A), whereas in 18 patients, the subscapularis muscle was split longitudinally (group B). Patients were evaluated at 1 year (FU1) and 2 years (FU2) after the Latarjet procedure. Results at follow-up were correlated with patient-specific data and compared with the preoperative status. Primary outcomes were the functional assessment based on Western Ontario Shoulder Instability (WOSI) index and Constant Score (CS) and the assessment of the return to sports activity. Patients' demographics, duration of surgery, and the rate of recurrent dislocations were recorded as secondary variables. RESULTS: All patients started their sports activities with a mean±SD of 12.41±1.24 weeks. Interestingly, the time from surgery to full recovery of sports activities was significantly longer for group A (mean±SD of 30.17±10.36 weeks) compared to group B (mean±SD of 20.71±3.67 weeks). There is a statistically significant decrease of the WOSI score from the preoperative level compared to FU1 and FU2, indicating a decrease in instability related symptoms during the entire follow up period with no statistically significant difference between group A and B. There is an increase in shoulder function during the entire follow up period based on the CS. Most interestingly, there is a statistically significant difference between group A and B at FU1, indicating a significantly better shoulder function for group B at the early follow up timepoint (FU1). At the later follow up timepoint (FU2), no difference exists in the individual items. However, a significantly better total CS remains in group B, indicating an overall improved function compared to group A. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: The longitudinal split of subscapularis muscle is a safe approach which leads to quicker functional recovery and return to sports activity compared to the vertical tenotomy, which is a benefit especially for active individuals. It is therefore recommended as the standard surgical approach. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: III; Retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In COVID-19 survivors a relatively high number of long-term symptoms have been observed. Besides impact on quality of life, these symptoms (now called Post-COVID-Syndrome) may have an impact on functioning and may also hinder to participation in social life in affected people. However, little is known about developing such syndrome a for patients with mild and moderate COVID-19 who did not need hospitalization or intensive care. METHODS: A cross-sectional study in 1027 patients with mild or moderate COVID-19 was performed in two communities in Bavaria, Germany. The Rehabilitation-Needs-Survey (RehabNeS) including the Short Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36) on health-related quality of life, was used. Descriptive statistics were calculated. RESULTS: In all, 97.5% of patients reported one symptom in the infection stage, such as fatigue, respiratory problems, limitations of the senses of taste and smell, fear and anxiety and other symptoms. In this time period, 84.1% of the participants experienced activity limitations and participation restrictions such as carrying out daily routines, handling stress, getting household tasks done, caring for/supporting others, and relaxing and leisure concerns. In all, 61.9% of participants reported persisting symptoms more than 3 months after infection. These were fatigue, sleep disturbances, respiratory problems, pain, fear and anxiety, and restrictions in movement; 49% of the participants reported activity limitations and participation restrictions. Predominately, these were handling stress, carrying out daily routines, looking after one's health, relaxing and leisure activities and doing house work. The impacts on quality of life and vocational performance were rather low. CONCLUSION: The results show that long-term symptoms after mild and moderate COVID-19 are common and lead to limitations of activities and participation. However, it seems that in most cases they are not severe and do not lead to frequent or serious issues with quality of life or work ability.
