Electrolyte plays a crucial role in ensuring stable operation of lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Localized high-concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) have the potential to form a robust solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) and mitigate Li dendrite growth, making them a highly promising electrolyte option. However, the principles governing the selection of diluents, a crucial component in LHCE, have not been clearly determined, hampering the advancement of such a type of electrolyte systems. Herein, the diluents from the perspective of molecular polarity are rationally designed and developed. A moderately fluorinated solvent, 1-(1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethoxy)propane (TNE), is employed as a diluent to create a novel LHCE. The unique molecular structure of TNE enhances the intrinsic dipole moment, thereby altering solvent interactions and the coordination environment of Li-ions in LHCE. The achieved solvation structure not only enhances the bulk properties of LHCE, but also facilitates the formation of more stable anion-derived SEIs featured with a higher proportion of inorganic species. Consequently, the corresponding full cells of both Li||LiFePO4 and Li||LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cells utilizing Li thin-film anodes exhibit extended long-term stability with significantly improved average Coulombic efficiency. This work offers new insights into the functions of diluents in LHCEs and provides direction for further optimizing the LHCEs for LMBs.

Drought and flooding are the two most important environmental factors limiting maize (Zea mays L.) production globally. This study aimed to investigate the physiological mechanisms and accurate evaluation indicators and methods of maize germplasm involved in drought and flooding stresses. The twice replicated pot experiments with 60 varieties, combined with the field validation experiment with 3 varieties, were conducted under well-watered, drought, and flooding conditions. Most varieties exhibited stronger tolerance to drought than flooding due to higher antioxidant enzyme activities, osmotic adjustment substances, and lower reactive oxygen species. In contrast, flooding stress resulted in higher levels of reactive oxygen species (particularly O2-), ascorbate peroxidase, catalase, peroxidase, and soluble sugars but lower levels of superoxide dismutase, proline, and soluble protein compared with well-watered conditions. Superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, proline, soluble sugars, and protein contents, in addition to plant height, leaf area/plant, and stem diameter, were accurate and representative indicators for evaluating maize tolerance to drought and flooding stresses and could determine a relatively high mean forecast accuracy of 100.0% for the comprehensive evaluation value. A total of 4 principal components were extracted, in which different principal components played a vital role in resisting different water stresses. Finally, the accuracy of the 3 varieties screened by multivariate analysis was verified in the field. This study provides insights into the different physiological mechanisms and accurate evaluation methods of maize germplasm involved in drought and flooding stresses, which could be valuable for further research and breeding.

Specific biomarker-activatable probes have revolutionized theranostics, being beneficial for precision medicine. Hypoxia is a critical pathological characteristic prevalent in numerous major diseases such as cancers, cardiovascular disorders, inflammatory diseases, and acute ischemia. Aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) have emerged as a promising tool to tackle the biomedical issues. Of particular significance are the hypoxia-responsive AIEgens, representing a kind of crucial probe capable of delicately sensing and responding to the hypoxic microenvironment, thereby enhancing the precision of disease diagnosis and treatment. In this review, we summarize the recent advances of hypoxia-responsive AIEgens for varied biomedical applications. The hypoxia-responsive structures based on AIEgens, such as azobenzene, nitrobenzene, and N-oxide are presented, which are in response to the reduction property to bring about significant alternations in response spectra and/or fluorescence intensity. The bioapplications including imaging and therapy of tumor and ischemia diseases are discussed. Moreover, the review sheds light on the future challenges and prospects in this field. This review aims to provide comprehensive guidance and understanding into the development of activatable bioprobes, especially the hypoxia-responsive AIEgens for improving the diagnosis and therapy outcome of related diseases.

Gray mold caused by Botrytis cinerea severely threatens the yield of ginseng (Panax ginseng). Various categories of fungicides have been utilized to control gray mold on this crop. In this study, the resistance of 102 isolates of B. cinerea from 11 commercial ginseng-growing regions in China to fungicides was examined. A total of 32.4% were resistant to boscalid, with EC50 values that ranged from 12.26 to 235.87 µg/ml, and 94.1% were resistant to pyraclostrobin, with EC50 values that ranged from 5.88 to 487.72 µg/ml. Except for sdhA and sdhD, the amino acid substitutions of P225F, P225L, N230I, H272Y, and H272R in the sdhB subunit from 24 (4 sensitive [S] and 20 resistant [R]), 5 (1 S and 4 R), 1 (S), 1 (R), and 8 (4 S and 4 R) strains, respectively, and the concurrent amino acid substitutions of G85A + I93V + M158V + V168I in the sdhC subunit from 5 (4 S and 1 R) strains were identified. A G143A substitution in cytochrome b was identified in 96 isolates that were resistant to pyraclostrobin and three that were sensitive to it. The Bcbi-143/144 intron was identified in the other three isolates sensitive to pyraclostrobin, but it was absent in the isolates that harbored the G143A mutation. The results showed that the populations of B. cinerea on ginseng have developed strong resistance to pyraclostrobin. Therefore, it is not recommended to continue using this fungicide to control gray mold on P. ginseng. Boscalid is still effective against most isolates. However, to prevent fungicide resistance, it is recommended to use a mixture of boscalid with other categories of fungicides.

Lithium metal deposition is strongly affected by the intrinsic properties of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) and working electrolyte, but a relevant understanding is far from complete. Here, by employing multiple electrochemical techniques and the design of SEI and electrolyte, we elucidate the electrochemistry of Li deposition under mass transport control. It is discovered that SEIs with a lower Li ion transference number and/or conductivity induce a distinctive current transition even under moderate potentiostatic polarization, which is associated with the control regime transition of Li ion transport from the SEI to the electrolyte. Furthermore, our findings help reveal the creation of a space-charge layer at the electrode/SEI interface due to the involvement of the diffusion process of Li ions through the SEI, which promotes the formation of dendrite embryos that develop and eventually trigger SEI breakage and the control regime transition of Li ion transport. Our insight into the very initial dendritic growth mechanism offers a bridge toward design and control for superior SEIs.

In the pursuit of a highly reversible lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) battery, control of reaction sites to maintain stable conversion between O2 and Li2O2 at the cathode side is imperatively desirable. However, the mechanism involving the reaction site during charging remains elusive, which, in turn, imposes challenges in recognition of the origin of overpotential. Herein, via combined investigations by in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), we propose a universal morphology-dictated mechanism of efficient reaction sites for Li2O2 decomposition. It is found that Li2O2 deposits with different morphologies share similar localized conductivities, much higher than that reported for bulk Li2O2, enabling the reaction site not only at the electrode/Li2O2/electrolyte interface but also at the Li2O2/electrolyte interface. However, while the mass transport process is more enhanced at the former, the charge-transfer resistance at the latter is sensitively related to the surface structure and thus the reactivity of the Li2O2 deposit. Consequently, for compact disk-like deposits, the electrode/Li2O2/electrolyte interface serves as the dominant decomposition site, which causes premature departure of Li2O2 and loss of reversibility; on the contrary, for porous flower-like and film-like Li2O2 deposits bearing a larger surface area and richer surface-active structures, both the interfaces are efficient for decomposition without premature departure of the deposit so that the overpotential arises primarily from the sluggish oxidation kinetics and the decomposition is more reversible. The present work provides instructive insights into the understanding of the mechanism of reaction sites during the charge process, which offers guidance for the design of reversible Li-O2 batteries.

Accurate control of charge transfer is crucial to investigate the catalytic reaction mechanism of the biological oxidation process that biomedicine participates in. Herein, we have established an assembly model of metalloporphyrin framework (MPF) nanosheets as the active centers of biological enzymes. The introduction of Vitamin C (VC) into the MPF system can precisely modulate its content of charges. The surface-enhanced Raman scattering activity and peroxidase-like catalytic performance are enhanced simultaneously for the first time by manipulating the optimal molar ratio of an MPF to VC and the reaction sequence with target model molecules. We have confirmed that the formation of the intermediate of Fe(2+)-OOH species is specifically enhanced after VC modulation, which indicates that VC can regulate the oxidative stress of the active center of biological enzymes. This discovery not only accurately resolves the mechanism of VC-selective anticancer therapy but also has important significance for the precise treatment of VC synergistic targeting medicines.

AIMS: Dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) remains the standard of care. CYP2C19 genetic polymorphisms cause variable clopidogrel bioactivation. Increased function (CYP2C19*17) allele carriers (rapid metabolizers [RM] or ultrarapid metabolizers [UM]) are clopidogrel hyper-responders, hence are more susceptible to clopidogrel-related bleeding. Since current guidelines recommend against routine genotyping following PCI, data on the clinical utility of CYP2C19*17 genotype guided strategy are sparce. Our study provides real-world data on the 12-month follow-up of CYP2C19 genotyping in patients post-PCI. METHODS: This is a cohort study within an Irish population receiving 12-month DAPT following PCI. It identifies the prevalence of CYP2C19 polymorphisms within an Irish population and describes the ischaemic and bleeding outcomes after 12 months of DAPT. RESULTS: A total of 129 patients were included with the following CYP2C19 polymorphism prevalence: 30.2% hyper-responders (26.4% RM [1*/17*], 3.9% UM [17*/17*]) and 28.7% poor-responders (22.5% IM [1*/2*], 3.9% IM [2*/17*], 2.3% PM [2*/2*]). A total of 53 and 76 patients received clopidogrel and ticagrelor, respectively. At 12 months, total bleeding incidence within the clopidogrel group was positively correlated with CYP2C19 activity: IM/PM (0.0%), NM (15.0%) and RM/UM (25.0%). The positive relationship showed a moderate association that was statistically significant: rτ = 0.28, P = 0.035. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of CYP2C19 polymorphisms in Ireland is 58.9% (30.2% CYP2C19*17, 28.7% CYP2C19*2) with an approximately one in three chance of being a clopidogrel hyper-responder. Positive correlation between bleeding and increasing CYP2C19 activity within the clopidogrel group (n = 53) suggests possible clinical utility of a genotype-guided strategy identifying high bleeding risk with clopidogrel in CYP2C19*17 carriers, but further studies are required.

BACKGROUND: Mild cellular atypia of esophageal squamous epithelial dysplasia has a risk of progressing to cancer that poses great confusion for pathological diagnosis. There is no research on the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of esophageal squamous dysplasia by the expression of immunohistochemical (IHC) p53. The study aims to conduct a graded diagnosis of esophageal squamous epithelial hyperplasia by combining p53 expressions and microscopic histomorphological characteristics. METHODS: The study was conducted from January 2021 to January 2022 and included a total of 208 cases including 262 specimens with atypical hyperplasia or dysplasia of squamous epithelia discovered by esophageal mucosal biopsy. HE staining was used to grade the epithelial hyperplasia degree, and all cases underwent p53 IHC evaluation. RESULTS: Benign lesions: we did not find any p53 IHC mutant-phenotype (0/12 cases) in 12 cases of esophagitis. We found 10 cases (10/80 cases) of p53 IHC mutant-phenotype in 80 cases of low-grade dysplasia, and 158 cases (158/170 cases) of p53 IHC mutant-phenotype of high-grade lesions in 170 cases of high-grade dysplasia and early cancer based on the χ2 test results. We found statistically significant differences in p53 IHC mutant-phenotype between the high-grade squamous epithelial lesions and benign lesions. The sensitivity and specificity of p53 in detecting high-grade squamous epithelial lesions were 92.9% and 89.1%, respectively. The positive predictive value was 94.0%, and the negative predictive value was 87.2%. CONCLUSION: In this study, we found that p53 IHC had high sensitivity and specificity in detecting high-grade esophageal squamous epithelial lesions. Therefore, it has potential to be used as a routine item in pathological detection for auxiliary risk stratification of esophageal squamous epithelial lesions.

BACKGROUND: Osteosarcoma (OS) immune environment is complexed and the immune factors-related to OS progression need to be explored. Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are regarded as immune suppressive and tumor-promoting cells. However, the underlying mechanisms through which TAMs function are still fragmentary. Here, we aim to explore the underlying mechanisms by which TAMs regulate OS progression. METHODS: TAMs from OS tissues were isolated by flow cytometry. Exosomes derived from TAMs were separated using ultracentrifugation and western blotting. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and flow cytometry were constructed to characterize TAMs-derived exosomes. Additionally, the differential MicroRNAs (miRNAs) and genes were detected through RNA sequencing, and further validated using real-time PCR (RT-PCR). OS cell metastasis ability was assessed using transwell invasion and scratch wound healing assays. MiRNAs mimic and lentiviral vectors were utilized to explore the effects on OS progression. RESULTS: Exosome secreted by TAMs accelerated the OS metastasis. Let-7a level was upregulated in TAMs derived exosomes, which downregulated C15orf41 by targeting 3'-untranslated region (UTR). Furthermore, overexpressing let-7a enhanced invasion and migration by blocking the transcription of C15orf41. In consistent, up-regulating let-7a promoted OS progression and made the prognosis to be worse, which can be reversed by C15orf41 overexpression. CONCLUSION: This study highlighted the critical role of TAMs-derived exosomes in OS progression and explored the potential value of the let-7a/C15orf41 axis as an indicator or target for OS.

Oxide heterointerfaces with high carrier density can interact strongly with the lattice phonons, generating considerable plasmon-phonon coupling and thereby perturbing the fascinating optical and electronic properties, such as two-dimensional electron gas, ferromagnetism, and superconductivity. Here we use infrared-spectroscopic nanoimaging based on scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) to quantify the interaction of electron-phonon coupling and the spatial distribution of local charge carriers at the SrTiO3/TiO2 interface. We found an increased high-frequency dielectric constant (ε∞ = 7.1-9.0) and charge carrier density (n = 6.5 × 1019 to 1.5 × 1020 cm-3) near the heterointerface. Moreover, quantitative information between the charge carrier density and extension thickness across the heterointerface has been extracted by monochromatic near-field imaging. A direct evaluation of the relationship between the thickness and the interaction of charge carrier-phonon coupling of the heterointerface would provide valuable information for the development of oxide-based electronic devices.

A novel fungal immunomodulatory protein (FIP), identified as FIP-hma, was discovered in the genome of an edible mushroom Hypsizygus marmoreus. Bioinformatics analysis suggested FIP-hma contained the cerato-platanin (CP) conserved domain and was categorized into Cerato-type FIP. In phylogenetic analysis, FIP-hma was clustered into a new branch of the FIP family, displaying large system divergence from most of the other FIPs. The higher gene expression of FIP-hma was observed during the vegetative growth stages than that during the reproductive growth stages. In addition, the cDNA sequence of FIP-hma was cloned and successfully expressed in Escherichia coli (E. coli) BL21(DE3). The recombinant protein of FIP-hma (rFIP-hma) was neatly purified and isolated by Ni-NTA and SUMO-Protease. The iNOS, IL-6, IL-1ß, and TNF-α levels of RAW 264.7 macrophages were upregulated by rFIP-hma, indicating its activation of an immune response by regulating central cytokines. No cytotoxic effects were observed in an MTT test. The findings of this work discovered a novel immunoregulatory protein from H. marmoreus, provided a systematic bioinformatic profile, suggested an effective approach for its heterologous recombinant production, and reported its potent immunoregulatory activity in macrophages. This study sheds light on the physiological function research of FIPs and their further industrial utilization.

Traditional coupling of ligands for gold wet etching makes large-scale applications problematic. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are a new class of environment-friendly solvents, which could possibly overcome the shortcomings. In this work, the effect of water content on the Au anodic process in DES ethaline was investigated by combining linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Meanwhile, we employed atomic force microscopy (AFM) to image the evolution of the surface morphology of the Au electrode during its dissolution and passivation process. The obtained AFM data help to explain the observations about the effect of water content on the Au anodic process from the microscopic perspective. High water contents make the occurrence of anodic dissolution of gold at higher potential, but enhances the rate of the electron transfer and gold dissolution. AFM results reveal the occurrence of massive exfoliation, which confirms that the gold dissolution reaction is more violent in ethaline with higher water contents. In addition, AFM results illustrate that the passive film and its average roughness could be tailored by changing the water content of ethaline.

Inflammasome involvement in Parkinson's disease (PD) has been intensively investigated. Absent in melanoma 2 (AIM2) is an essential inflammasome protein known to contribute to the development of several neurological diseases. However, a specific role for AIM2 in PD has not been reported. In this study, we investigated the effect of AIM2 in the N-methyl-4-phenyl-1, 2, 3, 6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-induced PD model by use of various knockout and bone marrow chimeric mice. The mechanism of action for AIM2 in PD was assessed by RNA-sequencing and in vitro primary microglial transfection. Results were validated in the A30P transgenic mouse model of PD. In the MPTP mouse model, AIM2 activation was found to negatively regulate neuro-inflammation independent of the inflammasome. Microglial AIM2 deficiency exacerbated behavioral and pathological features of both MPTP-induced and transgenic PD mouse models. Mechanistically, AIM2 reduced cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS)-mediated antiviral-related inflammation by inhibition of AKT-interferon regulatory factor 3 (IRF3) phosphorylation. These results demonstrate microglial AIM2 to inhibit the antiviral-related neuro-inflammation associated with PD and provide for a foundation upon which to identify new therapeutic targets for treatment of the disease.

Copper is the most widely used substrate for Li deposition and dissolution in lithium metal anodes, which is complicated by the formation of solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs), whose physical and chemical properties can affect Li deposition and dissolution significantly. However, initial Li nucleation and growth on bare Cu creates Li nuclei that only partially cover the Cu surface so that SEI formation could proceed not only on Li nuclei but also on the bare region of the Cu surface with different kinetics, which may affect the follow-up processes distinctively. In this paper, we employ in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM), together with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), to investigate how SEIs formed on a Cu surface, without Li participation, and on the surface of growing Li nuclei, with Li participation, affect the components and structures of the SEIs, and how the formation sequence of the two kinds of SEIs, along with Li deposition, affect subsequent dissolution and re-deposition processes in a pyrrolidinium-based ionic liquid electrolyte containing a small amount of water. Nanoscale in situ AFM observations show that sphere-like Li deposits may have differently conditioned SEI-shells, depending on whether Li nucleation is preceded by the formation of the SEI on Cu. Models of integrated-SEI shells and segmented-SEI shells are proposed to describe SEI shells formed on Li nuclei and SEI shells sequentially formed on Cu and then on Li nuclei, respectively. "Top-dissolution" is observed for both types of shelled Li deposits, but the integrated-SEI shells only show wrinkles, which can be recovered upon Li re-deposition, while the segmented-SEI shells are apparently top-opened due to mechanical stresses introduced at the junctions of the top regions and become "dead" SEIs, which forces subsequent Li nucleation and growth in the interstice of the dead SEIs. Our work provides insights into the impact mechanism of SEIs on the initial stage Li deposition and dissolution on foreign substrates, revealing that SEIs could be more influential on Li dissolution and that the spatial integration of SEI shells on Li deposits is important to improving the reversibility of deposition and dissolution cycling.

Sepsis remains one of the leading causes of death globally, in spite of advanced developments in intensive care and better understandings of pathophysiology related to sepsis. There is no special treatment or drug available for sepsis, currently. Under normal circumstances, neutrophil is a major player in acute infection control. However, during sepsis, the migration abilities and antimicrobial functions of neutrophils are impaired, resulting in a dysregulated immune response. Recent studies have indeed demonstrated that blocking or reversing neutrophil migration and impaired antibacterial function can improve the outcomes in septic animal models. This article systemically synthesized information regarding related factors and signaling involved in the functions of neutrophils in sepsis. This review also discussed the possibility that neutrophils be used as a marker for specific diagnosis and/or prediction of the outcomes of sepsis.

BACKGROUND: Panic disorder (PD) is thought to be related with deficits in emotion regulation, especially in cognitive reappraisal. According to the cognitive model, PD patients' intrinsic and unconscious misappraisal strategies are the cause of panic attacks. However, no studies have yet been performed to explore the underlying neuromechanism of cognitive reappraisal that occur on an unconscious level in PD patients. METHODS: Twenty-six patients with PD and 25 healthy controls (HC) performed a fully-verified event-block design emotional regulation task aimed at investigating responses of implicit cognitive reappraisal during an fMRI scan. Participants passively viewed negatively valanced pictures that were beforehand neutrally, positively, or adversely portrayed in the task. RESULTS: Whole-brain analysis of fMRI data showed that PD patients exhibited less activation in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) and right dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) compared to HC, but presented greater activation in parietal cortex when negative pictures were preceded by positive/neutral vs negative descriptions. Simultaneously, interactive effects of Group × Condition were observed in the right amygdala across both groups. Furthermore, activation in dlPFC and dmPFC was is negatively correlated to severity of anxiety and panic in PD when negative images were preceded by non-negative vs negative descriptions. CONCLUSIONS: Emotional dysregulation in PD is likely the result of deficient activation in dlPFC and dmPFC during implicit cognitive reappraisal, in line with impaired automatic top-down regulation. Correlations between severity of anxiety and panic attack and activation of right dlPFC and dmPFC suggest that the failure to engage prefrontal region during implicit cognitive reappraisal might be associated wtih the severity of anxiety and panic; such functional patterns might be the target of possible treatments.

Mild encephalitis/encephalopathy with a reversible splenial lesion (MERS) is a clinicoradiologic syndrome typically characterized by transient mild encephalitis or encephalopathy with reversible lesions being found in the splenium of corpus callosum (SCC) by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A variety of pathogens including influenza virus, rotavirus, and adenovirus associated with MERS have been reported. However, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)-related MERS is relatively rare in infants. In this study, we report two Chinese infants who suffered from RSV-related MERS. Both infants manifested as fever, seizure, and altered states of consciousness with confirmed detections of RSV-RNA in the specimens from throat swab. Clinical symptoms/signs such as apnea and shallow breathing were also noted in these two infants. Furthermore, brain MRI images indicated reversible isolated lesions with transiently reduced diffusion in the SCC. Fortunately, both of these two infants recovered completely following treatment within a month. Our study suggests that RSV may serve as a novel causative agent for MERS in infants. Clinicians should focus more attention on RSV-related MERS in infants in order to improve early accurate diagnosis and therapeutic decision making.

Herein, we successfully developed a new multifunctional antibacterial system, which combined mechano-bactericidal (Au-nanostars) and photothermal (MoS2) mechanism. Meanwhile, the targeting molecule of vancomycin was modified on the surface of MoS2-Au nanocomposites (Van-MoS2-Au), that generally yield high efficiency in antibacterial performance due to their effective working radii. Van-MoS2-Au nanocomposites were capable of completely destroying both gram-negative (E. coli) and gram-positive (B. subtilis) bacteria under 808 NIR laser irradiation for 20 min, and nearly no bacterial growth was detected after 12 h incubation. Moreover, these nanocomposites could destruct the refractory biofilm as well, which was a much more difficult medical challenge. The new antibacterial nanomaterials might offer many biomedical applications because of the biocompatibility and strong antibacterial ability.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the correlation between clinical spectrum and therapeutic outcomes and neuropsychological deficits in children with status epilepticus during sleep (SES). METHODS: The clinical spectrum of patients with SES was defined as follows: status epilepticus of benign childhood epilepsy with centro-temporal spikes (SEBECTs), atypical benign focal epilepsy during childhood (ABFEC), non-idiopathic focal epilepsy (NIFE), and Landau-Kleffner syndrome (LKS). SES cases were divided into 4 groups according to neuropsychological findings before treatment: developmental delay/intellectual disability (DD/ID), cognitive impairment (CI), attention deficit and/or hyperactivity behaviors (AHD), and normal group (NG). The therapeutic outcomes were classified into 3 groups: satisfactory response, recurrence, and seizure control. RESULTS: A total of 39 cases (24 males and 15 females) were recruited, including 3 cases with SEBECTs, 26 with ABFEC, 8 with NIFE [2 with focal cortical dysplasia (FCD)], and 2 with LKS. There were 7 patients in the DD/ID group, 8 in the CI group, 19 in the AHD group, and 5 in the NG group. Neuropsychological outcomes were significantly different among clinical spectrum (P < 0.001), and neuropsychological deficits frequently occurred in the ABFEC group or in the NIFE group. Besides, 18 patients in the satisfactory group had satisfactory response to medicine or surgery (2 out of 18 cases with FCD), whereas recurrence was observed at least one session within one year in 16 cases in the recurrence group, and no improvement in spike-wave index and cognition/behavior was noted in 5 patients in the seizure control group, although seizure could be controlled. There were significant differences in therapeutic outcomes among clinical spectrum (P = 0.041), with the worst outcomes in the NIFE group (only 1 out of 8 with satisfactory good response). CONCLUSIONS: It is important to categorize patients with SES into epilepsy syndromes, including SEBECTs, ABFPEC, NIFE, and LKS; the clinical spectrum may be a significant determinant to influence the outcomes of SES, including neuropsychological deficits and therapeutic outcomes.
