Following invasion, insects can become adapted to conditions experienced in their invasive range, but there are few studies on the speed of adaptation and its genomic basis. Here, we examine a small insect pest, Thrips palmi, following its contemporary range expansion across a sharp climate gradient from the subtropics to temperate areas. We first found a geographically associated population genetic structure and inferred a stepping-stone dispersal pattern in this pest from the open fields of southern China to greenhouse environments of northern regions, with limited gene flow after colonization. In common garden experiments, both the field and greenhouse groups exhibited clinal patterns in thermal tolerance as measured by critical thermal maximum (CTmax) closely linked with latitude and temperature variables. A selection experiment reinforced the evolutionary potential of CTmax with an estimated h2 of 6.8% for the trait. We identified 3 inversions in the genome that were closely associated with CTmax, accounting for 49.9%, 19.6%, and 8.6% of the variance in CTmax among populations. Other genomic variations in CTmax outside the inversion region were specific to certain populations but functionally conserved. These findings highlight rapid adaptation to CTmax in both open field and greenhouse populations and reiterate the importance of inversions behaving as large-effect alleles in climate adaptation.

Rye (Secale cereale), a valuable relative of wheat, contains abundant powdery mildew resistance (Pm) genes. Using physical mapping, transcriptome sequencing, barley stripe mosaic virus-induced gene silencing, ethyl methane sulfonate mutagenesis, and stable transformation, we isolated and validated two coiled-coil, nucleotide-binding site and leucine-rich repeat (CC-NBS-LRR) alleles, PmTR1 and PmTR3, located on rye chromosome 6RS from different triticale lines. PmTR1 confers age-related resistance starting from the three-leaf stage, whereas its allele, PmTR3, confers typical all-stage resistance, which may be associated with their differential gene expression patterns. Overexpression in Nicotiana benthamiana showed that the CC, CC-NBS, and CC-LRR fragments of PMTR1 induce cell death, whereas in PMTR3 the CC and full-length fragments perform this function. Luciferase complementation imaging and pull-down assays revealed distinct interaction activities between the CC and NBS fragments. Our study elucidates two novel rye-derived Pm genes and their derivative germplasm resources and provides novel insights into the mechanism of age-related resistance, which can aid the improvement of resistance against wheat powdery mildew.

Background: Tesmin, a 60 kDa protein encoded by the metallothionein-like 5 (MTL5) gene, plays a vital role in spermatogenesis and oogenesis. Recent research has unveiled its potential involvement in malignancies, although its impact on HCC remains poorly understood. Methods: In this study, we sought to elucidate the clinical significance of tesmin in HCC patients. We investigated the relationship between tesmin expression and the prognosis of individuals with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), as well as its potential role in tumor proliferation and invasion. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was employed to assess the expression of tesmin in HCC tissues. Chi-square tests were conducted to analyze the correlation between tesmin expression and various clinicopathological features among HCC patients. For survival analysis, we employed the Kaplan-Meier method and conducted Cox regression analyses. To investigate the functional role of tesmin, we utilized shRNA constructs for transfection-mediated knockdown. Proliferation was assessed using the CCK-8 assay, and invasive capability was determined through Matrigel Transwell assays. Results: IHC results indicated that tesmin expression was prominently observed in cancerous tissue. Notably, we observed a significant association between tesmin expression and tumor stage and invasion in HCC patients from both our medical center and TCGA dataset. Survival analysis further revealed that tesmin expression emerged as an independent prognostic factor for overall survival among individuals with HCC. Furthermore, cellular experiments demonstrated that knockdown of tesmin led to decreased proliferation and invasion of HCC cells. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that tesmin may serve as a novel prognostic marker for HCC, highlighting its potential as a target for further research into HCC treatment. Additionally, the functional experiments support the notion that tesmin may participate in promoting the proliferation and invasion of HCC cells, warranting further investigations into its mechanistic involvement in HCC progression.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness is a negative emotional state that can lead to physical and mental health problems. This study's objective was to acquire an in-depth understanding of the heterogeneity and the predictors of loneliness among older adults in rural China and provide valuable references for practical interventions. METHODS: Older rural adults in China (N = 680) were recruited between January and April 2023. Latent profile analysis (LPA) was employed to identify subgroups of loneliness among participants. Single-factor and multinomial logistic regression analyses were conducted to investigate predictors of loneliness. RESULTS: The loneliness of rural older adults could be divided into three subgroups: low interaction loneliness group (55.0%), moderate emotional loneliness group (31.8%), and high loneliness group (13.2%). The subgroup predictors included age, gender, religious beliefs, marital status, living alone, number of chronic diseases, and smartphone use (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This study identified a classification pattern for loneliness among older adults in rural areas of China, revealed the characteristics of different demographic variables in loneliness categories, and highlighted the heterogeneity of loneliness in this population. It serves as a theoretical reference for formulating intervention plans aimed at addressing various loneliness categories for local rural older adults. AbstractThe movement of individuals through continuous space is typically constrained by dispersal ability and dispersal barriers. A range of approaches have been developed to investigate these. Kindisperse is a new approach that infers recent intergenerational dispersal (σ) from close kin dyads and appears particularly useful for investigating taxa that are difficult to observe individually. This study, focusing on the mosquito Aedes aegypti, shows how the same close kin data can also be used for barrier detection. We empirically demonstrate this new extension of the method using genome-wide sequence data from 266 Ae. aegypti. First, we use the spatial distribution of full-sib dyads collected within one generation to infer past movements of ovipositing female mosquitoes. These dyads indicated the relative barrier strengths of two roads and performed favorably against alternative genetic methods for detecting barriers. We then use Kindisperse to quantify recent intergenerational dispersal (σ=81.5-197.1 m generation-1/2) from the difference in variance between the sib and the first cousin spatial distributions and, from this, estimate effective population density (ρ=833-4,864 km-2). Dispersal estimates showed general agreement with those from mark-release-recapture studies. Barriers, σ, ρ, and neighborhood size (331-526) can inform forthcoming releases of dengue-suppressing Wolbachia bacteria into this mosquito population.

Adaptive evolution following colonization can affect the impact of invasive species. The fall webworm (FWW) invaded China 40 years ago through a single introduction event involving a severe bottleneck and subsequently diverged into two genetic groups. The well-recorded invasion history of FWW, coupled with a clear pattern of genetic divergence, provides an opportunity to investigate whether there is any sign of adaptive evolution following the invasion. Based on genome-wide SNPs, we identified genetically separated western and eastern groups of FWW and correlated spatial variation in SNPs with geographical and climatic factors. Geographical factors explained a similar proportion of the genetic variation across all populations compared with climatic factors. However, when the two population groups were analysed separately, environmental factors explained more variation than geographical factors. SNP outliers in populations of the western group had relatively stronger response to precipitation than temperature-related variables. Functional annotation of SNP outliers identified genes associated with insect cuticle protein potentially related to desiccation adaptation in the western group and genes associated with lipase biosynthesis potentially related to temperature adaptation in the eastern group. Our study suggests that invasive species may maintain the evolutionary potential to adapt to heterogeneous environments despite a single invasion event. The molecular data suggest that quantitative trait comparisons across environments would be worthwhile.

KEY MESSAGE: Novel wheat-rye 6RS small fragment translocation lines with powdery mildew resistance were developed, and the resistance gene PmW6RS was physically mapped onto 6RS-0.58-0.66-bin corresponding to 18.38 Mb in Weining rye. Rye (Secale cereale L., RR) contains valuable genes for wheat improvement. However, most of the rye resistance genes have not been successfully used in wheat cultivars. Identification of new rye resistance genes and transfer of these genes to wheat by developing small fragment translocation lines will make these genes more usable for wheat breeding. In this study, a broad-spectrum powdery mildew resistance gene PmW6RS was localized on rye chromosome arm 6RS using a new set of wheat-rye disomic and telosomic addition lines. To further study and use PmW6RS, 164 wheat-rye 6RS translocation lines were developed by 60Coγ-ray irradiation. Seedling and adult stage powdery mildew resistance analysis showed that 106 of the translocation lines were resistant. A physical map of 6RS was constructed using the 6RS translocation and deletion lines, and PmW6RS was localized in the 6RS-0.58-0.66-bin, flanked by markers X6RS-3 and X6RS-10 corresponding to the physical interval of 50.23-68.61 Mb in Weining rye genome. A total of 23 resistance-related genes were annotated. Nine markers co-segregate with the 6RS-0.58-0.66-bin, which can be used to rapidly trace the 6RS fragment carrying PmW6RS. Small fragment translocation lines with powdery mildew resistance were backcrossed with wheat cultivars, and 39 agronomically acceptable homozygous 6RS small fragment translocation lines were obtained. In conclusion, this study not only provides novel gene source and germplasms for wheat resistance breeding, but also laid a solid foundation for cloning of PmW6RS.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to explore whether ice slush (IS) causing local hypothermia can effectively inhibit the oculocardiac reflex (OCR) during strabismus surgery. METHODS: This prospective, randomized, double-blind study included 58 patients with concomitant strabismus scheduled for lateral rectus (LR) recession under general anesthesia. Patients were randomly allocated to receive IS (IS group) or standard treatment (control group) with sterile saline at room temperature before surgery. OCR was defined as a sudden decrease in heart rate (HR) of >15% from baseline. If one incidence of the OCR was found in 1 patient in any stage (0/I/II/III), the patient was defined as an OCR responder, and the incidence of overall OCR was the incidence of OCR responders. The primary outcome was the incidence of overall OCR during all stages of the surgery, which was analyzed by the Z test and computed based on the absolute risk difference with 2-sided 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using the Newcombe method. RESULTS: The overall OCR occurred in 19 of 29 patients (62.5% [95% CI, 45.7-82.1]) in the IS group and 28 of 29 patients (96.6% [95% CI, 82.2-99.9]) in the control group (absolute risk difference, -31.0% [95% CI, -49.4 to -11.0]; Z test, P < .001), which demonstrated that the incidence of overall OCR in IS group was significantly lower than that in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: IS on the ocular surface causing local hypothermia is a promising and easily accessible method to reduce the overall OCR, which can improve the safety of strabismus surgery.

BACKGROUND: It remains to be determined whether opioid-free anaesthesia (OFA) is consistently effective for different types of surgery. OBJECTIVES: The current study hypothesised that OFA could effectively inhibit intraoperative nociceptive responses, reduce side effects associated with opioid use, and improve the quality of recovery (QoR) in endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). DESIGN: A multicentre randomised controlled study. SETTING: Seven hospitals participated in this multicentre trial from May 2021 to December 2021. PATIENTS: Of the 978 screened patients who were scheduled for elective ESS, 800 patients underwent randomisation, and 773 patients were included in the analysis; 388 patients in the OFA group and 385 patients in the opioid anaesthesia group. INTERVENTIONS: The OFA group received balanced anaesthesia with dexmedetomidine, lidocaine, propofol and sevoflurane; the opioid anaesthesia group received opioid-based balanced anaesthesia using sufentanil, remifentanil, propofol and sevoflurane. OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome was 24-h postoperative QoR as evaluated by the Quality of Recovery-40 questionnaire. The key secondary outcomes were episodes of postoperative pain and postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). RESULTS: A significant difference ( P  = 0.0014) in the total score of 24-h postoperative Quality of Recovery-40 was found between the OFA group, median [interquartile range], 191 [185 to 196] and the opioid anaesthesia group (194 [187 to 197]). There were significant differences between the opioid anaesthesia group and the OFA group in the numerical rating scale score for pain after surgery at 30 min ( P   =  0.0017), 1 h ( P   =  0.0052), 2 h ( P   =  0.0079) and 24 h ( P  = 0.0303). The difference in the area under the curve of pain scale scores between the OFA group (24.2 [3.0 to 47.5]) and the opioid anaesthesia group (11.5 [1.0 to 39.0]) was significant ( P  = 0.0042). PONV occurred in 58 of 385 patients (15.1%) in the opioid anaesthesia group compared with 27 of 388 patients (7.0%) in the OFA group, suggesting the incidence of PONV in the OFA group was significantly lower than in the opioid anaesthesia group ( P   =  0.0021). CONCLUSION: OFA can provide good intraoperative analgesia and postoperative recovery quality as effectively as conventional opioid anaesthesia in patients undergoing ESS. OFA can be an alternative option in the pain management of ESS. Powdery mildew, caused by Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici (Bgt), poses a severe threat to wheat yield and quality worldwide. Rapid identification and the accurate transference of effective resistance genes are important to the development of resistant cultivars and the sustainable control of this disease. In the present study, the wheat line AL11 exhibited high levels of resistance to powdery mildew at both the seedling and adult plant stages. Genetic analysis of the AL11 × 'Shixin 733' mapping population revealed that its resistance was controlled by a single dominant gene, tentatively designated PmAL11. Using bulked segregant RNA-Seq and molecular marker analysis, PmAL11 was mapped to the Pm5 locus on chromosome 7B where it cosegregated with the functional marker Pm5e-KASP. Sequence alignment analysis revealed that the Pm5e-homologous sequence in AL11 was identical to the reported recessive gene Pm5e in wheat landrace 'Fuzhuang 30'. It appears that PmAL11 was most probably Pm5e, but it was mediated by a dominant inheritance pattern, so it should provide a valuable resistance resource for both genetic study and wheat breeding. To efficiently use and trace PmAL11 in breeding, a new kompetitive allele-specific PCR marker AL11-K2488 that cosegregated with this gene was developed and confirmed to be applicable in the different wheat backgrounds, thus promoting its use in the marker-assisted selection of PmAL11.

Powdery mildew, caused by Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici, is a devastating disease that seriously threatens wheat yield and quality. To control this disease, host resistance is the preferred measure. However, wheat breeding is a complex process with elusive exchange and recombination of the traits from their parents. Increased resistance often leads to a decline in other key traits, such as yield and quality. Developing breakthrough germplasms with harmonious powdery mildew resistance and other key breeding traits is attractive in wheat breeding. In this study, we developed an ideal wheat breeding line AL46 that pyramided its hexaploid triticale parent-derived desirable yield traits and its wheat parent-derived powdery mildew resistance gene Pm2. Sequential genomic in situ hybridization (GISH), multicolor GISH, multicolor fluorescence in situ hybridization, and molecular marker analyses revealed that AL46 was a wheat-rye T1RS·1BL translocation line. Genetic analysis combined with function marker detection and sequence alignment were used to confirm that AL46 carried the Pm2 gene. Then, we evaluated the powdery mildew resistance and comprehensive traits of AL46, and just as we designed, AL46 showed harmonious powdery mildew resistance with some key breeding traits. This study not only developed an ideal wheat germplasm resource but also provided a successful example for pyramiding breeding, which could be a promising direction for wheat improvement in the future.

Microsatellite markers, also known as short tandem repeats (STRs), are important for marker-assisted selection to detect genetic polymorphism, and they are uniformly distributed in eukaryotic genomes. To analyze the relationship between microsatellite loci and lactation traits of Holstein cows in Xinjiang, 175 lactating cows with similar birth dates, the same parity, and similar calving dates were selected, and 10 STR loci closely linked to quantitative trait loci were used to analyze the correlation between each STR locus and four lactation traits (daily milk yield, milk fat percentage, milk protein percentage, and lactose percentage). All loci showed different degrees of genetic polymorphism. The average values of observed alleles, effective alleles, expected heterozygosity, observed heterozygosity, and polymorphic information content of the 10 STR loci were 10, 3.11, 0.62, 0.64, and 0.58, respectively. Chi-square and G-square tests showed that all populations of loci were in accordance with the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Analysis of the correlation between STR locus genotype and lactation performance in the whole lactation period showed three loci (namely, BM143, BM415, and BP7) with no significant correlation with all lactation traits, two loci (BM302 and UWCA9) related to milk yield, three loci (BM103, BM302, and BM6425) related to milk fat percentage, two loci (BM302 and BM6425) related to milk protein percentage, and three loci (BM1443, BM302, and BMS1943) related to lactose percentage. The microsatellite loci selected in this study showed rich polymorphism in the experimental dairy cow population and were related to the lactation traits, which can be used for the evaluation of genetic resources and early breeding and improvement of Holstein dairy cows in Xinjiang.

The plant circadian clock evolved to increase fitness by synchronizing physiological processes with environmental oscillations. Crop fitness was artificially selected through domestication and breeding, and the circadian clock was identified by both natural and artificial selections as a key to improved fitness. Despite progress in Arabidopsis, our understanding of the crop circadian clock is still limited, impeding its rational improvement for enhanced fitness. To unveil the interactions between the crop circadian clock and various environmental cues, we comprehensively mapped abiotic stress inputs to the soybean circadian clock using a 2-module discovery pipeline. Using the "molecular timetable" method, we computationally surveyed publicly available abiotic stress-related soybean transcriptomes to identify stresses that have strong impacts on the global rhythm. These findings were then experimentally confirmed using a multiplexed RNA sequencing technology. Specific clock components modulated by each stress were further identified. This comprehensive mapping uncovered inputs to the plant circadian clock such as alkaline stress. Moreover, short-term iron deficiency targeted different clock components in soybean and Arabidopsis and thus had opposite effects on the clocks of these 2 species. Comparing soybean varieties with different iron uptake efficiencies suggests that phase modulation might be a mechanism to alleviate iron deficiency symptoms in soybean. These unique responses in soybean demonstrate the need to directly study crop circadian clocks. Our discovery pipeline may serve as a broadly applicable tool to facilitate these explorations.

Powdery mildew, caused by Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici, is a devastating disease of wheat that seriously affects yield and quality worldwide. Because of the extensive growth of wheat cultivars with homogeneous genetic background, exploring novel resistant resources from wheat relatives has become important for increasing the genetic diversity of wheat. Rye (Secale cereale) is a wheat relative possessing abundant resistance genes because of its high variation. Wheat line AL69, resistant to powdery mildew, was developed by crossing, backcrossing, and self-pollination for multiple generations between hexaploid triticale Zhongsi 237 and common wheat cultivar Zimai 17. Through genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) and multicolor fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), nondenaturing FISH, multicolor GISH, and selection with specific molecular markers, AL69 was determined to be a wheat-rye 2R (2D) disomic substitution line. Testing with different B. graminis f. sp. tritici isolates and genetic analysis showed that the all-stage resistance (also called seedling resistance) of AL69 was conferred by the cataloged powdery mildew resistance gene Pm4b derived from Zimai 17, and its adult-plant resistance was derived from the alien chromosome 2R of Zhongsi 237, which was found to be different from the previously reported rye-derived Pm genes, including Pm7 on 2RL. In addition, AL69 showed improved spike number per plant, spike length, fertile spikelet number per spike, kernel number per spike, and grain yield per plant compared with its wheat parent Zimai 17. An elite line S251 combining powdery mildew resistance with excellent agronomic performance was selected from the progenies of AL69 and wheat cultivar Jimai 22. Invasive species pose increasing threats to global biodiversity and ecosystems. While previous studies have characterized successful invaders based on ecological traits, characteristics related to evolutionary processes have rarely been investigated. Here we compared gene flow and local adaptation using demographic analyses and outlier tests in two co-occurring moth pests across their common native range of China, one of which (the peach fruit moth, Carposina sasakii) has maintained its native distribution, while the other (the oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta) has expanded its range globally during the past century. We found that both species showed a pattern of genetic differentiation and an evolutionary history consistent with a common southwestern origin and northward expansion in their native range. However, for the noninvasive species, genetic differentiation was closely aligned with the environment, and there was a relatively low level of gene flow, whereas in the invasive species, genetic differentiation was associated with geography. Genome scans indicated stronger patterns of climate-associated loci in the noninvasive species. While strong local adaptation and reduced gene flow across its native range may have decreased the invasiveness of C. sasakii, this requires further validation with additional comparisons of invasive and noninvasive species across their native range.

The stinging wasps (Hymenoptera: Aculeata) include diverse groups such as vespid wasps, ants and bees. Phylogenetic relationships among major lineages of stinging wasps have been inferred from molecular and morphological data. However, the genomic features of the mitochondrial genomes and their phylogenetic utility remain to be explored. In this study, we determined 23 mitochondrial genomes from the Aculeata. Four Mutillidae species showed relatively low A + T content compared to other species of the Aculeata (69.7%-77.4%). Eleven out of 44 species, mainly from the Chrysididae and the Pompilidae, showed reversals of GC skews. Gene rearrangements occurred across the species. Patterns of tRNA rearrangement were conserved in some groups, including the Chrysididae, Bethylidae, Pompilidae, Scolioidea and Vespoidea. Rearrangement of protein-coding genes were found in 12 out of 44 species of the Aculeata, including all four species from the Chrysididae, both species from the Bethylidae, one species from the Dryinidae, all three Scolioidea species and two Apoidea species. Phylogenetic inference showed a long branch in species with unusual genomic features, such as in the Mutillidae and Bethylidae. By excluding these species, we found paraphyly of the Chrysidoidea and a sister group relationship between the Formicoidea and Vespoidea. These results improve our understanding of the evolution of mitochondrial genomes in the Aculeata and, in general, the evolution across this subclade.

The fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, is a model species in evolutionary studies. However, population processes of this species in East Asia are poorly studied. Here we examined the population genetic structure of D. melanogaster across China. There were 14 mitochondrial haplotypes with 10 unique ones out of 23 known from around the globe. Pairwise FST values estimated from 15 novel microsatellites ranged from 0 to 0.11, with geographically isolated populations showing the highest level of genetic uniqueness. STRUCTURE analysis identified high levels of admixture at both the individual and population levels. Mantel tests indicated a strong association between genetic distance and geographical distance as well as environmental distance. Full redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that independent effects of environmental conditions and geography accounted for 62.10% and 31.58% of the total explained genetic variance, respectively. When geographic variables were constrained in a partial RDA analysis, the environmental variables bio2 (mean diurnal air temperature range), bio13 (precipitation of the wettest month), and bio15 (precipitation seasonality) were correlated with genetic distance. Our study suggests that demographic history, geographical isolation, and environmental factors have together shaped the population genetic structure of D. melanogaster after its introduction into China.

PURPOSE: To explore the short-term changes after percutaneous intramyocardial septal radiofrequency ablation (PIMSRA) in patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM), using quantitative analysis of two-dimensional speckle tracking imaging (2D-STI). METHODS: This prospective self-controlled study included 30 HOCM patients treated with PIMSRA. The study for each patient spanned over at least 1 year. Interventricular septal thickness and the left ventricular outflow tract peak pressure gradient (LVOT-PG) were measured through echocardiography, and 2D-STI was used to evaluate the left ventricular (LV) systolic function and synchrony. Cardiac function was assessed using the New York Heart Association's (NYHA) functional classification for cardiac disease, and through the serum levels of cardiac troponin I (cTnI) and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP). Biomarkers procollagen type I carboxy-terminal propeptide (PICP) and matrix metalloproteinases-2 (MMP-2) were detected for noninvasive assessment of myocardial fibrosis. RESULTS: The patients' interventricular septal thickness, LVOT-PG, NYHA class, and plasma PICP and MMP-2 levels at the first month postoperatively were significantly lower than before operation (all P < .05). The 2D-STI quantitative variables of LV systolic function and synchrony improved significantly (all P < .05). They improved further 1 year postoperatively (P < .01 or P < .001). Serum cTnI and NT-proBNP levels increased 1 month postoperatively, but significantly decreased 1 year postoperatively (both P < .05). Pearson or Spearman correlation analysis showed that the improvement of interventricular septal thickness, LVOT-PG, NYHA class, and the levels of cTnI, NT-proBNP, PICP and MMP-2, were in positive correlation with the restoration of LV systolic function and synchrony (P < .01 or P < .001). CONCLUSION: The changes in 2D-STI quantitative variables related to LV systolic function and synchrony are closely correlated with the improvement of cardiac function in HOCM patients after PIMSRA. These 2D-STI variables can serve for objective, accurate, and noninvasive evaluation of the HOCM treatment.

Phase separation at nanoscale and highly dispersive nanoparticles were exploited to fabricate a novel type of nanocrystalline W-Cu-Cr-ZrC composite with special hierarchical structure. The microstructures were characterized elaborately and the formation mechanisms of the hierarchical structure were disclosed. It was found that the supersaturated Cr separated from W during sintering and segregated at profuse interfaces. Moreover, Cr can also interact with ZrC nanoparticles dispersed in W matrix, leading to the formation of Zr-Cr-C phase which exerts significant effect on inhibiting coarsening of W grains. On the other side, the dissolution of Cr and W contributes to the formation of Cu nanocrystalline structure. As a result, the prepared W-Cu-Cr-ZrC composite exhibits an ultrahigh hardness of 943HV owing to the synergy of nanocrystalline structure and dispersion strengthening of nanoparticles. The hardness has achieved the highest value among the W-Cu-based composites with the same Cu content reported in literature. This study provided a new strategy for production of high-performance W-Cu-based composites through combination of microstructural design with addition of doping element and nanoparticles.

The effects of aluminum (Al) on the microstructure, hardness and wear resistance of tungsten-copper (W-Cu) composites were investigated. The W-Cu composites were fabricated via mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering. It is found that the Al dissolved in the metastable W-Cu alloy can act as an 'intermediary' to hinder the diffusion and phase separation process of Cu out of W during sintering, constructing an interpenetrating nanostructure where Al redistributes in W and Cu. Correspondingly, the hardness of composites increase from 463.4 HV30 to 512.05 HV30 due to Al dissolution and formation of the nanostructure, and their contributions to hardness variation of the original W and Cu regions were distinguished by nanoindentation. In addition, the wear volume was also reduced to less than a third of that of original W-Cu composites without Al addition due to the abundant interfaces and mechanical strengthening, which restricts the removal of W and propagation of cracks during the wear process.
