RESUMO

To conveniently monitor bioactive cysteine (Cys) and Fe2+ in practice, a kind of poly-ß-cyclodextrin strengthen praseodymium oxide (Pr6O11) porous oxidase mimic (p-ß-CD@Pr6O11) was constructed by virtue of the strong coordination between nano Pr6O11 and poly-ß-cyclodextrin substrate. After its microstructure and physicochemical property were characterized in detail, it was noted that porous p-ß-CD@Pr6O11 exhibited excellent enzyme-like catalytic activity to accelerate the oxidation of 3,3',5,5,'-tetramethylbanzidine (TMB) and 2,2'-azinobis (3-ethylbenzo-thiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) ammonium salt (ABTS) with significant color-enhancement effect in the air. Based on the signal amplification, trace Cys could exclusively deteriorate the UV-vis absorbance at 653 nm of p-ß-CD@Pr6O11-TMB and Fe2+ alter the one at 729 nm of p-ß-CD@Pr6O11-ABTS with visual color changes. Under the optimized conditions, the proposed p-ß-CD@Pr6O11-TMB and p-ß-CD@Pr6O11-ABTS systems were successfully applied for dual-channel monitoring of Cys in Cys capsules and fetal bovine serum and Fe2+ in agricultural products with quite low detection limits, i.e., 7.8×10-9 mol·L-1 for Cys and 6.93×10-8 mol·L-1 (S/N=3) for Fe2+, respectively. The synergetic-enhancement detection mechanisms to Cys and Fe2+ were also proposed.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To assess the longitudinal changes of the posterior vortex veins (VVs) in highly myopic (HM) eyes. METHODS: The medical records of 1,730 consecutive HM eyes that had undergone indocyanine green angiography were studied. Eyes that had posterior VVs and had undergone at least two indocyanine green angiography examinations with a minimum interval of 3 years were selected from this group. RESULTS: Ninety-one eyes of 78 patients met the inclusion criteria. A total of 124 posterior VVs were identified. Over an average interval of 7.8 ± 5.0 years, 41 (33.1%) of the 124 posterior VVs had marked changes consisting mainly of an attenuation of vessels in 36 posterior VVs (87.8%) and alterations in the drainage course in 16 posterior VVs (39.0%). Fifteen posterior VVs had both types of changes. Most of the attenuations of the vessels occurred for smaller branches, but a complete loss of the entire trunk was seen in three eyes. Additionally, four eyes had posterior VV changes in association with changes of peripheral VVs. CONCLUSION: Posterior VV in highly myopic eyes can undergo changes with increasing time. The associated factors included the development and progression of myopic maculopathy lesions. In some cases, the blood drainage shifted from posterior VV to peripheral VV by forming anastomotic channels.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Waterlogging is one of the major abiotic stresses in barley and greatly reduces grain yield and quality. To explore the mechanism controlling waterlogging tolerance in barley, physiological, anatomical and transcriptional analyses were performed in two contrasting barley varieties, viz. Franklin (susceptible) and TX9425 (tolerant). RESULTS: Compared to Franklin, TX9425 had more adventitious roots and aerenchymas and higher antioxidant enzyme activities. A total of 3064 and 5693 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in TX9425 after 24 h and 72 h of waterlogging treatment, respectively, while 2297 and 8462 DEGs were identified in Franklin. The results suggested that TX9425 was less affected by waterlogging stress after 72 h of treatment. The DEGs were enriched mainly in energy metabolism, hormone regulation, reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging, and cell wall-modifying enzymes. Alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) plays an important role in response to waterlogging stress. We found that HvADH4 was significantly upregulated under waterlogging stress in TX9425. Transgenic Arabidopsis overexpressing HvADH4 displayed higher activity of antioxidant enzymes and was more tolerant to waterlogging than the wild type (WT). CONCLUSIONS: The current results provide valuable information that will be of great value for the exploration of new candidate genes for molecular breeding of waterlogging tolerance in barley.

RESUMO

Simultaneous recovery of energy and carbon from recalcitrant wastewater has attracted ever-growing interest for water management. However, the existing technologies to break down recalcitrant pollutants are mainly energy and chemical intensive. Here, a novel hydrothermal reaction amended with activated carbon (AC) was demonstrated to enable an unprecedented 99.5% removal of an exemplar difficult-to-degrade contaminant, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), from wastewater. Meanwhile, an easy-separated hydrochar (C6H7.08O0.99) with an abundance of unsaturated aromatic rings was produced, exhibiting 118.46% of energy yield with a high heating value of 32.9 MJ/kg, outperforming the hydrochar(s) reported to date. The retrieved energy from the hydrochar was able to entirely offset the energy needs for this hydrothermal process. Interestingly, the AC catalyst can sustain in situ reuse over 125 cycles with no evidence of irreversible deactivation. The adjacent carbonyl groups on AC were revealed to provide active sites for dehydrogenation from either the C-H (1.24 Å) or O-H (1.40 Å) bond in PVA, forming hydroxyl groups on AC and highly reactive intermediates (ΔG0 = -11.5 kcal/mol). It was further proved that the free oxygen in the headspace extracted H atoms from the newly formed hydroxyl groups on AC (ΔG0 = -4.7 kcal/mol), thus regenerating the carbonyl sites on AC for the next catalytic hydrothermal dehydrogenation cycles. The long-lasting catalyst reusability and energy self-sufficient approach offer a sustainable route to carbon neutrality in recalcitrant wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

Acinar epithelial cell atrophy in secretory glands is a hallmark of primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS), the cause of which is far from elucidated. We examined the role of acinar atrophy by focusing on the metabolism of glandular epithelial cells and mitochondria in the pSS environment. After confirming the presence of a high-lactate environment in the labial glands of human pSS patients, we used the A253 cell line and NOD/Ltj mice as models to investigate the metabolic changes in salivary gland epithelial cells in a high-lactate environment in vitro and in vivo. We found that epithelial cells produced high levels of IL-6, IL-8, IFN-α, IFN-ß and TNF-α and exhibited significant NF-κB and type I IFN-related pathway activation. The results confirmed that lactate damaged mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and led to its leakage, which subsequently activated the cGAS-STING pathway. Inflammatory cytokine production and pathway activation were inhibited in vivo and in vitro by the lactate scavenger sodium dichloroacetate (DCA). Our study provides new insights into the etiology and treatment of pSS from the perspective of cell metabolism.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the development and progression patterns of macular neovascularization (MNV)-related atrophies in eyes with pathologic myopia. METHODS: Twenty-seven eyes of 26 patients with MNV followed from its onset to progression to macular atrophy were studied. A longitudinal series of autofluorescence and optical coherence tomography images were examined for the patterns of MNV-related atrophy. Changes in best-corrected visual acuity were determined for each pattern. RESULTS: The mean age was 67.2 ± 8.7 years. The mean axial length was 29.6 ± 1.5 mm. Three patterns of atrophy were identified: multiple-atrophic pattern, 63% of the eyes had small atrophies occurring at multiple sites around the MNV edge; single-atrophic pattern, 18.5% had atrophies occurring only on one side of the MNV edge; and exudation-related pattern, 18.5% had atrophy occurring within a previous serous exudation or hemorrhagic area and slightly away from the MNV edge. Eyes with atrophies in multiple-atrophic and exudation-related patterns progressed to large macular atrophies involving the central fovea and showed decrease in best-corrected visual acuity during the 3-year follow-up period. Eyes with single-atrophic pattern had a sparing of the fovea and had good recovery of the best-corrected visual acuity. CONCLUSION: There are three patterns of MNV-related atrophy in eyes with pathologic myopia with different courses of progression.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To analyze the complex pattern of filling of the intervortex vein (IVV) anastomoses through large trunks in highly myopic eyes based on indocyanine green angiographic (ICGA) videos. METHODS: The medical records of 1,060 consecutive highly myopic eyes that had undergone ICGA were studied. IVV anastomoses were identified in the ICGA images, and the ICGA images and videos were analyzed comprehensively to characterize their hemodynamic features. RESULTS: Seven eyes with IVV anastomoses through large trunks were analyzed. In the ICGA videos of six eyes, laminar flow was observed in the IVV anastomotic vessels. The laminar flow started in the arterial phase in two eyes, with pulsatile fashion in 1 of them. The flow began in the early arteriovenous transition phase in four eyes. The laminar flow continued for a mean of 12.17 ± 3.06 seconds, and the remaining section was gradually filled slower than the surrounding veins. The anastomotic trunk for the remaining one eye was too narrow to be analyzed. Four eyes had longitudinal ICGA records, and two had significant attenuation and narrowing of the anastomotic vessels. CONCLUSION: The very early filling of part of the IVV anastomoses suggests that arteriovenous anastomoses are involved in the IVV of highly myopic eyes. However, this suggestion needs further study. There may be similar pathogenesis for IVV anastomoses either in thick or thin sclera.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To determine the longitudinal changes in patterns of inner scleral curvature and development of posterior staphylomas in the eyes of highly myopic youths. METHODS: A retrospective, longitudinal study. Ultra-widefield optic coherence tomographic (UWF-OCT) images from 47 eyes of 24 highly myopic patients with a follow-up period of 2 to 4 years were analyzed. Patients were divided into two groups, the children group younger than 10 years and the adolescents group aged 11 to 19 years. RESULTS: During the follow-up period, the scleral curvature patterns changed in either the horizontal or vertical optical coherence tomographic sections in 27 of the 46 eyes (58.7%) of both groups. The changes were significantly more frequent in children than adolescents. The change in the vertical section from symmetrical to asymmetrical in almost of children was correlated with an increase in the axial length and myopia. Four eyes had a staphyloma at the baseline. The staphyloma developed in six eyes of the remaining 43 eyes (14%). All staphyloma edges were found at or around the optic disc and were oriented in the horizontal direction. CONCLUSION: Our results showed that UWF-OCT images can be used to determine the process of new staphyloma formation and concurrent changes in scleral curvature patterns.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the value of individual laboratory tests and combinations of tests for predicting disease severity. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 62 patients with space infections in the oral and maxillofacial head and neck regions. Patients were divided into three groups according to severity. Laboratory tests associated with disease severity were identified. RESULTS: As the severity of infection increased, leukocytes, neutrophils, C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), soluble interleukin receptor (sILR) 2, IL6, and creatinine (CR) increased. In the ROC analysis of group 1 (moderate infection) versus group 2 (severe infection), the area under the curve (AUC) values for leukocytes (AUC = 0.724), neutrophils (AUC = 0.714), PCT (AUC = 0.762) and a combination of the 3 tests (AUC = 0.768) suggested a strong predictive value. Furthermore, in the ROC analysis of group 2 (severe infection) versus group 3 (extremely severe infection), the AUC values for CRP (AUC = 0.84), PCT (AUC = 0.799), sIL2R (AUC = 0.937), IL6 (AUC = 0.863) and a combination of the four tests (AUC = 0.943) suggested a strong predictive value. CONCLUSIONS: Leukocytes, neutrophils, and PCT were associated with multispace infection and high severity. CRP, PCT, sIL2R, and/or IL6 were associated with extremely severe infections occurring in the oral and maxillofacial head and neck regions.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the diagnostic performance of prenatal ultrasound in the prediction of biliary atresia (BA). METHODS: We prospectively collected cases of suspected biliary abnormalities in the 2nd trimester of pregnancy and performed a series (at least 3) of prenatal ultrasound examinations in the 2nd and 3rd trimester. The presence of the gallbladder was examined each time, and its size and shape were assessed if the gallbladder was visible. The existence of other abnormalities was carefully evaluated. Neonatal ultrasound examination was conducted within 1 month after birth, and clinical data were followed-up for 6 months after birth. RESULTS: Among the 41 895 patients, 298 were suspected to have biliary abnormalities, while 82 patients were excluded due to loss to follow-up or induced labor caused by other abnormalities. A total of 216 patients were included in this study, and 15 were diagnosed with BA. We summarized the ultrasound findings of the gallbladders and defined a high-risk gallbladder for the prenatal diagnosis of BA. This was demonstrated to have the best diagnostic performance as a single parameter, with an area under the curve of 0.914 (95 %CI: 0.869-0.948). In addition, higher incidences of biliary cysts, right hepatic artery dilation, echogenic bowel, and ascites were observed in BA fetuses. Logistic regression analysis showed that the combination of 5 parameters had better diagnostic performance, with an area under the curve of 0.995 (95 %CI: 0.973-0.999). CONCLUSION: The fetal gallbladder was found to be a critical feature for the identification of BA. Concomitant abnormalities could be helpful to improve the accuracy of the diagnosis.

RESUMO

Hyphantria cunea Drury (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) is a quarantine pest in China that can cause damage to hundreds of plants. As biological control agents, Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus (NPV) and Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner (Bacillales: Bacillaceae) (Bt) are commonly used to inhibit the prevalence of H. cunea. To investigate the role of midgut bacteria in the infection of NPV and Bt in H. cunea, we performed a series of tests, including isolating the dominant culturable bacteria in the midgut, eliminating intestinal bacteria, and respectively inoculating the dominant strains with NPV and Bt for bioassay. Two dominant bacteria, Klebsiella oxytoca Lautrop (Enterobacterales: Enterobacteriaceae) and Enterococcus mundtii Collins (Lactobacillales: Enterococcaceae), in the midgut of H. cunea were identified, and a strain of H. cunea larvae without intestinal bacteria was successfully established. In the bioassays of entomopathogen infection, K. oxytoca showed significant synergistic effects with both NPV and Bt on the death of H. cunea. In contrast, E. mundtii played antagonistic effects. This phenomenon may be attributed to the differences in the physico-chemical properties of the two gut bacteria and the alkaline environment required for NPV and Bt to infect the host. It is worth noting that the enhanced insecticidal activity of K. oxytoca on NPV and Bt provides a reference for future biological control of H. cunea by intestinal bacteria.

RESUMO

Recently, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have found extensive indoor applications. In numerous indoor UAV scenarios, navigation paths remain consistent. While many indoor positioning methods offer excellent precision, they often demand significant costs and computational resources. Furthermore, such high functionality can be superfluous for these applications. To address this issue, we present a cost-effective, computationally efficient solution for path following and obstacle avoidance. The UAV employs a down-looking camera for path following and a front-looking camera for obstacle avoidance. This paper refines the carrot casing algorithm for line tracking and introduces our novel line-fitting path-following algorithm (LFPF). Both algorithms competently manage indoor path-following tasks within a constrained field of view. However, the LFPF is superior at adapting to light variations and maintaining a consistent flight speed, maintaining its error margin within ±40 cm in real flight scenarios. For obstacle avoidance, we utilize depth images and YOLOv4-tiny to detect obstacles, subsequently implementing suitable avoidance strategies based on the type and proximity of these obstacles. Real-world tests indicated minimal computational demands, enabling the Nvidia Jetson Nano, an entry-level computing platform, to operate at 23 FPS.

RESUMO

The injury of Schwann cells is an important pathological feature of peripheral neuropathy. However, the explicit molecular mechanism and blocking method remains to be explored. In this study, we identified an pivotal executor of necroptosis-RIPK1, performed an unique function in response to oxidative stress-induced injury in Rat Schwann cells. We found that after oxidative stress-simulation by H2O2, RIPK1 was activated independent of genetic up-regulation, but through the post-translational modification, including its protein levels, phosphorylation of Serine 166 and Serine 321 sites and its general ubiquitination levels. Under a confocal microscopy, we found that RIPK1 was significantly accumulated into the mitochondria. And the phosphorylation, ubiquitination levels were also elevated in mitochondrial RIPK1, as indicated by immunoprecipitation. Through the administration of N-Acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), a ROS inhibitor, we found that the phosphorylation, ubiquitination and mitochondrial location of RIPK1 was significantly suppressed. While administration of Necrostatin-1 (Nec-1) failed to influence the levels of ROS and mitochondrial membrane potential, revealing that RIPK1 served as the down-stream regulators of ROS. Lastly, pharmacological inhibition of RIPK1 by Nec-1 attenuated the levels of necroptosis, increased proliferation, as indicated by Annexin V/PI evaluation, CCK-8 detection, TEM scanning and EdU staining. Our results indicate a previous un-recognized post-translational change of RIPK1 in response to oxidative stress in Schwann cells.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To identify anomalies of choroidal venous structure in highly myopic (HM) eyes. METHODS: Widefield indocyanine green angiographic images of 175 HM eyes (refractive error ≤ -6.0D diopters or axial length >26.5 mm) and 100 control eyes taken between January 2014 and December 2018 were reviewed. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in age and gender between HM patients and controls. Three types of changes of large choroidal veins were found in 103 HM eyes (58.86%): Asymmetry of vortex veins in 44 eyes (25.14%), isolated long vein across the macula in 58 eyes (33.14%), and intervortex anastomoses in 25 eyes (14.29%). Similar changes in controls were found in 12 eyes (12%), 0 eye (0%), and 2 eyes (2%), respectively, which were significantly lower than those in the HM group (all P < 0.05). The patterns of asymmetry were affected by steeper staphyloma edges and anastomoses were observed through large trunks and terminal venules. In two eyes with large trunk anastomosis, attenuation of the less dominant vortex vein was observed afterward. CONCLUSION: Choroidal venous anomalies are more common in HM eyes than controls. Choroidal venous structure in HM eyes may be altering continuously, and such changes may underlie the development of myopic maculopathy.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Myopic macular neovascularization (MNV) is the most common cause of a reduction of central vision in eyes with pathologic myopia, and it can progress to macular atrophy in the long-term. The aim of this study was to determine the risk factors associated with the development of MNVs. METHODS: There were 17,198 follow-up records from 5,409 eyes of 2,784 highly myopic patients that were reviewed. The general information and ophthalmic information in the records were studied. The significance of the correlations of factors associated with the development and predicting the development of myopic MNV were determined. RESULTS: Being a woman (odds ratio [OR]: 0.727, P<0.001), having a longer axial length (OR = 0.948, P<0.001), a poorer baseline best-correct visual acuity (BCVA, OR = 2.098, P<0.001), having severe myopic maculopathy (overall: P<0.001), prior myopic MNV in the fellow eye (OR = 4.105, P<0.001), presence of patchy atrophy (overall P<0.001), lacquer cracks (OR = 1.718, P<0.001), prior foveal retinal detachment (RD, OR = 3.269, P<0.001), prior macular hole (MH, OR = 0.641, P <0.001), prior macular retinoschisis (OR = 1.533, P<0.001), and prior macular edema (OR = 1.508, P<0.001) were significantly correlated with the development of myopic MNV. Eyes with MNV and patchy atrophy would require an intensive follow-up examination for myopic patients as the fellow eye would have a risk of >70% for the development of myopic MNV in 3-years and nearly 80% in 5-years. CONCLUSIONS: Clinicians need to pay special attention to eyes with severe grades of myopic maculopathy, prior myopic MNV in the fellow eye, presence of patchy atrophy, and prior foveal retinal detachment to determine the onset of myopic MNV.

RESUMO

Combined androgen blockade using bicalutamide (Bic) is a therapeutic choice for treating prostate cancer (PCa). However, even at regular clinical dosages, Bic frequently shows adverse effects associated with cardiovascular and renal damage. Previously, we found that Bic selectively damaged mesangial cells compared to tubular cells and in an in vivo rat model, we also found renal damage caused by Bic. In the present study, a rat mesangial cell model was used to further the investigation. Results indicated that Bic enhanced lactate dehydrogenase release, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, lysosome population and kidney injury molecule-1 and decreased N-cadherin. Bic elicited mitochondrial swelling and reduced the mitochondrial potential, resulting in severe suppression of the oxygen consumption rate (OCR), maximum respiration and ATP production. The hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1 transcriptional activity and messenger RNA were significantly upregulated in dose-dependent manners. The HIF-1 protein reached a peak value at 24 h then rapidly decayed. BCL2/adenovirus E1B 19-kDa protein-interacting protein 3 and cleaved caspase-3 were dose-dependently upregulated by Bic (60 M) and that eventually led to cell apoptosis. It is suggested that Bic induces renal damage via ROS and modulates HIF-1 pathway and clinically, some protective agents like antioxidants are recommended for co-treatment.

RESUMO

Nifedipine (NF) is reported to have many beneficial effects in antihypertensive therapy. Recently, we found that NF induced lipid accumulation in renal tubular cells. Palmitic acid-induced renal lipotoxicity was found to be partially mediated by endoplasmic reticular (ER) stress, while it can also be elicited by NF in kidney cells; we examined the induction of suspected pathways in both in vitro and in vivo models. NRK52E cells cultured in high-glucose medium were treated with NF (30 µM) for 24-48 h. ER stress-induced lipotoxicity was explored by staining with thioflavin T and Nile red, transmission electron microscopy, terminal uridine nick-end labeling, and Western blotting. ER stress was also investigated in rats with induced chronic kidney disease (CKD) fed NF for four weeks. NF induced the production of unfolded protein aggregates, resulting in ER stress, as evidenced by the upregulation of glucose-regulated protein, 78 kDa (GRP78), activating transcription factor 6α (ATF6α), C/EBP-homologous protein (CHOP), and caspases-12, -3, and -7. In vitro early apoptosis was more predominant than late apoptosis. Most importantly, ATF6α was confirmed to play a unique role in NF-induced ER stress in both models. CKD patients with hypertension should not undergo NF therapy. In cases where it is required, alleviation of ER stress should be considered to avoid further damaging the kidneys.

RESUMO

Dysregulation of fatty acid oxidation and accumulation of fatty acids can cause kidney injury. Nifedipine modulates lipogenesis-related transcriptional factor SREBP-1/2 in proximal tubular cells by inhibiting the Adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway in vitro. However, the mechanisms by which nifedipine (NF) modulates lipotoxicity in vivo are unclear. Here, we examined the effect of NF in a doxorubicin (DR)-induced kidney injury rat model. Twenty-four Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into control, DR, DR+NF, and high-fat diet (HFD) groups. The DR, DR+NF, and HFD groups showed hypertension and proteinuria. Western blotting and immunohistochemical analysis showed that NF significantly induced TNF-α, CD36, SREBP-1/2, and acetyl-CoA carboxylase expression and renal fibrosis, and reduced fatty acid synthase and AMPK compared to other groups (p < 0.05). Additionally, 18 patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who received renal transplants were enrolled to examine their graft fibrosis and lipid contents via transient elastography. Low-density lipoprotein levels in patients with CKD strongly correlated with lipid contents and fibrosis in grafted kidneys (p < 0.05). Thus, NF may initiate lipogenesis through the SREBP-1/2/AMPK pathway and lipid uptake by CD36 upregulation and aggravate renal fibrosis in vivo. Higher low-density lipoprotein levels may correlate with renal fibrosis and lipid accumulation in grafted kidneys of patients with CKD.

RESUMO

Lipid accumulation in renal cells has been implicated in the pathogenesis of obesity-related kidney disease, and lipotoxicity in the kidney can be a surrogate marker for renal failure or renal fibrosis. Fatty acid oxidation provides energy to renal tubular cells. Ca2+ is required for mitochondrial ATP production and to decrease reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, how nifedipine (a calcium channel blocker) affects lipogenesis is unknown. We utilized rat NRK52E cells pre-treated with varying concentrations of nifedipine to examine the activity of lipogenesis enzymes and lipotoxicity. A positive control exposed to oleic acid was used for comparison. Nifedipine was found to activate acetyl Coenzyme A (CoA) synthetase, acetyl CoA carboxylase, long chain fatty acyl CoA elongase, ATP-citrate lyase, and 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG CoA) reductase, suggesting elevated production of cholesterol and phospholipids. Nifedipine exposure induced a vast accumulation of cytosolic free fatty acids (FFA) and stimulated the production of reactive oxygen species, upregulated CD36 and KIM-1 (kidney injury molecule-1) expression, inhibited p-AMPK activity, and triggered the expression of SREBP-1/2 and lipin-1, underscoring the potential of nifedipine to induce lipotoxicity with renal damage. To our knowledge, this is the first report demonstrating nifedipine-induced lipid accumulation in the kidney.

RESUMO

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a head and neck cancer with poor clinical outcomes and insufficient treatments in Southeast Asian populations. Although concurrent chemoradiotherapy has improved recovery rates of patients, poor overall survival and low efficacy are still critical problems. To improve the therapeutic efficacy, we focused on a tumor-associated protein called Annexin A2 (ANXA2). This review summarizes the mechanisms by which ANXA2 promotes cancer progression (e.g., proliferation, migration, the epithelial-mesenchymal transition, invasion, and cancer stem cell formation) and therapeutic resistance (e.g., radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy). These mechanisms gave us a deeper understanding of the molecular aspects of cancer progression, and further provided us with a great opportunity to overcome therapeutic resistance of NPC and other cancers with high ANXA2 expression by developing this prospective ANXA2-targeted therapy.
