RESUMO

The time since deposition (TSD) of a bloodstain, i.e., the time of a bloodstain formation is an essential piece of biological evidence in crime scene investigation. The practical usage of some existing microscopic methods (e.g., spectroscopy or RNA analysis technology) is limited, as their performance strongly relies on high-end instrumentation and/or rigorous laboratory conditions. This paper presents a practically applicable deep learning-based method (i.e., BloodNet) for efficient, accurate, and costless TSD inference from a macroscopic view, i.e., by using easily accessible bloodstain photos. To this end, we established a benchmark database containing around 50,000 photos of bloodstains with varying TSDs. Capitalizing on such a large-scale database, BloodNet adopted attention mechanisms to learn from relatively high-resolution input images the localized fine-grained feature representations that were highly discriminative between different TSD periods. Also, the visual analysis of the learned deep networks based on the Smooth Grad-CAM tool demonstrated that our BloodNet can stably capture the unique local patterns of bloodstains with specific TSDs, suggesting the efficacy of the utilized attention mechanism in learning fine-grained representations for TSD inference. As a paired study for BloodNet, we further conducted a microscopic analysis using Raman spectroscopic data and a machine learning method based on Bayesian optimization. Although the experimental results show that such a new microscopic-level approach outperformed the state-of-the-art by a large margin, its inference accuracy is significantly lower than BloodNet, which further justifies the efficacy of deep learning techniques in the challenging task of bloodstain TSD inference. This study utilized Mendelian randomization to explore the impact of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and their subtypes on brain structures, using genome-wide association study data from the FinnGen consortium for hypertensive disorders of pregnancy exposure and brain structure data from the ENIGMA consortium as outcomes. The inverse-variance weighted method, along with Cochran's Q test, Mendelian randomization-Egger regression, Mendelian randomization-PRESSO global test, and the leave-one-out approach, were applied to infer causality and assess heterogeneity and pleiotropy. Findings indicate hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are associated with structural brain alterations, including reduced cortical thickness in areas like the insula, isthmus cingulate gyrus, superior temporal gyrus, temporal pole, and transverse temporal gyrus, and an increased surface area in the superior frontal gyrus. Specific associations were found for hypertensive disorders of pregnancy subtypes: chronic hypertension with superimposed preeclampsia increased cortical thickness in the supramarginal gyrus; preeclampsia/eclampsia led to thinner cortex in the lingual gyrus and larger hippocampal volume and superior parietal lobule surface area. Chronic hypertension was associated with reduced cortical thickness in the caudal and rostral anterior cingulate and increased surface area of the cuneus and thickness of the pars orbitalis cortex. Gestational hypertension showed no significant brain region changes. These insights clarify hypertensive disorders of pregnancies' neurological and cognitive effects by identifying affected brain regions.

High-temperature rechargeable batteries are essential for energy storage in elevated-temperature situations. Due to the resource abundance of potassium, high-temperature K-ion batteries are drawing increasing research interest. However, raising the working temperature would aggravate the chemical and mechanical instability of the KIB anode, resulting in very fast capacity fading, especially when high capacity is pursued. Here, we demonstrated that a porous conductive metal-organic framework (MOF), which is constructed by N-rich aromatic molecules and CuO4 units via π-d conjugation, could provide multiple accessible redox-active sites and promised robust structure stability for efficient potassium storage at high temperatures. Even working at 60 °C, this MOF anode could deliver high initial capacity (455 mAh g-1), impressive rate, and extraordinary cyclability (96.7% capacity retention for 1600 cycles), which is much better than those of reported high-temperature KIB anodes. The mechanistic study revealed that C═N groups and CuO4 units contributed abundant redox-active sites; the synergistic effect of π-d conjugated character and reticular porous architecture facilitated the K+/e- transport and ensured an insoluble electrode with small volume deformation, thus achieving stable high-capacity potassium storage.

Augmented Reality technology enables users to interact with virtual imagines and the real world. The emergence of AR has propelled the development of the next generation of optical devices towards miniaturization, lightweight design, and enhanced light field manipulation capabilities. However, current AR glass still suffer from shortcomings of low efficiency. This work proposes a near-eye display device based on bilayer chiral quasi-BIC (Bound States in the continuum) nonlocal metasurfaces which can reflect narrow bandwidth RGB light with high efficiency while being able to see the natural environment clearly. At the same time, the geometric phase is introduced to realize oblique emission and reflective focusing. Due to its ability to manipulate narrowband light fields, it can reduce the interaction of metasurfaces and environment light, and has potential applications in the fields of imaging and near-eye display.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the expression of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) in pregnant women with preeclampsia and elucidate its role in promoting placental angiogenesis through the ERK1/2-EGR-1 signaling pathway. METHODS: Serum FGF23 levels were measured by ELISA in healthy pregnant women and patients with preeclampsia during the first, second, and third trimesters of pregnancy. Wound healing, Transwell, and tube formation assays were performed to investigate the effects of FGF23 on cell migration, invasion and tube formation. The expression of vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) and its upstream signaling molecules, p-ERK, and EGR-1, in placental tissues was detected by RT-qPCR and western blotting. Additionally, the effect of FGF23 on VEGF-A, p-ERK, and EGR-1 expression was further explored in vitro. RESULTS: Serum FGF23 levels increased with gestational age. During the third trimester, the control group exhibited a more pronounced increase in FGF23 levels than the preeclampsia group. Administering exogenous FGF23 promoted trophoblast cell migration, invasion and enhanced tube formation in vascular endothelial cells. The expression levels of VEGF-A, p-ERK, and EGR-1 in the placental tissues were significantly lower in the preeclampsia group than in the control group. In vitro experiments confirmed that FGF23 up-regulated VEGF-A expression through the p-ERK/EGR-1 signaling pathway. CONCLUSION: The serum level of FGF23 decreased in pregnant women with preeclampsia, inhibiting the ERK1/2-EGR-1 pathway and resulting in decreased expression of VEGF-A, thereby inhibiting placental angiogenesis. This could be a potential mechanism involved in the progression of preeclampsia.

Two-terminal self-rectifying (SR)-synaptic memristors are preeminent candidates for high-density and efficient neuromorphic computing, especially for future three-dimensional integrated systems, which can self-suppress the sneak path current in crossbar arrays. However, SR-synaptic memristors face the critical challenges of nonlinear weight potentiation and steep depression, hindering their application in conventional artificial neural networks (ANNs). Here, a SR-synaptic memristor (Pt/NiOx/WO3-x:Ti/W) and cross-point array with sneak path current suppression features and ultrahigh-weight potentiation linearity up to 0.9997 are introduced. The image contrast enhancement and background filtering are demonstrated on the basis of the device array. Moreover, an unsupervised self-organizing map (SOM) neural network is first developed for orientation recognition with high recognition accuracy (0.98) and training efficiency and high resilience toward both noises and steep synaptic depression. These results solve the challenges of SR memristors in the conventional ANN, extending the possibilities of large-scale oxide SR-synaptic arrays for high-density, efficient, and accurate neuromorphic computing.

It is unclear whether the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) is associated with major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) in the general population. A total of 361,644 participants (aged 56.19 ± 8.09 years; 44.79% male) free of a history of MACEs at baseline from the UK Biobank data were included in the analysis. The AIP was calculated using log (triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol). Over a mean follow-up of 12.19 ± 1.60 years, 16,683 participants developed MACEs. After adjustment for traditional risk factors, each 1 unit increase in AIP was associated with a 45.3% higher risk of incident MACEs (hazard ratio (HR), 1.453 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.371-1.540], P < 0.001). Results were similar when individuals were categorized by the AIP quartiles (HR, 1.283 [95% CI 1.217-1.351]; comparing extreme quartiles). The subgroup analyses showed that the association between AIP and risk of incident MACEs was more obvious in female participants who are < 60 years old and free of hypertension or diabetes. Sensitivity analysis included participants without any lipid-lowering medication or excluded incident MACEs in the first 2 years of follow-up confirming the robustness of the findings. Elevated AIP is a risk factor of incident MACEs in the general population, independent of traditional risk factors.Dynamic monitoring of the AIP may help select the population at high risk of cardiovascular events and guide primary prevention.

The large size of K-ion makes the pursuit of stable high-capacity anodes for K-ion batteries (KIBs) a formidable challenge, particularly for high temperature KIBs as the electrode instability becomes more aggravated with temperature climbing. Herein, we demonstrate that a hollow ZnS@C nanocomposite (h-ZnS@C) with a precise shell modulation can resist electrode disintegration to enable stable high-capacity potassium storage at room and high temperature. Based on a model electrode, we identify an interesting structure-function correlation of the h-ZnS@C: with an increase in the shell thickness, the cyclability increases while the rate and capacity decrease, shedding light on the design of high-performance h-ZnS@C anodes via engineering the shell thickness. Typically, the h-ZnS@C anode with a shell thickness of 60 nm can deliver an impressive comprehensive performance at room temperature; the h-ZnS@C with shell thickness increasing to 75 nm can achieve an extraordinary stability (88.6 % capacity retention over 450 cycles) with a high capacity (450 mAh g-1) and a superb rate even at an extreme temperature of 60 °C, which is much superior than those reported anodes. This contribution envisions new perspectives on rational design of functional metal sulfides composite toward high-performance KIBs with insights into the significant structure-function correlation.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy, adverse events, patient compliance, and cost of dual therapy with Ilaprazole-amoxicillin (IA) at high dose versus Ilaprazole-amoxicillin-furazolidone-bismuth (IAFB) quadruple therapy for the Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) infection among Chinese patients. METHODS: 200 patients who had tested positive for H. pylori and undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy after being diagnosed with chronic gastritis participated in this open-label randomized controlled clinical trial. Patients were randomized to Group A and Group B: the 14-day IA dual treatment group (101) and IAFB quadruple treatment group (99). The 13 C urea breath test was conducted to determine whether H. pylori had been eliminated 4-6 weeks after the treatment. Eradication rates, drug-related adverse events, patient compliance, and drug costs were compared between the two treatment groups. RESULTS: Eradication rates in group A were 92.1% and 94.9%, depending on the intention-to-treat (ITT), per-protocol (PP), respectively, which was similar to group B (91.9% and 93.6%). There was no significant difference observed in adverse events between the two groups (P = 0.518). Interestingly, compliance was significantly higher in group A compared to the group B (P = 0.031). In addition, drug costs were significantly lower for group A in comparison to the group B. CONCLUSIONS: IA dual therapy was found to be equally effective, safer and less costly than IAFB quadruple therapy. Therefore, these therapies can be potentially considered as first-line regimens for empirical treatment.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to understand the prevalence and potential risk factors of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in Hainan Province, China. METHODS: We conducted this study in 21 health service stations in 5 cities of Hainan Province from August 2022 to April 2023. We selected the various participants based on a stratified whole-group sampling method. The 14C-UBT was used to analyze H. pylori infection in 3632 participants. We also analyzed the possible relationship between variables and H. pylori infection based on chi-square test and multifactorial logistic regression. The model was evaluated by performing a Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness-of-fit test and plotting receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curves. RESULTS: In total, the results of 3632 eligible participants (age: 14 to 93 years) were included in the analysis. The total prevalence of H. pylori infection in Hainan Province was approximately 38.7%. The prevalence of H. pylori infection was found to increase with age, stabilized in the age group of 45 to 64 years, but peaked in the age group of 65 years and older. In multifactorial analysis, the prevalence of H. pylori infection was positively associated with middle-aged adults (45-64 years), older adults (≥ 65 years), drinking, farmers, natural labor, routinely share utensils, have habit of frequent betel nut consumption, upper gastrointestinal symptoms, and family history of gastric cancer. The factors negatively associated with prevalence included family size ≤ 3, washing hands often before meals, frequent exercise, regular meals, and frequent consumption of fruits and vegetables. In addition, the Hosmer-Lemeshow test showed a good fit (χ2 = 12.983, P = 0.112) and the area under ROC was 0.631 (95%CI: 0.613 ~ 0.649). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of H. pylori infection in Hainan Province was observed to be moderate and closely related to age, local socioeconomic conditions, hygienic status and dietary habits.

Sensitive and reliable detection of the p53 gene plays a significant role in precise cancer targeting and in fundamental research. However, the sensitivity of existing p53 gene detection approaches remains to be improved. Herein, we develop a target recognition assisted-primer exchange reaction (Ta-PER) for sensitive analysis of the p53 gene. Ta-PER was initiated by the recognition of a designed dumbbell structure probe by the p53 gene. In Ta-PER, the primer exchange reaction (PER) was combined with molecular beacon-based chain recycling to construct the signal amplification process. Through integrating target recognition with PER-based signal amplification, Ta-PER was established and exhibited a high detection sensitivity, with a limit of detection as low as 56 fM. In addition, the approach was also used to detect the p53 gene in normal HeLa cells and amatoxin-treated HeLa cells. The high level of the p53 gene in amatoxin-treated HeLa cells, which was approximately 1.67 times higher than that in HeLa cell extract, indicated the apoptosis of cells and suggested the promising prospect of the approach.

CKLF (chemokine-like factor)-MARVEL transmembrane domain containing protein 6 (CMTM6) is a novel regulator to maintain the stability of PD-L1. CMTM6 can colocalize and interact with PD-L1 on the recycling endosomes and cell membrane, preventing PD-L1 from lysosome-mediated degradation and proteasome-mediated degradation thus increasing the half-life of PD-L1 on the cell membrane. The difficulties in obtaining stable full-length PD-L1 and CMTM6 proteins hinder the research on their structures, function as well as related drug development. Using lauryl maltose neopentyl glycol (LMNG) as the optimized detergent and a cell membrane mimetic strategy, we assembled a stable membrane-bound full-length CMTM6-PD-L1 complex with amphipol A8-35. When the PD-1/PD-L1-CMTM6 interactions were analyzed, we found that CMTM6 greatly enhanced the binding and delayed the dissociation of PD-1/PD-L1, thus affecting immunosuppressive signaling and anti-apoptotic signaling. We then used the CMTM6-PD-L1 complex as immunogens to generate immune repertoires in camels, and identified a functional anti-CMTM6 nanobody, called 1A5. We demonstrated that the anti-CMTM6 nanobody greatly decreased T-cell immunosuppression and promoted apoptotic susceptibility of tumor cells in vitro, and mainly relied on the cytotoxic effect of CD8+ T-cells to exert tumor growth inhibitory effects in CT26 tumor-bearing mice. In conclusion, the stable membrane-bound full-length CMTM6-PD-L1 complex has been successfully used in studying PD-1/PD-L1-CMTM6 interactions and CMTM6-targeting drug development, suggesting CMTM6 as a novel tumor immunotherapy target.

Optical biosensors support disease diagnostic applications, offering high accuracy and sensitivity due to label-free detection and their optical resonance enhancement. However, optical biosensors based on noble metal nanoparticles and precise micro-electromechanical system technology are costly, which is an obstacle for their applications. Here, we proposed a biosensor reuse method with nanoscale parylene C film, taking the silicon-on-insulator microring resonator biosensor as an example. Parylene C can efficiently adsorb antibody by one-step modification without any surface treatment, which simplifies the antibody modification process of sensors. Parylene C (20 nm thick) was successfully coated on the surface of the microring to modify anti-carcinoembryonic antigen (anti-CEA) and specifically detect CEA. After sensing, parylene C was successfully removed without damaging the sensing surface for the sensor reusing. The experimental results demonstrate that the sensing response did not change significantly after the sensor was reused more than five times, which verifies the repeatability and reliability of the reusable method by using parylene C. This framework can potentially reduce the cost of biosensors and promote their further applications.

N-n-Butyl haloperidol iodide (F2) is a novel compound that has antiproliferative and antifibrogenic activities. In this study we investigated the therapeutic potential of F2 against liver fibrosis in mice and the underlying mechanisms. Two widely used mouse models of fibrosis was established in mice by injection of either carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) or thioacetamide (TAA). The mice received F2 (0.75, 1.5 or 3 mg·kg-1·d-1, ip) for 4 weeks of fibrosis induction. We showed that F2 administration dose-dependently ameliorated CCl4- or TAA-induced liver fibrosis, evidenced by significant decreases in collagen deposition and c-Jun, TGF-ß receptor II (TGFBR2), α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), and collagen I expression in the liver. In transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-ß1)-stimulated LX-2 cells (a human hepatic stellate cell line) and primary mouse hepatic stellate cells, treatment with F2 (0.1, 1, 10 µM) concentration-dependently inhibited the expression of α-SMA, and collagen I. In LX-2 cells, F2 inhibited TGF-ß/Smad signaling through reducing the levels of TGFBR2; pretreatment with LY2109761 (TGF-ß signaling inhibitor) or SP600125 (c-Jun signaling inhibitor) markedly inhibited TGF-ß1-induced induction of α-SMA and collagen I. Knockdown of c-Jun decreased TGF-ß signaling genes, including TGFBR2 levels. We revealed that c-Jun was bound to the TGFBR2 promoter, whereas F2 suppressed the binding of c-Jun to the TGFBR2 promoter to restrain TGF-ß signaling and inhibit α-SMA and collagen I upregulation. In conclusion, the therapeutic benefit of F2 against liver fibrosis results from inhibition of c-Jun expression to reduce TGFBR2 and concomitant reduction of the responsiveness of hepatic stellate cells to TGF-ß1. F2 may thus be a potentially new effective pharmacotherapy for human liver fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: the relationship between low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and adverse outcomes among the older people remains controversial. OBJECTIVE: to further clarify the association between admission LDL-C levels and cardiovascular mortality (CVM) among oldest old individuals (≥80 years) with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). DESIGN: a prospective cohort study. SETTING: two-centre. SUBJECTS: a consecutive sample of 1,224 oldest old individuals with AMI admitted to Beijing FuWai and Shenzhen FuWai hospitals. METHODS: all individuals were subdivided according to baseline LDL-C levels (<1.8, 1.8-2.6 and ≥ 2.6 mmol/l) and further stratified by high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) concentrations (<10 and ≥10 mg/l). The primary outcome was CVM. The time from admission to the occurrence of CVM or the last follow-up was analysed in Kaplan-Meier and Cox analyses. RESULTS: the median age of the overall population was 82 years. During an average of 24.5 months' follow-up, 299 cardiovascular deaths occurred. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that LDL-C < 1.8 mmol/l group had the highest CVM among oldest old individuals with AMI. Multivariate Cox regression analysis further revealed that compared with those with LDL-C levels <1.8 mmol/l, subjects with LDL-C levels ≥2.6 mmol/l (hazard ratio: 0.67, 95% confidence interval: 0.46-0.98) had significantly lower risk of CVM, especially in those with high hsCRP levels. Moreover, when categorising according to LDL-C and hsCRP together, data showed that individuals with low LDL-C and high hsCRP levels had the highest CVM. CONCLUSIONS: LDL-C < 1.8 mmol/l was associated with a high CVM after AMI in oldest old individuals, especially when combined with high hsCRP levels, which may need to be confirmed by randomised controlled trials.

Trauma is one of the most common conditions in the biomedical field. It is important to identify it quickly and accurately. However, when evanescent trauma occurs, it presents a great challenge to professionals. There are few reports on the establishment of a rapid and accurate trauma identification and prediction model. In this study, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and microscopic spectroscopy (micro-IR) combined with chemometrics were used to establish prediction models for the rapid identification of muscle trauma in humans and rats. The results of the average spectrum, principal component analysis (PCA) and loading maps showed that the differences between the rat muscle trauma group and the rat control group were mainly related to biological macromolecules, such as proteins, nucleic acids and carbohydrates. The differences between the human muscle trauma group and the human control group were mainly related to proteins, polysaccharides, phospholipids and phosphates. Then, a partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) was used to evaluate the classification ability of the training and test datasets. The classification accuracies were 99.10% and 93.69%, respectively. Moreover, a trauma classification and recognition model of human muscle tissue was constructed, and a good classification effect was obtained. The classification accuracies were 99.52% and 91.95%. In conclusion, spectroscopy and stoichiometry have the advantages of being rapid, accurate and objective and of having high resolution and a strong recognition ability, and they are emerging strategies for the identification of evanescent trauma. In addition, the combination of spectroscopy and stoichiometry has great potential in the application of medicine and criminal law under practical conditions.

BACKGROUND: Altica (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is a highly diverse and taxonomically challenging flea beetle genus that has been used to address questions related to host plant specialization, reproductive isolation, and ecological speciation. To further evolutionary studies in this interesting group, here we present a draft genome of a representative specialist, Altica viridicyanea, the first Alticinae genome reported thus far. RESULTS: The genome is 864.8 Mb and consists of 4490 scaffolds with a N50 size of 557 kb, which covered 98.6% complete and 0.4% partial insect Benchmarking Universal Single-Copy Orthologs. Repetitive sequences accounted for 62.9% of the assembly, and a total of 17,730 protein-coding gene models and 2462 non-coding RNA models were predicted. To provide insight into host plant specialization of this monophagous species, we examined the key gene families involved in chemosensation, detoxification of plant secondary chemistry, and plant cell wall-degradation. CONCLUSIONS: The genome assembled in this work provides an important resource for further studies on host plant adaptation and functionally affiliated genes. Moreover, this work also opens the way for comparative genomics studies among closely related Altica species, which may provide insight into the molecular evolutionary processes that occur during ecological speciation.

BACKGROUND: The use of ß-blockers for acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients without heart failure (HF) is controversial, and lacks of evidence in the era of reperfusion and intensive secondary preventions. This study aimed to investigate the prognostic impacts of ß-blockers on patients with ACS but no HF treated by percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). METHODS: A total of 2397 consecutive patients with ACS but no HF treated by PCI were retrospectively recruited from January 2010 to June 2017. Univariable Cox regression was used to assess the prognostic impacts of ß-blockers, followed by adjusted analysis, one-to-one propensity score matching (PSM), and inverse probability treatment weighting (IPTW) analysis, in order to control for systemic between-group differences. The primary outcome was all-cause death. RESULTS: Among the included patients, 2060 (85.9%) were prescribed with ß-blockers at discharge. The median follow-up time was 727 (433-2016) days, with 55 (2.3%) cases of all-cause death. Unadjusted analysis showed that the use of ß-blockers was associated with lower risk of death (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.42, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.23-0.76, P = 0.004), which was sustained in adjusted analysis (HR: 0.53, 95% CI: 0.29-0.98, P = 0.044), PSM analysis (HR: 0.44, 95% CI: 0.20-0.96, P = 0.039) and IPTW analysis (HR: 0.49. 95% CI: 0.35-0.70, P < 0.001). Risk reduction was also seen in ß-blocker users for cardiac death, but not for major adverse cardiovascular events. CONCLUSIONS: The use of ß-blockers was associated with reduced long-term mortality for ACS-PCI patients without HF.

Aim: To better predict the survival of cervical squamous cell carcinoma (CESC) patients, we aimed to construct a signature according to different immune infiltration. Methods: We downloaded the RNA sequences of CESC patients from the Cancer Genome Atlas database. By using single-sample gene set enrichment analysis, we separated the samples into high- and low-immunity groups. Then we separated the samples into training and testing datasets and performed the following analyses: univariate, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator analysis, multivariate Cox regression analyses and weighted gene coexpression network analysis using R software. Gene ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes studies were performed using the Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery website. Results & conclusion: We finally identified a signature with three mRNAs and two lncRNAs: ADGRG5, HSH2D, ZMAT4, RBAKDN and LINC00200. In short, our study constructed an mRNA-lncRNA signature related to immune infiltration to better predict the survival of CESC patients.


Lay abstract Cervical squamous cell carcinoma is a prevalent cancer type among females. Our study was to construct a signature which can predict the overall survival time in cervical squamous cell carcinoma patients. We performed some analysis of genetic expression patterns using a public database of genetic data, and successfully constructed the model which holds a good prediction value.

Sample pretreatment is essential for the analysis of complicated real samples due to their complex matrices and low analyte concentrations. Among all sample pretreatment methods, solid-phase extraction is arguably the most frequently used one. However, the majority of available solid-phase extraction adsorbents suffer from limited selectivity. Molecularly imprinted polymers are a type of tailor-made artificial antibodies and receptors with specific recognition sites for target molecules. Using molecularly imprinted polymers instead of conventional adsorbents can greatly improve the selectivity of solid-phase extraction, and therefore molecularly imprinted polymer-based solid-phase extraction has been widely applied to separation, clean up and/or preconcentration of target analytes in various kinds of real samples. In this article, after a brief introduction, the recent developments and applications of molecularly imprinted polymer-based solid-phase extraction for determination of different analytes in complicated real samples during the 2015-2020 are reviewed systematically, including the solid-phase extraction modes, molecularly imprinted adsorbent types and their preparations, and the practical applications of solid-phase extraction to various real samples (environmental, food, biological, and pharmaceutical samples). Finally, the challenges and opportunities of using molecularly imprinted polymer-based solid-phase extraction for real sample analysis are discussed.
