RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Although magnetically induced hyperthermia has shown great efficiency in the treatment of solid tumors, it is still a challenge to avoid incomplete ablation or overtreatment. In this study, we applied magnetomotive ultrasound shear wave elastography (MMUS-SWE) as a tool for real-time image guidance and feedback in the magnetic hyperthermia (MH) process. We called this new method as magneto-acoustic theranostic approach (MATA). METHODS: In MATA, a ferromagnetic particle (fMP) was simultaneously used as a thermoseed for MH and a shear wave source for MMUS-SWE. The fMP was excited by a high-frequency magnetic field to induce the heating effect for MH. Meanwhile, the fMP was stimulated by a pulsed magnetic field to generate shear wave propagation for MMUS-SWE. Thus, the changes in elastic modulus surrounding fMP can be used to estimate the therapy effect of MH. RESULTS: The phantom and in vitro experiments were conducted to verify the feasibility of MATA, which has good performance in magnetothermal conversion and treatment efficacy feedback. The shear wave speed of the isolated pork liver changed significantly after the MH process, which varied from about 1.36 to 4.85 m/s. CONCLUSIONS: Preliminary results proved that changes in elastic modulus could be useful to estimate the therapy effect of MH. We expect that MATA, which is the integration of MMUS-SWE and MH, will be a novel theranostic method for clinical translation.

RESUMO

Rice stripe mosaic virus (RSMV) is an emerging pathogen which significantly reduces rice yields in the southern region of China. It is transmitted by the leafhopper Recilia dorsalis, which overwinters in rice fields. Our field investigations revealed that RSMV infection causes delayed rice heading, resulting in a large number of green diseased plants remaining in winter rice fields. This creates a favorable environment for leafhoppers and viruses to overwinter, potentially contributing to the rapid spread and epidemic of the disease. Next, we explored the mechanism by which RSMV manipulates the developmental processes of the rice plant. A rice heading-related E3 ubiquitin ligase, Heading date Associated Factor 1 (HAF1), was found to be hijacked by the RSMV-encoded P6. The impairment of HAF1 function affects the ubiquitination and degradation of downstream proteins, HEADING DATE 1 and EARLY FLOWERING3, leading to a delay in rice heading. Our results provide new insights into the development regulation-based molecular interactions between virus and plant, and highlights the importance of understanding virus-vector-plant tripartite interactions for effective disease management strategies.

RESUMO

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a clinicopathological syndrome characterized by excessive deposition of fatty acids in the liver. Further deterioration leads to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma, creating a heavy burden on human health and the social economy. Currently, there are no effective and specific drugs for the treatment of NAFLD. Therefore, it is important to further investigate the pathogenesis of NAFLD and explore effective therapeutic targets for the prevention and treatment of the disease. Six-transmembrane epithelial antigen of prostate 3 (STEAP3), a STEAP family protein, is a metalloreductase. Studies have shown that it can participate in the regulation of liver ischemia-reperfusion injury, hepatocellular carcinoma, myocardial hypertrophy, and other diseases. In this study, we found that the expression of STEAP3 is upregulated in NAFLD. Deletion of STEAP3 inhibits the development of NAFLD in vivo and in vitro, whereas its overexpression promotes palmitic acid/oleic acid stimulation-induced lipid deposition in hepatocytes. Mechanistically, it interacts with transforming growth factor beta-activated kinase 1 (TAK1) to regulate the progression of NAFLD by promoting TAK1 phosphorylation and activating the TAK1-c-Jun N-terminal kinase/p38 signaling pathway. Taken together, our results provide further insight into the involvement of STEAP3 in liver pathology.

RESUMO

Electrochemically mediated Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox-coupled uranium extraction can efficiently reduce the cell voltage of electrochemical uranium extraction (EUE). How to regulate the surface structure to enhance the uranium acyl ion adsorption capacity and strengthen the Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox cycle process is crucial for EUE. In this work, we developed surface sulfated nanoreduced iron (S-NRI) for EUE and exhibited improved properties for EUE at an ultralow cell voltage (-0.1 V). Compared with a nanoreduced iron (NRI) adsorbent, S-NRI displayed faster electrochemical extraction kinetics properties and higher extraction efficiency and capacity for uranium. In a more complex seawater electrolyte containing uranyl ion concentration ranging from 1 to 20 ppm, the removal efficiency could reach almost ∼100% after EUE for 24 h. At a higher 50 ppm uranium acyl ion concentration in a seawater electrolyte, S-NRI exhibited higher extraction capacity (755.03 mg/g), which is better than 528.53 mg/g of NRI at a cell voltage of -0.1 V. Outstanding EUE property could be attributed to the fact that sulfate species (M-SO42-) on the S-NRI surface not only enhanced selective adsorption of uranyl ions but also strengthened the Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox cycle, which accelerated electron transfer between Fe(II) and U(VI), promoted the regeneration of Fe(II) active sites, and finally enhanced the EUE property.

RESUMO

Improving the adsorption selectivity, enhancing the extraction capacity, and ensuring the structural stability of the adsorbent are the key to realize the high efficiency recovery of uranium. In this work, we utilized the strong Lewis acid-base interaction between S2- and U(VI)O22+ coupling rapid electron transfer at the MnS/U(VI)O22+ solid-liquid interface to achieve excellent selectivity, high adsorption capacity, and rapid extraction of uranium. The as-synthesized MnS adsorbent exhibited an ultrahigh uranium extraction capacity (2457.05 mg g-1) and a rapid rate constant (K = 9.11 × 10-4 g h-1 mg-1) in seawater with 100.7 ppm of UO2(NO3)2 electrolyte. The kinetic simulation reveals that this adsorption process is a chemical adsorption process and conforms to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating electron transfer at the MnS/U(VI)O22+ solid-liquid interface. The relevant (quasi) in situ spectroscopic characterization and theoretical calculation results further revealed that the outstanding uranium extraction property of MnS could be attributed to the highly selective UO22+ adsorption of MnS with lower adsorption energy as a result of the strong interaction between S2- and UO22+ and the rapid mass transfer and interface electron transfer from S2- and low-valent Mn(II) to U(VI)O22+.

RESUMO

Visualization of photothermal therapy mediated by photothermal transduction agents (PTAs) is important to promote individual treatment of patients with low side effects. Photoacoustic detection has emerged as a promising noninvasive method for the visualization of PTAs distribution but still has limitations in temperature measurement, including poor measurement accuracy and low tissue penetration depth. In this study, we developed biocompatible semiconducting polymer dots (SPD) for in situ coupling of photothermal and photoacoustic detection in the near-infrared II window. SPD has dual photostability under pulsed laser and continuous-wave laser irradiation with a photothermal conversion efficiency of 42.77%. Meanwhile, a strong correlation between the photoacoustic signal and the actual temperature of SPD can be observed. The standard deviation of SPD-mediated photoacoustic thermometry can reach 0.13 °C when the penetration depth of gelatin phantom is 9.49 mm. Preliminary experimental results in vivo show that SPD-mediated photoacoustic signal has a high signal-to-noise ratio, as well as good performance in temperature response and tumor enrichment. Such a study not only offers a new nanomaterial for the visualization of photothermal therapy but will also promote the theranostic platform for clinical applications.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the accuracy of newer generation intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation formulas (EVO 2.0 and Kane) with established formulas (Barrett Universal II, Haigis and SRK/T) in pediatric cataract patients. METHODS: Retrospective study. We enrolled 110 eyes (110 patients) in Eye Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University. All patients underwent uneventful cataract surgery and implanted with posterior chamber IOL in the bag. We calculate the mean prediction errors (PE) and percentage within 1 diopter (D) at 1 month to assess the accuracy, and percentage > 2D was defined as prediction accident. Then, we performed subgroup analysis according to age and axial length (AL). RESULTS: The mean age and AL were 37.45 ± 23.28 months and 21.16 ± 1.29 mm. The mean PE for all patients was as follows: Barrett (- 0.30), EVO (0.18), Haigis (- 0.74), Kane (- 0.36), and SRK/T (0.58), p < 0.001. In addition, EVO and SRK/T formulas were relatively accurate in patients younger than 24 months and with AL ≤ 21 mm, while EVO got lower prediction accident rate than SRK/T (3/41 vs 8/41, 4/52 vs 5/52). Moreover, Barrett, EVO, and Kane formulas achieved better accuracy and lower prediction accident rate in patients older than 24 months and with AL > 21 mm (both > 51/69 and 43/58, and < 3/69 and 3/58). CONCLUSIONS: In patients older than 24 months and with AL > 21 mm, Barrett, EVO, and Kane formulas were relatively accurate, while in patients younger than 24 months and with AL ≤ 21 mm, EVO was more accurate, followed by SRK/T formula.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate corneal epithelial and topographic changes caused by two commercial myopia orthokeratology (ortho-k) designs. METHODS: Twenty-six subjects fitted with vision shape treatment (VST) lenses and 30 subjects fitted with corneal reshaping therapy (CRT) lenses were reviewed 1 day, 1 week, and 1 month after lens initiation. A spectral-domain optical coherence tomography system was used to create epithelial maps that were in turn used to determine the average epithelial thickness of each zone and the diameter of treatment zone. By measuring the topographic tangential differential map, the treatment zone diameter and the power and width of the high convex zone (HCZ) were obtained. All epithelial thicknesses and topographic corneal variations recorded were analyzed. RESULTS: At the central zone, the epithelial thickness changes (△ET) decreased significantly after 1 day of ortho-k in two groups. At 2- to 9-mm peripheral zone, ortho-k increased △ET until 1 week in the VST group, whereas it kept increasing in the CRT group after 1 week. At 1 month, the central △ET is -9.51±2.38 mm in the VST group, which was comparable to -8.72±3.43 mm in the CRT group. The nasal HCZ power and the △ET of nasal and inferior nasal were significantly larger in the CRT group. A positive correlation was found between the HCZ power and △ET generated by VST-type lenses inferiorly and temporally. For the CRT group, a positive correlation was found between inferior HCZ power and △ET. CONCLUSIONS: At the early stage of ortho-k, epithelial thickness and topography change quickly and simultaneously. Epithelial changes were in line with corneal topography reshaping. Epithelial and optical remodelling were affected by different lens types.

RESUMO

Ultrasound computed tomography (USCT) can visualize a target with multiple imaging contrasts, which were demonstrated individually previously. Here, to improve the imaging quality, the dynamic speed of sound (SoS) map derived from the transmission USCT will be adapted for the correction of the acoustic speed variation in the reflection USCT. The variable SoS map was firstly restored via the optimized simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique with the time of flights selected from the transmitted ultrasonic signals. Then, the multi-stencils fast marching method was used to calculate the delay time from each element to the grids in the imaging field of view. Finally, the delay time in conventional constant-speed-assumed delay and sum (DAS) beamforming would be replaced by the practical computed delay time to achieve higher delay accuracy in the reflection USCT. The results from the numerical, phantom, and in vivo experiments show that our approach enables multi-modality imaging, accurate target localization, and precise boundary detection with the full-view fast imaging performance. The proposed method and its implementation are of great value for accurate, fast, and multi-modality USCT imaging, particularly suitable for highly acoustic heterogeneous medium.

RESUMO

Nano-reduced iron (NRI) is a promising uranium adsorbent due to its strong reducibility and good selectivity, but it still faces the challenges of slow kinetics, limited and non-renewable active sites. In this work, we realized high efficiency uranium extraction under ultra-low cell voltage (-0.1 V) in seawater with 20 ppm UO2 (NO3 )2 solution by coupling electrochemical mediated FeII /FeIII redox and uranium extraction. The adsorption capacity and extraction efficiency of NRI after electrochemical uranium extraction (EUE) could reach 452 mg/g and 99.1 %, respectively. Combined with quasi-operando/operando characterization technologies, we clarified the mechanism of EUE and revealed that continuously regenerating FeII active sites by electroreduction could significantly enhance the property of EUE. This work here provides a new electrochemical mediated and low energy consumption uranium extraction strategy which also provides a reference for other metal resource recovery.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: We have improved and named a new reverse rolling-mat type lymph node dissection, which effectively solves the dilemma faced by the traditional lymph node dissection in hand-assisted laparoscopic D2 radical gastrectomy through the optimization of the surgical procedure. However, the relevant clinical data are still scarce. The study aims to compare the clinical effects of two surgical procedure and explore the safety and feasibility of "reverse procedure". STUDY DESIGN: The clinicopathological data of 195 patients who underwent hand-assisted D2 radical total gastrectomy (HALTG) in our hospital from January 2011 to September 2017 were collected. A retrospective case-control study was used to compare the clinical outcomes of the two patterns of lymph node dissection. Among them, 89 patients underwent "cabbage type" lymph node dissection and 106 patients underwent the "reverse procedure" lymph node dissection. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between the two groups of patients in terms of gender, age, tumor location, incision length, postoperative hospitalization duration, pathological classification, recent complications, long-term recurrence and metastasis. The operation time of "cabbage type" group was shorter than that of "reverse procedure" group (178.35 ± 31.52 min vs 191.25 ± 32.77 min; P = 0.006). While, in the "reverse procedure" group, intraoperative blood loss was less (249.4 ± 143.12 vs 213.58 ± 101.43; P = 0.049), and there were more numbers of lymph nodes dissected (18.04 ± 7.00 vs 32.25 ± 14.23; P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The pattern of reverse rolling-mat type lymph node dissection in HALTG perform well in terms of safety and feasibility.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is rapidly becoming one of the most common liver diseases. Ultrasound elastography has been used for the diagnosis of NAFLD. However, clinical research on steatosis by elastography technology has mainly focused on steatosis with fibrosis or non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), while steatosis without fibrosis has been poorly studied. Moreover, the relationship between liver viscoelasticity and steatosis grade is not clear. In this study, we evaluated the degree of liver steatosis in a simple steatosis rat model using shear wave elastography (SWE). RESULTS: The viscoelasticity values of 69 rats with hepatic steatosis were measured quantitatively by SWE in vivo and validated by a dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) test. Pathological sections were used to determine the steatosis grade for each rat. The results showed that the elasticity values µ obtained by the two methods followed the same trend, and µ is significantly correlated with liver steatosis. The Pearson's correlation coefficients indicate that [Formula: see text] obtained by SWE is positively linear correlated with DMA (r = 0.628, p = 7.85 × 10-9). However, the viscosity values [Formula: see text] obtained by SWE were relatively independent of those obtained by DMA with a correlation coefficient of - 0.01. The combined Voigt elasticity measurements have high validity in the prediction of steatosis (S0 vs. S1-S4), with an AUROC of 0.755 (95% CI 0.6175-0.8925, p < 0.01) and the optimal cutoff value was 2.08 kPa with a sensitivity of 78% and specificity of 63%. CONCLUSION: SWE might have the feasibility to be introduced as an auxiliary technique for NAFLD patients in clinical settings. However, the viscosity results measured by SWE and DMA are significantly different, because the two methods work in different frequency bands.

RESUMO

Ovarian cancer (OC) is one of the deadliest malignancies of the female reproductive system. The present study focused on the role of Nucleolar spindle-associated protein 1 (NuSAP1) in OC. Relative expression of NuSAP1 was detected in OC tissues as well as cells. After knocking down NuSAP1 with lentivirus-mediated shRNA and verifying the knockdown efficiency via quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blot assays, the cell proliferation, apoptosis, and cell cycle were determined using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide, colony formation, and flow cytometry, respectively. Transwell assay was conducted to detect the migration and invasion of OC cells. It was showed that NuSAP1 was abundantly expressed in OC tissues and cell lines. After knocking down NuSAP1 in OC cells, in addition to significantly inhibiting proliferation and colony forming ability, it also promotes apoptosis and affects cell cycle distribution. Moreover, cells in the shNuSAP1 group showed significantly suppressed migration and invasion ability compared with that in the shCtrl group. In conclusion, NuSAP1 may act as an oncogenic factor in OC and therefore might serve as an indicator for prognosis and therapeutic target for OC treatment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Salmonella is one of the main causative agents of diarrhea which results in substantial disease burden. To determine the prevalence, serotype distribution, and antimicrobial resistance profiles of clinical Salmonella isolates in Shenzhen, a 6-year surveillance study was conducted. RESULTS: A total of 297 (5.7%) Salmonella strains were isolated from stool samples from 5239 patients. Among the 42 serotypes identified, serotype Typhimurium was the most common one which represented 39.7% of the isolates (118), followed by serotype Enteritidis (71, 23.9%), London (12, 4.0%), 4, 5, 12: i: - (11, 3.7%), and Senftenberg (8, 2.7%). A high frequency of resistance was found in ampicillin (70.6%), piperacillin (64.5%), tetracycline (63.5%), and streptomycin (54.3%). Resistance to ampicillin and tetracycline was observed in 95.3% of S. Typhimurium isolates; and nalidixic acid in 93.1% of S. Enteritidis isolates. Resistance to 5 or more antimicrobial agents was found in 78.8% of S. Typhimurium and 69.0% of S. Enteritidis isolates. A decreased susceptibility to ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin was associated with amino acid alteration in gyrA gene. Point mutations without amino acid changes were seen in gyrB, parC, and parE genes. CONCLUSIONS: A broad range of serotypes are responsible for Salmonellosis in Shenzhen, with Enteritidis and Typhimurium being the most common serotypes. The high level of antibiotic resistance is of public health significance and ongoing monitoring combined with rational use of antibiotics are recommended. Point mutations in gyrA gene might play an important role in the resistance to fluoroquinolones.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) is an emerging cancer therapy, and in contrast to photodynamic therapy, could non-invasively reach deep-seated tissues and locally activates a sonosensitizer preferentially accumulated in the tumor area to produce cytotoxicity effects. In comparison with traditional treatments, SDT may serve as an alternative strategy for human colon cancer treatment. Here, we investigated the sonodynamic effect using sinoporphyrin sodium (DVDMS) as a novel sonosensitizer on human colon cancer cells in vitro. RESULTS: The absorption spectra of DVDMS revealed maximum absorption at 363 nm wavelength and emission peak at 635 nm. Confocal microscopy images revealed the DVDMS was primarily localized in the cytoplasm, while no evident signal was detected within the nuclei. Flow cytometry analysis showed rapid intracellular uptake of DVDMS by two types of human colon cancer cells (HCT116 and RKO). Cell viability of HCT116 was tolerant with the concentration of DVDMS up to 20 µg/mL, while the case of RKO was 5 µg/mL. In comparison with the control group, the SDT-treated groups of these two types of human colon cancer cells showed significant increase in cellular apoptosis and necrosis ratio. Increased intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production was detected, indicating the involvement of ROS in mediating SDT effects. CONCLUSION: DVDMS results an effective sonosensitizer for the ultrasound-mediated cancer cell killing, and its anticancer effect seems to rely on its ability to produce ROS under ultrasound exposure.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The interaction between tumor microenvironment and tumor cells plays a key role in tumor progression. However, the mechanisms by which this interaction promotes the transdifferentiation of normal fibroblasts (NFs) to cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are still unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate whether ovarian cancer (OvCa) cells-derived microRNAs were involved in the transition of resident fibroblasts to CAFs, and in promoting tumorigenesis. METHODS: CAFs and NFs were isolated from the same ovarian site in OvCa and noncancerous prophylactic oophorectomy specimens. The effect of exosomes on the motility of CAFs or NFs was analyzed by wound healing and Transwell assays. The expression of CAFs marker α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) and fibroblast activated protein (FAP) were determined by quantitative real-time PCR and Western blotting. A luciferase reporter assay was used to test the interaction between miR-124 and sphingosine kinase 1 (SPHK1). RESULTS: NFs with downregulated miR-124 displayed the characteristics of CAFs, including overexpression of α-SMA and FAP and increased migratory and invasive ability. Overexpression of miR-124 in CAFs reversed some traits of NFs. Human ovarian surface epithelial cells-secreted miR-124 could be transferred via exosomes to CAFs and resulted in decreased α-SMA and FAP expression and attenuated cell motility. Moreover, our finding showed that the expression of SPHK1, a potential target of miR-124, was significantly elevated in CAFs. CONCLUSIONS: The present study provides important and novel perspective into OvCa CAF differentiation and extracellular matrix remodeling, which trigger the tumor progression.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The occurrence of presbyopia and cataract is closely related to changes in the mechanical properties of the crystalline lens. There are no established methods so far for in vivo assessment. By introducing ultrasound elastography, we proposed group velocity (Vg) of an induced shear wave as a new biomarker to characterize the mechanical properties of the lens in our previous study. Here, we investigated the effect of the ultrasound frequency on measurement accuracy and validated the results with a conventional ex vivo compression testing. We also demonstrated a change trend in Vg and its correlation with age in a rabbit model. METHODS: Eight New Zealand white rabbits were fed normally from the fourth to seventh month. An ultrasound elastography system was developed to measure Vgin vivo on every eye once per month. The performances when using a high-frequency (L22-11v) and low-frequency (L11-4v) probe were compared. Rabbits were sacrificed after in vivo measurements by the end of the seventh month and this was followed by ex vivo ultrasound measurements and conventional compression tests on the extracted lenses. RESULTS: The results demonstrated that there were no significance differences in Vg between measurements with high-frequency (USE-HF) and low-frequency (USE-LF) probes in the same month-age group. The mean Vg and the standard deviation of four rabbits that were 7 months old were 2.37 ±â€¯0.24  m/s, 2.36 ±â€¯0.25 m/s, 2.43 ±â€¯0.26 m/s and 2.44 ±â€¯0.38 m/s, with USE-HF for ex vivo and in vivo measurements and USE-LF for ex vivo and in vivo measurements, respectively. There were no significant differences (p > 0.05) and they were all in agreement with the results of compression tests, which was 16.16 ±â€¯1.84 kPa in Young's modulus. The results also showed that Vg increased with age. In combination with the results of our previous study, Vg showed a relatively sharp increase from 2 to 5 months, while it had a slight increase from 5 to 7 months. CONCLUSIONS: The USE-HF and USE-LF has comparable accuracy in Vg measurements while USE-HF had an advantage regarding better spatial resolution. The change trend of Vg was in accord with the growth phase of New Zealand white rabbits, which usually results in sexual maturity at 5 months old. This implies that Vg can be used as a biomarker parameter for evaluating the mechanical properties of the lens undergoing physiological changes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Rice stripe mosaic virus (RSMV) is a tentative new Cytorhabdovirus species in family Rhabdoviridae transmitted by the leafhopper Recilia dorsalis. Although the virus was first detected in southern China in 2015, few studies have investigated rice symptoms and yield losses caused by RSMV infection. METHODS: In this study, we observed and systematically compared symptoms of three virally infected, representative varieties of indica, hybrid and japonica rice and determined the yield parameters of the artificially inoculated plants. RESULTS: The three RSMV-infected cultivated rice varieties exhibited slight dwarfing, striped mosaicism, stiff, crinkled or even twisted leaves, an increased number of tillers, delayed heading, cluster-shaped shortening of panicles and mostly unfilled grains. Slight differences in symptom occurrence time were observed under different environmental conditions. For example, mosaic symptoms appeared earlier and crinkling symptoms appeared later, with both symptoms later receding in some infected plants. Yield losses due to RSMV also differed among varieties. The most serious yield reduction was experienced by indica rice (cv. Meixiangzhan), followed by hybrid indica rice (cv. Wuyou 1179) and then japonica (cv. Nipponbare). Single panicle weight, seed setting rate and 1000-kernel weight were reduced in the three infected varieties compared with healthy plants-by 85.42, 94.85 and 31.56% in Meixiangzhan; 52.43, 53.06 and 25.65% in Wuyou 1179 and 25.53, 49.32 and 23.86% in Nipponbare, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings contribute basic data for field investigations, formulation of prevention and control strategies and further study of the pathogenesis of RSMV.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Surgery is the gold standard therapy for patients with early-stage non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) may provide as an alternative for patients who are medically inoperable or refuse surgical resection. The optimal treatment (SBRT or surgery) for patients with early-stage NSCLC is not clear. METHODS: A systematic search was performed from PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library. Study heterogeneity and publication bias were estimated. RESULTS: Fourteen cohort studies involving 1438 participants (719 who received SBRT and 719 who received surgery) were included in the meta-analysis. The main bias sources between the two groups, such as age, gender, tumor diameter, forced expiratory volume in 1 s, and Charlson comorbidity index were matched. The surgery was associated with a better overall survival (OS) and long-term distant control (DC) for early-stage NSCLC. The pooled OR and 95% confidence interval (CI) for 1-y, 3-y, 5-y OS, and 5-y DC were 1.56 (1.12-2.15), 1.86 (1.50-2.31), 2.43 (1.80-3.28), and 2.74 (1.12-6.67), respectively. No difference was found between the treatments in the 1-y and 3-y disease-free survival; 1-y, 3-y and 5-y locoregional control; or 1-y and 3-y DC. CONCLUSIONS: Our results found a superior OS and long-term DC for early-stage NSCLC after surgery compared with SBRT after propensity score matching.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The pathological or physiological changes of a crystalline lens directly affect the eye accommodation and transmittance, and then they increase the risk of presbyopia and cataracts for people in the middle and old age groups. There is no universally accepted quantitative method to measure the lens' mechanical properties in vivo so far. This study aims to investigate the possibility of assessing the age-related stiffness change of crystalline lens by acoustic-radiation-force-based ultrasound elastography (ARF-USE) in a rabbit model in vivo. METHODS: There were 13 New Zealand white rabbits that were divided into four groups and fed normally until they were 60 (n = 4), 90 (n = 2), 120 (n = 4), and 150 (n = 3) days old, respectively. An ARF-USE platform was built based on the Verasonics™ Vantage 256 system. The shear waves were excited and traced in the lens by a linear ultrasound probe after a rabbit was anaesthetized. RESULTS: The average group velocities were 1.38 ± 0.2 m/s, 2.06 ± 0.3 m/s, 2.07 ± 0.29 m/s, and 2.30 ± 0.28 m/s, respectively, for the four groups of rabbits. The results shows that the group velocity has a strong correlation with the day age (r = 0.84, p < 1 × 10-7) and the weight (r = 0.83, p < 1×10-7) of the rabbits while the maximum displacement has no correlations with the day age (r = 0.27, p > 0.1) and the weight (r = 0.32, p > 0.1). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that the group velocity measured by ARF-USE had a strong correlation with age-related stiffness in a rabbit model, suggesting that group velocity is a good biomarker to characterize the stiffness of a crystalline lens. This study also demonstrated the feasibility of using this USE technique to assess the mechanical properties of the lens in vivo for clinical or research purposes.
