Peritrophins are peritrophic membrane (PM) proteins that can interact with chitin fibers via chitin-binding domains. Peritrophins have essential roles in providing porosity and strength to the PM that lines the shrimp midgut. Acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND), caused by strains of V. parahaemolyticus, is known to initially colonize the shrimp stomach and simultaneously disrupt its structural barriers (e.g., cuticle or epithelial tissues) to reach the hepatopancreas. Although stomach and hepatopancreas were identified as target tissues involved in AHPND pathogenesis, our results indicated that peritrophin in peritrophic membrane has a crucial role in determining not only colonization of AHPND-causing bacteria but also their tissue distribution. As the interaction between LvPeritrophin (LvPT) and WSSV (white spot syndrome virus) is not well understood, we noted that LvPT expression was upregulated in shrimp stomach challenged with either WSSV or AHPND. In an in vitro pathogen binding assay, there was strong binding of recombinant LvPT WSSV and AHPND-causing V. parahaemolyticus, and various bacteria. Furthermore, dsRNA-mediated LvPT silencing inhibited WSSV gene expression and viral genome replication. However, downregulation of LvPT gene expression increased copies of AHPND-causing bacteria in shrimp digestive tract, and facilitated bacterial colonization in stomach. In conclusion, we speculated that LvPT might regulate bacterial colonization during AHPND, whereas in WSSV infection, LvPT silencing favored the host. Although recombinant LvPT had strong binding with WSSV, the precise role of LvPT in WSSV infection needs further investigation. These findings increased our understanding of host-pathogen interactions in AHPND and WSSV infection that can be applied in shrimp aquaculture for developing effective antibacterial and antiviral strategies.

INTRODUCTION: Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a standard of care for brain metastases (BM) patients, yet large BM are at a greater risk for radionecrosis and local progression (LP). Concomitant bevacizumab and radiotherapy has been shown to improve outcomes in primary and metastatic brain tumors. This retrospective study investigated the efficacy and safety of concurrent bevacizumab and SRS for large BM. METHODS: From 2015 to 2019, patients with a BM diameter ≥ 2 cm who received either combination therapy (n = 49, SRS + BVZ group), or SRS alone (n = 73, SRS group) were enrolled. Bevacizumab was given peri-radiosurgically with a 2-week interval. Radiographic response was assessed using the RECIST version 1.1. Competing risk and logistic regression analysis were performed to evaluate prognostic factors. RESULTS: Radiographic response was achieved in 41 patients (84%) in the SRS + BVZ group and 37 patients (51%) in the SRS group (p = 0.001). In the multivariate regression analysis, concurrent bevacizumab was independently associated with a better radiographic response (p = 0.003). The cumulative incidences of LP and ≥ grade 2 radionecrosis at 12 months between the SRS + BVZ group and SRS group were 2% versus 6.8%, and 14.3% versus 14.6%, respectively. For patients with BM size ≥ 3 cm, the cumulative incidence of LP was significantly lower in the SRS + BVZ group (p = 0.03). No ≥ grade 4 toxicity was observed in either group. CONCLUSIONS: Concurrent bevacizumab and SRS for large BM is highly effective, with a better radiographic response and minimal excessive treatment-related toxicities. Peri-radiosurgical bevacizumab preferentially reduced the risk of LP, especially for BM size ≥ 3 cm.

Vertebral fractures affect approximately 30% of myeloma patients and lead to a poor impact on survival and life quality. In general, age and body mass index (BMI) are reported to have an important role in vertebral fractures. However, the triangle relationship among age, BMI, and vertebral fractures is still unclear in newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (NDMM) patients. This study recruited consecutive 394 patients with NDMM at Taipei Veterans General Hospital between January 1, 2005 and December 31, 2015. Risk factors for vertebral fractures in NDMM patients were collected and analyzed. The survival curves were demonstrated using Kaplan-Meier estimate. In total, 301 (76.4%) NDMM patients were enrolled in the cohort. In the median follow-up period of 18.0 months, the median survival duration in those with vertebral fractures ≥ 2 was shorter than those with vertebral fracture < 2 (59.3 vs 28.6 months; P = 0.017). In multivariate Poisson regression, BMI < 18.5 kg/m2 declared increased vertebral fractures compared with BMI ≥ 24.0 kg/m2 (adjusted RR, 2.79; 95% CI, 1.44-5.43). In multivariable logistic regression, BMI < 18.5 kg/m2 was an independent risk factor for vertebral fractures ≥ 2 compared with BMI ≥ 24.0 kg/m2 (adjusted OR, 6.05; 95% CI, 2.43-15.08). Among age stratifications, patients with both old age and low BMI were at a greater risk suffering from increased vertebral fractures, especially in patients > 75 years and BMI < 18.5 kg/m2 (adjusted RR, 12.22; 95% CI, 3.02-49.40). This is the first study that demonstrated that age had a significant impact on vertebral fractures in NDMM patients with low BMI. Elder patients with low BMI should consider to routinely receive spinal radiographic examinations and regular follow-up.

Importance: Isotretinoin is hypothesized to contribute to the development of psychiatric disorders, but the epidemiological association and risk factors associated with psychiatric disorders among isotretinoin users remain unclear. Objective: To clarify the absolute and relative risk and risk factors associated with suicide and psychiatric disorders among isotretinoin users. Data Sources: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched from inception until January 24, 2023. Study Selection: Randomized trials and observational studies were selected if they reported the absolute risk, relative risk, and risk factors for suicide and psychiatric disorders among isotretinoin users. Data Extraction and Synthesis: Relevant data were extracted and risk of bias was evaluated at the study level using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Data were pooled using inverse variance-weighted meta-analyses. Heterogeneity was measured using the I2 statistic, and meta-regression analyses were performed. Main Outcomes and Measures: Absolute risk (percentage), relative risks (risk ratios [RR]), and risk factors (RR) of suicide and psychiatric disorders among isotretinoin users. Results: A total of 25 studies including 1 625 891 participants were included in the review and 24 in the meta-analysis. Among the included studies, participants' average age ranged from 16 to 38 years, and distribution by sex ranged from 0% to 100% male. The 1-year pooled absolute risk from between 2 and 8 studies of completed suicide, suicide attempt, suicide ideation, and self-harm were each less than 0.5%, while that of depression was 3.83% (95% CI, 2.45-5.93; I2 = 77%) in 11 studies. Isotretinoin users were less likely than nonusers to attempt suicide at 2 years (RR, 0.92; 95% CI, 0.84-1.00; I2 = 0%), 3 years (RR, 0.86; 95% CI, 0.77-0.95; I2 = 0%), and 4 years (RR, 0.85; 95% CI, 0.72-1.00; I2 = 23%) following treatment. Isotretinoin was not associated with the risk of all psychiatric disorders (RR, 1.08; 95% CI, 0.99-1.19; I2 = 0%). Study-level meta-regression found that studies with participants of older age reported lower 1-year absolute risk of depression, while those with a higher percentage of male participants reported a higher 1-year absolute risk of completed suicide. Conclusions and Relevance: The findings suggest that at a population level, isotretinoin users do not have increased risk of suicide or psychiatric conditions but may instead have a lower risk of suicide attempts at 2 to 4 years following treatment. While these findings are reassuring, clinicians should continue to practice holistic psychodermatologic care and monitor patients for signs of mental distress during isotretinoin treatment.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, relapsing inflammatory disorder that requires long-term treatment to achieve optimal control. Topical corticosteroids or calcineurin inhibitors are the mainstay of treatment, but the safety and efficacy of their daily use remain a concern. Here, we report a double-layered poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA)/sodium hyaluronate (HA) microneedle (MN) patch as a long-acting formulation for sustained delivery of natural polyphenols, curcumin (CUR) and gallic acid (GA), into the inflamed skin. Upon insertion into the skin, the HA layer is rapidly dissolved within 5 min for triggering GA release; the PLGA tip is embedded into the dermis for sustained release of CUR for 2 months. Initially, CUR and GA are simultaneously released from the MNs to exert synergistic antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, thus promptly relieving AD symptoms. After the complete release of GA, the extended CUR release can maintain the improvement obtained for at least 56 days. Our results revealed that compared with the CUR-only MN and untreated AD groups, the administration of CUR/GA-loaded MNs not only rapidly reduced the dermatitis score from Day 2 but also significantly inhibited epidermal hyperplasia and mast cell accumulation, reduced serum IgE and histamine levels, and downregulated reactive oxygen species production in the skin lesions of Nc/Nga mice on Day 56. These findings demonstrated that the double-layered PLGA/HA MN patch can serve as an effective dual-polyphenol delivery system for rapid and long-term management of AD.

BACKGROUND: Remote reporting is an important preventive measure against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) for radiology departments; it reduces the chance of cross-infections between coworkers. The purpose of this study was to evaluate how the preferred locations that radiologists filed reports from changed in response to COVID-19 by measuring the use of internal teleradiology workstations. METHODS: Data were obtained from the radiological information system (RIS) database at our institution, which recorded the reporting workstation for each radiological examination. The reporting activities in 2021 were divided into computed radiography (CR) and computed tomography (CT)/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) groups. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to measure differences in the use of off-site workstations in prepandemic, midpandemic, and postpandemic periods. RESULTS: There were statistically significant increases in the number of reports filed from off-site workstations for each attending physician from the prepandemic period to the midpandemic period in both the CR (15.1%-25.4%, p = 0.041) and CT/MRI (18.9%-28.7%, p = 0.006) groups. There was no significant difference noted between the prepandemic and postpandemic periods for either the CR (15.1% vs 18.4%, p = 0.727) or CT/MRI group (18.9% vs 23.3%, p = 0.236). CONCLUSION: In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, radiologists used internal teleradiology to report CR and CT/MRI examinations significantly more frequently. In contrast to the predictions of previous studies, the use of internal teleradiology returned to baseline levels after the pandemic was under control.

BACKGROUND: Reporting the findings from radiologic images is an important method for radiologists to communicate with referring physicians. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the recommendations for additional imaging (RAIs) after abdominal computed tomography (CT) studies for abdominal magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. METHODS: The institutional review board approved this retrospective study, which includes data collected from the radiology information system (RIS) database of a tertiary medical referral center. Associations between abdominal CT and subsequent abdominal MR were recorded. The effectiveness of RAIs in an abdominal report was determined. The influence of the wording and the location of the RAIs were also analyzed. RESULTS: The presence of RAIs in an abdominal CT report for an abdominal MR examination was more likely to result in a subsequent MR examination within 120 days (36.7% vs. 4.0%). RAIs were also associated with a reduction in the time interval between the CT and MR examinations (29.0 days vs. 39.0 days). The most effective recommendations included wording that advocated for further evaluation and were mentioned in both the context and conclusion of the report. CONCLUSION: RAIs have a significant influence on clinical decisions. Radiologists should be aware of the power of RAIs and be prudent and conscientious when making recommendations in radiology reports.

As the climate seriously changes, ecofriendly nanomaterials have attracted tremendous interest in renewable energy as photocatalysis. Herein, we designed a new green bismuth-based Z-scheme Bi2O22+ slabs coordinate with 2-aminoterephthalic acid (N-BOB)/BiOIO3 through a simple anion exchange and postsynthetic hydrothermal reaction. FTIR, XRD, FESEM and TEM were employed to characterize the functional groups, structure, and morphologies. UV-DRS revealed the difference in band energy of the N-BOB and N-BOB/BiOIO3. Toward Rh B, TC and CIP degradation tests, 1-N-BOB/BiOIO3 manifests the best photocatalytic degradation (52.3%, 63.6% and 30.2%) efficiency. Also, 1-N-BOB/BiOIO3 possesses high durability in photocatalytic reactions and can inhibit 32.3% of bacterial growth. The results indicate that the synergistic effect between surface amine groups and Z-scheme heterojunction harvests light absorption to increase solar-to-energy (STE) efficiency, accelerate the charge separation, and increases the active sites with high photoredox potential, thus improving the photocatalytic performance. ROS scavenging tests further elucidated that photogenerated holes and hydroxyl radicals play a critical role. In addition, the surface amine groups and benzene rings can be utilized for supercapacitors and other multidisciplinary applications. 0.5 N-BOB/BiOIO3/GO impressively showed 5 times higher specific capacitance than pure GO electrode. We hope this work provides new sight into designing green nanomaterials to relieve environmental pollution and leave behind a clean future for the next generation.

3D SERS microneedles with self-assembled AuNPs were fabricated with tannic acid (chemical glue and reductant) on polylactic acid microneedles for in-depth chemical and biomolecular analysis, with LOD values below 200 ppb for small molecules and 102 CFU cm-2 for bacteria. The MB/Au-microneedles were used for photodynamic therapy with SERS-monitored photosensitizer degradation.

Collagen is an important and widely used biomaterial and therapeutic. The construction of large-scale collagen structures via the self-assembly of small collagen-related peptides has been extensively studied in the past decade. Here, we report a highly effective and simple means to assemble small synthetic collagen-related peptides into various higher-order structures by utilizing metal-histidine coordination. In this work, two short collagen-related peptides in which histidine residues were incorporated as metal binding sites were designed and chemically synthesized: HG(PPG)(9)GH (X9) and HG(PPG)(4)(PHG)(PPG)(4)GH (PHG). Circular dichroism measurements indicated that these two peptides form only marginally stable collagen triple helices but that their stability can be increased upon the addition of metal ions. Dynamic light scattering analyses, turbidity measurements, TEM, and SEM results demonstrated the metal ion-dependent self-assembly of X9 and PHG into supramolecular structures ranging from various nanofibrils to microscale spherical, laminated, and granulated assemblies. The topology and size of these higher-order structures depends both on the metal ion identity and the location of the binding sites. Most intriguingly, the assembled fibrils show similar D-periodicity to that of natural collagen. Our results demonstrate that metal-histidine coordination can serve as an effective force to induce the self-assembly of unstable collagen-related peptides into higher-order structures.

In this study, the Ni(OH)2/CuO heterostructured photocatalysts have been prepared via microwave (MW) hydrothermal method. The results indicate that the Ni(OH)2/CuO heterostructured composite exhibits a strong absorption in the UV and Vis regions. The construction of the heterojunction also improves the photogenerated carrier transport and inhibits the electron-hole separation due to the enhanced absorbance and the well alignment of the energy band at the Ni(OH)2/CuO interface. The photocatalytic capability of the heterostructured composites with different Ni(OH)2/CuO molar ratios is evaluated by the photodegradation of methylene blue under visible light illumination. The results reveal that the Ni(OH)2/CuO (1:1) heterostructures show the best photocatalytic efficiency, which is 2.18 and 6.13 times higher than that of pure Ni(OH)2 and CuO, respectively. Besides, the Ni(OH)2/CuO composites also reveal remarkable biocompatibility and strong photocatalytic activity in the degradation of antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin (CIP) and tetracycline (TC) and inactivation of Escherichia coli (E. coli).

Acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) is a serious bacterial disease caused by V. parahaemolyticus strains which contain a virulent plasmid that encodes a binary pore-forming Pir toxin. Typically, these AHPND-causing bacteria first colonize in the shrimp stomach and then later cross to the hepatopancreas. To do this, they must pass through structural barriers which include the pliant cuticular lining of the stomach lumen. A previous transcriptomic study of shrimp challenged with the virulent 5HP strain of V. parahaemolyticus found significant upregulation of a contig associated with the cuticular proteins LvDD9A and LvDD9B. Here, we confirmed that the mRNA levels of these two genes were significantly upregulated not only in 5HP-infected shrimp, but also in the stomach of shrimp challenged with the white spot syndrome virus (WSSV). Using dsRNA-mediated gene silencing, we found that AHPND-causing bacteria migrated to the hepatopancreas within 3 h of AHPND infection in LvDD9A/B-silenced shrimp. Shrimp shell hardness of LvDD9A/B-silenced shrimp was also significantly decreased. Conversely, we found that silencing of LvDD9A/B significantly inhibited both WSSV gene expression and genome replication. Taken together, our data suggests that LvDD9A and LvDD9B are involved in both AHPND and WSSV infection. However, in AHPND, these cuticular proteins help to prevent bacterial migration from the stomach to the hepatopancreas, whereas in WSSV infection, they facilitate viral gene expression and genome replication.

In this work, we demonstrated that building different linking groups between nanodiamond (ND) and TiO2 (P25) could provide more effective protection under oxidative stress and ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation compared with the use of TiO2 alone. The establishment of ester (-C-O-O-R), amide (-CONH-), and epoxide-amine adduct (-NHCCO-) groups between ND-TiO2 composites was found to be critical in the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by controlling their charge transfer behaviors. We hypothesized that linking groups between the composites dictate the performance of ROS generation from nano-TiO2 under UV-light irradiation due to the differences in linking groups. The results showed that hydroxyl radicals were attenuated by the incorporation of ND. An MTT cell proliferation assay was performed in human cells under the treatment of ND-TiO2 composites to investigate the impacts of composites on cell viability. The results from the luciferase reporter assay suggested they have anti-inflammatory activity and can reduce cellular DNA damage under ROS stimulation. A zebrafish model was also applied with the ND-TiO2 composite treatment to demonstrate the safety aspects of the composites in vivo and their biomedical application potential. Studies exploring ROS generation behaviors in different linking groups suggested that interactive functionalization between nanoparticles might be an ideal antioxidant and anti-inflammatory strategy.

PURPOSE: We investigated potential factors, including clinicopathological features, treatment modalities, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), carbohydrate antigen (CA) 19-9 level, tumor responses correlating with overall survival (OS), local progression (LP), and distant metastases (DMs), in patients with locally advanced pancreatic cancer (LAPC) who received definitive radiotherapy (RT). METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed demographic characteristics; biologically effective doses (BED10, calculated with an α/ß of 10) of RT; and clinical outcomes of 57 unresectable LAPC (all pancreatic adenocarcinoma) patients receiving definitive RT using modern techniques with and without systemic therapy between January 2009 and March 2019 at our institution. We used Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) version 1.1 to evaluate the radiographic tumor response after RT. The association between prognostic factors and OS was assessed using the Kaplan-Meier analysis and a Cox regression model, whereas baseline characteristics and treatment details were collected for competing-risk regression of the association with LP and DM using the Fine-Gray model. RESULTS: A median BED10 of 67.1 Gy resulted in a disease control rate of 87.7%, and the median OS was 11.8 months after a median follow-up of 32.1 months. The 1-year OS rate, cumulative incidences of LP, and DM were 49.2%, 38.5%, and 62.9%, respectively. Multivariate analyses showed that pre-RT NLR ≥3.5 (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] = 8.245, p < 0.001), CA19-9 reduction rate ≥50% (adjusted HR = 0.261, p = 0.005), RT without concurrent chemoradiotherapy (adjusted HR = 5.903, p = 0.004), and administration of chemotherapy after RT (adjusted HR = 0.207, p = 0.03) were independent prognostic factors for OS. Positive lymph nodal metastases (adjusted subdistribution HR [sHR] = 3.712, p = 0.003) and higher tumor reduction after RT (adjusted sHR = 0.922, p < 0.001) were significant prognostic factors for LP, whereas BED10 ≥ 67.1 Gy (adjusted sHR = 0.297, p = 0.002), CA19-9 reduction rate ≥50% (adjusted sHR = 0.334, p = 0.023), and RT alone (adjusted sHR = 2.633, p = 0.047) were significant prognostic factors for DM. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that pre-RT NLR and post-RT monitoring of CA19-9 and tumor size reduction can help identify whether patients belong to the good or poor prognostic group of LAPC. The incorporation of new systemic treatments during and after a higher BED10 RT dose for LAPC patients is warranted.

Acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND), a recently emerged bacterial shrimp disease, has increased shrimp mortality and caused huge economic losses in many Asian countries. However, molecular factors underlying pathogenesis of this disease remain largely unknown. Our objective was to characterize metabolic alterations in shrimp stomach during AHPND and determine effects of taurocholate on AHPND-causing Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Based on metabolomics, pathways for lipid metabolism and for primary bile acid (BA) synthesis were majorly affected following AHPND infection. Bile acid metabolites, namely taurocholate, were downregulated in the metabolomics database. This prompted us to study effects of taurocholate on biofilm formation, PirAB vp toxin release and biofilm detachment capabilities in AHPND-causing V. parahaemolyticus. Treatment of this bacterium with high concentration of taurocholate, a primary bile acid, induced biofilm formation, PirAB vp toxin release and facilitated the dispersion of bacterial cells. Taken together, our findings suggest that AHPND infection can affect the lipid metabolites in shrimp stomach, and further suggest that the primary bile acid taurocholate is important for the virulence of AHPND-causing V. parahaemolyticus.

Surface functionalization and shape modifications are the key strategies being utilized to overcome the limitations of semiconductors in advanced oxidation processes (AOP). Herein, the uniform α-Fe2O3 nanocrystals (α-Fe2O3-NCs) were effectively synthesized via a simple solvothermal route. Meanwhile, the sulfonic acid functionalization (SAF) and the impregnation of α-Fe2O3-NCs on g-C3N4 (α-Fe2O3-NCs@CN-SAF) were achieved through complete solvent evaporation technique. The surface functionalization of the sulfonic acid group on g-C3N4 accelerates the faster migration of electrons to the surface owing to robust electronegativity. The incorporation of α-Fe2O3-NCs with CN-SAF significantly enhances the optoelectronic properties, ultrafast spatial charge separation, and rapid charge transportation. The α-Fe2O3-HPs@CN-SAF and α-Fe2O3-NPs@CN-SAF nanocomposites attained 97.41% and 93.64% of Cr (VI) photoreduction in 10 min, respectively. The photocatalytic efficiency of α-Fe2O3-NCs@CN-SAF nanocomposite is 2.4 and 2.1 times higher than that of pure g-C3N4 and α-Fe2O3, respectively. Besides, the XPS, PEC and recycling experiments confirm the excellent photo-induced charge separation via Z-scheme heterostructure and cyclic stability of α-Fe2O3-NCs@CN-SAF nanocomposites.

As a two-dimensional nanomaterial, bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr) have attracted tremendous interest in the area of visible-light photocatalysis since it can provide the internal electric field (IEF) through z-axis through its unique electronic band structure. However, the insufficient active sites and rapid recombination rate of charged carriers hamper the efficiency of the photocatalysis. To address these two major obstacles, an enticing strategy of constructing heterojunction was established by introducing Bi2O2(OH)(NO3) (BiON) in BiOBr with the same precursor. Through a facile one-pot hydrothermal synthesis, two Sillén-type layered photocatalysts, with intimately constructed ultrathin heterostructure, was synthesized by the co-precipitation method. In this work, the formation of Bismuth-based heterojunction for charge separation is established by the excessive bismuth nitrate, which subsequently participates with the in situ growth of ultrathin hierarchical microspheres. By attenuating the thickness of BiOBr from 20 nm to 8 nm with the aid of BiON, the photogenerated charges could migrate to the active sites through shorter charge diffusion pathway. Also, the BiOBr and BiON act as an active bridge to promote the separation of electron-hole pairs, which also brings out more active sites due to its increased specific surface area. BiON/BiOBr ultrathin hierarchical microspheres exhibited enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity for decontaminating several types of pollutants. Besides, the activity of as-prepared BiON/BiOBr was further evaluated by inhibiting the growth of kanamycin-resistant bacteria strains. This study presents a novel strategy to incorporate the crystalline bismuth hydrate nitrate into BiOBr to form ultrathin hierarchical microspheres with high surface area for environmental remediation.

One of the eligible criteria for patients to receive boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is based on the tumour-to-normal ratio (T/N) measured by FBPA-PET. However, there is no standard protocol for normal region-of-interested delineation. With comparison of contralateral cerebrum, our study revealed the consistency (p < 0.05) and high feasibility using the cerebellum as an alternative normal tissue baseline because of its homogeneous uptake. Following RECIST version 1.1, the standard-operating-procedure (SOP) for the BNCT fulfilled the expected tumour response and tumour shrinkage rate (p < 0.05). Our modified procedure can provide more precise information for BNCT within a reasonable time.

Titanium dioxide nanomaterials have good capability to prevent human cells from damage under UV irradiation. However, some studies indicated that the nanoscale of titanium dioxide could potentially cause harmful effects such as free radical generation under UV irradiation and thereby accelerate the progress of cell aging. Fullerenes can scavenge large amounts of free radicals due to the fact that fullerenes contain enormous amount of π electrons with low lying lowest unoccupied molecular orbital, but its adverse properties, such as the poor solubility in water, restricted the applicability. In this study, we employed water-soluble carboxylic acid fullerenes (C60-COOH and C70-COOH) as the free radical scavenger and modify onto the surface of titanium dioxide by refluxed esterification (P25/C60-COOH or C70-COOH) technique. The conformation and properties of these nanomaterials were characterized by techniques and equipment such as X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectroscopy analysis, scanning electron microscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. We also introduced methylene blue and rhodamine B as indicators to evaluate and demonstrate the scavenging capacity of these nanomaterials. Moreover, we examined the biocompatibility and UV protection capacity of our P25/fullerene composites in human 293T cells, and applied luciferase activity assay to investigate the possible underlying cell protection mechanisms exhibited by these nanomaterials. Our data indicate that both P25/C60-COOH and P25/C70-COOH could protect human cells against UV exposure. P25/C70-COOH exhibits great anti-inflammation capacity, whereas P25/C60-COOH exhibits great anti-oxidative stress and anti-DNA damage capacity. Our results suggest that most of our P25/fullerene composite materials have the ability to reduce free radicals and exhibit high biomedical potential in anti-inflammation, anti-oxidant, and anti-aging applications.

Conventional inorganic mass spectrometric (MS) analysis of metals can require time-consuming and tedious sample preparation. We thus report the novel and direct characterization of metals in solid samples using an organic MS technique known as electrospray laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (ELDI/MS). No sample pretreatment was needed, and results were rapidly obtained due to the ambient and laser-based nature of ELDI/MS. Metals from samples were desorbed and ionized by laser irradiation, after which they reacted with EDTA and then post-ionized and detected as metal-EDTA complexes. Aluminum, copper, iron, lead, nickel, and zinc from plates, foils, and coins were characterized in seconds. This study demonstrates that an ESI/MS system can be easily modified to analyze metal elements in solids by involving a chelating agent, indicating a potentially promising development in MS towards the analysis of metals using organic MS.
