BACKGROUND: Hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs) are a significant problem for hospitals worldwide, negatively affecting patients and organizations by decreasing quality of life and increasing organizational cost of care and workload. A common pressure injury prevention intervention is frequent turning, though compliance can be low. As a newer technology, wearable sensors have emerged as an intervention to increase turn compliance. AIMS: The aim of this integrative review was to determine the clinical outcomes of using wearable sensors as a HAPI prevention intervention. METHODS: This integrative review was appraised by two independent reviewers using the Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice Research Appraisal Tool. RESULTS: Eleven articles were included. The use of wearable sensors increases compliance with frequent turn protocols while decreasing HAPIs and reducing organizational costs. Despite this, the use of such technology was not found to increase the quality of turns. Although staff who used this technology reported positive feedback, technological training is needed to ensure proper use of the sensors. LINKING ACTION TO PRACTICE: This innovation has the potential to transform how nursing staff prevent pressure injuries, but more research is needed to definitively state whether wearable sensors will be efficacious as a pressure injury prevention intervention.

BACKGROUND: Aquatic species in several clades possess cement glands producing adhesive secretions of various strengths. In vertebrates, transient adhesive organs have been extensively studied in Xenopus laevis, other anurans, and in several fish species. However, the development of these structures is not fully understood. RESULTS: Here, we report on the development and functional morphology of the adhesive gland of a giant danio species, Devario malabaricus. We found that the gland is localized on the larval head, is composed of goblet-like secretory cells framed by basal, bordering, and intercalated apical epithelial cells, and is innervated by the trigeminal ganglion. The gland allows nonswimming larvae to adhere to various substrates. Its secretory cells differentiate by 12 hours postfertilization and begin to disappear in the second week of life. Exogenous retinoic acid disrupts the gland's patterning. More importantly, the single mature gland emerges from fusion of two differentiated secretory cells fields; this fusion is dependent on nonmuscle myosin II function. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, our studies provide the first documentation of the embryonic development, structure, and function of the adhesive apparatus of a danioninae. To our knowledge, this is also the first report of a cement gland arising from convergence of two bilateral fields.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in unprecedented health care challenges and transformation of nursing practice. A significant challenge faced by health care systems was the rapid identification and training of nurses in various specialties, including critical care, to care for a large influx of critically ill patients. OBJECTIVE: To identify common themes and modalities that support best practices for the rapid training of registered nurses in team-based critical care nursing. METHODS: With the Whittemore and Knafl integrative review methodology as a framework, a literature review was conducted using a priori search terms. RESULTS: The integrative review included 11 articles and revealed 3 common themes: communication challenges, team dynamics, and the methodological approach to implementing training. DISCUSSION: This integrative review highlighted 3 main implications for future practice and policy in the event of another pandemic. Clear and frequent communication, multidisciplinary huddles, and open communication are paramount for mitigating role confusion and enhancing team dynamics. A multimodal approach to training appears to be feasible and effective for rapidly training support registered nurses to care for critically ill patients. However, the optimal training duration remains unidentified. CONCLUSIONS: Rapidly training registered nurses to care for critically ill patients in a team-based dynamic is a safe and effective course of action to mitigate staff shortages if another pandemic occurs.

Giant danios (genus Devario), like zebrafish, are teleosts belonging to the danioninae subfamily of cyprinids. Adult giant danios are used in a variety of investigations aimed at understanding cellular and physiological processes, including heart regeneration. Despite their importance, little is known about development and growth in giant danios, or their cardiac and coronary vessels development. To address this scarcity of knowledge, we performed a systematic study of a giant danio (Devario malabaricus), focusing on its cardiac development, from the segmentation period to ten months post-fertilization. Using light and scanning electron microscopy, we documented that its cardiovascular development and maturation proceed along well defined dynamic and conserved morphogenic patterns. The overall size and cardiovascular expansion of this species was significantly impacted by environmental parameters such as rearing densities. The coronary vasculature began to emerge in the late larval stage. More importantly, we documented two possible loci of initiation of the coronary vasculature in this species, and compared the emergence of the coronaries to that of zebrafish and gourami. This is the first comprehensive study of the cardiac growth in a Devario species, and our findings serve as an important reference for further investigations of cardiac biology using this species.
