RESUMO

Implantable neural probes have been extensively utilized in the fields of neurocircuitry, systems neuroscience, and brain-computer interface. However, the long-term functionality of these devices is hampered by the formation of glial scar and astrogliosis at the surface of electrodes. In this study, we administered KDS2010, a recently developed reversible MAO-B inhibitor, to mice through ad libitum drinking in order to prevent glial scar formation and astrogliosis. The administration of KDS2010 allowed long-term recordings of neural signals with implantable devices, which remained stable over a period of 6 months and even restored diminished neural signals after probe implantation. KDS2010 effectively prevented the formation of glial scar, which consists of reactive astrocytes and activated microglia around the implant. Furthermore, it restored neural activity by disinhibiting astrocytic MAO-B dependent tonic GABA inhibition induced by astrogliosis. We suggest that the use of KDS2010 is a promising approach to prevent glial scar formation around the implant, thereby enabling long-term functionality of neural devices.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The effect of sevoflurane on left ventricular diastolic function is not well understood. We hypothesized that parameters of diastolic function may improve under sevoflurane anesthesia in patients with preexisting diastolic dysfunction compared to patients with normal diastolic function. METHODS: This observational study included 60 patients undergoing breast surgery or laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Patients were assigned to diastolic dysfunction (n = 34) or normal (n = 26) groups of septal e' < 8 or ≥ 8.0 cm/s on the first thoracic echocardiography (TTE) performed before anesthesia. During anesthesia, sevoflurane was maintained at 1 to 2 minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) to maintain the bispectral index at 40 to 50. At the end of surgery, the second TTE was performed under 0.8 to 1 MAC of sevoflurane with the patient breathing spontaneously without ventilator support. Primary end point was the percentage change (Δ) of e' on 2 TTEs (Δe'). Secondary end points were ΔE/e', Δleft atrial volume index (ΔLAVI), and Δtricuspid regurgitation maximum velocity (ΔTR Vmax). These percentage changes (Δ) were compared between diastolic dysfunction and normal groups. RESULTS: e' (Δe': 30 [6, 64] vs 0 [-18, 11]%; P < .001), mitral inflow E wave velocity (E), mitral inflow E/A ratio (E/A), and mitral E velocity deceleration time (DT) improved significantly in diastolic dysfunction group compared to normal group. LAVI decreased in diastolic dysfunction group but did not reach statistical significance between the 2 groups (ΔLAVI:-15 [-31, -3] vs -4 [-20, 10]%, P = .091). ΔE/e' was not different between the 2 groups (11 [-16, 26] vs 12 [-9, 22]%, P = .853) (all: median [interquartile range, IQR]). TR was minimal in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, echocardiographic parameters of diastolic function, including septal e', E, E/A, and DT, improved with sevoflurane anesthesia in patients with preexisting diastolic dysfunction, but remained unchanged in patients with normal diastolic function.

RESUMO

Vertical two-terminal synaptic devices based on resistive switching have shown great potential for emulating biological signal processing and implementing artificial intelligence learning circuitries. To mimic heterosynaptic behaviors in vertical two-terminal synaptic devices, an additional terminal is required for neuromodulator activity. However, adding an extra terminal, such as a gate of the field-effect transistor, may lead to low scalability. In this study, a vertical two-terminal Pt/bilayer Sr1.8Ag0.2Nb3O10 (SANO) nanosheet/Nb:SrTiO3 (Nb:STO) device emulates heterosynaptic plasticity by controlling the number of trap sites in the SANO nanosheet via modulation of the tunneling current. Similar to biological neuromodulation, we modulated the synaptic plasticity, pulsed pair facilitation, and cutoff frequency of a simple two-terminal device. Therefore, our synaptic device can add high-level learning such as associative learning to a neuromorphic system with a simple cross-bar array structure.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Though the finger is generally recommended for pulse oxygen saturation (SpO2) monitoring site, its reliability may be compromised in conditions of poor peripheral perfusion. Therefore, we compared the performance of nasal septum SpO2 monitoring with finger SpO2 monitoring relative to simultaneous arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) monitoring in generally anesthetized patients. METHODS: In 23 adult patients, comparisons of SpO2 measured at the nasal septum and finger with simultaneous SaO2 were made at four time points during the 90 min study period. A pulse oximetry monitoring failure was defined as a > 10 s continuous failure of in an adequate SpO2 data acquisition. Core temperature as well as finger-tip and nasal septum temperatures were simultaneously measured at 10 min intervals. RESULTS: A total of 92 sets of SpO2 and SaO2 measurements were obtained in 23 patients. The bias and precision for SpO2 measured at the nasal septum were - 0.8 ± 1.3 (95% confidence interval: - 1.1 to - 0.6), which was similar to those for SpO2 measured at the finger (- 0.6 ± 1.4; 95% confidence interval: - 0.9 to - 0.4) (p = 0.154). Finger-tip temperatures were consistently lower than other two temperatures at all time points (p < 0.05), reaching 33.5 ± 2.3 °C at 90 min after induction of anesthesia. While pulse oximetry monitoring failure did not occur for nasal septum probe, two cases of failure occurred for finger probe. CONCLUSIONS: Considering the higher stability to hypothermia with a similar accuracy, nasal septum pulse oximetry may be an attractive alternative to finger pulse oximetry. RESUMO

PURPOSE: Adequate oxygenation and airway management during deep sedation can be challenging. We investigated the effect of high-flow nasal cannula (group HF) and conventional nasal cannula (group CO) during sedation for endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). METHODS: Patients undergoing ESD with deep sedation were enrolled. The primary outcome was difference in lowest oxygen saturation (SpO2) between the groups. Incidence of hypoxia (SpO2 < 90%), patients with SpO2 < 95%, hypercapnia, and airway interventions; operator satisfaction; and adverse events were recorded. RESULTS: Thirty-two patients in each group completed the study. The mean of minimum SpO2 values was significantly higher in group HF than in group CO (96.8% ± 4.2% vs. 93.3% ± 5.3%, p = 0.005). The incidence of hypoxia was comparable between the groups (4 [12.5%] vs. 6 [18.8%], p = 0.491); however, patients with SpO2 < 95% were significantly less in group HF (5 [15.6%] vs. 18 [56.3%], p = 0.003). Incidence of hypercapnia was higher in group HF than in group CO (14 [46.7%] vs. 5 [16.7%], p = 0.013). Airway rescue interventions were significantly less common in group HF. Satisfaction of operators and post-procedural complications were comparable between the two groups. In multivariable analysis, group CO and higher body mass index were risk factors for airway managements (odds ratio [95% confidence interval]: 6.204 [1.784-21.575], p = 0.004; 1.337 [1.043-1.715], p = 0.022, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Compared to conventional nasal cannula, high-flow nasal cannula maintained higher minimum SpO2 value during deep sedation with propofol-remifentanil for ESD. RESUMO

Polymer-based nanocomposites are desirable materials for next-generation dielectric capacitors. 2D dielectric nanosheets have received significant attention as a filler. However, randomly spreading the 2D filler causes residual stresses and agglomerated defect sites in the polymer matrix, which leads to the growth of an electric tree, resulting in a more premature breakdown than expected. Therefore, realizing a well-aligned 2D nanosheet layer with a small amount is a key challenge; it can inhibit the growth of conduction paths without degrading the performance of the material. Here, an ultrathin Sr1.8 Bi0.2 Nb3 O10 (SBNO) nanosheet filler is added as a layer into poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) films via the Langmuir-Blodgett method. The structural properties, breakdown strength, and energy storage capacity of a PVDF and multilayer PVDF/SBNO/PVDF composites as a function of the thickness-controlled SBNO layer are examined. The seven-layered (only 14 nm) SBNO nanosheets thin film can sufficiently prevent the electrical path in the PVDF/SBNO/PVDF composite and shows a high energy density of 12.8 J cm-3 at 508 MV m-1 , which is significantly higher than that of the bare PVDF film (9.2 J cm-3 at 439 MV m-1 ). At present, this composite has the highest energy density among the polymer-based nanocomposites under the filler of thin thickness.

RESUMO

This paper describes a practical method for obtaining the spectra of lights emitted by a fluor in a liquid scintillator (LS) using a digital camera. The emission wavelength results obtained using a digital image were compared with those obtained using a fluorescence spectrophotometer. For general users, conventional spectrophotometers are expensive and difficult to access. Moreover, their experimental measurement setup and processes are highly complicated, and they require considerable care in handling. To overcome these limitations, a feasibility study was performed to obtain the emission spectrum through image analysis. Specifically, the emission spectrum of a fluor dissolved in a liquid scintillator was obtained using digital image analysis. An image processing method was employed to convert the light irradiated during camera exposure into wavelengths. Hue (H) and wavelength (W) are closely related. Thus, we obtained an H-W response curve in the 400~450 nm wavelength region, using a light-emitting diode. Another relevant advantage of the method described in this study is its non-invasiveness in sealed LS samples. Our results showed that this method has the potential to accurately investigate the emission wavelengths of fluor within acceptable uncertainties. We envision the use of this method to perform experiments in chemistry and physics laboratories in the future.

RESUMO

Obesity-induced inflammation and insulin resistance are mediated by macrophage infiltration into adipose tissue. We investigated the effects of 7,8-dihydroxyflavone (7,8-DHF), a flavone found in plants, on the inflammatory response and insulin resistance induced by the interaction between adipocytes and macrophages. Hypertrophied 3T3-L1 adipocytes were cocultured with RAW 264.7 macrophages and treated with 7,8-DHF (3.12, 12.5, and 50 µM). The inflammatory cytokines and free fatty acid (FFA) release were evaluated by assay kits, and signaling pathways were determined by immunoblotting. Coculture of adipocytes and macrophages increased inflammatory mediators, such as nitric oxide (NO), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) and FFA secretion but suppressed the production of anti-inflammatory adiponectin. 7,8-DHF counteracted the coculture-induced changes (p < 0.001). 7,8-DHF also inhibited c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) activation and blocked nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) nuclear translocation in the coculture system (p < 0.01). In addition, adipocytes cocultured with macrophages did not increase glucose uptake and Akt phosphorylation in response to insulin. However, 7,8-DHF treatment recovered the impaired responsiveness to insulin (p < 0.01). These findings show that 7,8-DHF alleviates inflammation and adipocyte dysfunction in the coculture of hypertrophied 3T3-L1 adipocytes and RAW 264.7 macrophages, indicating its potential as a therapeutic agent for obesity-induced insulin resistance.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In 2017, we established an airway call (AC) team composed of anesthesiologists to improve emergency airway management outside the operating room. In this retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data from the airway registry, we describe the characteristics of patients attended to and practices by the AC team during the first 4 years of implementation. METHODS: All AC team activations in which an airway intervention was performed by the AC team between June 2017 and May 2021 were analyzed. RESULTS: In all, 359 events were analyzed. Activation was more common outside of working hours (62.1%) and from the intensive care unit (85.0%); 36.2% of AC activations were due to known or anticipated difficult airway, most commonly because of acquired airway anomalies (n = 49), followed by airway edema or bleeding (n = 32) and very young age (≤ 1 years; n = 30). In 71.3% of the cases, successful intubation was performed by the AC team at the first attempt. However, three or more attempts were performed in 33 cases. The most common device used for successful intubation was the videolaryngoscope (59.7%). Tracheal intubation by the AC team failed in nine patients, who then required surgical airway insertion by otolaryngologists. However, there were no airway-related deaths. CONCLUSIONS: When coupled with appropriate assistance from an otolaryngologist AC system, an AC team composed of anesthesiologists could be an efficient way to provide safe airway management outside the operating room. RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to develop a novel bleaching material containing hydrated calcium silicate (hCS) particles and investigate the effects of hCS on the bleaching efficacy, microhardness, and surface morphology of bovine enamel. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To prepare the hCS particles, white Portland cement was mixed with distilled water and ground into a fine powder. The particles in various proportions were then mixed with 35% hydrogen peroxide solution (HP), while HP without hCS was used as a control (HP), and teeth whitening gel was used as a commercial control (CC). Following the thrice application of experimental and control solutions on the discolored bovine enamel surface for 15 min, color change (n = 10), microhardness (n = 10), and micromorphology (n = 2) of the enamel surface were analyzed. RESULTS: The Δ E* of the enamel surface treated with the experimental solution containing hCS was significantly higher than that of the CC, but there were no significant differences between the different hCS contents. The experimental solution containing hCS reduced the percentage of microhardness loss on the enamel surface, and the percentage of microhardness loss significantly decreased as the content of hCS increased (p < 0.05). The erosion pattern was only observed on enamel surfaces treated with HP and CC. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that HP containing hCS is effective in bleaching efficacy. In addition, hCS could also minimize the microhardness loss of tooth structure caused by HP and maintain enamel surface morphology. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This novel bleaching material is promising for inhibiting demineralization and promoting the remineralization of teeth during bleaching treatment in dental clinics.

RESUMO

Motion capture systems are crucial in developing multi-quadrotor systems due to their ability to provide fast and accurate ground truth measurements for tracking and control. This paper presents the implementation details and experimental validation of a relatively low-cost motion-capture system for multi-quadrotor motion planning using an event camera. The real-time, multi-quadrotor detection and tracking tasks are performed using a deep learning network You-Only-Look-Once (YOLOv5) and a k-dimensional (k-d) tree, respectively. An optimization-based decentralized motion planning algorithm is implemented to demonstrate the effectiveness of this motion capture system. Extensive experimental evaluations were performed to (1) compare the performance of four deep-learning algorithms for high-speed multi-quadrotor detection on event-based data, (2) study precision, recall, and F1 scores as functions of lighting conditions and camera motion, and (3) investigate the scalability of this system as a function of the number of quadrotors flying in the arena. Comparative analysis of the deep learning algorithms on a consumer-grade GPU demonstrates a 4.8× to 12× sampling/inference rate advantage that YOLOv5 provides over representative one- and two-stage detectors and a 1.14× advantage over YOLOv4. In terms of precision and recall, YOLOv5 performed 15% to 18% and 27% to 41% better than representative state-of-the-art deep learning networks. Graceful detection and tracking performance degradation was observed in the face of progressively darker ambient light conditions. Despite severe camera motion, YOLOv5 precision and recall values of 94% and 98% were achieved, respectively. Finally, experiments involving up to six indoor quadrotors demonstrated the scalability of this approach. This paper also presents the first open-source event camera dataset in the literature, featuring over 10,000 fully annotated images of multiple quadrotors operating in indoor and outdoor environments.

RESUMO

We synthesized an alcohol-based liquid scintillator (AbLS), and we implemented an auxiliary monitoring system with short calibration intervals using AbLS for particle therapy. The commercial liquid scintillator used in previous studies did not allow the user to control the chemical ratio and its composition. In our study, the chemical ratio of AbLS was freely controlled by simultaneously mixing water and alcohol. To make an equivalent substance to the human body, 2-ethoxyethanol was used. There was no significant difference between AbLS and water in areal density. As an application of AbLS, the range was measured with AbLS using an electron beam in an image analysis that combined AbLS and a digital phone camera. Given a range-energy relationship for the electron expressed as areal density, the electron beam range (cm) in water can be easily estimated. To date, no literature report for the direct comparison of a pixel image analysis and Monte Carlo (MC) simulation has been published. Furthermore, optical tomography of the inverse problem was performed with AbLS and a mobile phone camera. Analyses of optical tomography images provide deeper insight into Radon transformation. In addition, the human phantom, which is difficult to compose with semiconductor diodes, was easily implemented as an image acquisition and analysis system.

RESUMO

We introduced a digital photo image analysis in color space to estimate the spectrum of fluor components dissolved in a liquid scintillator sample through the hue and wavelength relationship. Complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) image sensors with Bayer color filter array (CFA) technology in the digital camera were used to reconstruct and decode color images. Hue and wavelength are closely related. To date, no literature has reported the hue and wavelength relationship measurements, especially for blue or close to the UV region. The non-linear hue and wavelength relationship in the blue region was investigated using a light emitting diode source. We focused on this wavelength region, because the maximum quantum efficiency of the bi-alkali photomultiplier tube (PMT) is around 430 nm. It is necessary to have a good understanding of this wavelength region in PMT-based experiments. The CMOS Bayer CFA approach was sufficient to estimate the fluor emission spectrum in the liquid scintillator sample without using an expensive spectrophotometer.

RESUMO

In this study, a non-linear hue-wavelength (H-W) curve was investigated from 400 to 650 nm. To date, no study has reported on H-W relationship measurements, especially down to the 400 nm region. A digital camera mounted with complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) image sensors was used. The obtained digital images of the sample were based on an RGB-based imaging analysis rather than multispectral imaging or hyperspectral imaging. In this study, we focused on the raw image to reconstruct the H-W curve. In addition, several factors affecting the digital image, such as exposure time or international organization for standardization (ISO), were investigated. In addition, cross check of the H-W response using laser was performed. We expect that our method will be useful as an auxiliary method in the future for obtaining the fluor emission wavelength information.

RESUMO

Sphingosine-1-phosphate-1 (S1P1) receptor agonists are well-known drugs for treating multiple sclerosis (MS) caused by autoreactive lymphocytes that attack the myelin sheath. Therefore, an effective therapeutic strategy is to reduce the lymphocytes in the blood by inducing S1P1 receptor internalization. We synthesized serinolamide A, a natural product of the sea, and performed S1P1 receptor internalization assay to evaluate functionally antagonistic S1P1 receptor agonist activity. In order to synthesize derivatives with better efficacy than serinolamide A and B, new derivatives were synthesized by introducing the phenyl ring moiety of fingolimod. Among them, compounds 19 and 21 had superior S1P1 agonistic effects to serinolamide. We also confirmed that compound 19 effectively inhibited lymphocyte outflow in peripheral lymphocyte count (PLC) assay.

RESUMO

The CRISPR/Cas9 system has been used for genome editing in several plant species; however, there are few reports on its use in trees. Here, CRISPR/Cas9 was used to mutate a target gene in Populus alba × Populus glandulosa hybrid poplars. The hybrid poplar is routinely used in molecular biological studies due to the well-established Agrobacterium-mediated transformation method. A single guide RNA (sgRNA) with reported high mutation efficiency in other popular species was designed with a protospacer adjacent motif sequence for the phytoene desaturase 1 (PagPDS1) gene. The pHSE/Cas9-PagPDS1 sgRNA vector was delivered into hybrid poplar cells using Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. The transgenic plants were propagated and classified them into three groups according to their phenotypes. Among a total of 110 lines of transgenic hybrid poplars, 82 lines showed either an albino or a pale green phenotype, indicating around 74.5% phenotypic mutation efficiency of the PagPDS1 gene. The albino phenotypes were observed when the CRISPR/Cas9-mediated mutations in both PagPDS1 alleles in the transgenic plants. There was no off-target modification of the PagPDS2 gene, which has a potential sgRNA target sequence with two mismatches. The results confirmed that the sgRNA can specifically edit PagPDS1 rather than PagPDS2, indicating that CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing can effectively induce target mutations in the hybrid poplar. This technique will be useful to improve tree quality in hybrid poplars (P. alba × P. glandulosa); for example, by enhancing biomass or stress tolerance.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Pleural adhesion makes video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) an arduous procedure and can increase postoperative pain from accompanying adhesiolysis. For the present study, the feasibility of lung ultrasonography for the prediction of pleural adhesions and postoperative pain in VATS was investigated. DESIGN: Blinded, prospective, observational study. SETTING: Tertiary teaching hospital, Seoul, South Korea. PARTICIPANTS: Sixty patients (American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status I to III) scheduled to undergo VATS were assessed for eligibility. After exclusions, 53 patients were enrolled and followed-up. INTERVENTIONS: None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Patients were evaluated with lung ultrasonography during deep spontaneous respiration before induction of anesthesia, and surgeons confirmed the presence of pleural adhesions during the surgery. Pain was evaluated using a numeric rating scale and by the amount of opioid consumption until 24 hours postoperatively. Lung ultrasonography showed acceptable predictability of pleural adhesions, with the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (0.75, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.67-0.83) and high specificity (0.97, 95% CI 0.91-0.99) but low sensitivity (0.53, 95% CI 0.38-0.68). The pain score was not different between sonographic adhesion (+) and (-) groups; however, the sonographic adhesion (+) group consumed more opioids until 24 hours postoperatively (fentanyl 675 [558-805] µg v 420 [356-476] µg; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Lung ultrasonography may help with planning postoperative pain management in VATS; however, it was a better tool for ruling out rather than detecting pleural adhesions.

RESUMO

In this paper, we performed a feasibility study of using a water-based liquid scintillator (WbLS) for conducting imaging analysis with a digital camera. The liquid scintillator (LS) dissolves a scintillating fluor in an organic base solvent to emit light. We synthesized a liquid scintillator using water as a solvent. In a WbLS, a suitable surfactant is needed to mix water and oil together. As an application of the WbLS, we introduced a digital photo image analysis in color space. A demosaicing process to reconstruct and decode color is briefly described. We were able to estimate the emission spectrum of the fluor dissolved in the WbLS by analyzing the pixel information stored in the digital image. This technique provides the potential to estimate fluor components in the visible region without using an expensive spectrophotometer. In addition, sinogram analysis was performed with Radon transformation to reconstruct transverse images with longitudinal photo images of the WbLS sample.

RESUMO

Calculation of peripheral capillary oxygen saturation [Formula: see text] levels in humans is often made with a pulse oximeter, using photoplethysmography (PPG) waveforms. However, measurements of PPG waveforms are susceptible to motion noise due to subject and sensor movements. In this study, we compare two [Formula: see text]-level calculation techniques, and measure the effect of pre-filtering by a heart-rate tuned comb peak filter on their performance. These techniques are: (1) "Red over Infrared," calculating the ratios of AC and DC components of the red and infrared PPG signals,[Formula: see text], followed by the use of a calibration curve to determine the [Formula: see text] level Webster (in: Design of pulse oximeters, CRC Press, Boca Raton, 1997); and (2) a motion-resistant algorithm which uses the Discrete Saturation Transform (DST) (Goldman in J Clin Monit Comput 16:475-83, 2000). The DST algorithm isolates individual "saturation components" in the optical pathway, which allows separation of components corresponding to the [Formula: see text] level from components corresponding to noise and interference, including motion artifacts. The comparison we provide here (employing the two techniques with and without pre-filtering) addresses two aspects: (1) accuracy of the [Formula: see text] calculations; and (2) computational complexity. We used both synthetic data and experimental data collected from human subjects. The human subjects were tested at rest and while exercising; while exercising, their measurements were subject to the impacts of motion. Our main conclusion is that if an uninterrupted high-quality heart rate measurement is available, then the "Red over Infrared" approach preceded by a heart-rate tuned comb filter provides the preferred trade-off between [Formula: see text]-level accuracy and computational complexity. A modest improvement in [Formula: see text] estimate accuracy at very low SNR environments may be achieved by switching to the pre-filtered DST-based algorithm (up to 6% improvement in [Formula: see text] level accuracy at -10 dB over unfiltered DST algorithm and the filtered "Red over Infrared" approach). However, this improvement comes at a significant computational cost.

RESUMO

Acute pancreatitis (AP) is an inflammatory disorder, involving acinar cell death and the release of inflammatory cytokines. Currently, there are limited effective therapeutic agents for AP. Betulinic acid (BA) is a pentacyclic triterpenoid extracted from Betula platyphylla that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of BA on AP and elucidate the potential underlying mechanisms. AP was induced in mice through six intraperitoneal injections of cerulein. After the last cerulein injection, the mice were sacrificed. Our results revealed that pre- and post-treatment with BA significantly reduced the severity of pancreatitis, as evidenced by a decrease in histological damage in the pancreas and lung, serum amylase and lipase activity and pancreatic myeloperoxidase activity. Furthermore, BA pretreatment reduced proinflammatory cytokine production, augmentation of chemokines, and infiltration of macrophages and neutrophils in the pancreas of AP mice. In addition, mice that were pretreated with BA showed a reduction in Iκ-Bα degradation and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) binding activity in the pancreas. Moreover, BA reduced the production of proinflammatory cytokines and NF-κB activation in pancreatic acinar cells (PACs). These findings suggest that BA may have prophylactic and therapeutic effects on AP via inhibition of the NF-κB signaling pathway.
