RESUMO

Van der Waals heterostructures with two-dimensional magnets offer a magnetic junction with an atomically sharp and clean interface. This attribute ensures that the magnetic layers maintain their intrinsic spin-polarized electronic states and spin-flipping scattering processes at a minimum level, a trait that can expand spintronic device functionalities. Here, using a van der Waals assembly of ferromagnetic Fe3GeTe2 with non-magnetic hexagonal boron nitride and WSe2 layers, we demonstrate electrically tunable, highly transparent spin injection and detection across the van der Waals interfaces. By varying an electrical bias, the net spin polarization of the injected carriers can be modulated and reversed in polarity, which leads to sign changes of the tunnelling magnetoresistance. We attribute the spin polarization reversals to sizable contributions from high-energy localized spin states in the metallic ferromagnet, so far inaccessible in conventional magnetic junctions. Such tunability of the spin-valve operations opens a promising route for the electronic control of next-generation low-dimensional spintronic device applications.

Josephson tunnel junctions exhibit a supercurrent typically proportional to the sine of the superconducting phase difference ϕ. In general, a term proportional to cos(ϕ) is also present, alongside microscopic electronic retardation effects. We show that voltage pulses sharply varying in time prompt a significant impact of the cos(ϕ) term. Its interplay with the sin(ϕ) term results in a nonequilibrium fractional Josephson effect (NFJE) ∼sin(ϕ/2) in the presence of bound states close to zero frequency. Our microscopic analysis reveals that the interference of nonequilibrium virtual quasiparticle excitations is responsible for this phenomenon. We also analyze this phenomenon for topological Josephson junctions with Majorana bound states. Remarkably, the NFJE is independent of the ground state fermion parity unlike its equilibrium counterpart.

Deep theoretical understanding of the electrical response of Josephson junctions is indispensable regarding both recent discoveries of new kinds of superconductivity and technological advances such as superconducting quantum computers. Here, we study the microscopic theory of the dc current-biased I-V characteristics of Josephson tunnel junctions. We derive an analytical formula of the I-V characteristics of generic junctions. We identify subharmonics of the I-V characteristics and their underlying mechanism as the feedback effect of intrinsic ac currents generated by voltage pulses in the past. We apply our theory to analytically solve the Werthamer equation and describe various dc current-biased I-V characteristics as a function of softening of the superconducting gap. Strikingly, we identify voltage staircases of the I-V characteristics in a genuine Josephson junction without ac current bias or qubit dynamics. Our general analytical formalism opens new avenues for a microscopic understanding of I-V characteristics of Josephson junctions that have been limited to phenomenological models so far.

Electron-phonon scatterings in solid-state systems are pivotal processes in determining many key physical quantities such as charge carrier mobilities and thermal conductivities. Here, we report direct probing of phonon mode specific electron-phonon scatterings in layered semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides WSe2, MoSe2, WS2, and MoS2 through inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy measurements, quantum transport simulations, and density functional calculation. We experimentally and theoretically characterize momentum-conserving single- and two-phonon electron-phonon scatterings involving up to as many as eight individual phonon modes in mono- and bilayer films, among which transverse, longitudinal acoustic and optical, and flexural optical phonons play significant roles in quantum charge flows. Moreover, the layer-number sensitive higher-order inelastic electron-phonon scatterings, which are confirmed to be generic in all four semiconducting layers, can be attributed to differing electronic structures, symmetry, and quantum interference effects during the scattering processes in the ultrathin semiconducting films.

Assessing atomic defect states and their ramifications on the electronic properties of two-dimensional van der Waals semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (SC-TMDs) is the primary task to expedite multi-disciplinary efforts in the promotion of next-generation electrical and optical device applications utilizing these low-dimensional materials. Here, with electron tunneling and optical spectroscopy measurements with density functional theory, we spectroscopically locate the mid-gap states from chalcogen-atom vacancies in four representative monolayer SC-TMDs-WS2, MoS2, WSe2, and MoSe2-, and carefully analyze the similarities and dissimilarities of the atomic defects in four distinctive materials regarding the physical origins of the missing chalcogen atoms and the implications to SC-mTMD properties. In addition, we address both quasiparticle and optical energy gaps of the SC-mTMD films and find out many-body interactions significantly enlarge the quasiparticle energy gaps and excitonic binding energies, when the semiconducting monolayers are encapsulated by non-interacting hexagonal boron nitride layers.

A sensitive and specific method using a one-step liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) with ethyl acetate followed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with positive ion electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS) detection was developed and validated for the determination of roxatidine in human plasma using famotidine as an internal standard (IS). Data acquisition was carried out in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode, by monitoring the transitions m/z 307.3-->107.1 for roxatidine and m/z 338.4-->189.1 for famotidine. Chromatographic separation was performed on a reverse phase Hydrosphere C(18) column at 0.2 mL min(-1) using a mixture of methanol-ammonium formate buffer as mobile phase (20:80, v/v; adjusted to pH 3.9 with formic acid). The achieved lower limit of quantification (LLOQ) was 1.0 ng mL(-1) and the standard calibration curve for roxatidine was linear (r(2)=0.998) over the studied range (1-1000 ng mL(-1)) with acceptable accuracy and precision. Roxatidine was found to be stable in human plasma samples under short-, long-term storage and processing conditions. The developed method was validated and successfully applied to the bioequivalence study of roxatidine administrated as a single oral dose (75 mg as roxatidine acetate hydrochloride) to healthy female Korean volunteers.

A simple and specific method using a one-step liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) with butyl acetate followed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with positive ion electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS) detection was developed for the determination of etodolac in human plasma, using indomethacin as an internal standard (IS). Chromatographic separation was performed isocratically using a Capcellpak MGII C(18) column with 65% acetonitrile and 35% water containing 10mM ammonium formate (adjusted to pH 3.5 with formic acid). Acquisition was performed in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode by monitoring the transitions: m/z 287.99>172.23 for etodolac and m/z 357.92>139.01 for IS. The method was validated to determine its selectivity, linearity, sensitivity, precision, accuracy, recovery and stability. The limit of quantitation (LLOQ) was 0.1microg/mL with a relative standard deviation of less than 15%. The devised method provides an accurate, precise and sensitive tool for determining etodolac levels in plasma.

Coupling of the electron orbital motion and spin, i.e., spin-orbit coupling (SOC) leads to nontrivial changes in energy-level structures, giving rise to various spectroscopies and applications. The SOC in solids generates energy-band inversion or splitting under zero or weak magnetic fields, which is required for topological phases or Majorana fermions. Here, we examined the interplay between the Zeeman splitting and SOC by performing the transport spectroscopy of Landau levels (LLs) in indium arsenide nanowires under a strong magnetic field. We observed the anomalous Zeeman splitting of LLs, which depends on the quantum number of LLs as well as the electron spin. We considered that this observation was attributed to the interplay between the Zeeman splitting and the SOC. Our findings suggest an approach of generating spin-resolved chiral electron transport in nanowires.

Carcinogenicity of asbestos has been well established for decades and it has similar approval standards in most advanced countries based on a number of studies and international meetings. However, Korea has been lagging behind such international standards. In this study, we proposed the approval standards of an occupational cancer due to asbestos through intensive review on the Helsinki Criteria, post-Helsinki studies, job exposure matrix (JEM) based on the analysis of domestic reports and recognized occupational lung cancer cases in Korea. The main contents of proposed approval standards are as follows; ① In recognizing an asbestos-induced lung cancer, diagnosis of asbestosis should be based on CT. In addition, initial findings of asbestosis on CT should be considered. ② High Exposure industries and occupations to asbestos should be also taken into account in Korea ③ An expert's determination is warranted in case of a worker who has been concurrently exposed to other carcinogens, even if the asbestos exposure duration is less than 10 years. ④ Determination of a larynx cancer due to asbestos exposure has the same approval standards with an asbestos-induced lung cancer. However, for an ovarian cancer, an expert's judgment is necessary even if asbestosis, pleural plaque or pleural thickening and high concentration asbestos exposure are confirmed. ⑤ Cigarette smoking status or the extent should not affect determination of an occupational cancer caused by asbestos as smoking and asbestos have a synergistic effect in causing a lung cancer and they are involved in carcinogenesis in a complicated manner.

The effects of silybinin, an antioxidant, on the pharmacokinetics of tamoxifen and its metabolite, 4-hydroxytamoxifen, were investigated in rats. A single dose of tamoxifen was administered intravenously (2 mg/kg) and orally (10 mg/kg) without or with silybinin (0.5, 2.5 and 10 mg/kg) to rats. Silybinin significantly altered the pharmacokinetics of orally administered tamoxifen. Compared to those in the oral control group (given tamoxifen alone), the area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC(0-infinity)) and the peak plasma concentration (C(max)) of tamoxifen were significantly (p<0.05 for 2.5 mg/kg, p<0.01 for 10 mg/kg) increased by 40.2-71.3% and 45.2-78.6%, respectively, with silybinin. Consequently, the absolute bioavailability (AB) of tamoxifen in the presence of silybinin (2.5 and 10 mg/kg) was 31.1-38.1%, which was significantly enhanced (p<0.05) compared to that in the oral control group (22.2%). Moreover, the relative bioavailability (RB) of tamoxifen was 1.40- to 1.72-fold greater than that in the control group. Silybinin (10 mg/kg) significantly increased the AUC(0-infinity) (p<0.05, 40.0%) of 4-hydroxytamoxifen, but the metabolite-parent ratio (MR) of 4-hydroxytamoxifen was significantly altered (p<0.05 for 10 mg/kg), implying that the formation of 4-hydroxytamoxifen was considerably affected by silybinin. The enhanced bioavailability of tamoxifen by silybinin might be due to the promotion of intestinal absorption in the small intestine and the reduction of first-pass metabolism of tamoxifen in the small intestine and in the liver. If these results are confirmed in clinical trials, the tamoxifen dosage should be adjusted when tamoxifen is administered with silybinin or silybinin-containing dietary supplements.

Although importation of asbestos to Korea has decreased, there are growing concerns of its hazardous effects. This paper describes the use and occupational exposure to asbestos, and the incidence and mortality of malignant mesotheliomas in Korea. Asbestos raw material imports from other countries peaked between 1990 and 1995, but importation of asbestos-containing and -processed materials has steadily increased until now. A comprehensive exposure survey was conducted in Korea between 1995 and 2006. The average airborne asbestos concentration was lower than from other countries and steadily decreased during the study period. The number of malignant mesothelioma cases in Korea was 48 in 1998, 39 in 1999, 45 in 2000, 38 in 2001, and 46 in 2002. There were 334 deaths due to malignant mesothelioma and an average of 30.4 deaths per year between 1996 and 2006. The number of deaths attributed to malignant mesothelioma ranged from 16 cases in 1999 to 57 cases in 2006. The magnitude of asbestos-related health problems in Korea has been underestimated due to under-diagnosis, incomplete reports, and shorter duration of exposure. A nationwide surveillance system for asbestos exposure and malignant mesothelioma should therefore be implemented.

A rapid and simple procedure was developed for the determination of cephradine in human plasma using liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS). After trichloroacetic acid (TCA) precipitation of proteins from plasma samples, cephradine and cefaclor (the internal standard; IS) were eluted on a CN column. The isocratic mobile phase used consisted of acetonitrile-water-formic acid (25:75:0.1, v/v/v). Cephradine and the IS were both detected in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode at the transitions: m/z 350.0 --> 90.8 for cephradine and m/z 368.1 --> 106.0 for the IS, respectively. The calibration curve was linear over the concentration range from 0.05 to 50 microg/ml, and correlation coefficients were greater than 0.996. The coefficient of variation of assay precision was less than 9.36%, and its accuracy ranged from 87.92% to 111.16%. The chromatographic run time for each plasma sample was less than 3 min. The developed method was successfully applied to a bioequivalence study of cephradine in healthy male volunteers.
