RESUMO

Topologically protected spin whirls in ferromagnets are foreseen as the cart-horse of solitonic information technologies. Nevertheless, the future of skyrmionics may rely on antiferromagnets due to their immunity to dipolar fields, straight motion along the driving force and ultrafast dynamics. While complex topological objects were recently discovered in intrinsic antiferromagnets, mastering their nucleation, stabilization and manipulation with energy-efficient means remains an outstanding challenge. Designing topological polar states in magnetoelectric antiferromagnetic multiferroics would allow one to electrically write, detect and erase topological antiferromagnetic entities. Here we stabilize ferroelectric centre states using a radial electric field in multiferroic BiFeO3 thin films. We show that such polar textures contain flux closures of antiferromagnetic spin cycloids, with distinct antiferromagnetic entities at their cores depending on the electric field polarity. By tuning the epitaxial strain, quadrants of canted antiferromagnetic domains can also be electrically designed. These results open the path to reconfigurable topological states in multiferroic antiferromagnets.

RESUMO

For energy-efficient magnetic memories, switching of perpendicular magnetization by spin-orbit torque (SOT) appears to be a promising solution. This SOT switching requires the assistance of an in-plane magnetic field to break the symmetry. Here, we demonstrate the field-free SOT switching of a perpendicularly magnetized thulium iron garnet (Tm3Fe5O12, TmIG). The polarity of the switching loops, clockwise or counterclockwise, is determined by the direction of the initial current pulses, in contrast with field-assisted switching where the polarity is controlled by the direction of the magnetic field. From Brillouin light scattering, we determined the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) induced by the Pt-TmIG interface. We will discuss the possible origins of field-free switching and the roles of the interfacial DMI and cubic magnetic anisotropy of TmIG. This discussion is substantiated by magnetotransport, Kerr microscopy, and micromagnetic simulations. Our observation of field-free electrical switching of a magnetic insulator is an important milestone for low-power spintronic devices.

RESUMO

The hallmark of spintronics has been the ability of spin-orbit interactions to convert a charge current into a spin current and vice versa, mainly in the bulk of heavy metal thin films. Here, we demonstrate how a light metal interface profoundly affects both the nature of spin-orbit torques and its efficiency in terms of damping-like (HDL) and field-like (HFL) effective fields in ultrathin Co films. We measure unexpectedly HFL/HDL ratios much larger than 1 by inserting a nanometer-thin Al metallic layer in Pt|Co|Al|Pt as compared to a similar stacking, including Cu as a reference. From our modeling, these results evidence the existence of large Rashba interaction at the Co|Al interface generating a giant HFL, which is not expected from a metallic interface. The occurrence of such enhanced torques from an interfacial origin is further validated by demonstrating current-induced magnetization reversal showing a significant decrease of the critical current for switching.

RESUMO

In the room-temperature magnetoelectric multiferroic BiFeO3, the noncollinear antiferromagnetic state is coupled to the ferroelectric order, opening applications for low-power electric-field-controlled magnetic devices. While several strategies have been explored to simplify the ferroelectric landscape, here we directly stabilize a single-domain ferroelectric and spin cycloid state in epitaxial BiFeO3 (111) thin films grown on orthorhombic DyScO3 (011). Comparing them with films grown on SrTiO3 (111), we identify anisotropic in-plane strain as a powerful handle for tailoring the single antiferromagnetic state. In this single-domain multiferroic state, we establish the thickness limit of the coexisting electric and magnetic orders and directly visualize the suppression of the spin cycloid induced by the magnetoelectric interaction below the ultrathin limit of 1.4 nm. This as-grown single-domain multiferroic configuration in BiFeO3 thin films opens an avenue both for fundamental investigations and for electrically controlled noncollinear antiferromagnetic spintronics.

RESUMO

2D materials offer the ability to expose their electronic structure to manipulations by a proximity effect. This could be harnessed to craft properties of 2D interfaces and van der Waals heterostructures in devices and quantum materials. We explore the possibility to create an artificial spin polarized electrode from graphene through proximity interaction with a ferromagnetic insulator to be used in a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ). Ferromagnetic insulator/graphene artificial electrodes were fabricated and integrated in MTJs based on spin analyzers. Evidence of the emergence of spin polarization in proximitized graphene layers was observed through the occurrence of tunnel magnetoresistance. We deduced a spin dependent splitting of graphene's Dirac band structure (∼15 meV) induced by the proximity effect, potentially leading to full spin polarization and opening the way to gating. The extracted spin signals illustrate the potential of 2D quantum materials based on proximity effects to craft spintronics functionalities, from vertical MTJs memory cells to logic circuits.

RESUMO

Room-temperature skyrmions in ferromagnetic films and multilayers show promise for encoding information bits in new computing technologies. Despite recent progress, ferromagnetic order generates dipolar fields that prevent ultrasmall skyrmion sizes, and allows a transverse deflection of moving skyrmions that hinders their efficient manipulation. Antiferromagnetic skyrmions shall lift these limitations. Here we demonstrate that room-temperature antiferromagnetic skyrmions can be stabilized in synthetic antiferromagnets (SAFs), in which perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, antiferromagnetic coupling and chiral order can be adjusted concurrently. Utilizing interlayer electronic coupling to an adjacent bias layer, we demonstrate that spin-spiral states obtained in a SAF with vanishing perpendicular magnetic anisotropy can be turned into isolated antiferromagnetic skyrmions. We also provide model-based estimates of skyrmion size and stability, showing that room-temperature antiferromagnetic skyrmions below 10 nm in radius can be anticipated in further optimized SAFs. Antiferromagnetic skyrmions in SAFs may thus solve major issues associated with ferromagnetic skyrmions for low-power spintronic devices.

RESUMO

Magnetic skyrmions are particle-like deformations in a magnetic texture. They have great potential as information carriers in spintronic devices because of their interesting topological properties and favorable motion under spin currents. A new method of nucleating skyrmions at nanoscale defect sites, created in a controlled manner with focused ion beam irradiation, in polycrystalline magnetic multilayer samples with an interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, is reported. This new method has three notable advantages: 1) localization of nucleation; 2) stability over a larger range of external field strengths, including stability at zero field; and 3) existence of skyrmions in material systems where, prior to defect fabrication, skyrmions were not previously obtained by field cycling. Additionally, it is observed that the size of defect nucleated skyrmions is uninfluenced by the defect itself-provided that the artificial defects are controlled to be smaller than the inherent skyrmion size. All of these characteristics are expected to be useful toward the goal of realizing a skyrmion-based spintronic device. This phenomenon is studied with a range of transmission electron microscopy techniques to probe quantitatively the magnetic behavior at the defects with applied field and correlate this with the structural impact of the defects.

RESUMO

Chirality in condensed matter has recently become a topic of the utmost importance because of its significant role in the understanding and mastering of a large variety of new fundamental physical mechanisms. Versatile experimental approaches, capable to reveal easily the exact winding of order parameters, are therefore essential. Here we report x-ray resonant magnetic scattering as a straightforward tool to reveal directly the properties of chiral magnetic systems. We show that it can straightforwardly and unambiguously determine the main characteristics of chiral magnetic distributions: i.e., its chiral nature, the quantitative winding sense (clockwise or counterclockwise), and its type, i.e., Néel [cycloidal] or Bloch [helical]. This method is model independent, does not require a priori knowledge of the magnetic parameters, and can be applied to any system with magnetic domains ranging from a few nanometers (wavelength limited) to several microns. By using prototypical multilayers with tailored magnetic chiralities driven by spin-orbit-related effects at Co|Pt interfaces, we illustrate the strength of this method.

RESUMO

Magnetic skyrmions are nanoscale windings of the spin configuration that hold great promise for technology due to their topology-related properties and extremely reduced sizes. After the recent observation at room temperature of sub-100 nm skyrmions stabilized by interfacial chiral interaction in magnetic multilayers, several pending questions remain to be solved, notably about the means to nucleate individual compact skyrmions or the exact nature of their motion. In this study, a method leading to the formation of magnetic skyrmions in a micrometer-sized track using homogeneous current injection is evidenced. Spin-transfer-induced motion of these small electrical-current-generated skyrmions is then demonstrated and the role of the out-of-plane magnetic field in the stabilization of the moving skyrmions is also analyzed. The results of these experimental observations of spin torque induced motion are compared to micromagnetic simulations reproducing a granular type, nonuniform magnetic multilayer in order to address the particularly important role of the magnetic inhomogeneities on the current-induced motion of sub-100 nm skyrmions for which the material grains size is comparable to the skyrmion diameter.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Patient-specific anatomy may influence the final intraventricular positioning of inflow cannula in left ventricular assist device (LVAD) recipients. An association exists between such positioning and clinical outcomes (specifically, orientation toward the interventricular septum has negative prognostic implications). Alternative commercially available LVADs are characterized by markedly different design, with potential consequences on intrathoracic fitting among individual patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cohort of 13 LVAD recipients (either HeartMate II-group A or Jarvik 2000 Flowmaker-group B) was evaluated. On postoperative computed tomography scans, we reconstructed the implanted LVAD (semiautomatic segmentation), defined the target mitral orifice (3D Slicer software), and built a coordinate system to quantify the coaxiality of the cannula with the mitral valve axis (angles φ and θ, expressed as percentage variation from the ideal value φ = Î¸ = 0°). RESULTS: Group A presented significantly greater average percentage variation of the φ angle (significantly greater orientation of the intraventricular cannula toward the interventricular septum; 33.2% ± 32.1% versus 1.9% ± 0.9%, P = 0.001). Group A presented significantly greater average percentage variation of the θ angle (52.7% ± 23.6% versus 14.5% ± 6.3%, P = 0.013). CONCLUSIONS: The device assessed in group B showed in the present series better average coaxiality with the mitral orifice. Such finding is related with its design (total intraventricular placement) and interaction with thoracic structures. The present method is being integrated in the development of LVAD virtual implantation tools and may help physicians in patient-specific selection among alternative devices.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Mechanical and hemodynamic factors are among the determinants of patient-device interaction and early-term and long-term outcomes in left ventricular assist device (LVAD) recipients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We are currently developing computer simulation tools aimed at (1) analyze the intrathoracic and intracavitary positioning of LVADs after implantation and establish correlation with clinical outcomes; (2) assist surgeons in the choice of device and of left ventricular coring site for optimized intrathoracic placement and function; and (3) facilitate the planning of less-invasive LVAD implantation. A virtual representation of LVAD (mesh device component) was created through cone-beam computed tomography and semiautomatic segmentation. A modular framework software (CamiTK, Grenoble, France) was used to create a three-dimensional representation of patients' computed tomography (CT) scan and incorporate the mesh device component for virtual implantation. RESULTS: Device reconstruction was included into a dedicated software with the purposes of virtual implantation, based on the preoperative CT scan of surgical candidates. CONCLUSIONS: We present herein the first digital reconstruction of the novel HeartMate 3 LVAD. Virtual implantation on the basis of preoperative CT scan is feasible within a user-friendly interactive software. Future studies will be focused on correlation with clinical variables.

RESUMO

The last decade has seen significant improvements in our understanding of skyrmions current induced dynamics, along with their room temperature stabilization, however, the impact of local material inhomogeneities still remains an issue that impedes reaching the regime of steady state motion of these spin textures. Here, we study the spin-torque driven motion of skyrmions in synthetic ferrimagnetic multilayers with the aim of achieving high mobility and reduced skyrmion Hall effect. We consider Pt|Co|Tb multilayers of various thicknesses with antiferromagnetic coupling between the Co and Tb magnetization. The increase of Tb thickness in the multilayers reduces the total magnetic moment and increases the spin-orbit torques allowing to reach velocities up to 400 ms-1 for skyrmions with diameters of about 160 nm. We demonstrate that due to reduced skyrmion Hall effect combined with the edge repulsion of the magnetic track, the skyrmions move along the track without any transverse deflection. Further, by comparing the field-induced domain wall motion and current-induced skyrmion motion, we demonstrate that the skyrmions at the largest current densities present all the characteristics of a dynamical flow regime.

RESUMO

We investigated the prevalence of persecutory, grandiose, reference, control, and religious delusions in adult clinical populations worldwide and whether they differed according to country characteristics or age, gender, or year of publication. 123 studies met inclusion criteria, across 30 countries; 102 (115 samples, n = 20,979) were included in the main random-effects meta-analysis of studies measuring multiple delusional themes (21 in a separate analysis of studies in recording a single theme). Persecutory delusions were most common (pooled point estimate: 64.5%, CI = 60.6-68.3, k = 106, followed by reference (39.7%, CI 34.5-45.3, k = 65), grandiose (28.2, CI 24.8-31.9, k = 100), control 21.6%, CI 17.8-26.0, k = 53), and religious delusions 18.3%, CI 15.4-21.6, k = 50). Data from studies recording one theme were broadly consistent with these findings. There were no effects for study quality or publication date. Prevalences were higher in samples exclusively with psychotic patients but did not differ between developed and developing countries, or by country individualism, power distance, or prevalence of atheism. Religious and control delusions were more prevalent in countries with higher income inequality. We hypothesize that these delusional themes reflect universal human dilemmas and existential challenges.

RESUMO

Three-dimensional spin textures emerge as promising quasi-particles for encoding information in future spintronic devices. The third dimension provides more malleability regarding their properties and more flexibility for potential applications. However, the stabilization and characterization of such quasi-particles in easily implementable systems remain a work in progress. Here we observe a three-dimensional magnetic texture that sits in the interior of magnetic thin films aperiodic multilayers and possesses a characteristic ellipsoidal shape. Interestingly, these objects that we call skyrmionic cocoons can coexist with more standard tubular skyrmions going through all the multilayer as evidenced by the existence of two very different contrasts in room temperature magnetic force microscopy. The presence of these novel skyrmionic textures as well as the understanding of their layer resolved chiral and topological properties have been investigated by micromagnetic simulations. Finally, we show that the skyrmionic cocoons can be electrically detected using magneto-transport measurements.

RESUMO

We present a bias-controlled spin-filtering mechanism in spin-valves including a hybrid organic chain/graphene interface. Wet growth conditions of oligomeric molecular chains would usually lead, during standard CMOS-compatible fabrication processes, to the quenching of spintronics properties of metallic spin sources due to oxidation. We demonstrate by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy that the use of a protective graphene layer fully preserves the metallic character of the ferromagnetic surface and thus its capability to deliver spin polarized currents. We focus here on a small aromatic chain of controllable lengths, formed by nitrobenzene monomers and derived from the commercial 4-nitrobenzene diazonium tetrafluoroborate, covalently attached to the graphene passivated spin sources thanks to electroreduction. A unique bias dependent switch of the spin signal is then observed in complete spin valve devices, from minority to majority spin carriers filtering. First-principles calculations are used to highlight the key role played by the spin-dependent hybridization of electronic states present at the different interfaces. Our work is a first step towards the exploration of spin transport using different functional molecular chains. It opens the perspective of atomic tailoring of magnetic junction devices towards spin and quantum transport control, thanks to the flexibility of ambient electrochemical surface functionalization processes.

RESUMO

Resistive switching effects offer new opportunities in the field of conventional memories as well as in the booming area of neuromorphic computing. Here the authors demonstrate memristive switching effects produced by a redox-driven oxygen exchange in tunnel junctions based on NdNiO3 , a strongly correlated electron system characterized by the presence of a metal-to-insulator transition (MIT). Strikingly, a strong interplay exists between the MIT and the redox mechanism, which on the one hand modifies the MIT itself, and on the other hand radically affects the tunnel resistance switching and the resistance states' lifetime. That results in a very unique temperature behavior and endows the junctions with multiple degrees of freedom. The obtained results bring up fundamental questions on the interplay between electronic correlations and the creation and mobility of oxygen vacancies in nickelates, opening a new avenue toward mimicking neuromorphic functions by exploiting the electric-field control of correlated states.

RESUMO

We report on large spin-filtering effects in epitaxial graphene-based spin valves, strongly enhanced in our specific multilayer case. Our results were obtained by the effective association of chemical vapor deposited (CVD) multilayer graphene with a high quality epitaxial Ni(111) ferromagnetic spin source. We highlight that the Ni(111) spin source electrode crystallinity and metallic state are preserved and stabilized by multilayer graphene CVD growth. Complete nanometric spin valve junctions are fabricated using a local probe indentation process, and spin properties are extracted from the graphene-protected ferromagnetic electrode through the use of a reference Al2O3/Co spin analyzer. Strikingly, spin-transport measurements in these structures give rise to large negative tunnel magneto-resistance TMR = -160%, pointing to a particularly large spin polarization for the Ni(111)/Gr interface PNi/Gr, evaluated up to -98%. We then discuss an emerging physical picture of graphene-ferromagnet systems, sustained both by experimental data and ab initio calculations, intimately combining efficient spin filtering effects arising (i) from the bulk band structure of the graphene layers purifying the extracted spin direction, (ii) from the hybridization effects modulating the amplitude of spin polarized scattering states over the first few graphene layers at the interface, and (iii) from the epitaxial interfacial matching of the graphene layers with the spin-polarized Ni surface selecting well-defined spin polarized channels. Importantly, these main spin selection effects are shown to be either cooperating or competing, explaining why our transport results were not observed before. Overall, this study unveils a path to harness the full potential of low Resitance.Area (RA) graphene interfaces in efficient spin-based devices.

RESUMO

We present a growth process relying on pulsed laser deposition for the elaboration of complex van der Waals heterostructures on large scales, at a 400 °C CMOS-compatible temperature. Illustratively, we define a multilayer quantum well geometry through successive in situ growths, leading to WSe2 being encapsulated into WS2 layers. The structural constitution of the quantum well geometry is confirmed by Raman spectroscopy combined with transmission electron microscopy. The large-scale high homogeneity of the resulting 2D van der Waals heterostructure is also validated by macro- and microscale Raman mappings. We illustrate the benefit of this integrative in situ approach by showing the structural preservation of even the most fragile 2D layers once encapsulated in a van der Waals heterostructure. Finally, we fabricate a vertical tunneling device based on these large-scale layers and discuss the clear signature of electronic transport controlled by the quantum well configuration with ab initio calculations in support. The flexibility of this direct growth approach, with multilayer stacks being built in a single run, allows for the definition of complex 2D heterostructures barely accessible with usual exfoliation or transfer techniques of 2D materials. Reminiscent of the III-V semiconductors' successful exploitation, our approach unlocks virtually infinite combinations of large 2D material families in any complex van der Waals heterostructure design.

RESUMO

We report on spin transport in WS2-based 2D-magnetic tunnel junctions (2D-MTJs), unveiling a band structure spin filtering effect specific to the transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) family. WS2 mono-, bi-, and trilayers are derived by a chemical vapor deposition process and further characterized by Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The WS2 layers are then integrated in complete Co/Al2O3/WS2/Co MTJ hybrid spin-valve structures. We make use of a tunnel Co/Al2O3 spin analyzer to probe the extracted spin-polarized current from the WS2/Co interface and its evolution as a function of WS2 layer thicknesses. For monolayer WS2, our technological approach enables the extraction of the largest spin signal reported for a TMDC-based spin valve, corresponding to a spin polarization of PCo/WS2 = 12%. Interestingly, for bi- and trilayer WS2, the spin signal is reversed, which indicates a switch in the mechanism of interfacial spin extraction. With the support of ab initio calculations, we propose a model to address the experimentally measured inversion of the spin polarization based on the change in the WS2 band structure while going from monolayer (direct bandgap) to bilayer (indirect bandgap). These experiments illustrate the rich potential of the families of semiconducting 2D materials for the control of spin currents in 2D-MTJs.

RESUMO

Noncollinear spin textures in ferromagnetic ultrathin films are currently the subject of renewed interest since the discovery of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). This antisymmetric exchange interaction selects a given chirality for the spin textures and allows stabilizing configurations with nontrivial topology including chiral domain walls (DWs) and magnetic skyrmions. Moreover, it has many crucial consequences on the dynamical properties of these topological structures. In recent years, the study of noncollinear spin textures has been extended from single ultrathin layers to magnetic multilayers with broken inversion symmetry. This extension of the structures in the vertical dimension allows room temperature stability and very efficient current-induced motion for both Néel DWs and skyrmions. We show how, in these multilayered systems, the interlayer interactions can actually lead to hybrid chiral magnetization arrangements. The described thickness-dependent reorientation of DWs is experimentally confirmed by studying demagnetized multilayers through circular dichroism in x-ray resonant magnetic scattering. We also demonstrate a simple yet reliable method for determining the magnitude of the DMI from static domain measurements even in the presence of these hybrid chiral structures by taking into account the actual profile of the DWs. The existence of these novel hybrid chiral textures has far-reaching implications on how to stabilize and manipulate DWs, as well as skymionic structures in magnetic multilayers.
