BACKGROUND: Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) and EEG-guided neurofeedback techniques can reduce motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the effects of their combination are unknown. Our objective was to determine the immediate and short-term effects on motor and non-motor symptoms, and neurophysiological measures, of rTMS and EEG-guided neurofeedback, alone or combined, compared to no intervention, in people with PD. METHODS: A randomized, single-blinded controlled trial with 4 arms was conducted. Group A received eight bilateral, high-frequency (10 Hz) rTMS sessions over the Primary Motor Cortices; Group B received eight 30-minute EEG-guided neurofeedback sessions focused on reducing average bilateral alpha and beta bands; Group C received a combination of A and B; Group D did not receive any therapy. The primary outcome measure was the UPDRS-III at post-intervention and two weeks later. Secondary outcomes were functional mobility, limits of stability, depression, health-related quality-of-life and cortical silent periods. Treatment effects were obtained by longitudinal analysis of covariance mixed-effects models. RESULTS: Forty people with PD participated (27 males, age = 63 ± 8.26 years, baseline UPDRS-III = 15.63 ± 6.99 points, H&Y = 1-3). Group C showed the largest effect on motor symptoms, health-related quality-of-life and cortical silent periods, followed by Group A and Group B. Negligible differences between Groups A-C and Group D for functional mobility or limits of stability were found. CONCLUSIONS: The combination of rTMS and EEG-guided neurofeedback diminished overall motor symptoms and increased quality-of-life, but this was not reflected by changes in functional mobility, postural stability or depression levels. BACKGROUND: Black corn possesses potent antioxidants, but these are mostly lost during processing. In this study we evaluated the antioxidant content of two different black ('Millo Corvo') corn-based products (i.e. tortillas and cookies) subject to moderate processing. A parallel study on white and yellow corns was carried out for comparison. RESULTS: Raw 'Millo Corvo' flour exhibited higher contents of phenolic acids, flavonoids, and particularly anthocyanins than white and yellow flours did. Phenolic acids decreased in cookies but did not in tortillas; flavonoids did not exhibit a clear tendency, and anthocyanins were always preserved. Antioxidant activity (AA) obtained for 'Millo Corvo' samples was twice as high as the value measured in white and yellow corns in terms of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity. The difference in AA was even more remarkable in terms of photochemiluminiscence antiradical activity. The conditions used during the cookie-making process enabled the natural antioxidant characteristics of 'Millo Corvo' to be preserved. However, the conditions applied to prepare tortillas resulted in major losses. CONCLUSIONS: The initial phenolics, in particular anthocyanins, and AA of 'Millo Corvo' flour can be maintained during processing as long as the conditions applied are 183 °C for 20 min in the absence of a high water content. Millo corvo products possess improved antioxidant characteristics compared with those from white and yellow corns. Millo corvo is a promising black corn type to prepare health-promoting corn-based foodstuffs. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

PURPOSE: PALB2 variants have been scarcely described in Argentinian and Latin-American reports. In this study, we describe molecular and clinical characteristics of PALB2 mutations found in multi-gene panels (MP) from breast-ovarian cancer (BOC) families in different institutions from Argentina. METHODS: We retrospectively identified PALB2 pathogenic (PV) and likely pathogenic (LPV) variants from a cohort of 1905 MP results, provided by one local lab (Heritas) and SITHER (Hereditary Tumor Information System) public database. All patients met hereditary BOC clinical criteria for testing, according to current guidelines. RESULTS: The frequency of PALB2 mutations is 2.78% (53/1905). Forty-eight (90.5%) are PV and five (9.5%) are LPV. Most of the 18 different mutations (89%) are nonsense and frameshift types and 2 variants are novel. One high-rate recurrent PV (Y551*) is present in 43% (23/53) of the unrelated index cases. From the 53 affected carriers, 94% have BC diagnosis with 14% of bilateral cases. BC phenotype is mainly invasive ductal (78%) with 62% of hormone-receptor positive and 22% of triple negative tumors. Self-reported ethnic background of the cohort is West European (66%) and native Latin-American (20%) which is representative of Buenos Aires and other big urban areas of the country. CONCLUSION: This is the first report describing molecular and clinical characteristics of PALB2 carriers in Argentina. Frequency of PALB2 PV in Argentinian HBOC families is higher than in other reported populations. Y551* is a recurrent mutation that seems to be responsible for almost 50% of PALB2 cases.

RESUMO

The majority of university curricula for health professionals does not incorporate courses on human nutrition and its links with human and planetary health. This primarily applies to medical and pharmacy students, who have important counselling roles and are at the forefront of public health. To address this important issue, EIT Food recently launched an online course on nutrition, health, and sustainability. Learners were able to provide feedback on the course through an end-of-course survey and social interaction on the FutureLearn platform. The course was very well attended worldwide and received positive feedback from learners. A total of 3,858 students enrolled in the program, from >20 countries. Learners reported inadequate training on nutrition in their own curriculum and indicated they would use key insights from the course to inform their own practice. This report provides insights from the course, which could be used as guidance for future initiatives.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to prospectively analyze memory and executive and social cognitive functioning in patients with drug-resistant frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) and temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) with focal lesions and isolate the impact of intellectual ability on specific deficits. METHODS: A neuropsychological evaluation was performed in 23 children with FLE, 22 children with TLE, and 36 healthy pediatric controls (HCs). Patients in the epilepsy groups had a range of lesions, including low-grade epilepsy-associated tumors (LEAT), focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) type II, and mesial temporal sclerosis (MS). RESULTS: There were no significant differences between children with FLE and TLE regarding memory, executive, or social cognitive functioning. General Ability Index (GAI) was a predictor of memory, executive function, and social cognition scores and was influenced by age at onset, duration of epilepsy, and number of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) prescribed at the time of assessment. Working Memory Index scores of patients with TLE, which measure verbal mnesic processing, were significantly lower than those of HCs and patients with TLE. The greatest differences in both clinical groups compared to HCs were recorded in cognitive executive functions, and patients with FLE had lower scores in this domain. Regarding behavioral executive functions, patients with TLE presented impaired emotional control and impulse inhibition and patients with FLE exhibited decreased flexibility. CONCLUSION: Consistent with previous research, our findings provide further detailed evidence of small differences in cognitive performance among children with FLE and TLE. These differences emerge on analysis of the factors with which deficits are associated.

The present review aims to give dietary recommendations to reduce the occurrence of the Maillard reaction in foods and in vivo to reduce the body's advanced glycation/lipoxidation end products (AGE/ALE) pool. A healthy diet, food reformulation and good culinary practices may be feasible for achieving the goal. A varied diet rich in fresh vegetables and fruits, non-added sugar beverages containing inhibitors of the Maillard reaction, and foods prepared by steaming and poaching as culinary techniques is recommended. Intake of supplements and novel foods with low sugars, low fats, enriched in bioactive compounds from food and waste able to modulate carbohydrate metabolism and reduce body's AGE/ALE pool is also recommended. In conclusion, the recommendations made for healthy eating by the Spanish Society of Community Nutrition (SENC) and Harvard University seem to be adequate to reduce dietary AGE/ALE, the body's AGE/ALE pool and to achieve sustainable nutrition and health.

The present investigation aimed to provide novel information on the chemical composition and in vitro bioaccessibility of bioactive compounds from raw citrus pomaces (mandarin varieties Clemenule and Ortanique and orange varieties Navel and Valencia). The effects of the baking process on their bioaccessibility was also assessed. Samples of pomaces and biscuits containing them as an ingredient were digested, mimicking the human enzymatic oral gastrointestinal digestion process, and the composition of the digests were analyzed. UHPLC-MS/MS results of the citrus pomaces flavonoid composition showed nobiletin, hesperidin/neohesperidin, tangeretin, heptamethoxyflavone, tetramethylscutellarein, and naringin/narirutin. The analysis of the digests indicated the bioaccessibility of compounds possessing antioxidant [6.6-11.0 mg GAE/g digest, 65.5-97.1 µmol Trolox Equivalents (TE)/g digest, and 135.5-214.8 µmol TE/g digest for total phenol content (TPC), ABTS, and ORAC-FL methods, respectively; significant reduction (p < 0.05) in Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) formation under tert-butyl hydroperoxide (1 mM)-induced conditions in IEC-6 and CCD-18Co cells when pre-treated with concentrations 5-25 µg/mL of the digests], anti-inflammatory [significant reduction (p < 0.05) in nitric oxide (NO) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW264.7 macrophages], and antidiabetic (IC50 3.97-11.42 mg/mL and 58.04-105.68 mg/mL for α-glucosidase and α-amylase inhibition capacities) properties in the citrus pomaces under study. In addition, orange pomace biscuits with the nutrition claims "no-added sugars" and "source of fiber", as well as those with good sensory quality (6.9-6.7, scale 1-9) and potential health promoting properties, were obtained. In conclusion, the results supported the feasibility of citrus pomace as a natural sustainable source of health-promoting compounds such as flavonoids. Unfractionated orange pomace may be employed as a functional food ingredient for reducing the risk of pathophysiological processes linked to oxidative stress, inflammation, and carbohydrate metabolism, such as diabetes, among others.

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder. This disease is characterized by motor symptoms, such as bradykinesia, tremor, and rigidity. Although balance impairment is characteristic of advanced stages, it can be present with less intensity since the beginning of the disease. Approximately 60% of PD patients fall once a year and 40% recurrently. On the other hand, cognitive symptoms affect up to 20% of patients with PD in early stages and can even precede the onset of motor symptoms. There are cognitive requirements for balance and can be challenged when attention is diverted or reduced, linking a worse balance and a higher probability of falls with a slower cognitive processing speed and attentional problems. Cognitive rehabilitation of attention and processing speed can lead to an improvement in postural stability in patients with Parkinson's. Methods: We present a parallel and controlled randomized clinical trial (RCT) to assess the impact on balance of a protocol based on cognitive rehabilitation focused on sustained attention through the NeuronUP platform (Neuronup SI, La Rioja, Spain) in patients with PD. For 4 weeks, patients in the experimental group will receive cognitive therapy three days a week while the control group will not receive any therapy. The protocol has been registered at trials.gov NCT04730466. Conclusions: Cognitive therapy efficacy on balance improvement may open the possibility of new rehabilitation strategies for prevention of falls in PD, reducing morbidity, and saving costs to the health care system.

Cannabis sativa is an aromatic annual flowering plant with several botanical varieties, used for different purposes, like the production of fibers, the production of oil from the seeds, and especially for recreational or medical purposes. Phytocannabinoids (terpenophenolic compounds derived from the plant), include the well-known psychoactive cannabinoid Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol, and many non-psychoactive cannabinoids, like cannabidiol. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) comprises of endocannabinoid ligands, enzymes for synthesis and degradation of such ligands, and receptors. This system is widely distributed in the gastrointestinal tract, where phytocannabinoids exert potent effects, particularly under pathological (i.e., inflammatory) conditions. Herein, we will first look at the hemp plant as a possible source of new functional food ingredients and nutraceuticals that might be eventually useful to treat or even prevent gastrointestinal conditions. Subsequently, we will briefly describe the ECS and the general pharmacology of phytocannabinoids. Finally, we will revise the available data showing that non-psychoactive phytocannabinoids, particularly cannabidiol, may be useful to treat different disorders and diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. With the increasing interest in the development of functional foods for a healthy life, the non-psychoactive phytocannabinoids are hoped to find a place as nutraceuticals and food ingredients also for a healthy gastrointestinal tract function.

This study aimed to assess the physicochemical, nutritional and sensory properties of gluten-free breads containing isolated coffee cascara dietary fiber (ICCDF) as a food ingredient. ICCDF was obtained by aqueous extraction. The oil and water holding capacity and the nutritional profile of the novel ingredient were determined. Its safety was certificated by analysis of ochratoxin A, caffeine and gluten. Gluten-free bread formulations were prepared enriching a commercial bakery premix in rice protein (8%) and ICCDF (3% and 4.5%). Nutritional profile of the novel gluten-free breads (dietary fiber, protein, amino acids, lipids, fatty acid profile and resistant starch), as well as bread volume, crumb density, moisture, firmness, elasticity and color intensity were determined. A sensory quantitative descriptive analysis of the breads was conducted using eight trained panelists. New breads showed significantly higher (p < 0.05) content of dietary fiber and protein than the control bread. The addition of ICCDF allowed increasing dough yield, a less crumb firmness and a higher crumb elasticity. The nutrition claims "source of protein and high in dietary fiber" were assigned to the new formulations. In conclusion, a certificated gluten-free bread with improved nutritional and physicochemical properties and good sensorial profile was obtained.

Grapes contain high contents of phenolics, which are known to possess health promoting properties. Exogenous application of phytoregulators, mainly methyl jasmonate and abscisic acid, to grapevines to enhance phenolic content has been reported (Portu et al. Sci Hortic 240: 378-386, 2018; Ranjbaran et al. J Faculty Agric Kyushu Univ 56: 263-267, 2011). However, these phytohormones possess some drawbacks that can be overcome by using other phytoregulators as an alternative. In this work the effect of an additional phytohormone, salicylic acid, to grapevines on the phenolics and antioxidant activity of grapes was investigated. To our knowledge, salicylic acid has been earlier applied to grapevines to affect grape ripening and quality (Lóay. Egyptian J Basic Applied Sci 4: 227-230, 2017). However, this is the first time it is applied to increase the total phenolic content. As a result of our study, total phenol content and the free radical scavenging activity increased with 100 mg l-1 of salicylic acid. In particular, the total phenol content increased from 768.3 to 1843.5 mg 100 g-1 and the IC50 values decreased from 45.2 to 13.2 mg ml-1. Also the contents of individual phenolics mostly increased significantly with 100 mg l-1 of salicylic acid, except anthocyanins. Higher concentrations of salicylic acid (ie, 500 mg l-1vs 100 mg l-1) did not result in higher contents of phenolics. Therefore, 100 mg l-1 was selected as the best salicylic acid concentration to be used in the treatment. The application of exogenous salicylic acid to grapevines is an interesting agronomic practice to obtain table grapes with improved health-promoting properties.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a well-recognized health problem, with an estimated worldwide prevalence of 25%.1 It is associated with metabolic syndrome (MetSx) and complications such as cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. However, the main cause of death in patients with NAFLD is derived from cardiovascular disease, and outcome seems to be determined by the degree of hepatic fibrosis.2 The prevalence of NAFLD and associated cardiovascular risk factors in asymptomatic patients in Mexico are poorly documented, despite having one of the highest rates of obesity and metabolic syndrome worldwide.3.

There has been exciting progress in diagnosis and in the treatment of allergic patients. The objective of this review is to summarize the most relevant contributions in the past 10 years with a special focus on the pediatric population allergic to aeroallergens and provide the most relevant references and practical issues for the decision-making. Current guidelines on allergy diagnosis recommend a thorough clinical history as the first step, followed by allergen extract testing using an in vivo prick test and/or an in vitro specific IgE test. Molecular diagnosis is recommended when previous tests are inconclusive. In practice, the most important factors to decide the AIT treatment are the actual intensity and duration of the patient's symptoms and the availability of appropriate AIT products for the patient's sensitization profile at high allergen concentrations and with confirmed efficacy and safety from clinical trials. This document summarizes outstanding references for allergic immunotherapy decision-making and provides summary tables and figures analyzing the most important factors related to the decision for allergen immunotherapy and the safety risks related. The experts concluded that AIT is efficacious and safe for the treatment of allergic patients that is available for the most frequent aeroallergens.What is Known:• The prevalence of allergic asthma and rhinitis in children has increased in recent decades.• The efficacy and safety of allergen immunotherapy has been shown in multiple studies and systematic reviews.What is New:• This document summarizes outstanding references for allergic immunotherapy decision-making and provides summary tables and figures analyzing the most important factors related to the decision for allergen immunotherapy and the safety risks related. Recommendations of expert authors for the decision of the patients more suitable for allergen immunotherapy are included.

BACKGROUND: The nutritional effects of both table olives and olive oil are attributed not only to their fatty acids but also to antioxidant phenolics such as phenolic acids. Delays in oil processing usually result in undesirable oxidation and hydrolysis processes leading to formation of free fatty acids. These alterations create the need to process oil immediately after olive harvest. However, phenolic content decreases drastically during olive storage resulting in lower quality oil. In the present study we propose postharvest methyl jasmonate treatment as a mean to avoid changes in fatty acid composition and losses of phenolic acids during olive storage. RESULTS: Contents of fatty acids and phenolic acids were estimated in methyl jasmonate treated olives throughout 30-day storage, as compared with those of untreated olives. Significant decreases of saturated fatty acids were observed in treated samples whereas increases of oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids were respectively measured (i.e. from 50.8% to 64.5%, from 7.2% to 9.1% and from 1.5% to 9.3%). Also, phenolic acid contents increased significantly in treated olives. Particularly, increases of gallic acid from 1.35 to 6.29 mg kg-1 , chlorogenic acid from 9.18 to 16.21 mg kg-1 , vanillic acid from 9.61 to 16.99 mg kg-1 , caffeic acid from 5.12 to 12.55 mg kg-1 , p-coumaric acid from 0.96 to 5.31 mg kg-1 and ferulic acid from 4.05 to 10.43 mg kg-1 were obtained. CONCLUSION: Methyl jasmonate treatment is proposed as an alternative postharvest technique to traditional methods to guarantee olive oil quality when oil processing is delayed and olive fruits have to necessarily to be stored. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry.

In the present study, we evaluated the effect of methyl jasmonate (MeJA) treatment on strawberry phenolic composition. Strawberry extracts contain a mixture of phenolic compounds possessing several biological properties. We demonstrated that these extracts were more effective in inducing apoptosis in HeLa cells compared to phenolic preparations derived from untreated strawberries. Treatment of strawberries with 0.5% MeJA resulted in increased polyphenols content (from 7.4 to 8.6 mM quercetin equivalents) and antioxidant properties (from 3.9 to 4.6 mM quercetin equivalents). The identification and quantification of phenolic compounds by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry in the strawberry extracts showed that cyanidin glucoside, pelargonidin glucoside, and ellagic glucoside acid were significantly higher in strawberries treated with MeJA. Phenolic extracts from MeJA-treated strawberries significantly decreased the cell viability in HeLa cells, compared to extracts derived from untreated fruits. We hypothesized that the enhanced apoptotic activity of MeJA-treated strawberries was due to a synergistic or additive effect of different phenolic compounds present in the extract, rather than the activity of a single molecule.

In this paper, an intelligent scheme for detecting incipient defects in spur gears is presented. In fact, the study has been undertaken to determine these defects in a single propeller system of a small-sized unmanned helicopter. It is important to remark that although the study focused on this particular system, the obtained results could be extended to other systems known as AUVs (Autonomous Unmanned Vehicles), where the usage of polymer gears in the vehicle transmission is frequent. Few studies have been carried out on these kinds of gears. In this paper, an experimental platform has been adapted for the study and several samples have been prepared. Moreover, several vibration signals have been measured and their time-frequency characteristics have been taken as inputs to the diagnostic system. In fact, a diagnostic system based on an artificial intelligence strategy has been devised. Furthermore, techniques based on several paradigms of the Artificial Intelligence (Neural Networks, Fuzzy systems and Genetic Algorithms) have been applied altogether in order to design an efficient fault diagnostic system. A hybrid Genetic Neuro-Fuzzy system has been developed, where it is possible, at the final stage of the learning process, to express the fault diagnostic system as a set of fuzzy rules. Several trials have been carried out and satisfactory results have been achieved.

Nowadays, coffee beans are almost exclusively used for the preparation of the beverage. The sustainability of coffee production can be achieved introducing new applications for the valorization of coffee by-products. Coffee silverskin is the by-product generated during roasting, and because of its powerful antioxidant capacity, coffee silverskin aqueous extract (CSE) may be used for other applications, such as antiaging cosmetics and dermaceutics. This study aims to contribute to the coffee sector's sustainability through the application of CSE to preserve skin health. Preclinical data regarding the antiaging properties of CSE employing human keratinocytes and Caenorhabditis elegans are collected during the present study. Accelerated aging was induced by tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BOOH) in HaCaT cells and by ultraviolet radiation C (UVC) in C. elegans. Results suggest that the tested concentrations of coffee extracts were not cytotoxic, and CSE 1 mg/mL gave resistance to skin cells when oxidative damage was induced by t-BOOH. On the other hand, nematodes treated with CSE (1 mg/mL) showed a significant increased longevity compared to those cultured on a standard diet. In conclusion, our results support the antiaging properties of the CSE and its great potential for improving skin health due to its antioxidant character associated with phenols among other bioactive compounds present in the botanical material.

BACKGROUND: Chemical elicitation is one of the most effective methods currently used to enrich plant foods in bioactive compounds. Methyl jasmonate (MJ) has been described as a very useful elicitor of some plant compounds, polyphenols among them. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of pre-harvest MJ application on the increase in the main flavonoids and the antioxidant properties of black currant (Ribes nigrum) cultivars. RESULTS: Significant enhancement of individual and total anthocyanins was measured after elicitation with MJ, particularly when a concentration of 0.2 mmol L(-1) was used. Total anthocyanins increased from 28288.74 ± 253.65 to 43561.08 ± 145.87 mg kg(-1) in Ben Hope black currants after elicitation with 0.2 mmol L(-1) MJ. Similarly, an increase from 35986.04 ± 287.98 to 41320.22 ± 109.38 mg kg(-1) was estimated in Ben Alder cultivar. Black currant flavonols were not individually affected by the treatment; however, total flavonols increased from 3115.21 ± 12.11 to 3268.41 ± 8.91 mg kg(-1) in Ben Hope and from 3016.38 ± 10.07 to 3110.95 ± 8.57 mg kg(-1) in Ben Alder. Antioxidant properties of black currants as measured by DPPH and ABTS assays improved proportionally to the increase in flavonoid content after MJ elicitation. CONCLUSION: Pre-harvest elicitation with MJ is proposed as a useful tool to enhance contents of anthocyanins and flavonols as well as free radical-scavenging activity of black currants. The functional black currants obtained here can be interesting for industry, for consumption as fresh fruits and for production of juice and jam. © 2015 Society of Chemical Industry.

The effect of the postharvest treatment of methyl jasmonate enantiomers in conjunction with ethanol on bioformation of resveratrol and quercetin glycosides in grapes was evaluated. The antioxidant activity of treated grape extracts as compared with untreated extracts was also assayed. Exogenous (-)-methyl jasmonate in combination with ethanol induced a significant increase in the levels of resveratrol (from 27 to 39 µg g(-1)), quercetin-3-O-glucoside (from 59 to 136 µg g(-1)), quercetin-3-O-galactoside (from 398 to 807 µg g(-1)) and quercetin-3-O-rutinoside (from 23 to 43 µg g(-1)). (+)-Methyl jasmonate with ethanol also resulted in increase of quercetin-3-O-glucoside and quercetin-3-O-rutinoside. However, no (+)-methyl jasmonate effect was observed for resveratrol and quercetin-3-O-galactoside. Both (-)- and (+)-methyl jasmonate treatments provided with extracts with higher antioxidant activity. From the results found in the present work postharvest treatment with (-)-methyl jasmonate in conjunction with ethanol is proposed as a mean to obtain polyphenol-enriched grape extracts with improved antioxidant properties. The procedure here developed is proposed as a mean to obtain functional grapes. Extracts obtained from grapes treated with (-)-methyl jasmonate with ethanol can be particularly useful for industry due to their high antioxidant capacity.
