BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of team-, case-, lecture-, and evidence-based learning (TCLEBL) methods in cultivating students' clinical and research abilities, as compared to traditional lecture-based learning (LBL) approaches. METHODS: Forty-one medical postgraduates were divided into two groups, a TCLEBL group and an LBL group. Teaching effectiveness was evaluated through student- and teacher-feedback questionnaires, scores from theoretical examinations and written literature reviews, and student learning burdens. RESULTS: Compared to the LBL approach, both teachers and students were more satisfied with the TCLEBL model (p < 0.001 for both teachers and students). The TCLEBL group performed significantly higher on the theory test compared to the LBL group (p = 0.009). There were significant differences between the LBL and TCLEBL groups, respectively, in terms of literature review and citations (12.683 ± 2.207 vs. 16.302 ± 1.095, p < 0.001), argument and perspective (12.55 ± 1.572 vs. 16.333 ± 1.354, p < 0.001), comprehensiveness of content (13.3 ± 2.268 vs. 16.683 ± 1.344, p < 0.001), and scientific rigor and accuracy (10.317 ± 1.167 vs. 12.746 ± 0.706, p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in the total extracurricular time expended between the two groups (323.75 ± 30.987 min vs. 322.619 ± 24.679 min, respectively for LBL vs. TCLEBL groups, p = 0.898). CONCLUSIONS: TCLEBL is an effective teaching method that cultivates students' clinical and research abilities.

BACKGROUND: Mass screening and treatment (MSAT) for malaria elimination lacks an ideal diagnostic tool to allow sensitive and affordable test of the target population in the field. This study evaluated whether Capture and Ligation Probe-PCR (CLIP-PCR) could be used in a field MSAT in Laiza City, Myanmar. METHODS: On day 0, two dried blood spots were collected from each participant. On day 1, all samples were screened for Plasmodium in a 20 m2 laboratory with workbench, a biosafety cabinet, a refrigerator, a benchtop shaking incubator and a qPCR machine, by four technicians using CLIP-PCR with sample pooling, at a health clinic of the Chinese bordering town of Nabang. On day 2, all positives were followed up and treated. RESULTS: Of 15,038 persons (65% of the total population) screened, 204 (1.36%) were CLIP-PCR positives. Among them, 188, 14, and 2 were infected with Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium falciparum, and P. vivax/P. falciparum mix, respectively. The testing capacity was 538 persons/day, with a cost of US$0.92 /person. The proportion of submicroscopic infection was 64.7%. All positive individuals received treatment within 72 h after blood collection. CONCLUSION: Using CLIP-PCR in MSAT in low transmission settings can support the malaria elimination efforts in the China-Myanmar border region.

BACKGROUND: To describe the risk factors and clinical characteristics of macular epiretinal membrane (MEM) disease in patients up to the age of 40 years and to evaluate the therapeutic effect of IVTA on MEM. METHODS: Clinical records were reviewed and the etiology of each case and the age distribution data were collected in this retrospective, cohort study. The clinical characteristics of MEM and the factors affecting VA were analyzed. Additionally, we contrasted the effects of MEM peeling with and without intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide on visual acuity (VA) and central foveal thickness (CFT). RESULTS: In young patients, the incidence of partial posterior vitreous detachment (P-PVD) was considerably higher in IMEM than SMEM (P = 0.007). Furthermore, patients with stage 3 MEM had lower BCVA values than patients with stage 4 MEM (P < 0.001). Patients who live in urban had lower BCVA values than patients in rural (P < 0.001). Patients with IS/OS integrity had lower BCVA values than patients without IS/OS integrity (P < 0.001). The BCVA values in patients with IMEM were significantly lower than those of patients with SMEM (P < 0.001). BCVA was associated most commonly with etiology (P = 0.001), followed by region (P = 0.002). All patients had a decrease in logMAR Vas and CFT, but the combination of intraoperative IVTA resulted in a more significant decrease in logMAR Vas (P = 0.007) and CFT (P = 0.046). CONCLUSION: In young patients, the incidence of P-PVD was significantly higher in IMEM cases than in SMEM cases. The region, MEM stage, IS/OS integrity, and etiology influenced VA. Etiology was associated most commonly with BCVA. In individuals under 40, the combination of intraoperative IVTA resulted in a more significant decrease in logMAR Vas and CFT.

Eleven compounds were isolated from the 95% ethanol extract of the stems of Dendrobium officinale after water extraction by various modern chromatographic techniques, such as silica gel column chromatography(CC), octadecyl-silica(ODS) CC, Sephadex LH-20 CC, preparative thin layer chromatography(PTLC) and preparative high performance liquid chromatography(PHPLC). According to spectroscopic analyses(MS, 1D-NMR, 2D-NMR) combined with optical rotation data and calculated electronic circular dichroism(ECD), their structures were identified as dendrocandin Y(1), 4,4'-dihydroxybibenzyl(2), 3-hydroxy-4',5-dimethoxybibenzyl(3), 3,3'-dihydroxy-5-methoxybibenzyl(4), 3-hydroxy-3',4',5-trimethoxybibenzyl(5), crepidatin(6), alternariol(7), 4-hydroxy-3-methoxypropiophenone(8), 3-hydroxy-4,5-dimethoxypropiophenone(9), auriculatum A(10) and hyperalcohol(11). Among them, compound 1 was a new bibenzyl derivative; compounds 2 and 7-11 have not been previously reported from Dendrobium plants; compound 6 was reported from D.officinale for the first time. Compounds 3-6 exhibited potent antioxidant activity with IC_(50) values of 3.11-9.05 µmol·L~(-1) in ABTS radical scavenging assay. Compound 4 showed significant inhibitory effect on α-glucosidase, with IC_(50) value of 17.42 µmol·L~(-1), indicating that it boasted hypoglycemic activity.

Eight heterocyclic compounds and twelve phenolic glycosides were separated from the water extract of Dendrobium officinale flowers through chromatographic techniques, such as Diaion HP-20 macroporous adsorption resin column chromatography(CC), silica gel CC, ODS CC, Sephadex LH-20 CC, and preparative high performance liquid chromatography(PHPLC). According to the spectroscopic analyses(MS, ~1H-NMR, and ~(13)C-NMR) and optical rotation data, the compounds were identified as dendrofurfural A(1), 2'-deoxyadenosine(2), 4-[2-formyl-5-(hydroxymethyl)-1H-pyrrol-1-yl] butanoic acid(3), 4-[2-formyl-5-(methoxymethyl)-1H-pyrrol-1-yl] butanoic acid(4), 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-5-(methoxymethyl)-1H-pyrrole-2-carbaldehyde(5), 5-(methoxymethyl)-1H-pyrrole-2-carbaldehyde(6), methyl 5-(hydroxymethyl)-furan-2-carboxylate(7),(S)-5-hydroxymethyl-5H-furan-2-one(8), 2-methoxyphenyl-1-O-ß-D-glucopyranoside(9), arbutin(10), isotachioside(11), 2,6-dimethoxy-4-hydroxyphenol-1-O-ß-D-glucopyranoside(12), orcinol glucoside(13), tachioside(14), gastrodin(15), 4-O-ß-D-glucopyranosylvanillyl alcohol(16), 2,6-dimethoxy-4-hydroxymethylphenol-1-O-ß-D-glucopyranoside(17), icariside D_2(18), 4-formylphenyl-ß-D-glucopyranoside(19), and vanillin-4-O-ß-D-glucopyranoside(20). Among them, compound 1 is a new furfural benzyl alcohol condensate, with the skeleton first found in Dendrobium. Compounds 2-9, 11, 13, and 19 are reported from Dendrobium for the first time, and compounds 14 and 18 are reported for the first time from D. officinale. Compounds 11 and 14 showed moderate DPPH radical scavenging capacity, and compounds 11-14 demonstrated potent ABTS radical scavenging capacity, possessing antioxidant activity.

BACKGROUND: Intravitreal injection of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has become first line therapy for diabetic macular edema. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of intravitreal injection of Ranibizumab (IVR) as pre-treatment for pars plana vitrectomy in proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) patients with vitreous hemorrhage. METHODS: This pilot randomized controlled trial included 48 eyes with vitreous hemorrhage resulting from active PDR. Eyes were treated with IVR 1 or 3 days before vitrectomy or a sham subconjunctival injection 3 days before surgery. The occurrence of new tractional retinal detachment (TRD), total operation time, and intraoperative findings were compared. The concentrations of VEGF and connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) in aqueous humor and plasma collected at the time of IVR and vitrectomy were determined by ELISA. RESULTS: None of the patients who received IVR experienced new TRD. Ranibizumab injection improved intraoperative outcomes. The mean concentrations of VEGF in aqueous humor were significantly lower after than before IVR in patients who received IVR 1 and 3 days before surgery (P < 0.001 each). The CTGF/log10 (VEGF) ratio was significantly higher after than before IVR in patients who received IVR 3 days before vitrectomy (P = 0.046). CONCLUSION: Preoperative IVR is an effective and safe strategy for the surgical treatment of severe PDR combined with vitreous hemorrhage. IVR 1 and 3 days before surgery can significantly reduce VEGF content in aqueous humor and effectively improve intraoperative conditions without causing TRD. Alsophila spinulosa, as a rare tree fern with potential medicinal value, has attracted extensive attention. Herein, the physicochemical properties, antioxidant and anti-aging activities of polysaccharide from A. spinulosa leaf (ALP) were investigated. ALP was composed of galactose, arabinose, glucose, rhamnose, galacturonic acid, mannose, and fucose. (1→), (1→6), and (1→2) bond types were the primary glycosidic bond in ALP. Surprisingly, ALP displayed the wonderful activity of antioxidant and anti-aging, including excellent scavenging ability against DPPH and ABTS radicals in vitro; prolonging the life span, improving activity of antioxidative enzymes (SOD and CAT), and decreasing the level of ROS, MDA in Caenorhabditis elegans. Meanwhile, ALP promoted DAF-16 to move into the nuclear. Overall, our results illustrated that ALP could be further developed as a functional food ingredient.

Pontine warning syndrome (PWS) occurs rarely and is characterized by recurrent, stereotyped episodes of motor or sensory dysfunction, dysarthria, or ophthalmoplegia leading to pontine infarction. Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a distinct neurological sensorimotor disorder. Pontine infarction is a rare but possible cause of RLS. Here, we report the case of a 58-year-old woman who experienced unilateral RLS in concomitance with stereotyped episodes of left-sided weakness and dysarthria, and developed an acute paramedian pontine infarction eventually. To the best of our knowledge, no other cases of PWS coinciding with RLS in the progression of pontine infarction have been reported in the literature. Furthermore, we discussed the potential mechanisms of PWS and RLS secondary to pontine infarction, which may be helpful for managing such patients.

Skyrin and rugulosin A are bioactive bisanthraquinones found in many fungi, with the former suggested as a precursor of hypericin (a diversely bioactive phytochemical) and the latter characterized by its distinct cage-like structure. However, their biosynthetic pathways remain mysterious, although they have been characterized for over six decades. Here, we present the rug gene cluster that governs simultaneously the biosynthesis of skyrin and rugulosin A in Talaromyces sp. YE3016, a fungal endophyte residing in Aconitum carmichaeli. A combination of genome sequencing, gene inactivation, heterologous expression, and biotransformation tests allowed the identification of the gene function, biosynthetic precursor, and enzymatic sets involved in their molecular architecture constructions. In particular, skyrin was demonstrated to form from the 5,5'-dimerization of emodin radicals catalyzed by RugG, a cytochrome P450 monooxygenase evidenced to be potentially applicable for the (chemo)enzymatic synthesis of dimeric polyphenols. The fungal aldo-keto reductase RugH was shown to be capable of hijacking the closest skyrin precursor (CSP) immediately after the emodin radical coupling, catalyzing the ketone reduction of CSP to inactivate its tautomerization into skyrin and thus allowing for the spontaneous intramolecular Michael addition to cyclize the ketone-reduced form of CSP into rugulosin A, a representative of diverse cage-structured bisanthraquinones. Collectively, the work updates our understanding of bisanthraquinone biosynthesis and paves the way for synthetic biology accesses to skyrin, rugulosin A, and their siblings.

BACKGROUND: Eliminating malaria and preventing re-establishment of malaria transmission in border areas requires universal coverage of malaria surveillance and a rapid response to any threats (i.e. malaria cues) of re-establishing transmission. MAIN TEXT: Strategy 1: Intensive interventions within 2.5 km-wide perimeter along the border to prevent border-spill malaria. The area within 2.5 km along the international border is the travel radius of anopheline mosquitoes. Comprehensive interventions should include: (1) proactive and passive case detection, (2) intensive vector surveillance, (3) evidence-based vector control, and (4) evidence-based preventative treatment with anti-malarial drugs. Strategy 2: Community-based malaria detection and screening of migrants and travellers in frontier townships. Un-permitted travellers cross borders frequently and present in frontier townships. Maintenance of intensified malaria surveillance should include: (1) passive malaria detection in the township hospitals, (2) seek assistance from villager leaders and health workers to monitor cross border travellers, and refer febrile patients to the township hospitals and (3) the county's Centre for Disease Control and Prevention maintain regular proactive case detection. Strategy 3: Universal coverage of malaria surveillance to detect malaria cues. Passive detection should be consolidated into the normal health service. Health services personnel should remain vigilant to ensure universal coverage of malaria detection and react promptly to any malaria cues. Strategy + 1: Strong collaborative support with neighbouring countries. Based on the agreement between the two countries, integrated control strategies should be carried out to reduce malaria burden for both countries. There should be a clear focus on the border areas between neighbouring countries. CONCLUSION: The 3 + 1 strategy is an experience summary of border malaria control and elimination, and then contributed to malaria elimination in Yunnan's border areas, China. Nevertheless, Yunnan still has remaining challenges of re-establishment of malaria transmission in the border areas, and the 3 + 1 strategy should still be carried out.

BACKGROUND: Cross-border malaria in Laiza City of Myanmar seriously affected Yingjiang County of China and compromised reaching the goal of malaria elimination by 2020. Since 2017, a pilot project on 3 + 1 strategy of joint cross-border malaria prevention and control was carried out for building a malaria buffer in these border areas. Here, 3 were the three preventive lines in China where different focalized approaches of malaria elimination were applied and + 1 was a defined border area in Myanmar where the integrated measures of malaria control were adopted. METHODS: A 5-year retrospective analysis (2015 to 2019) was conducted that included case detection, parasite prevalence and vector surveillance. Descriptive statistics was used and the incidence or rates were compared. The annual parasite incidence and the parasite prevalence rate in + 1 area of Myanmar, the annual importation rate in Yingjiang County of China and the density of An. minimus were statistically significant indictors to assess the effectiveness of the 3 + 1 strategy. RESULTS: In + 1 area of Myanmar from 2015 to 2019, the averaged annual parasite incidence was (59.11 ± 40.73)/1000 and Plasmodium vivax accounted for 96.27% of the total confirmed cases. After the pilot project, the annual parasite incidence dropped 89% from 104.77/1000 in 2016 to 12.18/1000 in 2019, the microscopic parasite prevalence rate dropped 100% from 0.34% in 2017 to zero in 2019 and the averaged density of An. Minimus per trap-night dropped 93% from 1.92 in June to 0.13 in September. The submicroscopic parasite prevalence rate increased from 1.15% in 2017 to 1.66% in 2019 without significant difference between the two surveys (P = 0.084). In Yingjiang County of China, neither indigenous nor introduced case was reported and 100% cases were imported from Myanmar since 2017. The averaged annual importation rate from 2015 to 2019 was (0.47 ± 0.15)/1000. After the pilot project, the annual importation rate dropped from 0.59/1000 in 2016 to 0.28/1000 in 2019 with an overall reduction of 53% in the whole county. The reduction was 67% (57.63/1000 to 18.01/1000) in the first preventive line, 52% (0.20/1000 to 0.10/1000) in the second preventive line and 36% (0.32/1000 to 0.22/1000) in the third preventive line. The averaged density of An. Minimus per trap-night in the first preventive line dropped 94% from 2.55 in June to 0.14 in September, without significant difference from that of + 1 area of Myanmar (Z value = - 1.18, P value = 0.24). CONCLUSION: The pilot project on 3 + 1 strategy has been significantly effective in the study areas and a buffer zone of border malaria was successfully established between Laiza City of Myanmar and Yingjiang County of China.

The core problem of Chinese resident doctor training is that medical educators present content in an attractive teaching mode to make students more motivated to learn and improve their clinical thinking ability, humanistic care, and practical ability. The traditional classroom mode of teaching cannot meet the needs of modern medical education. The purpose of this study is to explore the benefits and challenges of the flipped classroom (FC) combined with case- and team-based learning (FC-CTBL) for residency training. In this study, 60 junior surgical residents of Xiangya Medical College were enrolled. "Diabetic foot" was selected as the content of this study. Residents were divided into an FC-CTBL group and an FC group. FC-CTBL and FC were compared on the basis of residents' feedback questionnaires, residents' learning burden, test scores from a pre-quiz, and objective structured clinical examinations (OSCE). Residents were more satisfied with the FC-CTBL model compared with FC. In the FC-CTBL group, more participants said that the course improved their teamwork skills, analytical skills and their confidence in tackling unfamiliar problems. Residents in the FC-CTBL group also spent significantly less time preparing for class and performed better in the OSCE than those in the FC group. FC-CTBL stimulates residents' learning motivation, decreases their workload, improves their performance in the OSCE and may help to enhance clinical thinking and teamwork skills. The FC-CTBL approach is a good option for residency training.

Chronic unpredicted mild stress(CUMS) combined with isolated feeding was used to induce depressed rat model. The anti-depressant effects of Zhizichi Decoction(ZZCD) and its solid fermented product(ZZC) were analyzed by behavioral test and comparison of pathological tissues of hippocampus and liver, metabolic characteristics of intestinal flora, and relative abundance of species. The results showed that ZZC could increase sucrose preference, shorten the immobility time in the forced swim test and tail suspension test(P<0.05), and repair damaged hippocampus and liver tissues, and the effect was superior to that of ZZCD. The results of Biolog ECO plates showed that the average well color development(AWCD) of intestinal flora in the model group significantly decreased and the metabolic levels of sugar and amino acids were reduced, while the AWCD of the treatment groups increased. The metabolic levels of the two carbon sources were improved in the ZZC group, while only sugar metabolic level was elevated in the ZZCD group. Metagenomic analysis of intestinal flora showed that the ratio of Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes was 3.87 in the control group, 21.77 in the model group, 5.91 in the ZZC group, and 18.48 in the ZZCD group. Lactobacillus increased by 3.28 times, and Prevotella and Bacteroidetes decreased by 75.59% and 76.39%, respectively in the model group as compared with that in the control group. Lactobacillus decreased by 31.13%, and Prevotella and Bacteroidetes increased by more than three times in the ZZC group as compared with that in the model group, while the corresponding changes in the ZZCD group were not significant. ZZC could improve depression-like beha-viors by regulating the structure of intestinal flora and metabolic functions and repairing damaged hippocampus and liver tissues in depressed rats, showing an anti-depressant effect superior to that of ZZCD. This study is expected to provide a basis for the development of new anti-depressant food products.

BACKGROUND: Some studies have investigated the diagnostic value of intestinal fatty acid binding protein (I-FABP) for acute intestinal ischemia (II), but the results were not always consistent. Therefore, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the diagnostic accuracy of I-FABP for II. METHODS: Publications included in the PubMed and EMBASE before April 7, 2019 were retrieved to identify studies investigating the diagnostic accuracy of I-FABP for II. The Revised Tool for the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies (QUADAS-2) was used to assess the quality of eligible studies. Diagnostic accuracy of I-FABP in all eligible studies was pooled by a bivariate model. Summary receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves (AUC) were constructed to calculate the overall diagnostic accuracy of I-FABP. RESULTS: A total of 10 studies with 1,265 (219 IIs and 1,046 controls) subjects were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The major design weaknesses of included studies were patient selection bias. The overall diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, and AUC of I-FABP were 0.75 (95% CI: 0.68 - 0.82), 0.85 (95% CI: 0.74 - 0.92), and 0.82 (95% CI: 0.79 - 0.86), respectively. In patients with acute abdominal pain, the sensitivity, specificity, and AUC of I-FABP were 0.71 (95% CI: 0.59 - 0.81), 0.89 (95% CI: 0.69 - 0.97) and 0.80 (95% CI: 0.76 - 0.83), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: I-FABP has moderate diagnostic accuracy for II. Due the patient selection bias of available studies, further studies with rigorous design are needed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of I-FABP for II.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been widely used to treat malignant tumors. Our previous studies indicated that connexin (Cx) 32- and Cx26-composed gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) could improve the phototoxicity of PDT. However, the role of heterotypic Cx32/Cx26-formed GJIC in PDT phototoxicity is still unknown. Thus, the present study was aimed to investigate the effect of Cx32/Cx26-formed GJIC on PDT efficacy. METHODS: CCK8 assay was used to detect cell survival after PDT. Western blot assay was utilized to detect Cx32/Cx26 expression. "Parachute" dye-coupling assay was performed to measure the function of GJ channels. The intracellular Ca2+ concentrations were determined using flow cytometer. ELISA assay was performed to detect the intracellular levels of PGE2 and cAMP. RESULTS: The present study demonstrates there is a Cx32/Cx26-formed GJIC-dependent reduction of phototoxicity when cells were exposure to low concentration of Photofrin. Such a protective action is missing at low cell density due to the lack of GJ coupling. Under high-cell density condition, where there is opportunity for the cells to contact each other and form GJ, suppressing Cx32/Cx26-formed GJIC by either inhibiting the expression of Cx32/Cx26 or pretreating with GJ channel inhibitor augments PDT phototoxicity after cells were treated with at 2.5 µg/ml Photofrin. The above results suggest that at low Photofrin concentration, the presence of Cx32/Cx26-formed GJIC may decrease the phototoxicity of PDT, leading to the insensitivity of malignant cells to PDT treatment. The GJIC-mediated PDT insensitivity was associated with Ca2+ and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2 ) signaling pathways. CONCLUSION: The present study provides a cautionary note that for tumors expressing Cx32/Cx26, the presence of Cx32/Cx26-composed GJIC may cause the resistance of tumor cells to PDT. Oppositely, treatment strategies designed to downregulate the expression of Cx32/Cx26 or restrain the function of Cx32/Cx26-mediated GJIC may increase the sensitivity of malignant cell to PDT. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to demonstrate the surgical technique and clinical outcome of autologous neurosensory retinal patch transplantation for recurrent large macular hole (MH)-induced retinal detachment after failed surgery with internal limiting membrane (ILM) removal or transplantation. METHODS: We reviewed 5 patients with recurrent MH-induced retinal detachment after failed surgeries with ILM removal or transplantation who underwent vitrectomy combined with autologous neurosensory retinal patch transplantations and were followed up over 6 months. In the autologous neurosensory retinal patch transplantation procedure, a small piece of neurosensory retina was removed and transplanted inside the MH. The anatomic outcomes of MH-induced retinal detachment were evaluated by fundus examinations and optical coherence tomography. The pre-operative and postoperative best-corrected visual acuities (BCVAs) were compared and the MH closure rates were measured as the main outcomes. RESULTS: A total of 5 patients (3 men and 2 women; average age 35.4 ± 18.72 years) were included in our study. Complete MH sealing was achieved in 5 eyes after autologous neurosensory retinal patch transplantations, and no complications were observed. The mean BCVA was 2.38 ± 0.57 (range 1.6-3) before surgery, and 1.46 ± 0.51 (range 1-2) at 6 postoperative months. There was a significant difference in BCVA before versus after the surgery (p < 0.05, paired t test). CONCLUSIONS: Autologous neurosensory retinal patch transplantation is an effective addition to the surgical options for large MH-induced retinal detachment after failed surgery with ILM removal or transplantation.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the benefits and challenges of the flipped classroom combined with team-, case-, lecture- and evidence-based learning (FC-TCLEBL) for ophthalmology teaching for eight-year program students. METHODS: FC-TCLEBL and the traditional lecture-based classroom (LBC) were compared based on student and teacher feedback questionnaires, student learning burden, and scores on standardized tests as well as their effects on the abilities of clinical thinking, scientific research, active-learning, practical application, humanistic care and communication with patients. RESULTS: Both the students and teachers were more satisfied with the FC-TCLEBL model. More students in the FC-TCLEBL group agreed that the course helped them to develop skills in creative thinking, problem solving, and teamwork. Students in the FC-TCLEBL group spent significantly more time preparing for class than those in the LBC group, but the time spent on review was significantly lower in the FC-TCLEBL group. The students from the FC-TCLEBL group performed better in a post-test on diabetic retinopathy (DR) as compared to the LBC group. CONCLUSIONS: FC-TCLEBL teaching model is effective and suitable for ophthalmology teaching.

Download ash and emission dust samples were collected from sintering, coking, ironmaking and steelmaking processes of iron and steel enterprises in Laiwu. Sixteen kinds of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) priority controlled lists were quantitatively analyzed using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS). Laser particle size analyzer was used to obtain the distribution pattern of download ash. It was found that the diameter distribution pattern from four production processes was quite different. The proportion of fine particulate (0-2.5 µm) was the highest (72.62%) in the steelmaking refining process, and was 28.962% in the ironmaking process. Moreover, the particle size in download ash from steelmaking refining is all less than 10 µm and that from the ironmaking process was 52.92%. The medium-sized particles (10-100 µm) were dominant in sinter and coking download ashes. The total PAHs (∑16PAHs) mass concentration ranged from 0.49 ± 0.06 to 69.63 ± 5.57 µg·g-1 in download ash samples, and varied from 2.815 ± 0.253 to 19.429 ± 2.545 µg·m-3 in emission dust samples. The ∑16PAHs values were both largest in download ash and dust emission from the coking process (69.63 ± 5.57 µg·g-1 and 19.429 ± 2.545 µg·m-3, respectively). The most abundant individual PAHs were benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, phenanthrene, benzo[a]anthracene in ash samples, and benzo[a]anthracene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, benzo[b]fluoranthene and indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene in emission dust samples. Dominant compounds were high-molecular weight (four- to six-ring) PAHs in both ash and dust samples. The concentration order of individual compounds in PM10 and PM2.5 in ambient air around the steel plant was completely consistent with each other, and the concentration of ∑16PAHs was the highest in the steel plant and lowest in Daqin village because of upwind of the steel plant. The concentrations of benzo[b]fluoranthene and fluoranthene in ambient air were comparatively high, and were in accordance with the higher concentration of the two monomers in the download ash samples, which suggested that the effect of the emission flue gas from the steel plant on ambient air was necessary to concern.

Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is an important biological hormone in many abiotic stress responses and developmental processes. In this study, the protective roles of melatonin were investigated by measuring the antioxidant defense system and photosynthetic characteristics in maize under salt stress. The results indicated that NaCl treatment led to the decrease in plant growth, chlorophyll contents and photochemical activity of photosystem II (PSII). However, the levels of reactive oxygen species increased significantly under salt stress. Meanwhile, we found that application of exogenous melatonin alleviated reactive oxygen species burst and protected the photosynthetic activity in maize seedlings under salt stress through the activation of antioxidant enzymes. In addition, 100 µM melatonin-treated plants showed high photosynthetic efficiency and salinity. Immunoblotting analysis of PSII proteins showed that melatonin application alleviated the decline of 34 kDa PSII reaction center protein (D1) and the increase of PSII subunit S protein. Taken together, our study promotes more comprehensive understanding in the protective effects of exogenous melatonin in maize under salt stress, and it may be involved in activation of antioxidant enzymes and regulation of PSII proteins.

In this paper, we design a tunable strength multiband absorber consisting of a graphene metamaterial structure and a thick dielectric interlayer deposited on a metal ground plane. We investigate the tunable conductivity properties of the graphene metamaterial and demonstrate multiband absorbers with three absorption bands using a polyimide interlayer in the 0-2.25 THz range by numerical simulation. The results show that the mix absorptivity reached 99.8% at 1.99 THz, and the absorptive strength can be tuned with the modulation depth up to 84.2%. We present a theoretical interpretation based on a standing wave field, which shows that the field energy is localized inside the thicker spacer and then dissipated, effectively trapping the light in the metamaterial absorbers with negligible near-field interactions. The standing wave field theory developed here explains all the features of the multiband metamaterial absorbers and provides a profound understanding of the underlying physics.
