The electrochemical behavior of three types of bisphenol A polyoxyethylene ether sodium sulfate (BPA) is investigated through cyclic voltammetry striping tests. The results indicate that BPA-25 exhibited the most significant inhibition of Cu deposition. The nanotwinned Cu (nt-Cu) films are prepared by direct current electrodeposition in an acidic Cu sulfate bath containing a combination of conventional bath additives. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results revealed that nt-Cu consisted of microcolumnar grains with high-density nanoscale coherent twin boundaries oriented parallel to the growth surface. The interaction between BPA-25 and the poly2-sulfur-2-propane sodium sulfonate (SPS) was further analyzed through galvanostatic measurements (GMs) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The results demonstrate that BPA-25 and SPS underwent competitive adsorption on the cathode surface, leading to the formation of nt-Cu. This growth mechanism provides a new perspective for the preparation of nt-Cu by using direct current electrodeposition.

BACKGROUND: Due to the global increase in aging populations and changes in modern lifestyles, the prevalence of neurodegenerative diseases, cerebrovascular disorders, neuropsychiatrcic conditions, and related ailments is rising, placing an increasing burden on the global public health system. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All studies on tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) and its derivatives were obtained from reputable sources such as PubMed, Elsevier, Library Genesis, and Google Scholar. Comprehensive data on TMP and its derivatives was meticulously compiled. RESULTS: This comprehensive analysis explains the neuroprotective effects demonstrated by TMP and its derivatives in diseases of the central nervous system. These compounds exert their influence on various targets and signaling pathways, playing crucial roles in the development of various central nervous system diseases. Their multifaceted mechanisms include inhibiting oxidative damage, inflammation, cell apoptosis, calcium overload, glutamate excitotoxicity, and acetylcholinesterase activity. CONCLUSION: This review provides a brief summary of the most recent advancements in research on TMP and its derivatives in the context of central nervous system diseases. It involves synthesizing analogs of TMP and evaluating their effectiveness in models of central nervous system diseases. The ultimate goal is to facilitate the practical application of TMP and its derivatives in the future treatment of central nervous system diseases.

5,10,15,20-Tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)-21H,23H-porphine (TPAPP) possesses good light-harvesting ability and photoelectrochemical (PEC) cathode response signal; however, the disadvantages of easy stacking and weak hydrophilicity limit its application as a signal probe in PEC biosensors. Based on these, we prepared a Fe3+ and Cu2+ co-coordinating photoactive material (TPAPP-Fe/Cu) with horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-like activity. The metal ions in the porphyrin center not only enabled the directional flow of photogenerated electrons between electron-rich porphyrin and positive metal ions within inner-/intermolecular layers but also accelerated electron transfer through a synergistic redox reaction of Fe(III)/Fe(II) and Cu(II)/Cu(I) as well as rapid generation of superoxide anion radicals (O2-â¢) by mimicking catalytically produced and dissolved oxygen, thereby providing the desired cathode photoactive material with extremely high photoelectric conversion efficiency. Accordingly, by combining with toehold-mediated strand displacement (TSD)-induced single cycle and polymerization and isomerization cyclic amplification (PICA), an ultrasensitive PEC biosensor was constructed for the detection of colon cancer-related miRNA-182-5p. The ultratrace target could be converted to abundant output DNA by TSD possessing the desirable amplifying ability to trigger PICA for forming long ssDNA with repetitive sequences, thus decorating substantial TPAPP-Fe/Cu-labeled DNA signal probes for producing high PEC photocurrent. Meanwhile, the Mn(III) meso-tetraphenylporphine chloride (MnPP) was embedded in dsDNA to further exhibit a sensitization effect toward TPAPP-Fe/Cu and an acceleration effect analogous to that of metal ions in the porphyrin center above. As a result, the proposed biosensor displayed a detection limit as low as 0.2 fM, facilitating the development of high-performance biosensors and showing great potential in early clinical diagnosis.

Our previous study found that water activity (aw)- and matrix-dependent bacterial resistance wasdeveloped in Salmonella Typhimurium during antimicrobial-assisted heat treatment in low moisture foods (LMFs) matrices. To better understand the molecular mechanism behind the observed bacterial resistance, gene expression analysis was conducted on S. Typhimurium adapted to different conditions with or without the trans-cinnamaldehyde (CA)-assisted heat treatment via quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Expression profiles of nine stress-related genes were analyzed. The upregulation of rpoH and dnaK and downregulation of ompC were observed during bacterial adaptation in LMF matrices and the combined heat treatment, which likely contributed to the bacterial resistance during the combined treatment. Their expression profiles were partially consistent with the previously-observed effect of aw or matrix on bacterial resistance. The upregulation of rpoE, otsB, proV, and fadA was also observed during adaptation in LMF matrices and might contribute to desiccation resistance, but likely did not contribute to bacterial resistance during the combined heat treatment. The observed upregulation of fabA and downregulation of ibpA could not be directly linked to bacterial resistance to either desiccation or the combined heat treatment. The results may assist the development of more efficient processing methods against S. Typhimurium in LMFs.

Increased thermal resistance of Salmonella at low water activity (aw) is a significant food safety concern in low-moisture foods (LMFs). We evaluated whether trans-cinnamaldehyde (CA, 1000 ppm) and eugenol (EG, 1000 ppm), which can accelerate thermal inactivation of Salmonella Typhimurium in water, can show similar effect in bacteria adapted to low aw in different LMF components. Although CA and EG significantly accelerated thermal inactivation (55 °C) of S. Typhimurium in whey protein (WP), corn starch (CS) and peanut oil (PO) at 0.9 aw, such effect was not observed in bacteria adapted to lower aw (0.4). The matrix effect on bacterial thermal resistance was observed at 0.9 aw, which was ranked as WP > PO > CS. The effect of heat treatment with CA or EG on bacterial metabolic activity was also partially dependent on the food matrix. Bacteria adapted to lower aw had lower membrane fluidity and unsaturated to saturated fatty acids ratio, suggesting that bacteria at low aw can change its membrane composition to increase its rigidity, thus increasing resistance against the combined treatments. This study demonstrates the effect of aw and food components on the antimicrobials-assisted heat treatment in LMF and provides an insight into the resistance mechanism.

Medical abortion is a common medical procedure that women choose to terminate an unwanted pregnancy, but it often brings post-abortion complications. Danggui (Angelica sinensis Radix)-Yimucao (Leonuri Herba), as a herbal pair (DY) in clinical prescriptions of traditional Chinese medicine, is often used in the treatment of gynecological diseases and has the traditional functions of tonifying the blood, promoting blood circulation, removing blood stasis and regulating menstruation. In this study, serum lipidomics were adopted to dissect the mechanism of DY in promoting recovery after medical abortion. A total of 152 differential metabolites were screened by lipidomics. All metabolites were imported into MetaboAnalyst for analysis, and finally key metabolic pathways such as glycerophospholipid metabolism, linoleic acid metabolism and pentose and glucuronate interconversions were enriched. Our results indicated that metabolic disorders in abortion mice were alleviated by DY through glycerophospholipid metabolism, while prostaglandin and leukotriene metabolites might be the key targets of DY to promote post-abortion recovery.

Analytic hierarchy process(AHP)-entropy weight method(EWM) and network pharmacology were employed to identify the potential quality markers(Q-markers) of Gei Herba. According to the new concept of Q-markers in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM), the AHP-EWM was applied to quantitatively identify the Q-markers of Gei Herba. The AHP was used for the weight analysis of primary indicators(factor layer), and the EWM for the analysis of literature and experimental data of secondary indicators(control layer). In addition, network pharmacology was employed to build the "component-target-disease-efficacy" network for Gei Herba, and the components showing strong associations with the Qi-replenishing, spleen-invigorating, blood-tonifying, Yin-nourishing, lung-moistening, and phlegm-resolving effects of Gei Herba were screened out. According to the results of AHP-EWM and network pharmacology, four components, i.e., ellagic acid, gallic acid, gemin G, and gemin C, were finally identified as potential Q-markers of Gei Herba. In this study, the AHP-EWM and network pharmacology were employed to screen the Q-markers of Gei Herba, which provided ideas for the quantitative evaluation and identification of Q-markers of TCM.

The potential quality markers(Q-markers) of Polygoni Perfoliati Herba were studied based on analytic hierarchy process(AHP)-entropy weight method(EWM), network pharmacology, and spectrum-effect relationship analysis. The AHP-EWM was used for quantitative identification of the Q-markers. To be specific, AHP was applied for the weight analysis of the validity, testability, and specificity of the first-level indexes, and EWM for the analysis of the second-level indexes supported by literature and experimental data. Based on literature and network pharmacology, the validity analysis was to study the component-target-disease-efficacy network, and select the components with the strongest correlation with the efficacy of clearing heat and removing toxin, diuresis and alleviating edema, and relieving cough. For the testability analysis, the high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) and literature research were used to determine the 10 components in Polygoni Perfoliati Herba, and the fingerprints of Polygoni Perfoliati Herba were established at the same time. The specificity analysis was based on the statistics of the number of plants in which the components existed. Thereby, the 11 compounds: quercetin, oleanolic acid, ellagic acid, gallic acid, kaempferol, rutin, esculetin, quercetin-3-O-glucuronide, ursolic acid, protocatechuic acid, and ferulic acid, were identified as potential Q-markers. The 11 compounds were identified to have high anti-inflammatory activity, indicating that the 11 Q-markers may be the functional material basis. The result in this study is expected to serve as a reference for the quality control of Polygoni Perfoliati Herba.

This study investigated the quality markers(Q-markers) of Euphorbiae Humifusae Herba based on the analytic hierarchy process(AHP)-criteria importance through intercriteria correlation(CRITIC) comprehensive weighting method. The Q-markers evaluation system was constructed based on the AHP-CRITIC comprehensive weighting method with quantitative identification of Q-markers of Euphorbiae Humifusae Herba as the target layer. The index weights of the factor layer and the control layer were integrated based on the weights of three indicators(effectiveness, testability, and specificity) in the factor layer calculated by the AHP method and weights of eight indicators(anti-inflammatory inhibitory rate, coagulation shortening rate, anti-cancer inhibition rate, component degree value, component test batch, component average content, content variation coefficient, and number of medicinal materials retrieved according to components) in the control layer calculated by the CRITIC method. The comprehensive score of the chemical components of Euphorbiae Humifusae Herba was weighted and ranked to identify the Q-markers of Euphorbiae Humifusae Herba. In terms of comprehensive scores, top 10 potential Q-markers of Euphorbiae Humifusae Herba were ranked as cynaroside > quercetin > gallic acid > apigenin > luteolin > apigenin-7-O-glucoside > quercetin-7-O-glucoside > ellagic acid > astragalin > ethyl gallate. This study provides a reference for the quality control of Euphorbiae Humifusae Herba and a methodological reference for the quantitative identification of Q-markers of Chinese medicine.

As a traditional Chinese medicine, Eupatorium lindleyanum DC. has an effect on resolving phlegm, relieving cough, and relieving asthma. In this study, an ultra high performance liquid chromatography with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry method was established for qualitative analysis of Eupatorium lindleyanum. Besides, we developed an ultra high performance liquid chromatography with triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry method in positive and negative multiple reaction monitor modes for the quantitative analysis of 27 chemical constituents from 19 different batches of Eupatorium lindleyanum. The methodology validated linearity, intraday and interday precision, stability, repeatability, and recovery. The results showed that there were some differences in different batches of Eupatorium lindleyanum, which might be attributed to the influence of different growth environments and climatic conditions on the accumulation of compounds. The variable importance of projection value of orthogonal partial least square discriminant analysis and anti-inflammatory activity test showed that eupalinolide A, B, C, and K have high content and strong activity, which could provide a reference for the follow-up study of the quality markers of Eupatorium lindleyanum. Collectively, we developed a rapid and efficient method for the qualitative analysis and simultaneous quantification of Eupatorium lindleyanum, which was beneficial for the comprehensive utilization and development of resources.

Through the integrated analysis of the results obtained with AHP-EWM and network pharmacological method, 13 compounds including rutin, quercetin, nepetin, cirsiliol, luteolin, hyperoside,isoquercitrin, kaempferol, caffeic acid, eupalinolide K, eupalinolide A, eupalinolide B, and eupalinolide C were comprehensively identified as the potential Q-markers of E. lindleyanum. The results provide a basis for the quality control of E. lindleyanum.

Qixuehe Capsules is a compound Chinese patent medicine developed for treating the disorder of Qi and blood(a common etiology of gynecological disease), which has remarkable effects on smoothing liver and regulating Qi, activating blood circulation, and relieving pain. However, due to its complex prescriptions(15 herbs) and multiple effects, the quality control of Qixuehe Capsules has always been a bottleneck problem limiting its sustainable development. Therefore, this study adopted the traditional Chinese medicine Q-markers quantitative identification system established previously by our research group based on the combination of analytic hierarchy process and entropy weight methods. With the different effects of Qixuehe Capsules as the entry point, the comprehensive scores of chemical ingre-dients in Qixuehe Capsules under the items of effectiveness(smoothing liver and regulating qi, activating blood circulation, and relieving pain), testability and specificity were calculated and integrated, respectively. Subsequently, through the analysis of compatibility relationship of Qixuehe Capsules, 15 active ingredients with high comprehensive scores were found to be the top Q-mar-kers of Qixuehe Capsules, including ferulic acid, quercetin, caffeic acid, kaempferol, rutin, Z-ligustilide, senkyunolide â , vanillic acid, protocatechuic acid, chlorogenic acid, rosmarinic acid, senkyunolide A, gallic acid, tetrahydropalmatine and eugenol. Collectively, this study not only provided scientific evidence for further research on the improvement and standardization of quality standards of Qixuehe Capsules but also provided methodological references for the quantitative identification of Q-markers of multi-effect traditional Chinese medicine formulae.

BACKGROUND: The specific underlying pathogenesis of prolactinoma has not been clarified yet, to the best of our knowledge. p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling including p38α MAPK (MAPK14), p38ß (MAPK11), p38γ (MAPK12) and p38δ (MAPK13) is associated with the development and progression of several types of cancer. METHODS: Immunofluorescence analysis was performed on the prolactin (PRL) and MAPK14 expressions of pituitary gland in C57BL/6 mice and human prolactinoma specimen. In the present study, the role of MAPK14 in prolactinoma was determined using estradiol-induced mice and dopamine D2 receptor knockout (DRD2-/-) mice models in C57BL/6 wild-type (WT), MAPK14-/- and DRD2-/-MAPK14+/- mice. GH3 cells were transfected with different sets of MAPK14 small interfering RNA, which to study MAPK14 and PRL expression in GH3 cells. RESULTS: Immunofluorescence analysis showed that PRL and MAPK14 expression were colocalized and increased in the pituitary gland of mice and human prolactinoma specimen compared with the control specimen. It was shown that PRL and MAPK14 expression was colocalized and increased significantly in the pituitary gland of estradiol-injected prolactinoma mice compared with the control mice. Knockout of MAPK14 significantly inhibited tumor overgrowth, and PRL expression was decreased in estradiol-induced mice. Furthermore, MAPK14 knockout of DRD2-/-MAPK14+/- mice significantly reduced the overgrowth of pituitary gland and PRL production and secretion compared with DRD2-/- mice. MAPK14 knockout using siRNA inhibited PRL production in GH3 cells. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that MAPK14 serves a promoting role in the formation of prolactinoma, and highlights the potential of MAPK14 as a potential therapeutic target in the treatment of prolactinoma.

There is a need to develop food processing technologies with enhanced antimicrobial capacity against foodborne pathogens. While considering the challenges of adequate inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms in different food matrices, the emerging technologies are also expected to be sustainable and have a minimum impact on food quality and nutrients. Synergistic combinations of food processing technologies and food-grade compounds have a great potential to address these needs. During these combined treatments, food processes directly or indirectly interact with added chemicals, intensifying the overall antimicrobial effect. This review provides an overview of the combinations of different thermal or nonthermal processes with a variety of food-grade compounds that show synergistic antimicrobial effect against pathogenic microorganisms in foods and model systems. Further, we summarize the underlying mechanisms for representative combined treatments that are responsible for the enhanced microbial inactivation. Finally, regulatory issues and challenges for further development and technical transfer of these new approaches at the industrial level are also discussed.

Antimicrobial activity of the simultaneous UV-A light and benzoic acid (BA) treatment against stationary phase Escherichia coli O157:H7 was investigated. While 15 mM BA or UV-A light exposure for 30 min alone caused < 1 logarithmic reduction in the bacterial population, > 5 logarithmic reductions were induced by the simultaneous application of UV-A and 15 mM BA in 30 min, demonstrating a synergistic antimicrobial effect. Due to its ability to increase cell membrane permeability, addition of EDTA (1 mM) was able to decrease the required concentration of BA in the simultaneous treatment from 15 to 8 mM. Microbial inactivation was a result of simultaneous membrane damage, intracellular acidification, and intracellular oxidative stress. The simultaneous treatment was effective in the presence of organic load of up to 500 mg/L of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and was able to lower cross-contamination risk during simulated washing of spinach (Spinacia oleracea) without adversely affecting its color.

This study was to investigate the bidirectional estrogen-like effects of genistein on murine experimental autoimmune ovarian disease (AOD). Female BALB/c mice were induced by immunization with a peptide from murine zona pellucida. The changes of estrous cycle, ovarian histomorphology were measured, and the levels of serum sex hormone were analyzed using radioimmunoassay. Proliferative responses of the ovary were also determined by immunohistochemistry. Administration of 25 or 45 mg/kg body weight genistein enhanced ovary development with changes in serum sex hormone levels and proliferative responses. Meanwhile, the proportions of growing and mature follicles increased and the incidence of autoimmune oophoritis decreased, which exhibited normal ovarian morphology in administration of 25 or 45 mg/kg body weight genistein, while a lower dose (5 mg/kg body weight genistein) produced the opposite effect. These findings suggest that genistein exerts bidirectional estrogen-like effects on murine experimental AOD, while a high dose (45 mg/kg body weight) of genistein may suppress AOD.

OBJECTIVE: To study the processing conditions that influenced the contents of gastrodine in dried processing of fresh Gastrodia elata. METHODS: The optimized processing condition were established by using single-factor and orthogonal experimental design, which was guided by the contents of gastrodine. Fresh Gastrodia elata were harvested in the day, cleaned sediment, cooked in atmospheric pressure for 25 min, cut into 0.5 - 1.0 cm thick slices and dried in 105 degrees C. The gastrodine content was measured by HPLC. RESULTS: The gastrodine content was 0.532%, which was higher than that of traditional processing method. CONCLUSION: Dried processing condition can influence the content of gastrodine in Gastrodia elata significantly.

The varied choice of bacterial strain, plant cultivar, and method used to inoculate, retrieve, and enumerate Escherichia coli O157:H7 from live plants could affect comparability among studies evaluating lettuce-enterobacterial interactions. Cultivar, bacterial strain, incubation time, leaf side inoculated, and sample processing method were assessed for their influence in recovering and quantifying E. coli O157:H7 from live Romaine lettuce. Cultivar exerted the strongest effect on E. coli O157:H7 counts, which held up even when cultivar was considered in interactions with other factors. Recovery from the popularly grown green Romaine "Rio Bravo" was higher than from the red variety "Outredgeous." Other modulating variables were incubation time, strain, and leaf side inoculated. Sample processing method was not significant. Incubation for 24 hours post-lettuce inoculation yielded greater counts than 48 hours, but was affected by lettuce cultivar, bacterial strain, and leaf side inoculated. Higher counts obtained for strain EDL933 compared to a lettuce outbreak strain 2705C emphasized the importance of selecting relevant strains for the system being studied. Inoculating the abaxial side of leaves gave higher counts than adaxial surface inoculation, although this factor interacted with strain and incubation period. Our findings highlight the importance of studying interactions between appropriate bacterial strains and plant cultivars for more relevant research results, and of standardizing inoculation and incubation procedures. The strong effect of cultivar exerted on the E. coli O157:H7-lettuce association supports the need to start reporting cultivar information for illness outbreaks to facilitate the identification and study of plant traits that impact food safety risk.IMPORTANCEThe contamination of Romaine lettuce with Escherichia coli O157:H7 has been linked to multiple foodborne disease outbreaks, but variability in the methods used to evaluate E. coli O157:H7 association with live lettuce plants complicates the comparability of different studies. In this study, various experimental variables and sample processing methods for recovering and quantifying E. coli O157:H7 from live Romaine lettuce were assessed. Cultivar was found to exert the strongest influence on E. coli O157:H7 retrieval from lettuce. Other modulating factors were bacterial incubation time on plants, strain, and leaf side inoculated, while sample processing method had no impact. Our findings highlight the importance of selecting relevant cultivars and strains, and of standardizing inoculation and incubation procedures, in these types of assessments. Moreover, results support the need to start reporting cultivars implicated in foodborne illness outbreaks to facilitate the identification and study of plant traits that impact food safety risk.

We report here on dual shape transformations of the same thermo-responsive hybrid hydrogel sheet under irradiation of a laser with two different wavelengths (808 nm and 450 nm). By in situ etching the silver nanoprisms in the sheet to silver nanodiscs by using chloride ions (Cl-), two areas with distinct light extinction properties are integrated in a single sheet. The conversion of photon energy to thermal energy in local areas by the silver nanoprisms or nanodiscs under laser irradiation with an appropriate wavelength heats up the sheet locally and causes a local volumetric shrinkage, and hence a volumetric mismatch in different areas in the sheet. The sheet then transforms in a specific way to accommodate this volumetric mismatch. Different patterns of silver nanoprisms and nanodiscs in the sheet are achieved by controlling the delivery patterns of the etchant Cl-. We demonstrate that by designing the distribution pattern of silver nanoprisms and nanodiscs in the sheet, the same hybrid sheet transforms either to a saddle or to a helical twisted shape, while with another type of distribution pattern, it transforms either to a hoof-like or to a boat-like shape under the irradiation of a laser with a wavelength of either 808 nm or 450 nm. We point out that to program arbitrary curvature of the transformed shape of our sheet, the pattern size of silver nanoprisms and nanodiscs (i.e. actuation area) in the sheet needs to be largely reduced, which however limits the heat generated and hence the shape transformations. Factors that affect the sheet's shape transformations are discussed and solutions are suggested to enhance its performance. The hybrid sheet may find applications in soft robotics, for example, as a robotic finger.

Background: Extraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (ESMC), an uncommon and highly aggressive form of chondrosarcoma, is characterized by its mesenchymal origin and absence of skeletal involvement. Only a few cases of primary ESMC with metastasis to the pancreas have been reported so far. In this study, we present a case of ESMC in the left thigh with a solitary pancreatic metastasis in a 45-year-old woman. Additionally, we provide a thorough overview of ESMC, encompassing its entire clinical progression and radiographic observations. Furthermore, we reviewed all thirteen cases of pancreatic metastasis, including this present case, analyzing patient attributes, clinical management, and prognosis. Case presentation: A 45-year-old woman has had a painless mass in her left thigh for one year. X-ray, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging of the left thigh were performed. Positron emission tomography-CT imaging showed a high accumulation in the left thigh tumor and the pancreatic neck lesion. A diagnosis of extraskeletal chondrosarcoma with pancreatic metastasis was determined based on the radiological examinations. A final diagnosis of ESMC was confirmed by histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations after surgical resection. The patient presented metastasis in the lung, right groin, and tail of the pancreas successively, and mostly received complete surgical excision during a 39-month follow-up with postoperative chemotherapy. Conclusion: We present a highly uncommon case of ESMC spreading to the pancreas and highlight the importance of recognizing the distinctive imaging features of ESMC for diagnosis and prognosis assessment.
