RESUMO

Few studies have been performed on the persistent organic pollutant contamination in soil from the plateau and remote areas, particularly the mid-latitude arid and semi-arid regions of Northwest China. The occurrence, spatial distribution, source, and potential risk of 12 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were investigated in soil collected from five Hexi Corridor cities in Northwest China. All of the PCBs were detected individually in the soil samples. The concentration of Σ12PCBs in the Hexi Corridor ranged from 2.0 to 148.5 ng/g, with an average of 21.3 ng/g. The tetra-CBs and hexa-CBs were the dominant PCB components in the soil. Higher PCB levels were found in the industrial city of Jiuquan, and the fewest PCBs were detected at Jinchang. Source analysis by principal component analysis showed that the dominant sources of PCBs were automobile exhaust, paint additives, insulation materials, and other industrial products. The carcinogenic health risk of PCBs in the Hexi Corridor soil was within acceptable levels, but the exposure risk of PCBs in soil for children was higher than that for adults.

RESUMO

Primary hepatic carcinoma is a common malignant tumor. The classic molecular targeted drug sorafenib is costly and is only effective for some patients. Therefore, it is of great clinical significance to search for new molecular targeted drugs. Eupalinolide B (EB) from Eupatorium lindleyanum DC. is used to treat chronic tracheitis in clinical practice. However, the role of EB in hepatic carcinoma is unknown. In this study, we first measure the effect of EB on tumor growth in a xenograft model and PDX model. The cell proliferation and migration are also detected in human hepatocarcinoma cell lines (SMMC-7721 and HCCLM3). Then, we investigate cell cycle, cell apoptosis, cell necrosis, cell autophagy, and ferroptosis by flow cytometry, western blot analysis and electron microscopy. The results demonstrate that EB exerts anti-proliferative activity in hepatic carcinoma by blocking cell cycle arrest at S phase and inducing ferroptosis mediated by endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, as well as HO-1 activation. When HO-1 is inhibited, EB-induced cell death and ER protein expression are rescued. The migration-related mechanism consists of activation of the ROS-ER-JNK signaling pathway and is not connected to ferroptosis. In summary, we first discover that EB inhibits cell proliferation and migration in hepatic carcinoma, and thus EB is a promising anti-tumor compound that can be used for hepatic carcinoma.

RESUMO

In this paper, an optofluidic phase modulator based on electrowetting is presented. The modulator consists of an inner and outer chamber. Two immiscible liquids are filled into the chambers, and a transparent sheet is fixed between the liquid-liquid interface to obtain a flat interface. By applying different voltages to the modulator, the flat interface moves up and down leading to the change of optical path length. Consequently, the variation of the optical path in the proposed modulator exploits the ability to alter the optical phase. To prove the concept, a prototype of the phase modulator is fabricated in experiment, and the ability of phase modulation is detected. Our proposed modulator performs optical phase shift up to ∼6.68 π driven with 150 V. Widespread applications of such an optofluidic phase modulator is foreseeable.

RESUMO

In this paper, an optofluidic phase modulator based on dielectrowetting is designed and fabricated to adjust the optical phase. Two liquids are filled in the device, and a transparent sheet is employed at the liquid interface to keep the interface flat. When different voltages are applied to the modulator, the flat interface moves up and down, leading to the variation of the optical phase. A theoretical model is constructed to predict the optical phase shift quantitatively, and the phase regulation ability is also tested experimentally. Our modulator realizes continuous adjustment of the optical phase in a certain range by the operation of voltage adjustment. When the voltage is increased to 150 V, the optical phase modulation range of our proposed modulator can reach 9.366 π.

RESUMO

Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common primary malignancy of the liver. The current systemic drugs used to treat hepatocellular carcinoma result in low overall survival time. It has therefore been suggested that new smallmolecule drugs should be developed for treating hepatocellular carcinoma. Eupatorium lindleyanum DC. (EL) has been used to treat numerous diseases, particularly respiratory diseases; however, to the best of our knowledge, studies have not yet fully elucidated the effect of EL on hepatocellular carcinoma. In the present study, the effect of eupalinolide A (EA), one of the extracts of EL, was evaluated on tumor growth in a xenograft model of human hepatocellular carcinoma cells, and on the proliferation and migration of hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines. Cell cycle progression and the type of cell death were then evaluated using the Cell Counting Kit 8 assay, flow cytometry, electron microscopy and western blotting. EA significantly inhibited cell proliferation and migration by arresting the cell cycle at the G1 phase and inducing autophagy in hepatocellular carcinoma cells. EAinduced autophagy was mediated by reactive oxygen species (ROS) and ERK signaling activation. Specific inhibitors of ROS, autophagy and ERK inhibited EAinduced cell death and migration. In conclusion, the present study revealed that EA may inhibit the proliferation and migration of hepatocellular carcinoma cells, highlighting its potential as a promising antitumor compound for treating hepatocellular carcinoma.

RESUMO

Attapulgite is a layered silicate with good friction-reduction and self-repairing properties. In order to further improve its tribological properties, the present work mainly focuses on the preparation of attapulgite/La2O3 nanocomposite and study on its tribological behaviors. The tribological properties of mineral lubricating oil (150SN) containing attapulgite/La2O3 nanocomposite were investigated through an Optimal SRV-IV oscillating friction and wear tester. The rubbing surfaces and generated tribofilms were characterized by SEM, EDS, XPS and nanoindentation. Results indicated that the friction-reducing ability and antiwear property of the oil were both remarkably improved by attapulgite/La2O3 nanocomposite. A tribofilm mainly composed of Fe, Fe3C, FeO, Fe2O3, FeOOH, SiO, SiO2 and organic compound was formed on the rubbing surface under the lubrication of oil with attapulgite/La2O3 nanocomposite. The tribofilm possess excellent self-lubricating ability and mechanical properties, which is responsible for the reduction of friction and wear.
