RESUMO

Endogenous retroviruses (ERV) are indicators of vertebrate evolutionary history and play important roles as homeostatic regulators. ERV long terminal repeat (LTR) elements may act as cis-activating promoters or trans-activating enhancer elements modifying gene transcription distant from LTR insertion sites. We previously documented that endogenous feline leukemia virus (FeLV)-LTR copy number variation in individual cats tracks inversely with susceptibility to virulent FeLV disease. To evaluate FeLV-LTR insertion characteristics, we assessed enFeLV-LTR integration site diversity in 20 cats from three genetically distinct populations using a baited linker-mediated PCR approach. We documented 765 individual integration sites unequally represented among individuals. Only three LTR integration sites were shared among all individuals, while 412 sites were unique to a single individual. When primary fibroblast cultures were challenged with exogenous FeLV, we found significantly increased expression of both exogenous and endogenous FeLV orthologs, supporting previous findings of potential exFeLV-enFeLV interactions; however, viral challenge did not elicit transcriptional changes in genes associated with the vast majority of integration sites. This study assesses FeLV-LTR integration sites in individual animals, providing unique transposome genotypes. Further, we document substantial individual variation in LTR integration site locations, even in a highly inbred population, and provide a framework for understanding potential endogenous retroviral element position influence on host gene transcription.

RESUMO

With excellent energy resolution and ultralow-level radiogenic backgrounds, the high-purity germanium detectors in the Majorana Demonstrator enable searches for several classes of exotic dark matter (DM) models. In this work, we report new experimental limits on keV-scale sterile neutrino DM via the transition magnetic moment from conversion to active neutrinos ν_{s}→ν_{a}. We report new limits on fermionic dark matter absorption (χ+A→ν+A) and sub-GeV DM-nucleus 3→2 scattering (χ+χ+A→ϕ+A), and new exclusion limits for bosonic dark matter (axionlike particles and dark photons). These searches utilize the (1-100)-keV low-energy region of a 37.5-kg y exposure collected by the Demonstrator between May 2016 and November 2019 using a set of ^{76}Ge-enriched detectors whose surface exposure time was carefully controlled, resulting in extremely low levels of cosmogenic activation.

This study characterized adult primary care medical assistant (MA) staffing. National Survey of Healthcare Organizations and Systems (n = 1,252) data were analyzed to examine primary care practice characteristics associated with MA per primary care clinician (PCC) staffing ratios. In 2021, few practices (11.4%) had ratios of 2 or more MAs per PCCs. Compared with system-owned practices, independent (odds ratio [OR] = 1.76, P <0.05) and medical group-owned (OR = 2.09, P <0.05) practices were more likely to have ratios of 2 or more MAs per PCCs, as were practices with organizational cultures oriented to innovation (P <0.05). Most primary care practices do not have adequate MA staffing.

INTRODUCTION: Intermittent fasting enhances neural bioenergetics, is neuroprotective, and elicits antioxidant effects in various animal models. There are conflicting findings on seizure protection, where intermittent fasting regimens often cause severe weight loss resembling starvation which is unsustainable long-term. Therefore, we tested whether a less intensive intermittent fasting regimen such as time-restricted feeding (TRF) may confer seizure protection. METHODS: Male CD1 mice were assigned to either ad libitum-fed control, continuous 8 h TRF, or 8 h TRF with weekend ad libitum food access (2:5 TRF) for one month. Body weight, food intake, and blood glucose levels were measured. Seizure thresholds were determined at various time points using 6-Hz and maximal electroshock seizure threshold (MEST) tests. Protein levels and mRNA expression of genes, enzyme activity related to glucose metabolism, as well as mitochondrial dynamics were assessed in the cortex and hippocampus. Markers of antioxidant defence were evaluated in the plasma, cortex, and liver. RESULTS: Body weight gain was similar in the ad libitum-fed and TRF mouse groups. In both TRF regimens, blood glucose levels did not change between the fed and fasted state and were higher during fasting than in the ad libitum-fed groups. Mice in the TRF group had increased seizure thresholds in the 6-Hz test on day 15 and on day 19 in a second cohort of 2:5 TRF mice, but similar seizure thresholds at other time points compared to ad libitum-fed mice. Continuous TRF did not alter MEST seizure thresholds on day 28. Mice in the TRF group showed increased maximal activity of pyruvate dehydrogenase in the cortex, which was accompanied by increased protein levels of mitochondrial pyruvate carrier 1 in the cortex and hippocampus. There were no other major changes in protein or mRNA levels associated with energy metabolism and mitochondrial dynamics in the brain, nor markers of antioxidant defence in the brain, liver, or plasma. CONCLUSIONS: Both continuous and 2:5 TRF regimens transiently increased seizure thresholds in the 6-Hz model at around 2 weeks, which coincided with stability of blood glucose levels during the fed and fasted periods. Our findings suggest that the lack of prolonged anticonvulsant effects in the acute electrical seizure models employed may be attributed to only modest metabolic and antioxidant adaptations found in the brain and liver. Our findings underscore the potential therapeutic value of TRF in managing seizure-related conditions.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to estimate prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) exposure and infection among Indigenous and tribal populations globally. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: We systematically searched bibliographic databases and grey literature (1/01/2000-16/06/2022). Prevalence estimates were synthesised overall, by World Health Organization region and HCV-risk group. For studies with comparator populations, prevalence ratios were estimated and pooled. RESULTS: Ninety-two studies were included. Globally, among general Indigenous and tribal populations, the median prevalence of HCV antibody (HCV Ab) was 1.3% (interquartile range [IQR]: 0.3-3.8%, I2 = 98.5%) and HCV RNA was 0.4% (IQR: 0-1.3%, I2 = 96.1%). The Western Pacific Region had the highest prevalence (HCV Ab: median: 3.0% [IQR: 0.4-11.9%], HCV RNA: median 5.6% [IQR: 2.0-8.8%]). Prevalence was highest in people who injected drugs (HCV Ab: median: 59.5%, IQR: 51.5-67.6%, I2 = 96.6%; and HCV RNA: median: 29.4%, IQR: 21.8-35.2%, I2 = 97.2%). There was no association between HCV Ab prevalence and Indigenous/tribal status for general populations (prevalence ratio = 0.91; 95% CI: 0.56, 1.49) or key risk groups. CONCLUSIONS: Indigenous and tribal peoples from the Western Pacific Region and recognised at-risk sub-populations had higher HCV prevalence. HCV prevalence showed no association with Indigenous/tribal status. However, this review was limited by heterogeneity and poor quality of constituent studies, varying definitions of Indigenous/tribal status, regional data gaps, and limited studies on chronic infection (HCV RNA). Comprehensive quality evidence on HCV epidemiology in Indigenous and tribal peoples is needed to tailor preventive and treatment interventions so these populations are not left behind in elimination efforts.

RESUMO

A climbing mantella frog (Mantella laevigata) was presented with nodular thickened skin. Histological examination revealed dermal nodules composed of differentiated bone consistent with miliary osteoma cutis, a non-neoplastic condition where bone is abnormally deposited within the skin. This is the first report of idiopathic osteoma cutis in an amphibian.

Nowadays, particularly in countries with high incomes, individual mutations in people affected by genetic epilepsies are identified, and genetic therapies are being developed. In addition, drugs are being screened to directly target specific mutations, and personalised medicine is possible. However, people with epilepsy do not yet benefit from these advances, and many types of epilepsies are medication-resistant, including Dravet syndrome. Thus, in the meantime, alternative and effective treatment options are needed. There is increasing evidence that metabolic deficits contribute to epileptic seizures and that such metabolic impairments may be amenable to treatment, with metabolic treatment options like the ketogenic diet being employed with some success. However, the brain metabolic alterations that occur in ion channel epilepsies are not well-understood, nor how these may differ from epilepsies that are of acquired and unknown origins. Here, we provide an overview of studies investigating metabolic alterations in epilepsies caused by mutations in the SCN1A and KCNA1 genes, which are currently the most studied ion channel epilepsies in animal models. The metabolic changes found in these models are likely to contribute to seizures. A metabolic basis of these ion channel epilepsies is supported by human and/or animal studies that show beneficial effects of the ketogenic diet, which may be mediated by the provision of auxiliary brain fuel in the form of ketone bodies. Other potentially more preferred dietary therapies including medium-chain triglycerides and triheptanoin have also been tested in a limited number of studies, but their efficacies remain to be clearly established. The extent to which brain metabolism is affected in people with Dravet syndrome, KCNA1 epilepsy and the models thereof still requires clarification. This requires more experiments that yield functional insight into metabolism.

We describe a first measurement of the radiation from a ^{178m}Hf sample to search for dark matter. The γ flux from this sample, possessed by Los Alamos National Laboratory nuclear chemistry, was measured with a Ge detector at a distance of 1.2 m due to its high activity. We search for γ's that cannot arise from the radioactive decay of ^{178m}Hf but might arise from the production of a nuclear state due to the inelastic scattering with dark matter. The limits obtained on this γ flux are then translated into constraints on the parameter space of inelastic dark matter. Finally, we describe the potential reach of future studies with ^{178m}Hf.

The Majorana Demonstrator searched for neutrinoless double-ß decay (0νßß) of ^{76}Ge using modular arrays of high-purity Ge detectors operated in vacuum cryostats in a low-background shield. The arrays operated with up to 40.4 kg of detectors (27.2 kg enriched to ∼88% in ^{76}Ge). From these measurements, the Demonstrator has accumulated 64.5 kg yr of enriched active exposure. With a world-leading energy resolution of 2.52 keV FWHM at the 2039 keV Q_{ßß} (0.12%), we set a half-life limit of 0νßß in ^{76}Ge at T_{1/2}>8.3×10^{25} yr (90% C.L.). This provides a range of upper limits on m_{ßß} of (113-269) meV (90% C.L.), depending on the choice of nuclear matrix elements.

The COHERENT Collaboration searched for scalar dark matter particles produced at the Spallation Neutron Source with masses between 1 and 220 MeV/c^{2} using a CsI[Na] scintillation detector sensitive to nuclear recoils above 9 keV_{nr}. No evidence for dark matter is found and we thus place limits on allowed parameter space. With this low-threshold detector, we are sensitive to coherent elastic scattering between dark matter and nuclei. The cross section for this process is orders of magnitude higher than for other processes historically used for accelerator-based direct-detection searches so that our small, 14.6 kg detector significantly improves on past constraints. At peak sensitivity, we reject the flux consistent with the cosmologically observed dark-matter concentration for all coupling constants α_{D}<0.64, assuming a scalar dark-matter particle. We also calculate the sensitivity of future COHERENT detectors to dark-matter signals which will ambitiously test multiple dark-matter spin scenarios.

^{180m}Ta is a rare nuclear isomer whose decay has never been observed. Its remarkably long lifetime surpasses the half-lives of all other known ß and electron capture decays due to the large K-spin differences and small energy differences between the isomeric and lower-energy states. Detecting its decay presents a significant experimental challenge but could shed light on neutrino-induced nucleosynthesis mechanisms, the nature of dark matter, and K-spin violation. For this study, we repurposed the Majorana Demonstrator, an experimental search for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of ^{76}Ge using an array of high-purity germanium detectors, to search for the decay of ^{180m}Ta. More than 17 kg, the largest amount of tantalum metal ever used for such a search, was installed within the ultralow-background detector array. In this Letter, we present results from the first year of Ta data taking and provide an updated limit for the ^{180m}Ta half-life on the different decay channels. With new limits up to 1.5×10^{19} yr, we improved existing limits by 1-2 orders of magnitude which are the most sensitive searches for a single ß and electron capture decay ever achieved. Over all channels, the decay can be excluded for T_{1/2}<0.29×10^{18} yr.

Using an 185-kg NaI[Tl] array, COHERENT has measured the inclusive electron-neutrino charged-current cross section on ^{127}I with pion decay-at-rest neutrinos produced by the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Iodine is one the heaviest targets for which low-energy (≤50 MeV) inelastic neutrino-nucleus processes have been measured, and this is the first measurement of its inclusive cross section. After a five-year detector exposure, COHERENT reports a flux-averaged cross section for electron neutrinos of 9.2_{-1.8}^{+2.1}×10^{-40} cm^{2}. This corresponds to a value that is ∼41% lower than predicted using the MARLEY event generator with a measured Gamow-Teller strength distribution. In addition, the observed visible spectrum from charged-current scattering on ^{127}I has been measured between 10 and 55 MeV, and the exclusive zero-neutron and one-or-more-neutron emission cross sections are measured to be 5.2_{-3.1}^{+3.4}×10^{-40} and 2.2_{-0.5}^{+0.4}×10^{-40} cm^{2}, respectively.

Ketogenic diets and medium-chain triglycerides are gaining attention as treatment of neurological disorders. Their major metabolites, ß-hydroxybutyrate (ßHB) and the medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) octanoic acid (C8) and decanoic acid (C10), are auxiliary brain fuels. To which extent these fuels compete for metabolism in different brain cell types is unknown. Here, we used acutely isolated mouse cerebral cortical slices to (1) compare metabolism of 200 µM [U-13C]C8, [U-13C]C10 and [U-13C]ßHB and (2) assess potential competition between metabolism of ßHB and MCFAs by quantifying metabolite 13C enrichment using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. The 13C enrichment in most metabolites was similar with [U-13C]C8 and [U-13C]C10 as substrates, but several fold lower with [U-13C]ßHB. The 13C enrichment in glutamate was in a similar range for all three substrates, whereas the 13C enrichments in citrate and glutamine were markedly higher with both [U-13C]C8 and [U-13C]C10 compared with [U-13C]ßHB. As citrate and glutamine are indicators of astrocytic metabolism, the results indicate active MCFA metabolism in astrocytes, while ßHB is metabolized in a different cellular compartment. In competition experiments, 12C-ßHB altered 13C incorporation from [U-13C]C8 and [U-13C]C10 in only a few instances, while 12C-C8 and 12C-C10 only further decreased the low [U-13C]ßHB-derived 13C incorporation into citrate and glutamine, signifying little competition for oxidative metabolism between ßHB and the MCFAs. Overall, the data demonstrate that ßHB and MCFAs are supplementary fuels in different cellular compartments in the brain without notable competition. Thus, the use of medium-chain triglycerides in ketogenic diets is likely to be beneficial in conditions with carbon and energy shortages in both astrocytes and neurons, such as GLUT1 deficiency.

Stretching or compressing hydrogels creates anisotropic environments that lead to motionally averaged alignment of embedded guest quadrupolar nuclear spins such as 23Na+. These distorted hydrogels can elicit a residual quadrupolar coupling that gives an oscillation in the trajectories of single quantum coherences (SQCs) as a function of the evolution time during a spin-echo experiment. We present solutions to equations of motion derived with a Liouvillian superoperator approach, which encompass the coherent quadrupolar interaction in conjunction with relaxation, to give a full analytical description of the evolution trajectories of rank-1 (T^1±1), rank-2 (T^2±1), and rank-3 (T^3±1) SQCs. We performed simultaneous numerical fitting of the experimental 23Na nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and rank-2 (T^2±1) and rank-3 (T^3±1) SQC evolution trajectories measured in double and triple quantum filtered experiments, respectively. We estimated values of the quadrupolar coupling constant CQ, rotational correlation time τC, and 3 × 3 Saupe order matrix. We performed simultaneous fitting of the analytical expressions to the experimental data to estimate values of the quadrupolar coupling frequency ωQ/2π, residual quadrupolar coupling ωQ/2π, and corresponding spherical order parameter S0*, which showed a linear dependence on the extent of uniform hydrogel stretching and compression. The analytical expressions were completely concordant with the numerical approach. The insights gained here can be extended to more complicated (biological) systems such as 23Na+ bound to proteins or located inside and outside living cells in high-field NMR experiments and, by extension, to the anisotropic environments found in vivo with 23Na magnetic resonance imaging.

Dysphagia is a serious cause of morbidity and mortality in stroke survivors. Electrical stimulation is often included as part of the treatment plan for dysphagia and can be applied at a sensory or motor level intensity. However, evidence to support these different modes of stimulation is lacking. This study compared the effectiveness of sensory and motor level stimulation on post-stroke dysphagia. This is a randomized trial conducted in an inpatient rehabilitation facility. Thirty-one participants who had dysphagia caused by stroke within 6 months prior to enrolment were included. Participants were excluded if they had a contraindication for electrical stimulation, previous stroke, psychiatric disorder, contraindications for modified barium swallow study (MBSS), or pre-morbid dysphagia. Each patient received ten sessions that included 45 min of anterior neck sensory or motor level electrical stimulation in addition to traditional dysphagia therapy. Motor stimulation was administered at an intensity sufficient to produce muscle contractions. Sensory stimulation was defined as the threshold at which the patient feels a tingling sensation on their skin. Swallow functional assessment measure (FAM), dysphagia outcome severity scale (DOSS), national outcome measurement system (NOMS), penetration aspiration scale (PAS), diet change, and the swallowing quality of life questionnaire (SWAL-QOL). Clinical outcomes were analyzed using a Wilcoxon signed-rank test, Mann-Whitney U test, RM ANOVA, or chi-square analysis. There was no significant difference in age, length of stay, or initial swallow FAM between groups. Patients in the sensory group showed significant improvement on swallow FAM, DOSS, and NOMS, while those in the motor group did not (Sensory: Swallow FAM (S = 48, p = 0.01), DOSS (S = 49.5, p = 0.001), NOMS (S = 52.5, p = 0.006); Motor: Swallow FAM (S = 20.5, p = 0.2), DOSS (S = 21, p = 0.05), NOMS (S = 29.5, p = 0.2)). When the groups were combined, there was statistically significant improvement on all measures except the PAS (Swallow FAM (S = 138.5, p = 0.003), DOSS (S = 134.5, p < 0.001), NOMS (S = 164, p = 0.0004)). When comparing motor to sensory NMES, there was no significant difference between groups for Swallow FAM (p = .12), DOSS (p = 0.52), or NOMS (p = 0.41). There was no significant difference in diet change for solid food or liquids among the groups, although 50% more participants in the sensory group saw improvement in diet. This study supports the use of electrical stimulation as part of the treatment plan for post-stroke dysphagia. Sensory-level stimulation was associated with greater improvement on outcome measures compared to motor level stimulation.

INTRODUCTION: Determining a patient's candidacy for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in severe COVID-19 pneumonia is a critical aspect of efficient healthcare delivery. A body mass index (BMI) ≥40 is considered a relative contraindication for ECMO by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO). We sought to determine the impact of obesity on the survival of patients with COVID-19 on ECMO. METHODS: This project was a retrospective review of a multicenter US database from January 2020 to December 2021. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality after ECMO initiation, with a comparison between patients classified into body mass index categories (<30, 30-39.9, and ≥40). Secondary outcomes included ventilator days, intensive care days, and complications. RESULTS: We completed records review on 359 patients, with 90 patients excluded because of missing data. The overall mortality for the 269 patients was 37.5%. Patients with a BMI <30 had higher odds of mortality compared to all patients with BMI >30 (OR 1.98; p = 0.013), those with BMI 30-39.9 (OR 1.84; p = 0.036), and BMI ≥40 (OR 2.33; p = 0.024). There were no differences between BMI groups for ECMO duration; length of stay (LOS); or rate of bloodstream infection, stroke, or blood transfusion. Age, ECMO duration, and modified-Elixhauser index were not independent risk factors for mortality. CONCLUSIONS: In patients receiving ECMO for severe COVID-19, neither obesity (BMI >30) nor morbid obesity (BMI >40) were associated with in-hospital mortality. These results are consistent with previous reports and held true after adjusting for age and comorbidities. Our data suggest further examination of the recommendations to withhold ECMO in patients who are obese.

Endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) are increasingly recognized for biological impacts on host cell function and susceptibility to infectious agents, particularly in relation to interactions with exogenous retroviral progenitors (XRVs). ERVs can simultaneously promote and restrict XRV infections using mechanisms that are virus and host specific. The majority of endogenous-exogenous retroviral interactions have been evaluated in experimental mouse or chicken systems, which are limited in their ability to extend findings to naturally infected outbred animals. Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) has a relatively well-characterized endogenous retrovirus with a coexisting virulent exogenous counterpart and is endemic worldwide in domestic cats. We have previously documented an association between endogenous FeLV (enFeLV) long terminal repeat (LTR) copy number and abrogated exogenous FeLV in naturally infected cats and experimental infections in tissue culture. Analyses described here examine limited FeLV replication in experimentally infected peripheral blood mononuclear cells, which correlates with higher enFeLV transcripts in these cells compared to fibroblasts. We further examine NCBI Sequence Read Archive RNA transcripts to evaluate enFeLV transcripts and RNA interference (RNAi) precursors. We find that lymphoid-derived tissues, which are experimentally less permissive to exogenous FeLV infection, transcribe higher levels of enFeLV under basal conditions. Transcription of enFeLV-LTR segments is significantly greater than that of other enFeLV genes. We documented transcription of a 21-nucleotide (nt) microRNA (miRNA) just 3' to the enFeLV 5'-LTR in the feline miRNAome of all data sets evaluated (n = 27). Our findings point to important biological functions of enFeLV transcription linked to solo LTRs distributed within the domestic cat genome, with potential impacts on domestic cat exogenous FeLV susceptibility and pathogenesis. IMPORTANCE Endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) are increasingly implicated in host cellular processes and susceptibility to infectious agents, specifically regarding interactions with exogenous retroviral progenitors (XRVs). Exogenous feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and its endogenous counterpart (enFeLV) represent a well-characterized, naturally occurring XRV-ERV dyad. We have previously documented an abrogated FeLV infection in both naturally infected cats and experimental fibroblast infections that harbor higher enFeLV proviral loads. Using an in silico approach, we provide evidence of miRNA transcription that is produced in tissues that are most important for FeLV infection, replication, and transmission. Our findings point to important biological functions of enFeLV transcription linked to solo-LTRs distributed within the feline genome, with potential impacts on domestic cat exogenous FeLV susceptibility and pathogenesis. This body of work provides additional evidence of RNA interference (RNAi) as a mechanism of viral interference and is a demonstration of ERV exaptation by the host to defend against related XRVs.

Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is associated with a range of clinical signs in felid species. Differences in disease processes are closely related to genetic variation in the envelope (env) region of the genome of six defined subgroups. The primary hosts of FeLV are domestic cats of the Felis genus that also harbor endogenous FeLV (enFeLV) elements stably integrated in their genomes. EnFeLV elements display 86% nucleotide identity to exogenous, horizontally transmitted FeLV (FeLV-A). Variation between enFeLV and FeLV-A is primarily in the long terminal repeat (LTR) and env regions, which potentiates generation of the FeLV-B recombinant subgroup during natural infection. The aim of this study was to examine recombination behavior of exogenous FeLV (exFeLV) and enFeLV in a natural FeLV epizootic. We previously described that of 65 individuals in a closed colony, 32 had productive FeLV-A infection, and 22 of these individuals had detectable circulating FeLV-B. We cloned and sequenced the env gene of FeLV-B, FeLV-A, and enFeLV spanning known recombination breakpoints and examined between 1 and 13 clones in 22 animals with FeLV-B to assess sequence diversity and recombination breakpoints. Our analysis revealed that FeLV-A sequences circulating in the population, as well as enFeLV env sequences, are highly conserved. We documented many recombination breakpoints resulting in the production of unique FeLV-B genotypes. More than half of the cats harbored more than one FeLV-B variant, suggesting multiple recombination events between enFeLV and FeLV-A. We concluded that FeLV-B was predominantly generated de novo within each host, although we could not definitively rule out horizontal transmission, as nearly all cats harbored FeLV-B sequences that were genetically highly similar to those identified in other individuals. This work represents a comprehensive analysis of endogenous-exogenous retroviral interactions with important insights into host-virus interactions that underlie disease pathogenesis in a natural setting. IMPORTANCE Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is a felid retrovirus with a variety of disease outcomes. Exogenous FeLV-A is the virus subgroup almost exclusively transmitted between cats. Recombination between FeLV-A and endogenous FeLV analogues in the cat genome may result in emergence of largely replication-defective but highly virulent subgroups. FeLV-B is formed when the 3' envelope (env) region of endogenous FeLV (enFeLV) recombines with that of the exogenous FeLV (exFeLV) during viral reverse transcription and integration. Both domestic cats and wild relatives of the Felis genus harbor enFeLV, which has been shown to limit FeLV-A disease outcome. However, enFeLV also contributes genetic material to the recombinant FeLV-B subgroup. This study evaluates endogenous-exogenous recombination outcomes in a naturally infected closed colony of cats to determine mechanisms and risk of endogenous retroviral recombination during exogenous virus exposure that leads to enhanced virulence. While FeLV-A and enFeLV env regions were highly conserved from cat to cat, nearly all individuals with emergent FeLV-B had unique combinations of genotypes, representative of a wide range of recombination sites within env. The findings provide insight into unique recombination patterns for emergence of new pathogens and can be related to similar viruses across species.

The Baksan Experiment on Sterile Transitions (BEST) was designed to investigate the deficit of electron neutrinos ν_{e} observed in previous gallium-based radiochemical measurements with high-intensity neutrino sources, commonly referred to as the "gallium anomaly," which could be interpreted as evidence for oscillations between ν_{e} and sterile neutrino (ν_{s}) states. A 3.414-MCi ^{51}Cr ν_{e} source was placed at the center of two nested Ga volumes and measurements were made of the production of ^{71}Ge through the charged current reaction, ^{71}Ga(ν_{e},e^{-})^{71}Ge, at two average distances. The measured production rates for the inner and the outer targets, respectively, are [54.9_{-2.4}^{+2.5}(stat)±1.4(syst)] and [55.6_{-2.6}^{+2.7}(stat)±1.4(syst)] atoms of ^{71}Ge/d. The ratio (R) of the measured rate of ^{71}Ge production at each distance to the expected rate from the known cross section and experimental efficiencies are R_{in}=0.79±0.05 and R_{out}=0.77±0.05. The ratio of the outer to the inner result is 0.97±0.07, which is consistent with unity within uncertainty. The rates at each distance were found to be similar, but 20%-24% lower than expected, thus reaffirming the anomaly. These results are consistent with ν_{e}→ν_{s} oscillations with a relatively large Δm^{2} (>0.5 eV^{2}) and mixing sin^{2}2θ (≈0.4).
