Infective second-stage juveniles (J2) of Meloidogyne spp. migrate towards host roots, which depends on several factors, including root exudates and soil temperature. Although Meloidogyne enterolobii is a highly virulent nematode that affects major agricultural crops worldwide, there is limited ecological data about it. The objective of this study was to determine the J2 migration pattern vertically in 14-cm long segmented soil columns towards tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and marigold (Tagetes patula) roots, each grown at two soil temperatures (20 or 26ºC). Bottomless cups with tomatoes or marigolds were attached to the top of each column; cups with no plants were used as untreated controls. Juveniles (1,000/column) were injected into a hole located 1 cm from the bottom of each column. The apparatuses were placed in growth chambers at 20 or 26ºC, and J2 were allowed to migrate for 3, 6, 9, or 12 days after injection (DAI). At each harvest, J2 were extracted from each ring of the columns and counted to compare their distribution, and root systems were stained to observe root penetration. M. enterolobii migrated over 13 cm vertically 3 DAI regardless of temperature, even without plant stimuli. The vertical migration was greater at 26ºC, where 60% of active J2 were found at distances >13 cm at 12 DAI. Temperature did not affect root penetration. Overall, a greater number of J2 was observed in tomato roots, and root penetration increased over time.

Lactobacillus delbrueckii, the type species of the genus Lactobacillus, is widely recognized as the primary starter culture in the dairy industry due to its proteolytic activity, which enables it to growth in milk. In this study, a comprehensive genomic analysis of the proteolytic system was conducted on L. delbrueckii strains. The analysis included 27 genomes of L. delbrueckii, with a specific focus on the key enzyme involved in this system, the cell envelope-associated proteinase (CEP). The amino acid sequences, as well as the protein-structure prediction of the CEPs, were compared. Additionally, syntenic analysis of the genomic locus related to the CEPs revealed high conservation in L. delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus strains, while L. delbrueckii subsp. lactis strains exhibited greater variability, including the presence of insertion sequences, deletions, and rearrangements. Finally, the CEP promoter region and putative regulatory elements responsible for controlling the expression of the proteolytic system in lactobacilli were investigated. Our genomic analysis and in silico characterization of the CEPs contribute to our understanding of proteolytic activity and the potential applications of these lactic acid bacteria in the dairy industry. Further research in this area will expand our knowledge and potential practical uses of these findings.

Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) evolved as a unique effector mechanism contributing to resistance against infection that can also promote tissue damage in inflammatory conditions. Malaria infection can trigger NET release, but the mechanisms and consequences of NET formation in this context remain poorly characterized. Here we show that patients suffering from severe malaria had increased amounts of circulating DNA and increased neutrophil elastase (NE) levels in plasma. We used cultured erythrocytes and isolated human neutrophils to show that Plasmodium-infected red blood cells release macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), which in turn caused NET formation by neutrophils in a mechanism dependent on the C-X-C chemokine receptor type 4 (CXCR4). NET production was dependent on histone citrullination by peptidyl arginine deiminase-4 (PAD4) and independent of reactive oxygen species (ROS), myeloperoxidase (MPO) or NE. In vitro, NETs functioned to restrain parasite dissemination in a mechanism dependent on MPO and NE activities. Finally, C57/B6 mice infected with P. berghei ANKA, a well-established model of cerebral malaria, presented high amounts of circulating DNA, while treatment with DNAse increased parasitemia and accelerated mortality, indicating a role for NETs in resistance against Plasmodium infection.

Due to the increasing tattoo practicing in Eastern countries and general concern on tattoo ink composition and safety, the green tattoo inks Green Concentrate by Eternal, for European and "for Asia Market Only" were analyzed, under the premise that only the former falls under a composition regulation. A separation of the additives from the pigment was carried out by successive extraction in solvents of different polarities, i.e., water, acetone and dichloromethane. The solid residues were analyzed by IR and Raman spectroscopies, the liquid fractions by GC/mass spectrometry. The relative pigment load and element traces were also estimated. We found that the European and the Asian inks are based on the same pigment, PG7, restricted in Europe, though at different loads. They have a similar content of harmful impurities, such as Ni, As, Cd and Sb and both contain siloxanes, including harmful D4. Furthermore, they have different physical-chemical properties, the European ink being more hydrophilic, the Asian more hydrophobic. Additionally, the Asian ink contains harmful additives for the solubilization of hydrophobic matrices and by-products of the phthalocyanine synthesis. Teratogenic phthalates are present as well as chlorinated teratogenic and carcinogenic compounds usually associated to the laser treatment for removal purposes, to a larger extent in the European ink. The composition of the inks does not seem to reflect regulatory restrictions, where issued.

The peach root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne floridensis, is an emerging species and may become a threat to peach growers if contamination and spread are not avoided. The influence of temperature and two plants - tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and French marigold (Tagete patula) - on the vertical migration of second-stage juveniles (J2) of M. floridensis was studied using 14-cm long segmented soil columns. Plants were transplanted into cups attached to the top of each column. Nylon meshes were placed between cups and columns to prevent downward root growth. About 1,000 freshly hatched J2 were injected into the base of the columns and then the columns were transferred to growth chambers at 20 and 26°C under a completely randomized block design with four replicates. The number of J2 in each ring of the columns as well as inside tomato or marigold roots was recorded at 3, 6, 9, and 12 days after injection (DAI). Nematode data were subjected to a repeated measures MANOVA. The presence of plants did not improve J2 migration as compared to control. M. floridensis migration was best at 20°C at first, with J2 migrating more than 13 cm as soon as 3 DAI, while it took 9 DAI for J2 to migrate long distances at 26°C. The distribution of J2 along the columns was similar at both temperatures at 12 DAI. Temperature had no influence on J2 penetration. French marigold did not hinder J2 migration, but fewer J2 penetrated its roots.

We report the draft genome sequence of Fructobacillus tropaeoli CRL 2034, a strain isolated from ripe fig in Tucumán province, Argentina. The interest in studying the genome of this fructophilic lactic acid bacterium strain was motivated by its ability to produce high levels of mannitol from fructose. This polyol has multiple industrial applications; however, it is mainly used as low calorie sugar in the food industry. The assembled genome of this strain consists of a 1.66-Mbp circular chromosome with 1465 coding sequences and a G+C content of 44.6%. The analysis of this genome supports the one step reaction of fructose reduction to mannitol by the mannitol 2-dehydrogenase enzyme, which together with a fructose permease, were identified as involved in mannitol synthesis. In addition, a phylogenetic analysis was performed including other Leuconostocaceae members to which the Fructobacillus genus belongs to; according to the 16S rRNA gene sequences, the strain CRL 2034 was located in the Fructobacillus clade. The present genome sequence could be useful to further elucidate regulatory processes of mannitol and other bioactive metabolites and to highlight the biotechnological potential of this fruit-origin Fructobacillus strain.

BACKGROUND: Familial amyloid polyneuropathy (FAP) or ATTRv (amyloid TTR variant) amyloidosis is a fatal hereditary disease characterized by the deposition of amyloid fibrils composed of transthyretin (TTR). The current diagnosis of ATTRv relies on genetic identification of TTR mutations and on Congo Red-positive amyloid deposits, which are absent in most ATTRv patients that are asymptomatic or early symptomatic, supporting the need for novel biomarkers to identify patients in earlier disease phases allowing disease control. METHODS: In an effort to search for new markers for ATTRv, our group searched for nine inflammation markers in ATTRv serum from a cohort of 28 Brazilian ATTRv patients. RESULTS: We found that the levels of six markers were increased (TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-8, IL-33, IFN-ß and IL-10), one had decreased levels (IL-12) and two of them were unchanged (IL-6 and cortisol). Interestingly, asymptomatic patients already presented high levels of IL-33, IL-1ß and IL-10, suggesting that inflammation may take place before fibril deposition. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings shed light on a new, previously unidentified aspect of ATTRv, which might help define new criteria for disease management, as well as provide additional understanding of ATTRv aggressiveness.

The primary goal of "in vitro-in vivo correlation" (IVIVC) is the reliable prediction of the in vivo serum concentration-time course, based on the in vitro drug dissolution or release profiles. IVIVC methods are particularly appropriate for formulations that are released over an extended period of time or with a lag in absorption and may support approving a change in formulation of a drug without additional bioequivalence trials in human subjects. Most of the current IVIVC models are assessed using frequentist methods, such as linear regression, based on averaged data and entail complex and potentially unstable mathematical deconvolution. The proposed IVIVC approach includes (a) a nonlinear-mixed effects model for the in vitro release data; (b) a population pharmacokinetic (PK) compartment model for the in vivo immediate release (IR) data; and (c) a system of ordinal differential equations (ODEs), containing the submodels (a) and (b), which approximates and predicts the in vivo controlled release (CR) data. The innovation in this paper consists of splitting the parameter space between submodels (a) and (b) versus (c). Subsequently, the uncertainty on these parameters is accounted for using a Bayesian framework, that is estimates from the first two submodels serve as priors for the Bayesian hierarchical third submodel. As such, the Bayesian method explained ensures a natural integration and transfer of knowledge between various sources of information, balancing possible differences in sample size and parameter uncertainty of in vitro and in vivo studies. Consequently, it is a very flexible approach yielding results for a broad range of data situations. The application of the method is demonstrated for a transdermal patch (TD).

BACKGROUND: Food irradiation is a widely used technique for improving the safety and shelf life of foods, including most spices. However, growing concerns by consumers about this technique require further investigation on the effects of radiation, both on the safety of the food and on its organoleptic properties. In this work, cloves of diverse origins were submitted to different irradiation doses in a 60 Co source. The presence of trapped radicals and their time-dependent decay after irradiation were assessed by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The volatile bioactive composition and the clove oil were evaluated before and after irradiation by gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry. RESULTS: Results show an increase of the amount of volatiles collected after irradiation, especially of caryophyllene oxide and acetic acid, although these are still minor constituents. No new compound was detected after irradiation. Radicals decay fast, and 60 days after irradiation they were undetectable by ESR. CONCLUSION: Gamma irradiation showed to be a clean technique for clove decontamination, since no significant change in the aroma or oil compositions was found, and low levels of trapped paramagnetic species, after the initial decay period, were detected upon irradiation. Furthermore, irradiation doses higher than those legally allowed are equally safe. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

PURPOSE: The consumption of Brazil nuts has been associated with benefits to lipid metabolism and reductions in total cholesterol and LDL concentrations. They are the richest natural source of selenium which has essential functions in human physiology. Genetic polymorphisms in Selenoprotein P could impair lipid and glucose metabolisms. The aim of this work was to verify the influence of polymorphisms in genes for selenoproteins on blood lipid levels after dietary supplementation with Brazil nuts in healthy adults. METHODS: The study included 130 healthy volunteers selected at the University of São Paulo, Brazil. They were supplemented with one nut a day for 8 weeks, followed by 8 weeks without intervention. The following analyses were performed: anthropometric measurements, serum fasting glucose, lipid profile, C-reactive protein and plasma MDA levels. The volunteers were genotyped for SNPs rs1050450, rs3811699, rs1800699, rs713041, rs3877899, rs7579, rs34713741, and rs5845 in genes for selenoproteins. RESULTS: The concentrations of total cholesterol and fasting glucose levels decreased after 8 weeks of supplementation (p < 0.05). Glucose levels were modulated by rs3877899 in SEPP1, with significantly lower levels observed for individuals with the GA + AA genotype (p = 0.025). In addition, rs7579 was associated with cholesterol concentrations, which were significantly lower for individuals with the GG genotype (p = 0.053). CONCLUSIONS: Supplementation with one Brazil nut a day for 8 weeks reduced total cholesterol and glucose levels. Furthermore, our results suggest that rs3877899 might be associated with glucose concentrations and rs7579 with cholesterol concentrations. Therefore, the effect of genetic variations should be considered in future nutritional interventions evaluating the response to Brazil nut supplementation.

BACKGROUND: The rising prevalence of childhood obesity in Asia has led to interest in potential risk factors such as infant health-related quality of life (HRQoL), temperament and eating behaviors. This pilot study evaluated the utility of administering parent-reported outcome measures (PROMs) to explore these factors in Filipino infants and examined the relationships between these factors and infant sex, formula intake and weight, over time. METHODS: Forty healthy, 4-week-old, formula-fed infants (n = 20 males) were enrolled in this 6-week, prospective, uncontrolled study during which infants were exclusively fed a standard term infant formula enriched with alpha-lactalbumin. On Day-1 and 42, anthropometrics were measured and mothers completed a 97-item measure of HRQoL [Infant Toddler Quality of Life Questionnaire (ITQOL)] covering 6 infant-focused and 3 parent-focused concepts and a 24-item measure of infant temperament [Infant Characteristics Questionnaire (ICQ)]. At Day-42, mothers also completed an 18-item measure of infant appetite [Baby Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (BEBQ)]. A 3-day formula intake diary was completed before Day-42. Nonparametric statistics were used to evaluate correlations among outcomes and compare outcomes by visit and sex. RESULTS: Thirty-nine infants completed the study; similar results were observed in males and females. Completion of PROMs was 100% with no missing responses, but Cronbach's α was low for many concept scales scores. ITQOL scores [range 0 (worst)-100 (best)] were generally high (median ≥ 80) except for Day-1 and Day-42 Temperament and Mood and Day-1 General Health Perceptions scores. ITQOL but not ICQ temperament scores improved significantly between Day-1 and Day-42 (P < 0.01). Mean ± standard deviation BEBQ scores (range 1-5) were high for Enjoyment of Food (4.59 ± 0.60) and Food Responsiveness (3.53 ± 0.81), and low for Satiety Responsiveness (2.50 ± 0.73) and Slowness in Eating (1.71 ± 0.60). Better HRQoL scores were significantly (P < 0.05) associated with high General Appetite scores (3 ITQOL concepts, r = 0.32 to 0.54), greater Enjoyment of Food (4 ITQOL concepts, r = 0.35 to 0.42) and low levels of Slowness in Eating (7 ITQOL concepts, r = - 0.32 to - 0.47). CONCLUSION: Findings demonstrated the utility of the ITQOL, ICQ and BEBQ for measuring HRQoL, temperament and eating behavior, and the need for further adaptations for use in Filipino infants. Cheese prepared from whole milk, raw and pasteurized, were analysed by an electronic nose based on piezoelectric quartz crystals and an electronic tongue based on potentiometric sensors, immediately after their preparation and along ripening (after 7 and 21 days). Whey was also analysed by the potentiometric electronic tongue. Results obtained by the electronic nose and tongue were found to be complementary, with the electronic nose being more sensitive to differences in the milk and the electronic tongue being more sensitive to milk pasteurization. Electronic tongue was able to distinguish cheeses made from raw and pasteurized milk, both analysing the whey or the curd, with correct classification rate of 96% and 84%, respectively. Besides, the electronic nose was more sensitive than the electronic tongue to the ripening process, with large differences between samples after 7 and 21 days, while the electronic tongue was only sensitive to the initial maturation stages, with large difference between freshly prepared cheese and with seven days of maturation.

Mannitol is a natural low-calorie sugar alcohol produced by certain (micro)organisms applicable in foods for diabetics due to its zero glycemic index. In this work, we evaluated mannitol production and yield by the fruit origin strain Fructobacillus tropaeoli CRL 2034 using response surface methodology with central composite design (CCD) as optimization strategy. The effect of the total saccharide (glucose + fructose, 1:2) content (TSC) in the medium (75, 100, 150, 200, and 225 g/l) and stirring (S; 50, 100, 200, 300 and 350 rpm) on mannitol production and yield by this strain was evaluated by using a 22 full-factorial CCD with 4 axial points (α = 1.5) and four replications of the center point, leading to 12 random experimental runs. Fermentations were carried out at 30 °C and pH 5.0 for 24 h. Minitab-15 software was used for experimental design and data analyses. The multiple response prediction analysis established 165 g/l of TSC and 200 rpm of S as optimal culture conditions to reach 85.03 g/l [95% CI (78.68, 91.39)] of mannitol and a yield of 82.02% [95% CI (71.98, 92.06)]. Finally, a validation experiment was conducted at the predicted optimum levels. The results obtained were 81.91 g/l of mannitol with a yield of 77.47% in outstanding agreement with the expected values. The mannitol 2-dehydrogenase enzyme activity was determined with 4.6-4.9 U/mg as the highest value found. To conclude, F. tropaeoli CRL 2034 produced high amounts of high-quality mannitol from fructose, being an excellent candidate for this polyol production.

Neutrophils are the main defense cells of the innate immune system. Upon stimulation, neutrophils release their chromosomal DNA to trap and kill microorganisms and inhibit their dissemination. These chromatin traps are termed neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) and are decorated with granular and cytoplasm proteins. NET release can be induced by several microorganism membrane components, phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate as well as by amyloid fibrils, insoluble proteinaceous molecules associated with more than 40 different pathologies among other stimuli. The intracellular signaling involved in NET formation is complex and remains unclear for most tested stimuli. Herein we demonstrate that a metabolic shift toward the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) is necessary for NET release because glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), an important enzyme from PPP, fuels NADPH oxidase with NADPH to produce superoxide and thus induce NETs. In addition, we observed that mitochondrial reactive oxygen species, which are NADPH-independent, are not effective in producing NETs. These data shed new light on how the PPP and glucose metabolism contributes to NET formation.

The ability of microorganisms to synthesize S-layer, the outermost structure of the microbial cell envelope composed of non-covalently bound proteins, has been ascribed to help microorganisms to exert their probiotic properties in the host. In this work, formation of S-layer by the potentially probiotic strain Lactobacillus acidophilus IBB 801 under different stress culture conditions (high incubation temperatures, presence of bile salts or NaCl, and acidic pH) was assayed. A marked S-layer synthesis by L. acidophilus IBB 801 was detected when the strain was grown at 42 °C and in the presence of 0.05 % bile salts or 2.0 % NaCl. The presence of S-layer proteins was further confirmed by transmission electron microscopy and protein identification by MS/MS. The differential expression of the proteome of this strain at 42 °C, when a marked formation of S-layer was detected, revealed the overexpression of six proteins mainly related to general stress and protein biosynthesis and translation, while four proteins detected in lower amounts were involved in DNA repair and energy metabolism. As L. acidophilus IBB 801 produces both a bacteriocin and S-layer proteins, the strain could be of interest to be used in the formulation of functional food products with specific properties.

BACKGROUND: Patient involvement in scoping the guideline is emphasized, but published initiatives actively involving patients are generally limited to the writing and reviewing phase. OBJECTIVE: To assess patients' added value to the scoping phase of a multidisciplinary guideline on infertility. DESIGN: Qualitative interview study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: We conducted interviews among 12 infertile couples and 17 professionals. INTERVENTION: We listed and compared the couples' and professionals' key clinical issues (=care aspects that need improvement) to be addressed in the guideline according to four domains: current guidelines, professionals, patients and organization of care. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Main key clinical issues suggested by more than three quarters of the infertile couples and/or at least two professionals were identified and compared. RESULTS: Overall, we identified 32 key clinical issues among infertile couples and 23 among professionals. Of the defined main key clinical issues, infertile couples mentioned eight issues that were not mentioned by the professionals. These main key clinical issues mainly concerned patient-centred (e.g. poor information provision and poor alignment of care) aspects of care on the professional and organizational domain. Both groups mentioned two main key clinical issues collectively that were interpreted differently: the lack of emotional support and respect for patients' values. CONCLUSIONS: Including patients from the first phase of the guideline development process leads to valuable additional main key clinical issues for the next step of a multidisciplinary guideline development process and broadens the scope of the guideline, particularly regarding patient-centredness and organizational issues from a patients' perspective.

Studies of nematode assemblages in natural ecosystems can contribute to better understanding of the occurrence, relevance, and ecology of plant-parasitic and other soil nematodes. Nematode assemblages and environmental parameters (organic matter, water content (WC), bulk density (BD), total porosity (Po), soil respiration, and soil texture) were investigated in two seasons (rainy and dry) in two forest areas of the Zona da Mata, Pernambuco State. The aim of our research was to evaluate the heterogeneity between two locations and seasons in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Structure and composition of the nematode assemblages differed between areas and across time. Rhabditidae dominated the rainy season in both forest soils. Rarefaction curves (RC) suggest that sampling to detect more nematode taxa should be more intensive in the rainy season. The forest soils have complex, stable soil food webs with high connectance and decomposition channels dominated by bacteria. The predator-prey relationships were not affected by changes in soil properties that fluctuate with time.

BACKGROUND: The oral cavity is frequently affected in chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD), with variable clinical presentations. The literature on the effective management of patients suffering from oral cGVHD is limited. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the clinical approaches used in the diagnosis and treatment of cGVHD in a group of health-care providers specialized in the oral care of oncology patients. The secondary objective was to assess the level of implementation of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) guidelines for cGVHD patients. METHODS: One hundred twenty questionnaires were sent to the members of the Oral Care Study Group (OCSG) of the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer/International Society of Oral Oncology (MASCC/ISOO). The questionnaire included 50 questions about the responder's demographics, level of exposure to cGVHD patients, diagnostic and evaluation methods in their practice, preferred treatment strategies for mucosal and salivary gland involvement, and preventive measures. RESULTS: Twelve responders, representing 12 sites, stated that they treat oral cGVHD patients on a regular basis. This fraction of responders was confirmed by another online survey. Eleven out of the 12 providers were dentists. Seventy-five percent of the providers did not use biopsy in order to diagnose oral cGVHD. The NIH scale for the clinical assessment was used sporadically. The first-line topical treatment for oral mucosal cGVHD was predominantly steroids (91.7 %), and the second preferred treatment was tacrolimus (41.7 %). The preferred treatment for hyposalivation was pilocarpine (41.7 %). The recommended frequency of oral cancer screening varied; half of the providers suggest a follow-up every 6 months. CONCLUSIONS: The responses described the common practices for oral cGVHD in several specialized centers across the world. The choice of topical treatments was influenced by the availability of medications in the provider's country.

The cell envelope-associated proteinase (CEP) of Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. lactis CRL 581 (PrtL) has an essential role in bacterial growth, contributes to the flavor and texture development of fermented products, and can release bioactive health-beneficial peptides during milk fermentation. The genome of L. delbrueckii subsp. lactis CRL 581 possesses only one gene that encodes PrtL, which consists of 1924 amino acids and is a multidomain protein anchored to the cell via its W domain. PrtL was extracted from the cell under high ionic strength conditions using NaCl, suggesting an electrostatic interaction between the proteinase and the cell envelope. The released PrtL was purified and biochemically characterized; its activity was maximal at temperatures between 37 and 40 °C and at pH between 7 and 8. Under optimal conditions, PrtL exhibited higher affinity for succinyl-alanyl-alanyl-prolyl-phenylalanine-p-nitroanilide than for succinyl-alanyl-glutamyl-prolyl-phenylalanine-p-nitroanilide, while methoxy-succinyl-arginyl-prolyl-tyrosyl-p-nitroanilide was not degraded. A similar α- and ß-casein degradation pattern was observed with the purified and the cell envelope-bound proteinase. Finally, on the basis of its specificity towards caseins and the unique combination of amino acids at residues thought to be involved in substrate specificity, PrtL can be classified as a representative of a new group of CEP.

Leishmaniasis is a widespread neglected tropical disease caused by parasites of the Leishmania genus. These parasites express the enzyme 3'-nucleotidase/nuclease (3'NT/NU), which has been described to be involved in parasite nutrition and infection. Bacteria that express nucleases escape the toxic effects of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). Hence, we investigated the role of 3'NT/NU in Leishmania survival of NET-mediated killing. Promastigotes of Leishmania infantum were cultured in high-phosphate (HP) or low-phosphate (LP) medium to modulate nuclease activity. We compared the survival of the two different groups of Leishmania during interaction with human neutrophils, assessing the role of neutrophil extracellular traps. As previously reported, we detected higher nuclease activity in parasites cultured in LP medium. Both LP and HP promastigotes were capable of inducing the release of neutrophil extracellular traps from human neutrophils in a dose- and time-dependent manner. LP parasites had 2.4 times more survival than HP promastigotes. NET disruption was prevented by the treatment of the parasites with ammonium tetrathiomolybdate (TTM), a 3'NT/NU inhibitor. Inhibition of 3'NT/NU by 3'-AMP, 5'-GMP, or TTM decreased promastigote survival upon interaction with neutrophils. Our results show that Leishmania infantum induces NET release and that promastigotes can escape NET-mediated killing by 3'-nucleotidase/nuclease activity, thus ascribing a new function to this enzyme.
