RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study brings lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (trans), and queer (LGBTQ+) populations into scholarly discourse related to precarious employment through a political economy of queer struggle. METHODS: Drawing on narrative inquiry, 20 gay, bisexual, and queer men shared stories of precarious employment that were analyzed using Polkinghorne's narrative analysis. RESULTS: Results tell an overarching narrative in three parts that follow the trajectory of participants' early life experiences, entering the labor market and being precariously employed. Part 1: Devaluation of LGBTQ+ identities and adverse life experiences impacted participants' abilities to plan their careers and complete postsecondary education. Part 2: Participants experienced restricted opportunities due to safety concerns and learned to navigate white, cis, straight, Canadian ideals that are valued in the labor market. Part 3: Participants were without protections to respond to hostile treatment for fear of losing their employment. CONCLUSIONS: These stories of precarious employment illustrate unique ways that LGBTQ+ people might be particularly susceptible to exploitative labor markets.

RESUMO

Sexual minorities are at increased risk of suicide; however, it is unclear whether there are within-sexual minority differences in risk across specific sexual identities-notably between bisexual and lesbian/gay subgroups. We therefore conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to quantify associations between bisexual identity and self-reported suicide ideation and attempt and the moderation of these associations by gender/sex, age, sampling strategy, and measurement of sexuality. Abstracts and full texts were independently screened by two reviewers, resulting in a total of 46 studies that met inclusion criteria and reported 12-month or lifetime prevalence estimates for suicide ideation or attempt. A consistent gradient was observed across all four outcomes, whereby bisexual respondents reported the highest proportion of suicide ideation or attempt, lesbian/gay respondents the next highest proportion, and heterosexual respondents the lowest proportion. Random-effects meta-analysis comparing bisexual individuals with lesbian/gay individuals yielded odds ratios (ORs) ranging between 1.22-1.52 across the four outcomes examined. Between-study variability in ORs was large. Thirty-one percent of heterogeneity was explained by sample type (e.g., probability vs. non-probability) and 17% by gender/sex. ORs were consistently larger for women (range: 1.48-1.95, all statistically significant at p < .05) than for men (range: 1.00-1.48, all p > .05), suggesting that gender/sex moderates the association between bisexual identity and suicide risk. Within-sexual minority differences in suicide risk may be attributed to structural and interpersonal experiences of monosexism, bisexual erasure and invisibility, or lack of bisexual-affirming social support, each of which may be experienced differently across gender/sex identities.

RESUMO

Growing research in the last two decades has begun to investigate the HIV risks and sexual health practices of transgender men, especially as a subpopulation of men who have sex with men (MSM) that likely shares certain HIV risks and sexual health practices with cisgender MSM, the sociodemographic group that continues to be at highest risk for HIV in many developed countries since the start of the epidemic. As part of our Community-Based Participatory Research project and larger strengths-based qualitative study that was dedicated to examine multiple factors that promote resilience to HIV utilizing the perspectives and lived experiences of middle-aged and older MSM, the case studies we present in this article feature the distinct insights and experiences of three HIV-negative transgender MSM from Downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada, who participated in our one-on-one interviews. The three case studies provide not only an enlightening snapshot of some of the specific contexts, HIV risks, safer sex practices, and HIV prevention needs of transgender MSM, but also a unique opportunity to critically reflect on the potential implications of the insights and experiences that were shared by our participants, particularly for adapting and developing current and future HIV services and programs to maximally benefit transgender MSM.

RESUMO

(E)-Trisubstituted allylic alcohols are commonly prepared from the corresponding (E)-enals, themselves readily accessible by a simple aldol condensation reaction. We demonstrate that these very same (E)-enals can be converted into (Z)-trisubstituted allylic acetates (and thus alcohols) by a ruthenium-catalyzed 1,4-hydrogenation of the corresponding dienol acetates. This simple solution to a long-lasting problem was applied to an industrially feasible synthesis of (-)-ß-santalol.

RESUMO

In the search for a new access to thujopsanone related compounds by cycloisomerization reactions of unsaturated propargylic alcohols and acetates, we found several interesting reaction types and demonstrated the complementarity of Au, Pt, and Cu catalysts. Thus, 6-en-1-yn-3-ol 10a underwent clean cyclization/ether formation to 16, in particular using Au catalysts (76-98%) or a newly prepared Cu(I)-triflimidate-catalyst (94%). The corresponding acetate 11 a underwent either the cycloisomerization with concomitant [1,2]-acyl shift (to 12: 78% using AuCl(3)) or an unprecedented rearrangement-cycloaddition leading to 20 (43% using [(tBuXPhos)AuNTf(2)]), a strained fused tricyclic ring system containing a [2.2.0] bicyclic subunit.

RESUMO

Since the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM) have been disproportionately impacted by HIV/AIDS health disparities. Research showed that resilience to HIV/AIDS is associated with increased use of relevant health services, lower sexual health risks, and improved mental health outcomes among racially and ethnically diverse gbMSM. As the subpopulation that has historically been impacted by HIV/AIDS the longest, older gbMSM living with HIV/AIDS have inarguably exhibited resilience to HIV/AIDS the most. The qualitative study described in this paper sought to identify and examine protective factors that fostered resilience to HIV/AIDS based on the insights and lived experiences of racially and ethnically diverse, older gbMSM. Applying a community-based participatory research approach that included the meaningful involvement of older gbMSM living with HIV/AIDS in different roles (i.e., advisory committee member, collaborator, peer researcher, and participant), the study recruited and included forty-one older gbMSM living with HIV/AIDS from Ontario, Canada, in confidential, semi-structured interviews. Utilizing thematic analysis, we identified three major themes from the participant interviews as factors that fostered the resilience of older gbMSM to HIV/AIDS and helped to address HIV/AIDS health disparities: (1) established protective factors, (2) behavioral protective factors, and (3) controversial protective factors. This paper argues for the importance of valuing and capitalizing on these protective factors in the conceptualization and development of interventions, services, and programs that are dedicated to fostering resilience to HIV/AIDS.

RESUMO

(+)-(R,Z)-5-Muscenone ((R)-1) was synthesized by an enantioselective aldol reaction, catalyzed by new ephedrine-type Ti reagents (up to 70 % enantiomeric excess). Substrate-directed diastereoselective reduction of the aldol product and Grob fragmentation of the tosylate of the resultant 1,3-diol afforded (+)-1. This approach also gave access to (-)-(R,E)-5-muscenone and (-)-(R)-muscone.

RESUMO

We describe in detail a direct, stereoselective synthesis of (-)-cubebol based on a Pt-, Au-, or Cu-catalyzed cycloisomerization in which control of the configuration of the propargylic center is essential for the facial selectivity. In addition, we show that cycloisomerization reactions of enantioenriched propargyl pivalates occur with substantial chirality transfer. We confirm a mechanism by means of cyclization followed by an [1,2]-acyl migration for the Pt- and the Au-catalyzed cycloisomerization. So far, no evidence supports that the Cu-catalyzed cycloisomerization follows the same reaction course.

RESUMO

Among the fragrance compounds synthesized by enantioselective protonation, (S)-alpha-damascone, (R)-muscone, and (S,S)-Vulcanolide are the most prominent ones. (S)-alpha-damascone has been prepared by four different procedures: from the magnesium enolate, from the lithium enolate, from the enol, and from the corresponding thiol ester. We now present a new, industrially viable protocol for the addition of allyl magnesium chloride to the 'cyclogeranoketene' by a Barbier reaction, followed by protonation of the ensuing magnesium enolate by an aggregate formed from (-)-N-isopropylephedrine, lithium isopropylate, and acetic acid, furnishing (S)-alpha-damascone in 91% yield and with 71% ee.

RESUMO

Over the past decade, evidence has accumulated to suggest that bisexual people experience higher rates of poor mental health outcomes compared to both heterosexual and gay/lesbian individuals. However, no previous meta-analyses have been conducted to establish the magnitude of these disparities. To address this research gap, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies that reported bisexual-specific data on standardized measures of depression or anxiety. Of the 1,074 full-text articles reviewed, 1,023 were ineligible, predominantly because they did not report separate data for bisexual people (n = 562 studies). Ultimately, 52 eligible studies could be pooled in the analysis. Results indicate that across both outcomes, there is a consistent pattern of lowest rates of depression and anxiety among heterosexual people, while bisexual people exhibit higher or equivalent rates in comparison to lesbian/gay people. On the basis of empirical and theoretical literature, we propose three interrelated contributors to these disparities: experiences of sexual orientation-based discrimination, bisexual invisibility/erasure, and lack of bisexual-affirmative support. Implications for interventions to improve the health and well-being of bisexual people are proposed.

RESUMO

[reaction: see text] The Cu(I)-catalyzed cycloisomerization of tertiary 5-en-1-yn-3-ols with an 1,2-alkyl shift affords stereoselectively tri- and tetracyclic compounds of high molecular complexity. These results are in agreement with a mechanism in which the cyclopropanation precedes the rearrangement.

RESUMO

Substrate-imposed steric constraints can be overriden by the pronounced preference of strong peracids for epoxidation on the π face, which has the highest electron density. For example, the syn:anti ratio for reaction (1) with CF3 CO3 H in CH2 Cl2 is 82:18, that with CH3 CO3 H in toluene is 3:97.

RESUMO

Two efficient enantioselective syntheses of the more active (S,S)-enantiomer of the powerful musk odorant Vulcanolide are described. In both syntheses, the key step is an enantioselective protonation of a ketone enolate. A third enantioselective protonation, of a thiol ester enolate, was applied for the determination of the absolute configuration of Vulcanolide by comparison with a known compound.
