RESUMO

Color is a pervasive feature of our psychological experience, having a role in many aspects of human mind and behavior such as basic vision, scene perception, object recognition, aesthetics, and communication. Understanding how humans encode, perceive, talk about, and use color has been a major interdisciplinary effort. Here, we present the current state of knowledge on how color perception and cognition develop. We cover the development of various aspects of the psychological experience of color, ranging from low-level color vision to perceptual mechanisms such as color constancy to phenomena such as color naming and color preference. We also identify neurodiversity in the development of color perception and cognition and implications for clinical and educational contexts. We discuss the theoretical implications of the research for understanding mature color perception and cognition, for identifying the principles of perceptual and cognitive development, and for fostering a broader debate in the psychological sciences.

As pediatric, adolescent, and young adult cancer survival rates increase, emphasis is placed on reducing late effects, including reproductive complications and potential impact to fertility. Male survivors are at risk of abnormalities in sperm, hormone deficiencies, and sexual dysfunction. This can impact one's progression into puberty and ability to have a biological child and impacts quality of life following treatment. Access to reproductive care is important and requires patient assessment and appropriate referral to reproductive specialists. This review addresses reproductive complications associated with therapy, standard-of-care testing, and therapeutic interventions. The psychologic impact on psychosexual functioning is also addressed.

Visual perception in adult humans is thought to be tuned to represent the statistical regularities of natural scenes. For example, in adults, visual sensitivity to different hues shows an asymmetry which coincides with the statistical regularities of colour in the natural world. Infants are sensitive to statistical regularities in social and linguistic stimuli, but whether or not infants' visual systems are tuned to natural scene statistics is currently unclear. We measured colour discrimination in infants to investigate whether or not the visual system can represent chromatic scene statistics in very early life. Our results reveal the earliest association between vision and natural scene statistics that has yet been found: even as young as 4 months of age, colour vision is aligned with the distributions of colours in natural scenes. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: We find infants' colour sensitivity is aligned with the distribution of colours in the natural world, as it is in adults. At just 4 months, infants' visual systems are tailored to extract and represent the statistical regularities of the natural world. This points to a drive for the human brain to represent statistical regularities even at a young age.

Aesthetics has been characterized as a triadic interaction of perceptual, emotional, and conceptual neural systems (e.g., Chatterjee & Vartanian, 2014). There has been much empirical effort to identify the visual features that contribute to the perceptual component of this triad (e.g., Mather, 2020). Here, we measured infants' visual preferences and adults' aesthetic preferences for 40 of van Gogh's landscape paintings and investigated the contribution of the chromatic and spatial image statistics of the art to infants' and adults' responses. We found that infants' and adults' responses were significantly related: infants looked longer at the art that the adults found more pleasant. We also found that our combination of chromatic and spatial image statistics could account for around two thirds of the variance in infant looking and adult pleasantness ratings. The amount of variation in the luminance and saturation of the art's pixels contributed to both infants' visual preferences and adults' aesthetic preferences, potentially identifying two "perceptual primitives" of aesthetics that can be traced back to early sensory biases in infancy. We also identified important differences in the types of image statistics that predict infants' and adults' responses. We discuss the findings in relation to theories of aesthetics, natural scene statistics, and infant vision and perception.

There is a need for a straightforward, accessible and accurate pediatric test for color vision deficiency (CVD). We present and evaluate ColourSpot, a self-administered, gamified and color calibrated tablet-based app, which diagnoses CVD from age 4. Children tap colored targets with saturations that are altered adaptively along the three dichromatic confusion lines. Two cohorts (Total, N = 772; Discovery, N = 236; Validation, N = 536) of 4-7-year-old boys were screened using the Ishihara test for Unlettered Persons and the Neitz Test of Color Vision. ColourSpot was evaluated by testing any child who made an error on the Ishihara Unlettered test alongside a randomly selected control group who made no errors. Psychometric functions were fit to the data and "threshold ratios" were calculated as the ratio of tritan to protan or deutan thresholds. Based on the threshold ratios derived using an optimal fitting procedure that best categorized children in the discovery cohort, ColourSpot showed a sensitivity of 1.00 and a specificity of 0.97 for classifying CVD against the Ishihara Unlettered in the independent validation cohort. ColourSpot was also able to categorize individuals with ambiguous results on the Ishihara Unlettered. Compared to the Ishihara Unlettered, the Neitz Test generated an unacceptably high level of false positives. ColourSpot is an accurate test for CVD, which could be used by anyone to diagnose CVD in children from the start of their education. ColourSpot could also have a wider impact: its interface could be adapted for measuring other aspects of children's visual performance.

BACKGROUND: Patients with malignant diseases are at high risk for refractory Clostridioides difficile infections (CDI). Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) restores the gastrointestinal microbiome and may be an effective treatment for patients who fail pharmacotherapy. However, FMT is not commonly used in the oncology population because of risk for donor-derived infection. OBSERVATIONS: The authors report successful use of FMT in a pediatric patient with refractory CDI actively receiving chemotherapy. The patient's symptoms improved 1 day following FMT. He did not experience infectious complications or other adverse effects. CONCLUSIONS: FMT may be a feasible option for treatment of refractory CDI in pediatric oncology patients.

BACKGROUND: The BCL-2 inhibitor venetoclax (ven) has revolutionized the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in elderly adults, leading to its recent FDA approval for this population in combination regimens. Although extensive data exist for adult myeloid malignancies, there are limited preclinical data on the efficacy and/or dosing of venetoclax for pediatric myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) or AML and thus little information to guide use of this regimen in pediatric patients. Our objective was to describe our single-center experience with venetoclax in combination with the hypomethylating agent 5-azacitidine (aza) in pediatric patients with MDS or AML. PROCEDURE: We conducted a retrospective chart review of patients treated at Children's Hospital Colorado prior to March 2020 with at least one cycle of ven/aza. Patients were included if between the ages of 1 and 25 years with a diagnosis of high-grade MDS or AML. AML patients had relapsed or primary refractory disease or were deemed poor candidates for standard chemotherapy. RESULTS: Eight patients received ven/aza, two for high-grade MDS and six for AML. Ven/aza was well tolerated by all patients. The most common adverse events seen with this regimen were gastrointestinal and hematologic. Morphologic responses were seen in six patients including both patients with MDS. All four AML responders became minimal residual disease negative. Three responders have thus far proceeded to allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant following ven/aza. CONCLUSIONS: Our clinical experience suggests that ven/aza is a safe and promising regimen that should be further explored with late-phase clinical trials.

The biological basis of the commonality in color lexicons across languages has been hotly debated for decades. Prior evidence that infants categorize color could provide support for the hypothesis that color categorization systems are not purely constructed by communication and culture. Here, we investigate the relationship between infants' categorization of color and the commonality across color lexicons, and the potential biological origin of infant color categories. We systematically mapped infants' categorical recognition memory for hue onto a stimulus array used previously to document the color lexicons of 110 nonindustrialized languages. Following familiarization to a given hue, infants' response to a novel hue indicated that their recognition memory parses the hue continuum into red, yellow, green, blue, and purple categories. Infants' categorical distinctions aligned with common distinctions in color lexicons and are organized around hues that are commonly central to lexical categories across languages. The boundaries between infants' categorical distinctions also aligned, relative to the adaptation point, with the cardinal axes that describe the early stages of color representation in retinogeniculate pathways, indicating that infant color categorization may be partly organized by biological mechanisms of color vision. The findings suggest that color categorization in language and thought is partially biologically constrained and have implications for broader debate on how biology, culture, and communication interact in human cognition.

Decades of research has established that humans have preferences for some colors (e.g., blue) and a dislike of others (e.g., dark chartreuse), with preference varying systematically with variation in hue (e.g., Hurlbert and Owen, 2015). Here, we used functional MRI to investigate why humans have likes and dislikes for simple patches of color, and to understand the neural basis of preference, aesthetics and value judgements more generally. We looked for correlations of a behavioural measure of color preference with the blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) response when participants performed an irrelevant orientation judgement task on colored squares. A whole brain analysis found a significant correlation between BOLD activity and color preference in the posterior midline cortex (PMC), centred on the precuneus but extending into the adjacent posterior cingulate and cuneus. These results demonstrate that brain activity is modulated by color preference, even when such preferences are irrelevant to the ongoing task the participants are engaged. They also suggest that color preferences automatically influence our processing of the visual world. Interestingly, the effect in the PMC overlaps with regions identified in neuroimaging studies of preference and value judgements of other types of stimuli. Therefore, our findings extends this literature to show that the PMC is related to automatic encoding of subjective value even for basic visual features such as color.

Colorfulness and saturation have been neglected in research on color appearance and color naming. Perceptual particularities, such as cross-cultural stability, "focality," "uniqueness," "salience," and "prominence" have been observed for red, yellow, green, and blue when those colors were more saturated than other colors in the stimulus samples. The present study tests whether high saturation is a characteristic property of red, yellow, green, and blue, which would explain the above observations. First, we carefully determined the category prototypes and unique hues for red, yellow, green, and blue. Using different approaches in two experiments, we assessed discriminable saturation as the number of just noticeable differences away from the adaptation point (i.e., neutral gray). Results show that some hues can reach much higher levels of maximal saturation than others. However, typical and unique red, yellow, green, and blue are not particularly colorful. Many other intermediate colors have a larger range of discriminable saturation than these colors. These findings suggest that prior claims of perceptual salience of category prototypes and unique hues actually reflect biases in stimulus sets rather than perceptual properties. Additional analyses show that consistent prototype choices across fundamentally different languages are strongly related to the variation of discriminable saturation in the stimulus sets. Our findings also undermine the idea that every color can be produced by a mixture of unique hues. Finally, the measurements in this study provide a large amount of data on saturation across hues, which allows for reevaluating existing estimates of saturation in future studies.

Adults perceive emotional expressions categorically, with discrimination being faster and more accurate between expressions from different emotion categories (i.e. blends with two different predominant emotions) than between two stimuli from the same category (i.e. blends with the same predominant emotion). The current study sought to test whether facial expressions of happiness and fear are perceived categorically by pre-verbal infants, using a new stimulus set that was shown to yield categorical perception in adult observers (Experiments 1 and 2). These stimuli were then used with 7-month-old infants (N = 34) using a habituation and visual preference paradigm (Experiment 3). Infants were first habituated to an expression of one emotion, then presented with the same expression paired with a novel expression either from the same emotion category or from a different emotion category. After habituation to fear, infants displayed a novelty preference for pairs of between-category expressions, but not within-category ones, showing categorical perception. However, infants showed no novelty preference when they were habituated to happiness. Our findings provide evidence for categorical perception of emotional expressions in pre-verbal infants, while the asymmetrical effect challenges the notion of a bias towards negative information in this age group.

Brentuximab vedotin (Bv) is becoming increasingly important in the treatment of Hodgkin lymphoma (HL), with improved outcomes and an overall favourable toxicity profile. However, Bv is associated with severe pulmonary toxicity when combined with bleomycin, suggesting that additive toxicity may be an important consideration. Furthermore, little has been published on tolerability in paediatric patients. We retrospectively evaluated the occurrence of pulmonary toxicity of Bv in 19 paediatric and young adult patients with relapsed or refractory HL. Patient characteristics, baseline health status, treatment regimens including cumulative doses of Bv, bleomycin, gemcitabine, radiation and carmustine, and the occurrence of pulmonary toxicity were collected. Seven (36·8%) of the 19 patients were treated with Bv. The odds of pulmonary toxicity were 4·0-fold higher (95% confidence interval 0·55-29·18) in patients exposed to Bv compared to unexposed patients in univariate analysis (P = 0·17). Similar results were found in multivariable analysis. Pulmonary toxicity occurred frequently in our cohort and was more common in patients who received Bv than in patients who did not receive Bv, although this was not statistically significant. Because patients with HL are exposed to a myriad of therapies with potential for pulmonary toxicity, continuing to evaluate the risk associated with Bv is critical.

RESUMO

Histiocytic sarcoma is an extremely rare tumor in children. It may occur sporadically or in association with other hematological malignancies. It arises most commonly in the lymph nodes but may occur anywhere in the body and clinical presentation is usually with advanced disease. Following tissue diagnosis and staging, management is with chemotherapy though there are no standard regimes. Surgery has been used successfully for local control. This is the first description of the use of peritonectomy and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy to treat histiocytic sarcoma. The 4-year-old patient has been disease free for 6 years.

Around 2% of males have red-green dichromacy, which is a genetic disorder of color vision where one type of cone photoreceptor is missing. Here we investigate the color preferences of dichromats. We aim (i) to establish whether the systematic and reliable color preferences of normal trichromatic observers (e.g., preference maximum at blue, minimum at yellow-green) are affected by dichromacy and (ii) to test theories of color preference with a dichromatic sample. Dichromat and normal trichromat observers named and rated how much they liked saturated, light, dark, and focal colors twice. Trichromats had the expected pattern of preference. Dichromats had a reliable pattern of preference that was different to trichromats, with a preference maximum rather than minimum at yellow and a much weaker preference for blue than trichromats. Color preference was more affected in observers who lacked the cone type sensitive to long wavelengths (protanopes) than in those who lacked the cone type sensitive to medium wavelengths (deuteranopes). Trichromats' preferences were summarized effectively in terms of cone-contrast between color and background, and yellow-blue cone-contrast could account for dichromats' pattern of preference, with some evidence for residual red-green activity in deuteranopes' preference. Dichromats' color naming also could account for their color preferences, with colors named more accurately and quickly being more preferred. This relationship between color naming and preference also was present for trichromat males but not females. Overall, the findings provide novel evidence on how dichromats experience color, advance the understanding of why humans like some colors more than others, and have implications for general theories of aesthetics.

We conducted a retrospective analysis of outcomes for children and young adults with sAML/sMDS who underwent HSCT at our institution. Thirty-two patients (median age 20 years) with sAML (n=24) and sMDS (n=8) received HSCT between 1990 and 2013. The median time from sAML/sMDS diagnosis to HSCT was 4.1 months (range: 1.2-27.2 months). The transplant regimens were primarily busulfan based (n=19). BM was the primary donor source (n=15). Eleven recipients were transplanted with residual disease. At a median follow-up of 62.3 months (range: 0.4-250.9 months), 14 patients had disease recurrence. Acute GVHD, grade III/IV, occurred in three patients. Causes of death were as follows: disease relapse (n=12), infection (n=2), pneumonia (n=1), pulmonary hemorrhage (n=1), acute GVHD (n=1), and graft failure (n=1). A PS of ≥90% at the time of HSCT had a significant impact on PFS (P=.02). Patients achieving pretransplant primary CR (n=8) and those with sMDS and RA (n=6) had prolonged PFS (P=.04). On multivariate analysis, shorter time to transplantation (≤6 months from diagnosis of sAML/sMDS) was associated with superior OS (P=.0018) and PFS (P=.0005).

The areas of the brain that encode color categorically have not yet been reliably identified. Here, we used functional MRI adaptation to identify neuronal populations that represent color categories irrespective of metric differences in color. Two colors were successively presented within a block of trials. The two colors were either from the same or different categories (e.g., "blue 1 and blue 2" or "blue 1 and green 1"), and the size of the hue difference was varied. Participants performed a target detection task unrelated to the difference in color. In the middle frontal gyrus of both hemispheres and to a lesser extent, the cerebellum, blood-oxygen level-dependent response was greater for colors from different categories relative to colors from the same category. Importantly, activation in these regions was not modulated by the size of the hue difference, suggesting that neurons in these regions represent color categorically, regardless of metric color difference. Representational similarity analyses, which investigated the similarity of the pattern of activity across local groups of voxels, identified other regions of the brain (including the visual cortex), which responded to metric but not categorical color differences. Therefore, categorical and metric hue differences appear to be coded in qualitatively different ways and in different brain regions. These findings have implications for the long-standing debate on the origin and nature of color categories, and also further our understanding of how color is processed by the brain.

Several studies reported improved outcomes of adolescents and young adults (AYA) with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) treated with pediatric-based ALL regimens. This prompted the prospective investigation of a pediatric Augmented Berlin-Frankfurt-Münster (ABFM) regimen, and its comparison with hyper-fractionated cyclophosphamide, vincristine, Adriamycin, and dexamethasone (hyper-CVAD) in AYA patients. One hundred and six AYA patients (median age 22 years) with Philadelphia chromosome- (Ph) negative ALL received ABFM from October 2006 through March 2014. Their outcome was compared to 102 AYA patients (median age 27 years), treated with hyper-CVAD at our institution. The complete remission (CR) rate was 93% with ABFM and 98% with hyper-CVAD. The 5-year complete remission duration (CRD) were 53 and 55%, respectively (P = 0.98). The 5-year overall survival (OS) rates were 60 and 60%, respectively. The MRD status on Day 29 and Day 84 of therapy was predictive of long-term outcomes on both ABFM and hyper-CVAD. Severe regimen toxicities with ABFM included hepatotoxicity in 41%, pancreatitis in 11%, osteonecrosis in 9%, and thrombosis in 19%. Myelosuppression-associated complications were most significant with hyper-CVAD. In summary, ABFM and hyper-CVAD resulted in similar efficacy outcomes, but were associated with different toxicity profiles, asparaginase-related with ABFM and myelosuppression-related with hyper-CVAD. It is claimed that the extraction of average features from rapidly presented ensembles is holistic, with attention distributed across the whole set. We investigated whether observers' extraction of mean hue is holistic or could reflect subsampling. Analysis of selections for the mean hue revealed a distribution that peaked at the expected mean hue. However, an ideal observer simulation suggested that a subsampling mechanism incorporating just two items from each ensemble would suffice to reproduce the precision of most observers. The results imply that hue may not be averaged as holistically and efficiently as other attributes.

RESUMO

Color varies along dimensions of lightness, hue, and chroma. We used maximum likelihood conjoint measurement to investigate how lightness and chroma influence color judgments. Observers judged lightness and chroma of stimuli that varied in both dimensions in a paired-comparison task. We modeled how changes in one dimension influenced judgment of the other. An additive model best fit the data in all conditions except for judgment of red chroma where there was a small but significant interaction. Lightness negatively contributed to perception of chroma for red, blue, and green hues but not for yellow. The method permits quantification of lightness and chroma contributions to color appearance.
