RESUMO
Long-distance migrations of insects contribute to ecosystem functioning but also have important economic impacts when the migrants are pests or provide ecosystem services. We combined radar monitoring, aerial sampling, and searchlight trapping, to quantify the annual pattern of nocturnal insect migration above the densely populated agricultural lands of East China. A total of ~9.3 trillion nocturnal insect migrants (15,000 t of biomass), predominantly Lepidoptera, Hemiptera, and Diptera, including many crop pests and disease vectors, fly at heights up to 1 km above this 600 km-wide region every year. Larger migrants (>10 mg) exhibited seasonal reversal of movement directions, comprising northward expansion during spring and summer, followed by southward movements during fall. This north-south transfer was not balanced, however, with southward movement in fall 0.66× that of northward movement in spring and summer. Spring and summer migrations were strongest when the wind had a northward component, while in fall, stronger movements occurred on winds that allowed movement with a southward component; heading directions of larger insects were generally close to the track direction. These findings indicate adaptations leading to movement in seasonally favorable directions. We compare our results from China with similar studies in Europe and North America and conclude that ecological patterns and behavioral adaptations are similar across the Northern Hemisphere. The predominance of pests among these nocturnal migrants has severe implications for food security and grower prosperity throughout this heavily populated region, and knowledge of their migrations is potentially valuable for forecasting pest impacts and planning timely management actions.

Household air purifiers are widely used to enhance indoor air quality. However, limited information exists regarding the factors that influence their long-term performance. This study investigates the impact of various residential environments on the long-term efficacy of air purifiers. We deployed household air purifiers in three distinct environments: oily fumes (Group A), non-oily fumes (Group C), and a mixture of oily and non-oily fumes (Groups B-I and B-II). The selected air filter consisted of melt-blown polypropylene and activated carbon, materials commonly employed in commercial applications. The results demonstrated that the control efficiency of air purifiers in non-oily fume environments surpassed that in oily fume environments. After 12 months of operation, particulate matter (PM) concentrations rose by 92.7% and 76.5% in oily and non-oily fume environments, respectively. This increase was primarily attributed to the loss of electrostatic attraction in the polypropylene material due to the organic matter in oily particulate matter. After operating for 1000 h, the clean air delivery rate (CADR) attenuation rates for particulate matter were 70.6%, 19.9%, 16.7%, and 12.5% in Groups A, B-I, B-II, and C, respectively. The CADR attenuation rates for formaldehyde were 80.6%, 48.4%, 38.9%, and 37.3% in the same groups. Additionally, we developed a real-time prediction model for the service life of air purifiers using data from online sensors. When operated for 12 h daily at varying PM concentrations, the filters had an expected service life of 29-97 days in non-oily fume environments and 66-220 days in oily fume environments.
RESUMO
The nonmigratory grasshopper Oedaleus infernalis Saussure (Orthoptera : Acridoidea) is an agricultural pest to crops and forage grasses over a wide natural geographical distribution in China. The genetic diversity and genetic variation among 10 geographically separated populations of O. infernalis was assessed using polymerase chain reaction-based molecular markers, including the intersimple sequence repeat and mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase sequences. A high level of genetic diversity was detected among these populations from the intersimple sequence repeat (H: 0.2628, I: 0.4129, Hs: 0.2130) and cytochrome oxidase analyses (Hd: 0.653). There was no obvious geographical structure based on an unweighted pair group method analysis and median-joining network. The values of FST, θ(II), and Gst estimated in this study are low, and the gene flow is high (Nm > 4). Analysis of the molecular variance suggested that most of the genetic variation occurs within populations, whereas only a small variation takes place between populations. No significant correlation was found between the genetic distance and geographical distance. Overall, our results suggest that the geographical distance plays an unimpeded role in the gene flow among O. infernalis populations.

The armyworm, Mythimna separata (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is an important polyphagous pest with a strong migratory ability. Recently, third-generation larvae have become an increasingly serious pest threat in Jilin Province of northeast China. To investigate the population source of this species, scanning entomological radar observations and insect mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) genes were used in this study. Five main results were found: (1) The peak period in captured second-generation moths was from mid to late July. The temperature and wind speeds were optimum for the moths to have migrated. Strong southwesterly winds occurred during the peak migration period. (2) Radar observations indicated that most of the moths' migration took place at a height of 600 m, often in a dense layer which formed at heights of 350-800 m. (3) Analyses of adult ovarian development and larval haplotypes showed third-generation larvae were progeny of both locally produced progeny and immigrant moths. (4) Based on our back-tracking and haplotype analyses, immigration led to an outbreak originated in the same source area to the southwest. (5) Emigration of second-generation moths was confirmed by both radar observation and mtDNA analysis. Forward trajectories indicated that the moths were capable of immigrating far from their overwintering range. These results are useful for improving the forecasting systems of this insect pest species.

Magnetic fields markedly affect the growth and development of many species of organisms potentially due to cryptochrome and endogenous presence of magnetic materials. Sensitivity to magnetic fields can also be involved in geomagnetic orientation by some long-distance migratory insects. In this study, near-zero magnetic fields (NZMF) in relation to normal geomagnetic fields (GMF) were setup using the Hypomagnetic Field Space System (HMFs) to investigate the effects of magnetic fields on the growth, development and reproduction of two species of migratory planthopper, the small brown planthopper (abbr. SBPH), Laodelphax striatellus, and the brown planthopper (abbr. BPH), Nilaparvata lugens. Exposure of both L. striatellus and N. lugens to NZMF delayed egg and nymphal developmental durations and decreased adult weight and female fecundity. The 1st-5th instars of SBPH and BPH showed different responses to NZMF. The 4th instar was significantly affected by NZMF, especially for BPH males, in which NZMF exposure reduced the difference in development duration between females and males. Compared with GMF, the vitellogenin transcript levels of newly molted female adults and the number of eggs per female were significantly reduced in both planthopper species, indicating a negative effect on fertility under NZMF. Our findings provided experimental evidence that NZMF negatively affected the growth and development of SBPH and BPH, with particularly strong effects on reproduction.
