BACKGROUND: Quantitative measurement of pupil change has not been assessed against the Richmond Agitation and Sedation Scale (RASS) and spectral edge frequency (SEF) during sedation. The aim of this study was to evaluate pupillometry against these measures in sedated critically ill adult patients. METHODS: In ventilated and sedated patients, pupillary variables were measured by automated pupillometry at each RASS level from -5 to 0 after discontinuation of hypnotics, while processed electroencephalogram variables were displayed continuously and SEF was recorded at each RASS level. Correlations were made between percentage pupillary light reflex (%PLR) and RASS, and between %PLR and SEF. The ability of %PLR to differentiate light sedation (RASS ≥-2), moderate (RASS =-3), and deep sedation (RASS ≤-4) was assessed by areas under receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. RESULTS: A total of 163 paired measurements were recorded in 38 patients. With decreasing sedation depth, median %PLR increased progressively from 20% (interquartile range 17-25%) to 36% (interquartile range 33-40%) (P<0.001). Strong correlations were found between %PLR and RASS (Rho=0.635) and between %PLR and SEF (R=0.641). Area under the curve (AUC) of 0.87 with a %PLR threshold of 28% differentiated moderate/light sedation from deep sedation with sensitivity of 83% and specificity of 83%. An AUC of 0.82 with a threshold of 31% distinguished light sedation from moderate/deep sedation with a sensitivity of 81% and a specificity of 75%. CONCLUSIONS: Quantitative assessment of %PLR correlates with other indicators of sedation depth in critically ill patients.

Multi-view clustering requires simultaneous attention to both consistency and the diversity of information between views. Deep learning techniques have shown impressive abilities to learn complex features when working with extensive datasets; however, existing deep multi-view clustering methods often focus only on either consistency information or diversity information, making it difficult to balance both aspects. Therefore, this paper proposes a view-driven multi-view clustering using the contrastive double-learning method (VMC-CD), aiming to generate better clustering results. This method first adopts a view-driven approach to consider information from other views to encourage diversity, thus guiding feature learning. Additionally, it presents the idea of dual contrastive learning to enhance the alignment of views at both the clustering and feature levels. The VMC-CD method's superiority over various cutting-edge methods is substantiated by experimental findings across three datasets, affirming its effectiveness.

As one of the common malignant cancer types, gastric cancer (GC) is known for late-stage diagnosis and poor prognosis. Overexpression of the receptor tyrosine kinase MET is associated with poor prognosis among patients with advanced stage GC. However, no MET inhibitor has been used for GC treatment. Like other tyrosine kinase inhibitors that fit the "occupancy-driven" model, current MET inhibitors are prone to acquired resistance. The emerging proteolysis targeting chimera (PROTAC) strategy could overcome such limitations through direct degradation of the target proteins. In this study, we successfully transformed the MET-targeted inhibitor crizotinib into a series of PROTACs, recruiting cereblon/cullin 4A E3 ubiquitin ligase to degrade the MET proteins. The optimized lead PROTAC (PRO-6 E) effectively eliminated MET proteins in vitro and in vivo, inhibiting proliferation and motility of MET-positive GC cells. In the MKN-45 xenograft model, PRO-6 E showed pronounced antitumor efficacy with a well-tolerated dosage regimen. These results validated PRO-6 E as the first oral PROTAC for MET-dependent GC.

The onset of bipolar disorder (BD) occurs in childhood or adolescence in half of the patients. Early stages of BD usually present depressive episodes, which makes it difficult to be distinguished from major depressive disorder (MDD). Objective biomarkers for discriminating BD from MDD in adolescent patients are limited. We collected basic demographic data and the information of the first blood examination performed after the admission to psychiatry unit of BD and MDD inpatients during 2009-2018. We recruited 261 adolescents (aged from 10 to 18), including 160 MDD and 101 BD. Forward-Stepwise Selection of binary logistic regression was used to construct predictive models for the total sample and subgroups by gender. Independent external validation was made by 255 matched patients from another hospital in China. Regression models of total adolescents, male and female subgroups showed accuracy of 73.3%, 70.6% and 75.2%, with area under curves (AUC) as 0.785, 0.816 and 0.793, respectively. Age, direct bilirubin (DBIL), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), free triiodothyronine (FT3) and C-reactive protein (CRP) were final factors included into the models. The discrimination was well at external validation (AUC = 0.714). This study offers the evidence that accessible information of common clinical laboratory examination might be valuable in distinguishing BD form MDD in adolescents. With good diagnostic accuracies and external validation, the total regression equation might potentially be applied to individualized clinical inferences on adolescent BD patients.

The electronic coupling between a metal electrode and single nano-entities is of unfading significance which impacts the heterogeneous electron transfer. Herein, we demonstrated a simple optical technique for directly imaging the transient interfacial electronic coupling events during electrochemical oxidation of single Ag nanoparticles on Au electrode. The electronic coupling brings out a dramatic dip behavior of bright field imaging traces, and is conductive to cross the energy barrier of oxidation for single silver nanoparticles. This dip behavior is further verified by in situ vis-transmission spectroscopy, and the heterogeneity of the Au-Ag electronic coupling down to single-nanoparticle level is uncovered by unifying the morphology and size of individual silver nanoparticles. These results suggest the interfacial electronic coupling facilitates electron transfer of single nanoparticles, and provide important insight into understanding detailed mechanism of nanoelectrochemistry.

In recent years, improving plants' resistance towards abiotic stresses with exogenous application of plant growth regulators and nutrients has emerged as a matter of great interest. The present study assessed the potential roles of kinetin (Kn, 0.2 mM) and calcium (Ca, 2 mM) in mitigating the salt (200 mM NaCl) induced inhibitory effects on seed germination and growth of choysum seedlings. The results indicated that NaCl stress significantly reduced the seed germination percentage (42.6%), germination potential (42.0%), germination index (52.1%), seedling vigor index (65.2%), and declined the fresh weight (43.8%), dry weight (52.2%), radicle length (37.2%), and plumule length (41.2%) of germinated seeds, compared to control treatment. The delayed germination and decrease in seedling growth were positively correlated with salinity-induced hormonal imbalance, ion toxicity, and oxidative stress. However, Kn and Ca pretreatment partially mitigated the adverse effects of NaCl stress, evident by early germination and enhanced seedling growth. Kn and Ca effectively increased the accumulation of proline, soluble protein, and soluble sugars, and upregulated the activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase, and ascorbate peroxidase that significantly reduced the production of malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide, and superoxide anions in germinating seeds, thereby minimizing the NaCl-induced oxidative damages. Moreover, Kn and Ca pretreatment counteracted the NaCl-induced ionic toxicity by decreasing Na+ and increasing K+ contents and maintained a balanced Na+/K+ ratio in radicles and plumules of choysum seeds. Additionally, Kn and Ca under NaCl stress enhanced hormonal regulation by decreasing the ABA levels with a concomitant increase of GAs (especially GA4) levels and promoted early germination. Remarkably, the co-application of Kn and Ca was most effective by completely counteracting the inhibitory effects of NaCl and maintaining seed germination kinetics, seedling growth, and biochemical parameters almost similar to that in the stress-free control treatment. These results demonstrate that supplementation of Kn and Ca on choysum seeds is an effective chemical strategy regulating the various physiological and biochemical responses that would result in better germination and growth of seeds under stress conditions.

The cultivation of leafy vegetables on metal contaminated soil embodies a serious threat to yield and quality. In the present study, the potential role of exogenous jasmonic acid (JA; 0, 5, 10, and 20 µM) on mitigating chromium toxicity (Cr; 0, 150, and 300 µM) was investigated in choysum (Brassica parachinensis L.). With exposure to increasing Cr stress levels, a dose-dependent decline in growth, photosynthesis, and physio-biochemical attributes of choysum plants was observed. An increase in Cr levels also resulted in oxidative stress closely associated with higher lipoxygenase activity (LOX), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) generation, lipid peroxidation (MDA), and methylglyoxal (MG) levels. Exogenous application of JA alleviated the Cr-induced phytotoxic effects on photosynthetic pigments, gas exchange parameters, and restored growth of choysum plants. While exposed to Cr stress, JA supplementation induced plant defense system via enhanced regulation of antioxidant enzymes, ascorbate and glutathione pool, and the glyoxalase system enzymes. The coordinated regulation of antioxidant and glyoxalase systems expressively suppressed the oxidative and carbonyl stress at both Cr stress levels. More importantly, JA restored the mineral nutrient contents, restricted Cr uptake, and accumulation in roots and shoots of choysum plants when compared to the only Cr-stressed plants. Overall, the application of JA2 treatment (10 µM JA) was more effective and counteracted the detrimental effects of 150 µM Cr stress by restoring the growth and physio-biochemical attributes to the level of control plants, while partially mitigated the detrimental effects of 300 µM Cr stress. Hence, JA application might be considered as an effective approach for minimizing Cr uptake and its detrimental effects in choysum plants grown on contaminated soils.

Functional genes, namely hzo/hao, nirS, hzs, and ccs gene, are efficient with high specificity for detecting anammox bacteria. Sc-nirS and An-nirS primer sets were proposed for targeting Scalindua/non-Scalindua anammox bacterial groups; previously, they have not been assessed for biogeographic study on marine-terrestrial transitional systems, specifically marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Here, we report phylogenetic distribution pattern of anammox bacteria in both northern South China Sea (nSCS) and Mai Po wetland (a coastal mangrove) using nirS gene-based primers. A well-delineated biogeographic distribution pattern from ocean to continental shelf was evident by combining both gene-based analyses as previously depicted using 16S rRNA as the biomarker. Furthermore, factors affecting the abundance and composition of An-nirS genes in Mai Po wetland were identified as substrate (NO3-/NO2- concentration) and anoxic/oxic condition in association to depth. An-nirS gene abundance was from 2.6 × 103 to 1.2-1.4 × 104 copies/g dry sediment in nSCS; and it was around 5 × 103 and 1-2 × 104 copies/g dry sediment in surface and subsurface sediments of Mai Po wetland, respectively. In addition, nirS gene abundance and distribution pattern of denitrifiers and anammox bacteria in the wetland indicates a competition relationship between them. Mangrove vegetation affected the community composition of An-nirS gene considerably, and a more homogeneous distribution pattern was observed in the mangrove forest than intertidal mudflats. Sc/An-nirS gene-based biogeographic insights on anammox bacteria have shed lights on the compositional and potential functional dynamics and emphasized the importance of molecular tools on refining the current microbial ecological patterns.

Salinity represents a serious environmental threat to crop production and by extension, to world food supply, social and economic prosperity of the developing world. Salicylic acid (SA) is an endogenous plant signal molecule involved in regulating various plant responses to stress. In the present study, we characterized the regulatory role of exogenous SA for their ability to ameliorate deleterious effects of salt stress (0, 100, 150, 200 mM NaCl) in choysum plants through coordinated induction of antioxidants, ascorbate glutathione (AsA-GSH) cycle, and the glyoxalase enzymes. An increase in salt stress dramatically declined root and shoot growth, leaf chlorophyll and relative water content (RWC), subsequently increased electrolyte leakage (EL) and osmolytes accumulation in choysum plants. Salt stress disrupted the antioxidant and glyoxalase defense systems which persuaded oxidative damages and carbonyl toxicity, indicated by increased H2O2 generation, lipid peroxidation, and methylglyoxal (MG) content. However, application of SA had an additive effect on the growth of salt-affected choysum plants, which enhanced root length, plant biomass, chlorophyll contents, leaf area, and RWC. Moreover, SA application effectively eliminated the oxidative and carbonyl stress by improving AsA and GSH pool, upregulating the activities of antioxidant enzymes and the enzymes associated with AsA-GSH cycle and glyoxalase system. Overall, SA application completely counteracted the salinity-induced deleterious effects of 100 and 150 mM NaCl and partially mediated that of 200 mM NaCl stress. Therefore, we concluded that SA application induced tolerance to salinity stress in choysum plants due to the synchronized increase in activities of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, enhanced efficiency of AsA-GSH cycle and the MG detoxification systems.

Biorecovery is emerging as a promising approach to retrieve gold from various sources, while its efficiency is usually restricted by the limited functional groups on natural microbial biomass surface. This study aims to intensify Pycnoporus sanguineus boosted sorption-reduction coupled gold biorecovery process via microbial surface modification. Results showed that grafting polyallylamine hydrochloride onto P. sanguineus biomass surface increased amino group content on microbial biomass surface from 1.29 to 2.81 mmol/g. When applying modified biomass to gold biorecovery with initial gold concentrations of 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 mM, biosorption equilibrium time shortened to the 12.5%, 37.5% and 41.7% of those obtained with pristine biomass, and sorption rate constants correspondingly increased to 11.2, 3.1 and 3.7 folds as well. Maximum sorption capacity increased 30% and the affinity between biomass and gold enhanced heavily after microbial surface modification. Meanwhile, microbial surface modification favored gold reduction and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) formation. The change of microbial biomass morphology from smooth surface with some branched structure to layered stacking structure with many pores and the increase of amino group content on microbial biomass surface were the main impetus for the gold bioreocovery process intensification.

The effect of depth on compost microbial communities is unclear but could be relevant to the management of windrows at commercial facilities. DNA extracted from 64 compost samples from seven windrows at a commercial facility were analyzed via deep 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The relative abundance of eight to nine genera was affected by depth during the transition from cooling to maturation phases between 4 and 6 months, whereas very few genera (0-1) showed a depth dependence in young, actively managed windrows or in mature windrows older than 10 months. Seven novel bacterial operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were detected in compost DNA and also in publicly available compost metagenomes. A compost metagenome was used to construct a metagenome-assembled genome for most of the abundant uncharacterized OTU in our samples and suggests its involvement in carbon cycling.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing major vascular surgery often develop postoperative pneumonia that impacts their outcomes. Conflicting data exist concerning the potential benefit of tapered-shaped cuffs on tracheal sealing. The primary objective of this study was to assess the efficiency of a polyvinyl chloride tapered-cuff endotracheal tube at reducing the postoperative pneumonia rate after major vascular surgery. Secondary objectives were to determine its impact on microaspiration, ventilator-associated pneumonia rate, and inner cuff pressure. METHODS: This prospective randomized controlled study included 109 patients who were randomly assigned to receive either spherical- (standard cuff) or taper-shaped (tapered cuff) endotracheal tubes inserted after anesthesia induction and then admitted to the intensive care unit after major vascular surgery. Cuff pressure was continuously recorded over 5 h. Pepsin and α-amylase concentrations in tracheal aspirates were quantified on postoperative days 1 and 2. The primary outcome was the early postoperative pneumonia frequency. RESULTS: Comparing the tapered-cuff with standard-cuff group, respectively, postoperative pneumonia rates were comparable (42 vs. 44%, P = 0.87) and the percentage (interquartile range) of cuff-pressure time with overinflation was significantly higher (16.1% [1.5 to 50] vs. 0.6% [0 to 8.3], P = 0.01), with a 2.5-fold higher coefficient of variation (20.2 [10.6 to 29.4] vs. 7.6 [6.2 to 10.2], P < 0.001). Although microaspiration frequencies were high, they did not differ between groups. CONCLUSION: For major vascular surgery patients, polyvinyl chloride tapered-cuff endotracheal tubes with intermittent cuff-pressure control did not lower the early postoperative pneumonia frequency and did not prevent microaspiration.

The purpose of this study was to assess the acceptability and efficacy of all types of pharmacotherapeutic agents in reducing the symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In this systematic meta-analysis, the dropout and response rates of various pharmacotherapy and placebo treatments reported by randomized clinical trials were compared. A total of 34 reports that described the acceptability and efficacy of PTSD pharmacotherapies were retrieved and analyzed. Of them, 30 trials examined the dropout rate as an index of acceptability and revealed the superiority of the PTSD pharmacotherapy to placebos (odds ratio, 0.75; 95% confidence interval, 0.66-0.86; n = 4313). The response rate was determined in 20 trials as an index of efficacy, showing that the PTSD pharmacotherapies were superior to the placebos (odds ratio, 1.47; 95% confidence interval, 1.34-1.62; n = 2166). Pharmacotherapy is an important component of the care of patients with PTSD.

INTRODUCTION: The study was designed to assess the impact of fluid loading on lung aeration, oxygenation and hemodynamics in patients with septic shock and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). METHODS: During a 1-year period, a prospective observational study was performed in 32 patients with septic shock and ARDS. Cardiorespiratory parameters were measured using Swan Ganz (n = 29) or PiCCO catheters (n = 3). Lung aeration and regional pulmonary blood flows were measured using bedside transthoracic ultrasound. Measurements were performed before (T0), at the end of volume expansion (T1) and 40 minutes later (T2), consisting of 1-L of saline over 30 minutes during the first 48 h following onset of septic shock and ARDS. RESULTS: Lung ultrasound score increased by 23% at T2, from 13 at baseline to 16 (P < 0.001). Cardiac index and cardiac filling pressures increased significantly at T1 (P < 0.001) and returned to control values at T2. The increase in lung ultrasound score was statistically correlated with fluid loading-induced increase in cardiac index and was not associated with increase in pulmonary shunt or regional pulmonary blood flow. At T1, PaO2/FiO2 significantly increased (P < 0.005) from 144 (123 to 198) to 165 (128 to 226) and returned to control values at T2, whereas lung ultrasound score continued to increase. CONCLUSIONS: Early fluid loading transitorily improves hemodynamics and oxygenation and worsens lung aeration. Aeration changes can be detected at the bedside by transthoracic lung ultrasound, which may serve as a safeguard against excessive fluid loading.

OBJECTIVE: The Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP)model is an impressive effort to overcome shortcomings of traditional diagnostic systems. However, almost all of the quantitative empirical evidence used to structure the model comes from Western cultures and is built upon traditional diagnostic categories. This study aims to provide a detailed Chinese version of the HiTOP structure, ranging from symptoms based on The Symptom Checklist 90-R (SCL-90-R) up to the general factor. METHODS: We explored the detailed hierarchical structure of the SCL-90-R scale in adult (N = 34,222) and adolescent (N = 1973) clinical sample from Shanghai Mental Health Center, using extended bass-ackwards approach to draw the HiTOP model. RESULTS: The Chinese HiTOP structure had a general factor at the top, 4 higher-order spectra (Internalizing, Externalizing, Broad Thought Disorder and Somatization and Somatic Anxiety) and 6 subfactors (Distress, Somatoform, Hostility, Fear, Psychosis and OCD) across both adult and adolescent samples. In addition, the adult sample contained 2 other subfactors: a) Sleep, and b) Suicide and Guilt. At the symptom level, some items were posited to components diverged from the original SCL-90-R subscales. CONCLUSIONS: These findings offer the first description of the HiTOP structure in two Chinese samples and demonstrate that the SCL-90-R can be used to examine the HiTOP structure. The Somatization spectrum first emerged as a higher-order dimension, suggesting structural differences between Western and Eastern cultures. The results also suggest that transdiagnostic research should (1) further examine the positioning of somatoform symptoms using measures in other Eastern samples, and (2) place more emphasis on interpreting SCL-90-R results across different cultures.

Lipid-based drug delivery systems hold immense promise in addressing critical medical needs, from cancer and neurodegenerative diseases to infectious diseases. By encapsulating active pharmaceutical ingredients - ranging from small molecule drugs to proteins and nucleic acids - these nanocarriers enhance treatment efficacy and safety. However, their commercial success faces hurdles, such as the lack of a systematic design approach and the issues related to scalability and reproducibility. This work aims to provide insights into the drug-phospholipid interaction by combining molecular dynamic simulations and thermodynamic modelling techniques. In particular, we have made a connection between the structural properties of the drug-phospholipid system and the physicochemical performance of the drug-loaded liposomal nanoformulations. We have considered two prototypical drugs, felodipine (FEL) and naproxen (NPX), and one model hydrogenated soy phosphatidylcholine (HSPC) bilayer membrane. Molecular dynamic simulations revealed which regions within the phospholipid bilayers are most and least favoured by the drug molecules. NPX tends to reside at the water-phospholipid interface and is characterized by a lower free energy barrier for bilayer membrane permeation. Meanwhile, FEL prefers to sit within the hydrophobic tails of the phospholipids and is characterized by a higher free energy barrier for membrane permeation. Flory-Huggins thermodynamic modelling, small angle X-ray scattering, dynamic light scattering, TEM, and drug release studies of these liposomal nanoformulations confirmed this drug-phospholipid structural difference. The naproxen-phospholipid system has a lower free energy barrier for permeation, higher drug miscibility with the bilayer, larger liposomal nanoparticle size, and faster drug release in the aqueous medium than felodipine. We suggest that this combination of molecular dynamics and thermodynamics approach may offer a new tool for designing and developing lipid-based nanocarriers for unmet medical applications.

Inadequately managed solid organic waste generation poses a threat to the environment and human health globally. Biotransformation with the black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) is emerging as talent technology for solid waste management. However, there is a lack of understanding of whether BSFL can effectively suppress potential pathogenic microorganisms during management and the underlying mechanisms. In this study, we investigated the temporal variations of microorganisms in two common types of solid waste, i.e., kitchen waste (KW) and pig manure (PM). Natural composting and composting with BSFL under three different pH levels (pH 5, 7, and 9) were established to explore their impact on microbial communities in compost and the gut of BSFL. The results showed that the compost of kitchen waste and pig manure led to an increase in relative abundance of various potentially pathogenic bacteria. Temporal gradient analyses revealed that the most substantial reduction in the relative abundance and diversity of potentially pathogenic microorganisms occurred when the initial pH of both two wastes were adjusted to 7 upon the introduction of BSFL. Through network and pls-pm analysis, it was discovered that the gut microbiota of BSFL occupied an ecological niche in the compost, inhibiting the proliferation of potentially pathogenic microorganisms. This study has revealed the potential of BSFL in reducing public health risks during the solid waste management process, providing robust support for sustainable waste management.

Biochar was popularly used for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in vegetable production, but using biochar does not necessarily guarantee a reduction in GHG emissions. Herein, it's meaningful to elucidate the intricate interplay among biochar properties, soil characteristics, and GHG emissions in vegetable production to provide valuable insights for informed and effective mitigation strategies. Therefore, in current research, a meta-analysis of 43 publications was employed to address these issues. The boost-regression analysis results indicated that the performance of biochar in inhibiting N2O emissions was most affected by the N application rate both in high and low N application conditions. Besides, biochar had dual roles and showed well performance in reducing GHG emissions under low N input (≤300 kg N ha-1), while having the opposite effect during high N input (>300 kg N ha-1). Specifically, applying biochar under low N fertilization input could obviously reduce soil N2O emissions, CO2 emissions, and CH4 emissions by 18.7 %, 17.9 %, and 16.9 %, respectively. However, the biochar application under high N fertilization input significantly (P < 0.05) increased soil N2O emissions, CO2 emissions, and CH4 emissions by 39.7 %, 43.0 %, and 27.7 %, respectively. Except for the N application rate, the soil pH, SOC, biochar C/N ratio, biochar pH, and biochar pyrolysis temperature are also the key factors affecting the control of GHG emissions in biochar-amended soils. The findings of this study will contribute to deeper insights into the potential application of biochar in regulating GHG under consideration of N input, offering scientific evidence and guidance for sustainable agriculture management.

Bacillus velezensis is well known as a plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and biocontrol agent. Nevertheless, there are very few reports on the study of B. velezensis on tomato early blight, especially the biocontrol effects among different inoculation concentrations. In this study, an IAA-producing strain, Bacillus velezensis YXDHD1-7 was isolated from the tomato rhizosphere soil, which had the strongest inhibitory effect against Alternaria solani. Inoculation with bacterial suspensions of this strain promoted the growth of tomato seedlings effectively. Furthermore, inoculations at 106, 107, and 108 cfu/mL resulted in control efficacies of 100%, 83.15%, and 69.90%, respectively. Genome sequencing showed that it possesses 22 gene clusters associated with the synthesis of antimicrobial metabolites and genes that are involved in the production of IAA. Furthermore, it may be able to produce spermidine and volatile compounds that also enhance plant growth and defense responses. Our results suggest that strain YXDHD1-7 prevents early blight disease by promoting growth and enhancing the defense enzyme activities in tomato plants. This strain is a promising candidate for an excellent microbial inoculant that can be used to enhance tomato production.

The chemical analysis on the aerial sections of Eupatorium adenophorum Spreng. resulted in the identification of four unprecedented 5/5 fused bicyclosesquiterpenoids, eupatorid A (1), and its analogues named eupatorester A-C (2-4) using various chromatographic techniques. Their structures were unambiguously confirmed by detailed spectroscopic investigations (including 1D, 2D-NMR and HRMS), and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The anti-inflammatory activities, in vitro tumor growth inhibitory activities and antibacterial activities of these compounds were evaluated.
