RESUMO

Recently a dark matter-electron (DM-electron) paradigm has drawn much attention. Models beyond the standard halo model describing DM accelerated by high energy celestial bodies are under intense examination as well. In this Letter, a velocity components analysis (VCA) method dedicated to swift analysis of accelerated DM-electron interactions via semiconductor detectors is proposed and the first HPGe detector-based accelerated DM-electron analysis is realized. Utilizing the method, the first germanium based constraint on sub-GeV solar reflected DM-electron interaction is presented with the 205.4 kg·day dataset from the CDEX-10 experiment. In the heavy mediator scenario, our result excels in the mass range of 5-15 keV/c^{2}, achieving a 3 orders of magnitude improvement comparing with previous semiconductor experiments. In the light mediator scenario, the strongest laboratory constraint for DM lighter than 0.1 MeV/c^{2} is presented. The result proves the feasibility and demonstrates the vast potential of the VCA technique in future accelerated DM-electron analyses with semiconductor detectors.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the status of depression and social anxiety in children and adolescents, and to analyze the association between body fat distribution and depression, social anxiety in children and adolescents. METHODS: A total of 1 412 children aged 7 to 18 years in Beijing were included by stratified cluster random sampling method. Body fat distribution, including total body fat percentage (total BF%), Android BF%, Gynoid BF% and Android-to-Gynoid fat ratio (AOI), were obtained by dual-energy X-ray absorption method. Depression and social anxiety were evaluated by Children Depression Inventory and Social Anxiety Scale for Children. Multivariate linear regression and restricted cubic spline analysis were used to estimate the linear and non-linear correlation between body fat distribution and depression and social anxiety. RESULTS: 13.1% and 31.1% of the children and adolescents had depressive symptoms and social anxiety symptoms respectively, and the detection rate of depression and social anxiety in the boys and young groups was significantly lower than those in the girls and old groups. There was no significant linear correlation between total BF%, Android BF%, Gynoid BF%, AOI and depression and social anxiety in the children and adolescents. However, total BF% and Gynoid BF% had significant nonlinear correlation with depression, showing an inverted U-shaped curve relationship with the tangent points of 26.8% and 30.9%, respectively. In terms of the nonlinear association of total BF%, Android BF%, Gynoid BF% and AOI with depression and social anxiety, the change trends of the boys and girls, low age group and high age group were consistent. The overall anxiety risk HR of body fat distribution in the boys was significantly higher than that in the girls, and the risk HR of depression and social anxiety were significantly higher in the high age group than those in the low age group. CONCLUSION: There was no significant linear correlation between body fat distribution and depression and social anxiety in children and adolescents. Total BF% and depression showed an inverted U-shaped curve, mainly manifested in Gynoid BF%, and this trend was consistent in different genders and different age groups. Maintaining children and adolescents' body fat distribution at an appropriate level is the future direction of the prevention and control of depression and social anxiety in children and adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the association between different growth patterns and metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents aged 7 to 17 years, and to provide suggestions for the prevention and control of metabolic syndrome in Chinese children and adolescents. METHODS: Data were collected from the research project "Development and Application of Technology and Related Standards for Prevention and Control of Major Diseases among Students" of public health industry in 2012. This project is a cross-sectional study design. A total of 65 347 students from 93 primary and secondary schools in 7 provinces including Guangdong were selected by stratified cluster random sampling method. Given the budget, 25% of the students were randomly selected to collect blood samples. In this study, 10 176 primary and middle school students aged 7 to 17 years with complete physical measurements and blood biochemical indicators were selected as research objects. Chi-square test was used to compare the distribution differences of growth patterns under different demographic characteristics. Birth weight, waist circumference and blood biochemical indexes were expressed in the form of mean ± standard deviation, and the differences among different groups were compared by variance analysis. Binary Logistic regression model was used to analyze the relationship between different growth patterns and metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents aged 7 to 17 years. RESULTS: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents was 6.56%, 7.18% in boys and 5.97% in girls. The risk of metabolic syndrome was higher in the catch-down growth group than in the normal growth group (OR=1.417, 95%CI: 1.19-1.69), and lower in the catch-up growth group(OR=0.66, 95%CI: 0.53-0.82). After adjusting for gender, age and so on, the risk of developing metabolic syndrome in the catch-down growth group was higher than that in the normal growth group (OR=1.25, 95%CI: 1.02-1.52), but there was no significant difference between the catch-up growth group and the normal growth group (OR=0.79, 95%CI: 0.62-1.01). Stratified analysis showed that the association between different growth patterns and metabolic syndrome was statistically significant in the 7-12 years group, urban population, and Han Chinese student population. CONCLUSION: There is a correlation between different growth patterns and metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents. The risk of developing metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents with catch-down growth is higher than that in the normal growth group, which suggests that attention should be paid to the growth and development of children and adolescents, timely correction of delayed growth and prevention of adverse health outcomes.

ß-Galactosidase is one of the most important enzymes used in dairy processing. It converts lactose into glucose and galactose, and also catalyzes galactose to form galactooligosaccharides (GOS), so-called prebiotics. However, most of the ß-galactosidases from the starter cultures have low transgalactosylation activities, the process that results in galactose accumulation in yogurt. Here, a site-directed mutation strategy was attempted, to genetically modify ß-galactosidase from Streptococcus thermophilus. Out of 28 Strep. thermophilus strains, a ß-galactosidase gene named bgaQ, encoded for high ß-galactosidase hydrolysis activity (BgaQ), was cloned from the strain Strep. thermophilus SDMCC050237. It was 3,081 bp in size, with 1,027 deduced amino acid residuals, which belonged to the GH2 family. After replacing the Tyr801 and Pro802 around the active sites of BgaQ with His801 and Gly802, the GOS synthesis of the generated mutant protein BgaQ-8012 increased from 20.5% to 26.7% at 5% lactose, and no hydrolysis activity altered obviously. Subsequently, the purified BgaQ or BgaQ-8012 was added to sterilized milk inoculated with 2 starters from Strep. thermophilus SDMCC050237 and Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus ATCC11842. The GOS yields with added BgaQ or BgaQ-8012 increased to 5.8 and 8.3 g/L, respectively, compared with a yield of 3.7 g/L without enzymes added. Meanwhile, the addition of the BgaQ or BgaQ-8012 reduced the lactose content by 49.3% and 54.4% in the fermented yogurt and shortened the curd time. Therefore, this study provided a site-directed mutation strategy for improvement of the transgalactosylation activity of ß-galactosidase from Strep. thermophilus for GOS-enriched yogurt making.

RESUMO

A 53-year-old female patient complained of 1 week of bilateral visual blurring. She was previously diagnosed with metastatic melanoma of the inguinal lymph nodes and treated with the oral targeted drug vemurafenib. She exhibited aqueous flare in the left eye, and her fundus examination revealed optic disc swelling in the left eye and bilateral serious detachment of the retinal neuroepithelial layer. Fluorescein angiography showed multiple pinpoint hyperfluorescence leakage spots in the prometaphase and appeared as multilobular dye pooling in the late phase. We diagnosed her as Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome and gave glucocorticoid treatment for eyes. Oral vemurafenib was also taken intermittently under the guidance of an oncologist. After treatment, her bilateral vision improved, the anterior segment inflammation disappeared, and the retinal neuroepithelial layer reattached, with presence of the "sunset glow" fundus.

Increasing researches have focused on the biological functions of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in human cancers. HOXA11-AS, a widely known lncRNA, has been confirmed to be involved in the progression of several cancers, including gastric cancer (GC). Whereas, the detailed mechanism of this lncRNA in GC remains to be further illuminated. The abundances of HOXA11-AS, miR-148a and WNT1 in GC tissues and cell lines were examined by qRT-PCR. Clinicopathological and Kaplan-Meier survival analyses were determined to explore the relationship between HOXA11-AS expression and outcomes of patients. Transwell assay was performed for the evaluation of cell migration and invasion. Bioinformatics, dual-luciferase reporter and RNA immunoprecipitation assays were employed to analyze the correlation between HOXA11-AS and miR-148a or miR-148a and WNT1. The protein levels of WNT1 and ß-catenin were assessed by western blot assay. Results showed that HOXA11-AS and WNT1 expression levels were upregulated, while miR-148a level was downregulated in GC tissues and cell lines relative to matched controls. Elevated expression of HOXA11-AS was associated with increased tumor size, lymph node metastasis, advanced TNM stage, as well as reduced survival of GC patients. HOXA11-AS induced migration and invasion of GC cells through serving as a molecular sponge for miR-148a. Furthermore, miR-148a inactivated WNT1/ß-catenin signaling pathway via directly targeting WNT1. HOXA11-AS increased WNT1/ß-catenin pathway activity, which was abolished by miR-148a overexpression in GC cells. In conclusion, overexpression of HOXA11-AS contributed to migration and invasion of GC cells via activation of WNT1/ß-catenin signaling pathway through repressing miR-148a, providing a prospective therapeutic target for GC.

Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate the correlation between blood pressure response to cold pressor test (CPT) and follow-up blood pressure after 8 years in subjects, and to evaluate the predictive value of CPT for long-term blood pressure levels. Methods: A total of 365 individuals from eight natural villages were enrolled by stratified cluster sampling from Mei County, Shaanxi Province in 2004. Baseline characteristics of subjects were collected and CPTs were conducted. Subjects were followed up in 2009 and 2012, respectively. According to the maximal change of systolic response (SR), the area under the curve (AUC) of systolic blood pressure change (AUC-SBP), the maximal change of diastolic response (DR) and the AUC of diastolic blood pressure change (AUC-DBP) in CPT, the individuals were divided into four quartile groups by above parameters, respectively: group Ⅰ (P(25)), group Ⅱ (P(50)), group Ⅲ (P(75)) and group Ⅳ (P(100)). The correlation between blood pressure response to CPT and the follow-up blood pressure was analyzed. Results: (1) There were no significant differences in baseline blood pressure levels and prevalence of hypertension among four quartile groups no matter it was grouped on SR, DR, AUC-SBP or AUC-DBP. (2) The prevalence of hypertension in each group from lowest (P(25)) to highest (P(100)) in 2012 was 25.64%, 30.67%, 38.03%, 55.74% on SR grouping (P<0.01), and 27.5%, 29.17%, 38.46%, 57.35% on AUC-SBP grouping (P<0.05), respectively. (3) There were no significant differences in the prevalence of hypertension among four groups in 2012 (P>0.05) either on DR or on AUC-DBP grouping. (4) The random effects model analysis showed that the correlation coefficient between SR, AUC-SBP and long-term systolic blood pressure increase were 1.91 (P<0.05) and 1.44 (P<0.05), respectively, and the correlation coefficient between DR, AUC-DBP and long-term diastolic blood pressure increase were 0.82 (P<0.05) and 0.78 (P>0.05), respectively. Age, male, body mass index, and fasting blood glucose were independent risk factors for long-term blood pressure elevation, and age, body mass index and fasting blood glucose positively correlated with changes in long-term blood pressure (all P<0.05). Conclusion: Individual systolic blood pressure response to CPT can be used as a predictor of long-term hypertension.

T-box transcription factor T (TBXT), encoding the brachyury protein, is an embryonic nuclear transcription factor involved in mesoderm formation and differentiation. Previous studies indicate that TBXT mutations are responsible for the tailless or short-tailed phenotype of many vertebrates. To verify whether the tailless phenotype in fat-rumped sheep is associated with TBXT mutations, exon 2 of the TBXT gene for 301 individuals belonging to 13 Chinese and Iranian sheep breeds was directly sequenced. Meanwhile, 380 samples were used to detect the genotypes of the candidate variations by mapping to their reads databases in the Sequence Read Archive repository of GenBank. The results showed that one missense mutation, c.334G>T (GGG>TGG) with a completely linked synonymous variant c.333G>C (CCG>CCC) was found to be associated with the 'tailless' characteristic in typical fat-rumped sheep breeds. The c.334G>T transversion led to the conversion of glycine to tryptophan at the 112th amino acid in the T-box domain of the brachyury protein. In addition, crossbreeding experiments for long-tailed and tailless sheep showed that CT/CT allele of nucleotides (nt) 333 and 334, a recessive mutation, would cause sheep tails to be shorter, suggesting that these two linked variants at nucleotides 333 and 334 in TBXT are probably causative mutations responsible for the tailless phenotype in sheep.

Objective: To investigate the correlations between gastric Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection and colorectal polyps or cancer. Methods: Among patients who finished colonoscopy exams in Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) between May 2012 and May 2017, 3 483 patients were diagnosed with colorectal polyps, 135 patients with newly diagnosed colorectal cancer. A total of 1 925 healthy subjects were enrolled as normal controls. Gastric rapid urease tests (RUT) were done in all patients. General clinical data, RUT results, sizes and numbers of polyps, cancer location were analyzed. Results: The proportion of Hp infection in patients with colorectal polyps was 31.5%, higher than that in healthy controls. The odds ratio (OR) of Hp infection in polyp group was 1.17 (95%CI 1.04-1.32) after age and gender were adjusted. The Hp infection rate in patients with polyps over or equal to 1 cm was significantly higher than that in patients with polyps smaller than 1 cm. Patients with more than 1 polyps presented a higher rate of Hp infection than patients with only 1 polyp. Hp infection rate in patients with colorectal cancer was 36.3%, with the adjusted OR 1.56 (95%CI 1.06-2.30). The location of colorectal cancer was not correlated with Hp infection. Conclusions: Gastric Hp infection is more common in patients with colorectal polyps than in healthy controls. Polyps ≥1 cm, multiple polyps and colorectal cancer are correlated with higher rates of Hp infection. Cancer location is irrelevant to Hp infection.

Objective: To examine the association of joint effect of overweight (including obesity) and elevated blood pressure (BP) with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in children. Methods: A convenient cluster sampling method was used to conduct a cross-sectional survey from November 2017 to January 2018 in a primary school in Huantai County, Zibo City, Shandong Province. A total of 1 319 children aged 6-11 years old who had complete data on anthropometric indices and variables collected using a questionnaire were included in the study. LVH was defined as left ventricular mass index (LVMI) ≥90 th percentile for sex and age of this population. Based on weight status (yes vs. no) and elevated BP status (yes vs. no), all participants were divided into four subgroups (normal weight and normal BP, normal weight and elevated BP, overweight and normal BP, overweight and elevated BP). LVMI levels or prevalence of LVH across four subgroups were compared. The multivariate logistic regression model was used to examine the association of joint effect between overweight and elevated BP with LVH in children. Results: The age of children was (8.4±1.6) years, and boys accounted for 53.3% (n=703). There were significant differences in LVMI levels and prevalence of LVH across four subgroups (P<0.05); Children with both overweight and elevated BP (n=184) had the highest LVMI levels and prevalence of LVH [LVMI: (30.69±0.32) g/m(2.7); the prevalence of LVH: 24.46%]. After the adjustment for potential covariates, compared to children with both normal weight and normal BP (n=657), the risk of LVH in children with elevated BP alone (n=136) was not increased [OR (95%CI) was 0.89 (0.30-2.62)]. Children with overweight alone (n=342) [OR (95%CI) was 5.69(3.39-9.55)] and those with both overweight and elevated BP [OR (95%CI) was 9.45 (5.47-16.33)] were at higher risk of LVH. Conclusion: The joint effect between overweight and elevated BP could be highly correlated with LVH in children.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the deviation of digital implant surgical guides during fabrication process in the Organical Dental Implant (ODI) system. METHODS: This study included two parts. The first part was the in vitro study. A resin block with a diagnostic template was used for the planning. After cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scanning, a surgical guide with eight implants was virtually designed using the ODI system. The guide was milled by a 5-axial numerical controlled milling machine, and an optical scanning was taken to digitalize the guide to a standard tessellation language (STL) form. The STL data were then imported into an ODI software and registered with the original design. The deviation of the sleeves between the design and the STL was measured in the ODI software and set as the golden standard. Then the ODI examination table was used to measure the deviation of the guide during fabrication. Examiners A and B measured 10 times separately. The reliability and the validity of the examination table was calculated. The second part was the in vivo study: The deviation during fabrication of 12 guides designed and fabricated by the ODI system were measured using the examination table. RESULTS: The standard deviation of the deviation measured using the examination table by examiners A and B were all below 0.40 mm (for the shell reference points) and 0.71 degree (for the angles). No significant difference was found between the two examiners for any implant sites. The result of the examination table was larger than that of the software for the shell reference point (t-test, P<0.05), but no significant difference was found for the angle deviation (t-test, P>0.05). The 45 implants positions in the 12 guides for the in vivo study were examined using the examination table. The deviations at the shell reference points were (1.06±0.29) mm (0.42-1.75 mm), and at the implant tip were (1.12±0.48) mm (0.41-2.44 mm). The angle deviations were (1.42±0.70) degree (0.29-2.96 degree). CONCLUSION: Deviation is unavoidable during the fabrication process of the guides. The examination table of the ODI system is a reliable and valid tool to measure the deviation during fabrication of the ODI guides. More studies should be designed to research the relationship between the fabrication deviation and the implant insertion deviation.

OBJECTIVE: This experiment studied the effects of first feed intake time post-hatch on growth performance, nutrient apparent metabolic rate and intestinal digestive enzyme activities in broilers. METHODS: Two thousand five hundred and twenty LingNan Yellow broilers were randomly allotted to seven treatments with six replicates of 60 each. The only experimental factor was the first feed intake time which was 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, and 54 hours after hatching. The whole experiment lasted for 21 days. RESULTS: During the whole period, the 30 h treatment had the best body weight and average daily gain (p<0.05), followed by the 24 h group performance optimization. Also, the 30 h group was observed to have the best apparent metabolic rate for ether extract (p<0.05) and crude protein (p<0.05) and the highest activities of amylase, lipase and trypsin in small intestine. And the 24 h group was second only to the 30 h group in terms of the above two measures. CONCLUSION: These results indicated that the appropriate first feeding time of LingNan Yellow broilers was 24 to 30 hours after hatching.

Most receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) contribute to tumor growth, and their ubiquitination and degradation is related to the inhibition of tumor growth. Our previous study showed that the ubiquitin ligase Cbl-b was expressed at low levels in multidrug-resistant (MDR) gastric cancer cells compared with their parental cells. However, whether enhancement of Cbl-b expression in MDR cancer cells could prevent tumor proliferation via ubiquitination and degradation of RTK remains unclear. In the present study, Cbl-b overexpression reduced cell proliferation in MDR gastric and breast cancer cells, and effectively inhibited tumor growth in vivo. Additionally, Cbl-b overexpression reduced the total protein level of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1R), an important member of the RTK family. Moreover, Cbl-b overexpression promoted interaction of Cbl-b with IGF-1R, and induced ubiquitination and degradation of IGF-1R and inactivation of the IGF-1R pathway. These results suggest that the ubiquitin ligase Cbl-b inhibited tumor growth via ubiquitination and degradation of IGF-1R in MDR gastric and breast cancer cells.

CodYst is a global transcriptional regulator that modulates the metabolic network in Streptococcus thermophilus ST2017. In this study, experimental data showed that the cell survival of the codYst defective mutant obviously declined at the presence of 10 mM H2O2, suggesting CodYst was involved in response to the oxidative stress. To investigate this phenomenon, transcriptome analysis and real time-quantitative PCR were performed and the results indicated that the transcriptional level of a bifunctional glutathione synthetase gene (gshF) was downregulated by about 3-fold in the codYst defective mutant, along with a decrease by 20% of the glutathione yield compared with the wild-type in minimal chemical defined medium, whereas half of the viable cells remained after H2O2 challenge. In vitro gel shift assays showed that the purified CodYst could bind to the promoter region of gshF, with a conserved CodYst box, confirming the regulation of CodYst on the gshF gene. To our knowledge, this is first report of CodYst in response to oxidative stress mediated by the regulation of gshF in S. thermophilus.

A 17-year-old young man with a history of swollen leg and intermittent jaundice was presented to Peking Union Medical College Hospital with acute fever and mental disturbance. He developed deep venous thrombosis, acute myocardial infarction and plantar skin necrosis during the past four years, and was presented with an acute episode of fever, thrombocytopenia, acute kidney injury, acute myocardial infarction, mental disturbance, and obstructive jaundice. Laboratory tests showed schistocytes on peripheral blood smear.High titer of antiphospholipid antibodies was detected.Strikingly, the activity of a disintegrin and metalloprotease with a thrombospondin type 1 motif, member 13 (ADAMTS13)was significantly decreased without the production of inhibitors. Images indicated stenosis of the common bile duct, common hepatic duct, and cystic duct, which caused dilation of bile ducts and the gall bladder. Corticosteroids and anticoagulation therapy were effective at first, but the disease relapsedonce the corticosteroids tapered down. Plasma exchange was administrated for 17 times, which was effective temporarily during this episode. Methylprednisolone pulse therapy, intravenous immunoglobulin, rituximab, anticoagulation therapy, and bile drainage, were all tried but still could not control the disease. The patient's family agreed to withdraw treatment after he developed septic shock.

AIMS: To explore the molecular mechanism of the carbon catabolite derepression in Lactobacillus fermentum 1001 when this strain consumed xylose and glucose simultaneously. METHODS AND RESULTS: The transcriptional level of ccpAf was measured by real-time qPCR, revealing that ccpAf transcribed mRNA normally in Lact. fermentum 1001. The ccpAf gene could complement the ccpA-deficiency of a Lactococcus lactis mutant. Moreover, when the phosphofructokinase from Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus ATCC 11842 was expressed in Lact. fermentum 1001, the recombinant preferred glucose to fructose rather than to xylose. All data suggested that CcpAf was functional in Lact. fermentum 1001. In addition, the promoter (Plx) activity of the xyl operon from Lact. fermentum 1001 was further test in Lactobacillus casei BL23, and it could drive the expression of green fluorescent protein in the presence of glucose. CONCLUSIONS: The ability of Lact. fermentum 1001 to co-utilize xylose and glucose resulted from the deficiency of catabolite responsive element in P1x rather than the null mutation of the ccpAf gene. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: Lactobacillus fermentum 1001 is a potential candidate as a CCR-absent cell factory to transform biomass to high-value-added products. P1x was provided for engineering LAB to enhance fermentation efficiency by avoiding CCR.

This article sought to analyze the clinical features of 154 patients suspected of having Ebola virus disease (EVD) in an Ebola holding center in Sierra Leone from October 1 through November 9, 2014. We found that 108 of the 154 patients were confirmed with EVD. Eighty-five had known outcomes. Forty-nine of the 85 patients had been exposed to EVD. The average mortality rate was 60%. The mean interval between the onset of symptoms and hospitalization was 5.8 ± 3.3 days. The mean incubation period was 9.2 ± 6.7 days. Common symptoms of the EVD patients on admission were fatigue (85.2%), anorexia (84.3%), fever (75.9%), and headache (72.2%). Our data showed that the total symptoms of confirmed EVD patients were significantly higher than those of non-EVD patients (9 vs. 5.5; p < 0.001). The likelihood of EVD was 87.6% when a patient presented more than 6 out of 21 symptoms on admission. The survivors were significantly younger than non-survivors (24.0 ± 10.0 years vs. 31.3 ± 15.3 years; p = 0.016). The real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis showed that, in the survivors, the virus load was significantly lower (Ct value: 25.2 ± 4.1 vs. 28.7 ± 5.7; p = 0.002). Multivariate analysis showed that age, fever, and viral load were independent predictors of mortality. Taken together, our data suggested that a cutoff of six symptoms could be used to predict patients with high or low risk of EVD. It seemed that age, fever, and viral load were the main risk factors associated with EVD mortality.

Following a 6-h inhalation exposure to aerosolized 20 and 110 nm diameter silver nanoparticles, lung tissues from rats were investigated with X-ray absorption spectroscopy, which can identify the chemical state of silver species. Lung tissues were processed immediately after sacrifice of the animals at 0, 1, 3, and 7 days post exposure and the samples were stored in an inert and low-temperature environment until measured. We found that it is critical to follow a proper processing, storage and measurement protocol; otherwise only silver oxides are detected after inhalation even for the larger nanoparticles. The results of X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements taken in air at 85 K suggest that the dominating silver species in all the postexposure lung tissues were metallic silver, not silver oxide, or solvated silver cations. The results further indicate that the silver nanoparticles in the tissues were transformed from the original nanoparticles to other forms of metallic silver nanomaterials and the rate of this transformation depended on the size of the original nanoparticles. We found that 20 nm diameter silver nanoparticles were significantly modified after aerosolization and 6-h inhalation/deposition, whereas larger, 110 nm diameter nanoparticles were largely unchanged. Over the seven-day postexposure period the smaller 20 nm silver nanoparticles underwent less change in the lung tissue than the larger 110 nm silver nanoparticles. In contrast, silica-coated gold nanoparticles did not undergo any modification processes and remained as the initial nanoparticles throughout the 7-day study period.
