RESUMO

Tropical rainforests in Southeast Asia are enriched by multifarious biota dominated by Dipterocarpaceae. In this family, Shorea robusta is an ecologically sensitive and economically important timber species whose genomic diversity and phylogeny remain understudied due to lack of datasets on genetic resources. Smattering availability of molecular markers impedes population genetic studies indicating a necessity to develop genomic databases and species-specific markers in S. robusta. Accordingly, the present study focused on fostering de novo low-depth genome sequencing, identification of reliable microsatellites markers, and their validation in various populations of S. robusta in Uttarakhand Himalayas. With 69.88 million raw reads assembled into 1,97,489 contigs (read mapped to 93.2%) and a genome size of 357.11 Mb (29 × coverage), Illumina paired-end sequencing technology arranged a library of sequence data of ~ 10 gigabases (Gb). From 57,702 microsatellite repeats, a total of 35,049 simple sequence repeat (SSR) primer pairs were developed. Afterward, among randomly selected 60 primer pairs, 50 showed successful amplification and 24 were found as polymorphic. Out of which, nine polymorphic loci were further used for genetic analysis in 16 genotypes each from three different geographical locations of Uttarakhand (India). Prominently, the average number of alleles per locus (Na), observed heterozygosity (Ho), expected heterozygosity (He), and the polymorphism information content (PIC) were recorded as 2.44, 0.324, 0.277 and 0.252, respectively. The accessibility of sequence information and novel SSR markers potentially enriches the current knowledge of the genomic background for S. robusta and to be utilized in various genetic studies in species under tribe Shoreae.

Bamboo is an important genetic resource in India, supporting rural livelihood and industries. Unfortunately, most Indian bamboo taxa are devoid of basic genomic or marker information required to comprehend the genetic processes for further conservation and management. In this study, we perform genome survey sequencing for development of de novo genomic SSRs in Dendrocalamus longispathus, a socioeconomically important bamboo species of northeast India. Using Illumina platform, 69.49 million raw reads were generated and assembled into 1,145,321 contig with GC content 43% and N50 1228 bp. In total, 46,984 microsatellite repeats were mined-out wherein di-nucleotide repeats were most abundant (54.71%) followed by mono- (31.91%) and tri-repeats (9.85%). Overall, AT-rich repeats were predominant in the genome, but GC-rich motifs were more frequent in tri-repeats. Afterwards, 21,596 SSR loci were successfully tagged with the primer pairs, and a subset of 50 were validated through polymerase chain reaction amplification. Of these, 36 SSR loci were successfully amplified, and 16 demonstrated polymorphism. Using 13 polymorphic SSRs, a moderate level of gene diversity (He = 0.480; Ar = 3.52) was recorded in the analysed populations of D. longispathus. Despite the high gene flow (Nm = 4.928) and low genetic differentiation (FST = 0.119), severe inbreeding (FIS = 0.407) was detected. Further, genetic clustering and STRUCTURE analysis revealed that the entire genetic variability is captured under two major gene pools. Conclusively, we present a comprehensive set of novel SSR markers in D. longispathus as well as other taxa of tropical woody bamboos.

The reactions of amide functionalized bisphosphine, o-Ph2PC6H4C-(O)N(H)C6H4PPh2-o (1) (BalaHariPhos), with copper salts is described. Treatment of 1 with CuX in a 1:1 molar ratio yielded chelate complexes of the type [CuX{(o-Ph2PC6H4C(O)N(H)C6H4PPh2-o)}-κ2-P,P] (X = Cl, 2; Br, 3; and I, 4), which on subsequent treatment with KOtBu resulted in a dimeric complex [Cu(o-Ph2PC6H4C(O)(N)C6H4PPh2-o)]2 (5). Interestingly, complexes 2-4 showed weak N-H···Cu interactions. These weak H-bonding interactions are studied in detail both experimentally and computationally. Also, CuI complexes 2-5 were employed in the oxidative dehydrogenative carboxylation (ODC) of unactivated cycloalkanes in the presence of carboxylic acids to form the corresponding allylic esters. Among complexes 2-5, halide-free dimeric CuI complex 5 showed excellent metal-ligand cooperativity in the oxidative dehydrogenative carboxylation (ODC) in the presence of carboxylic acids to form the corresponding allylic esters through C(sp3)-H bond activation of unactivated cycloalkanes. Mechanistic details of the catalytic process were established by isolating the precatalyst [Cu{(o-Ph2PC6H4C(O)(NH)C6H4PPh2-o)-κ2-P,P}(OOCPh)] (6) and fully characterized by mass spectrometry, NMR data, and single-crystal X-ray analysis. Density functional theory-based calculations further provided a quantitative understanding of the energetics of a series of H atom transfer steps occurring in the catalytic cycle.

Among the various thermoelectric oxide materials, perovskites offer more flexibility to adjust the interdependent thermoelectric parameters for an improved thermoelectric performance. In this work, we investigated the effect of A-site cation deficiency and Sr-substitution on the thermoelectric properties of the LaCoO3 ceramic synthesized via a solid-state reaction. A rhombohedral crystal structure with the R3̄c space group was revealed through Rietveld refinement of the XRD data. XPS analysis further confirmed the presence of multiple oxidation states of Co, and the mechanism of charge transport involving these multivalent cations was described using the small polaron hopping model. The La deficiency and Sr-substitution were found to increase the electrical conductivity in the LCO1 and LCO2 compositions, which resulted in a significant increase in the thermoelectric power factor. It was found that the increase in electrical conductivity of LCO1 and LCO2 was caused by a substantial reduction in the activation energy barrier for small polaron hopping conduction and an increase in fractional polaron concentration. The maximum power factor value of 78 µW m-1 K-2 was observed for the LCO2 composition at 403 K.

Rice, a staple food crop worldwide, suffers devastating yield losses as a result of blast disease caused by Magnaporthe oryzae Cav. The adverse effects of chemicals on the environment are rising concerns for sustainable and eco-friendly approaches. The use of antagonistic microbes for the management of rice blast appears to be a sustainable solution to this challenge. Herein, we isolated 20 Streptomyces strains from rice rhizosphere, among which the isolate STR-2 exhibited maximum inhibition of mycelial growth of M. oryzae accounting for 50% reduction over control. The isolate STR-2 was identified as S. chrestomyceticus through 16S rRNA gene sequencing. In vitro tests demonstrated its ability to produce antifungal and bioactive compounds and also synthesize siderophore, IAA, and phosphate-solubilizing agents, thereby promoting plant growth upon inoculation on rice seeds. GC-MS analysis showed the presence of volatiles, antifungal, antimicrobial, and antioxidant compounds with different retention times. The crude antibiotic extract of 0.5% of S. chrestomyceticus STR-2 reduced the mycelial growth of M. oryzae over the control. Application of talc-based formulation of Streptomyces chrestomyceticus STR-2 resulted in the least disease incidence (15.89%) with the highest disease reduction of 65.26% over untreated control under field condition. These findings indicate the potential of S. chrestomyceticus as a potential bio-inoculant against rice blast disease.

The present study was conducted to understand the key ecological and biological questions of conservation importance in Drepanostachyum falcatum which aimed to map potential distribution in the western Himalayas and decipher spatial genetic structure. Eco-distribution maps were generated through ecological niche modelling using the Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) algorithm implemented with 228 geocoordinates of species presence and 12 bioclimatic variables. Concomitantly, 26 natural populations in the western Himalayas were genetically analysed using ten genomic sequence-tagged microsatellite (STMS) markers. Model-derived distribution was adequately supported with appropriate statistical measures, such as area under the 'receiver operating characteristics (ROC)' curve (AUC; 0.917 ± 0.034)", Kappa (K; 0.418), normalized mutual information (NMI; 0.673) and true skill statistic (TSS; 0.715). Further, Jackknife test and response curves showed that the precipitation (pre- and post-monsoon) and temperature (average throughout the year and pre-monsoon) maximize the probabilistic distribution of D. falcatum. We recorded a wide and abundant (4096.86 km2) distribution of D. falcatum in the western Himalayas with maximum occurrence at 1500 to 2500 m asl. Furthermore, marker analysis exemplified high gene diversity with low genetic differentiation in D. falcatum. Relatively, the populations of Uttarakhand are more genetically diverse than Himachal Pradesh, whereas within the Uttarakhand, the Garhwal region captured a higher allelic diversity than Kumaon. Clustering and structure analysis indicated two major gene pools, where genetic admixing appeared to be controlled by long-distance gene flow, horizontal geographical distance, aspect, and precipitation. Both the species distribution map and population genetic structure derived herein may serve as valuable resources for conservation and management of Himalayan hill bamboos.

The reactions of amide functionalized bisphosphine o-Ph2PC6H4C(O)N(H)C6H4PPh2-o (1) with platinum salts are described. Treatment of 1 with [Pt(COD)Cl2] yielded a chelate complex, [PtCl2{o-Ph2PC6H4C(O)N(H)C6H4PPh2-o}κ2-P,P] (2), which on subsequent treatment with LiHMDS formed a novel 1,2-azaphospholene-phosphine complex [Pt(C6H5)Cl{o-C6H4{C(O)N(o-PPh2(C6H4))P(Ph)}}κ2-P,P] (3) involving a tandem P-C bond cleavage and P-N bond formation. The same complex 3 on passing dry HCl gas afforded the dichloro complex [PtCl2{o-C6H4{C(O)N(o-PPh2(C6H4))P(Ph)}}κ2-P,P] (5). Complex 2 upon refluxing in toluene or treatment of 1 with [Pt(COD)Cl2] in the presence of a base at room temperature resulted in the pincer complex [PtCl{o-Ph2PC6H4C(O)N(C6H4PPh2-o)}κ3-P,N,P] (4). Reaction of 1 with [Pt(COD)ClMe] at room temperature also afforded the pincer complex [PtMe{o-Ph2PC6H4C(O)N(C6H4PPh2-o)}κ3-P,N,P] (6). Mechanistic studies on 1,2-azaphospholene formation showed the reductive elimination of LiCl to form a phosphonium salt that readily adds one of the P-C bonds oxidatively to the in situ generated Pt0 species to form a chelate complex 3. The analogous palladium complex [PdCl2{o-C6H4{C(O)N(o-PPh2(C6H4))P(Ph)}}κ2-P,P] (7) showed excellent catalytic activity toward N-alkylation of amines with alcohols with a very low catalyst loading (0.05 mol %), and the methodology is very efficient toward the gram-scale synthesis of many N-alkylated amines.

Titanium dioxide nanoparticles exhibit good anticancer and antibacterial activities. They are known to be environmentally friendly, stable, less toxic, and have excellent biocompatibility nature. Due to these properties, they are well suited for biological applications particularly in biomedical applications such as drug delivery and cancer therapy. In this research article, three medicinal herbs namely, Plectranthus amboinicus (Karpooravalli), Phyllanthus niruri (Keezhanelli), and Euphorbia hirta (Amman Pacharisi), were used to modify the surface of the TiO2 nanoparticles. The synthesized nanoparticles were subjected to various characterization techniques. The samples are then subjected to MTT assay to determine cell viability. KB oral cancer cells are used for the determination of the anticancer nature of the pure and bio modified nanoparticles. It is observed that Plectranthus amboinicus-Phyllanthus niruri modified TiO2 nanoparticles exhibit excellent anticancer activities among other bio modified and pure samples. The samples are then examined for antibacterial activities against three Gram-negative bacterial strains namely, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and two Gram-positive bacterial strains namely, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus mutans, respectively. Among the modified and pure samples, Plectranthus amboinicus showed good antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. In the Flow cytometry analysis, the generation of p53 protein expression from Plectranthus amboinicus-Phyllanthus niruri modified TiO2 nano herbal particles shows the anti-cancerous nature of the sample. Then to determine the toxic nature of the Plectranthus amboinicus-Phyllanthus niruri modified TiO2 nano herbal particles against normal cells, the NPs were subjected to MTT assay against normal L929 cells, and it was found to be safer and less toxic towards the normal cells.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the cost-effectiveness of wireless spinal cord stimulation (Wireless SCS) with single stage "direct to permanent" implantation vs. screening with temporary electrodes and an external pulse generator followed by implantation of a system for long-term use (IPG SCS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We created a cost model that takes a 2019 United States (U.S.) payer perspective and is based on IPG SCS cost models for subjects with chronic back and/or leg pain. Our six-month decision tree includes the screening trial period (success ≥50% relief) and leads to various levels of pain relief with or without complications for IPG SCS and Wireless SCS and without complications for conventional medical management (CMM). Every three months in the follow-on 15-year Markov model (with costs and quality-adjusted life years discounted 3.5% annually), subjects remain stable or transition to deteriorated health or death. Subjects who fail SCS receive CMM. After 60 Markov cycles, a 100,000-sample simulation reveals the impact of maximum willingness-to-pay (WTP) from $10,000 to $100,000 per quality-adjusted life year on net monetary benefit (NMB). Sensitivity analyses considered the impact of the Wireless SCS screening success rate, Wireless SCS device cost, and IPG SCS device longevity. RESULTS: Compared with IPG SCS, Wireless SCS offers higher clinical effectiveness at a lower cost and a higher NMB for our WTP thresholds and is, thus, dominant. Wireless SCS is also cost-effective compared with CMM. Results remain robust with 1) Wireless SCS screening success rates as low as 85% (dominant), 2) the cost of the Wireless SCS devices as high as $55,000 (cost-effective), and 3) IPG SCS devices lasting 12 years (dominant). CONCLUSIONS: In this model, compared with IPG SCS or with CMM, Wireless SCS is a superior strategy.

Proteaceae, a largely southern hemisphere family consisting of 80 genera distributed in Australia and southern Africa as its centres of greatest diversity, also extends well in northern and southern America. Under this family, Grevillea robusta is a fast-growing species got popularity in farm and avenue plantations. Despite the ecological and economic importance, the species has not yet been investigated for its genetic improvement and genome-based studies. Only a few molecular markers are available for the species or its close relatives, which hinders  genomic and population genetics studies. Genetic markers have been intensively applied for the main strategies in breeding programs, especially for the economically important traits. Hence, it is of utmost priority to develop genomic database resources and species-specific markers for studying quantitative genetics in G. robusta. Given this, the present study aimed to develop de novo genome sequencing, robust microsatellites markers, sequence annotation and their validation in different stands of G. robusta in northern India. Library preparation and sequencing were carried out using Illumina paired-end sequencing technology. Approximately, ten gigabases (Gb) sequence data with 70.87 million raw reads assembled into 425,923 contigs (read mapped to 76.48%) comprising 455 Mb genome size (23 × coverage) generated through genome skimming approach. In total, 9421 simple sequence repeat (SSR) primer pairs were successfully designed from 13,335 microsatellite repeats. Afterward, a subset of 161 primer pairs was randomly selected, synthesized and validated. All the tested primers showed successful amplification but only 13 showed polymorphisms. The polymorphic SSRs were further used to estimate the measures of genetic diversity in 12 genotypes each from the states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Importantly, the average number of alleles (Na), observed heterozygosity (Ho), expected heterozygosity (He), and the polymorphism information content (PIC) were recorded as 2.69, 0.356, 0.557 and 0.388, respectively. The availability of sequence information and newly developed SSR markers could potentially be used in various genetic analyses and improvements through molecular breeding strategies for G. robusta. To generate hydrogen, which is a clean energy carrier, a combination of electrolysis and renewable energy sources is desirable. In particular, for both the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in electrolysis, it is necessary to develop nonprecious, efficient, and durable catalysts. A robust nonprecious copper-iron (CuFe) bimetallic composite is reported that can be used as a highly efficient bifunctional catalyst for overall water splitting in an alkaline medium. The catalyst exhibits outstanding OER and HER activity, and very low OER and HER overpotentials (218 and 158 mV, respectively) are necessary to attain a current density of 10 mA cm-2 . When used in a two-electrode water electrolyzer system for overall water splitting, it not only achieves high durability (even at a very high current density of 100 mA cm-2 ) but also reduces the potential required to split water into oxygen and hydrogen at 10 mA cm-2 to 1.64 V for 100 h of continuous operation.

Gold(I) complexes of sterically demanding phosphines derived from 2,6-dibenzhydryl-4-methylphenyl core viz: 2,6-dibenzhydryl-N,N-bis((diphenylphosphane)-methyl)-4-methylaniline (1), (2,6-dibenzhydryl-4-methylphenyl)-diphenylphosphane (2), N-(2,6-dibenzhydryl-4-methylphenyl)-1,1-diphenylphosphanamine (3), and (2,6-dibenzhydryl-4-methylphenoxy)-diphenylphosphane (4) are described. The reaction of 1 with 2 equiv of [AuCl(SMe2)] in dichloromethane yielded [{AuCl}2{Ar*N(CH2PPh2)2}] (5), which on further treatment with 2 equiv of AgSbF6 and 1 equiv of 1 produced 12-membered dimeric complex [Au2{µ-(Ar*N(CH2PPh2)2)2}][(SbF6)2] (6). A similar reaction of 5 with AgSbF6 in CH3CN afforded [{Au(NCCH3)}2{Ar*N(CH2PPh2)2}][(SbF6)2] (7). Equimolar reactions of bulky phosphines 2, 3, and 4 with [AuCl(SMe2)] resulted in [AuCl(PPh2Ar*)] (8), [AuCl(PPh2NHAr*)] (9), and [AuCl(PPh2OAr*)] (10). Complexes 9 and 10 on treatment with AgSbF6 in CH3CN produced the cationic complexes [Au(NCCH3)(PPh2NHAr*)][(SbF6)] (11) and [Au(NCCH3)(PPh2OAr*)][(SbF6)] (12), respectively. The molecular structure of complex 6 revealed the presence of a strong intramolecular aurophilic interaction with a Au···Au distance of 2.9720(4) Å. Careful analysis of molecular structure of 5 revealed the presence of rare Au···H-C (sp3) interactions between the gold(I) atom and one of the methylene protons of -NCH2PPh2 groups. The solution 1H NMR signals of the methylene protons of 5 showed a considerable downfield shift (∼1 ppm) compared to that of the free ligand indicating their interactions (Au···H) with the Au atom. Complexes 8 and 10 also showed Au···H interactions in their molecular structures. The existence of the Au···H interaction was studied by variable temperature 1H NMR data in the case of complex 5 and further evinced by the QTAIM analysis in complexes 5, 8, and 10.

BACKGROUND: Rowing exposes the femoral head and acetabulum to high levels of repetitive abutment motion and axial loading that may put elite athletes at an increased risk for developing early hip osteoarthritis. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: Do elite rowers demonstrate characteristic hip cartilage lesions on T2 MRI sequences compared with asymptomatic individuals who do not row? METHODS: This study included 20 asymptomatic rowers (mean age, 23 ± 3 years; nine females, 11 males) who had a minimum of 5 years of intensive (≥ 12 hours/week) training. The recruiting of the rowers took place from the central German federal rowing base, which has inherent intense training and selection requirements to declare these athletes as "elite rowers." We investigated one hip per study participant. MRI was performed on a 3-T scanner. The protocol included standard sequences, a double-echo steady-state sequence, and a multiecho data image combination sequence with inline T2 calculation (= the decay of transverse magnetization arising from molecular interactions [T2] and inhomogeneities in the magnetic field resulting from tissue susceptibility-induced field distortions and variations in the magnet itself), which detects changes in water content and the disruption of collagen structure. Although extrinsic and intrinsic influences on the T2 values including diurnal effects, MR technic-derived variations, and anatomic-related regional disparities need to be taken into account, low T2 values well below 20 ms indicate cartilage degeneration. Cartilage was morphologically analyzed in the anterior, anterosuperior, superoanterior, superior, superoposterior, posterosuperior, and posterior regions of the hip and graded as follows: Grade 0 = normal; Grade 1 = signal changes; Grade 2 = cartilage abrasion; Grade 3 = cartilage loss. Labrum was classified as follows: Grade 0 = normal; Grade 1 = partial tear; Grade 2 = full-thickness tear; Grade 3 = labrum degeneration. The T2 measurement was done through a region of interest analysis. For reliability assessment, morphologic evaluation and T2 measurement were performed by two observers while one observer repeated his analysis with a time interval > 2 weeks. Intra- and interobserver reliability was determined using κ analysis and intraclass correlation coefficients. Control T2 data were derived from a previous study on 15 hips in 15 asymptomatic volunteers of similar ages (seven males and eight females) who were not competitive rowers with similar MR hardware and imaging sequences. RESULTS: Compared with the control group of asymptomatic volunteers who were not competitive rowers, we noted a high level of labrum and cartilage degeneration in the cohort of elite rowers. In the group of elite rowers, cartilage degeneration was noted in all hips. Regarding the acetabular cartilage, 271 zones could be evaluated. Of those, 44% (120 of 271) were graded normal, 6% (15 of 271) revealed signal alteration, 45% (122 of 271) demonstrated cartilage abrasion, and 5% (14 of 271) were noted to have full-thickness cartilage loss. Morphologic cartilage degeneration in the femoral head was less frequent. T2 values were lower than the control hips in all zones except for the posterior central acetabular zone (global T2 acetabular: 20 ± 6 ms, range, 9-36 ms, 95% confidence interval [CI], 19-21 ms versus 25 ± 5 ms, range, 14-44 ms, 95% CI, 24-25 ms, p < 0.001; global T2 femoral: 23 ± 7 ms, range, 9-38 ms, 95% CI, 22-24 ms versus 27 ± 5 ms, range, 17-45 ms, 95% CI, 26-28 ms, p < 0.001). The difference in T2 between the two study groups was superior in the peripheral zone of the anterosuperior region (16 ± 3 ms; range, 10-22 ms, 95% CI, 15-18 ms versus 26 ms ± 5 ms, range, 18-38 ms, 95% CI, 24-29 ms, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: We found signs of hip cartilage degeneration to a much greater degree in elite rowers than in asymptomatic controls. Although causation cannot be inferred, this is concerning, and future investigations including controlled longitudinal studies both on elite and nonelite athletes with sufficient cohort size are warranted to clarify our findings. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Multimodal analgesia entrains the use of drugs in perioperative period producing adequate pain relief without affecting the quality of recovery by decreasing drug-related adverse effects. Systemic lignocaine has effective analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-hyperalgesic properties and improves the quality of recovery after surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ninety women scheduled for elective transabdominal hysterectomy under general anesthesia were randomized to receive infusion of lignocaine (1.5 mg/kg over 15 min followed by a 2 mg/kg/h infusion until the end of surgery) (Group 1) or normal saline (10 mL over 15 min followed by infusion 1 mL/kg/h till end of surgery) (Group 2). Standard anesthesia techniques were used in both the groups. The patients received inj. tramadol for postoperative analgesia. Perioperative hemodynamics, extubation variables, postoperative analgesic requirement, and quality of recovery score were evaluated. RESULTS: Hemodynamics were maintained in both the groups. Time for extubation was also similar. Demand for first postoperative analgesic was after 70.8 ± 70.4 min (Group 1) and 40.7 ± 30.0 min (Group 2) (P = 0.006). Total tramadol usage was 477.0 ± 133.2 mg (Group 1) and 560.0 ± 115.0 mg (Group 2) (P < 0.001). Return of bowel function was faster in Group 2 compared with Group 1 (37.1 ± 5 vs 41.8 ± 7.4 h, P < 0.001). The median (interquartile range) recovery score (QoR-40) was 184 (178-191) in Group 1 and 178 (171-180) in Group 2 (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Perioperative use of intravenous infusion of lignocaine is associated with decreased analgesic requirement postoperatively, and improved quality of recovery score signifying greater patient satisfaction.

CuCo2 O4 films with different morphologies of either mesoporous nanosheets, cubic, compact-granular, or agglomerated embossing structures are fabricated via a hydrothermal growth technique using various solvents, and their bifunctional activities, electrochemical energy storage and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for water splitting catalysis in strong alkaline KOH media, are investigated. It is observed that the solvents play an important role in setting the surface morphology and size of the crystallites by controlling nucleation and growth rate. An optimized mesoporous CuCo2 O4 nanosheet electrode shows a high specific capacitance of 1658 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 with excellent restoring capability of ≈99% at 2 A g-1 and superior energy density of 132.64 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 0.72 kW kg-1 . The CuCo2 O4 electrode also exhibits excellent endurance performance with capacity retention of 90% and coulombic efficiency of ≈99% after 5000 charge/discharge cycles. The best OER activity is obtained from the CuCo2 O4 nanosheet sample with the lowest overpotential of ≈290 mV at 20 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 117 mV dec-1 . The superior bifunctional electrochemical activity of the mesoporous CuCo2 O4 nanosheet is a result of electrochemically favorable 2D morphology, which leads to the formation of a very large electrochemically active surface area.

The oxygen-evolution reaction (OER) is critical in electrochemical water splitting and requires an efficient, sustainable, and cheap catalyst for successful practical applications. A common development strategy for OER catalysts is to search for facile routes for the synthesis of new catalytic materials with optimized chemical compositions and structures. Here, nickel hydroxide Ni(OH)2 2D nanosheets pillared with 0D polyoxovanadate (POV) nanoclusters as an OER catalyst that can operate in alkaline media are reported. The intercalation of POV nanoclusters into Ni(OH)2 induces the formation of a nanoporous layer-by-layer stacking architecture of 2D Ni(OH)2 nanosheets and 0D POV with a tunable chemical composition. The nanohybrid catalysts remarkably enhance the OER activity of pristine Ni(OH)2 . The present findings demonstrate that the intercalation of 0D POV nanoclusters into Ni(OH)2 is effective for improving water oxidation catalysis and represents a potential method to synthesize novel, porous hydroxide-based nanohybrid materials with superior electrochemical activities.

Hepatocyte to biliary transdifferentiation has been documented in various models of bile duct injury. In this process, mature hepatocytes transform into mature biliary epithelial cells by acquiring biliary phenotypic markers. Several signaling pathways including PI3 kinase, Notch, Hes1, Sox9, and Hippo are shown to be involved in the process. However, whether Oct4 is involved in hepatocyte to biliary transdifferentiation is unknown. We investigated the role of Oct4 in hepatocyte to biliary transdifferentiation utilizing an in vitro organoid culture system as a model of transdifferentiation. Oct4 was inhibited using adenovirus containing Oct4 shRNA. Hepatocyte-specific HNF-4α and biliary-specific HNF-1ß and CK19 expression were assessed to gauge the extent of transdifferentiation. Oct4 was induced during hepatocyte to biliary transdifferentiation. Oct4 inhibition significantly downregulated the appearance of biliary cells from hepatocytes. This was accompanied by a significant downregulation of signaling pathways including Notch, Sox9, and Hippo. Our findings suggest that Oct4 is crucial for hepatocyte to biliary transdifferentiation and maturation and that it acts upstream of Notch, Sox9, and Hippo signaling in this model. This finding identifies new signaling through Oct4 in plasticity between hepatocytes and biliary epithelial cells, which can be potentially utilized to identify new strategies in chronic biliary diseases.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the diagnostic accuracy of a high-resolution, three-dimensional (3D) double-echo steady-state (DESS) sequence with radial imaging at 3 Tesla (T) for evaluating cartilage and labral alterations in the hip. METHODS: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data obtained at 3 T, including radially reformatted DESS images and intraoperative data of 45 patients (mean age 42 ± 13.7 years) who underwent hip arthroscopy, were compared. The acetabular cartilage and labrum of the upper hemisphere of the acetabulum and the central femoral head cartilage were evaluated. Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and negative and positive predictive values were determined. RESULTS: Sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of the DESS technique were 96.7%, 75% and 93.7% for detecting cartilage lesions and 98%, 76.2% and 95.9% for detecting labral lesions. The positive and negative predictive values for detecting or ruling out cartilage lesions were 96% and 78.9%. For labral lesions, the positive and negative predictive values were 97.5% and 80%. CONCLUSION: A high-resolution, 3D DESS technique with radial imaging at 3 T demonstrated high accuracy for detecting hip cartilage and labral lesions with excellent interobserver agreement and moderate correlation between MRI and intraoperative assessment. KEY POINTS: • High-resolution, 3D DESS with radial imaging allows accurate cartilage and labrum evaluation. • DESS demonstrated high sensitivity, specificity, accuracy for detecting cartilage and labral lesions. • Highly accurate sequence may influence treatment decisions in patients with hip pain.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a prevalent mental health disorder and the fourth leading cause of disability in the world as per the World Health Organization. Use of antidepressants can lead to adverse drug events (ADEs), defined as any injury resulting from medication use. This study aimed to examine changes in hospital admissions due to antidepressant-related ADEs (ArADEs) among different socio-demographic groups and changes in lengths of stay (LOS) and hospital charges in ArADE admissions from 2001 to 2011. METHODS: The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project database was used. ArADE admissions in different socio-demographic groups were examined including characteristics such as age, gender, rural/urban, and income. LOS and hospital charges for ArADE cases were compared between 2001 and 2011. Chi-square test and t test were used for statistical analyses. RESULTS: There were 17,375 and 20,588 ArADE related admissions in 2001 and 2011, respectively. There was a 17.6% increase among the group of 18 to 64 years old and a 64.8% increase among the group of 65 years or older while the other age groups experienced decreased admission rates. Males and females had similar increases. Patients from the lower income areas experienced a two-fold increase while those from the higher income areas experienced a decrease. The mean LOS for all ArADE related admissions increased from 2.18 to 2.81 days and mean hospital charges increased from $8,456.2 to $21,572.5. CONCLUSIONS: There was an increase in ArADE hospital admissions. The greater increase in ArADE admissions among elderly, urban or low-income patients should be noted and addressed by practitioners and policy makers. The large increase in hospital charges needs further research.
