RESUMO

Cu(II)-catalyzed peracetic acid (PAA) processes have shown significant potential to remove contaminants in water treatment. Nevertheless, the role of coexistent H2O2 in the transformation from Cu(II) to Cu(I) remained contentious. Herein, with the Cu(II)/PAA process as an example, the respective roles of PAA and H2O2 on the Cu(II)/Cu(I) cycling were comprehensively investigated over the pH range of 7.0-10.5. Contrary to previous studies, it was surprisingly found that the coexistent deprotonated H2O2 (HO2-), instead of PAA, was crucial for accelerating the transformation from Cu(II) to Cu(I) (kHO2-/Cu(II) = (0.17-1) × 106 M-1 s-1, kPAA/Cu(II) < 2.33 ± 0.3 M-1 s-1). Subsequently, the formed Cu(I) preferentially reacted with PAA (kPAA/Cu(I) = (5.84 ± 0.17) × 102 M-1 s-1), rather than H2O2 (kH2O2/Cu(I) = (5.00 ± 0.2) × 101 M-1 s-1), generating reactive species to oxidize organic contaminants. With naproxen as the target pollutant, the proposed synergistic role of H2O2 and PAA was found to be highly dependent on the solution pH with weakly alkaline conditions being more conducive to naproxen degradation. Overall, this study systematically investigated the overlooked but crucial role of coexistent H2O2 in the Cu(II)/PAA process, which might provide valuable insights for better understanding the underlying mechanism in Cu-catalyzed PAA processes.

RESUMO

Nitric oxide (NO) is one of the major air pollutants that may cause ecological imbalance and severe human disease. However, the removal of NO faces challenges of low efficiency, high energy consumption, and production of toxic NO2 byproducts. Herein, we report an efficient *OOH intermediate-involved NO oxidation route with high NO3- selectivity via a gas phase photo-Fenton system. Fe single atoms (Fe SAs)-anchored NH2-UiO-66(Zr) (Fe SAs@NU) was synthesized. The five-coordinated Fe SAs undergo a transient structure reconstitution during the photo-Fenton process, which enables a novel heterolytic cleavage pathway of H2O2 to derive specific ·OOH/·O2- radicals as reactive oxygen species. Therefore, a high NO (550 parts per billion) removal rate of 81% (NO3- selectivity up to 99%) is achieved under visible-light irradiation (>420 nm). This study provides new insight for the high-performance photo-Fenton process via a transient structure reconstitution pathway for the removal of gas phase NOx pollutants.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported that high fasting plasma glucose (FPG), even that within the normal range, is associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Nevertheless, these findings are limited to specific populations. Thus, studies in the general population are imperative. METHODS: This study included two cohorts comprising 204 640 individuals who underwent physical examinations at the Rich Healthcare Group present at 32 locations in 11 cities of China from 2010 to 2016 and 15 464 individuals who underwent physical tests at the Murakami Memorial Hospital in Japan. Cox regression, restricted cubic spline (RCS), Kaplan-Meier (KM) curves, and subgroup analysis were used to determine the relationship between FPG and T2D. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to evaluate the predictive power of FPG for T2D. RESULTS: The mean age of the 220 104 participants (204 640 Chinese and 15 464 Japanese participants) was 41.8 years (41.7 years for the Chinese and 43.7 years for the Japanese participants). During follow-up, 2611 individuals developed T2D (2238 Chinese and 373 Japanese participants). The RCS demonstrated a J-shaped relationship between FPG and T2D risk, with inflexion points of 4.5 and 5.2 for the Chinese and Japanese populations, respectively. Multivariate-adjusted hazard ratio (HR) was 7.75 for FPG and T2D risk after the inflexion point (7.3 for Chinese and 21.13 for Japanese participants). CONCLUSIONS: In general Chinese and Japanese populations, the normal baseline FPG range showed a J-shaped relationship with the risk of T2D. Baseline FPG levels help identify individuals at high risk of T2D and may enable early primary prevention to improve their outcomes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) is an autoimmune disorder. It has discriminable appearance. This study was conducted to dig the clinical significance of demographic characteristics and ophthalmologic diagram features in TAO diagnosis and stage/severity evaluation. RESULTS: We included 320 males and 633 females, with an average age of 41.75 ± 13.75. A majority of TAO patients had hyperthyroidism, and most of them were in the inactive stage and at the moderate level. The thyroid function type, stage and severity were closely associated with hypopsia, eyelid congestion, conjunctival congestion, corneal ulcer, ocular motility disorder, best corrected visual acuity, and extraocular muscle thickening. Using these features, we established different logistic regression models to predict thyroid function subtypes, abnormal thyroid function, stage, and severity, in which the AUC of the ROC curve and accuracies were satisfactory. CONCLUSION: Together, TAO subtype, stage and severity can be diagnosed by auxiliary references including demographic factors, symptoms from complains, and image features. These non-invasive indices can be applied in a timely manner in clinical estimating TAO status.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Studies have reported that lipid-derived indicators are associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D) in various populations; however, it is unclear which lipid-derived indicators could effectively predict T2D risk. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the association between four lipid-derived indicators and T2D risk. METHODS: This was a post-hoc analysis from a large cohort that included data from 114,700 Chinese individuals aged 20 years and older from 11 cities and 32 sites. The association between four lipid-derived indicators and T2D risk was determined using Kaplan-Meier (KM) survival curves, Cox regression, and restricted cubic spline analyses. This study used receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves for assessing the ability of four lipid-derived indicators to accurately predict the development of T2D during follow-up. RESULTS: This study included a total of 114,700 participants, with a mean age of 44.15. These individuals were followed up for 3.1 years, of which 2668 participants developed T2D. ROC curve analysis showed that TyG was the most robust predictor of 3-year [aera under the ROC (AUC) = 0.77, 95% CI: 0.768, 0.772] and 5-year T2D risk (AUC = 0.763, 95% CI: 0.760, 0.765). In addition, sensitivity analysis showed an association between TyG and an increased incidence of T2D. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that TyG was a superior for predicting the risk of developing T2D in the general Chinese population.

RESUMO

Tin-based perovskites are promising for realizing lead-free perovskite solar cells; however, there remains a significant challenge to achieving high-performance tin-based perovskite solar cells. In particular, the device fill factor was much lower than that of other photovoltaic cells. Therefore, understanding how the fill factor was influenced by device physical mechanisms is meaningful. In this study, we reported a method to improve the device fill factor using a thin cesium iodide layer modification in tin-based perovskite cells. With the thin passivation layer, a high-quality perovskite film with larger crystals and lower charge carrier densities was obtained. As a result, the series resistance of devices was decreased; the shunt resistance of devices was increased; and the non-radiative recombination of devices was suppressed. Consequently, the fill factor, and the device efficiency and stability were greatly enhanced. The champion tin-based perovskite cells showed a fill factor of 63%, an efficiency of 6.1% and excellent stability. Our study reveals that, with a moderate thin layer modification strategy, the long-term stability of tin-based PSCs can be developed.

RESUMO

The power conversion efficiency of modern perovskite solar cells has surpassed that of commercial photovoltaic technology, showing great potential for commercial applications. However, the current high-performance perovskite solar cells all contain toxic lead elements, blocking their progress toward industrialization. Lead-free tin-based perovskite solar cells have attracted tremendous research interest, and more than 14% power conversion efficiency has been achieved. In tin-based perovskite, Sn2+ is easily oxidized to Sn4+ in air. During this process, two additional electrons are introduced to form a heavy p-type doping perovskite layer, necessitating the production of hole transport materials different from that of lead-based perovskite devices or organic solar cells. In this review, for the first time, we summarize the hole transport materials used in the development of tin-based perovskite solar cells, describe the impact of different hole transport materials on the performance of tin-based perovskite solar cell devices, and summarize the recent progress of hole transport materials. Lastly, the development direction of lead-free tin-based perovskite devices in terms of hole transport materials is discussed based on their current development status. This comprehensive review contributes to the development of efficient, stable, and environmentally friendly tin-based perovskite devices and provides guidance for the hole transport layer material design.

RESUMO

The human social and behavioral activities play significant roles in the spread of COVID-19. Social-distancing centered non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) are the best strategies to curb the spread of COVID-19 prior to an effective pharmaceutical or vaccine solution. This study investigates various social-distancing measures' impact on the spread of COVID-19 using advanced global and novel local geospatial techniques. Social distancing measures are acquired through website analysis, document text analysis, and other big data extraction strategies. A spatial panel regression model and a newly proposed geographically weighted panel regression model are applied to investigate the global and local relationships between the spread of COVID-19 and the various social distancing measures. Results from the combined global and local analyses confirm the effectiveness of NPI strategies to curb the spread of COVID-19. While global level strategies allow a nation to implement social distancing measures immediately at the beginning to minimize the impact of the disease, local level strategies fine tune such measures based on different times and places to provide targeted implementation to balance conflicting demands during the pandemic. The local level analysis further suggests that implementing different NPI strategies in different locations might allow us to battle unknown global pandemic more efficiently.

RESUMO

Radon (Rn), a ubiquitous radioactive noble gas, is the main source of natural radiation to human and one of the major culprits for lung cancer. Reducing ambient Rn concentration by porous materials is considered as the most feasible and energy-saving option to lower this risk, but the in-depth Rn removal under ambient conditions remains an unresolved challenge, mainly due to the weak van der Waals (vdW) interaction between inert Rn and adsorbents and the extremely low partial pressure (<1.8 × 10-14 bar, <106 Bq/m3) of Rn in air. Adsorbents having either favorable adsorption thermodynamics or feasible diffusion kinetics perform poorly in in-depth Rn removal. Herein, we report the discovery of a metal-organic framework (ZIF-7-Im) for efficient Rn capture guided by computational screening and modeling. The size-matched pores in ZIF-7-Im abide by the thermodynamically favorable principle and the exquisitely engineered quasi-open apertures allow for feasible kinetics with little sacrifice of sorption thermodynamics. The as-prepared material can reduce the Rn concentration from hazardous levels to that below the detection limit of the Rn detector under ambient conditions, with an improvement of at least two orders of amplitude on the removal depth compared to the currently best-performing and only commercialized material activated charcoal.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Fuzi lipid-soluble alkaloids (FLA) is the main bioactive components extracted from the traditional Chinese medicine Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata ("Fuzi" in Chinese), which has promising analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. However, the effects and the underlying mechanisms of FLA on rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have not been studied. The present study aimed to explore the anti-arthritic effects of FLA and its underlying mechanisms. METHODS: To standardize the FLA, UPLC-HR-MS was used for quantitative and qualitative analysis of the representative alkaloids. Cell viability was measured by MTT. The anti-inflammatory activity of FLA was examined by analyzing the expression levels of inflammatory mediators such as TNF-α, IL-6, MMP-1, MMP-3, PGE2, and COX-2 using ELISA and RT-PCR analysis. The Annexin V-FITC/PI double staining method was used to detect the apoptosis of HFLS-RA and analyzed by flow cytometry. Western blot analysis was used to analyze the expression of NF-κB, MAPKs and mitochondrial apoptosis pathway related proteins. RESULTS: FLA had a significant inhibitory effect on the proliferation of HFLS-RA induced by IL-1ß, which was accompanied by decreased expression levels of TNF-α, IL-6, MMP-1, MMP-3, COX-2 and PGE2. Remarkably, FLA inhibited the activation of NF-κB and MAPKs signaling pathways in IL-1ß-induced HFLS-RA, as well as inducing HFLS-RA apoptosis through the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway. CONCLUSIONS: FLA inhibited the expression and synthesis of inflammatory mediators by inhibiting the activation of NF-κB and MAPKs signaling pathways in HFLS-RA, and induced apoptosis of HFLS-RA via the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway.

RESUMO

Osteoporosis has a high incidence and a low detection rate. If it is not detected in time, it will cause osteoporotic fracture and other serious consequences. This study showed that the attenuation values of vertebrae on chest CT could be used for opportunistic screening of osteoporosis. This will be beneficial to improve the detection rate of osteoporosis and reduce the incidence of adverse events caused by osteoporosis. INTRODUCTION: To explore the value of the attenuation values of all thoracic vertebrae and the first lumbar vertebra measured by artificial intelligence on non-enhanced chest CT to do osteoporosis screening. METHODS: On base of images of chest CT, using artificial intelligence (AI) to measure the attenuation values (HU) of all thoracic and the first vertebrae of patients who underwent CT examination for lung cancer screening and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) examination during the same period. The patients were divided into three groups: normal group, osteopenia group, and osteoporosis group according to the results of DXA. Clinical baseline data and attenuation values were compared among the three groups. The correlation between attenuation values and BMD values was analyzed, and the predictive ability and diagnostic efficacy of attenuation values of thoracic and first lumbar vertebrae on osteopenia or osteoporosis risk were further evaluated. RESULTS: CT values of each thoracic vertebrae and the first lumbar vertebrae decreased with age, especially in menopausal women and presented high predictive ability and diagnostic efficacy for osteopenia or osteoporosis. After clinical data correction, with every 10 HU increase of CT values, the risk of osteopenia or osteoporosis decreased by 32 ~ 44% and 61 ~ 80%, respectively. And the combined diagnostic efficacy of all thoracic vertebrae was higher than that of a single vertebra. The AUC of recognizing osteopenia or osteoporosis from normal group was 0.831and 0.972, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The routine chest CT with AI is of great value in opportunistic screening for osteopenia or osteoporosis, which can quickly screen the population at high risk of osteoporosis without increasing radiation dose, thus reducing the incidence of osteoporotic fracture.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Primary intraocular lymphoma (PIOL) is a rare malignancy with a poor prognosis, but its optimal therapy remains unclear. Herein, we aimed to analyze the epidemiology and survival outcomes of PIOL patients based on a population-based cancer registry in the United States. METHODS: Patients diagnosed with PIOL between 1992 and 2018 were identified from the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results program. The patients were divided into two groups: those aged < 60 years and ≥ 60 years. We used the chi-squared test to analyze the differences between the two groups. Descriptive analyses were performed to analyze epidemiological characteristics and treatment. The likely prognostic factors were analyzed by Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox proportional hazards models. RESULTS: The overall incidence of PIOL was 0.23/1,000,000, which was steadily increasing from 1992 to 2018, with an annual percentage change of 2.35. In total, 326 patients (mean age, 66.1 years) with PIOL were included in this study, 72.1% were aged ≥ 60 years, 84.4% were White, and 60.4% were female. The most common pathological type was diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), but in patients aged < 60 years, extranodal marginal zone lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue was the most common. The disease-specific survival rates were 74.2% and 61.5% 5 and 10 years after diagnosis, respectively. Survival analysis found that surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy did not lead to better prognosis. CONCLUSIONS: PIOL is a rare disease with poor prognosis, and its incidence has been increasing for nearly 30 years. It usually affects people aged ≥ 60 years, and DLBCL is the most common pathological type of PIOL. Patients aged < 60 years and with non-DLBCL type have improved survival. Survival of PIOL has improved in recent years.

RESUMO

Hyperlipidemia (HLP) is a complex pathological condition results from lipid metabolism disorder, which is closely related to obesity, atherosclerosis and steatohepatitis. Emodin (EM), a natural anthraquinone, exhibits prominent hypolipidemic effects. However, its exact mechanism is still unclear. In this study, we successfully established hyperlipidemic zebrafish model induced by 4 % high-cholesterol diet (HCD) for 10 days and explored the anti-hyperlipidemic roles and underlying mechanisms of EM. The results indicated that EM attenuated the mortality and body mass index (BMI) of zebrafish with HLP, and ameliorated abnormal lipid levels involved in TC, TG, LDL-C and HDL-C levels. Besides, EM effectively reduced lipid accumulation in blood vessels and liver, alleviated hepatic histological damage, and inhibited vascular neutrophil inflammation. Finally, the mRNA expression of molecules related to lipid metabolism were studied by using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) to investigated the underlying mechanism. Further results found that treatment with EM up-regulated AMPKα, LDLR, ABCA1 and ABCG1, and down-regulated SREBP-2, PCSK9 and HMGCR expression. In conclusion, EM showed a prominent mitigative effect on lipid metabolism disorder in zebrafish larvae with HCD-stimulated HLP, which was associated with the enhancement of LDL-C uptake and reverse cholesterol transport, and inhibition of cholesterol synthesis.

RESUMO

Penthorum chinense Pursh (PCP), a medicinal and edible plant, is widely used in many clinical liver diseases. Oxidative stress and autophagy impairment play crucial roles in the pathophysiology of alcoholic liver disease (ALD). Therefore, the aim of this study was to elucidate the mechanism of PCP in attenuating ethanol-induced liver injury. The liver-specific transgenic zebrafish larvae (lfabp: EGFP) at three days post-fertilization (3 dpf) were treated with different concentrations of PCP (100, 50 and 25 µg/mL) for 48 h, after soaked in a 350 mM ethanol for 32 h. Whole-mount oil red O, H&E staining and biochemical kits were used to detect fatty liver function and fat accumulation, western blot (WB) and immunofluorescence were used to determine proteins expression, and RT-qPCR was used to further verify the related gene expression. PCP restored zebrafish liver function. Additionally, PCP (as dose-dependent) blocked the expression of cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1), the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and alleviated liver fat accumulation and oxidative damage. PCP exerted its hepatoprotective function by downregulating the expression of kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1), up-regulating the expression of nucleus factor-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) (transferring to the nucleus), and attenuating systemic oxidative stress. Furthermore, PCP reduced the expression of sequestosome 1 (p62/SQSTM1, p62), Atg13, and Beclin 1, up-regulating autophagy signaling pathway. Taken together, the molecular evidence that PCP protected the ethanol-induced hepatic oxidative stress and autophagy impairment through activating AMPK/p62/Nrf2/mTOR signaling axis.

RESUMO

A novel tapered fiber-optic radiation sensor (TFRS) based on cerium (Ce) and terbium (Tb) co-doped YAG scintillation crystals is demonstrated for the first time. Using the CO2 laser-heated method, a Ce/Tb:YAG crystal is well embedded into silica glass cladding without any cracks. The scintillation light emitted from the YAG scintillation crystal can be directly coupled into the derived silica optical fiber by the tapered region. The loss of the derived optical fiber is 0.14 dB/cm, which is one order of magnitude lower than the 1.59 dB/cm of the YAG crystal in the TFRS. Subsequently, strong photo- and radio-luminescence of Tb3+ (5D4→7F5) ions in TFRS are achieved under ultraviolet light and high-energy ray excitation, respectively. In particular, a prominent remote radiation response of the TFRS is presented under excitation by γ-rays through fusion splicing with multimode optical fibers. The response is approximately four times larger than that of a plastic scintillation fiber (BCF-12) sensor. Furthermore, the results possess high stability as well as a good linearity between the radiation dose rate and the response intensity. The TFRS in combination with an all-silica fiber system is a promising candidate for remote radiation detection.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Maternal folate status is linked with the risk of allergic disorders including atopic dermatitis (AD) in children, but findings remain inconclusive. We aim to assess the relationship between maternal folate status in early gestation and early-onset infant AD, based on a prospective mother-child cohort study. METHODS: Pregnant women were recruited at 12-14 weeks of gestation. Red blood cell folate (RBC folate) and serum folate concentrations were examined at enrollment. Periconceptional folic acid supplementation was investigated through a self-administered questionnaire. The primary outcome was AD incidence before 6 months of age, diagnosed according to Williams' criteria. Multivariate logistic regression was used to evaluate associations of maternal folate status with infant AD by adjusting parental and child covariates. RESULTS: In total, 107 (23.4%) of 458 infants developed AD before 6 months, with more male infants affected (P = .002). Higher maternal RBC folate levels (per 100 ng/mL) were associated with an increased risk of AD (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.16, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.04-1.31). An RBC folate level ≥620 ng/mL was associated with increased infant AD by 91% (aOR 1.91, 95% CI 1.09-3.36). However, associations were not observed for maternal serum folate at early gestation or periconceptional folic acid supplement intakes. CONCLUSIONS: We provide the first evidence that higher maternal RBC folate concentrations during early gestation are associated with increased early-onset infant AD. Our findings support the importance of maintaining appropriate folate levels during the periconceptional period to reduce the risk of AD in infants.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Aneurysm is a severe and fatal disease. This study aims to comprehensively identify the highly conservative co-expression modules and hub genes in the abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) and intracranial aneurysm (ICA) and facilitate the discovery of pathogenesis for aneurysm. METHODS: GSE57691, GSE122897, and GSE5180 microarray datasets were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. We selected highly conservative modules using weighted gene coexpression network analysis before performing the Gene Ontology, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway and Reactome enrichment analysis. The protein-protein interaction (PPI) network and the miRNA-hub genes network were constructed. Furtherly, we validated the preservation of hub genes in three other datasets. RESULTS: Two modules with 193 genes and 159 genes were identified as well preserved in AAA, TAA, and ICA. The enrichment analysis identified that these genes were involved in several biological processes such as positive regulation of cytosolic calcium ion concentration, hemostasis, and regulation of secretion by cells. Ten highly connected PPI networks were constructed, and 55 hub genes were identified. In the miRNA-hub genes network, CCR7 was the most connected gene, followed by TNF and CXCR4. The most connected miRNAs were hsa-mir-26b-5p and hsa-mir-335-5p. The hub gene module was proved to be preserved in all three datasets. CONCLUSIONS: Our study highlighted and validated two highly conservative co-expression modules and miRNA-hub genes network in three kinds of aneurysms, which may promote understanding of the aneurysm and provide potential therapeutic targets and biomarkers of aneurysm.

RESUMO

AIM: High-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) protein has been noticed particularly for its pivotal role in several pathologies. However, the relevance between HMGB1 and pathological progress in lung toxicity still remains unclear. In the study, we evaluated the effect of glycyrrhizic acid as an HMGB1 inhibitor on the early inflammation and late fibrosis in bleomycin-induced pulmonary toxicity in mice. METHODS: We established a bleomycin-induced pulmonary toxicity model to detect the relevance between HMGB1 and pathological changes in the early inflammatory and late fibrotic stages. RESULTS: We found that bleomycin-induced increase in inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-ß1, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, monocyte chemotactic protein (MCP)-1, and inflammatory lesions in lung tissue in the early stage of the model. However, markers of fibrosis such as transforming growth factor (TGF)-ß1 and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) were significantly elevated on day 7 after bleomycin instillation. Interestingly, HMGB1 also began to rise on day 7, rather than in the early inflammatory phase. However, early (from day 0 to 14 after bleomycin instillation) or late (from day 14 to 28) intervention with HMGB1 neutralizing antibody or glycyrrhizic acid alleviated inflammation and fibrosis through down-regulating the inflammatory signaling mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and fibrotic signaling Smad3 pathway. CONCLUSION: Our results suggested that HMGB1 mediates both inflammation and fibrosis in this model. The development of high-potency and low-toxicity HMGB1 inhibitors may be a class of potential drugs for the treatment of pulmonary fibrosis.

RESUMO

Thermohydrogen processing (THP) is an attractive technique that uses hydrogen as a temporary alloying element to modify the microstructure and properties of titanium alloys. However, the hydrogen diffusion behavior during THP is not fully understood owing to limited scope of methods to detect hydrogen distributions. Herein, we introduce neutron tomography as an efficient tool for three-dimensional (3D) hydrogen distribution analysis and quantitative determination in hydrogenated titanium alloys after THP. Thus motivated, a series of calibration samples of Ti-6Al-4V alloys with varying hydrogen contents were prepared and elaborated neutron tomography experiments and image data processing were performed. In this way, the 3D hydrogen distribution of the hydrogenated samples was obtained and the quantitative relationship between the hydrogen contents and the tomographic images was determined. To the best of our knowledge, this enabled for the first time the direct 3D visualization and characterization of the hydrogen distribution and concentration in titanium alloys after THP. It was deduced that hydrogen diffused from the surface to the interior of the hydrogenated sample in all directions during THP. In addition, the feasibility of neutron tomography for 3D quantitative hydrogen distribution was validated using continuous sample segmentation and the traditional heat conductivity method. Consequently, neutron tomography can be efficient for determining the hydrogen distribution and concentration in bulk metals and shed light on the hydrogen diffusion behavior and the mechanism of hydrogen-related materials and processing.
