RESUMO

AIMS: This study investigated mental health reactions to dealing with COVID-19 in a population of nurses working in a variety of settings. The study attempted to expand our current understanding of the psychological reactions unique to nurses working during the highly stressful period of the COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN: The study used an online questionnaire design. METHODS: Nurses were recruited using social media via an electronic link between July and September 2020. Of them, 112 nursing professionals completed the 66-item questionnaire. RESULTS: Significant findings included the presence of moderate or greater levels of anxiety (62%), depression (31%), and posttraumatic stress disorder (15%) and with significantly greater intrusive thoughts and memories for nurses who provided direct patient care than those who did not. Nurses with a prior history of anxiety or depression were found to be at greater risk for psychological distress. Results further highlighted concerns and fears related to coronavirus in both their daily personal and professional lives. CONCLUSION: The use of standard, commonly used, measures of psychological disorders allow for a more precise comparison among studies both for this population at the time of the survey and over a period of time. IMPACT: Suggestions for helping nursing professionals identify nurses at risk and improved ways to cope and deal with adverse psychological effects are discussed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Patient-reported outcome (PRO) data evaluating the physical and psychosocial impact of cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting) treatment are limited. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess, by means of PRO instruments, multidimensional aspects of satisfaction following cryolipolysis treatment of the flanks and abdomen. METHODS: This was a multinational, prospective, single-cohort, interventional study. The primary endpoint was the proportion of participants stating they were "satisfied" or "very satisfied" with treatment at 12 weeks post final treatment. Secondary endpoints included satisfaction categorized by treatment area, total number of treatment cycles, baseline BMI, and fat volume reduction measured by 3-dimensional photography at 12 weeks post final treatment. Exploratory endpoints assessed the physical and psychosocial impacts of treatment. Safety was monitored throughout the study. RESULTS: Of 112 participants who were treated, 74.1% were female. The mean age and BMI were 42.5 years and 24.9 kg/mg2, respectively. Of the 106 evaluable participants, 89.6% were "satisfied" or "very satisfied" with treatment results. Satisfaction was high regardless of body area(s), total number of treatment cycles, or baseline BMI. Mean [standard deviation] fat volume reduction was 264.8 [411.4] mL. Overall, 90.6% reported "noticeable" or "very noticeable" fat reduction, 89.6% were "likely" or "very likely" to treat additional areas, and 93.4% would recommend cryolipolysis to a friend. Twenty-four (21.4%) participants reported treatment-emergent adverse events; 23 (20.5%) reported these as adverse device effects. No serious device-related or unanticipated adverse effects occurred. CONCLUSIONS: Cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting) for fat reduction of the flanks and/or abdomen was well-tolerated and associated with high levels of satisfaction across multidimensional PROs.

RESUMO

This case report details a unique case of acute, reversible liver failure in a 12-year-old male with sickle cell anemia on chronic transfusion protocol and deferasirox chelation. There is substantial literature documenting deferasirox-induced renal injury, including Fanconi syndrome, but less documentation of hepatic toxicity and few reports of hepatic failure. The case highlights the importance of close monitoring of ferritin, bilirubin, and transaminases for patients on deferasirox.

RESUMO

Background: Studies of predominantly White participants show that cryolipolysis reduces subcutaneous fat in the arms and inner thighs, but none have specifically tested for similar outcomes in participants of Chinese descent. Objectives: This study assessed the safety and effectiveness of cryolipolysis treatment for noninvasive subcutaneous fat reduction of arms and inner thighs in participants of Chinese descent to assess equivalence to results seen in a prior study of White participants. Methods: Replicating a similar study design, participants of first- or second-generation Chinese descent underwent cryolipolysis treatment of arms and/or inner thighs. Effectiveness was assessed using pretreatment and posttreatment photographic review by blinded, independent experts, investigator-assessed caliper measurements, and participant satisfaction 12 weeks posttreatment. Safety was assessed throughout. Results: Among 50 enrolled participants, 48 completed the study. The majority of participants (97.9%) were female, with a mean age of 36.0 years and mean BMI of 24.16 kg/m2 (range 19.3-29.9 kg/m2). Overall, 76.4% and 70.0% of pretreatment photographs of arms and pairs of inner thighs, respectively, were correctly identified by at least 2 of 3 reviewers. The mean reduction from baseline in caliper-measured fat thickness was 6.5 mm for arms and 6.6 mm for inner thighs, and the majority of participants (>60%) were satisfied with the treatment. No adverse events were reported. Conclusions: Cryolipolysis is a well-tolerated, effective means of noninvasive fat reduction of arms and inner thighs in participants of Chinese descent. The results from this study show similar effectiveness and safety in Chinese participants compared with White participants treated in a prior study.

RESUMO

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is implicated in the pathophysiology of several inflammatory conditions. Olokizumab, a humanized anti-IL-6 monoclonal antibody, selectively blocks the final assembly of the IL-6 signaling complex. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase I dose-escalation study assessed the safety and tolerability of escalating single doses of olokizumab administered intravenously (iv) or subcutaneously (sc) to 67 healthy male volunteers. The pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and immunogenicity of olokizumab were also assessed. Olokizumab was tolerated at doses up to 3.0 mg/kg sc and 10.0 mg/kg iv; the maximum tolerated dose was not reached. No serious adverse events or withdrawals as a result of treatment-emergent adverse events were reported. Pharmacokinetic analysis showed that both maximum serum concentration and area under the concentration-time curve increased linearly with increasing dose. Mean terminal half-life was 31.5 days (standard deviation 12.4 days). The bioavailability of the sc doses ranged from 84.2% to 92.5%. Rapid decreases in C-reactive protein concentrations were observed, with no dose dependency.
