In aquatic ecosystems, light penetrating the sediment surface in shallow lakes may regulate the internal phosphorus (P) release through benthic primary production, which subsequently affects oxidation, pH levels, and alkaline phosphatase activity in the upper sediment. To study the effects of light exposure on the P dynamics at the sediment-water interface under eutrophic conditions, a two-month mesocosm experiment was conducted in twelve cement tanks (1000 L each). The tanks were equipped with Light-Emitting Diode (LED) lights, and surface sediments collected from eutrophic Lake Nanhu (China) were exposed to four different light intensities (0, 50, 100, 200 µmol m-2 s-1). The results revealed that: 1) Both the total phosphorus concentration and the phosphorus release flux from the sediment were lower in the light treatments (mean value, 0.59-0.71 mg L-1 and 0.00-0.01 mg m-2 d-1, respectively) than in the control treatment (0.77 mg L-1 and 0.01 mg m-2 d-1, respectively), indicating that light supplement could decrease the internal P release. 2) Benthic primary production promoted by light directly absorbed soluble reactive phosphorus and decreased the internal P release. The resulting improved production could also increase dissolved oxygen concentrations at the sediment-water interface, thus indirectly inhibiting internal P release. 3) The relative contributions of direct absorption and indirect inhibition on the internal P release ranged between 23% to 69% and 31% to 77% depending on the light intensity.

Left-sided and right-sided colon cancer (LSCC and RSCC) display different biological and clinical characteristics. However, the differences in their tumorigenesis and tumor microenvironment remain unclear. In this study, we profiled the proteomic landscapes of LSCC and RSCC with data-independent acquisition mass spectrometry (DIA-MS) using fresh tumor and adjacent normal tissues from 24 patients. A total of 7403 proteingroups were primarily identified with DIA-MS. After quality control, 7212 proteingroups were used for further analysis. Through comparing the difference in proteomic profiles between LSCC and RSCC samples, 2556 commonly and 1982 region-type-specific regulated proteingroups were characterized. During the development of LSCC and RSCC, metabolic, growth, cell division, cell adhesion, and migration pathways were found to be significantly dysregulated (P < 0.05), which was further confirmed by transcriptome data from TCGA. Compared to RSCC, most parts of the immune-related signatures, immune cell infiltration scores, and overall immune scores of LSCC were higher. The systematic elucidation of proteomic and transcriptomic profiles in this work improves our understanding of tumorigenesis and immune microenvironment characteristics of LSCC and RSCC.

RESUMO

Gout is a self-limiting inflammation disease triggered by deposition of monosodium urate with a variety of comorbidities. With the improvement of living standards, the global incidence of gout is increasing year by year, which seriously affects people's health. As an effective tool to study diseases, omics technology has been widely used to discover potential biomarkers and risk factors of gout. The identified variation sites or different-expressed products provide different dimensions of insights for the study of the pathogenesis and disease progression of gout. In this review, the application and research results of multi-omics technology in gout were analyzed and summarized through PubMed literature retrieval. Meanwhile, the recent research progress of multi-omics technology in the field of gout was reviewed to understand the specific changes of gout patients at different molecular levels, and to provide ideas and directions for further research on gout in the future.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the expressions of phosphatidylinositol proteoglycan 5 (GPC5) and tetrahydroxynonene (4-HNE) in the PCa tissue and their impact on tumor progression. METHODS: Using immunohistochemistry, we determined the expression rates of GPC5 and 4-HNE in 50 PCa and 50 BPH tissue samples, followed by comparative analysis of the correlation between their expressions and Gleason grading. RESULTS: The positive expression rate of GPC5 was 94.0% in the BPH tissue, remarkably higher than 86.7%, 66.7%, 75.0%, 55.6% and 33.3% in the PCa tissues of Gleason grades 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 (P = 0.001), with a negative correlation between the positive expression rate of GPC5 and the Gleason grade of tumors (P = 0.021). In contrast, the positive expression rate of 4-HNE was 4.0% in the BPH tissue, dramatically lower than 55.6%, 66.7%, 75.0%, 77.8% and 88.9% in the PCa tissues of Gleason grades 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 (P = 0.001), with a positive correlation between the expression rate of GPC5 and the Gleason grade of tumors (P = 0.001). After a follow-up of 10-30 months, the expression rates of GPC5 and 4-HNE in the tissues converted to castration-resistant PCa (CRPC) showed a statistically significant difference from those remaining unconverted (P = 0.001, P = 0.048). There was a negative correlation between the positive expression rate of 4-HNE and that of GPC5 in the PCa tissue (R = -0.983, P = 0.003). CONCLUSION: The low expression of GPC5 and high expression of 4-HNE are closely related to the pathological grade of PCa and its conversion to CRP, which may serve as new biological markers in assessing the malignancy and prognosis of tumors.

The major root system of cereals consists of crown roots (or adventitious roots), which are important for anchoring plants in the soil and for water and nutrient uptake. However, the molecular basis of crown root formation is largely unknown. Here, we isolated a rice (Oryza sativa) mutant with fewer crown roots, named lower crown root number1 (lcrn1). Map-based cloning revealed that lcrn1 is caused by a mutation of a putative transcription factor-coding gene, O. sativa SQUAMOSA PROMOTER BINDING PROTEIN-LIKE3 (OsSPL3). We demonstrate that the point mutation in lcrn1 perturbs theO. sativa microRNA156 (OsmiR156)-directed cleavage of OsSPL3 transcripts, resulting in the mutant phenotype. Chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing assays of OsSPL3 binding sites and RNA sequencing of differentially expressed transcripts in lcrn1 further identified potential direct targets of OsSPL3 in basal nodes, including a MADS-box transcription factor, OsMADS50. OsMADS50-overexpressing plants produced fewer crown roots, phenocopying lcrn1, while knocking out OsMADS50 in the lcrn1 background reversed this phenotype. We also show that OsSPL12, another OsmiR156 target gene, regulates OsMADS50 and crown root development. Taken together, our findings suggest a novel regulatory pathway in which the OsmiR156-OsSPL3/OsSPL12 module directly activates OsMADS50 in the node to regulate crown root development in rice.

Growth hormone receptor (GHR), the cognate receptor of growth hormone (GH), is a membrane bound receptor that belongs to the class I cytokine receptor superfamily. GH binding GHR induces cell differentiation and maturation, initiates the anabolism inside the cells and promotes cell proliferation. Recently, GHR has been reported to be associated with various types of cancer. However, the underlying mechanism of GHR in gastric cancer has not been defined. Our results showed that silence of GHR inhibited the growth of SGC-7901 and MGC-803 cells, and tumour development in mouse xenograft model. Flow cytometry showed that GHR knockout significantly stimulated gastric cancer cell apoptosis and caused G1 cell cycle arrest, which was also verified by Western blot that GHR deficiency induced the protein level of cleaved-PARP, a valuable marker of apoptosis. In addition, GHR deficiency inhibited the activation of PI3K/AKT signalling pathway. On the basis of the results, that GHR regulates gastric cancer cell growth and apoptosis through controlling G1 cell cycle progression via mediating PI3K/AKT signalling pathway. These findings provide a novel understanding for the role of GHR in gastric cancer.

Along with a steady increasing use of artificial nitrogen fertilizer, concerns have been raised about the effects that high nitrogen loading may have on ecosystems. Due to the toxicity of unionized ammonia (NH3), tolerance criteria have been proposed for ambient water management in many countries; however, these are mainly based on acute or chronic tests carried out under lab conditions run with purified water. Aiming at understanding the responses of organisms to natural exposure to high ammonia concentrations, a Viviparidae gastropod, Bellamya aeruginosa, was tested at three experimental scales: standard 96-h lab test, one-month cage test in 6 experimental ponds with continuous nitrogen inputs, and intensive investigation of the B. aeruginosa from these ponds in spring and winter. The results were: 1) 96-h LC50 in the standard lab test was 0.56 mg NH3-N/L and 343.3 mg TAN/L (total ammonia expressed as N, standardized at pH 7 and 20 â„ƒ). 2) In the one-month cage test, the survival rate was 97% when NH3-N was 0.61 mg/L (i.e., a higher concentration than the lab 96-h LC50) and the body size of the gastropods actually increased with increasing NH3-N concentrations. 3) In the winter-spring investigation, little effect of ammonia on the standing crops of gastropods was found, and the body size of the gastropods tended to increase with increasing ammonia concentrations (NH3-N concentration range of 0.05 ~ 2.06 mg/L). Thus, B. aeruginosa showed higher tolerance to ammonia exposure (NH3-N concentration < 0.81 mg/L) in the field than under laboratory conditions. Our study points to the necessity of considering the relevant scale when determining criteria for ammonia toxicity in water management.

Urban lakes are important natural assets but are exposed to multiple stressors from human activities. Submersed macrophytes, a key plant group that helps to maintain clear-water conditions in lakes, tend to be scarce in urban lakes, particularly when they are eutrophic or hypertrophic, and their loss is linked, in part, to impaired underwater light climate. We tested if enhancing the underwater light conditions using light-emitting diodes (LEDs) could restore submersed macrophytes in urban lakes. Twelve mesocosms (1000 L each) were each planted with tape grass (Vallisneria natans) and monitored over three months (22 August-7 November), using a control and three artificial light intensity treatments (10, 50, and 100 µmol m-2 s-1). Compared with the control, the high light treatment (100 µmol m-2 s-1) had higher leaf number, maximum leaf length, and average leaf length (3.9, 5.8, and 2.8 times, respectively). Shoot number, leaf number, leaf dry mass, root dry mass, and photosynthetic photon flux density in the high-light treatment were significantly greater than the control, but root length and phytoplankton chlorophyll a were not related to plant growth variables and were low in all treatments. Periphyton chlorophyll a increased significantly with the plant growth variables (i.e., shoot number, leaf number, and maximum leaf length) and was high in the light treatments but did not hamper the growth of the macrophytes. These results indicate that LED light supplementation enables the growth of V. natans under eutrophic conditions, at least in the absence of fish as in our experiment, and that the method may have potential as a restoration method in urban lakes. Lake-scale studies are needed, however, to fully evaluate LED light supplementation under natural conditions where other stressors (e.g., fish grazing) may need to be controlled for successful restoration of urban lakes.

With the rapid development of high-throughput sequencing technology and computer science, the amount of large omics data has increased exponentially, the advantages of multi-omics analysis have gradually emerged, and the application of artificial intelligence has become more and more extensive. In this review, we introduce the application progress of multi-omics data analysis and artificial intelligence in the medical field in recent years, and also show the cases and advantages of their combined application. Finally, we briefly explain the current challenges of multi-omics analysis and artificial intelligence in order to provide new research ideas for the medical industry and to promote the development and application of precision medicine.

BACKGROUND: To analyze the difference of the antibiotic resistance of Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) isolated from our hospital between 2014 and 2017. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated the patients with a confirmed diagnosis of A. baumannii infection at a tertiary general hospital in Guilin during the period between January 2014 and December 2017. The following clinical and demographic data were collected: age, gender, specimens, microbiology results, and antibiotic resistance patterns of isolates. Bacterial identification and susceptibility testing were performed using MALDI-TOF MS and VITEK 2 COMPACT systems. The results were analyzed according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) 2018 definitions. RESULTS: From 2014 to 2017, 1,294 strains of A. baumannii were detected, 41.5% of which came from ICU. The sputum separation rate from ICU was significantly higher than those from non-ICU (p < 0.05). Except for amikacin, levofloxacin, and compound sulfamethoxazole, the resistant rates of the others increased year by year. Meanwhile, the resistance rate of carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii in our hospital showed a significant upward trend and exceeded the average of the national level in 2016 - 2017. CONCLUSIONS: The drug resistance of A. baumannii has generally increased, and active measures have been taken to develop the combined application of antibiotics. Further studies should focus on the judicious use of available antibiotics and implementation of strict infection control measures to avoid the rapid spread or clonal dissemination of A. baumannii in healthcare facilities.

BACKGROUND: Parotid cyst is a common problem in patients treated by surgeons. However, Paracoccus yeei was isolated from an aerobic blood culture in a patient with parotid cyst as an unusual etiologic opportunistic agent. METHODS: Since old biochemical identification kits are not able to identify this species, MALDI-TOF MS correctly was recommended to identify this isolate. Its identity was confirmed by sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. RESULTS: The aligned sequences (16S rRNA gene) were used for a phylogenetic analysis (phylogenetic tree), which was produced using the BLAST pair-wise alignments. The sequence analysis determined that the best matches were with Paracoccus yeei. CONCLUSIONS: Paracoccus yeei has been reported as a rare opportunistic human pathogen, we should actively com-municate to the clinic to improve the real positive rate.

To achieve long-distance underwater optical wireless communication, a single photon detector with single photon limit sensitivity is used to detect the optical signal at the receiver. The communication signal is extracted from the discrete single photon pulses output from the detector. Due to fluctuation of photon flux and quantum efficiency of photon detection, long-distance underwater optical wireless communication has the characteristics that the link is easily interrupted, the bit error rate is high, and the burst error is large. To achieve reliable video transmission, a joint source-channel coding scheme based on residual distributed compressive video sensing is proposed for the underwater photon counting communication system. Signal extraction from single photon pulses, data frame and data verification are specifically designed. This scheme greatly reduces the amount of data at the transmitter, transfers the computational complexity to the decoder in receiver, and enhances anti-channel error ability. The experimental results show that, when the baud rate was 100 kbps and the average number of photon pulses per bit was 20, the bit error rate (BER) was 0.0421 and video frame could still be restored clearly.

BACKGROUND: Severe hypoxemic respiratory failure (SHRF) due to Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia (PJP) in AIDS patients represents the main cause of admission and mortality in respiratory intensive care units (RICUs) in low- and middle-income countries. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to develop a predictive scoring system to estimate the risk of mortality in HIV/AIDS patients with PJP and SHRF. METHODS: We analyzed data of patients admitted to the RICU between January 2013 and January 2018 with a diagnosis of HIV infection and PJP. Multivariate logistic regression and Kaplan-Meier method were used in data analysis. The RICU and inhospital mortality were 25% and 26%, respectively. Multivariate analysis identified four independent predictors: body mass index, albumin, time to ICU admission, and days of vasopressor support. A predictive scoring system was derived and validated internally. The discrimination was 0.869 (95% confidence interval: 0.821-0.917) and calibration intercept (α) and slope (ß) were 0.03 and 0.99, respectively. The sensitivity was 47.2%, specificity was 84.6%, positive predictive value was 89.2%, and negative predictive value was 82.6%. CONCLUSIONS: This scoring system is a potentially useful tool to assist clinicians, in low- and medium-income countries, in estimating the RICU and inhospital mortality risk in patients with HIV/AIDS and SHRF caused by PJP.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Sevoflurane, a commonly used volatile anesthetic, recently has been found has neurotoxicity in the central nervous system of neonatal rodents. This study aimed to reveal whether phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE-4) inhibitor roflumilast has protective functions in sevoflurane-induced nerve damage. METHODS: Hippocampal neurons were isolated from juvenile rats, and were exposed to sevoflurane with or without roflumilast treatment. Cell viability and apoptosis were respectively assessed by CCK-8 and flow cytometry. Western blot analysis was performed to detect the protein expressions of apoptosis-related factors, and core factors in MEK/ERK and mTOR signaling pathways. RESULTS: Toxic effects of sevoflurane on hippocampal neurons were observed, as cell viability was reduced, apoptotic cell rate was increased, Bcl-2 was down-regulated, and Bax, cleaved caspase-3 and -9 were up-regulated after 1% sevoflurane exposure for 16 h. Sevoflurane exhibited a temporarily (less than 16 h) inhibitory effect on MEK/ERK pathway, but has no impact on mTOR pathway. Roflumilast promoted the release of cAMP and down-regulated the protein expression of PDE-4. Roflumilast (1 µM) alone has no impact on viability and apoptosis of hippocampal neurons. However, roflumilast increased cell viability and deceased apoptosis in sevoflurane-injured neurons. Besides, roflumilast could recover sevoflurane-induced deactivation of MEK/ERK pathway. CONCLUSION: To conclude, this study demonstrated a neuroprotective role of roflumilast in sevoflurane-induced nerve damage. Roflumilast promoted hippocampal neurons viability, and reduced apoptosis possibly via modulation of MEK/ERK signaling pathway.

Biochar has been used to reduce the mobility and availability of heavy metals in contaminated paddy soils. A pot experiment was carried out to analyze the effects of peanut shell biochar (PBC) on the speciation and phytoavailability of Pb and Zn in contaminated acidic paddy soil using rice (Oryza sativa L.) as an indicator plant. Peanut shell biochar was applied to an acidic paddy soil contaminated with Pb and Zn at four rates (0%, 1%, 2%, and 5% w/w), and rice plants were grown in this soil. The soil pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), water-soluble SO42-, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), CaCl2-extractable heavy metals, and speciation of heavy metals were determined. Additionally, biomass and concentrations of heavy metals in rice tissues were determined. The application of PBC significantly increased the pH, CEC, water-soluble SO42-, and DOC in the paddy soil, but decreased the content of CaCl2-extractable Pb and Zn. The CaCl2-extractable Pb and Zn showed significant negative correlations with the pH, CEC, water-soluble SO42-, and DOC (p < 0.05). Following the application of biochar to the contaminated paddy soil, the Pb and Zn concentrations in the CaCl2 extracts were reduced by 41.04-98.66% and 17.78-96.87% (p < 0.05), respectively. Sequential chemical extractions showed a reduction in the acid-soluble Pb and Zn fraction and an increase in the reducible fraction following the addition of biochars. PBC obviously inhibited the uptake and accumulation of Pb and Zn in the rice plants. The Pb concentrations in the rice grain were significantly reduced by 60.32%, with the addition of 5% PBC. Neither of the biochars significantly changed the Zn concentrations in the rice grain. The influence of biochar on Pb and Zn phytoavailability varied not only with the application rate of biochar, but also with the kind of metals. Overall, the use of peanut shell biochar at a high application rate is more effective in immobilizing Pb and Zn in the acidic paddy soil contaminated with heavy metals, especially in reducing the phytoavailability of Pb to the rice plants.

With the development of the omic technologies, the acquisition approaches of various biological data on different levels and types are becoming more mature. As a large amount of data will be produced in the process of diagnosis and treatment of diseases, it is necessary to utilize the artificial intelligence such as machine learning to analyze complex, multi-dimensional and multi-scale data and to construct clinical decision support tools. It will provide a method to figure out rapid and effective programs in diagnosis and treatment. In this process, the choice of artificial intelligence seems to be particularly important, such as machine learning. The article reviews the type and algorithm of machine learning used in clinical decision support, such as support vector machines, logistic regression, clustering algorithms, Bagging, random forests and deep learning. The application of machine learning and other methods in clinical decision support has been summarized and classified. The advantages and disadvantages of machine learning are elaborated. It will provide a reference for the selection between machine learning and other artificial intelligence methods in clinical decision support.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the ideal animal models for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) subtypes and the effect of glucocorticoid receptor (GR) function on the behavior of ADHD rats by comparing behavioral differences between spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs), Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats, and Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. METHODS: A total of 24 male SHRs aged 21 days were randomly divided into GR agonist group, GR inhibitor group, and SHR group, with 8 rats in each group. Eight male WKY rats and 8 male SD rats, also aged 21 days, were enrolled as WKY group and SD group respectively. The GR agonist group was treated with intraperitoneal injection of dexamethasone (0.5 mg/kg daily); the GR inhibitor group was treated with intraperitoneal injection of mifepristone (RU486) (54 mg/kg daily); the SHR, WKY, and SD groups were treated with intraperitoneal injection of normal saline (0.5 mL/kg daily). The course of treatment was 14 days for all groups. The open field test and Lat maze test were used to evaluate spontaneous activity and non-selective attention. RESULTS: The open field test showed that before drug intervention the SHR group had significantly higher numbers of line crossings and rearings than the WKY and SD groups (P<0.05); the WKY group had a significantly higher number of line crossings than the SD group (P<0.05); the SD group had a significantly higher number of groomings than the WKY group (P<0.05). After drug intervention, the GR agonist group had significantly lower numbers of line crossings and groomings than the SHR group (P<0.05). The Lat maze test indicated that before drug intervention the SHR group had significantly higher numbers of corner crossings and rearings than the WKY and SD groups (P<0.05); the WKY group had significantly higher numbers of rearings and leanings than the SD group (P<0.05). After drug intervention, the GR agonist group had significantly lower numbers of corner crossings and rearings than the SHR group (P<0.05); the GR inhibitor group had a significantly higher number of rearings than the SHR group (P<0.05); the WKY group had significantly higher numbers of rearings and leanings than the SD group (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: SHR is an ideal animal model for mixed subtype ADHD, and further studies are needed to determine whether WKY rats can be used as an animal model for attention-deficit subtype ADHD. GR agonist can effectively improve spontaneous activity and non-selective attention in SHRs.

Extensively drug-resistant (XDR) tuberculosis (TB) cannot be easily or quickly diagnosed. We developed a rapid, automated assay for the detection of XDR-TB plus resistance to the drug isoniazid (INH) for point-of-care use. Using a simple filter-based cartridge with an integrated sample processing function, the assay identified a wide selection of wild-type and mutant sequences associated with XDR-TB directly from sputum. Four new large-Stokes-shift fluorophores were developed. When these four Stokes-shift fluorophores were combined with six conventional fluorophores, 10-color probe detection in a single PCR tube was enabled. A new three-phase, double-nested PCR approach allowed robust melting temperature analysis with enhanced limits of detection (LODs). Finally, newly designed sloppy molecular beacons identified many different mutations using a small number of probes. The assay correctly distinguished wild-type sequences from 32 commonly occurring mutant sequences tested in gyrA, gyrB, katG, and rrs genes and the promoters of inhA and eis genes responsible for resistance to INH, the fluoroquinolone (FQ) drugs, amikacin (AMK), and kanamycin (KAN). The LOD was 300 CFU of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in 1 ml sputum. The rate of detection of heteroresistance by the assay was equivalent to that by Sanger sequencing. In a blind study of 24 clinical sputum samples, resistance mutations were detected in all targets with 100% sensitivity, with the specificity being 93.7 to 100%. Compared to the results of phenotypic susceptibility testing, the sensitivity of the assay was 75% for FQs and 100% each for INH, AMK, and KAN and the specificity was 100% for INH and FQ and 94% for AMK and KAN. Our approach could enable testing for XDR-TB in point-of-care settings, potentially identifying highly drug-resistant TB more quickly and simply than currently available methods.

BACKGROUND: Researchers from several different countries have found the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS) to have good psychometric properties. However, to our knowledge, no studies on this subject have been reported in Mainland China. In this study, we investigated the psychometric properties of the Chinese Mandarin version of the SRS when used in Mainland China. METHODS: The reliability and validity of the parent-report SRS in a sample of 749 children of 4- to 14-year-olds: 411 typically developing and 338 clinical participants (202 with autism spectrum disorder (ASD)) were examined. RESULTS: Internal consistency for total scale (0.871-0.922), test-retest reliability (0.81-0.94), and convergent validity with the Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC) (0.302-0.647) were satisfactory. The SRS total score discriminated between the ASD and other developmental disorders. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses revealed that the SRS was predicted to accurately classify 69.2-97.2% of youth ASD. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) supported a single-factor solution for the ASD subsample. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) did not confirm the theoretical construct of five factors model with inadequate fit in the ASD subsample. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, our findings supported the reliability and validity of the parent-report SRS as one ASD screening instrument. In addition, we also suggest that the use of separate cut-offs for screening purposes (optimizing sensitivity) vs. clinical confirmation (optimizing specificity) should be considered.

To mitigate the serious problem of Cd-contaminated paddy soil, we investigated the remediation potential of combining in-situ immobilization with a low-Cd-accumulation rice cultivar. A three-season field experiment compared the soil pH, available Cd and absorption of Cd by three rice cultivars with different Cd accumulation abilities grown in Cd-contaminated paddy soil amended with lime (L), slag (S), and bagasse (B) alone or in combination. The three amendments applied alone and in combination significantly increased soil pH, reduced available Cd and absorption of Cd by rice with no effect on grain yield. Among these, the LS and LSB treatments reduced the brown rice Cd content by 38.3-69.1% and 58.3-70.9%, respectively, during the three seasons. Combined with planting of a low-Cd-accumulation rice cultivar (Xiang Zaoxian 32) resulted in a Cd content in brown rice that met the contaminant limit (≤0.2mgkg-1). However, the grain yield of the low-Cd-accumulation rice cultivar was approximately 30% lower than the other two rice cultivars. Applying LS or LSB as amendments combined with planting a low-Cd-accumulation rice cultivar is recommended for the remediation of Cd-contaminated paddy soil. The selection and breeding of low-Cd-accumulation rice cultivars with high grain production requires further research.
