BACKGROUND: This study conducted in-depth interviews to explore the factors that influence the choice of a post-acute care (PAC) model (inpatient rehabilitation hospital, skilled nursing facility, home health, and outpatient rehabilitation) among stroke patients and their families. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured, in-depth interviews of 21 stroke patients and their families at four hospitals in Taiwan. Content analysis was used in this qualitative study. RESULTS: Results revealed five main factors that influence respondents' choice of PAC: (1) medical professionals' suggestions, (2) health care accessibility, (3) continuity and coordination of care, (4) willingness and prior experience of patients and their relatives and friends, and (5) economic factors. CONCLUSIONS: This study identifies five main factors that affect the choice of PAC models among stroke patients and their families. We suggest that policymakers establish comprehensive health care resources based on the needs of patients and families. Health care providers shall provide professional recommendations and adequate information to support decision-making, which aligns with the preferences and values of patients and their families. From this research, we hope to improve the accessibility of PAC services in order to enhance the quality of care for stroke patients.

OBJECTIVES: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is prevalent worldwide, and survival in OSCC has not improved significantly in the past decades. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have an important regulatory role in oral carcinogenesis. This study investigated the functional and clinical implications of miR-187* in OSCC pathogenesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Expression of miR-187* in OSCC tissues and patient plasma was assayed using quantitative RT-PCR. The diagnostic power was specified using receiver operator curve analysis. The phenotypic influence of miR-187* in OSCC cells was delineated using exogenous expression. RESULTS: miR-187* was upregulated in OSCC tissue relative to control mucosa. Overexpression of miR-187* enhanced the oncogenic phenotype of OSCC cells, including cell migration and anchorage-independent colony formation. Plasma miR-187* levels could be used to distinguish patients from controls with a separating power of 0.73. Patients showing a reduction in plasma miR-187* after tumor resection had a better prognosis. CONCLUSION: miR-187* plays oncogenic roles in oral carcinogenesis. Plasma miR-187* could be validated as a marker of OSCC for diagnostic uses. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This research implied that plasma miR-187* was a diagnostic marker for patients with OSCC, and plasma miR-187* level could be a prognostic factor for OSCC patients who received ablation surgery.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To (i) investigate the characteristics of health-related quality of life and satisfaction with case management and (ii) to identify factors associated with health-related quality of life in cancer survivors. BACKGROUND: The level of health-related quality of life can reflect treatment efficacy and satisfaction with cancer care. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study design was adopted. METHODS: Subjects from the outpatient setting of a cancer centre in northern Taiwan were recruited by consecutive sampling. A set of questionnaires were employed, including a background information form, case management service satisfaction survey (CMSS) and The European Quality of Life Scale (EQ-5D). Descriptive statistics were used to examine levels of health-related quality of life and satisfaction with case management. Pearson's correlation was used to identify relationships between treatment characteristics, satisfaction with case management and health-related quality of life. Multiple stepwise regression was used to identify factors associated with health-related quality of life. RESULTS: A total of 252 cancer patients were recruited. The three lowest scores for items of health-related quality of life were mobility, self-care and usual activities. Cancer survivors with higher mobility, less pain and discomfort, and lower anxiety and depression were more likely to have better health-related quality of life. CONCLUSION: Mobility, pain and discomfort, and anxiety and depression are important predictive factors of high health-related quality of life in cancer survivors. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: In clinical care, patients' physical mobility, pain and discomfort, and anxiety and depression are important indicators of health-related quality of life. Case managers should include self-care and symptom management into survivorship care plans to improve health-related quality of life during survival after treatment concludes.

BACKGROUND: Anti-cancer chemotherapy may cause skin-toxicity reactions. Different types of cooling packages affect chemotherapy-induced skin toxicity reactions differently. PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of cooling packing care on chemotherapy-induced skin toxicity reactions in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. METHODS: A systematic review approach was used. Searches were conducted in databases including Cochrane Library, Embase, MEDLINE, PubMed and Airiti Library using the keywords "chemotherapy cutaneous toxicity", "chemotherapy skin reaction", "chemotherapy skin toxicity", "frozen glove", "frozen sock", "cooling packaging care", "ice gloves", "ice socks", "usual care", "severity", "comfort", "satisfaction", "severity", and "comfort". The search focused on articles published before December 2016. Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 5 articles involving relevant randomized controlled trials were extracted for review. RESULTS: Elasto-Gel ice gloves or ice socks that were chilled to -25°C- -30°C and used for 15 mins during initial chemotherapy, for one hour during chemotherapy infusion, and for 15 mins after chemotherapy were shown to improve the frequency and severity of chemotherapy-induced skin toxicity reactions. Several studies were limited by small sample sizes and different types of cooling packing programs, temperature, timing, and frequency. Thus, further research is recommended to verify the effects of cooling packing care. CONCLUSIONS / IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Cancer patients who were treated with docetaxel or PLD and who used ice gloves or ice socks that were chilled to -25°C- -30°C for 15 mins during initial chemotherapy, for one hour during chemotherapy infusion, and for 15 mins after chemotherapy improved significantly in terms of the frequency and severity of their chemotherapy-induced skin toxicity reactions. Local cooling packing care is a non-pharmacotherapy approach that is low cost and free of side effects. This review is intended to provide a reference for clinical care.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Breast cancer patients may encounter a wide range of physical and psychosocial distress symptoms during diagnosis, while awaiting treatment, and during treatment. This study of newly diagnosed breast cancer patients explores: (1) changes in symptom distress over 4 months; and (2) factors predicting changes in symptom distress. METHODS: A prospective longitudinal design was used to collect data from breast cancer patients in northern Taiwan. A set of questionnaires was used to measure anxiety, symptom distress, social support, and demographic and treatment-related characteristics. Repeated measures analysis of variance (RM-ANOVA) with least significant difference (LSD) was used to examine differences in symptom distress, state anxiety, and social-support levels across four time-points. Generalized estimating equation (GEE) is used to determine predictors for the change in symptom distress. RESULTS: Participants showed mild overall symptom distress during treatment that increased from cancer diagnosis to treatment phases, with a peak at 4 months after diagnosis. Insomnia was the most commonly identified distressful symptom over time. Changes in overall symptom distress were significantly predicted by state anxiety, health professional support, and time since cancer diagnosis. CONCLUSION: Change in symptom distress following the first 4 months after diagnosis was predicted by state anxiety, health professional support, and time. Patients should receive social support and be trained in problem-solving skills to relieve distressful symptoms from diagnosis through treatment.

BPC 157, a pentadecapeptide derived from human gastric juice, has been demonstrated to promote the healing of different tissues, including skin, muscle, bone, ligament and tendon in many animal studies. However, the underlying mechanism has not been fully clarified. The present study aimed to explore the effect of BPC 157 on tendon fibroblasts isolated from Achilles tendon of male Sprague-Dawley rat. From the result of cDNA microarray analysis, growth hormone receptor was revealed as one of the most abundantly up-regulated genes in tendon fibroblasts by BPC 157. BPC 157 dose- and time-dependently increased the expression of growth hormone receptor in tendon fibroblasts at both the mRNA and protein levels as measured by RT/real-time PCR and Western blot, respectively. The addition of growth hormone to BPC 157-treated tendon fibroblasts dose- and time-dependently increased the cell proliferation as determined by MTT assay and PCNA expression by RT/real-time PCR. Janus kinase 2, the downstream signal pathway of growth hormone receptor, was activated time-dependently by stimulating the BPC 157-treated tendon fibroblasts with growth hormone. In conclusion, the BPC 157-induced increase of growth hormone receptor in tendon fibroblasts may potentiate the proliferation-promoting effect of growth hormone and contribute to the healing of tendon.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) refers to permanent damage to the kidneys that occurs gradually over time. Further progression may be preventable depending on its stage. PURPOSE: This study was developed to evaluate the effect of a health literacy education program (HLEP) on mental health and renal functioning in patients with CKD. METHODS: A single-blind, randomized controlled trial study was conducted. Data were collected from March 25 to December 18, 2021. Participants were randomly assigned to either the experimental group (n = 42), which received multidisciplinary care and HLEP, or the control group (n = 42), which received multidisciplinary care only. Data were collected at baseline (T1), Month 3 (T2), and Month 6 (T3), and the data included patient characteristics, estimated glomerular filtration rate, and responses to the Mandarin Multidimensional Health Literacy Questionnaire and Beck Depression Inventory. RESULTS: After 6 months of the HLEP intervention, the results of generalized estimating equations analysis showed that, compared with the control group, the experimental group had significantly higher health literacy at Month 3 (ß = -3.37, 95% CI [-5.68, -1.06]), significantly improved depression at Month 3 (ß = -2.24, 95% CI [-4.11, -0.37]) and Month 6 (ß = -4.36, 95% CI [-6.60, -2.12]), and a significantly higher estimated glomerular filtration rate at Month 6 (ß = 5.87, 95% CI [1.35, 10.38]). CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: The findings of this study may provide a reference for healthcare providers to educate patients with Stage 3-4 CKD using the HLEP. Positive effects on health literacy, depression, and renal function in patients with Stage 3-4 CKD were observed in the short term. Findings from this study may facilitate the implementation of multidisciplinary and nurse-led strategies in primary care to reinforce patients' health literacy, self-care ability, and adjustment to CKD as well as delay disease progression.

This study examines the predictive value of elevated N-terminal-pro brain natriuretic peptide (NT-pro BNP) levels for mortality among patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Data from 768 ESRD patients, excluding those with cancer or lost follow-up, were analyzed using Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox proportional hazards models over three years. Results indicated that patients with very high NT-pro BNP levels had shorter average survival times and a significantly higher risk of mortality (hazard ratio 1.43). Advanced age, ICU admission, and comorbidities like cerebrovascular diseases and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease also contributed to increased mortality risks. Thus, elevated NT-pro BNP is an independent risk factor for mortality in ESRD patients.

Cerebral Small Vessel Disease (CSVD) frequently affects the elderly, with inflammation playing a crucial role in related health complications, including dementia, stroke, and SVD. Studies, including animal experiments, indicate a strong link between inflammation and SVD progression. The Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) serves as a possible biomarker for ongoing inflammatory risks. A total of 720 adults aged 50 years or older from the community-based I-Lan Longitudinal Aging Study were included in this study. General linear regression and ordinally logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the association between NLR and CSVD. We further examined the presence of lacune, microbleed, and white matter hyperintensity (WMH) on brain MRI, which were used to construct a combined CSVD score. The NLR was positively associated with WMH (adjusted r = 0.109, p = 0.003), microbleed (adjusted r = 0.102, p = 0.006), and lacune (adjusted r = 0.100, p = 0.008). After adjustments for smoking, drinking, and physical activity in the ordinal logistic regression analysis, age, gender, brachial Systolic Blood Pressure (SBP), fasting glucose, LDL-cholesterol, and Hs-CRP were compared among subjects with low tertile (T1), medium tertile (T2) and high tertile (T3) NLR. The results showed that T2 vs. T1 had an odds ratio of 1.23 (0.86-1.77); and T3 vs. T1 had an odds ratio of 1.87 (1.29-2.71) of CSVD scores in four groups (zero (reference group), one, two, and three or more). NLR could be used to assess the state of inflammation in cerebral vessels. A significant and positive correlation between NLR and CSVD was verified in this study. However, the practical clinical application of NLR in CSVD patients and prognosis prediction should be validated through more scientific attempts.

The emergence of new psychoactive substances currently exceeding a thousand is rapidly changing substance prevalence patterns and straining the methods used for detection, most of which are suitable only for a single class of substances. This study presents a rapid and facile dilute-and-shoot system operated in conjunction with an optimized liquid chromatographic separation system for the high-sensitivity detection of substances across a range of substance classes with 3 isotopes used only. The proposed method based on liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) is able to identify 68 substance and their metabolites in urine samples as small as 50 µL. Optimal chromatographic conditions including 95% water/methanol ratio with 0.1% added formic acid and a prolonged LC gradient run-time (15 min) improved the peak shape of polar compounds and enhanced signal strength by 5%. Under 4-fold dilution, all analytes were within 80-120% of tolerance response levels, indicating that the matrix effect was insignificant. In experiments, the limit of detection (LOD) ranged from 0.05 to 0.5 ng mL-1, while the coefficient of determination (R2) was > 0.9950. The retention time shift of each peak remained at < 2% with an inter-day relative standard deviation (RSD) of 0.9-14.9% and intra-day RSD of 1.1%- 13.8%. The rapid dilute-and-shoot presents a high-sensitivity, significant stability, robustness and reproducibility without serious interference. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the system, 532 urine samples were collected from suspected drug abusers, and the proposed method was used for rapid analysis. Of these samples, 79.5% contained between one and twelve analytes, and 12.4% tested positive for new psychoactive substances, mostly derivatives of amphetamine and synthetic cathinones. The study presents a high-sensitivity analytic system that is capable of detecting substances from multiple classes and can be used for effective monitoring of substance prevalence in urine.

BACKGROUND: With technological advances, radiotherapy has progressed from simple irradiation to robotic arm-based stereotactic radiosurgery systems (SRS, in this case, CyberKnife®). This equipment is high-priced and might be cost-effective or not. The National Health Insurance (NHI) in Taiwan has a premedical claims review process for approving CyberKnife® treatment; however, patients might have to pay for the procedure themselves if the NHI rejects the practice. Under the high treatment cost and such an insurance system, a sketch of patients treated by these high-cost machines and whether the prereview of insurance for reimbursement is reasonable without hindering the patient's right to undergo treatment should be investigated. In this study, the patients of CyberKnife® radiotherapy in our institute were investigated as an example for this purpose. METHODS: Patients who underwent CyberKnife® radiotherapy in our department were investigated retrospectively. Their demographic characteristics, disease patterns, and treatment sites were analyzed. Survivals were compared according to clinical features, and treatment expenses were reimbursed after prereview or out-of-pocket. RESULTS: From October 19, 2014, to January 30, 2018, there were 331 patients included in this study, 205 (55.3%) of whom underwent CyberKnife® radiotherapy at their own expense, while 166 (44.7%) had their expenses approved for reimbursement after prereview by NHI. Most patients were treated for metastatic tumors (37.5%), and the brain was the most frequent treatment site (46.1%). The 1-year overall survival was 67.1%, and the 2-year overall survival was 56.3% after CyberKinfe® radiotherapy. The best survival rate (96.8% at 1 year) was for patients with brain tumors. In patient's characteristics, A better Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status, treatment for primary tumors, and outpatient treatment were independent factors for superior survival after CyberKnife® radiotherapy. The survivals for patients whose treatment expenses were approved for reimbursement after prereview by NHI were also better than out-of-pocket. CONCLUSIONS: Besides the patients' characteristics, the treatment expense could be approved or rejected for reimbursement by the NHI prereview was an independent factor for survival in CyberKnife® radiotherapy. Prereview to reimburse expensive treatment is not an unreasonable requirement.

The probable carcinogenic nitrosamine impurities, such as N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA) and N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), have been detected from various pharmaceuticals in recent years. The sensitive chromatographic methods, including liquid chromatography (LC) and gas chromatography (GC), have been applied for analyzing nitrosamines in the pharmaceutical substrates, such as sartans, ranitidine and metformin. In comparison of LC, the efficacy of GC for analyzing multiple nitrosamines in diverse pharmaceuticals will be limited or attenuated owing to the chemical properties of target analytes or matrix hinderance of pharmaceutical substrates. To extend the applicability of GC analysis for multiple nitrosamines in pharmaceuticals, this study presented a gas chromatograph tandem mass (GC-MS/MS) method for monitoring 14 nitrosamines within 44 pharmaceuticals, whereas the headspace-solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) sampling mode was introduced. Chromatographic separation was achieved on a DB-heavyWax column (30 m × 0.25 mm; i.d., 0.25 µm), whereas the HS-SPME sampling mode with a 50/30 µm DVB/CAR/PDMS extracting fiber was applied for comparison of the direct injection mode. Meanwhile, the HS-SPME conditions were optimized to evaluate the effects of the parameters on analyzing total nitrosamines in pharmaceuticals by GC-MS/MS. The optimal conditions of HS-SPME were as follows: extracting solution of 90% NaCl, HS incubation time 1 min, SPME adsorbing at 80 â„ƒ for 30 min, and desorbing at 250 â„ƒ for 5 min. The limit of quantification (LOQ) for 14 nitrosamines in pharmaceutical matrices under the optimal conditions was 0.05 µg/g for the optimal HS-SPME, whereas the value was 0.05-0.25 µg/g for direct injection.

AIM: Nursing staff burnout threatens not only nurses' health but also the safety and health of their patients. Organizations should be aware of how work-related conflict can affect this burnout. This study examined the effect of supervisor support and work-family conflict on resource loss and burnout. METHODS: A cross-sectional method and quantitative approach were adopted. A total of 300 questionnaires were distributed to clinical nursing staff in two regional teaching hospitals, and 239 valid questionnaires were returned. RESULTS: Work-family conflict had a mediating effect on the relationship between supervisor support and emotional exhaustion. Emotional exhaustion fully mediated the relationships between depersonalization, work-family conflict, and reduced professional efficacy. CONCLUSION: The mediating effect of emotional exhaustion in work-family conflict results from depersonalization and reduced professional efficacy, whereas work-family conflict mediated the effect of supervisor support on emotional exhaustion. The findings indicate that the medical industry should implement supervisor support strategies to reduce nursing staff work-family conflict and improve interventions for emotional exhaustion.

The objectives of this work aim to investigate the interaction and cytotoxicity between nanometric graphene oxide (GO) and nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells (NPC-BM1), and possible application in photon therapy. GO nanosheets were obtained in the size range of 100-200 nm, with a negative surface charge. This nanometric GO exhibited a limited (<10%) cytotoxicity effect and no significant dimensional change on NPC-BM1 cells in the tested GO concentration range (0.1-10 µg·mL-1). However, the secondary protein structure was modified in the GO-treated NPC-BM1 cells, as determined through synchrotron radiation-based Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy (SR-FTIRM) mapping. To further study the cellular response of GO-treated NPC-BM1 cancer cells at low GO concentration (0.1 µg·mL-1), photon radiation was applied with increasing doses, ranging from 2 to 8 Gy. The low radiation energy (<5 Gy) did not cause significant cell mortality (5-7%). Increasing the radiation energy to 6-8 Gy accelerated cell apoptosis rate, especially in the GO-treated NPC-BM1 cells (27%). This necrosis may be due to GO-induced conformational changes in protein and DNA/RNA, resulting in cell vulnerability under photon radiation. The findings of the present work demonstrate the potential biological applicability of nanometric GO in different areas, such as targeted drug delivery, cellular imaging, and radiotherapy, etc.

New psychoactive substances are being launched in the drug market at a rapidly growing pace. More than 950 new psychoactive substances have been reported to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. The development of new psychoactive substance abuse has drawn risks on public health and safety. Phenethylamines, along with other stimulants, accounted for the majority of the new psychoactive substances being reported in the past decade. This study presents a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method for the simultaneous screening of 74 conventional and artificial phenethylamines in urine samples. The chromatographic analysis was performed by a direct dilute-and-shoot procedure using a Phenomenex Kinetex® Phenyl-Hexyl column (10 cm × 2.1 mm i.d., 1.7 µm) and two mobile phases (A: 0.1% formic acid aqueous solution with 5 mM ammonium acetate, B: 0.1% formic acid methanolic solution). The mass fragments were collected under the multiple reaction monitoring mode. The linearity range located in 1.0-50.0 ng/mL for quantitative analysis. The limit of detection and lower limit of quantification for 74 phenethylamines were 0.5 ng/mL and 1.0 ng/mL, respectively. The method was validated and further applied to analyze authentic urine samples. Twenty samples were tested positive of seven phenethylamines from 67 samples, whereas the contents detected were 9.8 ng/mL to 147.1 µg/mL with dilution factors of 40 to 20,000 folds.

The tobacco epidemic is one of the most serious public health issues in the world. Tobacco use starts and becomes established primarily during adolescence, and nearly 9 out of 10 cigarette smokers first tried smoking by age 18, with 99% first trying by age 26. This study employed a 2 (advertising appeal: emotional vs. rational) by 2 (self-referencing: analytical vs. narrative) factorial design in Study 1; and a 2 (relational-interdependent self-construal: high and low) by 3 (social relational cue: self, friend, and family) factorial design in Study 2. The behavior intention of anti-smoking acted as the measured dependent variable. Samples of 192 (Study 1) and 222 (Study 2) were collected from one of the biggest high schools in northern Taiwan. The results showed advertising appeal and self-referencing had a significant interaction effect on behavior intention (p = 0.040). The results also showed rational appealing advertising is suitable for analytical self-referencing (p = 0.022) and emotional appealing advertising is suitable for narrative self-referencing (p = 0.067). However, the social relationship cue and relational-interdependent self-construal had no significant interaction effect on behavior intention, and only relational-interdependent self-construal significantly affected behavior intention (p < 0.001). Regardless of whether the relational-interdependent self-construal is high or low, when the anti-smoking advertising is from the family perspective to persuade adolescents not to smoke, both influence the adolescent more than the other two social relationship cues (self and friend).

An incident of sartan medicine contamination was notified by Europe in June 2018. The contaminant was identified as a probable carcinogenic nitrosamine and the recalls of sartan medicines were soon made. Since then, more nitrosamine contaminants in sartan medicines were reported. To broaden the applicability and variety in nitrosamine determination, a multi-analyte method is required. In this study, a feasible and sensitive multi-analyte LC-MS/MS method for determination of 12 nitrosamines in sartans was established, where the active pharmaceutical ingredients and final products merchandised in Taiwan were also examined. Chromatographic separation was achieved on an Xselect® HSS T3 column (15 cm × 3 mm i.d., 3.5 µm) with gradient elution using mobile phase A consisting of 0.1% formic acid in water and mobile phase B consisting of 0.1% formic acid in acetonitrile/methanol (2:8). Validation of the proposed method was also carried out. The limit of detection and limit of quantification for 12 nitrosamines were 20 ng/g and 50 ng/g, respectively. The intra-day and inter-day recoveries of nitrosamines were among 80-120% with precision of 20% for most nitrosamines within sartans matrices. The method was successfully established and applied to authentic samples which a total of 98 positive samples containing 5 distinct nitrosamines, including N-nitrosodiethylamine, N-nitrosodimethylamine, N-nitroso-N-methyl-4-aminobutyric acid, N-nitrosomorpholine and N-nitrosopiperidine, were detected from 557 authentic samples.

Synthetic cathinones, which are a group of ß-keto analogs of phenethylamine, have been reported as the most emerging new psychoactive substances in the past decade. The quantity and variety of synthetic cathinones have continued to increase, which poses considerable risks to public health and social security. In this study, an analytical method based on liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LCMS/MS) was established for the simultaneous determination of 73 synthetic cathinones and related metabolites in urine. The chromatographic analysis was performed using a Kinetex® Biphenyl column (10 cm ×2.1 mm, 1.7 µm), applying a gradient mobile phase, comprising 0.1 % formic acid aqueous solution with 5 mM ammonium acetate and 0.1 % formic acid methanolic solution; the entire run time of the analysis was within 8 min. The multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode was employed to collect the monitoring and quantitative ion pairs. Intra-day/inter-day precision and accuracy were less than 10 % for all the studied analytes. The limits of detection and quantification for all the analytes were 0.1-0.5 ng/mL and 0.5-1.0 ng/mL, respectively. The matrix effect was satisfactory for all the analytes, with a deviation lower than 20 %. The present method was further applied to 67 authentic urine samples in which 13 different synthetic cathinones were detected from 32 positive samples. The abuse of poly-synthetic cathinones was examined that up to seven items was detected in one case from authentic samples in this study.

PURPOSE: Breast cancer patients who undergo docetaxel-based chemotherapy regimens can have hand-foot syndrome (HFS), which negatively impacts their ability to perform daily activities. The purpose of the study was to assess, in breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy: the perceived levels of HFS-related symptoms of the feet, hands or fingers; and HFS-related restrictions in daily activities; as well as to identify factors associated with these symptoms and restrictions. METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined breast cancer patients who received docetaxel-based chemotherapy from the general surgery outpatient department and oncology outpatient department of a medical center in northern Taiwan. A set of structured questionnaires were used to measure patients' HFS-related symptoms and HFS-related restrictions in daily activities. RESULTS: Of the 85 breast cancer patients studied, 41.2% reported HFS. Patients had higher level of HFS-related foot symptoms than HFS-related hand or fingers symptoms. Greater restriction in HFS-related daily activities was associated with more HFS-related hand or fingers symptoms and more HFS-related foot symptoms; these factors explained 44.7% of the variance in restriction of activities. CONCLUSION: Skin care and patient education should be provided to manage the HFS of breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.
