Recently, nanotechnology is among the most promising technologies used in all areas of research. The production of metal nanoparticles using plant parts has received significant attention for its environmental friendliness and effectiveness. Therefore, we investigated the possible applications of biological synthesized nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiONPs). In this study, NiONPs were synthesized through biological method using an aqueous extract of saffron stigmas (Crocus sativus L). The structure, morphology, purity, and physicochemical properties of the obtained NPs were confirmed through Scanning/Transmission Electron Microscopy attached with Energy Dispersive Spectrum, X-ray Diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared. The spherically shaped NiONPs were found by Debye Scherer's formula to have a mean dimension of 41.19 nm. The application of NiONPs in vitro at 50, 100, and 200 µg/mL, respectively, produced a clear region of 2.0, 2.2, and 2.5 cm. Treatment of Xoo cell with NiONPs reduced the growth and biofilm formation, respectively, by 88.68% and 83.69% at 200 µg/mL. Adding 200 µg/mL NiONPs into Xoo cells produced a significant amount of ROS in comparison with the control. Bacterial apoptosis increased dramatically from 1.05% (control) to 99.80% (200 µg/mL NiONPs). When compared to the control, rice plants treated with 200 µg/mL NiONPs significantly improved growth characteristics and biomass. Interestingly, the proportion of diseased leaf area in infected plants with Xoo treated with NiONPs reduced to 22% from 74% in diseased plants. Taken together, NiONPs demonstrates its effectiveness as a promising tool as a nano-bactericide in managing bacterial infection caused by Xoo.

Background and Aims: Extensive surgical retraction combined with general anesthesia increase alveolar collapse. The primary aim of our study was to investigate the effect of alveolar recruitment maneuver (ARM) on arterial oxygenation tension (PaO2). The secondary aim was to observe its effect on hemodynamics parameters in hepatic patients during liver resection, to investigate its impact on blood loss, postoperative pulmonary complications (PPC), remnant liver function tests, and on the outcome. Material and Methods: Adult patients scheduled for liver resection were randomized into two groups: ARM (n = 21) and control (C) (n = 21). Stepwise ARM was initiated after intubation and was repeated post-retraction. Pressure-control ventilation mode was adjusted to deliver a tidal volume (Vt) of 6 mL/kg and an inspiratory-to-expiratory time (I:E) ratio of 1:2 with an optimal positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) for the ARM group. In the C group, a fixed PEEP (5 cmH2O) was applied. Invasive intra-arterial blood pressure (IBP), central venous pressure (CVP), electrical cardiometry (EC), alanine transaminase (ALT, U/L), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST, U/L) blood levels were monitored. Results: ARM increased PEEP, dynamic compliances, and arterial oxygenation, but reduced ventilator driving pressure compared to group C (P < 0.01). IBP, cardiac output (CO), and stroke volume variation were not affected by the higher PEEP in the ARM group (P > 0.05) but the CVP increased significantly (P = 0.001). Blood loss was not different between the ARM and C groups (1700 (1150-2000) mL vs 1110 (900-2400) mL, respectively and P = 0.57). ARM reduced postoperative oxygen desaturation; however, it did not affect the increase in remnant liver enzymes and was comparable to group C (ALT, P = 0.54, AST, P = 0.41). Conclusions: ARM improved intraoperative lung mechanics and reduced oxygen desaturation episodes in recovery, but not PPC or ICU stay. ARM was tolerated with minimal cardiac and systemic hemodynamic effects.

RESUMO

Dietary interventions have a significant impact on body metabolism. The sensitivity of cancer cells to nutrient and energy deficiency is an evolving characteristic of cancer biology. Preclinical studies provided robust evidence that energy and caloric restrictions could hinder both cancer growth and progression, besides enhancing the efficacy of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Moreover, several, albeit low-powered, clinical trials have demonstrated clinical benefits in cancer patients. Future research will inform and firmly establish the potential efficacy and safety of these dietary interventions. Here, we review the current evidence and ongoing research investigating the relationship between various dietary restriction approaches and cancer outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Despite developments in nanotechnology for use in the pharmaceutical field, there is still a need for implementation of this technology in agrochemistry. In this study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were successfully prepared by a facile and an eco-friendly route using two different ligands, 2'-amino-1,1':4',1″-terphenyl-3,3″,5,5″-tetracarboxylic acid (H4L) and 1,3,6,8-tetrakis (p-benzoic acid)-pyrene (TBAPy), as reducing agents. The physiochemical properties of the as-obtained AgNPs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The toxicity of H4L-AgNP and TBAPy-AgNP against the brown planthopper (BPH, Nilaparvata lugens) was also measured. RESULTS: SEM and TEM analyses demonstrated the formation of quasi-spherical AgNP structures in the presence of H4L and TBAPy. Insecticidal assays showed that TBAPy is less effective against N. lugens, with a median lethal concentration (LC50) of 810 mg/L, while the toxicity of H4L increased and their LC50 reached 786 mg/L 168 h posttreatment at a high concentration of 2000 mg/L. H4L-AgNPs were also highly toxic at a low concentration of 20 mg/L, with LC50 = ~ 3.9 mg/L 168 h posttreatment, while TBAPy-AgNPs exhibited less toxicity at the same concentration, with LC50 = ~ 4.6 mg/L. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that the synthesized AgNPs using the two ligands may be a safe and cheaper method compared with chemical insecticides for protection of rice plants from pests and has potential as an effective insecticide in the N. lugens pest management program.

Aim: Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors (PARPIs) improved progression-free survival among patients with recurrent ovarian cancer. This meta-analysis examined the effectiveness of PARPIs as maintenance strategy for newly diagnosed patients with advanced high-grade ovarian cancer with or without mutations. Materials & methods: Using defined selection criteria, a literature search identified four eligible randomized clinical trials involving 2386 patients. Results: Compared with placebo maintenance, PARPIs achieved a 46% reduction in the risk of progression or death as compared with placebo (hazard ratio: 0.54; 95% CI: 0.39-0.73; p < 0.0001). That benefit was shown in all clinical subgroups: among those with BRCA mutation, with negative/unknown BRCA mutation, and in those with homologous recombination deficient tumors. Data about the effect on overall survival are still premature. Conclusion: In patients with newly diagnosed advanced ovarian cancer, PARPIs maintenance after standard therapy achieved a significant improvement in progression-free survival as compared with placebo, overall and in all subgroups.

Bacterial stem and root rot disease of sweet potato caused by Dickeya dadantii recently broke out in major sweet potato planting areas in China and calls for effective approaches to control the pathogen and disease. Here, we developed a simple method for green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using bacterial culture supernatants. AgNPs synthesized with the cell-free culture supernatant of a bacterium Pseudomonas rhodesiae displayed the characteristic surface plasmon resonance peak at 420-430 nm and as nanocrystallites in diameters of 20-100 nm determined by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. Functional groups associated with proteins in the culture supernatant may reduce silver ions and stabilize AgNPs. The AgNPs showed antibacterial activities against D. dadantii growth, swimming motility, biofilm formation, and maceration of sweet potato tubers whereas the culture supernatant of P. rhodesiae did not. AgNPs (12 µg∙ml-1) and AgNO3 (50 µg∙ml-1) showed close antibacterial activities. The antibacterial activities increased with the increase of AgNP concentrations. The green-synthesized AgNPs can be used to control the soft rot disease by control of pathogen contamination of sweet potato seed tubers.

The association between PIK3CA mutation and resistance to anti-HER2 therapy (AHT) is not precisely defined. This meta-analysis intended to explore the clinical utility of PIK3CA mutation in HER2-positive breast cancer treated with AHT. Literature search identified 19 eligible studies. There were 1720 patients with advanced, 828 with early and 1290 patients treated in the neoadjuvant setting. In metastatic breast cancer, AHT showed no differential objective response benefit between the wild type (WT) and the mutated type (MT) PIK3CA subgroups (odds ratio [OR] = 1.09; 95 % CI 0.60-2.00; P = 0.78). AHT favorable affected progression-free survival (PFS) irrespective of PIK3CA mutation. There was no PFS difference between WT and MT regardless of the offered therapy. In early breast cancer, trastuzumab combined with the same chemotherapy conferred consistent relapse-free survival benefit in WT and MT subgroups (WT: HR = 0.59; 95 % CI 0.44-0.80; P < 0.001 vs. MT: HR = 0.42; 95 % CI 0.24-0.74; P < 0.001). In the neoadjuvant setting, AHT-based therapy produced a 72 % higher pathologic complete response (pCR) rate in WT as compared with that in MT PIK3CA tumors (OR = 1.72; 95 % CI 1.29-2.13; P < 0.001). In that setting, there was no disease-free or overall survival difference based on PIK3CA mutational status. In this meta-analysis, AHT did not achieve differential benefit according to PIK3CA mutation in HER2-positive metastatic or early breast cancer; however, in the neoadjuvant setting, patients harboring WT PIK3CA tumors attained a higher pCR rate.

BACKGROUND: The aim of our study was to evaluate whether a panel of biomarkers, prospectively analysed might be able to predict patients' clinical outcome more accurately than RAS status alone. METHODS: K-RAS (exons 2, 3, 4) wild type colorectal cancer patients, candidates to second/third-line cetuximab with chemotherapy were prospectively allocated into 2 groups on the basis of their profile: favourable (BRAF and PIK3CA exon 20 wild type, EGFR GCN ≥ 2.6, HER-3 Rajkumar score ≤ 8, IGF-1 immunostaining < 2) or unfavourable (any of the previous markers altered or mutated). After the introduction of N-RAS status (exons 2, 3, 4) only RAS wild type patients were considered eligible. Primary aim was response rate (RR). To detect a difference in terms of RR among patients with an unfavourable profile (estimated around 25%) and patients with a favourable profile (estimated around 60%), with a probability alpha of 0.05 and beta of 0.05, required sample size was 46 patients. Secondary endpoints were progression free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). RESULTS: Forty-six patients were enrolled. Seventeen patients (37%) were allocated to the favourable and 29 patients (63%) to the unfavourable profile. RR in the favourable and unfavourable group was 11/17 (65%) and 2/29 (7%) (p = 0.007) respectively. The favourable group also showed an improved PFS (8 months vs. 3 months, p < 0.0001) and OS (15 months vs. 6 months, p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that prospective selection of optimal candidates for cetuximab treatment is feasible and may be able to improve clinical outcome.

BACKGROUND: Bleomycin pulmonary toxicity (BPT) has been described in Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) patients treated with bleomycin-containing chemotherapy regimens. METHODOLOGY: We reviewed the records of 164 consecutive HL patients. RESULTS: BPT was observed in 24 of 164 patients (15%). Older age and history of concomitant lung disease were significantly associated with approximately threefold (odds ratio: 3.38; 95% CI: 1.25-9.13; p = 0.02) and sevenfold (odds ratio: 7.19; 95% CI: 2.64-19.54; p < 0.0001) increase in BPT risk, respectively. The actuarial 5-year progression-free and overall survival for BPT and non-BPT groups, were not significantly different. CONCLUSION: In Saudi Arabian HL patients, the risk of BPT and its effect on survival outcome were comparable to that reported from developed countries.

In a recent meta-analysis, we demonstrated that rich tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) were significantly correlated to a favorable breast cancer (BC) outcome largely in estrogen receptor-negative tumors. It is known that TILs predominate in triple-negative (TN) BC, and to the best of our knowledge, there is no published meta-analysis that examined their prognostic value exclusively in that subtype. Therefore, we planned this meta-analysis to explore the clinical utility of rich TILs in TN-BC. According to predefined selection criteria, literature search identified eight eligible studies. The meta-analysis included data on 2,987 patients with early stage BC. The median percentage of lymph node positivity was 47% (95% confidence interval [CI] 23-82%). Over a median follow-up of 113 months (95% CI 80-144 months), it was found that rich TILs were associated with 30% (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.70; 95% CI 0.56-0.87; P = 0.001), 22% (HR = 0.78; 95% CI 0.68-0.90; P = 0.0008), and 34% (HR = 0.66; 95% CI 0.53-0.83; P = 0.0003), reduction in the risk of recurrence, distant recurrence, and death, respectively. In addition, for every 10% increments in rich TILs, there was an approximate 15-20% reduction in any recurrence, distant recurrence, or mortality. Moreover, rich TILs predicted superior overall survival (OS) benefit irrespective of the disease phenotype (TN-BC or core-basal phenotype), TILs location (intratumoral or stromal), or TILs qualification as either TILs-non-specified, cytotoxic (CD8+) or regulatory (forkhead box protein 3, FOXP3+) T cells. Data on 5-negative phenotype population were limited, and rich TILs failed to demonstrate a prognostic significance in this phenotype. To investigate the heterogeneity that was shown in the analyses of disease-free survival and OS, a set of meta-analyses showed that the method used in TILs detection (hematoxylin and eosin stains vs. immunohistochemistry) could explain most of the variability in the pooled estimates. Rich TILs were significantly associated with better survival outcome in early TN-BC and should be considered as a strong prognostic factor in this subtype. The results from the current meta-analysis support integrating immunotherapy with conventional therapy in future BC research.

BACKGROUND: Screening for colon cancer aims at early detection and prompt treatment of the disease. Prior knowledge of the disease will contribute to increased participation. However, barriers to performing screening are not known. METHODS: A survey using a questionnaire was presented to patients attending the Outpatient Department of a tertiary hospital in the Western Region of Saudi Arabia, to evaluate the background knowledge of colon cancer screening, the diagnostic methods used for that purpose, and the barriers that may resist the implementation of screening. RESULTS: Six hundred and nineteen questionnaires were distributed. Completed questionnaires that were included in the final analysis numbered 321 (51.9%). Age and gender had no statistically significant association with increased awareness of screening options (p = 0.526 and p = 0.2). However, education played a significant role (p = 0.045). Among the group that agreed to undergo screening, there were 55.3% who were willing to undergo colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy. Contrary to that, among the group that did not agree to undergo screening, 77.4% of them would undergo radiological screening using barium enema and/or a computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen. CONCLUSION: There is a deficiency of knowledge of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening influenced by an individual's level of education, yet unrelated to age or gender. The endoscopic modality was usually chosen by individuals who were aware of CRC screening. However, the fear of undergoing this investigation, for the same reason, would likely make them decide to choose less invasive testing, using barium enema or a CT of the abdomen.

Endophytic bacteria, living inside plants, are competent plant colonizers, capable of enhancing immune responses in plants and establishing a symbiotic relationship with them. Endophytic bacteria are able to control phytopathogenic fungi while exhibiting plant growth-promoting activity. Here, we discussed the mechanisms of phytopathogenic fungi control and plant growth-promoting actions discovered in some major groups of beneficial endophytic bacteria such as Bacillus, Paenibacillus, and Pseudomonas. Most of the studied strains in these genera were isolated from the rhizosphere and soils, and a more extensive study of these endophytic bacteria is needed. It is essential to understand the underlying biocontrol and plant growth-promoting mechanisms and to develop an effective screening approach for selecting potential endophytic bacteria for various applications. We have suggested a screening strategy to identify potentially useful endophytic bacteria based on mechanistic phenomena. The discovery of endophytic bacteria with useful biocontrol and plant growth-promoting characteristics is essential for developing sustainable agriculture.

PURPOSE: Oncotype Dx Recurrence Score (RS) is prognostic and predictive of chemotherapy benefit in women with node-negative and node-positive in hormone receptor-positive (HR+), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative (HER2-) early breast cancer. Nevertheless, its direct cost may be inhibitive. This study assesses the correlation between the RS and the free online PREDICT tools' estimations of adjuvant chemotherapy benefit. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of the electronic medical records of 112 patients with tumors tested for the RS and the PREDICT tool was used to estimate survival benefits. The correlation between RS and PREDICT estimations was analyzed using Spearman rank and McNemar tests. RESULTS: The median age of patients was 53 (95% CI, 50 to 55) years, with most patients having negative axillary lymph nodes (78%). While the absolute value for RS showed significant positive correlations with adjuvant chemotherapy's benefit as estimated by PREDICT, no significant correlations were found between the two methods in the percentage of chemotherapy gain. Notably, discordance rates between 48% and 67% between RS-based risk assignments and those based on PREDICT estimates were significant across the study population and subgroups. Only one disease recurrence and one breast cancer-related death were documented over a median follow-up of 23.5 (95% CI, 19.8 to 27.2) months. CONCLUSION: Our findings highlight a significant discordance between RS and PREDICT tools in predicting the benefits of adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with HR+, HER2- early breast cancer. While both tools aim to personalize cancer treatment, their discordance varies, suggesting that PREDICT could not substitute RS to predict adjuvant chemotherapy benefits regardless of patient risk classification. Further studies are needed to explore these relationships and optimize precision medicine approaches in breast cancer management.

Chinese cabbage, scientifically known as Brassica rapa subsp. pekinensis, is a highly popular vegetable in China for its delectable taste. However, the occurrence of bacterial soft rot disease poses a significant threat to its growth and overall development. Consequently, this study aimed to explore the defense mechanisms employed by Chinese cabbage against bacterial soft rot disease. Specifically, the investigation focused on understanding the relationship between the disease and the microbial communities present in the soil surrounding the roots of Chinese cabbage. Significant disparities were observed in the composition of microbial communities present in the root-zone soil of healthy Chinese cabbage plants compared to those affected by Pectobacterium brasiliense-caused soft rot disease. The analysis of 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing results revealed a lower abundance of Proteobacteria (8.39%), Acidobacteriot (0.85), Sphingomonas (3.51%), and Vicinamibacteraceae (1.48%), whereas Firmicutes (113.76%), Bacteroidota (8.71%), Chloroflexi (4.89%), Actinobacteriota (1.71%), A4b (15.52%), Vicinamibacterales (1.62%), and Gemmatimonadaceae (1.35%) were more prevalent in healthy plant soils. Similarly, the analysis of ITS gene high-throughput sequencing results indicated a reduced occurrence of Chytridiomycota (23.58%), Basidiomycota (21.80%), Plectosphaerella (86.22%), and Agaricomycetes (22.57%) in healthy soils. In comparison, Mortierellomycota (50.72%), Ascomycota (31.22%), Podospora (485.08%), and Mortierella (51.59%) were more abundant in healthy plant soils. In addition, a total of 15 bacterial strains were isolated from the root-zone soil of diseased Chinese cabbage plants. These isolated strains demonstrated the ability to fix nitrogen (with the exception of ZT20, ZT26, ZT41, ZT45, and ZT61), produce siderophores and indole acetic acid (IAA), and solubilize phosphate. Notably, ZT14 (Citrobacter freundii), ZT33 (Enterobacter cloacae), ZT41 (Myroides odoratimimus), ZT52 (Bacillus paramycoides), ZT58 (Klebsiella pasteurii), ZT45 (Klebsiella aerogenes), and ZT32 (Pseudomonas putida) exhibited significant growth-promoting effects as determined by the plant growth promotion (PGP) tests. Consequently, this investigation not only confirmed the presence of the soft rot pathogen in Chinese cabbage plants in Hangzhou, China, but also advanced our understanding of the defense mechanisms employed by Chinese cabbage to combat soft rot-induced stress. Additionally, it identified promising plant-growth-promoting microbes (PGPMs) that could be utilized in the future to enhance the Chinese cabbage industry.

Rice blast, an extremely destructive disease caused by the filamentous fungal pathogen Magnaporthe oryzae, poses a global threat to the production of rice (Oryza sativa L.). The emerging trend of reducing dependence on chemical fungicides for crop protection has increased interest in exploring bioformulated nanomaterials as a sustainable alternative antimicrobial strategy for effectively managing plant diseases. Herein, we used physiomorphological, transcriptomic, and metabolomic methods to investigate the toxicity and molecular action mechanisms of moringa-chitosan nanoparticles (M-CNPs) against M. oryzae. Our results demonstrate that M-CNPs exhibit direct antifungal properties by impeding the growth and conidia formation of M. oryzae in a concentration-dependent manner. Propidium iodide staining indicated concentration-dependent significant apoptosis (91.33%) in the fungus. Ultrastructural observations revealed complete structural damage in fungal cells treated with 200 mg/L M-CNPs, including disruption of the cell wall and destruction of internal organelles. Transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses revealed the intricate mechanism underlying the toxicity of M-CNPs against M. oryzae. The transcriptomics data indicated that exposure to M-CNPs disrupted various processes integral to cell membrane biosynthesis, aflatoxin biosynthesis, transcriptional regulation, and nuclear integrity in M. oryzae., emphasizing the interaction between M-CNPs and fungal cells. Similarly, metabolomic profiling demonstrated that exposure to M-CNPs significantly altered the levels of several key metabolites involved in the integral components of metabolic pathways, microbial metabolism, histidine metabolism, citrate cycle, and lipid and protein metabolism in M. oryzae. Overall, these findings demonstrated the potent antifungal action of M-CNPs, with a remarkable impact at the physiological and molecular level, culminating in substantial apoptotic-like fungal cell death. This research provides a novel perspective on investigating bioformulated nanomaterials as antifungal agents for plant disease control.

Recently, nanoparticles have been widely used in agricultural pest control as a secure substitute for pesticides. However, the effect of nanoparticles on controlling the subterranean termite Odontotermes formosanus (O. formosanus) has not been studied yet. Consequently, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of some nanomaterials in controlling O. formosanus. The results showed that zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs), titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2NPs), and chitosan nanoparticles (CsNPs) biosynthesized using the culture filtrate of Scedosporium apiospermum (S. apiospermum) had an effective role in controlling O. formosanus. Moreover, the mortality rate of O. formosanus after 48 h of treatment with ZnONPs, TiO2NPs, and CsNPs at a 1000 µg/mL concentration was 100%, 100%, and 97.67%, respectively. Furthermore, using ZnONPs, TiO2NPs, and CsNPs on O. formosanus resulted in morpho-histological variations in the normal structure, leading to its death. X-ray diffraction, UV-vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and the Zeta potential were used to characterize the biosynthesis of ZnONPs, TiO2NPs, and CsNPs with strong activity against O. formosanus termites. Overall, the results of this investigation suggest that biosynthesized ZnONPs, TiO2NPs, and CsNPs have enormous potential for use as innovative, ecologically safe pesticides for O. formosanus control.

Rice blast disease (RBD) caused by Magnaporthe oryzae, threaten food security by cutting agricultural output. Nano agrochemicals are now perceived as sustainable, cost-effective alternatives to traditional pesticides. This study investigated bioformulation of moringa chitosan nanoparticles (M-CsNPs) and their mechanisms for suppressing RBD while minimizing toxic effects on the microenvironment. M-CsNPs, sized 46 nm with semi-spherical morphology, significantly suppressed pathogen growth, integrity, and colonization at 200 mg L-1in vitro. Greenhouse tests with foliar exposure to the same concentration resulted in a substantial 77.7 % reduction in RBD, enhancing antioxidant enzyme activity and plant health. Furthermore, M-CsNPs improved photosynthesis, gas exchange, and the nutritional profile of diseased rice plants. RNA-seq analysis highlighted upregulated defense-related genes in treated rice plants. Metagenomic study showcased reshaping of the rice microbiome, reducing Magnaporthe abundance by 93.5 %. Both healthy and diseased rice plants showed increased microbial diversity, particularly favoring specific beneficial species Thiobacillus, Nitrospira, Nocardioides, and Sphingomicrobium in the rhizosphere and Azonexus, Agarivorans, and Bradyrhizobium in the phyllosphere. This comprehensive study unravels the diverse mechanisms by which M-CsNPs interact with plants and pathogens, curbing M. oryzae damage, promoting plant growth, and modulating the rice microbiome. It underscores the significant potential for effective plant disease management.

Objectives: To enhance the utilization of reclaimed land, Sanyeqing (SYQ) has been extensively cultivated in Zhejiang province, China. However, the prevalence of anthracnose has significantly hindered SYQ growth, emerging as a primary obstacle to its production. This study aimed to elucidate SYQ's responses to anthracnose in reclaimed land environments by comprehensively analyzing root-zone bacterial community structure, metabolites, and soil properties. Methods: The experiment was conducted on reclaimed land in Chun'an, China. In order to evaluate the responses of SYQ to anthracnose, the fresh and dry weight of SYQ tubes, the soil properties, the high-throughput sequencing, and metabolomics assay were carried out. Results: Significant differences were observed between an anthracnose-resistant variety (A201714) and an anthracnose-susceptibile variety (B201301). Fresh and dry weight increased 131.53 % and 144.82 % for A201714 compared to B201301.Lacibacterium (39.85 %), Gp6 (21.83 %), Gp5 (21.49 %), and Sphingomonas (18.84 %) were more prevalent, whereas Gp3 (22.71 %), WPS-1 (18.88 %), Gp4 (15.60 %), Subdivision3 (14.70 %), Chryseolinea (14.37 %), and Nitrospira (0.76 %) were less prevalent in A201714 than B201301. A total of 24 bacterial biomarkers were detected in all soil samples, while the network suggests a more stable soil bacterial community in A201714 than in B201301. Eight differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) that belonged to lipids and lipid-like molecules, organic acids and derivatives, benzenoids, nucleosides, nucleotides, and analogues were found between two soil samples, and all these eight DEMs were downregulated in A201714 and had a strong correlation with 12 genera of bacteria. Moreover, the data from the redundancy analysis indicated that the main variables affecting changes in the bacterial communities were pH, available phosphorus (AP), available potassium (AK), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), and microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN). Conclusion: This research offers new insights into the SYQ response to anthracnose in reclaimed land and provides valuable recommendations for the high-quality SYQ cultivation and production.

The biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using plant extracts has become a safe replacement for conventional chemical synthesis methods to fight plant pathogens. In this study, the antifungal activity of biosynthesized AgNPs was evaluated both in vitro and under greenhouse conditions against root rot fungi of common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), including Macrophomina phaseolina, Pythium graminicola, Rhizoctonia solani, and Sclerotium rolfsii. Among the eleven biosynthesized AgNPs, those synthesized using Alhagi graecorum plant extract displayed the highest efficacy in suppressing those fungi. The findings showed that using AgNPs made with A. graecorum at a concentration of 100 µg/mL greatly slowed down the growth of mycelium for R. solani, P. graminicola, S. rolfsii, and M. phaseolina by 92.60%, 94.44%, 75.93%, and 79.63%, respectively. Additionally, the minimum inhibitory concentration (75 µg/mL) of AgNPs synthesized by A. graecorum was very effective against all of these fungi, lowering the pre-emergence damping-off, post-emergence damping-off, and disease percent and severity in vitro and greenhouse conditions. Additionally, the treatment with AgNPs led to increased root length, shoot length, fresh weight, dry weight, and vigor index of bean seedlings compared to the control group. The synthesis of nanoparticles using A. graecorum was confirmed using various physicochemical techniques, including UV spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. Collectively, the findings of this study highlight the potential of AgNPs as an effective and environmentally sustainable approach for controlling root rot fungi in beans.

BACKGROUND: Sunitinib, a multi-targeted receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor, has demonstrated survival benefit in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC); however, significant adverse events (AEs) have been associated with its use. The significant variation in the reported incidences of AEs has prompted this meta-analysis to quantify the risk and explore associated predictors. METHODS: According to predefined selection criteria, a literature search identified 12 studies that were included in the analyses. RESULTS: The meta-analysis included 5,658 patients; 66 % patients had prior systemic therapy whereas the remaining patients (34 %) received sunitinib in the first-line setting. For any grade toxicity, skin rash, fatigue, diarrhea, and mucositis were the most frequently encountered events (81, 52, 45, and 33 %, respectively). Anemia, neutropenia, or thrombocytopenia of any grade occurred in more than one-third of patients, although grades 3 or 4 were less common. Any grade raised by liver enzymes or serum creatinine occurred in 40 and 44 % of patients, respectively. Meta-regression analyses showed that study size was inversely related to the risk of experiencing fatigue, diarrhea, mucositis, anemia, and thrombocytopenia. In particular, the incidence of AEs was higher when sunitinib was used in pretreated versus naive patients; however, there was no significant difference between the two groups concerning the incidence of laboratory abnormalities. We addressed the limitations of reporting AEs in clinical studies. CONCLUSIONS: The present meta-analysis quantified sunitinib-associated AEs. The derived estimates would be similar to that to be expected from the use of sunitinib in community practice in unselected patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC).
