BACKGROUND: Patients' expectations of an anticipated timeline of recovery and fear of anesthesia in aesthetic breast surgery have not been studied. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess patient anxiety, expectations, and satisfaction after Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS) pathways for aesthetic breast surgery and the progress of postoperative recovery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All consecutive patients who underwent aesthetic breast surgery between April 2021 and August 2022 were included in this single-center prospective cohort study. The ERAS protocol consists of more than 20 individual measures in the pre-, intra-, and postoperative period. Epidemiological data, expectations, and recovery were systematically assessed with standardized self-assessment questionnaires, including the International Pain Outcome Questionnaire (IPO), the BREAST-Q or BODY-Q, and data collection forms. RESULTS: In total, 48 patients with a median of 30 years of age were included. Patients returned to most daily activities within 5 days. Eighty-eight percent of patients were able to accomplish daily activities sooner than expected. The time of return to normal daily activities was similar across all procedure types. There was no statistically significant difference regarding postoperative satisfaction between patients who recovered slower (12%) and patients who recovered as fast or faster (88%) than anticipated (p=0.180). Patients reporting fear of anesthesia in the form of conscious sedation significantly diminished from 17 to 4% postoperatively (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS) pathways for aesthetic breast surgery are associated with rapid recovery and high patient satisfaction. This survey study provides valuable insight into patients' concerns and perspectives that may be implemented in patient education and consultations to improve patient satisfaction following aesthetic treatments. INTRODUCTION: Knowledge of the vascular anatomy is critical to performing safe gluteal surgery. To date, only the course of the main blood vessels within the muscles has been outlined. These findings are based on MRI and CTA images that do not conform to a topographically standardized and normalized probability distribution. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to develop a three-dimensional mapping of the gluteal zones of high vascular density in relation to anatomical landmarks. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This single-center retrospective cohort analysis comprised all consecutive patients who underwent cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans between January 2016 and October 2021. The location of blood vessels in the gluteal region was allometrically normalized in relation to anatomical landmarks. Moreover, the caliber and area of the blood vessels were assessed. RESULTS: CBCT scans of 32 patients with an average age of 64 ± 12 years (range 34-87 years) were included. Fifty-three percent were female. The median [IQR] caliber of the intramuscular gluteal vessels was 1.47 [1.15-1.88] mm, significantly greater than that of the subcutaneous vessels 1.09 [0.72-1.44] mm (p < 0.001). Vascular density was higher intramuscularly, as 4.5% of the area of the muscle was occupied by blood vessels, as opposed to 0.3% in the adipose tissue. CONCLUSION: The analysis of the CBCT scans showed a higher vascular density and larger vessels intramuscularly. We, therefore, recommend the injection of autologous fat merely to the subcutaneous plane. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE II: This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. BACKGROUND: Comfort and recovery are major concerns of patients seeking aesthetic surgery. This study aimed to assess postoperative pain and recovery after outpatient breast surgery under sedation, intercostal block, and local anaesthesia. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included all consecutive patients who underwent aesthetic breast surgery between April 2021 and August 2022. Epidemiological data, anaesthesia, pain, and patients' satisfaction were systematically assessed with standardized self-assessment questionnaires. RESULTS: Altogether, 48 patients [median (IQR) age: 30 (36-25)] were included. The most frequent surgery was mastopexy. 69% of surgeries involved additional procedures. The mean intercostal block and local anaesthesia time was 15 min. Patients received a median (IQR) of 19 (34-2) mg/kg lidocaine and 2.3 (2.5-2.0) mg/kg ropivacaine. The median (IQR) consumption of propofol and alfentanil was, respectively, 4.89 (5.48-4.26) mg/kg/h and 0.27 (0.39-0.19) µg/kg/min. No conversion to general anaesthesia or unplanned hospital admission occurred. Patients were discharged after a median (IQR) of 2:40 (3:43-1:58) hours. Within the first 24 postoperative hours, 17% required once an antiemetic medication and 38% an opioid. Patients were very satisfied with the anaesthesia and 90% of the patients had not wished more analgesia in the first 24 h. CONCLUSIONS: Aesthetic breast surgery under sedation, intercostal block, and tumescent anaesthesia can safely be performed as an ambulatory procedure and is associated with minimal intra- and postoperative opioid consumption and high patient satisfaction. These data may be used to inform patients and clinicians and improve the overall quality of care. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE IV: This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. BACKGROUND: The medial femoral condyle has become a matter of great interest, thanks to the possibility of harvesting versatile chimeric flaps for reconstruction of metacarpal defects with minimal donor site morbidity. This case stands out because of the complete reconstruction of the metacarpal head, harvesting with a skin paddle for tension-free closure and monitoring, and the use of external fixation for better predictability of the reconstruction and early postoperative mobilization. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 20-year-old male patient who presented with an aneurysmal bone cyst involving the fourth metacarpal bone. The patient underwent resection en bloc of the metaphysis and distal epiphysis of the fourth metacarpal bone, and the bone defect was reconstructed using a 3.4-cm vascularized osteochondral cutaneous graft from the medial femoral condyle. RESULTS: At 1-year follow-up, the patient showed no impairment in hand range of motion and had a Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder and Hand score inferior to that of the male healthy population. Almost 5 years after the procedure, the radiographic examination did not reveal signs of arthrosis. This case report shows that the medial femoral condyle is an excellent and versatile source of vascularized osteochondral grafts for reconstruction of metacarpal defects.

Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) are the most common hard-to-heal ulcers associated with the high humanistic and economic burden. Especially clinically challenging are moderate-to-highly exuding venous leg ulcers, and current management guidelines recommend several different wound dressings for this indication. The study aimed to determine the cost-effectiveness of managing moderate-to-highly exuding venous leg ulcers with superabsorbent wound dressings versus foams dressings in French settings from Haute Autorité de Santé perspective. For evidence synthesis decision-analytic model was developed in line with international and French good modelling practices recommendations. All model inputs were informed by data identified through systematic literature reviews that, in our best knowledge, represent the best available evidence at this moment. According to the prediction from this early stage health economic evaluation, using superabsorbent wound dressings versus foam dressings mix in patients with moderate-to-highly exuding leg ulcers in French settings will result in an improved healing rate of 2.58%, incremental HRQoL of 0.143 QALWs and total direct cost savings of € 435 (USD 473) per patient over six months period. The clinical outcomes results from this evaluation are in line with management guidelines that have recommended superabsorbent wound dressings as a first-line choice in the therapy of moderate-to-highly exuding venous leg ulcers. In addition, this evaluation demonstrates that using superabsorbent wound dressings will also lead to economic savings from the Haute Autorité de Santé perspective.

The cell envelope of Gram-positive bacteria generally comprises two types of polyanionic polymers linked to either peptidoglycan (wall teichoic acids; WTA) or to membrane glycolipids (lipoteichoic acids; LTA). In some bacteria, including Bacillus subtilis strain 168, both WTA and LTA are glycerolphosphate polymers yet are synthesized through different pathways and have distinct but incompletely understood morphogenetic functions during cell elongation and division. We show here that the exolytic sn-glycerol-3-phosphodiesterase GlpQ can discriminate between B. subtilis WTA and LTA. GlpQ completely degraded unsubstituted WTA, which lacks substituents at the glycerol residues, by sequentially removing glycerolphosphates from the free end of the polymer up to the peptidoglycan linker. In contrast, GlpQ could not degrade unsubstituted LTA unless it was partially precleaved, allowing access of GlpQ to the other end of the polymer, which, in the intact molecule, is protected by a connection to the lipid anchor. Differences in stereochemistry between WTA and LTA have been suggested previously on the basis of differences in their biosynthetic precursors and chemical degradation products. The differential cleavage of WTA and LTA by GlpQ reported here represents the first direct evidence that they are enantiomeric polymers: WTA is made of sn-glycerol-3-phosphate, and LTA is made of sn-glycerol-1-phosphate. Their distinct stereochemistries reflect the dissimilar physiological and immunogenic properties of WTA and LTA. It also enables differential degradation of the two polymers within the same envelope compartment in vivo, particularly under phosphate-limiting conditions, when B. subtilis specifically degrades WTA and replaces it with phosphate-free teichuronic acids.

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus is increasing in the Azores. The Azorean population has unique health-related characteristics that emphasize the necessity of developing a predictive model, namely the double insularity phenomena and consanguinity marriages. Therefore, the authors aimed to develop a model, the AzoresDiab model, that assesses the risk of type 2 diabetes for residents of the Azores. METHODS: The variables used for developing the model included the history of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, sex, body mass index, triacylglycerol level, glucose level, and age. This model was developed using binary logistic regression wherein the dependent variable was considered 0 if the patient had type 2 diabetes and 1 if the patient did not. The sample comprised 6834 individuals who were Azores residents, aged over 18 years and who were not missing values for the covariates under study; individuals were included regardless of whether they had a previous diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. Participants were considered to have type 2 diabetes if they had been previously diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or had been prescribed at least one antidiabetic drug listed in the norms of the Portuguese General Directorate of Health and the Portuguese Medical Association. RESULTS: This model showed an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.863 based on internal validation performed with bootstrapping. CONCLUSION: The AzoresDiab model exhibited excellent discrimination of patients with and without type 2 diabetes. The use of predictive risk models will enable the early implementation of disease prevention programs in medium- and high-risk individuals, and public health policies to prevent the onset of the disease in these populations.

Staphylococcus aureus is part of the human nasal and skin microbiomes along with other bacterial commensals and opportunistic pathogens. Nutrients are scarce in these habitats, demanding effective nutrient acquisition and competition strategies. How S. aureus copes with phosphate limitation is still unknown. Wall teichoic acid (WTA), a polyol-phosphate polymer, could serve as a phosphate source, but whether S. aureus can utilize it during phosphate starvation remains unknown. S. aureus secretes a glycerophosphodiesterase, GlpQ, that cleaves a broad variety of glycerol-3-phosphate (GroP) headgroups of deacylated phospholipids, providing this bacterium with GroP as a carbon and phosphate source. Here we demonstrate that GlpQ can also use glycerophosphoglycerol derived from GroP WTA from coagulase-negative Staphylococcus lugdunensis, Staphylococcus capitis, and Staphylococcus epidermidis, which share the nasal and skin habitats with S. aureus Therefore, S. aureus GlpQ is the first reported WTA-hydrolyzing enzyme, or teichoicase, from Staphylococcus Activity assays revealed that unmodified WTA is the preferred GlpQ substrate, and the results from MS analysis suggested that GlpQ uses an exolytic cleavage mechanism. Importantly, GlpQ did not hydrolyze the ribitol-5-phosphate WTA polymers of S. aureus, underscoring its role in interspecies competition rather than in S. aureus cell wall homeostasis or WTA recycling. glpQ expression was strongly up-regulated under phosphate limitation, and GlpQ allowed S. aureus to grow in the presence of GroP WTA as the sole phosphate source. Our study reveals a novel and unprecedented strategy of S. aureus for acquiring phosphate from bacterial competitors under the phosphate-limiting conditions in the nasal or skin environments.

Patients older than 75 years old with multiple myeloma (MM) have shorter survival and are usually treated differently from what features in clinical trials. In this study, the authors characterized the Portuguese population of MM patients above 75 years old, treated between 2009 and 2016. We compared the outcomes obtained with bortezomib-based protocols (BBP), thalidomide-based protocols (TBP), and chemotherapy (CT) using univariate and multivariate controlling for age, performance status, International Staging System score, renal impairment, and number of comorbidities. We retrieved data from 386 patients, treated in 12 hospitals. Three hundred thirty-one cases were analyzed: 119 patients treated with BBP, 65 with TBP, 147 with CT. Median age was 79 years; CT-treated patients were older, had a worse performance status, and have more comorbidities. The median follow-up was 25 months. The 2-year OS was 58% and the median OS was 29.5 months. Patients treated with BBP had more frequently very good partial response (VGPR) or better response, and the subgroup of more fit patients had a significantly longer progression-free survival (PFS) and OS. The most frequently grade 3-4 toxicities were hematologic, infectious, and neurologic and were significantly lower in TBP and CT groups vs BBP. The most common second line was CT, followed by lenalidomide. Patients treated with lenalidomide had a higher probability of VGPR or better and a superior 1-year PFS. Despite the limitations of a retrospective study, our cohort represents the reality of older patients with MM in a western country. The hazard of death or progression was higher for old, fit patients treated, in first line, with CT and with TBP compared with that of BBP.

The facultative pathogen Staphylococcus aureus colonizes the human anterior nares and causes infections of various organ systems. Which carbon, energy, and phosphate sources can be utilized by S. aureus in nutrient-poor habitats has remained largely unknown. We describe that S. aureus secretes a glycerophosphodiesterase (glycerophosphodiester phosphodiesterase, EC 3.1.4.46), GlpQ, degrading the glycerophosphodiester (GPD) head groups of phospholipids such as human phosphatidylcholine (GroPC). Deletion of glpQ completely abolished the GroPC-degrading activity in S. aureus culture supernatants. GroPC has been detected in human tissues and body fluids probably as a result of phospholipid remodelling and degradation. Notably, GroPC promoted S. aureus growth under carbon- and phosphate-limiting conditions in a GlpQ-dependent manner indicating that GlpQ permits S. aureus to utilize GPD-derived glycerol-3-phosphate as a carbon and phosphate sources. Thus, S. aureus can use a broader spectrum of nutrients than previously thought which underscores its capacity to adapt to the highly variable and nutrient-poor surroundings.

The optimal prophylaxis regimen for graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in the setting of mismatched unrelated donor (MMUD) allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (alloHSCT) is not defined. The use of high-dose post-transplant cyclophosphamide (PTCy) in haploidentical transplantation has proven feasible and effective in overcoming the negative impact of HLA disparity on survival. We hypothesized that PTCy could also be effective in the setting of MMUD transplantation. We retrospectively analyzed 86 consecutive adult recipients of alloHSCT in our institution, comparing 2 contemporaneous groups: PTCy MMUD (n = 26) versus matched unrelated donor (MUD) (n = 60). Graft source was primarily peripheral blood (92%). All PTCy MMUD were HLA 7/8 (differences in HLA class I loci in 92% of patients) and received PTCy plus tacrolimus ± mofetil mycophenolate as GVHD prophylaxis. No differences were observed between PTCy MMUD and MUD in the 100-day cumulative incidence of acute GVHD grades II to IV (31% versus 22%, respectively; P = .59) and III to IV (8% versus 10%, P = .67). There was a trend for a lower incidence of moderate to severe chronic GVHD at 1 year after PTCy MMUD in comparison with MUD (22% versus 41%, P = .098). No differences between PTCy MMUD and MUD were found regarding nonrelapse mortality (25% versus 18%, P = .52) or relapse rate (11% versus 19%, P = .18). Progression-free survival and overall survival at 2 years were similar in both cohorts (67% versus 54% [HR, .84; 95% CI, .38 to 1.88; P = .68] and 72% versus 57% [HR, .71; 95% CI, .31 to 1.67; P = .44], respectively). The 2-year cumulative incidence of survival free of moderate to severe chronic GVHD and relapse tended to be higher in the PTCy MMUD group (47% versus 24%; HR, .60; 95% CI, .31 to 1.14; P = .12). We conclude that HLA 7/8 MMUD transplantation using PTCy plus tacrolimus is a suitable alternative for those patients who lack a MUD.

Recent advances in nanomaterials have identified nanogels as an excellent matrix for novel biomimetic catalysts using the molecular imprinting approach. Polymerisable Co-cyclen complexes with phosphonate and carbonate templates have been prepared, fully characterised and used to obtain nanogels that show high activity and turnover with low catalytic load, compared to the free complex, in the hydrolysis of 4-nitrophenyl phosphate, a nerve agent simulant. This work demonstrates that the chemical structure of the template has an impact on the coordination geometry and oxidation state of the metal centre in the polymerisable complex resulting in very significant changes in the catalytic properties of the polymeric matrix. Both pseudo-octahedral cobalt(III) and trigonal-bipyramidal cobalt(II) structures have been used for the synthesis of imprinted nanogels, and the catalytic data demonstrate that: i) the imprinted nanogels can be used in 15 % load and show turnover; ii) the structural differences in the polymeric matrices resulting from the imprinting approach with different templates are responsible for the molecular recognition capabilities and the catalytic activity. Nanogel P1, imprinted with the carbonate template, shows >50 % higher catalytic activity than P2 imprinted with the phosphonate.

OBJECTIVE: The authors describe the 20th known case of cervical cancer with metastasis in an episiotomy scar, being the first case describing an implant of malignant cells in the episiotomy scar associated with glassy cell carcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One case report. RESULTS: We describe the case of a 34-year-old woman, with cervical cancer diagnosed 1 month after delivery. Four months later, a radical hysterectomy was performed. During surgery, a nodule at the site of the episiotomy scar was identified and removed. The histologic diagnosis revealed a glassy cell carcinoma of the cervix, with metastasis in the episiotomy scar. After surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy were performed. The disease progressed rapidly, and the patient died 9 months after surgery. CONCLUSIONS: The implantation of neoplastic cells in the perineum is a potential risk of vaginal delivery, with a 40% mortality rate. It thus seems advisable to avoid vaginal delivery as much as possible when cervical cancer is diagnosed during pregnancy. Given the rarity, there are no studies on the most effective treatment in such situations.

For decades, cells of the Gram-positive bacterial pathogen Staphylococcus aureus were thought to lack a dedicated elongation machinery. However, S. aureus cells were recently shown to elongate before division, in a process that requires a shape elongation division and sporulation (SEDS)/penicillin-binding protein (PBP) pair for peptidoglycan synthesis, consisting of the glycosyltransferase RodA and the transpeptidase PBP3. In ovococci and rod-shaped bacteria, the elongation machinery, or elongasome, is composed of various proteins besides a dedicated SEDS/PBP pair. To identify proteins required for S. aureus elongation, we screened the Nebraska Transposon Mutant Library, which contains transposon mutants in virtually all non-essential staphylococcal genes, for mutants with modified cell shape. We confirmed the roles of RodA/PBP3 in S. aureus elongation and identified GpsB, SsaA, and RodZ as additional proteins involved in this process. The gpsB mutant showed the strongest phenotype, mediated by the partial delocalization from the division septum of PBP2 and PBP4, two penicillin-binding proteins that synthesize and cross-link peptidoglycan. Increased levels of these PBPs at the cell periphery versus the septum result in higher levels of peptidoglycan insertion/crosslinking throughout the entire cell, possibly overriding the RodA/PBP3-mediated peptidoglycan synthesis at the outer edge of the septum and/or increasing stiffness of the peripheral wall, impairing elongation. Consequently, in the absence of GpsB, S. aureus cells become more spherical. We propose that GpsB has a role in the spatio-temporal regulation of PBP2 and PBP4 at the septum versus cell periphery, contributing to the maintenance of the correct cell morphology in S. aureus. IMPORTANCE: Staphylococcus aureus is a Gram-positive clinical pathogen, which is currently the second cause of death by antibiotic-resistant infections worldwide. For decades, S. aureus cells were thought to be spherical and lack the ability to undergo elongation. However, super-resolution microscopy techniques allowed us to observe the minor morphological changes that occur during the cell cycle of this pathogen, including cell elongation. S. aureus elongation is not required for normal growth in laboratory conditions. However, it seems to be essential in the context of some infections, such as osteomyelitis, during which S. aureus cells apparently elongate to invade small channels in the bones. In this work, we uncovered new determinants required for S. aureus cell elongation. In particular, we show that GpsB has an important role in the spatio-temporal regulation of PBP2 and PBP4, two proteins involved in peptidoglycan synthesis, contributing to the maintenance of the correct cell morphology in S. aureus.

OBJECTIVE: Cervical cancer is one of the most common malignancies in pregnancy and one percent of women diagnosed with cervical cancer are pregnant or postpartum at the time of the diagnosis. We discuss how pregnancy will affect the management of cancer, and cancer will affect the management of the pregnancy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Three case reports. RESULTS: We report three cases, with three different approaches of pregnant patient with cervical carcinoma stage IB1, diagnosed below-20 weeks gestation. In two cases, the patients decided to continue the pregnancy. CONCLUSIONS: Cervical cancer in pregnancy is a clinical challenge. Once the diagnosis, the stage and the extent of invasive cervical cancer have been established, a multidisciplinary approach is required. Decisions regarding timing of treatment and delivery require careful considerations, as well as the trimester in which the diagnosis is made. Delaying definitive treatment to improve fetal outcome, may carry an additional risk of tumor progression, although a delay in definitive treatment is regarded as feasible. Delayed treatment is safe in patients with small sized, early stage disease, if there is no evidence of disease progression. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy during pregnancy is still controversial. Cesarean delivery followed by radical hysterectomy is recommended. The effect of cervical cancer on pregnancy outcome is still not clear.

RESUMO

We report the case of a neonate who presented with a left abdominal flank mass and hemodynamic instability signs, with the final diagnosis of left renal vein thrombosis complicated with inferior vena cava thrombosis and perirenal hematoma. We illustrate the importance of an early imaging approach with ultrasound and Doppler evaluation to finally diagnose perinatal renal vein thrombosis and its complications. Teaching Point: An early imaging approach with ultrasound and Doppler evaluation is fundamental to finally diagnose perinatal renal vein thrombosis and its complications.

Adapting our food production chain and increasing the flora and fauna's livelihood in climate change-affected areas using Opuntia is not only theoretical but already exists in practice in many places. This cactus grows in unsuitable soil for most species as it is adapted to arid and semi-arid soils and hot weather. In these regions, Opuntia protects from erosion and contributes to soil health. The usage of this plant as fodder is also discussed, with immense potential in substituting a part of livestock's diet and even increasing the quality of the animal's by-products and decreasing water consumption. This would result in a feed that is low-cost and has a lower environmental impact. It is to be noted that Opuntia has a high potential as an invasive species, with caution always being recommended when dealing with this specie. The high content of specific compounds, such as proline, indicaxanthin, and betanin, found in Opuntia ficus-indica, influence the plant's adaptation to unfavourable conditions. This collective evidence depicts Opuntia as a crop that can battle climate change and ensure food security.

Hypereosinophilia is unusual in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but can occur in severe long-lasting disease, especially in patients with extra-articular manifestations and high titers of rheumatoid factor (RF). The association of RA and hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) remains yet poorly known. We present a case of a 46 years old woman with long-standing untreated RA, that presented to emergency department with severe symptoms of constrictive pericarditis with cardiac tamponade and bilateral pleural effusion, that progressed to cardiac arrest, associated to symmetrical polyarthritis and pruritic erythematous skin papules. She was submitted to urgent pericardial drainage and partial pericardiotomy. Laboratory analyses revealed hypereosinophilia, and elevated inflammatory parameters and immunoglobulin E. The histological study of the pericardium showed results consistent with inflammatory fibrinous pericarditis. Taking into account the presence of some characteristics that are usually present in cases of reactive HES instead of idiopathic HES, and after an intensive diagnostic study, that could rule out other potential causes of secondary HES, the diagnosis of HES associated with RA was made. She started glucocorticoids during hospitalization and methotrexate 15mg per week at the first outpatient rheumatology visit. After 12 weeks of treatment, we considered that she was in clinical and analytical remission, consistently maintaining that after a complete tapering of glucocorticoids. This case illustrates that clinicians should be aware that HES (including severe life-threatening cases) can occur in patients with RA, especially in cases of long-lasting disease with high titters of RF and without treatment, even in the absence of extra-articular features.

BACKGROUND: Cheek contour is a main determinant of facial attractiveness. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between age, sex, and body mass index (BMI) and cheek fat volume in a large cohort to better understand and treat facial aging. METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective review of the archives of the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, University Hospital of Tübingen. Epidemiologic data and medical history were assessed. Cheek superficial and deep fat compartment volumes were measured on magnetic resonance images. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS and SAS statistical software. RESULTS: A total of 87 patients with a mean age of 46 years (range, 18 to 81 years) were included. The superficial and deep fat compartment volumes of the cheek increased with BMI ( P < 0.001 and P = 0.005), but there was no significant relationship between age and volume. The ratio of superficial versus deep fat did not change with age. No significant difference of the superficial or deep fat compartments was found between men and women in a regression analysis ( P = 0.931 and P = 0.057). CONCLUSIONS: Cheek fat volume measurements on magnetic resonance imaging scans using reconstruction software suggest that the fat volume of the cheek increases with BMI but does not change significantly with age. Further studies are needed to elucidate the role of age-related changes of bone structures or sagging of the fat compartments.
