INTRODUCTION: The role of cognition is central to the fear avoidance (FA) model of chronic pain (CP), which emphasizes the importance of catastrophic pain interpretations and has been shown to be applicable to pediatric CP populations. However, while we know that pain catastrophizing plays a distinct role in influencing outcomes for children with CP, we know little about the specifics of how young people with CP experience catastrophizing and worry, as well as their general pain beliefs. OBJECTIVE: To qualitatively explore beliefs about and experiences of worry and pain among a purposeful sample of adolescents with CP. METHODS: Individual semistructured interviews with 12 adolescents (aged 12-17) with varying forms of CP attending an outpatient pain clinic in a general children's hospital. Relevant psychometric measures were administered orally to further inform the data. Data were analyzed using critical realist thematic analysis. RESULTS: Three themes and one subtheme were identified. Themes were 1) the worry ripple: mind, body, and behavior (subtheme: worry content: personal competence and health); 2) the pain mystery: living in a "scribble of black"; and 3) the resist or avoid conundrum. CONCLUSIONS: The findings highlight the need for psychological interventions targeting acceptance of uncertainty and also informing education on mind/body connections in adolescents with CP.

OBJECTIVE: The aim and objective of this study was to assess the knowledge and views of parents on transitional and adolescent care in young adults with epilepsy, and to develop a transitional and adolescent program for epilepsy. METHODS: Data were collected from questionnaires completed by parents during focus groups exploring transitional care and inherent issues for young adults, aged 12-18years, with epilepsy. The questionnaire assessed the current knowledge and views of parents of children with epilepsy on transitional care, and following a presentation on "Transition in Epilepsy" (including themes such as self-advocacy, independent healthcare behavior, sexual health, psychosocial support, educational and vocational planning, health and lifestyle issues) assessed feedback on the proposed model of care in transitional and adolescent care. RESULTS: Data were collected from 34 parents; the majority of parents, 74% (n=25), wish their children to be transitioned and transferred over to the adult epilepsy sites at the age of 18years. Over 82% (n=28) of parents believe the concept of transition should be introduced between the ages of 12-16years. CONCLUSION: This quality improvement initiative identified the need for transitional care to begin at an early age. This study engaged parents in a process to improve adolescent and transitional care for adolescents with epilepsy. This study also highlights the importance of introducing a detailed preparatory phase for a transitional and adolescent care in epilepsy.

There is emerging empirical evidence indicating that differences in self-reported sensory processing may be associated with differences in levels of stress in the adult populations. Understanding how sensory processing relates to stress is of clinical relevance, given the well-established impact of stress on physical health, mental health and well-being. Although several studies have examined the association between sensory processing and stress in adult populations, no published reviews have systematically summarised and synthesised these findings. We aimed to fill this gap by conducting a systematic review to synthesise the available evidence examining the association between self-reported sensory processing and self-reported measures of stress in the adult population. The review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA-S) checklist. Twenty studies were included in the final review. Quality assessment was conducted with the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. Overall, the evidence is strong for an association between differences in sensory processing and self-reported stress in adults. This association was found across a range of populations and measures of stress, in cross-sectional studies. The most commonly used measure of sensory processing was the Highly Sensitive Person Scale, which was consistently moderately associated with a range of measures of stress. The quality of the included studies was generally good, with most meeting four or five out of five criteria. Longitudinal studies are lacking. There is strong evidence for a cross-sectional association between sensory processing and stress in an adult population. Further research, in particular longitudinal studies and studies including clinical populations, would be of benefit in order to establish causality.

W. Van Winkle defined the utilization distribution (UD) as a probability density that gives an animal's relative frequency of occurrence in a two-dimensional (x, y) plane. We extend Van Winkle's work by redefining the UD as the relative frequency distribution of an animal's occurrence in all four dimensions of space and time. We then describe a product kernel model estimation method, devising a novel kernel from the wrapped Cauchy distribution to handle circularly distributed temporal covariates, such as day of year. Using Monte Carlo simulations of animal movements in space and time, we assess estimator performance. Although not unbiased, the product kernel method yields models highly correlated (Pearson's r = 0.975) with true probabilities of occurrence and successfully captures temporal variations in density of occurrence. In an empirical example, we estimate the expected UD in three dimensions (x, y, and t) for animals belonging to each of two distinct bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) social groups in Glacier National Park, Montana, USA. Results show the method can yield ecologically informative models that successfully depict temporal variations in density of occurrence for a seasonally migratory species. Some implications of this new approach to UD modeling are discussed.

Transmission of infectious agents from livestock reservoirs has been hypothesized to cause respiratory disease outbreaks in bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis), and land management policies intended to limit this transmission have proven controversial. This cross-sectional study compares the infectious agents present in multiple populations of bighorn sheep near to and distant from their interface with domestic sheep (O. aries) and domestic goat (Capra hircus) and provides critical baseline information needed for interpretations of cross-species transmission risks. Bighorn sheep and livestock shared exposure to Pasteurellaceae, viral, and endoparasite agents. In contrast, although the impact is uncertain, Mycoplasma sp. was isolated from livestock but not bighorn sheep. These results may be the result of historic cross-species transmission of agents that has resulted in a mosaic of endemic and exotic agents. Future work using longitudinal and multiple population comparisons is needed to rigorously establish the risk of outbreaks from cross-species transmission of infectious agents.
