RESUMO

Despite their remarkable biosynthetic potential, Bacillus subtilis have been widely overlooked. However, their capability to withstand harsh conditions (extreme temperature, Ultraviolet (UV) and γ-radiation, and dehydration) and the promiscuous metabolites they synthesize have created increased commercial interest in them as a therapeutic agent, a food preservative, and a plant-pathogen control agent. Nevertheless, the commercial-scale availability of these metabolites is constrained due to challenges in their accessibility via synthesis and low fermentation yields. In the context of this rising in interest, we comprehensively visualized the antimicrobial peptides produced by B. subtilis and highlighted their prospective applications in various industries. Moreover, we proposed and classified these metabolites produced by the B. subtilis group based on their biosynthetic pathways and chemical structures. The biosynthetic pathway, bioactivity, and chemical structure are discussed in detail for each class. We believe that this review will spark a renewed interest in the often disregarded B. subtilis and its remarkable biosynthetic capabilities.

Carbofuran is a broad-spectrum synthetic pesticide. Its exposure to non-target mammals affects the biological system through the induction of oxidative stress. Since oxidative stress is a major contributing factor to cellular autophagy and senescence, our present investigation determined the impacts of carbofuran-induced oxidative stress on cellular autophagy and senescence. A transmembrane protein, Spinster homolog 1 (Spns1), is involved in autophagic lysosomal metabolism. Its mutation accelerates the cellular senescence and shortens the lifespan. Using a transgenic zebrafish line, expressing fluorescent microtubules-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (EGFP-LC3) at the membrane of the autophagosome, we found that carbofuran affects autophagic lysosomal biogenesis in wild-type zebrafish and exacerbates autophagic defect in spns1-mutant zebrafish. In real-time mortality study, carbofuran has shortened the lifespan of wild-type fish. Nrf2 is a stress-responsive transcription factor that regulates the expression of antioxidant genes (such as gstp1) in the prevention of oxidative stress-mediated cellular damage. To assess the effect of carbofuran on Nrf2 signalling, we established a dual-monitoring transgenic zebrafish line, expressing gstp1 promoter-driven EGFP and mCherry-tagged Neh2 domain of Nrf2. Our results suggested that the exposure of carbofuran has down-regulated both Nrf2 and Gstp1 expressions. Overall, carbofuran affects cellular autophagy and accelerates senescence by enervating the Nrf2 signalling.

Litsea glutinosa (L. glutinosa) is considered an evidence-based medicinal plant for the treatment of cancer, the leading cause of death worldwide. In our study, the in vitro antioxidant and in vivo anticancer properties of an essential ethno-medicinal plant, L. glutinosa, were examined using non-toxic doses and a phytochemical analysis was executed using gas-chromatography-mass-spectrometry. The in vitro antioxidant study of the L. glutinosa methanolic extract (LGBME) revealed a concentration-dependent antioxidant property. The bark extract showed promising antioxidant effects in the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) assay. The strongest antioxidant activity was demonstrated at the maximum concentration (50 µg/mL). The IC50 values of the LGBME and BHT were 5.51 and 5.01 µg/mL, respectively. At the same concentration, the total antioxidant capacity of the LGBME was 0.161 µg/mL and the ferric reducing antioxidant power assay result of the LGBME was 1.783 µg/mL. In the cytotoxicity study, the LD50 of the LGBME and gallic acid were 24.93 µg/mL and 7.23 µg/mL, respectively. In the in vivo anticancer-activity studies, the LGBME, particularly at a dose of 150 mg/kg/bw, showed significant cell-growth inhibition, decreased tumor weight, increased mean survival rate, and upregulated the reduced hematological parameters in EAC (Ehrlich's ascites carcinoma)-induced Swiss albino mice. The highest cell-growth inhibition, 85.76%, was observed with the dose of 150 mg/kg/bw. Furthermore, the upregulation of pro-apoptotic genes (p53, Bax) and the downregulation of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 were observed. In conclusion, LGBME extract has several bioactive phytoconstituents, which confirms the antioxidant and anticancer properties of L. glutinosa.

Carbofuran is a carbamate pesticide, widely used in agricultural practices to increase crop productivity. In mammals, carbofuran is known to cause several untoward effects, such as apoptosis in the hippocampal neuron, oxidative stress, loss of memory and chromosomal anomalies. Most of these effects are implicated with cellular senescence. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the effect of carbofuran on cellular senescence and biological ageing. Spinster homolog 1 (Spns1) is a transmembrane transporter, regulates autolysosomal biogenesis and plays a role in cellular senescence and survival. Using senescence-associated ß-galactosidase staining, we found that carbofuran accelerates the cellular senescence in spns1 mutant zebrafish. The yolk opaqueness, a premature ageing phenotype in zebrafish embryos, was accelerated by carbofuran treatment. In the survival study, carbofuran shortened the life span of spns1 mutant zebrafish. Autophagy is the cellular lysosomal degradation, usually up-regulated in the senescent cells. To know the impact of carbofuran exposure on autophagy progress, we established a double-transgenic zebrafish line, harbouring EGFP-tagged LC3-II and mCherry-tagged Lamp1 on spns1 mutant background, whereas we found, carbofuran exposure synergistically accelerates autolysosome formation with insufficient lysosome-mediated degradation. Our data collectively suggest that carbofuran exposure synergistically accelerates the cellular senescence and affects biological ageing in spns1 defective animals.

OBJECTIVE: Rotavirus A (RVA) is a significant cause of severe diarrheal illness and one of the common causes of death in children under the age of five. This study was aimed at detecting the prevalence of RVA in Pakistan after rotavirus vaccines were introduced. Fecal samples were obtained from 813 children from different hospitals in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, Pakistan, from January 2018 to December 2018. To obtain additional information from the parents / guardians of the children, a standard questionnaire was used. RESULTS: Using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit (ELISA), rotavirus antigen was detected and ELISA positive samples were subjected to reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR). The findings showed 22% prevalence of RVA in children with acute gastroenteritis (AGE) via ELISA and 21% prevalence via RT-PCR in children with AGE. There was no statistically significant difference between gender, age and RVA infections. The winter, spring and fall/autumn seasons were statistically significant for RVA prevalence. CONCLUSION: The present study will provide post vaccine prevalence data for the health policy makers. The implementation of rotavirus vaccines, along with adequate nutrition for babies, clean water supply and maternal hygienic activities during infant feeding, is recommended. Furthermore, continuous surveillance is mandatory in the whole country to calculate the disease burden caused by RVA.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide people in disorder of sex development (DSD) faces multiple barriers while seeking their social rights, particularly healthcare services. We aimed to explore the healthcare opportunities available to them, using patterns of healthcare utilization and difficulties faced by DSD population in accessing healthcare services in Bangladesh. METHODS: Data from a total of 945 DSD population and 71 medical staff were analyzed, collected from three major divisions (Dhaka, Chittagong, and Rajshahi) in Bangladesh during the period of January to December of 2017. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data via face-to-face interviews. Descriptive statistic was used to determine the frequencies of the visit by the DSD population in healthcare facilities as well as to analyze difficulties experienced by the DSD population in getting healthcare services. Multivariate regression analysis was used to explore the association between perceived barriers in getting healthcare services and failures of the DSD population to receive the healthcare services. RESULTS: Present data revealed that around 80% of DSD population sought healthcare services from government healthcare facilities, where the overall success rate in getting healthcare services was less than 50%. The DSD population reported a number of reasons for failures in getting healthcare services, including non-friendly interaction by non-clinical hospital's staff, non-friendly interaction by physicians, public fright as general people do not want to mingle with a DSD person, undesirable excess public interest in DSD individuals, and limitation of the treatment opportunities of hospitals to merely male or female patients. Among the stated reasons, the most frequently reported reason was non-friendly interaction by physicians (50.27%), followed by undesirable excess public interest in DSD individuals (50.16%). CONCLUSION: DSD population in Bangladesh have limited access to healthcare facilities and facing multiple barriers to get healthcare services. Initiatives from the government and social organizations are important to ensure their access to healthcare services.

Zebrafish pou5f3 (previously named pou2), a close homologue of mouse Oct4, encodes a PouV-family transcription factor. pou5f3 has been implicated in diverse aspects of developmental regulation during embryogenesis. In the present study, we addressed the molecular function of Pou5f3 as a transcriptional regulator and the mechanism by which pou5f3 expression is transcriptionally regulated. We examined the influence of effector genes on the expression of the luciferase gene under the control of the upstream 2.1-kb regulatory DNA of pou5f3 (Luc-2.2) in HEK293T and P19 cells. We first confirmed that Pou5f3 functions as a transcriptional activator both in cultured cells and embryos, which confirmed autoregulation of pou5f3 in embryos. It was further shown that Luc-2.2 was activated synergistically by pou5f3 and sox3, which is similar to the co-operative activity of Oct4 and Sox2 in mice, although synergy between pou5f3 and sox2 was less obvious in this zebrafish system. The effects of pou5f3 deletion constructs on the regulation of Luc-2.2 expression revealed different roles for the three subregions of the N-terminal region in Pou5f3 in terms of its regulatory functions and co-operativity with Sox3. Electrophoretic mobility shift assays confirmed that Pou5f3 and Sox3 proteins specifically bind to adjacent sites in the 2.1-kb DNA and that there is an interaction between the two proteins. The synergy with sox3 was unique to pou5f3-the other POU factor genes examined did not show such synergy in Luc-2.2 regulation. Finally, functional interaction was observed between pou5f3 and sox3 in embryos in terms of the regulation of dorsoventral patterning and convergent extension movement. These findings together demonstrate co-operative functions of pou5f3 and sox3, which are frequently coexpressed in early embryos, in the regulation of early development.

BACKGROUND: Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) is a major pest of stored grain-based products, and cause severe damage to cereal grains throughout the world. The present investigation was aimed to determine the pesticidal and pest repellent activities of 2α,3ß,21ß,23,28-penta hydroxyl 12-oleanene against T. castaneum. The compound 2α,3ß,21ß,23,28-penta hydroxyl 12-oleanene is a triterpenoid which was isolated from the roots of Laportea crenulata Gaud. Surface film technique was used for pesticidal screening, whereas, pest repellency property of the triterpenoid was determined by filter paper disc method. RESULTS: At 24 hours of exposure duration, significant mortality records (80% and 86%) were observed at doses 0.88 and 1.77 mg/cm(2). No significant change in mortality records was observed when duration of exposure was increased up to 48 hours. The triterpenoid showed significant repellency activity at doses 0.47 and 0.94 mg/cm(2). CONCLUSION: These data suggest that the triterpenoid 2α,3ß,21ß,23,28-penta hydroxyl 12-oleanene possess both pesticidal and pest repellency activities against T. castaneum and can be used in controlling the pest of grain-based products.

BACKGROUND: Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) is a harmful pest of stored grain and flour-based products in tropical and subtropical region. In the present study, rhizome of Drynaria quercifolia (J. Smith) was evaluated for pesticidal and pest repellency activities against T. castaneum, using surface film method and filter paper disc method, respectively. In addition, activity of the isolated compound 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid was evaluated against the pest. RESULTS: Chloroform soluble fraction of ethanol extract of rhizome of D. quercifolia showed significant pesticidal activity at doses 0.88 to 1.77 mg/cm(2) and significant pest repellency activity at doses 0.94 to 0.23 mg/cm(2). No pesticidal and pest repellency activity was found for petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and methanol soluble fractions of ethanol extract as well as for 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid. CONCLUSION: Considering our findings it can be concluded that chloroform soluble fraction of rhizome of D. quercifolia is useful in controlling T. castaneum of stored grain and flour-based products.

BACKGROUND: Antioxidant compounds like phenols and flavonoids scavenge free radicals and thus inhibit the oxidative mechanisms that lead to control degenerative and other diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the antioxidant activity in vitro, total phenolic and flavonoid contents in ethanol extracts and fractions of Crescentia cujete leaves and stem bark. METHODS: Crescentia cujete leaves and bark crude ethanol extract (CEE) and their partitionates petroleum ether (PEF), chloroform (CHF), ethyl acetate (EAF) and aqueous (AQF) were firstly prepared. Different established testing methods, such as 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radical, ferric reducing power (FRP), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) assays were used to detect the antioxidant activity. Further, the total yield, total phenolic (TPC) and total flavonoid contents (TFC) of CEE and all the fractions were determined. Ethanol extracts of both leaves and stem bark were also subjected to preliminary phytochemical screening to detect the presence of secondary metabolites, using standard phytochemical methods (Thin layer chromatography and spray reagents). RESULTS: Phytochemical screening of crude ethanol extract of both leaves and stem bark revealed the presence of steroids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, glycosides and terpenoids. All the fractions and CEE of leaves and bark exhibited antioxidant activities, however, EAF of leaves showing the highest antioxidant activity based on the results of DPPH, FRP and TAC assay tests. The above fraction has shown the significant DPPH scavenging activity (IC50 = 8.78 µg/ml) when compared with standard ascorbic acid (IC50 =7.68 µg/ml). The TAC and FRP activities increased with increasing crude extract/fractions content. The TPC (371.23 ± 15.77 mg GAE/g extract) and TFC (144.64 ± 5.82 mg QE/g extract) of EAF of leaves were found significantly higher as compared to other solvent fractions for both leaves and bark. TPC were highly correlated with the antioxidant activity (R2 = 0.9268 and 0.8515 in DPPH test for leaves and bark, respectively). CONCLUSION: The results of the study show that leaves of C. cujete possesses significant free radical scavenging properties compared with stem bark and a clear correlation exists between the antioxidant activity and phenolic content.

The biological synthesis of nanoparticles is an emerging field of study that seeks to synthesize nanoparticles using non-chemical mechanisms such as microorganisms, plants, and animal blood serum. Among these, plants have gained particular attention due to their ease of handling, availability, and ability to synthesize a wide range of nanoparticles. Therefore, the current study aimed to fabricate the silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Chinese medicinal plants (CMP) for their possible toxicity in common carp fish (Cyprinus carpio). For this purpose, CMP was dried, ground, and used as a bio-reductive agent. The fabricated AgNPs were characterized and a well dispersed AgNPs were obtained. Moreover, the C. carpio was exposed to the AgNPs for bioaccumulation and histological alterations. The obtained findings revealed that the AgNPs were mostly accumulated in the intestines followed by the gills, muscles, liver, and brain. The accumulated AgNPs caused histological alterations in gills and intestines at the highest concentration (0.08 mg/L). However, very less alterations were caused by the lowest concentration, especially in the intestine. In conclusion, further in-depth research is needed to determine the risks associated with the usage of nanoparticles to reveal their harmful impacts on fish and the aquatic environment. HIGHLIGHTS: The biological fabrication of AgNPs is considered eco-friendly. Chinese medicinal plants play a significant role in AgNPs synthesis. AgNPs have excellent antibacterial activity. AgNPs are bioaccumulated in various organs of fish.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a severe impact on various aspects of everyday life, including healthcare provision. The aim of the scoping review was to collate, summarize, and discuss this literature, in light of the impact COVID-19 had on Primary care. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) four-stage process framework for reporting was followed. A total of 31 studies were included in this review. Based upon our review we found COVID-19 pandemic on Primary Care, has made significant effects on 1) service redesign, 2) long-term illness care provision, 3) healthcare staff well-being and 4) the post-pandemic future of Primary Care. The COVID-19 outbreak has demonstrated, how a pandemic can drastically change the process of healthcare provision within the community, as evidenced by the change in consultation styles with patients, the impact on the physical and mental wellbeing of health workers, a shift from isolated practice to teamwork, as well as the ability of healthcare workers to seek prompt help with their health. Studies have demonstrated progress in knowledge and experience gained by healthcare workers when tackling COVID-19, and how these can be implemented in possible future pandemics affecting Primary Care, however, further research is required within this sphere.

This paper attempts to evaluate the impact of massive infectious and contagious diseases and its final impact on the economic performance anywhere and anytime. We are considering to evaluate the case of Wuhan, China. We are taking in consideration the case of COVID-19 to be evaluated under a domestic, national, and international level impact. In this paper, we also propose a new simulator to evaluate the impact of massive infections and contagious diseases on the economic performance subsequently. This simulator is entitled "The Impact of Pandemics on the Economic Performance Simulator (IPEP-Simulator)" Hence, this simulator tries to show a macro and micro analysis with different possible scenarios simultaneously. Finally, the IPEP-Simulator was applied to the case of Wuhan-China respectively.

Paederia foetida is valued for its folk medicinal properties. This research aimed to assess the acute toxicity, hypoglycemic and anti-hemostasis properties of the methanolic extract of P. foetida leaves (PFLE). Acute toxicity of PFLE was performed on a mice model. Hypoglycemic and anti-hemostasis properties of PFLE were investigated on normal and streptozotocin-induced mice models. Deep learning, molecular docking, density functional theory, and molecular simulation techniques were employed to understand the underlying mechanisms through in silico study. Oral administration of PFLE at a dosage of 300 µg/kg body weight (BW) showed no signs of toxicity. Treatment with PFLE (300 µg/kg/BW) for 14 days resulted in a hypoglycemic condition and a 30.47% increase in body weight. Additionally, PFLE mixed with blood exhibited a 44.6% anti-hemostasis effect. Deep learning predicted the inhibitory concentration (pIC50, nM) of Cleomiscosins against SGLT2 and FXa to be 7.478 and 6.017, respectively. Molecular docking analysis revealed strong binding interactions of Cleomiscosins with crucial residues of the target proteins, exhibiting binding energies of -8.2 kcal/mol and -7.1 kcal/mol, respectively. ADME/Tox predictions indicated favorable pharmacokinetic properties of Cleomiscosins, and DFT calculations of frontier molecular orbitals analyzed the stability and reactivity of these compounds. Molecular simulation dynamics, principal component analysis and MM-PBSA calculation demonstrated the stable, compact, and rigid nature of the protein-ligand complexes. The methanolic PFLE exhibited significant hypoglycemic and anti-hemostasis properties. Cleomiscosin may have inhibitory properties for the development of novel drugs to manage diabetes and thrombophilia in the near future.

In the present study, we determined the developmental toxicity of endosulfan at an elevated ambient temperature using the zebrafish animal model. Zebrafish embryos of various developmental stages were exposed to endosulfan through E3 medium, raised under two selected temperature conditions (28.5 °C and an elevated temperature of 35 °C), and monitored under the microscope. Zebrafish embryos of very early developmental stages (cellular cleavage stages, such as the 64-cell stage) were highly sensitive to the elevated temperature as 37.5% died and 47.5% developed into amorphous type, while only 15.0% of embryos developed as normal embryos without malformation. Zebrafish embryos that were exposed concurrently to endosulfan and an elevated temperature showed stronger developmental defects (arrested epiboly progress, shortened body length, curved trunk) compared to the embryos exposed to either endosulfan or an elevated temperature. The brain structure of the embryos that concurrently were exposed to the elevated temperature and endosulfan was either incompletely developed or malformed. Furthermore, the stress-implicated genes hsp70, p16, and smp30 regulations were synergistically affected by endosulfan treatment under the elevated thermal condition. Overall, the elevated ambient temperature synergistically enhanced the developmental toxicity of endosulfan in zebrafish embryos.

Zebrafish pou2, encoding the class V POU transcription factor orthologous to mouse Oct-3/4, has been implicated in different aspects of development, such as dorsoventral patterning, endoderm formation, and brain regionalization, by analyzing pou2 mutant embryos. In the present study, we first conducted overexpression of pou2-modified genes by mRNA injection, and found that pou2 and its active form (vp-pou2) augmented mesoderm formation and suppressed endoderm specification, whereas repressive pou2 (en-pou2) affected the formation of the mesoderm and endoderm in a different manner. To avoid complications that might arise from different pou2 functions during the course of development, we used a transgenic line harboring inducible en-pou2 (HEP), which could function in a dominant-negative manner. We found that suppressing endogenous pou2 by HEP induction at the mid-blastula stage enhanced endoderm development at the expense of mesoderm, whereas the same treatment in the late blastulae promoted mesoderm formation and suppressed the endoderm specification. Further analyses using HEP induction revealed that, from late epiboly to early somitogenesis, pou2 regulated additional developmental aspects, such as brain regionalization, heart development, and tail formation. Our findings suggest that Pou2 functions in multiple aspects of vertebrate development, especially in the binary decision of the mesendoderm to mesoderm and endoderm in different ways depending on the developmental stage.

BACKGROUND: Medically unnecessary caesarean section (CS) is now an ongoing concern worldwide including in Bangladesh. This intensifies the occurrence of adverse maternal and child health outcomes. We investigated the associations of CS with some basic health and behavioural outcomes of the mothers and their children in Bangladesh. METHODS: We conducted a community-based case-control study from May to August 2019. A total of 600 mother-child dyads were interviewed using a structured questionnaire, 300 of them had CS, and 300 had vaginal delivery (VD) in their most recent live births. The exposure variable was the mode of delivery, classified as 1 if mothers had CS and 0 if mothers had VD. The outcome variables were a group of health and behavioural problems of the mothers and their children. Multivariate or multiple logistic regression model, separately for each health and behavioural outcome, was used to determine the effect of exposure variable on outcome variable after adjusting for possible confounders. RESULTS: The mean age and weight of mothers were 25.1 years and 53.1 kg, respectively. Likelihoods of headache, after delivery hip pain, problem of daily activities, and breastfeeding problem were reported higher among mothers who had CS in their most recent live birth than mothers who had VD. Similarly, children who were born through the CS operation were more likely to report breathing problem, frequent illness, lower food demand and lower hours of sleeping. CONCLUSION: The use of CS increases the risks of health and behavioural problems of the mothers and their children. Policies and programs to avoid medically unnecessary CS and increase awareness over its adverse effects are important.

Hydrolytic bacteria are essential for the degradation of lignocellulose to produce biogas and organic fertilizers. In this study, sheep manure was used as substrate, and sheep manure slurry, yak rumen fluid and slurry from a biogas reactor (SBR) were used as inocula in single-stage anaerobic digestion. The SBR and rumen fluid inocula increased biogas production by 23% and 43%, respectively, when compared to solely sheep manure in the single-stage anaerobic digestion. The two-stage anaerobic digestion, with yak rumen fluid as inoculum in the hydrolytic reactor, increased the biogas production by 59, 86, and 58% compared with the control. Microbial analysis of the effluent revealed that yak rumen fluid contained hydrolytic bacteria such as Proteiniphilum, Jeotgalibaca, Fermentimonas, and Atopostipes to enhance the degradation of sheep manure and increase biogas production. It was concluded that yak rumen fluid, rich in hydrolytic bacteria, increases the degradability of sheep manure and improves production of volatile fatt acids and biogas.

Ticks are blood-feeding ecto-parasites that have a cosmopolitan distribution in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Ticks cause economic losses in the form of reduced blood, meat and dairy products, as well as pathogen transmission. Different acaricides such as organochlorines, organophosphates, formamidines (e.g. amitraz), synthetic pyrethroids, macrocyclic lactones, fipronil, and fluazuron are currently used sequentially or simultaneously to control tick infestations. Most acaricide treatments now face increasingly high chances of failure, due to the resistance selection in different tick populations against these drugs. Acaricide resistance in ticks can be developed in different ways, including amino acid substitutions that result in morphological changes in the acaricide target, metabolic detoxification, and reduced acaricide entry through the outer layer of the tick body. The current literature brings a plethora of information regarding the use of different acaricides for tick control, resistance selection, analysis of mutations in target sites, and resistance mitigation. Alternatives such as synergistic use of different acaricides, plant-derived phytochemicals, fungi as biological control agents, and anti-tick vaccines have been recommended to avoid and mitigate acaricide resistance. The purpose of this review was to summarize and discuss different acaricides applied for tick control, their mechanisms of action and resistance selection, genetic polymorphisms in their target molecules, as well as the approaches used for diagnosis and mitigation of acaricide resistance, specifically in Rhipicephalus microplus ticks.

During in situ biogas up-gradation by supplying hydrogen from an external source and enrichment of hydrogenotrophic methanogens, high pressure of H2 negatively affects hydrolytic and fermentative activities. To overcome this problem, the present study aimed to enrich the hydrogenotrophic methanogens by optimization of various parameters associated with gas recirculation along-with hydrogen supply from the external source. Due to recirculation of gases and supplied hydrogen, methane generation was two-fold higher in the optimal condition than in conventional anaerobic digestion, with the highest methane content of 99%. Additionally, the hydrogenotrophic methanogens were enriched, with a decrease in acetoclastic methanogens and an increase in Bathyarchaeia population, which utilizes H2 and CO2 to produce acetate and lactate as end products. The study concludes that recirculation increases methane production by converting H2 and CO2 into methane and enhances the degradation of organic matter left over undigested in the hydrolytic reactor.
