RESUMO

Conventional antiferroelectric materials with atomic-scale anti-aligned dipoles undergo a transition to a ferroelectric (FE) phase under strong electric fields. The moiré superlattice formed in the twisted stacks of van der Waals crystals exhibits polar domains alternating in moiré length with anti-aligned dipoles. In this moiré domain antiferroelectic (MDAF) arrangement, the distribution of electric dipoles is distinguished from that of two-dimensional FEs, suggesting dissimilar domain dynamics. Here we performed an operando transmission electron microscopy investigation on twisted bilayer WSe2 to observe the polar domain dynamics in real time. We find that the topological protection, provided by the domain wall network, prevents the MDAF-to-FE transition. As one decreases the twist angle, however, this transition occurs as the domain wall network disappears. Exploiting stroboscopic operando transmission electron microscopy on the FE phase, we measure a maximum domain wall velocity of 300 µm s-1. Domain wall pinnings by various disorders limit the domain wall velocity and cause Barkhausen noises in the polarization hysteresis loop. Atomic-scale analysis of the pinning disorders provides structural insight on how to improve the switching speed of van der Waals FEs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cyclin-dependent kinase 4 and 6 (CDK4/6) inhibitors have been established as a standard treatment for hormone receptor (HR)-positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative advanced breast cancer (ABC); however, predictive biomarkers with translational relevance have not yet been elucidated. METHODS: Data from postmenopausal women who received the CDK4/6 inhibitor palbociclib and letrozole for HR-positive, HER2-negative ABC from tertiary referral centers were analyzed (N = 221; exploratory cohort). Pre- and on-treatment neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and derived NLR (dNLR; neutrophil/[leukocyte-neutrophil]) were correlated with survival outcomes. Data from the PALOMA-2 (NCT01740427) and PALOMA-3 studies (NCT01942135) involving patients treated with endocrine treatment with or without palbociclib were also analyzed (validation cohort). Prospectively enrolled patients (N = 20) were subjected to immunophenotyping with circulating immune cells to explore the biological implications of immune cell dynamics. RESULTS: In the exploratory cohort, palbociclib administration significantly reduced leukocyte, neutrophil, and lymphocyte counts on day 1 of cycle 2. Although the baseline dNLR was not significantly associated with progression-free survival (PFS), higher on-treatment dNLRs were associated with worse PFS (hazard ratio = 3.337, P < 0.001). In the PALOMA-2 validation cohort, higher on-treatment dNLRs were associated with inferior PFS in patients treated with palbociclib and letrozole (hazard ratio = 1.498, P = 0.009), and reduction in the dNLR after treatment was predictive of a survival benefit (hazard ratio = 1.555, P = 0.026). On-treatment dNLRs were also predictive of PFS following palbociclib and fulvestrant treatment in the PALOMA-3 validation cohort. Using flow cytometry analysis, we found that the CDK4/6 inhibitor prevented T cell exhaustion and diminished myeloid-derived suppressor cell frequency. CONCLUSIONS: On-treatment dNLR significantly predicted PFS in patients with HR-positive, HER2-negative ABC receiving palbociclib and endocrine treatment. Additionally, we observed putative systemic immune responses elicited by palbociclib, suggesting immunologic changes upon CDK4/6 inhibitor treatment.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Conduction system pacing (CSP) is observed to produce greater improvements in echocardiographic and hemodynamic parameters as compared to conventional biventricular pacing (BiVP). However, whether these surrogate endpoints directly translate to improvements in hard clinical outcomes such as death and heart failure hospitalization (HFH) with CSP remains uncertain as studies reporting these outcomes are scarce. The aim of this meta-analysis was to analyze the existing data to compare the clinical outcomes of CSP versus BiVP. METHODS: A systematic search of the Embase and PubMed database was performed for studies comparing CSP and BiVP for patients indicated to receive a CRT device. The coprimary endpoints were all-cause mortality and HFH. Other secondary outcomes included change in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), change in NYHA class, and increase in NYHA class ≥1. A random-effects model was chosen a priori to analyze the composite effects given the anticipated heterogeneity of included trials. RESULTS: Twenty-one studies (4 randomized and 17 observational) were identified reporting either primary outcome and were included in the meta-analysis. In total 1960 patients were assigned to CSP and 2367 to BiVP. Median follow-up time was 10.1 months (ranging 2-33 months). CSP was associated with a significant reduction in all-cause mortality (odds ratio [OR] 0.68, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.56-0.83) and HFH (OR 0.52, 95% CI: 0.44-0.63). Mean improvement in LVEF was also greater with CSP (mean difference 4.26, 95% CI: 3.19-5.33). Reduction in NYHA class was significantly greater with CSP (mean difference -0.36, 95% CI: -0.49 to -0.22) and the number of patients with an increase in NYHA class ≥1 was significantly greater with CSP (OR 2.02, 95% CI: 1.70-2.40). CONCLUSIONS: CSP was associated with a significant reduction in all-cause mortality and HFH when compared to conventional BiVP for CRT. Further large-scale randomized trials are needed to verify these observations.

RESUMO

The formation of pseudocapsule type homo- and heteromultinuclear complexes of calix[6]-mono-crown-5 (H4L) encapsulating from 4 to 6 alkali metal ions is reported. H4L reacts with KOH to yield a hexanuclear potassium(I) complex [K6(HL)2(CH3OH)2]·CHCl3 (1) in which two bowl-shaped tripotassium(I) complex units are linked in a rim-to-rim fashion via the interligand C-H···π interactions. In the same reaction condition, RbOH afforded a tetranuclear rubidium(I) complex [Rb4(H2L)2(CH3OH)2(µ-H2O)2]·6CHCl3 (2). In 2, again two bowl-shaped dirubidium(I) complex units are held together by two bridging water molecules and C-H···π interactions that act as a glue to generate such an elegant pseudocapsule. Interestingly, a mixture of KOH and RbOH yielded a heterotetranuclear complex [K2Rb2(H2L)2(CH3OH)2(µ-H2O)2]·6CHCl3 (3). Similarly, two heterodinuclear bowl units [KRb(H2L)] in 3 are held together by two bridging water molecules and C-H···π interactions to form a heteromultinuclear pseudocapsule. In each heterodinuclear K+/Rb+ bowl unit of 3, Rb+ occupies the center of the crown loop while K+ locates inside the calix rim. Consequently, the proposed host discriminates not only on the types and numbers of the metal ions but also on their positional preferences in forming pseudocapsules. Solution studies by nuclear magnetic resonance and electrospray ionization-mass support the heterometallic (K+/Rb+) complexation by showing the superior binding affinity of Rb+ over K+ toward the crown loop. These results demonstrate how the metal-driven pseudocapsules are formed and present a new perspective on the metallosupramolecules of the calixcrown scaffold.

RESUMO

Chiral metal-organic frameworks (CMOFs) and solid-state [2 + 2] photocyclization have been explored as independent areas in crystal engineering. We herein report the photoreactive CMOFs that undergo a [2 + 2] photocycloaddition reaction for the first time. Through the incorporation of a dipyridyl olefin ligand, 1,4-bis[2-(4-pyridyl)ethenyl]benzene, and d-camphoric acid or l-camphoric acid, we constructed a pair of homochiral Zn(II) CMOFs (d-1 or l-1) with a two-dimensional sql topology via a two-step procedure to avoid racemization. Both d-1 and l-1 were photoinert due to the large olefin bond separation. The removal of the solvent molecules between layers enabled them (d-1a and l-1a) to undergo [2 + 2] cycloaddition reactions; d-1a is more reactive (70%) than l-1a (20%) probably due to proper desolvation-induced rearrangement. The photoluminescence properties are also discussed. This work presents a new perspective on photoreactive homochiral network materials with diverse topologies and applications.

RESUMO

In the supramolecule area, the fabrication of a new concept called polyrotaxanes or poly-pseudo-rotaxanes remains challenging. We herein report the formation of a poly-pseudo-rotaxane in which the same salt-type guest serves both linking and threading in the resulting structure. The combination of A1/A2-thiopyridyl pillar[5]arene (L) and silver(I) trifluoroacetate in CHCl3/CH3OH afforded a one-dimensional (1D) poly-pseudo-rotaxane. In this structure, to our surprise, the AgCF3CO2 guest not only links the di-armed L ligands via an infinite -L-Ag-L-Ag- arrangement but also threads into a pillar[5]arene cavity in a dimer form, (AgCF3CO2)2. In contrast, the same reaction in CH2Cl2/CH3OH yielded a simple 1D coordination polymer because an included CH2Cl2 molecule in the pillar[5]arene cavity prevents the threading of the silver(I) trifluoroacetate guest. Comparative 1H- and 19F-NMR studies support the solvent-dependent poly-pseudo-rotaxane formation at a lower concentration of L.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Implantable loop recorders (ILR) are used to screen for atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients with cryptogenic stroke (CS). However, there is limited real-world data regarding the long-term rate of AF detection using ILR and management consequences in patients with CS. The objective is to assess the rate of AF detection in patients with CS in a real-world study over 36 months of follow-up and its consequences on stroke prevention. METHODS: This retrospective study included patients with an ILR placed for CS at Baylor College of Medicine and Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center between January 2014 and July 2021. The primary outcome was AF detection in patients with ILR. The secondary outcome was the rate of subsequent strokes after ILR placement in patients with or without diagnosed AF. The AF detection rate in our cohort was compared to the rate in CRYSTAL-AF Trial at 36-month follow-up. The impact of AF detection on clinical management was examined. RESULTS: We identified 225 patients. 51.1% were women and 38.2% African American. Among 85 patients with ILR labeled AF, 43 patients had true AF, and 42 had incorrectly labeled AF (48.3% false positive). The estimated AF detection rate at 36 months follow-up was 28.6% (95% CI, 26.6%-30.6%). 58.1% of patients with AF were initiated on oral anticoagulation, 80.0% of whom were started on a direct oral anticoagulant. 13.8% of patients had recurrent strokes after ILR implantation; 4 of whom were diagnosed with AF. CONCLUSION: Compared to CRYSTAL-AF, the AF detection rate in our cohort is similar, but this cohort includes a higher proportion of female and African American patients. Most patients with recurrent strokes after ILR implant did not have AF during 36 months of monitoring.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To validate a stratification method using an inverse of treatment decision rules that can classify non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients in real-world treatment records. METHODS: (1) To validate the index classifier against the TNM 7th edition, we analyzed electronic health records of NSCLC patients diagnosed from 2011 to 2015 in a tertiary referral hospital in Seoul, Korea. Predictive accuracy, stage-specific sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, F1 score, and c-statistic were measured. (2) To apply the index classifier in an administrative database, we analyzed NSCLC patients in Korean National Health Insurance Database, 2002-2013. Differential survival rates among the classes were examined with the log-rank test, and class-specific survival rates were compared with the reference survival rates. RESULTS: (1) In the validation study (N = 1375), the overall accuracy was 93.8% (95% CI: 92.5-95.0%). Stage-specific c-statistic was the highest for stage I (0.97, 95% CI: 0.96-0.98) and the lowest for stage III (0.82, 95% CI: 0.77-0.87). (2) In the application study (N = 71,593), the index classifier showed a tendency for differentiating survival probabilities among classes. Compared to the reference TNM survival rates, the index classification under-estimated the survival probability for stages IA, IIIB, and IV, and over-estimated it for stages IIA and IIB. CONCLUSION: The inverse of the treatment decision rules has a potential to supplement a routinely collected database with information encoded in the treatment decision rules to classify NSCLC patients. It requires further validation and replication in multiple clinical settings.

RESUMO

Recently, with the trend of redundancy design, the importance of synchronous motion control of multiple motors has been emphasized in various fields such as automotive, construction, and industrial engineering. Therefore, this paper proposed a novel passive decomposition-based robust synchronous control strategy for a multi-motor system, guaranteeing that both the tracking error of each motor and the synchronous error between motors are ultimately and synchronously bounded, even under the presence of parametric uncertainty and unstructured external disturbance. Specifically, a passive decomposition is used to obtain the locked and shape systems from the original system, and then a sliding mode control system along with robust compensations is designed for each decomposed system to achieve the precise synchronous motion control of the n number of motors. Here, the controller for the locked system reduces the tracking errors of motors for a given desired trajectory, while the controller for the shaped system decreases the synchronous errors between motors. Furthermore, the control system is generally and conveniently formulated to adopt the arbitrary n number of motors that must track a given desired trajectory and be synchronized. Compared to other related studies, this work especially focused on increasing the robustness of the entire system using both high-order sliding mode control and two separate compensation terms for model uncertainty and unstructured external disturbance. Finally, to validate the effectiveness of the proposed synchronous control strategy, the extensive experimental studies on two/three/four-geared BLDC motors with a high dead-zone effect were conducted, and we also compared the synchronous control performance of the proposed control strategy with the other representative control approaches, a master-slave control scheme and an independent one to address the superiority of the proposed control system. Regardless of the number of motors, due to the robustness of the control system, it is found that the proposed control ensures the tracking and synchronous errors are less than 1 degree for the sine-wave trajectory while it guarantees that the errors are below 1.5 degree for the trapezoidal trajectory. This control approach can be widely and generally applied to the multiple motor control required in various engineering fields.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study examined a system-level perspective to investigate the changes in the whole trunk and head postures while sitting with various lower extremity postures. BACKGROUND: Sitting biomechanics has focused mainly on the lumbar region only, whereas the anatomy literature has suggested various links from the head and lower extremity. METHOD: Seventeen male participants were seated in six lower extremity postures, and the trunk kinematics and muscle activity measures were captured for 5 s. RESULTS: Changes in the trunk-thigh angle and the knee angle affected the trunk and head postures and muscle recruitment patterns significantly, indicating significant interactions between the lower extremity and trunk while sitting. Specifically, the larger trunk-thigh angle (T135°) showed more neutral lumbar lordosis (4.0° on average), smaller pelvic flexion (1.8°), smaller head flexion (3.3°), and a less rounded shoulder (1.7°) than the smaller one (T90°). The smaller knee angle (K45°) revealed a more neutral lumbar lordosis (6.9°), smaller pelvic flexion (9.2°), smaller head flexion (2.6°), and less rounded shoulder (2.4°) than the larger condition (K180°). The more neutral posture suggested by the kinematic measures confirmed significantly less muscular recruitment in the trunk extensors, except for a significant antagonistic co-contraction. CONCLUSION: The lower and upper back postures were more neutral, and back muscle recruitment was lower with a larger trunk-thigh angle and a smaller knee angle, but at the cost of antagonistic co-contraction. APPLICATION: The costs and benefits of each lower extremity posture can be used to design an ergonomic chair and develop an improved sitting strategy.

RESUMO

Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors are effective against BRCA1/2-mutated cancers through synthetic lethality. Unfortunately, most cases ultimately develop acquired resistance. Therefore, enhancing PARP inhibitor sensitivity and preventing resistance in those cells are an unmet clinical need. Here, we investigated the ability of paraspeckle component 1 (PSPC1), as an additional synthetic lethal partner with BRCA1/2, to enhance olaparib sensitivity in preclinical models of BRCA1/2-mutated breast and ovarian cancers. In vitro, the combined olaparib and PSPC1 small interfering RNA (siRNA) exhibited synergistic anti-proliferative activity in BRCA1/2-mutated breast and ovarian cancer cells. The combination therapy also demonstrated synergistic tumor inhibition in a xenograft mouse model. Mechanistically, olaparib monotherapy increased the expressions of p-ATM and DNA-PKcs, suggesting the activation of a DNA repair pathway, whereas combining PSPC1 siRNA with olaparib decreased the expressions of p-ATM and DNA-PKcs again. As such, the combination increased the formation of γH2AX foci, indicating stronger DNA double-strand breaks. Subsequently, these DNA-damaged cells escaped G2/M checkpoint activation, as indicated by the suppression of p-cdc25C (Ser216) and p-cdc2 (Tyr15) after combination treatment. Finally, these cells entered mitosis, which induced increased apoptosis. Thus, this proves that PSPC1 inhibition enhances olaparib sensitivity by targeting DNA damage response in our preclinical model. The combination of olaparib and PSPC1 inhibition merits further clinical investigation to enhance PARP inhibitor efficacy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The vegan food market is one of the fastest growing markets worldwide for ethical, environmental, and health reasons. However, vegan food is still relatively unfamiliar to Korean consumers. Their liking for vegan burger patties is in the early phase of development; thus, it is necessary to place the patties in an appropriate context or 'frame'. RESULTS: We investigated consumer (n = 269) liking for vegan patty under different frame conditions. The implicit frame condition was manipulated by evaluating a target sample along with four other vegan or meat samples. Consumers were further divided into two explicit groups that were exposed to or not exposed to a video clip on ethical food consumption before evaluating the samples. A control group evaluated the target sample only. The results showed that the implicit frame formed during the sample evaluation had a stronger influence than the explicit frame created by the video clip. Perceived familiarity with the target vegan patty drastically decreased when evaluated with other meat samples and negatively influenced the liking for it. CONCLUSION: The findings show that the type of samples evaluated sequentially together with the target vegan burger patty within the same session had a greater effect on the target sample than the information provided explicitly. To introduce the target vegan burger patty effectively to consumers who are relatively new to the vegan food product category such as Koreans, it is suggested that the product should be positioned under the category of vegan foods rather than the category of conventional burger patties. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

Text-to-SQL is a task that converts natural language questions into SQL queries. Recent text-to-SQL models employ two decoding methods: sketch-based and generation-based, but each has its own shortcomings. The sketch-based method has limitations in performance as it does not reflect the relevance between SQL elements, while the generation-based method may increase inference time and cause syntactic errors. Therefore, we propose a novel decoding method, Hybrid decoder, which combines both methods. This reflects inter-SQL element information and defines elements that can be generated, enabling the generation of syntactically accurate SQL queries. Additionally, we introduce a Value prediction module for predicting values in the WHERE clause. It simplifies the decoding process and reduces the size of vocabulary by predicting values at once, regardless of the number of conditions. The results of evaluating the significance of Hybrid decoder indicate that it improves performance by effectively incorporating mutual information among SQL elements, compared to the sketch-based method. It also efficiently generates SQL queries by simplifying the decoding process in the generation-based method. In addition, we design a new evaluation measure to evaluate if it generates syntactically correct SQL queries. The result demonstrates that the proposed model generates syntactically accurate SQL queries.

RESUMO

The formation of a cyclic dimer complex (1) and a poly-pseudo-rotaxane (2) of a racemic A1/A2-thiopyridyl pillar[5]arene (rac-L) with different chirality is reported. A one-pot reaction of rac-L with HgCl2 afforded a heterochiral cyclic dimer complex, [Hg2(pR-L)(pS-L)Cl4]·8CH2Cl2 (1), in which two Hg2+ atoms and one (pR-L)/(pS-L) enantiomeric pair form a [2:2] metallacycle via a metal coordination-based cyclization. Interestingly, the same reaction in the presence of the linear dinitrile guest, CN(CH2)8CN (G), yielded a one-dimensional poly-pseudo-rotaxane, {[Hg(G@pR-L)Cl2][Hg(G@pS-L)Cl2]}n (2), probably due to the rigidified ligand structure resulting from the dinitrile guest (G) threading. In 2, pR-L and pS-L generate two separated homochiral poly-pseudo-rotaxanes in a crystal. Both products are new members of the pillararene-derivative family. This study improves our understanding of self-assembly in nature and leads to this approach being an engineering tool for the construction of mechanically interlocked supramolecules.

RESUMO

1,4-Bridged calix[6]-mono-crown-4 (H4L) capable of metal binding was employed, and the influence of solvent variations on the formation of alkali metal complexes (1-6) was investigated. In the crystal, the bowl-shaped H4L host contains one water molecule in a good-fit fashion via H-bonds. When the H4L host was reacted with alkali metal hydroxides (M = Na, K, Rb, and Cs) in chloroform/methanol (solvent A), anion-free dinuclear bowl-shaped complexes of type [M2(H2L)] were isolated regardless of the metal ions. In the dinuclear bowl complexes 1-4, two metal ions (M1 and M2) show different binding behaviors: one (M1) locates inside the pocket like an "egg-in-nest", and the other (M2) positions above the M1 interacting with the calix rim. When chloroform/acetonitrile (solvent B) was used in potassium(I) complexation, interestingly, an elegant pseudo-capsule-type quadrunuclear complex 5 was isolated. In 5, two dipotassium(I) bowls in a rim-to-rim arrangement are triply bridged by one water and two acetonitrile molecules like a magic glue. However, in dichloromethane/methanol (solvent C), cesium(I) yielded an infinite product 6 in which dicesium(I) bowls are linked by cation-π interactions, giving rise to a one-dimensional zigzag coordination polymer. Taken collectively, all products share a dinuclear bowl unit, some of which are further extended to the pseudo-capsule or polymeric array, depending on the solvents. The results suggest the solvent variation as a versatile engineering tool and present a perspective on the metallosupramolecules of calix[6]-mono-crowns with monomer, dimer (e.g., pseudo-capsule), and polymer topologies.

RESUMO

Molecular glue degraders, such as lenalidomide and pomalidomide, bind to cereblon (CRBN) E3 ligase and subsequently recruit neosubstrate proteins, Ikaros (IKZF1) and Aiolos (IKZF3), for the ubiquitination-proteasomal degradation process. In this study, we explored structure-activity relationship analysis for novel GSPT1 degraders utilizing a benzotriazinone scaffold previously discovered as a novel CRBN binder. In particular, we focused on the position of the ureido group on the benzotriazinone scaffold, substituent effect on the phenylureido group, and methyl substitution on the benzylic position of benzotriazinone. As a result, we identified 34f (TD-522), which exhibits strong anti-proliferative effects in both KG-1 (EC50 = 0.5 nM) and TMD-8 (EC50 = 5.2 nM) cell lines. Compound 34f effectively induced GSPT1 degradation with a DC50 of 0.269 nM and Dmax of >95 % at 10 nM concentration in KG-1 cells. An in vivo xenograft study showed that compound 34f effectively suppressed TMD8-driven tumor growth, suggesting a potential role in the development of novel GSPT1 degraders.

RESUMO

The effectiveness of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines had been shown in many studies in adult population, however, the real-world evidence in the childhood population was scarce. We aimed to organize the collective expert's opinions on adolescent vaccination against COVID-19 in Korea, therefore to guide the vaccination policy in the setting of available evidence. The Delphi panels responded that adolescents were greatly impacted by the quarantine measures, and COVID-19 is an important health problem for adolescents. Panels responded that in general, the benefits of the COVID-19 vaccine overweigh the potential risks in Korean adolescents. Continuing monitoring of available data is needed to provide the best vaccination practices in adolescents guided by the updated evidence.

RESUMO

All-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) based on ceramic materials are considered a key technology for automobiles and energy storage systems owing to their high safety and stability. However, contact issues between the electrode and solid-electrolyte materials and undesired chemical reaction occurring at interfaces have hindered their development. Herein, the chemical compatibility and structural stability of composite mixtures of the layered cathode materials Li1- x Ni0.5 Co0.2 Mn0.3 O2 (NCM523) with the garnet-type solid electrolyte Li6.25 Ga0.25 La3 Zr2 O12 (LLZO-Ga) during high-temperature co-sintering under various gas flowing conditions are investigated. In situ high-temperature X-ray diffraction analysis of the composite materials reveals that Li diffusion from LLZO-Ga to NCM523 occurs at high temperature under synthetic air atmosphere, resulting in the decomposition of LLZO-Ga into La2 Zr2 O7 and the recovery of charged NCM523 to the as-prepared state. The structural stability of the composite mixture at high temperature is further investigated under N2 atmosphere, revealing that Li diffuses toward the opposite direction and involves the phase transition of LLZO-Ga from a cubic to tetragonal structure and the reduction of the NCM523 cathode to Ni metal. These findings provide insight into the structural stability of layered cathode and garnet-type solid-electrolyte composite materials and the design of stable interfaces between them via co-sintering for ASSBs.

RESUMO

A pillar[5]-bis-trithiacrown (L) capable of metal binding and organic guest threading simultaneously has been employed, and the influence of dinitrile guests [CN(CH2)nCN (n = 2-6: abbreviated C2-C6)] on the coordination behaviors has been investigated. When the ditopic ligand L was reacted with HgCl2 in the presence of the C2-C6 guests, the shorter guests C2 and C3 afforded a two-dimensional coordination polymer [Hg7Cl14(C2@L)2]n (1) and a one-dimensional coordination polymer [(Hg3Cl6)2(C3@L)2]n (2), respectively. In 1 and 2, each dinitrile guest threads into the pillararene cavity to form a C2@L or C3@L unit via the host-guest interaction. Further linking of these units by exocyclic Hg-S bonds and anion coordination lead to the formation of coordination products with different dimensionalities. While the use of the longer guests C4-C6 under the same reactions yielded a discrete dimercury(II) complex 3, [Hg2Cl4(CH3CN@L)] which contains one acetonitrile solvent molecule because the longer dinitriles do not serve as effective guests. In the NMR and UV-vis studies, the association constants (log K1:1) for the host-guest interactions of L with the dinitrile guests are C2 (4.75) > C3 (4.17) ≫ C4 (2.85) > C5 (2.45) > C6 (too small), indicating that the shorter guests C2 or C3 interact more strongly than longer ones due to the confined interior space of L. Taken collectively, the C2 and C3 guests with proper size-matching promote the formation of coordination polymers and vice versa, suggesting that the guest size could be a controlling factor.

RESUMO

In the construction of metallosupramolecules, the reaction sequence in a three-reactant system (one ligand plus two metal ions) could be one of the controlling factors influencing the outcome of the reaction. In this work, the formation of supramolecular isomers (1 and 2) and an endo/exocyclic Cu+ complex (4) of the NS4-macrocycle (L) via different sequential metal addition protocols (routes I-III) is reported. In one-pot reactions of L with Cu(CH3CN)4PF6 in the absence (route I) and presence (route II) of CdI2, a cyclic dimer CuI complex, [Cu2(L)2](PF6)2 (1), and a one-dimensional coordination polymer, [Cu2(L)2]n·n[CdI4] (2), were obtained, respectively. Interestingly, the complex cations in 1 and 2 are supramolecular isomers formed via cyclization and polymerization upon complexation, respectively, probably due to different geometric and electronic complementarities, via the C-H···X- hydrogen bonds, between L and the counterion. In the two-step reaction (route III), an endocyclic Cd2+ complex, [Cd(L)I2] (3), obtained in the first step was utilized in the following reaction with Cu(CH3CN)4PF6, giving rise to an endo/exocyclic tetranuclear Cu+ complex, [Cu4(L)2(CH3CN)6](PF6)4 (4), via Cd2+ → 2Cu+ substitution, which is not accessible by conventional procedures. Solution studies by comparative NMR and electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy also support metal substitution by showing the stronger binding affinity of Cu+ over Cd2+. These results demonstrate that the metal substitution protocol could be useful for reaching novel metallosupramolecules difficult to obtain by other methods.
