RESUMO

Charge radii of neutron deficient ^{40}Sc and ^{41}Sc nuclei were determined using collinear laser spectroscopy. With the new data, the chain of Sc charge radii extends below the neutron magic number N=20 and shows a pronounced kink, generally taken as a signature of a shell closure, but one notably absent in the neighboring Ca, K, and Ar isotopic chains. Theoretical models that explain the trend at N=20 for the Ca isotopes cannot reproduce this puzzling behavior.

RESUMO

Nuclear charge radii of ^{55,56}Ni were measured by collinear laser spectroscopy. The obtained information completes the behavior of the charge radii at the shell closure of the doubly magic nucleus ^{56}Ni. The trend of charge radii across the shell closures in calcium and nickel is surprisingly similar despite the fact that the ^{56}Ni core is supposed to be much softer than the ^{48}Ca core. The very low magnetic moment µ(^{55}Ni)=-1.108(20) µ_{N} indicates the impact of M1 excitations between spin-orbit partners across the N,Z=28 shell gaps. Our charge-radii results are compared to ab initio and nuclear density functional theory calculations, showing good agreement within theoretical uncertainties.

RESUMO

We describe a dual-comb spectrometer that can operate independently of laboratory-based rf and optical frequency references but is nevertheless capable of ultra-high spectral resolution, high SNR, and frequency-accurate spectral measurements. The instrument is based on a "bootstrapped" frequency referencing scheme in which short-term optical phase coherence between combs is attained by referencing each to a free-running diode laser, whilst high frequency resolution and long-term accuracy is derived from a stable quartz oscillator. The sensitivity, stability and accuracy of this spectrometer were characterized using a multipass cell. We demonstrate comb-resolved spectra spanning from 140 THz (2.14 µm, 4670 cm-1) to 184 THz (1.63 µm, 6140 cm-1) in the near infrared with a frequency sampling of 200 MHz (0.0067 cm-1) and ~1 MHz frequency accuracy. High resolution spectra of water and carbon dioxide transitions at 1.77 µm, 1.96 µm and 2.06 µm show that the molecular transmission acquired with this system operating in the field-mode did not deviate from those measured when it was referenced to a maser and cavity-stabilized laser to within 5.6 × 10-4. When optimized for carbon dioxide quantification at 1.60 µm, a sensitivity of 2.8 ppm-km at 1 s integration time, improving to 0.10 ppm-km at 13 minutes of integration time was achieved.

RESUMO

Mid-infrared femtosecond optical frequency combs were produced by difference frequency generation of the spectral components of a near-infrared comb in a 3-mm-long MgO:PPLN crystal. We observe strong pump depletion and 9.3 dB parametric gain in the 1.5 µm signal, which yields powers above 500 mW (3 µW/mode) in the idler with spectra covering 2.8 µm to 3.5 µm. Potential for broadband, high-resolution molecular spectroscopy is demonstrated by absorption spectra and interferograms obtained by heterodyning two combs.

RESUMO

A source of ultrashort pulses of light in the 2 µm region was constructed using supercontinuum broadening from an erbium mode-locked laser. The output spectrum spanned 1000 nm to 2200 nm with an average power of 250 mW. A pulse width of 39 fs for part of the spectrum in the 2000 nm region, corresponding to less than six optical cycles, was achieved. A heterodyne measurement of the free-running mode-locked laser with a narrow-linewidth continuous wave laser resulted in a near shot noise-limited beat note with a signal-to-noise ratio of 45 dB in a 10 kHz resolution bandwidth. The relative intensity noise of the broadband system was investigated over the entire supercontinuum, and the integrated relative intensity noise of the 2000 nm portion of the spectrum was 1.7 × 10(-3). The long-term stability of the system was characterized, and intensity fluctuations in the spectrum were found to be highly correlated throughout the supercontinuum. Spectroscopic limitations due to the laser noise characteristics are discussed.
