RESUMO

A compact and robust scheme for broadband excitation of whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonances into a microsphere is demonstrated. A polymer microsphere (10 µm) is encapsulated into the capillary of a microstructured optical fiber, in direct contact with the guiding core. Such a configuration allows efficient and reproducible excitation of the in-MOF-microsphere resonator that is characterized by two launch/collection schemes: core input/scattering output, and sphere input/core output. The latter allows an excitation of the microsphere WGMs externally to the fiber. Numerically calculated WGM spectra are in agreement with experiments. Q factors in the range of 10(3) are typically measured.

RESUMO

On dissociation of M(CO)(6), M = Cr, Mo and W, by a femtosecond UV laser (<270 to 360 nm), pronounced coherent oscillations are observed in the pentacarbonyl products on probing by long-wavelength (810 nm) ionization in the gas phase. They are vibrations in the ground state, driven by the slope from a conical intersection on relaxation from the initially formed excited state (S(1)). Surprisingly, with M = Mo and W we also find a fundamental of an antisymmetric (b(2) in C(4v)) vibration. From positive and negative displacements along such a coordinate one would expect the same signal, so that there should be only overtones. Vibrational selection rules are therefore considered for time-resolved spectroscopy. The reason for the symmetry breaking is suggested to result from the fact that the phase in superposition of wave functions is established by the pump process and this phase is conserved in probing, independently of the probe delay. An antisymmetric fundamental can be observed, if there is a small tunneling splitting in a state involved in the probe process. The observations also imply some conclusions on the dissociation and relaxation processes and the potentials: with longer wavelengths, the wave packet enters on the same surface but from a different direction to S(1). Only a very minor fraction of the available energy appears as coherent oscillation. There is no equipartition at the end, and a second CO is cleaved off in few picoseconds, even if there is only very little excess energy. Triplets do not contribute, even in the tungsten system and at longest wavelengths. The dissociation mechanism involves passage of the wave packet from all initial states over an avoided crossing to a repulsive ligand-field surface. It predicts that in some other molecules, the barrier caused thereby is larger and for long photolysis wavelength the lifetime is long enough for intersystem crossing to take place; it also predicts wavelength dependences in these cases. It is again emphasized that there is no vertical internal conversion; instead, the molecule is controlled by slopes and intersections of potentials. Also lifetimes can be considered as a control parameter in photochemistry.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: During in-office bleaching, appropriate light sources are applied in order to enhance the activity of the bleaching gels applied onto teeth. For this method to be effective, a high absorption of light within the gel is necessary. Variation in the light attenuation capability of the gel, the duration of application and light activation can contribute towards safety hazards associated with this procedure. METHODS: In this study, seven different gels and hydrogen peroxide have been evaluated for their optical properties by means of spectrophotometry (440-1000 nm). The transmitted light spectrum was used to estimate the intensity loss for each gel. The mean intensity decreases observed were statistically analysed using an analysis of variance (ANOVA). RESULTS: The five more-pigmented gels tested indicated a very similar intensity loss of around 80%, whereas the remaining two gels showed significantly less attenuation (predominantly, p < 10-6). CONCLUSIONS: Throughout the spectrum of wavelengths examined, and according to the underlying studies evaluated, five of the gels assessed demonstrated an attenuation high enough to possibly avoid overheating of the underlying enamel dentine and pulp. An evaluation of appropriate irradiation parameters is proposed.

RESUMO

We report the relaxation dynamics of keto and enol or keto-imino cytosine, photoexcited in the wavelength range of 260-290 nm. Three transients with femtosecond to hundreds of picoseconds lifetimes are observed for the biologically relevant keto tautomer and are assigned to internal conversion and excited-state tautomerization. Only two transients with femtosecond and picosecond lifetimes are identified for the enol or keto-imino tautomer and are assigned to internal conversion processes. The results are discussed in the context of published ab initio theory.

RESUMO

Relative humidity (RH) changes are a natural environmental effect that forces organic materials to a constant cycle of achieving equilibrium. The present work is part of an ongoing research based on the hypothesis that the inevitable deleterious effects of the RH natural cycle may be prevented or minimized if a deformation threshold is assigned to each monitored endangered object prior to exposure to structural damage. In this paper the characterization of the behavior of a softwood sample (1.0 cm thick) submitted to RH abrupt cycles has been performed, in terms of mass and rate of displacement of the surface. The exemplary study is based on the concept of recording the RH impact directly from the material surface, allowing us to identify diversity in reaction with time, which in turn could determine the onset of structural changes prior to irreversible damage. The RH impact is measured as surface deformation from interference fringes, using a custom-made real time holography system with interferometric precision termed digital holographic speckle-pattern interferometry (DHSPI). The main observations presented here are a hysteresis in the dynamic sorption isotherm and a greater rate of displacement during the drying. A long-term experiment was performed to identify signs of ageing of the sample. The evolution of the mass and the rate of displacement stayed similar, an offset with an interesting behavior was observed and highlights ageing of wood. In order to produce a future preventive model for distinct art objects it is necessary to determine a deformation threshold for each material. In this context the study was planned to continue with organic samples bearing variable density and thickness under longer-term RH cycles and monitoring until the samples show visible signs of irreversible damage.

RESUMO

We demonstrate a three-port, light guiding and routing T-shaped configuration based on the combination of whispering gallery modes (WGMs) and micro-structured optical fibers (MOFs). This system includes a single mode optical fiber taper (SOFT), a slightly tapered MOF and a BaTiO3 microsphere for efficient light coupling and routing between these two optical fibers. The BaTiO3 glass microsphere is semi-immersed into one of the hollow capillaries of the MOF taper, while the single mode optical fiber taper is placed perpendicularly to the latter and in contact with the equatorial region of the microsphere. Experimental results are presented for different excitation and reading conditions through the WGM microspherical resonator, namely, through single mode optical fiber taper or the MOF. The experimental results indicate that light coupling between the MOF and the single mode optical fiber taper is facilitated at specific wavelengths, supported by the light localization characteristics of the BaTiO3 glass microsphere, with spectral Q-factors varying between 4.5 × 10³ and 6.1 × 10³, depending on the port and parity excitation.

RESUMO

Rotational spectra have traditionally been measured without a concurrent means of differentiating the molecular constituents of the sample. Here, we present an all-optical multipulse experiment that allows the correlated measurement of rotational and mass or photoelectron spectra by combining Fourier transform rotational coherence spectroscopy with resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization. We demonstrate the power of this method with the determination of ground-state rotational constants and fragmentation channels for 10 different isotopes in a natural carbon disulfide sample. Three of the reported rotational constants were previously inaccessible by conventional spectroscopic techniques.

RESUMO

We demonstrate that in a short Ar cell, generation of the fifth harmonic from 12 fs pulses at 810 nm directly results in ultrashort vacuum UV pulses at 162 nm. They have a spectral width of approximately 5 nm and a duration of 11+/-1 fs (1.4 times the transform limit), as measured by cross correlation with the fundamental pulses. Their energy (estimated to 4 nJ) turned out to be sufficient for use as a pump in time-resolved experiments.

RESUMO

Focusing 12 fs pulses of 800 nm with moderate energy (0.35 mJ) into atmospheric-pressure argon (Ar) gives rise to filamentation (self-focusing) and a supercontinuum with a very broad pedestal, extending to 250 nm. According to the present understanding, the short wavelengths are produced by self-phase modulation in the self-steepened trailing edge of the pulse. Pulses in this spectral range might thus be intrinsically short. Indeed we demonstrate this by extracting the light near the end of the filament, terminating self-focusing by a pressure gradient at a pinhole, beyond which the Ar is pumped away. We obtain pulses of 9.7 fs in the region of 290 nm without the necessity of compression.
