Unpredictable climate change might cause serious lack of food in the world. Therefore, in the present world, it is urgent to prepare countermeasures to solve problems in terms of human survival. In this research, quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were analyzed when rice attacked by white backed planthopper (WBPH) were analyzed using 120 Cheongcheong/Nagdong double haploid lines. Moreover, from the detected QTLs, WBPH resistance-related genes were screened in large candidate genes. Among them, OsCM, a major gene in the synthesis of Cochlioquinone-9 (cq-9), was screened. OsCM has high homology with the sequence of chorismate mutase, and exists in various functional and structural forms in plants that produce aromatic amino acids. It also induces resistance to biotic stress through the synthesis of secondary metabolites in plants. The WBPH resistance was improved in rice overexpressed through map-based cloning of the WBPH resistance-related gene OsCM, which was finally detected by QTL mapping. In addition, cq-9 increased the survival rate of caecal ligation puncture (CLP)-surgery mice by 60%. Moreover, the aorta of rat treated with cq-9 was effective in vasodilation response and significantly reduced the aggregation of rat platelets induced by collagen treatment. A cq-9, which is strongly associated with resistance to WBPH in rice, is also associated with positive effect of CLP surgery mice survival rate, vasodilation, and significantly reduced rat platelet aggregation induced by collagen treatment. Therefore, cq-9 presents research possibilities as a substance in a new paradigm that can act on both Plant-Insect in response to the present unpredictable future.

The assessment of the genetic diversity within germplasm collections can be accomplished using simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers and association mapping techniques. The present study was conducted to evaluate the genetic diversity of a colored rice germplasm collection containing 376 black-purple rice samples and 172 red pericarp samples, conserved by Dong-A University. There were 600 pairs of SSR primers screened against 11 rice varieties. Sixteen informative primer pairs were selected, having high polymorphism information content (PIC) values, which were then used to assess the genetic diversity within the collection. A total of 409 polymorphic amplified fragments were obtained using the 16 SSR markers. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 11 to 47, with an average of 25.6. The average PIC value was 0.913, ranging from 0.855 to 0.964. Four hundred and nine SSR loci were used to calculate Jaccard's distance coefficients, using the unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic mean cluster analysis. These accessions were separated into several distinctive groups corresponding to their morphology. The results provided valuable information for the colored rice breeding program and showed the importance of protecting germplasm resources and the molecular markers that can be derived from them.

Myeloblastosis (MYB) transcription factors play central roles in plant developmental processes and in responses to nutrient deficiency. In this study, OsMYB5P, an R2R3-MYB transcription factor, was isolated and identified from rice (Oryza sativa L. 'Dongjin') under inorganic phosphate (Pi)-deficient conditions. OsMYB5P protein is localized to the nucleus and functions as a transcription activator in plant development. Overexpression of OsMYB5P in rice and Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana Col-0) increases tolerance to phosphate starvation, whereas OsMYB5P knock-out through RNA interference increases sensitivity to Pi depletion in rice. Furthermore, shoots and roots of transgenic rice plants overexpressing OsMYB5P were longer than those of wild plants under both normal and Pi-deficient conditions. These results indicate that OsMYB5P is associated with the regulation of shoot development and root- system architecture. Overexpression of OsMYB5P led to increased Pi accumulation in shoots and roots. Interestingly, OsMYB5P directly bound to MBS (MYB binding site) motifs on the OsPT5 promoter and induced transcription of OsPT5 in rice. In addition, overexpression of OsMYB5P in Arabidopsis triggered increased expression of AtPht1;3, an Arabidopsis Pi transporter, in shoots and roots under normal and Pi-deficient conditions. Together, these results demonstrate that overexpression of OsMYB5P increases tolerance to Pi deficiency in plants by modulating Pi transporters at the transcriptional level in monocots and dicots.

This study was carried out to assess the potential of SSR markers for variety identification by comparing SSR markers and morphological traits in tests of distinctiveness, uniformity, and stability (DUS) of pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) varieties. Twenty-seven SSR markers were polymorphic in 66 pepper varieties, revealing a total of 89 alleles. Average polymorphism information content (PIC) value was 0.529, ranging from 0.03 to 0.877. Cluster analysis of the band patterns separated the varieties into three groups corresponding to varietal types. Morphological trait-based clustering showed some degree of similarity to dendrogram topologies based on the SSR index. However, no significance correlation was found between the SSR and morphological data. SSR markers could be used to complement a DUS test of a candidate variety and to select complimentary varieties by pre-screening existing varieties in the context of protecting new varieties of pepper.

A marker-assisted selection (MAS) breeding program was used to improve the plant regenerability of indica rice. A significant quantitative trait loci (QTL) that is associated with the capacity for green plant regeneration in the anther culture of rice was mapped on chromosome 10 using recombinant inbred (RI) population from Milyang 23/Gihobyeo. The marker that was chosen to follow the QTL region was used in MAS. This marker co-segregated with the regeneration ability in F2 individuals that were derived from MGRI 079/IR 36. In order to clarify the relationship between this marker and plant regenerability, the backcross population was screened with a RFLP marker. The capacity of plant regeneration of the backcross population was clearly distinguished by the marker genotype. The development of near isogenic line (NILs) with high regenerability through MAS will save time, labor, and cost in indica rice breeding.

The resistance of rice to ozone (O3) is a quantitative trait controlled by nuclear genes. The identification of quantitative trait loci (QTL) and analysis of molecular markers of O3 resistance is important for increasing the resistance of rice to O3 stress. QTL associated with the O3 resistance of rice were mapped on chromosomes 1, 7 and 11 using 164 recombinant inbred (RI) lines from a cross between 'Milyang 23' and 'Gihobyeo'. The quantitative trait loci were tightly linked to the markers RG109, C507 and RG1094 and were detected in each of three replications. The association between these markers and O3 resistance in 26 rice cultivars and doubled haploid (DH) populations was analysed. The markers permit the screening of rice germplasm for O3 resistance and the introduction of resistance into elite lines in breeding programs.
