Intraoperative cardiopulmonary variables are well-known predictors of postoperative pulmonary complications (PPC), traditionally quantified by median values over the duration of surgery. However, it is unknown whether cardiopulmonary instability, or wider intra-operative variability of the same metrics, is distinctly associated with PPC risk and severity. We leveraged a retrospective cohort of adults (n = 1202) undergoing major non-cardiothoracic surgery. We used multivariable logistic regression to evaluate the association of two outcomes (1)moderate-or-severe PPC and (2)any PPC with two sets of exposure variables- (a)variability of cardiopulmonary metrics (inter-quartile range, IQR) and (b)median intraoperative cardiopulmonary metrics. We compared predictive ability (receiver operating curve analysis, ROC) and parsimony (information criteria) of three models evaluating different aspects of the intra-operative cardiopulmonary metrics: Median-based: Median cardiopulmonary metrics alone, Variability-based: IQR of cardiopulmonary metrics alone, and Combined: Medians and IQR. Models controlled for peri-operative/surgical factors, demographics, and comorbidities. PPC occurred in 400(33%) of patients, and 91(8%) experienced moderate-or-severe PPC. Variability in multiple intra-operative cardiopulmonary metrics was independently associated with risk of moderate-or-severe, but not any, PPC. For moderate-or-severe PPC, the best-fit predictive model was the Variability-based model by both information criteria and ROC analysis (area under the curve, AUCVariability-based = 0.74 vs AUCMedian-based = 0.65, p = 0.0015; AUCVariability-based = 0.74 vs AUCCombined = 0.68, p = 0.012). For any PPC, the Median-based model yielded the best fit by information criteria. Predictive accuracy was marginally but not significantly higher for the Combined model (AUCCombined = 0.661) than for the Median-based (AUCMedian-based = 0.657, p = 0.60) or Variability-based (AUCVariability-based = 0.649, p = 0.29) models. Variability of cardiopulmonary metrics, distinct from median intra-operative values, is an important predictor of moderate-or-severe PPC.

The bacterial second messenger bis-(3'-5')-cyclic diguanylate monophosphate (c-di-GMP) controls various cellular processes, including motility, toxin production, and biofilm formation. c-di-GMP is enzymatically synthesized by GGDEF domain-containing diguanylate cyclases and degraded by HD-GYP domain-containing phosphodiesterases (PDEs) to 2 GMP or by EAL domain-containing PDE-As to 5'-phosphoguanylyl-(3',5')-guanosine (pGpG). Since excess pGpG feedback inhibits PDE-A activity and thereby can lead to the uncontrolled accumulation of c-di-GMP, a PDE that degrades pGpG to 2 GMP (PDE-B) has been presumed to exist. To date, the only enzyme known to hydrolyze pGpG is oligoribonuclease Orn, which degrades all kinds of oligoribonucleotides. Here, we identified a pGpG-specific PDE, which we named PggH, using biochemical approaches in the gram-negative bacteria Vibrio cholerae. Biochemical experiments revealed that PggH exhibited specific PDE activity only toward pGpG, thus differing from the previously reported Orn. Furthermore, the high-resolution structure of PggH revealed the basis for its PDE activity and narrow substrate specificity. Finally, we propose that PggH could modulate the activities of PDE-As and the intracellular concentration of c-di-GMP, resulting in phenotypic changes including in biofilm formation.

Live attenuated varicella-zoster virus (VZV) vaccines are used to prevent chickenpox and shingles. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that occur during the attenuation of parental strains are critical indicators of vaccine safety. To assess the attenuation of commercial VZV vaccines, genetic variants were comprehensively examined through high-throughput sequencing of viral DNA isolated from four VZV vaccines (Barycela, VarilRix, VariVax, and SKY Varicella). Whole-genome comparison of the four vaccines with the wild-type strain (Dumas) revealed that the sequences are highly conserved on a genome-wide scale. Among the 196 common variants across the four vaccines, 195 were already present in the genome of the parental strain (pOka), indicating that the variants occurred during the generation of the parental strain from the Dumas strain. Compared to the pOka genome, the vaccines exhibited distinct variant frequencies on a genome-wide and within an attenuation-related open reading frame. In particular, attenuation-associated 42 SNPs showed that Barycela, VarilRix, VariVax, and SKY Varicella are in ascending order regarding similarity with pOka-like genotypes, which in turn, might provide genomic evidence for the levels of attenuation. Finally, the phylogenetic network analysis demonstrated that genetic distances from the parental strain correlated with the attenuation levels of the vaccines.

The field of digital holography has been significant developed in recent decades, however, the commercialization of digital holograms is still hindered by the issue of large data sizes. Due to the complex signal characteristics of digital holograms, which are of interferometric nature, traditional codecs are not able to provide satisfactory coding efficiency. Furthermore, in a typical coding scenario, the hologram is encoded and then decoded, leading to a numerical reconstruction via a light wave propagation model. While previous researches have mainly focused on the quality of the decoded hologram, it is the numerical reconstruction that is visible to the viewer, and thus, its quality must also be taken into consideration when designing a coding solution. In this study, the coding performances of existing compression standards, JPEG2000 and HEVC-Intra, are evaluated on a set of digital holograms, then the limitations of these standards are analyzed. Subsequently, we propose a deep learning-based compression network for full-complex holograms that demonstrates superior coding performance when compared to the latest standard codecs such as VVC and JPEG-XL, in addition to JPEG2000 and HEVC. The proposed network incorporates not only the quality of the decoded hologram, but also the quality of the numerical reconstruction as distortion costs for network training. The experimental results validate that the proposed network provides superior objective coding efficiency and better visual quality compared to the existing methods.

In recent decades, holographic technology has made significant progress with the development of novel hologram generation methods and three-dimensional rendering devices. Nevertheless, the substantial size of holographic data presents a significant challenge to its practical applications and thus necessitates the implementation of an efficient coding solution. In this study, we evaluate the efficiency of various coding tools within the state-of-the-art video coding standard, Versatile Video Coding, for encoding video of computer-generated phase-only hologram. Specifically, we examine the coding performance of transform/in-loop filter/screen-content coding tools. Through extensive encoding experiments and various statistical analyses, we investigated the limitations of existing standard codecs that do not account for the unique signal characteristics of phase-only holograms (POHs). The effects of coding artifacts on the visual quality of numerical reconstructions rendered from compressed POHs are also analyzed in detail. These comprehensive performance evaluations will provide valuable insights for developing efficient coding strategies for POH videos.

BACKGROUND: 4-(Methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol (NNAL) is known as a lung carcinogen. The objective of this study was to investigate associations of urine NNAL concentrations and smoking status. METHODS: This was a cross-sectionally designed study based on data from the 2016-2018 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. A total of 2,845 participants were classified into past-smoker, electronic cigarette (e-cigar) only, dual-user, and cigarette only smoker groups. All sampling and weight variables were stratified and analysis was conducted accounting for the complex sampling design. Analysis of covariance was used to compare the geometric mean of urine NNAL concentrations and log-transformed urine NNAL level among smoking status with weighted survey design. Post hoc paired comparisons with Bonferroni adjustment was performed according to smoking status. RESULTS: The estimated geometric mean concentrations of urine NNAL were 1.974 ± 0.091, 14.349 ± 5.218, 89.002 ± 11.444, and 117.597 ± 5.459 pg/mL in past-smoker, e-cigar only, dual-user, and cigarette only smoker groups, respectively. After fully adjusting, log-transformed urine NNAL level was significantly different among groups (P < 0.001). Compared with the past-smoker group, e-cigar only, dual-user, and cigarette only smoker groups showed significantly higher log-transformed urine NNAL concentrations in post hoc test (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: E-cigar only, dual-user, and cigarette only smoker groups showed significantly higher geometric mean concentrations of urine NNAL than the past-smoker group. Conventional cigarette, dual users, and e-cigar users can potentially show harmful health effects from NNAL.

BACKGROUND: Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) is a pathogen that causes chickenpox and shingles in humans. Different types of the varicella vaccines derived from the Oka and MAV/06 strains are commercially available worldwide. Although the MAV/06 vaccine was introduced in 1990s, little was known about immunological characteristics. RESULTS: Here, we evaluated B and T cell immune response in animals inoculated with the Oka and MAV/06 vaccines as well as a new formulation of the MAV/06 vaccine. A variety of test methods were applied to evaluate T and B cell immune response. Plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) and fluorescent antibody to membrane antigen (FAMA) assay were conducted to measure the MAV/06 vaccine-induced antibody activity against various VZVs. Glycoprotein enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (gpELISA) was used to compare the degree of the antibody responses induced by the two available commercial VZV vaccines and the MAV/06 vaccine. Interferon-gamma enzyme-linked immunosorbent spot (IFN-γ ELISpot) assays and cytokine bead array (CBA) assays were conducted to investigate T cell immune responses. Antibodies induced by MAV/06 vaccination showed immunogenicity against a variety of varicella-zoster virus and cross-reactivity among the virus clades. CONCLUSIONS: It is indicating the similarity of the antibody responses induced by commercial varicella vaccines and the MAV/06 vaccine. Moreover, VZV-specific T cell immune response from MAV/06 vaccination was increased via Th1 cell response. MAV/06 varicella vaccine induced both humoral and cellular immune response via Th1 cell mediated response.

Pulmonary atelectasis is common in the perioperative period. Physiologically, it is produced when collapsing forces derived from positive pleural pressure and surface tension overcome expanding forces from alveolar pressure and parenchymal tethering. Atelectasis impairs blood oxygenation and reduces lung compliance. It is increasingly recognized that it can also induce local tissue biologic responses, such as inflammation, local immune dysfunction, and damage of the alveolar-capillary barrier, with potential loss of lung fluid clearance, increased lung protein permeability, and susceptibility to infection, factors that can initiate or exaggerate lung injury. Mechanical ventilation of a heterogeneously aerated lung (e.g., in the presence of atelectatic lung tissue) involves biomechanical processes that may precipitate further lung damage: concentration of mechanical forces, propagation of gas-liquid interfaces, and remote overdistension. Knowledge of such pathophysiologic mechanisms of atelectasis and their consequences in the healthy and diseased lung should guide optimal clinical management.

INTRODUCTION: Bone mineral density (BMD) decreases with age, leading to fractures, decreased mobility, and impaired quality of life. We aimed to determine the effects of brisk walking and exposure to sunlight on BMD and balance in the elderly with osteopenia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We recruited 81 elderly subjects with osteopenia from January 2019 to March 2019. They were divided into four groups: a daytime-walking group (n = 20), a night-time-walking group (n = 20), a sun-exposure-only group (n = 20), and a control group (n = 21). The subjects walked briskly for 30-60 min three times a week for 24 weeks. The sun-exposure-only group received sunlight for 20-30 min three times a week. All four groups received supplemental calcium. Lumbar L1-L4 BMD, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3, timed-up-go-test (TUGT), five-times-sit-stand-test (FTSST), open-eye and closed-eye one-leg-stance-test (OLST) were measured at baseline and 1 day after program completion. RESULTS: The lumbar L1-L4 BMD was higher in all intervention groups (P < 0.05), with the daytime-walking group outperforming the others. There was no significant difference between the night-time-walking and sun-exposure-only groups (P > 0.05). The levels of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 in the daytime-walking and sun-exposure-only groups were higher than those in the night-time-walking and control groups (P < 0.05). The TUGT and FTSST times decreased in all three intervention groups and predominantly so in the daytime-walking group, whereas the open-eye and closed-eye OLST times increased (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Brisk walking and sun exposure increase BMD and improve dynamic and static balance in the elderly with osteopenia.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, there has been an increase in the incidence of health problems among college students in China, the lack of adequate physical exercise is the major reason. This study aimed to investigate methods to promote exercise behavior and cardiovascular fitness among college students based on the motivation theory. METHODS: Cardiovascular fitness levels of 641 college students (20.72 ± 1.41 years old) were measured. Exercise motivation was assessed using the physical exercise motivation scale and physical exercise rating scale. Correlation analysis, regression analysis, and structural equation models were used to assess exercise motivation, exercise behavior, and cardiovascular fitness. Energy relationships were determined to develop a path model that promotes exercise behavior and aerobic fitness among college students. RESULTS: The exercise motivation of college students was directly related to cardiovascular fitness (effect value: 0.577) or indirectly related through the mediating effect of exercise behavior (effect value: 0.215). The influence of health motivation on exercise behavior (ß = 0.132, p = 0.001) and cardiovascular fitness (ß = 0.251, p < 0.001) was greater than that of other factors of motivation. CONCLUSIONS: The physical exercise behavior of college students partially mediates the relationship between exercise motivation and cardiovascular fitness. Therefore, the educational concept of "Health First" should be promoted in college sports. Internal motivation of exercise can be transformed into external motivation to improve students' exercise behavior and cardiovascular fitness through enhancing their cardiopulmonary capacity.

BACKGROUND: Adjuvant regional anesthesia is often selected for patients or procedures with high risk of pulmonary complications after general anesthesia. The benefit of adjuvant regional anesthesia to reduce postoperative pulmonary complications remains uncertain. In a prospective observational multicenter study, patients scheduled for non-cardiothoracic surgery with at least one postoperative pulmonary complication surprisingly received adjuvant regional anesthesia more frequently than those with no complications. We hypothesized that, after adjusting for surgical and patient complexity variables, the incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications would not be associated with adjuvant regional anesthesia. METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of a prospective observational multicenter study including 1202 American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status 3 patients undergoing non-cardiothoracic surgery. Patients were classified as receiving either adjuvant regional anesthesia or general anesthesia alone. Predefined pulmonary complications within the first seven postoperative days were prospectively identified. Groups were compared using bivariable and multivariable hierarchical logistic regression analyses for the outcome of at least one postoperative pulmonary complication. RESULTS: Adjuvant regional anesthesia was performed in 266 (22.1%) patients and not performed in 936 (77.9%). The incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications was greater in patients receiving adjuvant regional anesthesia (42.1%) than in patients without it (30.9%) (site adjusted p = 0.007), but this association was not confirmed after adjusting for covariates (adjusted OR 1.37; 95% CI, 0.83-2.25; p = 0.165). CONCLUSION: After adjusting for surgical and patient complexity, adjuvant regional anesthesia versus general anesthesia alone was not associated with a greater incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications in this multicenter cohort of non-cardiothoracic surgery patients.

The interference between software components is increasing in safety-critical domains, such as autonomous driving. Low-criticality (LC) tasks, such as vehicle communication, may control high-criticality (HC) tasks, such as acceleration. In such cases, the LC task should also be considered as an HC task because the HC tasks relies on the LC task. However, the difficulty in guaranteeing these LC tasks is the catastrophic cost of computing resources, the electronic control unit in the domain of vehicles, required for every task. In this paper, we theoretically and practically provide safety-guaranteed and inexpensive scheduling for LC tasks by borrowing the computational power of neighbored systems in distributed systems, obviating the need for additional hardware components. As a result, our approach extended the schedulability of LC tasks without violating the HC tasks. Based on the deadline test, the compatibility of our approach with the task-level MC scheduler was higher than that of the system-level MC scheduler, such that the task-level had all dropped LC tasks recovered while the system-level only had 25.5% recovery. Conversely, from the worst-case measurement of violated HC tasks, the HC tasks were violated by the task-level MC scheduler more often than by the system-level MC scheduler, with 70.3% and 15.4% average response time overhead, respectively. In conclusion, under the condition that the HC task ratio has lower than 47% of the overall task systems at 80% of total utilization, the task-level approach with task migration has extensively higher sustainability on LC tasks.

The spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic across countries all over the world urges governments to revolutionize the traditional medical hospitals/centers to provide sustainable and trustworthy medical services to patients under the pressure of the huge overload on the computing systems of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for medical monitoring as well as treatment services of medical professionals. Uncertain malfunctions in any part of the medical computing infrastructure, from its power system in a remote area to the local computing systems at a smart hospital, can cause critical failures in medical monitoring services, which could lead to a fatal loss of human life in the worst case. Therefore, early design in the medical computing infrastructure's power and computing systems needs to carefully consider the dependability characteristics, including the reliability and availability of the WSNs in smart hospitals under an uncertain outage of any part of the energy resources or failures of computing servers, especially due to software aging. In that regard, we propose reliability and availability models adopting stochastic Petri net (SPN) to quantify the impact of energy resources and server rejuvenation on the dependability of medical sensor networks. Three different availability models (A, B, and C) are developed in accordance with various operational configurations of a smart hospital's computing infrastructure to assimilate the impact of energy resource redundancy and server rejuvenation techniques for high availability. Moreover, a comprehensive sensitivity analysis is performed to investigate the components that impose the greatest impact on the system availability. The analysis results indicate different impacts of the considered configurations on the WSN's operational availability in smart hospitals, particularly 99.40%, 99.53%, and 99.64% for the configurations A, B, and C, respectively. This result highlights the difference of 21 h of downtime per year when comparing the worst with the best case. This study can help leverage the early design of smart hospitals considering its wireless medical sensor networks' dependability in quality of service to cope with overloading medical services in world-wide virus pandemics.

In urban mobility, Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) provide a variety of intelligent applications. By enhancing automobile traffic management, these technologies enable advancements in safety and help decrease the frequency of accidents. The transportation system can now follow the development and growth of cities without sacrificing the quality and organisation of its services thanks to safety apps that include collision alerts, real-time traffic information, and safe driving applications, among others. Applications can occasionally demand a lot of computing power, making their processing impractical for cars with limited onboard processing capacity. Offloading of computation is encouraged by such a restriction. However, because vehicle mobility operations are dynamic, communication times (also known as link lifetimes) between nodes are frequently short. VANET applications and processes are impacted by such communication delays (e.g., the offloading decision when using the Computational Offloading technique). Making an accurate prediction of the link lifespan between vehicles is therefore challenging. The effectiveness of the communication time estimation is currently constrained by the link lifespan prediction methods used in the computational offloading process. This work investigates five machine learning (ML) algorithms to predict the link lifetime between nodes in VANETs in different scenarios. We propose the procedures required to carry out the link lifetime prediction method using existing ML techniques. The tactic creates datasets with the features the models need to learn and be trained. The SVR and XGBoost algorithms that were selected as part of the assessment process were trained. To make the prediction using the trained models, we modified the lifespan prediction function from an offloading approach. To determine the viability of applying link lifespan predictions from the models trained in the road and urban scenarios, we conducted a performance study. The findings indicate that compared to the conventional prediction strategy described in the literature, the suggested link lifetime prediction via regression approaches decreases prediction error rates. An offloading method from the literature is extended by the selected SVR. The task loss and recovery rates might be significantly reduced using the SVR. XGBoost outperformed its ML competitors in task recovery or drop rate by 70% to 80% in an assessed hypothesis compared to an offloading choice technique in the literature. With greater offloading rates from an application on the VANET, this effort is intended to give better efficiency in estimating this data using machine learning in various vehicular settings.

We previously reported that extracellular vesicles (EVs) released during Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacterial pneumonia were inflammatory, and administration of high molecular weight hyaluronic acid (HMW HA) suppressed several indices of acute lung injury (ALI) from E. coli pneumonia by binding to these inflammatory EVs. The current study was undertaken to study the therapeutic effects of HMW HA in ex vivo perfused human lungs injured with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA)103 bacterial pneumonia. For lungs with baseline alveolar fluid clearance (AFC) <10%/h, HMW HA 1 or 2 mg was injected intravenously after 1 h (n = 4-9), and EVs released during PA pneumonia were collected from the perfusate over 6 h. For lungs with baseline AFC > 10%/h, HMW HA 2 mg was injected intravenously after 1 h (n = 6). In vitro experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of HA on inflammation and bacterial phagocytosis. For lungs with AFC < 10%/h, administration of HMW HA intravenously significantly restored AFC and numerically decreased protein permeability and alveolar inflammation from PA103 pneumonia but had no effect on bacterial counts at 6 h. However, HMW HA improved bacterial phagocytosis by human monocytes and neutrophils and suppressed the inflammatory properties of EVs released during pneumonia on monocytes. For lungs with AFC > 10%/h, administration of HMW HA intravenously improved AFC from PA103 pneumonia but had no significant effects on protein permeability, inflammation, or bacterial counts. In the presence of impaired alveolar epithelial transport capacity, administration of HMW HA improved the resolution of pulmonary edema from Pseudomonas PA103 bacterial pneumonia.

With the development of technology, electronic devices are becoming more miniaturized and multifunctional. With the development of small electronic devices, they are changing from the conventional accessory type, which is portable, to the patchable type, which can be attached to a person's apparel or body, and the eatable/implantable type, which can be directly implanted into the human body. In this regard, it is necessary to address various technical issues, such as high-capacity/high-efficiency small-sized battery technology, component miniaturization, low power technology, flexible technology, and smart sensing technology. In addition, there is a demand for self-powered wireless systems in particular devices. A piezoelectric/triboelectric nanogenerator (PENG/TENG) can generate electric energy from small amounts of mechanical energy such as from blood flow and heartbeats in the human body as well as human movement, so it is expected that it will enable the development of self-powered wireless systems. Due to their unique properties, such as flexibility, transparency, mechanical stability, and nontoxicity, 2D materials are optimal materials for the development of implantable and patchable self-powered nanodevices in the human body. In this Review, the studies related to patchable and implantable devices for the human body using PENGs/TENGs based on 2D materials are discussed.

Through time-dependent defect spectroscopy and low-frequency noise measurements, we investigate and characterize the differences of carrier trapping processes occurred by different interfaces (top/sidewall) of the gate-all-around silicon nanosheet field-effect transistor (GAA SiNS FET). In a GAA SiNS FET fabricated by the top-down process, the traps at the sidewall interface significantly affect the device performance as the width decreases. Compare to expectations, as the width of the device decreases, the subthreshold swing (SS) increases from 120 to 230 mV/dec, resulting in less gate controllability. In narrow-width devices, the effect of traps located at the sidewall interface is significantly dominant, and the 1/f 2 noise, also known as generation-recombination (G-R) noise, is clearly appeared with an increased time constant (τ i ). In addition, the probability density distributions for the normalized current fluctuations (ΔI D) show only one Gaussian in wide-width devices, whereas they are separated into four Gaussians with increased in narrow-width devices. Therefore, fitting is performed through the carrier number fluctuation-correlated with mobility fluctuations model that separately considered the effects of sidewall. In narrow-width GAA SiNS FETs, consequently, the extracted interface trap densities (N T ) distribution becomes more dominant, and the scattering parameter ([Formula: see text]) distribution increases by more than double.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the association between metformin usage and the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Health Screening Cohort database. METHODS: Data from the NHIS-HEALS cohort between 2002 and 2015 were longitudinally analyzed. Subjects were divided into three groups: metformin non-users with diabetes mellitus (DM), metformin users with DM, and no DM group. CRC was defined using the ICD-10 code (C18.0-C20.0) at the time of admission. Cox proportional hazard regression models were adopted after stepwise adjustment for confounders to investigate the association between metformin usage and colorectal cancer risk. RESULTS: During the follow-up period, of the total 323,430 participants, 2341 (1.33%) of the 175,495 males and 1204 (0.81%) of the 147,935 females were newly diagnosed with CRC. The estimated cumulative incidence of CRC was significantly different among the three groups based on Kaplan-Meier's survival curve (p values < 0.05 in both sexes). Compared with metformin non-users, hazard ratios (95% CIs) of metformin users and the no DM group were 0.66 (0.51-0.85) and 0.72 (0.61-0.85) in males and 0.59 (0.37-0.92) and 0.93 (0.66-1.29) in females, respectively, after being fully adjusted. CONCLUSIONS: Metformin users with diabetes appear to have a significantly lower risk of CRC compared with metformin non-users.

Bacteria respond to nutritional stresses by changing the cellular concentration of the alarmone (p)ppGpp. This control mechanism, called the stringent response, depends on two enzymes, the (p)ppGpp synthetase RelA and the bifunctional (p)ppGpp synthetase/hydrolase SpoT in Escherichia coli and related bacteria. Because SpoT is the only enzyme responsible for (p)ppGpp hydrolysis in these bacteria, SpoT activity needs to be tightly regulated to prevent the uncontrolled accumulation of (p)ppGpp, which is lethal. To date, however, no such regulation of SpoT (p)ppGpp hydrolase activity has been documented in E. coli In this study, we show that Rsd directly interacts with SpoT and stimulates its (p)ppGpp hydrolase activity. Dephosphorylated HPr, but not phosphorylated HPr, of the phosphoenolpyruvate-dependent sugar phosphotransferase system could antagonize the stimulatory effect of Rsd on SpoT (p)ppGpp hydrolase activity. Thus, we suggest that Rsd is a carbon source-dependent regulator of the stringent response in E. coli.

Federated learning is a learning method that collects only learned models on a server to ensure data privacy. This method does not collect data on the server but instead proceeds with data directly from distributed clients. Because federated learning clients often have limited communication bandwidth, communication between servers and clients should be optimized to improve performance. Federated learning clients often use Wi-Fi and have to communicate in unstable network environments. However, as existing federated learning aggregation algorithms transmit and receive a large amount of weights, accuracy is significantly reduced in unstable network environments. In this study, we propose the algorithm using particle swarm optimization algorithm instead of FedAvg, which updates the global model by collecting weights of learned models that were mainly used in federated learning. The algorithm is named as federated particle swarm optimization (FedPSO), and we increase its robustness in unstable network environments by transmitting score values rather than large weights. Thus, we propose a FedPSO, a global model update algorithm with improved network communication performance, by changing the form of the data that clients transmit to servers. This study showed that applying FedPSO significantly reduced the amount of data used in network communication and improved the accuracy of the global model by an average of 9.47%. Moreover, it showed an improvement in loss of accuracy by approximately 4% in experiments on an unstable network.
