BACKGROUND: To prevent tobacco use in Korea, the national quitline number was added to tobacco packages in December 2012, tobacco prices were raised by 80% in January 2015, and graphic health warning labels were placed on tobacco packages in December 2016. This study evaluated the association of these tobacco packaging and pricing policies with suicide mortality in Korea. METHODS: Monthly mortality from suicide was obtained from Cause-of-Death Statistics in Korea from December 2007 to December 2019. Interrupted time-series analysis was performed using segmented Poisson regression models. Relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated adjusted for suicide prevention strategies. RESULTS: Suicide mortality was 20 per 1,000,000 in December 2007 and showed a downward trend over the study period. After the implementation of tobacco packaging and pricing policies, suicide mortality immediately declined by - 0.09 percent points (95% CI = - 0.19 to 0.01; P > 0.05) for the national quitline number, - 0.22 percent points (95% CI = - 0.35 to - 0.09; P < 0.01) for tobacco prices, and - 0.30 percent points (95% CI = - 0.49 to - 0.11; P < 0.01) for graphic health warning labels. The corresponding RRs for these post-implementation changes compared with the pre-implementation level were 0.91 (95% CI = 0.83 to 1.00), 0.80 (95% CI = 0.70 to 0.91), and 0.74 (95% CI = 0.61 to 0.90), respectively. Significant associations between tobacco control policies and suicide mortality were observed even when stratified by sex and region. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study provide new evidence for an association between tobacco control policies and deaths by suicide. An array of effective tobacco control policies should be considered for prevention programs targeting suicide.

The performance of the ASTA MicroIDSys system (ASTA), a new matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) system, was evaluated for the identification of viridans group streptococci (VGS) and compared with the results obtained with the Bruker Biotyper system (Bruker Daltonics). A total of 106 Streptococcus reference strains belonging to 24 species from the bacterial strain bank was analyzed using the two MALDI-TOF MS systems. Of the 106 reference strains tested, ASTA MicroIDSys and Bruker Biotyper correctly identified 84.9% and 81.1% at the species level, 100% and 97.2% at the group level and 100% and 98.1% at the genus level, respectively. The difference between the two systems was not statistically significant (P = 0.289). Out of 24 species, 13 species were accurately identified to the species level with 100% accurate identification rates with both systems. The accurate identification rates at the species level of ASTA MicroIDSys and Bruker Biotyper were 100% and 87.5% for the S. anginosus group; 78.4% and 73.5% for the S. mitis group; 91.7% and 91.7% for the S. mutans group; and 100% and 100% for the S. salivarius group, respectively. The ASTA MicroIDSys showed an identification performance equivalent to that of the Bruker Biotyper for VGS. Therefore, it would be useful for the identification of VGS strains in clinical microbiology laboratories.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposure to heavy metals during critical developmental phases has been implicated in allergic phenotypes. However, few studies have been conducted on the gender-specific association of prenatal heavy metal exposure with atopic dermatitis (AD) in infants. OBJECTIVE: To examine the gender-specific association of prenatal exposure to multiple heavy metals with AD incidence in 6-month-old infants using data from the Mothers and Children's Environmental Health (MOCEH). METHODS: We evaluated 738 mother-child pairs from the MOCEH study, an ongoing prospective birth cohort. The concentrations of three heavy metals (lead, mercury and cadmium) in maternal blood samples were measured during early and late pregnancy. Each quartile of heavy metal concentration was used to consider the possible nonlinear association with AD. For assessing the multi-pollutant model, we constructed the multivariate regression model including all three heavy metals at both early and late pregnancy. Further, the group Lasso model was used to perform the variable selection with categorized exposures and assess the effect of multiple pollutants including their pairwise interactions. RESULTS: A total of 200 incident cases of AD were diagnosed in 6-month-old infants. In the multivariate regression model of the boy group, adjusted odds ratios comparing the second, third and fourth quartile of lead exposure in boys with the first quartile were 1.83 (95% CI: 1.00, 3.38), 1.04 (0.91, 3.32) and 2.40 (1.18, 4.90), respectively. However, the only second quartile of lead exposure compared to first quartile was significantly associated with AD in girls. In addition, the results of the group Lasso model were similar with the results of multivariate regression model. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that lead exposure in late pregnancy increases risk of AD in 6-month-old boys although the strength of association is weak. Further studies are needed to confirm the susceptibility window and gender differences in lead-induced AD.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence shows that prenatal environmental exposures is a risk factor for restricted intrauterine growth. However, only a few studies have examined the effects of multiple environmental exposures on fetal growth. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of prenatal exposure on multiple environmental pollutants (heavy metals, bisphenol, phthalates, and air pollutants) on birth weight. METHODS: The Mothers and Children's Environmental Health study is a prospective birth cohort comprising a total of 719 mother-child pairs, including 466 pairs undergoing early pregnancy exposure and 542 pairs of late pregnancy exposure. The concentrations of three heavy metals (mercury, lead, and cadmium) in the maternal blood samples were measured. The concentrations of three phthalate metabolites [mono(2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl) phthalate, mono(2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl) phthalate, and mono-n-butyl phthalate] and bisphenol A in maternal urine samples were measured. Daily exposure to ambient particulate matter (PM10) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) exposure was estimated based on residence and averaged by gestational age. To assess the combined effect of multiple pollutants, principal components analysis (PCA) and supervised principal components analysis (SCPA) were conducted. RESULTS: Based on PCA, the components representing PM10 and NO2 exposure during early pregnancy were significantly associated with birth weight of -32.68 g (95% CI: -64.45 g to -0.91 g) per unit increase of the corresponding component. In SCPA model, the components representing NO2 exposure during early pregnancy and the combined exposure to mercury and lead during late pregnancy were negatively associated with birth weight of -46.63 g (95% CI: -90.65 g to -2.62 g) and -55.32 g (95% CI: -99.01 g to -11.64 g), respectively, per unit increase of the corresponding component. CONCLUSION: Based on our multi-pollutant model, PM10 and NO2 exposure in early pregnancy and the combined effect of Pb and Hg in late pregnancy were associated with reduced birth weight. Our results suggest that exposure to various pollutants during pregnancy has a significant cumulative effect on birth weight, even if each pollutant is at a level below the concentration required for direct effect.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to mixture of neurotoxic metals such as lead, mercury and cadmium occurs at a specific point of time. When exposed to metal mixtures, one metal may act as an agonist or antagonist to another metal. Thus, it is important to study the effects of exposure to a combination of metals on children's development using advance statistical methods. OBJECTIVES: In this study, we explored the effects of prenatal metal exposure including lead, mercury and cadmium in early pregnancy (12-20 weeks), late pregnancy (>28 weeks), and at birth on neurodevelopment of infants at 6 months of age. METHODS: We included 523 eligible mother-child pairs from the mothers and children environmental health (MOCEH) study, a prospective birth cohort study in Korea. We used linear regression, Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) and generalized additive models (GAM), to evaluate the effects of exposure to metal mixtures on neurodevelopment of infants aged 6 months. The Korean version of Bayley scale of infant and toddler development-II was used to measure the child's neurodevelopment. RESULTS: Linear regression models showed a significant negative effect of lead exposure during late pregnancy on the mental development index (MDI) [ß = -2.51 (-4.92, -0.10)] scores of infants aged 6 months following co-exposure to mercury. Further, linear regression analysis showed a significant interaction between late pregnancy lead and mercury concentrations. BKMR analysis showed similar results as those obtained in linear regression models. These results were also replicated in the GAM. Stratification analysis showed that greater than 50 percentile concentration of mercury in late pregnancy potentiated the adverse effects of lead in late pregnancy on MDI [ß = -4.33 (-7.66, -1.00)] and psychomotor development index (PDI) [ß = -5.30 (-9.13, -1.46)] at 6 months of age. Prenatal cadmium exposure did not show a significant association with MDI and PDI at 6 months in the linear regression or BKMR analysis. CONCLUSION: Based on all the statistical methods used, we demonstrated the effect of combined exposure to metals on the neurodevelopment of infants aged 6 months, with significant interaction between lead and mercury.

In order to achieve premium quality with crop production, techniques involving the adjustment of nutrient supply and/or supplemental lighting with specific light quality have been applied. To examine the effects of low mineral supply and supplemental lighting, we performed non-targeted metabolite profiling of leaves and stems of the medicinal herb Perilla frutescens, grown under a lower (0.75×) and lowest (0.1×) supply of different minerals (N, K, or Mg) and under supplemental light-emitting diode (LED) lighting (red, blue, or red-blue combination). The lowest N supply increased flavonoids, and the lowest K or Mg slightly increased rosmarinic acid and some flavonoids in the leaves and stems. Supplemental LED lighting conditions (red, blue, or red-blue combination) significantly increased the contents of chlorophyll, most cinnamic acid derivatives, and rosmarinic acid in the leaves. LED lighting with either blue or the red-blue combination increased antioxidant activity compared with the control group without LED supplementation. The present study demonstrates that the cultivation of P. frutescens under low mineral supply and supplemental LED lighting conditions affected metabolic compositions, and we carefully suggest that an adjustment of minerals and light sources could be applied to enhance the levels of targeted metabolites in perilla.

Chemically stable ester derivatives of taxifolin have become a focus of interest for their role in the satisfactory effects on human health. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to evaluate the physical and chemical stability of different formulations containing 0.02% taxifolin tetra-octanoate, which was proved to possess higher inhibitory effect on tyrosinase activity compared with taxifolin in a cell-free system. In the studies of physical stability, a Brookfield viscometer was used to determine rheological behavior of formulations containing taxifolin tetra-octanoate, and a portable pH meter was used to determine pH change. Moreover, chemical stability was determined by HPLC with UV detection. Formulations were evaluated for 12 weeks stored at 25 and 40°C. Results showed that storage time had no significant influence on viscosity of the formulations containing taxifolin tetra-octanoate, and pH value was relatively stable, which was within the limits of normal skin pH range. In the chemical stability studies, taxifolin tetra-octanoate in the essence formulation was most unstable at 40°C with about 81% degradation in 12 weeks of storage, however, the percentage of remaining taxifolin tetra-octanoate in cream formulation stored for 12 weeks at 25°C was the highest, about 93%. The results in this study may contribute to the development of more stable formulations containing taxifolin tetra-octanoate.

RESUMO

Modern data analytics was employed to understand and predict physics-based melt-pool formation by fabricating Ni alloy single tracks using powder bed fusion. An extensive database of melt-pool geometries was created, including processing parameters and material characteristics as input features. Correlation analysis provided insight for relationships between process parameters and melt-pools, and enabled the development of meaningful machine learning models via the use of highly correlated features. We successfully demonstrated that data analytics facilitates understanding of the inherent physics and reliable prediction of melt-pool geometries. This approach can serve as a basis for the melt-pool control and process optimization.

BACKGROUND: Studies using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey-III (NHANES-III) have demonstrated significant prospective associations between blood lead levels and increased mortality. Bone lead represents cumulative lead burden and thus is a better biomarker for assessing chronic impacts, but its in vivo assessment requires special K-x-ray fluorescence (KXRF) instrumentation. Our team recently developed an algorithm predicting bone lead levels from a combination of blood lead levels, age and other socioeconomic and behavioral variables. We examined the associations of our algorithm-estimated bone lead levels and mortality in NHANES-III. METHODS: We included 11,628 adults followed up to December 31, 2019. Estimated tibia lead and patella lead levels were calculated using our prediction algorithms. We used survey-weighted Cox proportional hazards models to compute hazard ratios (HRs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: During the median follow-up of 26.8 years, 4900 participants died (mortality rate = 1398 per 100,000 adults/year). Geometric means (95 % CIs) of blood lead, predicted tibia lead, and predicted patella lead were 2.69 µg/dL (2.54, 2.84), 6.73 µg/g (6.22, 7.25), and 16.3 µg/g (15.9, 16.8), respectively. The associations for all-cause mortality were similar between blood lead and bone lead. However, the associations for cardiovascular mortality were much greater with predicted bone lead markers compared to blood lead: for comparing participants at the 90th vs. 10th percentiles of exposure, HR = 3.32 (95 % CI: 1.93-5.73) for tibia lead, 2.42 (1.56-3.76) for patella lead, 1.63 (1.25-2.14) for blood lead. The population attributable fractions for cardiovascular disease mortality if everyone's lead concentrations were declined to the 10th percentiles were 45.8 % (95 % CI: 28.1-59.4) for tibia lead, 33.1 % (18.1-45.8) for patella lead, and 22.8 % (10.4-33.8) for blood lead. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that risk assessment for cardiovascular mortality based on blood lead levels may underestimate the true mortality risk of lead exposure.

BACKGROUND: Primary renal lymphoma (PRL) is extremely rare with an incidence of 0.7% among extranodal lymphomas. Occult renal lymphoma, which mimics medical renal disease and bilateral renal involvement, presents a diagnostic challenge to nephrologists and radiologists as the clinical and radiological findings are mostly non-specific or inconclusive. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is not an uncommon finding in renal infiltration due to malignant lymphoma. However, only 14% of cases are detected before death, and the low diagnostic rate may be due to the non-specific clinical manifestations of renal involvement, with only 0.5% of these cases presenting with AKI. Moreover, PRL is difficult to diagnose based on clinical, biochemical, and radiologic features, especially, in the case of bilateral diffuse involvement. CASE SUMMARY: Herein, we report a 74-year-old woman with primary diffuse large B-cell lymphoma who presented with AKI diagnosed by ultrasound-guided needle biopsy. We also report the clinicopathologic findings of 121 PRL cases reported since 1989, by conducting a literature review of published cases. CONCLUSION: A timely renal biopsy provides the most expedient means of establishing the diagnosis. Thus, early identification of the disease by the clinician facilitates early diagnosis toward effective treatment.

This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant and antiaging effects of Indian almond (Terminalia catappa Linn.) leaf extract (TCE) on high-glucose (GLU)-induced obese Caenorhabditis elegans. Since TCE contains high contents of flavonoids and phenolics, strong radical scavenging activity was confirmed in vitro. The stress-resistance effect of TCE was confirmed under thermal and oxidative stress conditions at nontoxic tested concentrations (6.25, 12.5, and 25 µg/mL). GLU at 2% caused lipid and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation in C. elegans, and TCE inhibited lipid and ROS accumulation under both normal and 2% GLU conditions in a concentration-dependent manner. In addition, TCE proved to be effective in prolonging the lifespan of C. elegans under normal and 2% GLU conditions. The ROS reduction effect of TCE was abolished in mutants deficient in daf-16/FOXO and skn-1/Nrf-2. In addition, the lifespan-extending effect of TCE in these two mutants disappeared. The lifespan-extending effect was abolished even in atgl-1/ATGL-deficiency mutants. The TCE effect was reduced in aak-1/AMPK-deficient mutants and completely abolished under 2% GLU conditions. Therefore, the effect of prolonging lifespan by inhibiting lipid and ROS accumulation under the high GLU conditions of TCE is considered to be the result of atgl-1, daf-16, and skn-1 being downregulated by aak-1. These results suggest that the physiological potential of TCE contributes to antiaging under metabolic disorders.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic substantially disrupted healthcare utilization patterns, globally. South Korea had been praised widely in its efforts to contain the spread of the pandemic, which may have contributed to a significantly smaller reduction in healthcare utilization compared to neighboring countries. However, it remains unknown how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted utilization patterns across population sub-groups, particularly vulnerable patient groups in South Korea. This paper quantifies the changes in healthcare utilization attributable to COVID-19 and the COVID-19 vaccination by sub-groups. Methods: An interrupted time series analysis was conducted to examine the impact of COVID-19 on healthcare utilization in South Korea from January 2016 to December 2022 using aggregated patient-level data from the national health insurance system that accounts for 99% of all healthcare services in South Korea. We applied negative binomial models adjusting for seasonality and serial correlation. Falsification tests were conducted to test the validity of breakpoints. Stratified analyses by type of healthcare services, age, sex, income level, health facility type, and avoidable/non-avoidable hospitalizations was performed, and we assessed differences in utilization trends between population groups across three phases of the pandemic. Findings: In early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a reduction in monthly volume of outpatient utilization by 15.7% [95% CI 13.3%-18.1%, p < 0.001] and inpatient utilization by 11.6% [10.1%-13.0%, p < 0.001]. Most utilization recovered and rebounded to pre-COVID-19 levels as of December 2022 although variations existed. We observed heterogeneity in the magnitude of relative changes in utilization across types of services, varying from a 42.7% [36.8%-48.0%, p < 0.001] decrease for pediatrics, a 23.4% [20.1%-26.5%%, p < 0.001] reduction in utilization of public health centers, and a 24.2% [21.2%-27.0%, p < 0.001] reduction in avoidable hospitalizations compared to the pre-pandemic period. Contrary to global trends, health utilization among the elderly population (65 and older) in South Korea saw only marginal reductions compared to other age groups. Similarly, Medicaid patients and lower income groups experienced a smaller reduction compared to higher income groups. Interpretation: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare utilization in South Korea was less pronounced compared to the global average. Utilization of vulnerable populations, including adults over 65 years old and lowest-income groups reduced less than other type of patients. Funding: No funding.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are beneficial bacteria for humans and animals. However, the characteristics and functions of LAB in insects remain unclear. Here, we isolated LAB from the gut of Riptortus pedestris, a pest that is a significant problem in soybean cultivation in Korea, and identified two Lactococcus lactis and one Enterococcus faecalis using matrix-associated laser desorption/ionization-time of flight and 16S rRNA analyses. All three LAB strains survived at pH 8, and L. lactis B103 and E. faecalis B105 survived at pH 9 for 24 h. In addition, these strains survived well in simulated gastric juice of humans containing pepsin and exhibited high resistance to bile salts. Two strains of L. lactis and one of E. faecalis maintained constant density (> 104 colony-forming units [CFU]/mL) at pH 2.5, but viability at pH 2.2 was strain-dependent. The three LAB were reinoculated into second-instar nymphs of R. pedestris and colonized well, reaching a constant density (> 105 CFU/gut) in the adult insect gut. Interestingly, feeding of these LAB increased the survival rate of insects compared to the negative control, with the largest increase seen for L. lactis B103. However, the LAB did not increase the weight or length of adult insects. These results indicate that insect-derived LAB possess the traits required for survival under gastrointestinal conditions and have beneficial effects on insect hosts. The LAB infection frequency of the wild bean bug populations was 89% (n = 18) in Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea. These LAB can be utilized as a novel probiotic in the cultivation of beneficial insects. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, pregnant women have been classified as a vulnerable population. However, the evidence on the effect of infection during pregnancy on maternal and neonatal outcomes is still uncertain, and related research comprising a large population of pregnant women in Asian countries is limited. We constructed a national cohort including mothers and children (369,887 pairs) registered in the Prevention Agency-COVID-19-National Health Insurance Service (COV-N), from January 1, 2020 to March 31, 2022. We performed propensity score matchings and generalized estimation equation models to estimate the effect of COVID-19 on maternal and neonatal outcomes. In summary, we found little evidence of the effect of COVID-19 infection during pregnancy on maternal and neonatal outcomes; however, a relationship between COVID-19 infection in the second trimester and postpartum hemorrhages was discovered (Odds ratio (OR) of Delta period: 2.26, 95% Confidence intervals (CI): 1.26, 4.05). In addition, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admissions increased due to COVID-19 infection (pre-Delta period: 2.31, 95% CI: 1.31, 4.10; Delta period: 1.99, 95% CI: 1.47, 2.69; Omicron period: 2.36, 95% CI: 1.75, 3.18). Based on the national retrospective cohort study data, this study investigated the effects of COVID-19 infection on maternal and neonatal outcomes in Korea from the pre-Delta to the initial Omicron epidemic periods. Our evidence suggests that the timely and successful policies of the government and academia in response to COVID-19 infections in newborns in Korea may cause an increase in NICU admissions, but nonetheless, they prevent adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes simultaneously.

Effect of water supply to metabolites in tomato fruit was compared in two soils with different nutrient conditions, i.e., either limited or excess. Two types of soil nutrient condition, type A: nutrient-limited and type B: nutrient-excess, were prepared as follows; type A is a low nutrient-containing soil without a replenishment of starved nitrogen and phosphorous, type B is a high nutrient-containing soil exceeding the recommended fertilization. Soil water was adjusted either at -30 kPa (sufficient) or -80 kPa (limited). For harvested tomato fruits, we examined primary and secondary metabolites using non-targeted mass spectrometry based metabolomics. The fruit production and leaf SPAD were greatly dependent on soil nutrient levels, by contrast, the level of lycopene remained unchanged by different levels of water and nutrient supply. The perturbation of metabolites by water supply was clear in the nutrient-excess soil. In particular, limited water supply strongly decreased primary metabolites including sugars and amino acids. We demonstrated that water stress differently shifted primary metabolites of tomato fruits in two soils with different nutrient conditions via non-targeted mass spectrometry-based metabolomics. In conclusion, we suggest that the limited water supply in soils with surplus nutrient is not a recommendable way for tomato 'cv. Super Dotaerang' production if fruit nutritional quality such as sugars and amino acids is in the consideration, although there was no disadvantage in fruit yield.

Adjuvant use of geraniol, a plant essential oil component, is known to increase the efficacy of antibiotics by acting as a potent inhibitor of efflux mechanisms. In this study, we assessed the effect of a geraniol-antibiotic combination in 21 Acinetobacter baumannii clinical isolates consisting of high efflux (HE) and low efflux (LE) activity groups. We determined the MIC for geraniol and the four antibiotics and evaluated the adjuvant antimicrobial activity and resensitization efficacy of adjuvant geraniol. Geraniol-antibiotic combinations significantly reduced the MIC of all four antibiotics (P < 0.0001), and the fold change in MIC decreased by 4 to >256-fold for tigecycline, >16 to >4,096-fold for ceftazidime, 1 to >4,096-fold for cefepime, and >2 to >4096-fold for ciprofloxacin. Importantly, geraniol showed adjuvant antimicrobial activity and resensitization efficacy when used in combination with antibiotics in 21 A. baumannii clinical isolates. However, there was no statistically significant difference between the HE and LE groups. Low concentrations (0.125% and 0.0625%) of geraniol showed no cytotoxic or hemolytic activity. Our study shows that geraniol, acting as an antibiotic adjuvant, is a good candidate for in vivo studies of combination therapy for the treatment of MDR/XDR A. baumannii infections.

Adipokines, cytokines secreted by adipose tissue, may contribute to obesity-related metabolic disease. The role of environmental phenols and parabens in racial difference in metabolic disease burden has been suggested, but there is limited evidence. We examined the cross-sectional associations of urinary phenols and parabens with adipokines and effect modification by race. Urinary concentrations of 6 phenols (bisphenol-A, bisphenol-F, 2,4-diclorophenol, 2,5-diclorophenol, triclosan, benzophenone-3) and 4 parabens (methyl-paraben, ethyl-paraben, propyl-paraben, butyl-paraben) were measured in 2002-2003 among 1200 women (mean age = 52.6) enrolled in the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation Multi-Pollutant Study. Serum adipokines included adiponectin, high molecular weight (HMW)-adiponectin, leptin, soluble leptin receptor (sOB-R). Linear regression models were used to estimate the adjusted percentage change in adipokines per inter-quantile range (IQR) increase in standardized and log-transformed levels of individual urinary phenols and parabens. Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) was used to evaluate the joint effect of urinary phenols and parabens as mixtures. Participants included white (52.5%), black (19.3%), and Asian (28.1%) women. Urinary 2,4-dichlorophenol was associated with 6.02% (95% CI: 1.20%, 10.83%) higher HMW-adiponectin and urinary bisphenol-F was associated with 2.60% (0.48%, 4.71%) higher sOB-R. Urinary methyl-paraben was associated with lower leptin in all women but this association differed by race: 8.58% (-13.99%, -3.18%) lower leptin in white women but 11.68% (3.52%, 19.84%) higher leptin in black women (P interaction = 0.001). No significant associations were observed in Asian women. Additionally, we observed a significant positive overall effect of urinary phenols and parabens mixtures in relation to leptin levels in black, but not in white or Asian women. Urinary bisphenol-F, 2,4-dichlorophenol and methyl-paraben may be associated with favorable profiles of adipokines, but methyl-paraben, widely used in hair and personal care products, was associated with unfavorable leptin levels in black women. Future studies are needed to confirm this racial difference.

This study compared the accuracy of a new MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry system, ASTA MicroIDSys system, with that of MALDI Biotyper system for the identification of reference and clinical bacterial and yeast strains. The identification accuracy of the 2 systems was compared using a total of 406 strains comprising 142 aerobic and 180 anaerobic bacterial strains and 84 yeast strains. The genus and species identification rates were 98.0% and 89.4% using MicroIDSys and 96.1% and 89.4% using Biotyper, respectively. The species identification rates of MicroIDSys and Biotyper for aerobic bacteria were 93.0% and 97.2%, respectively, and those for anaerobic bacteria were 85.6% and 81.7%, respectively. The accuracy of yeast identification at the species level was 91.7% using MicroIDSys and 92.9% using Biotyper. These findings indicate that MicroIDSys could be useful for the accurate identification of bacteria and yeast in clinical microbiology laboratories.

Although conventional topical approaches for treating psoriasis have been offered as an alternative, there are still unmet medical needs such as low skin-penetrating efficacy and off-target adverse effects. A hyaluronic acid nanoparticle (HA-NP) formed by self-assembly of HA-hydrophobic moiety conjugates has been broadly studied as a nanocarrier for long-term and target-specific delivery of drugs, owing to their excellent physicochemical and biological characteristics. Here, we identify HA-NPs as topical therapeutics for treating psoriasis using in vivo skin penetration studies and psoriasis animal models. Transcutaneously administered HA-NPs were found to be accumulated and associated with pro-inflammatory macrophages in the inflamed dermis of a psoriasis mouse model. Importantly, HA-NP exerted potent therapeutic efficacy against psoriasis-like skin dermatitis in a size-dependent manner by suppressing innate immune responses and restoring skin barrier function without overt toxicity signs. The therapeutic efficacy of HA-NPs on psoriasis-like skin dermatitis was due to the outermost hydrophilic HA shell layer of HA-NPs, independent of the molecular weight of HA and hydrophobic moiety, and comparable with that of other conventional psoriasis therapeutics widely used in the clinical settings. Overall, HA-NPs have the potential as a topical nanomedicine for treating psoriasis effectively and safely.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Previous reports have indicated that increased expression of Jagged-1 (JAG1) may predict chemotherapy response and poor prognosis for patients with recurrent or metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC). This study aimed to investigate the clinical impact of JAG1 expression level in patients with CRC, including recurrence, especially in those diagnosed with lymph node-positive stage III CRC who underwent complete resection and appropriate adjuvant chemotherapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: All patients were enrolled through a retrospective chart review, and only those for whom the clinical course and all clinical information were adequately determined according to the inclusion criteria were selected for retrospective review through medical records. Immunohistochemical staining of JAG1 was performed using paraffin-embedded tissue. JAG1 expression was determined by scoring for staining intensity and percentage of positively stained cells; the final JAG1 score was determined as the sum of both scores. RESULTS: Sixteen patients who experienced relapse and 15 without (for over 3 years) were selected. The protein expression level of JAG1 showed a tendency for being lower in the group without recurrence, although not statistically significantly (p=0.083); however, the mean JAG1 expression score was significantly lower in the group without recurrence (1.53 vs. 3.19; p=0.004). The patients were divided into two groups with low and high JAG1 expression. The results showed that high JAG1 expression was significantly associated with recurrence of stage III CRC (p=0.029). CONCLUSION: The expression of JAG1 may be a potential novel biomarker for predicting CRC recurrence.
